Stop and smell the roses -By Harvey Mackay A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, enjoying his new Jaguar.

He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag’s side door! He slammed on the brakes and backed up to the spot where the brick had been thrown.

The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and shouted, “What was that all about?

me a lot of money. Why did you do it?”

The young boy was apologetic.

“Please, mister ... Please. I’m sorry but I didn’t know what else to do,” he pleaded. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop...” With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car.

“It’s my brother,” he said. “He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair.” Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He’s hurt, and he’s too heavy for me.”

Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the lump in his throat.

He gently lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay.

“Thank you,” the grateful child told the stranger.

Too shook up for words, the man simply watched the boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home. It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar.

The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: Don’t go through life so fast that

someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention!

My sister Margie is constantly telling me to stop and smell the roses.

In other words, slow down. I just love to go fast and cram as many things into my life as possible. It’s not that I don’t enjoy things – I do. I just get bored if I’m not busy doing something I like to do all the time.

When I am asked what I would like on my tombstone when I die, I answer, “He couldn’t sleep fast enough.” In other words, I’m afraid if I sleep too much, I’ll miss something.

I’m well aware that if I were growing up in this day and age, I would be labeled as hyperactive. I’ve always needed to be busy. That’s not a bad thing, if you know how to use your time constructively and can learn to focus.

I work almost every day, but I take time off for my hobbies, which include international travel, spectator sports and lots of golf. My wife, Carol Ann, and I are movie junkies. We also have family that visits us on a regular basis, and with 11 grandchildren, this keeps me grounded. And that involves making some tough choices.

You try to strike a healthy balance between your work life and your personal time. But when a new project lands on your desk, or the busy season hits, you Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Modernization Ever think about how agriculture has changed in the last 100 years? 100 years ago, the number of cultivated acres per farm were much less.

A farm may have 10 cows, 6 sow pigs, 150 chickens, 12 head of young stock, 20 smaller pigs, a bull, a boar pig and 2 horses. A rather different inventory than farms of today.

Hundred years ago, a section of cultivated land probably supported 5 family farms. Since families were larger in the past, that number of farms was home for about 30 people. These farms were designed to create enough food to support the farm animals. If it was a good year, there may be some oats or corn available to sell. If it was a bad year, there usually wasn’t enough extra money to buy feed, so the number of farm animals was reduced. The ultimate goal was to keep the family fed and keep possession of the farm.

Milking in the early years was done by hand as it had been done for centuries. The improvement was having a separator, which reduced the milk volume by about 95% and created cream, which was more valuable and easier to keep cool than whole milk. The cream and eggs were taken to town to sell about once per week.

The eggs were usually picked and the chickens fed by mother or one of the kids. As a result, the money from the eggs was frequently mother’s money to be used to buy groceries and if any was left, it was used to buy cloth to be used for sewing her families clothing. It was common for mother to take the team and wagon to town with the cream and milk, which allowed those left on the farm to continue their projects on the farm.

Today we usually see Holsteins on

a dairy farm, but looking back we see many brown cows on the farm. They were Shorthorns and Guernseys and were felt to have higher cream content in their milk. They gave less milk and as a result, there was less milk to run through the separator.

Along came the tractors. At first, since farms were smaller and the farmer, being conservative after the previous bad years, usually purchased a small tractor.

The first tractors were able to use the horse-drawn farm implements still on the farm, which reduced the expense of buying new tractor machinery. It seemed that it was not expensive to add a hitch in place of the horse hook-up. The use of tractors and horse machinery did not actually allow the farmer to greatly increase production, but the tractor was usually easier to control. The farmer could then brag that he had a tractor over at his place.

The horse machinery frequently was not adapted to be used with a tractor.

