face similar challenges. They may have a little more time to deal with their problems, but if they expect to stay in the game, they have to be able to make rapid adjustments. Fortunes are made and lost by those that disrespect the importance and power of time.

People have been talking about time for centuries. Proof positive is this excerpt from a book titled “The Book of Fate” by Voltaire in the 17th century: “Of all the things in the world, which is the longest and shortest, the quickest and the slowest, the most divisible and the most extensive, the most disregarded and the most regretted, without which nothing can happen, which devours everything that is little, and gives life everything that is great?”

“The answer is time. Nothing is longer, since it is the measure of eternity. Nothing is shorter, since it is lacking in all our plans. Nothing is slower for him who waits. Nothing is quicker for him who enjoys. It extends to the infinitely little. All men disregard it. All men regret the loss of it. Nothing happens without it. It makes forgotten everything unworthy of posterity, and it immortalizes the great things.”

I have a saying that I’ve often used – Killing time isn’t murder; it’s suicide.

We all start out in life with one thing in common; we all have the same amount

of time each day, each week, each month and each year. Now it’s just a matter of what we do with it.

Questions that I am repeatedly asked are: How can I get everything done with so many interruptions, distractions and shifting responsibilities? What’s the trick to prioritizing? Where’s the balance between work and personal time?

My primary advice is to first get organized. Really, really organized. I don’t mean just tidying up your desk, although that might be useful for some. I’m talking about defining your immediate needs and long-term goals and planning your time to accommodate both.

Start with a daily planner.

Electronic or paper, it doesn’t matter.

Choose a system that gives you at least one page per day, and then make sure you pay attention to the commitments.

If a distraction is going to put you off schedule more than a few minutes, either reschedule your prior commitment as soon as possible, or plug the new item into the planner.

Then get rid of your to-do list. Why? Because there is a better way to use it.

Transfer the items to a particular time and day in your daily planner. You’ll be amazed at how much your stress level goes down and how much you Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Wild Stuff Nature offers many options for nutrition. Many older individuals recall harvesting wild plants and berries as part of their walks through the woods in their younger years.

The practice was encouraged by their parents to offer some variety in the family’s diet and the conservative feelings the parents remembered from the “hard times.”

Looking back at the survival practices of the native Indians and early settlers, we find that dependence on nature’s food was the primary food source.

Several individuals reminded me that harvesting Maple sap and boiling it down for syrup was an important duty each spring. Some spoke of further refinement of the syrup to create sugar as a common practice. It took the place of purchased sugar and was free.

Wild onions (ramps, leeks or whatever they are called), are more widely used for their tops. The above ground green part was used in place of onion in cooking and as an attractive addition to salads or deviled eggs. Use of this wild food seems to be a quite popular addition to today’s recipes.

Horseradish is usually not harvested until the fall months with “r” in their names. I remember turning the crank on the grinder while grinding horseradish.

That was what could be described as

severe punishment, but somebody had to do it and it gave the opportunity to show how tough you were. Kind-of like climbing the silo to pull up the blower pipes. Boys need to show off.

Another easy springtime treat is tea made from Lilac and Basswood Blooms.

Steeping the blooms in hot water creates a flavor similar to the fragrance of the flowers. Not something one uses all the time, but it is a taste one only gets at special times during the year.

Lambs quarter, mallow, dandelion and violets were a very common addition to the table. They all could be added to or used as a salad, however they all have a taste, which is somewhat distinct and somewhat noticeable, so they were frequently added to the lettuce salad.

The four previously mentioned items were commonly boiled as a vegetable, being seasoned as you would season and serve spinach.

My Grandmother used a wild grape leaf in each jar of pickles to keep the pickles crisp. She also added grape leaves to the salt brine in the stone crock when preserving vegetables.

Recently, there is a revival of the use of sumac as a seasoning. The red berries or seeds at their top are either used whole or ground and added to salads or on roasted pork. The taste is similar to lemon.

We today primarily find our food at the grocery store. The native Indians taught the early settlers which plants were able to be used for food and medicine. They had centuries of experience, which had been passed through many generations.

If we research the ingredients of many of our current medications, we find

accomplish when you actually schedule a specific time to achieve them.

Give each item on your calendar your full attention during the assigned time. Don’t multitask when you deal with people. It seldom pays off. Whether talking on the phone or in face-to-face conversations, make the other person your top priority. Don’t page through your e-mail or texts or shuffle papers when you’re talking to someone. Make sure that your communication is clear and focused, which will reduce the need for clarification and other time-wasters in the future. Before you sign off, make sure you have a mutual understanding of next steps and make note of deadlines, which you will naturally add to your calendar.