First the seats were removed from the implement, but in many cases the levers to control the machine were located near the old seat area, which wasn’t readily reachable from the tractor. Farmers soon changed to tractor machinery, which was made to be controlled from the tractor. Hydraulic controls and powertake-off wasn’t common, so the farmer still needed big muscles to raise and lower plows and cultivators. I remember a cultivator on a JD H. It had a long lever on the right side, which raised and lowered the cultivator. To raise the cultivator at the end of the field, I as a young operator needed to stop the tractor, put both hands on the lever, put one foot on the “dash-board” and PULL. When you came to the place to lower the cultivator, you jerked the lever and stayed out of the way, since it went down fast. As you became more advanced in the use of the machine, you learned to drop the cultivator without stopping the tractor. This method was more efficient, but sometimes you cultivated out some corn using this method. Oh well, maybe the rows were too long before you fixed

them.

Roadside Ditch Spraying to Begin

Our goals are to eliminate the brush and noxious weeds and to promote grass cover along the roadside. Obituaries Beverly A. Heideman Beverly A. Heideman, age 88 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Tree of Life Assisted Living in New Munich, Minnesota.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Mike Carlson officiating. Inurnment will be at Kandota Township Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Beverly Ann Yager was born April 1, 1931 in Albany, Minnesota to George and Alice (Siemering) Yager. She graduated from Sauk Centre High School and continued her education at Macalester College graduating with a teaching degree. She married Eugene Heideman on October 10, 1964 at United Church of Christ in Sauk Centre. Beverly taught kindergarten for a span of 14 years in Virginia, Minnesota, Great Falls, Montana, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She lived in

Marty O’Hara

F u n e r a l s e r v i c e s celebrating the life of Marty O’Hara, age 63 of Holdingford, was held Monday, April 29 at the Miller Carlin Funeral Home Chapel in Holdingford.

Burial was in the St. Mary’s parish cemetery. Marty died suddenly at his home on Wednesday.

Marty was born March 8, 1956 in Hallock, MN to Thomas and Dariel (Aleshire) O’Hara. He married Kathy May on September 30, 1983 in St. Cloud. The couple lived in Holdingford and Marty worked as a Project Engineer, manufacturing

Peter P. Kurtz Brookfield, Wisconsin for 30 years before moving to Minnesota. After the birth of her two sons, she resigned from teaching and was a stay at home mother. Bev volunteered much of her time at Elmbrook School District Libraries. After her husband retired, the couple relocated to Fairly Lake.

Beverly was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre, Christ the King in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and Our Father in Rockford, Minnesota. She enjoyed cooking gourmet meals, reading, Bible studies, and Classical Music; her favorite artist being Van Cliburn. She also enjoyed making homemade seasonal and birthday cards for friends and family. Her artwork and scrapbooking consisted of different patterns of paper and envelopes, unique ribbons, and an assortment of doilies.

Survivors include sons, George Heideman of Sauk Centre, Kurt (Rhonda) Heideman of Rogers; granddaughters, Emily Adams, Haley Anderson, and Grace Heideman; great-grandchild, Karsyn Adams; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene Heideman on November 18, 2011; and daughter-in-law, Christine Heideman in 2002.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

He enjoyed playing 500, cribbage, gardening, farming, and simply enjoying a cold beer. In July, 2015 Peter moved to the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care, where he was well known for his humor, jokes, and stories about moonshine. Peter liked to watch The Price is Right, Jeopardy, Judge Judy, and old western TV shows, as part of his daily routine.

Ronnie “Skip” Wiehoff, age 61 of Albany passed away Friday, April 26, 2019 at St. Cloud Hospital Emergency in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 2 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Ronald Michael Wiehoff was born March 17, 1958 in Melrose, Minnesota, the son of Margaret Clara (Stanczyk) and Ronald Joseph Wiehoff. He attended school in Blaine. As a young boy, he acquired the nickname “Skip” and many people continue to call him by that name. Ronnie was a very hard worker and took great pride in doing his very best at work, no matter the job he was hired to do. Within a short time, he was would make his way into a management position

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Peter P. Kurtz, age 96 of Avon, will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, May 2nd at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel. Burial will follow the service in the parish cemetery. Peter died at Mother of Mercy Care Center in Albany on Saturday. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM, Thursday at the church in St. Wendel.

Peter was born April 4, 1923 in Avon to Frank and Francis (Kroll) Kurtz. He attended country school in Avon through 8th grade before working on his parents’ farm. He married Alvina (Wunderlich) on July 8th, 1953 at Church of all Saints - St. Mary in Holdingford. He served in the US Army during the World War II. Peter farmed, and worked at Landy Meat Packing Plant in St. Cloud, and the creamery in Albany.

In 1963, he bought his parents farm where he and Alvina lived and raised their children.

Peter was a lifetime member of the

When Ron’s work was finished, he always enjoyed spending time with his four sons. In his younger years, he enjoyed bareback riding and competing in rodeos, playing the drum set, snowmobiling and hunting.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Sharon; four sons, Ronnie Wiehoff and his wife, Wendy of Watkins, Austin Wiehoff of Melrose, Tyler Wiehoff of Albany, and Brandon Wiehoff of Albany; grandchildren, Logan, Emrick, Briana, Westlyn, and Kinley; sister, Linda (Richard) West of Meire Grove; brother, Scott (Laurie) Wiehoff of Melrose and other family members.

Memorial Service was held Monday, April 29 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany for Richard R. Richter, 71 of Avon who passed away on Tuesday, April 23 at his home. Rev. Steven Olson officiated and burial was at

the parish cemetery.

Richard was born on January 27, 1948 to Ervin and Frances (Scheunemann) Richter in Albany, MN. He was the third born of 8 children. Richard was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany.

House Democrats are expected to pass their Health and Human Services Finance bill (H.F. 2414) which increases health care costs, cuts funding to nursing homes and fails to prevent rampant fraud in Minnesota’s child care and other public programs.

The bill includes an extension of the health care provider tax that will add more than $2.5 billion to the cost of Minnesotans’ health care over the next four years, and includes changes to nursing home reimbursement rates that result in $68 million in cuts to Minnesota nursing facilities. The bill also fails to extend Minnesota’s reinsurance program, which could cause premium rates to skyrocket next year.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the April Senior High student of the month, senior Emily Beseman.

Emily is the daughter of Tom and Theresa Beseman.

Emily’s hobbies include going shopping with her friends, shooting hoops, hunting, watching Netflix and playing with her kitties. She plans to attend Concordia College in Moorhead, majoring in nursing. Her love of sports is demonstrated by playing softball, basketball and volleyball since 7th grade. She has also participated in the theatre productions in her 8th and 12th grade years. Emily stays busy outside of school by volunteering at her church and playing bingo and interacting with the elderly in area nursing homes. Her achievements include being on the A Honor Roll since 7th grade. She has won numerous awards for her athletic abilities including all area and all conference MVP in basketball All Conference for all three sports, all time leading scorer at Swanville for Girls Basketball, all state team honorable mention, athlete of the month several times and the Central MN Athena Award and being part of

Emily’s favorite thing about school has been being involved in sports, the friendships she has formed though sports and the fact that it gives you a break from homework for a little bit. She advises other students that “Make your memories count in high school. It goes by fast and you’re going to miss it.”

Art instructor Kerry Osberg says “I have really enjoyed getting to know Emily over the past few years. She is a kindhearted person that looks out for her fellow classmates, and she is able to get along with everyone! Emily excels at everything she sets out to do. She is a very talented artist and competitive athlete, and she is also successful in her academics. Emily is remarkably down to earth and authentic in nature. She doesn’t revel in her own achievements, but instead enjoys seeing others succeed! I will miss Emily greatly after she graduates, however I am excited to see how her contributions to the world make a difference!”