Reserve enough time so that you don’t have to rush through things or do them over, which is a giant waste of time. Taking your time can sometimes be the best use of your time. Give your brain time to reboot and reprogram for the next challenge.

Finally, once a project is completed, let it go. Channel your precious minutes and hours into the next big (or small) item that demands your attention.

May 22, 2019: Approx. 8:30 a.m., Deputy Jamie Florek responded to a burglary report in Krain Township. The location is north of Albany in a rural area. The victim noticed several sheds on their property had been entered and two ATVs, a motorcycle and numerous tools were missing. Deputy Florek gathered a list of what was missing and gathered as much available evidence as possible.

Missing from the property: A 2019 Polaris 1000 Ranger with enclosed cab, 2015 Polaris Ranger 570, a black Victory Motorcycle, a black Tikka T3 .223 rifle, 3 cordless DeWalt grease guns, 3 cordless DeWalt drills, 3 cordless DeWalt impact drivers, 10 DeWalt 12- and 18-volt batteries, and 1 orange Generac 2000 generator.

The victim believed the burglary and theft occurred in the early morning hours on the 22nd between 1:15 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Deputy Florek was able to identify the faint tracks of the ATVs and motorcycle leaving but not much else due to the significant rain overnight. The estimated total of the stolen items was approximately $50,000.00. The ATVs and motorcycle were entered into the state and federal systems as stolen.

A couple of hours later, Investigator Tony Kotschevar was notified by the Todd County Sheriff’s Office. They had several people in their custody related to a Todd County matter.

Those individuals were found in possession of evidence that linked them to the Stearns County burglary. Investigator Kotschevar responded to Todd County and met with all the parties. As he continued the investigation, he was able to recover the 2019 Polaris 1000 Ranger with enclosed cab.

Further investigation on May 23rd led to both the Ranger 570 and Victory motorcycle being recovered. The investigation is ongoing and may lead to the recovery of other stolen items.

Since it’s an open and ongoing investigation, we have to be a little vague about the details. When the individuals are charged, we will be able to provide further information. In the meantime, anyone with information regarding the burglary or location of the stolen items is urged to contact the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office at 320-251-4240.

May 25, 2019: Stearns County deputies responded to a car versus deer crash on Saturday evening on County Road 17 near the intersection or 443rd Street in Sauk Centre Township.

Steven Twist, 60, of Long Prairie was driving a 2018 Ford Escape southbound on County Road 17 when he struck a deer. The Escape’s airbags deployed injuring his passenger, Doralee Twist, 57, of Long Prairie.

Doralee was transported to the Sauk Centre Hospital by Sauk Centre Ambulance for treatment of her non-life-threatening injuries.

Sauk Centre Police Department and Sauk Centre Fire Department assisted.

Obituaries Ruth H. “Ruthie” Braegelmann

R u t h H. “Ruthie” Braegelmann, age 88 of Melrose, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 31 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Private inurnment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. The Schanhaar-Otte V.F.W. Auxiliary will pray at 5 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Ruth Hedwig Schlicht was born August 6, 1930 in Albany, Minnesota to Hubert and Helen (Hofmann) Schlicht. She was united in marriage to Celestine “Mike” Braegelmann on June 10, 1947 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. She enjoyed her Monday morning coffee party group for over 60 years and played in her Bridge group for 50 plus years. She volunteered her time at St. Mary’s School and worked at Kuhlmann Drug in Melrose. Ruthie was a great cook. She made the best dressing, homemade bread, chocolate chip cookies, and fried bread dough, famously known as Strohsack, that

all the neighborhood kids would show up to share.

Ruthie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose where she sang in the choir and taught CCD “religious education” for many years. She was also a member of Schanhaar-Otte V.F.W. Post 7050 Auxiliary and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her children, JoAnn (Gary) Jasicki of Weyerhaeuser, Wisconsin, Michael (Zona) Braegelmann of Tucson, Arizona, Patrick (Sandy) Braegelmann of Big Birch Lake, Russell (Linda) Braegelmann of Melrose, Roger (Roberta) Braegelmann of Tucson, Arizona, Jeffry (Becky) Braegelmann of New Ulm, and Jerry Braegelmann of Woodstock, Connecticut; nine grandchildren, Chantel (Jason Haukos) Braegelmann, Ryan (Lori) Braegelmann, Nicole (Chad Yoeckel) Braegelmann, Ashley (Cory) Groves, Erik (Hannah) Braegelmann, Rachel (Joe) Dunlavy, Jon (Kylie) Braegelmann, Peter Braegelmann, and Killian Braegelmann; eight great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Cyril Braegelmann of Melrose and Nick Braegelmann of Melrose; and sister-in-law, Gysella Moore of Eagle Lake.