Evie’s Flower Gardens in Avon

By Dave Raden, Avon I stopped at Evie Fishers last summer to talk to her about Evie’s Flower Garden. Evie started and finished a beautiful landscape. It went from an ugly, swampy area with brush and trees and became Evie’s Flower Garden.

Evie lives on the South side of County Road 54 in Avon. From her bay window, she could see the North side of Lake Wobegon Trail. After her husband Ervin said, “Can’t you do something about that brush across the road?” Evie then decided to make a bunch of flower gardens.

Her first was a huge raised flower

garden. After that, her husband passed away and his favorite flower was hollyhocks.

She then asked Lange Trenching to come and dig everything up and level it.

Then Tom Studniski came with a huge disc and leveled it off.

Next Evie planted a bunch of lilac trees. Lesters Water Works trenched a hose under the road so she could water all of her flowers.

Evie continues to work on her garden, weeding, watering, cutting grass and keeping it maintained.

Evie wishes to have the public to come and enjoy her picnic area. She

And why do we make wrong choices? Again our psalmist has the answer: “If my people would but listen to me...I would subdue their enemies.”

Whenever we walk in our own ways, individually or as a nation, we will suffer from our “enemies” - whatever would defeat or destroy us. God allows us that choice.

If you have done none of these things or just a few you can still get good value for your car. A clean car will usually bring more money faster than a dirty one and often people buy on impulse because of looks alone.

When they start to fail you may feel more bounce in the suspension or even feel the chassis bottom out over hard bumps. Usually before you feel the bounce braking distance and handling will be decreased. As they age the compressed gas/oil mixture that is used internally will begin to leak, first the gas which goes unseen and next the oil which can usually be detected leaking down the body of the units. Any sign of leakage or excessive bounce indicates that it is time for replacement. Mileage wise at about 50,000 miles or so they will start to lose performance. If you were to drive a vehicle with new units then drive yours you would probably see a noticeable difference. This difference can mean shorter stopping times, better handling, and a smoother ride. For your vehicle with 110,000 miles and five years it is time for replacement.

We’d like to buy a home in the $250,000 to $275,000 price range in the near future, and we plan on saving $60,000 for a down payment. It should take a little less than two years to save that much money.

When should we begin the search for a good real estate agent and start the underwriting process?

-Sarah Dear Sarah, I’m really proud of you two. You’re being very intentional and goal-oriented about getting control of your finances and the home buying process.

I’d advise starting a conversation with a quality mortgage company when you’re about five or six months away from your savings goal date.

There’s “pre-approval,” but there’s also something called “certified.” That’s a step beyond pre-approved, and it basically puts you in a position to make an offer when you’re ready for the purchase. So, getting certified as a buyer is very helpful. After that, sit down and talk with a few agents. Interview them, and decide on someone you like and trust. Find an experienced agent you’re comfortable with to guide you through the real estate world, and then start outlining your search and buying strategy.

What I would not do is jump from agent to agent. There’s a tremendous benefit in finding someone you trust and feel good about. I’m talking about a buyer’s agent who’s going to fight for you. This means someone who will show you several different properties, keep your wants and needs foremost

in their mind, and help you get the best possible buy on your new home!

-Dave Dear Dave, My husband and I were listening to your radio show the other day. In it, you were speaking to a lady about buying a home. When you talk about mortgage payments being 25 percent or less of your take-home pay, does this figure include taxes and insurance or just principal and interest?

-Ann Dear Ann, That figure includes taxes and insurance, too. The whole idea is to make sure your house payment is manageable. You don’t want to have so much money going toward your mortgage every month, what I call being “house poor,” that you can’t take care of your other financial responsibilities or enjoy life.

It’s simple. You have more money when you don’t have debt. If you want to build wealth, you have to get out of the payment business. When one-third to one-half of everything you bring home is going to creditors, you have less money for other stuff—other important stuff.

Trust me, I get it. A home is a huge expense that very few people, especially those just starting out, can afford to pay for in cash. That’s why I don’t beat people up for getting a 15-year, fixedrate mortgage. But that’s the only kind of mortgage I recommend.