James Pekula, 83 year old resident of Little Falls, MN, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Little Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial took place on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN with Father Ben Kociemba officiating. Burial took place in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls, MN. Arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls.

James Pekula was born on November 1, 1935 in Swan River Township to parents John and Florence (Gosiak) Pekula. As a young man at the age of 16, James had his own milk route hauling milk from local farmers in Swan River to the Sobieski Coop Creamery. At the age of 18, James and his younger sister, Joan ran their brother Leonard’s farm while he served our country from 1953 to 1955. James also worked for the Meat Packing plants in South St. Paul for a few years, while returning home on weekends and days off to help his parents and brother on the farms located in Swan River Township.

He was united in marriage to Rita Bursey on September 7, 1959 at St. StanislausKostka Catholic Church in Bowlus, MN. The couple made their home in Little Falls.

Just three short months after James and Rita were married, James joined the Minnesota Army National Guard on December 1, 1959 and served our country for over 39 years honorably, until his retirement in 1993.

James was hired full-time at Camp Ripley as a Federal Technician Mechanic shortly after joining the National Guard. He attained the rank of Sergeant First Class and was very proud of his 39 years working and training for the Minnesota Army National Guard.

Even with his career in the Military, James never could be away from farming. In 1976, James and Rita were able to fill their life long dream and purchased their own farm just outside of Little Falls. There they raised a

daughter and three sons on the farm milking cows, raising beef and a few hogs. James loved doing field work with his Farmall and International Harvester equipment. James never retired from farming, even after moving into Diamond Willow this last December.

James loved his wife, Rita dearly, spending time with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids, enjoyed his moose hunt up north and deer hunting trips with the boys and grandkids. At deer camp, he always made sure he packed his leg medicine and Grainbelt beer. He loved watching Bonanza, Hogan’s Heroes, the ten O’clock news and Johnny Carson. He had to have his sweets after each meal and his donuts from Casey’s.

James served on the following boards and organizations: Union Representative for Association of Civilian Technicians, Chapter 21, founding member and longtime president of the Polish Knight Riders Snowmobile Club. He was a member of the Little Falls American Legion Post #46, was a Knight in the fourth degree for the Knights of Columbus Council #1804 and a loyal member and longtime usher of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Little Falls, MN. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Rita Pekula of Little Falls; children, Renee (Tim) Tabatt of Little Falls, Jeff (Monique) Pekula of Little Falls, Gary (Jennifer) Pekula of Eau Claire, WI, Randy (Lori) Pekula of Holdingford; grandchildren, Nichole (Joe) Gold, Kayla (Chris) Barnard, Katie Pekula, Corey Pekula, Alyssa Pekula, Justin Pekula, Megan Pekula, Carter Pekula and George Pekula; great-grandchildren, Sierra, Reed and Lillian; siblings, Joan Jendro of Little Falls and Mary Bellefeuille of Sobieski and many nieces, nephews and friends.

James was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Geraldine Pekula; brother-in-law, Duane Jendro and parents, John and Florence Pekula.

Beatrice Wanitta Jobe F u n e r a l Services will be at 2 PM on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at the Williams D i n g m a n n Stein Chapel in Long Prairie for Beatrice Wanitta (Shouts) Jobe, age 97 of Long Prairie who passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Bethesda Grand Nursing Home in Willmar, MN. Pastor Paul McCullough will officiate and burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Long Prairie. Family and friends may call one hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Beatrice was born at home in Shelby Township in Blue Earth County to Bert and Edythe (Ables) Shouts. She was baptized July 6, 1932 in Garden City, MN. Beatrice grew up on a farm by Amboy and worked in a grocery store while growing up. She graduated in 1941 from Amboy School, where she met Marvin Jobe from Blue Earth

Lois R. Suek

Lois R. Suek, 96 year old resident of Minneapolis, MN, formerly of Holdingford, MN, passed away on Sunday, May, 26, 2019 at St. Anthony Healthcare in Minneapolis.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN, with Rev. Hollis Bishop officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 AM Saturday at the church. Interment will be in Gethsemane Cemetery in Upsala.

Lois Regina Suek passed away quietly on May 26, 2019 at the age of 96. Lois was born on May 6, 1923 in Albin Township near Godahl, MN, the youngest child of Ole Olson and Gina (Johnson) Olson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Albion Lutheran Church in rural Godahl.

The Olson children grew up in a closeknit extended family. Lois was especially close to her double first cousins, children of Uncle Lars and Aunt Dorthea (her mother’s older brother and her father’s younger sister.)