And yes, make sure the monthly payments are just 25 percent, or less, of your take-home pay!

Valentine J. “Val” Arceneau Valentine J. “Val” Arceneau, age 81 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Valentine John Arceneau was born June 15, 1937 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Daniel and Catherine (Ehresman) Arceneau. Val served in the U.S. Army Reserves and was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Bernadette “Bernie” Revermann on May 21, 1977 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Val farmed near St. Martin his entire life until his retirement in 2000. The couple moved to Melrose and Val continued

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Bernie Arceneau of Melrose; children, Joey (Emily) Arceneau of Winthrop, Cheryl (Randy) Hellermann of Greenwald, Bob (Anita) Arceneau of Melrose, Dale Arceneau of Melrose, and Cindy (Dave) Hemmesch of Melrose; 14 grandchildren; sisters, Sr. Modesta Arceneau, O.S.B. of St. Benedict’s Monastery, Marcella Eibensteiner of Elrosa, and Elizabeth (Norbert) Osendorf of Roscoe; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds anxious boaters that wearing a life jacket is a critical safety necessity during the spring “cold water” season.

While boaters should always wear a life jacket no matter the water temperature or season, public safety officials stress wearing a life jacket – not just having it on the boat – is the one action that significantly increases the chances of surviving a fall into cold water.

“The shock of falling into cold water triggers your gasp reflex, which more than likely means inhaling water,” said Lisa Dugan, DNR boating safety representative. “Wearing a life jacket gives you a fighting chance to get your head above water, stay calm instead of panicking, and call for help before hypothermia sets in.”

Though air temperatures continue to rise, water temperatures statewide are still dangerously cold – cold enough to

cause the gasp reflex and incapacitate even strong swimmers in less than one minute.

In Minnesota, more than 30 percent of boating fatalities occur on cold water, and accident records show the victims are disproportionately male.

“Over the past decade, we’ve seen a steady and troubling trend that indicates men between the ages of 20 and 60 are the most likely to drown while boating, and are the least likely to be wearing a life jacket,” Dugan said.

“Cold-water drowning victims in Minnesota are also much more likely to be anglers than any other type of recreational boater. Add this up, and it’s clear that if male anglers were to put their safety first and put on their life jackets, a significant percentage of boating deaths could easily be prevented.”

Long floor sessions – up to 14 hours – marked last week’s schedule as we came back from the Easter break and got right into debating the major spending bills that will fund state government for the next two years, beginning on July 1.

First up was the K-12 education bill that spends nearly $20 billion, followed by the jobs and energy bill. The massive Health and Human Services bill, both literally and financially, was next up.

That bill has the distinction of being the largest bill, in terms of length, to ever be debated and passed on the House floor.

It was nearly 1,200 pages, and someone looking for something to do actually weighed the bill and it tipped the scale at 12 pounds!

The House tax bill was also worked on and passed last week. It contains some good provisions, but also some massive tax increases. The agriculture bill, along with provisions pertaining to housing, was taken up next. And we finished the week by starting on the transportation bill and having it “laid over” until this week, when the remaining

One provision of the energy bill caused a great deal of discussion and several amendments. It pertains to what are called “Community Solar Gardens,” which are smaller solar installations in Xcel Energy territory whose power production the utility is required by law to purchase. There is currently no limit on the number of these arrays that Xcel must purchase power from, and the cost of the electricity generated by them is much higher than other methods. The state has determined the value of solar power produced by these gardens at around 12 cents per kilowatt hour, and that’s what the power company pays for this power.

This, despite the fact that large-scale solar and wind power can be produced for much less: in that four cent range. As a result, the added cost of purchasing all this community solar power is added to the monthly bills of Xcel customers. The legislation that was passed last week encourages even more of these gardens in Greater Minnesota, by taking away the requirement that those who sign up for these installations need to be residents of the county where they are located or in a contiguous county.