She also enjoyed time with her Johnson relatives, Aunt Emma, and Aunt Nina, and her two Norwegian bachelor uncles, Joe and Chris. Her Lilleodden cousins, especially cousin Christine, were also important influences in her childhood and young adult years. Lois attended grade school in a one-room country school northwest of Godahl. She attended St. James High School, graduating as salutatorian of the Class of 1941. She continued her education at St. Olaf College, graduating in 1947 and majoring in Home Economics. Her mother, Gina, had received a scholarship to attend St. Olaf in 1906 but was unable to attend. She

In 1990, she moved to Raymond, MN where she lived until 2006 and moved to Bethesda Grand in Willmar where she resided until she passed. Beatrice loved to bake homemade bread usually every day, needle point/plastic mesh, paint by number pictures and sewing. She also enjoyed going to garage sales, crossword puzzles, her coffee and spending time with her family especially babysitting her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Martin (Kathy) of Long Prairie, daughter Marlene (Bob) Gustafson of Raymond; daughter-inlaw, Judy Jobe of Dodge Center; sister-inlaw, Bonnie Shout of Amboy; brother-inlaw, Ervin (Shirley) Jobe, Leavenworth, KS; 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin (1975); parents, Bert and Edythe Shouts; sisters, Florence, Mildred, Dorothy; infant (4 months) brother Marvin; brothers, Clifford, Melvin, Stanley “Bud”; grandson Tate and sons Elmer and Bill. was determined, however, that her children receive education beyond high school. Lois and her brother Norman achieved that.

Lois completed a dietetic internship at the University of Minnesota, and became a registered dietitian. Lois worked as a staff dietitian at Swedish Hospital in downtown Minneapolis for three years. She was a young career woman when she met Alphonse Suek in 1953. They were married May 1, 1954 in St. Louis Park, MN and she moved to the Suek farm at Holdingford. Lois served on the Holdingford School Board for 21 years, and was active in school board activities at both the local and regional levels. She received an Outstanding School Board Member Award from the Minnesota School Board Association.

Lois and Al were longtime members of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in nearby Upsala, MN. Lois was active in the women’s organization and was a Sunday School teacher when her children were young.

While raising her family, Lois continued her work as a part-time dietitian, teaching for several years in the nutrition program at Alexandria Technical School, working at the Melrose hospital and at the Albany hospital from the time it opened in 1969 until she retired in 1995.

Lois is survived by her six children, Mary Carter (Ed), Linda, Mark (Deb), Paul (Sue), Philip (Paula), and Martha Nelson (Carl-Martin). She was a proud grandmother to 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Lois is also survived by sisters-in-law, Vonnie Norum, and Rita Suek Mettenburg, and many nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband Alphonse, her parents Ole and Gina, sister Helen, brother Norman, nephews Lance and John, and nieces Carolyn and Eileen.

William “Bill” L. Pohlmann William L. Pohlmann, 53 year old resident of Upsala, MN passed away Sunday, May 26, 2019 at his home.

Wi l l i a m L a w r e n c e Pohlmann was born on July 8, 1965 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Caroline (Wiechmann) Pohlmann. Bill graduated from Melrose High School in 1983. Bill continued to work on the family farm. He married Mary Hartung on September 8, 1990 and they were blessed with three children. In 1994, Bill and his family moved to Upsala, when Bill took a job at Woodcraft Industries in St. Cloud, where he worked until his death. He never lost his love of farming, as he continued to help out when he could on the family farm and then later started working for Kasella Dairy in Royalton on the weekends.

Bill was a very proud father. He attended all of his kids’ sporting events and wouldn’t miss any of their school or church functions.

His cheers were always heard. Bill was

Holdingford Students Receive Awards

Students from Holdingford Secondary participating in The Stock Market Game™ (SMG) were recently recognized for taking 3rd place in the High School Division of the Minnesota SMG competition.

This team was taught by Mark Alcorn. The 3rd place team of students included Bailey Boulton, Alexander Provo, Faith Wannarka and Samantha Young.

The SMG is an interactive learning program for students in grades 4-12 and is managed in Minnesota by BestPrep, a local non-profit. Students work in teams to invest a virtual $100,000 over a 14week period, competing with other Minnesota students for the highest-valued portfolio.

Support from Schwab Advisor Services and funding from Charles Schwab Foundation, SMG team fees were waived for this Holdingford Secondary team. Without this funding, many schools would be unable to participate in SMG. “The Stock Market Game is unique because students are actually engaging in the stock market in real time. Students see the consequences of the financial choices they make, which allows them to understand the various factors that impact the market, encouraging ongoing research and long-term planning,” said Stephanie Musgrove, Program Manager at BestPrep.

Each SMG team has access to online daily portfolio updates on their current holdings, brokerage fees, and team rankings. Students evaluate their portfolio on a regular basis, and throughout the session, they determine when to make new investments, hold onto existing investments, or sell their shares. Students also develop important real-world skills, like money management, economics, and critical thinking.

One teacher commented, “The Stock Market Game has been a cornerstone of our instruction on a yearly basis. The program continues to play a vital role in the education of our students…[and] allows students to collaborate, think critically, be creative, and communicate with one another.”

This session of SMG concluded with an awards ceremony on May 23 in Minneapolis, where these Holdingford Secondary students and other top-ranking teams from each age division were recognized.

The SMG is run nationally by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Foundation and in Minnesota by BestPrep.

Dear Motor Medics, We have a new driver in the family, our teenage daughter. She will start driving on her own in a few weeks and we have spent many hours with her teaching the skills of driving. We feel that she is very responsible for her age and will be a responsible driver but we would like your advice on how we can teach her to deal with a few common emergencies that a teenager might face when starting out on the road alone for the first time.

-Shelby in Carroll, Iowa Dear Shelby, There are many things about common vehicle emergencies that a new driver and even a well-seasoned one can benefit from knowing. Some problems can be prevented with focused driving. A driver who is aware of their surroundings can avoid many common problems.

First off, many teens I speak to don’t know what to do about a flat tire. This is one of the easiest things to take care of but without proper knowledge can be very intimidating and even dangerous.

Go over the procedures for installing a spare and don’t forget safety first like making sure the car is in a safe location before attempting a change. Six inches from the edge of a busy highway is not safe. In general, think of all the issues you have dealt with in your daily driving and teach them before it happens. Dead battery, out of gas, locked out of car, etc.

-Jesse in Martinsville, Virginia Dear Jesse, You just must have one of those magnetic attractions, one that attracts officers. You could take a cab, or you could avoid some common mistakes.

If you are getting pulled over often you must be doing something to attract attention to yourself. Here are just a few things that will draw attention. Being the only car on the road, this puts all eyes on you. Passing too quickly, by darting out, around, and back in quickly, it looks like you are traveling faster than you may be.

If you are traveling too fast, slow down.

Loud music and dark tinted windows, and loud exhaust never helps either. In general, you want to be as incognito as possible. Don’t draw unneeded attention to yourself. If you do get pulled over the number one way to avoid that ticket is to be polite. The officers are doing their jobs and will be making the choice of ticket or not. Being rude is a surefire way of making sure they do their job as thoroughly as possible.

Melrose City April 11, 2019 The Melrose City Council met in a Regular Meeting on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Melrose City Center pursuant to due notice being given thereof.

Present were Council Members Tony Klasen, Justin Frieler, Mark Hill, Travis Frieler, and Mayor Joe Finken, Acting City Administrator/ Finance Director Tessa Beuning, and City Clerk Patti Haase. Mayor Finken presided thereat.

Also in attendance were American Government students from the Melrose Area Public High School.

The Council then recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

A motion was made by Mr. Hill, seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried to approve the agenda as amended.

Mayor Finken then opened the floor to public comment. There were no comments.

The following items were considered for approval under the Consent Agenda: a. The minutes from the March 21 Regular Meeting b. List of bills in the amount of $144,233.74 c. List of investments for the month of March d. Donation Resolutions: 1) Resolution No. 2019-23, Donation in the amount of $500 from Roving Hillbillies Snowmobile Club, St. Rosa/Freeport to the Melrose Fire Department 2) Resolution No. 2019-24, Donation in the amount of $800 from Stearns Electric Association Trust to the Melrose Fire Department for equipment purchase 3) Resolution No. 2019-25, Donation in the amount of $1,000 from the Melrose American Legion Post 101 towards the Riverfest Celebration e. Ambulance Department uncollectible accounts. There was a total of $3,301.28 collected from account holders during this quarter. f. Fire Department uncollectible accounts in the amount of $200 has been submitted to Revenue Recapture, collections, or written off. A complete list of accounts is on file at the City Office. There

was also a total of $200 collected from account holders during this quarter. g. On May 6, Police Officer Matt McDonald will complete four years of service. Police Chief Craig Maus conducted a review and it is favorable; therefore, recommends approval of a step increase from Step 4 to Step 5. h. Ambulance Coordinator Jenn Tschida is requesting Mia Meyer be appointed to the Department contingent upon her passing her test which will be early May. The Council to take action approving Ms. Meyer to the Ambulance Department contingent upon passing her written test and a pre-employment physical. A motion was made by Mr. Hill, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried to approve the Consent Agenda items.