These solar gardens seem to be popping up all over the area. If this legislation becomes law, look for even more of them, with subscribers from all over

As sunfish bite heats up, anglers encouraged to eat small fish Feeling that tug on the line, an angler sets the hook and reels in a small sunfish, then asks the perennial question: Should I keep it?

Sunfish, also known as bluegills and pumpkinseeds, are a go-to species for anglers looking for a meal and many anglers may be surprised to know they’re actually encouraged to keep small ones up to the limit set by the Department of Natural Resources. These fish are nutritious and safe to eat regularly, according to consumption guidelines from the Department of Health.

“We encourage anglers to keep sunfish under 7 inches and consider releasing the ones 9 inches or larger,” said Jon Hansen, fisheries management consultant. “This is opposite what many anglers grew up hearing but it’s good news for anyone who wants high odds of bringing home a meal of local, healthy food.”

Small sunfish are plentiful and easier to catch than large ones. Keeping small ones has little impact on populations. In contrast, when anglers keep only the large sunfish, which are usually males guarding nests, the small males remaining in the population don’t have any need to compete with larger males to spawn and instead of growing, they devote their energy to spawning at younger ages.

After ice-out, sunfish move into shallow, warmer water to eat and lat-

er spawn. After spawning they can be found loitering near aquatic plants, or near docks. Sunfish can be caught readily throughout the state and seasons are open all year.

Fish are a good source of protein. For pregnant women, fish contain healthy fats that are important for a developing fetus and eating fish can lower the risk of heart disease.

A person can’t always tell if fish are safe to eat by looking at them, or even by how clean the water appears. The Minnesota Department of Health helps bridge this information gap by providing fish consumption guidelines based on fish species, waterbody, and exposure risk for different types of people. In general, sunfish have lower levels of mercury than other fish; however fish from some waters have other contaminants that impact the guidelines.

Funds are available to property owners in Todd County who have a noncompliant septic system and who meet the income requirements. Septic systems that are eligible for grant funding are those that are failing as defined by the MPCA which includes systems that cause sewage to backup frequently into home, allows sewage water to reach the ground surface, have tanks that are not water tight, cesspools and leach pits, and systems failing to have proper separation to the water table.

Grant funds cannot be used to cover costs on a septic system for new dwellings even if it is to replace an existing non-compliant system. Applicants must not have any existing land use violations on their property (excluding septic violations).

Successful applicants can have up to 80% of replacement septic system costs covered by the program. Program funds are provided by Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and the Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR).

Maximum annual household income cannot exceed USDA Low Income Levels listed above.

How to Apply: 1. Complete an application form and return it with financial verification of income level to the Planning and Zoning office (call 320-732-4420 for an application). Incomplete applications can not be considered for funding.

2. Applications will be ranked when a pool of applications are received and preference for funding will be determined based on income level, condition of the existing system, proximity to surface water, and threat to health. The next deadline for submitting completed applications is June 30, 2019.

Once Application is Approved: 1. Once notified that you have been selected to receive funding, you will need to obtain two bids from any state licensed septic installer. Return completed bid forms to Planning and Zoning.

2. Sign and return cost share contract and maintenance plan to Planning and Zoning.

3. A septic design from contractor must be submitted to P & Z and a septic permit purchased.

For sunfish, statewide guidelines are one meal per week for women who are or may become pregnant and children under 15, and the guidelines don’t advise any limit to the number of sunfish meals others should eat.

Anglers should check for site-specific advice that pertains to the water they’re fishing. If eating fish from a variety of waters or a specific water isn’t listed, anglers should follow the statewide guidelines. Both site-specific and statewide guidance on eating fish can be found at bit.ly/FishConsumptionGuidanceMN. The site ChooseYourFish.org is another source for statewide consumption guidelines and has recipes and some cooking videos – including recipes for bluegill chowder and perch skillet.