Police Chief Maus presented the Police Department’s March 2019 report. He noted there were 426 calls for service during that month, compared to 406 for March 2018. There were 112 verbal warning and 20 written warning. A total of 60 citations were written for the month of March. The year-to-date number of calls is 1151 compared to 1086 in 2018. For the month of March, the Department received 26 agency assist calls.

City Attorney Scott Dymoke reported on projects he has been working on for the City: • Rahn Properties: Worked with City staff to prepare proposed letter of agreement and resolutions for proposed development.

• Auditor’s Opinion Letter: Reviewed applicable City records & files and prepared opinion letter to the City Auditor.

• Charter Franchise Agreement: Discussed additional changes to franchise agreement with Charter representatives.

• Both properties that had been issued Nuisance Orders had come into compliance prior to going to court.

Community Development Director Atkinson reported the various projects staff has been working on, many related to prior and upcoming meetings. Staff is working on four rezonings: St. Mary’s Church, St. Paul’s Lutheran

Geraldine ‘Geri” Irwin

Geraldine ‘Geri’ Irwin, attaining the age of 101 years, went to meet her Lord on the morning of May 24, 2019 from the Galeon in Osakis, MN. Geri was born in Fergus Falls, MN on Independence Day, July 4 in the year 1917. She was one of two daughters born to James and Ellen (Sprague) Dowell. She attended school and then studied to be a beautician in Minneapolis.

She worked for several years in Harmony, MN. Geri then married the love of her life, Howard Irwin on March 7, 1938 in Backus, MN. They moved to the Osakis area and farmed and raised their children. After Howard’s death in 1979, Geri continued to farm for another twelve years before moving into Long Prairie, MN, living at the Eldred’s Country Club Apartments for 14 years until moving to the Prairie View Apartments in 1993. Health concerns required a move to the Galeon in Osakis, MN her last years.

Geri was a natural at making friends.

She loved to visit with her clients and had a gift for making people feel they were special.

Church, Mayers’ lot west of Melrose Truck Repair and Dufner Mini Storage. The draft of the Outdoor Seating Ordinance will be presented at the May Council meeting. Ms. Atkinson provided an update on the 1st Quarter Building Permits.

On April 9, the Council held a Special Joint Meeting with MADA to review the development proposal for the Kraft lot. Both MADA and the Council approved the financial assumption dated “3.16.19”. The Council approved for Traci Ryan with Ryan Consulting to draft a Letter of Intent to demonstrate commitment of both parties. A motion was made by Mr. Travis Frieler, seconded by Mr. Hill and unanimously carried to approve the Letter of Intent as presented.

The Council discussed the HVAC system and a potential change order to the project. Staff met with SEH and Mission Mechanical and they are recommending the addition of the humidification units. The change order is in the amount of $23,184. The Public Utilities Commission, at its April 8 meeting, approved the change order with the $1,925 deduction for electing to go with the Carnes humidifiers. A motion was made by Mr. Klasen, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried concurring with the Public Utilities Commission.

At a Special Joint Meeting held on April 9, the Council and MADA discussed potentially purchasing tax-forfeited property.

Community Development Director Atkinson stated that she was unable to finalize all the details to present to the Council. A motion was made

by Mr. Klasen, seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler and unanimously carried to table the discussion until the April 23 Special Meeting.

The following informational items were reviewed: a. Utilities Commission’s March 11, 2019 Regular Meeting minutes. b. Stearns County Attorney Janelle Kendall has provided the Annual Misdemeanor Prosecution Report and Stearns County Diversion Program Report.

A motion was made by Mr. Klasen, seconded by Mr. Justin Frieler and unanimously carried that the meeting be adjourned at 6:20 p.m.

She had a coffee shop at the farm and in the Apartments where people could come to visit and laugh their cares away. She was an excellent cook and always had some baked goods to share with friends and family who stopped for a visit. She played cards, went dancing, traveling and worked in her garden.

She was a devoted Twins and Vikings fan and also liked to read and crochet. While raising her kids she was also active in the local 4-H group. Geri belonged to the Leslie Community Church and belonged to the Ladies Aid. She is survived by her son, Jim (Lorie) Irwin of Sauk Centre, MN and a daughter, Judy Lunceford of Long Prairie; 15 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard, a son, John Irwin and a daughter and son-in-law, Jean & Dennis Weiss, a great grandson, Brandon Weiss, sister, Marjorie Dowell, son-in-law, Wayne Lunceford.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church in Osakis with Rev. Kali Christensen and Rev. James Brown as celebrants. Musicians were organist, and soloist, Dana Hetland.

Interment was at the Gordon Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Osakis with casketbearers Michael, Steven, Cody and Brandie Irwin, Krystal Weiss and Bill Lunceford.

Werner S. Gruber

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill for Werner S. Gruber, age 83, of Spring Hill.

Werner passed away suddenly on May 27, 2019 at his home. Reverend Marvin Enneking will officiate. Burial will take place in the St. Michael’s Parish Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 9 a.m. on Thursday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill.

Werner was born July 5, 1935 in Paynesville, to Frank and Freda (Nietfeld) Gruber. He married Marilyn Schlangen on April 7, 1958 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond. Together they farmed in Spring Hill. Werner was an

active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where he was trustee for 17 years, St. Michael’s Men’s Society and Catholic United Financial. During his retirement years, he was well known for greeting and helping families with the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home.

Werner will be remembered for his love of the land and conservation farming.

As an avid competitive plowman, he was able to travel the world.

Werner is survived by his wife Marilyn, children Lila (Joe) Klein of Richmond, Henry (Karen) Gruber of St. Cloud, Glenna (Steve) Soenneker of Clear Lake, Gary (Lori) Gruber of Alexandria, Marina (Keith) Ostendorf of Savage, Gene (Eva) Gruber of Richmond, Bob (Shelly) Gruber of Becker and Conrad (Sandra) Gruber of Spring Hill, 25 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and sisters Agnes Kleve of Farmington and Lorraine Evans of Alaska.

Preceding Werner in death were his parents, infant son John, sister Mary Ann Roering, infant sister Rose and brothers-inlaw Gerald Kleve and Alfred Roering.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I recently started following your plan, and I’ve looked into refinancing the home I bought five years ago to free up more money to put toward paying off debt. My interest rate is 3.625 percent, along with a private mortgage insurance payment of $200 per month. This makes my mortgage payment $2,700 a month, and I owe $325,000 on the house. I was offered a re-financing plan that included a monthly payment of $2,576 with no PMI, but the interest rate would be 4.6 percent.

What do you think?

-Phil Dear Phil, You don’t need to refinance with those numbers. You’d be going up more in terms of interest rate than you’d save with no PMI. The only reason the payment is going down is that you’d be agreeing to stay in debt longer.

Now, if you could’ve lost some of that interest rate, and gotten rid of the PMI, that might have come close to making sense.

But, even that might not have worked in the end, because you’d have closing costs associated with the deal.

There’s no way this deal is a good idea. You’d essentially be going up a full percentage point in terms of interest, and all you’d really be doing is resetting, or re-casting, the loan. Basically, you’d be starting over on the loan. That’s why the larger payment and PMI would go away, but you’d have a significant increase in your interest rate.

Where you’re at right now is fine, Phil.

You’re off to a good start, so just keep on moving forward with getting out of debt and gaining control of your finances!

free, and we have a full emergency fund in place. We bring home around $110,000 a year combined, and we are both maxing out 401(k)s at work. We each just opened additional IRAs, as well. At this point, we want to start setting aside $30,000 a year for a few years as savings to help buy a home. With all this in mind, what do you think about the idea of vintage watches as an investment? I work with a high-end retail company, and I’ve noticed certain sports watches have been doubling or even tripling in value over time. Would it be okay to spend around $5,000 on a vintage watch now, or should I wait until we’re in even better financial shape?

-Mike Dear Mike, Yeah, you could do that. Just make sure you look at it the right way. It would be a hobby, not a real investment.

I have a friend who has collected a few thousand bottles of wine over the years. The value of most of them has gone up since he bought them, but it’s not part of his investment strategy. So, if you buy a $5,000 watch in your situation, that’s okay. Just don’t go nuts and buy 10 of them, you know?

New state budget unresolved as Legislature adjourns

In what appears to be a pattern, the Legislature ran out of time last Monday evening without putting together a new, two-year state budget.

Only one finance bill made the midnight deadline before adjournment, that being the higher education bill. One other, the bill pertaining to agriculture and housing, was introduced in the last half hour of session but wasn’t acted upon.

There just wasn’t enough time to properly go over the 109-page bill, and it was laid on the table as the clock struck midnight and the session ended.

After an informational hearing to learn about the bill two days later, on Wednesday, it appears that the bill is sol-

id. It contains a provision that I strongly support, namely $5 million for dairy farmers to help defray the cost of enrollment in the federal margin protection plan. There is a cap on the size herd that would be eligible for this assistance, and it’s roughly 750 cows. There may be additional funding for dairy in the jobs bill, which is still under consideration.

The last few days of the regular session were a bit different than those of previous years. Instead of a mad rush to work on and finish bills right up until the midnight deadline, action was more subdued.

That’s because the two leaders from the House and Senate, along with Gov. Walz, didn’t come up with overall spending targets until Sunday night, the day before adjournment. And, even though there was agreement on the overall size of the next budget, details of exactly how that funding would be disbursed among the various departments of state government had not been fully agreed to.

That’s where the hang-up occurred

as conference committees were given only until 5 p.m. the next day to allocate their funding and finish up work on their respective bills. That proved to be an unworkable timeline.

One needs to go back to 1985 to find a session where fewer budget bills were passed and sent to the governor before session adjournment. There were high aspirations at the start of this year’s session that the process was different and things wouldn’t get rushed at the end.

Earlier goals were set for moving bills along, but the key goal of coming up with joint spending targets proved difficult to achieve. Not having those targets slowed the entire process in the final week of session and made the goal of finishing on time unattainable.

Virginia “Ginny” Willis was born on January 24, 1930 in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Virginia worked 25 years at Kobackers in Portsmouth, Ohio, as the manager of the infant/children department. While working there, she took training to be a hairdresser.

She owned and operated Ginny’s Beauty Shop for 15 years, before retiring to Florida.

She enjoyed her grandchildren and stepgrandchildren. She loved traveling and seeing new things. She had a strong Southern Baptist Faith. As a teenager, she would take her younger siblings to church on Sundays.

dropped, and in human services, where the sunset to the provider tax was eliminated. The rate of the so-called “sick tax” was reduced from 2 percent to 1.8 percent, however it will remain in place.

As of this writing, we haven’t been informed of when a special session will be called to finish work on budget bills, which would go into effect with the new fiscal year on July 1. We were instructed to keep the two days before the Memorial Day weekend open, but at this time it appears more likely the following week is when the Legislature will be called back to the Capitol. Only the governor can call a special session, and various procedures pertaining to the session are usually agreed upon before that announcement is made.

there were 10 of them. She loved Gospel music and knew many songs by heart. She loved to share her testimony of God and of the wonderful things he did. Ginny quit school her Sophomore year to work and help her parents to support her siblings. She would help her family and any friends in any way she could. She would volunteer at the old Wheelersburg Children’s Home, helping mend the broken hearts of many children that were left there by their parents. She taught her siblings how to clean the house and cook. Living in a small house that was crowded, everything had to be in its place.

She never met a stranger. She would talk to anyone she met. She had a wonderful heart.

She will be missed by many.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Just as God Loved Us; John 13:31-35 Jesus tells us to love one another just as he has loved us. This is an interesting command. In our modern day we can get hooked on this feeling we call love. But love is far more than just a feeling we have for people. Love is not just an emotional state, it is a way of life.

The reality is that we were created to be in loving relationship with God our creator and others. The most intimate relationship we have apart from our creator is the love shared between husband and wife. Too bad our society has corrupted that so badly. Following marriage is family, children, parents, and brothers and sisters. Marriage, family and children all go together because they are an intimate reflection of the relationship of God as found in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Trinitarian nature of God means he is at his core relational and being created in his image so are we.

When Jesus is getting ready to leave and send the Holy Spirit his last command is to love one another. In other words, to live in restored relationship with one another. Sin has a way of destroying relationships. In the fall Adam and Eve’s relationship with God was broken. He chose to send his only Son to die so our relationship with him could be restored through faith. As God has loved us so we love those around us starting with our spouse, children, and family including those brothers and sisters we have in Christ - and then moving out to the world around us.

The world is chasing after all kinds of emotions. The world wants the feeling of power and wealth, desires and

lusts. People want to feel good so they love themselves first and other relationships matter only because of how they make us as sinners feel. There is a big difference between an “I love you” because you make me happy and an “I love you” because you are important to me and God. There are so many people whose relationship with God is broken and self centered. So many people who are hurting and alone because sin has destroyed every good and decent relationship in their life. Greed, drugs, alcohol, selfishness you name it, it has taken its toll on people and the relationships in their lives that matter. Jesus told us to love one another just as he loved us. This is not some command we need to follow that earns us eternal life this is the way, the truth and the life that leads to new life.

When we realize exactly how God has loved us our reality changes.

Through faith we are transformed from sinner to saint. We go from an empty clay vessel formed by God to a vessel filled with purpose. We go from worrying about ourselves to loving one another as Christ loved us.

New life begins by learning from God what a real relationship with love is like. Just as Christ loved us and gave his life for ours we love others that same way. This is what we were created to do.

What greater joy can we have then living as we were created to be. Amen.
