Be a goal digger -By Harvey Mackay Good old Charlie Brown from the “Peanuts” cartoon fame had a hard time understanding the value of taking aim at his goals while shooting his bow and arrow in his back yard into the fence.

After shooting an arrow he would run over to the fence and draw a target around it.

Suddenly Lucy shows up and says: “That's no way to have target practice! You are supposed to draw the target and then shoot at it.”

Charlie responds, “I know that, Lucy, but if you do it my way, you never miss!”

Sadly many people approach life like Charlie Brown. They cheat or are afraid to set goals for fear of failure. Don’t give up on your goals, or your goals will give up on you. The harder you work for something, the greater you’ll feel when you achieve it. Goals give you a sense of accomplishment.

Tony Robbins said, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.”

Goals can create more excitement in our lives and prevent boredom. They stretch us and make work more fun. Goals give us a sense of purpose and help identify what we want. Goals keep us pressing on and enable us to accomplish more.

“People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going,” said Earl Nightingale, one of the motivational authors and radio personalities I followed when starting my business career.

In short, setting goals is an important prerequisite for success. But the way you set your goals, and pursue them, can be determined by many factors. One of them, according to a study

by Leadership IQ, may be your gender.

The survey, in which 2,506 women and 2,184 men participated, showed that women are more emotionally connected to their goals than men. That makes them more likely to hang on when the going gets tough.

The study also found that men visualize their goals better than women. This gives them greater direction and focus.

Women are more likely to procrastinate. They tend to feel less urgency about accomplishing their goals, which can undermine their efforts.

Women tend to set more difficult goals. Men are less likely to challenge themselves and step out of their comfort zones.

Each individual is unique when it comes to setting and achieving goals, but we can all stand to check our blind spots from time to time.

Bottom line, it’s difficult to advance in your career unless you’re working toward goals.

Setting goals that will inspire and motivate you are crucial. Aim for goals that are: • Quantifiable. You should be able to measure success in objective terms so everyone can see the value of your efforts.

• Challenging. If goals are too easy, chances are your objective won’t have significant impact on your organization.

• Realistic. Although challenge is important, pursuing an impossible dream will result only in a morale-crushing letdown.

• Flexible. Don’t back yourself into a corner.

Although you don’t want to adjust your goals to suit your results, be willing to modify your ambitions if circumstances propel your original objective out of reach.

“If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things,” said Albert Einstein.

In his book "The Spirit of St. Louis," the

famed aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh recalled addressing a group of naval officers on the subject of long-distance aerial navigation.

This was only a few weeks prior to him being the first person to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean to Paris from New York.

“What kind of charts do you intend to use?” one officer asked him.

“The same as you carry on ships at sea,” Lindbergh answered.

“Suppose you strike a wind change in the night, and it drifts you far off course,” said a second skeptic.

“A navigating error wouldn't be too serious,” said Lindbergh. “This flight is not like shooting for an island. I can't very well miss the entire European continent.”

Lindbergh got a good laugh at that line. But there is a moral here for anyone preparing for a difficult and risky assignment. You don't want to aim for too small a target. That is because sudden market or technological change can happen at any time, and you must be prepared for it. But most of all, it is vitally important to have a carefully prepared, and flexible, flight plan to guide you as you begin.

It is now the time to harvest something called ramps, wild garlic or wild onions. For those of you who are unfamiliar with these spring treats, I'll say that I really look forward to their appearance. They appear in a wooded area which is somewhat more damp, but not in a water covered area. They are easily recognizable now, since their green foliage gets started a little earlier than the other plants surrounding them. Their leaves begin at ground level and appear similar to Lilly of the Valley, but may grow up to a foot in height.

Locating them later in spring is more difficult since their neighboring plants will make them harder to find.

To gather them, take a small pail and a narrow spade. Push the spade to a depth of about 6" about 1 and half inches from the plant. Push down on the spade to lift the plant out of the dirt. Shake out the dirt and put in the pail. When you get home, put some water in the pail to wash. Clip off the roots and save the ramp as you would a spring garden onion. Some also use the tops as an addition to salads or scrambled eggs. My favorite way is to put the cleaned onion parts in water and refrigerate.

Put some salt in a dish, take a ramp and dab it's end in the salt and eat it. Raw onion effects my digestive system, but the ramps have no adverse effects.

The harvesting season will last about 3 weeks, allowing the ramps to get up to an inch in diameter. Along with the size increase, the onion flavors become more noticeable.

Gas and Ramps

Memorial Day is coming soon. I tried to find a subject that was from the past and is usually not given much thought today. I thought a good subject would be mustard gas.

This now outlawed method of warfare was used primarily during WWI, but was used by Japanese against China in WWII. Initially mustard gas cylinders were placed in strategic positions, which when the wind conditions were favorably blowing toward concentrations of enemy troops, the cylinders were opened and the wind carried the gas to the enemy. It was also spread by artillery and dropping from air planes.

Mustard gas was hard to detect, since in would remain an exposed area for several months, frequently in a lethal layer close to the ground. When one discovered that they had been exposed to mustard gas, it probably would begin to show effects a day or two later.

The first noticeable indication of poisoning was a breakout of skin irritations in an exposed body area. The irritation progressed so far as to cause bleeding and eventual death. The next common irritation was in the bronchial system, which would progressively experience irritations in the throat and lungs, which resulted in a choking death. Sometimes the effect would begin in the digestive system, causing a breakdown of the stomach and intestines. The ultimate result was an early mortality rate of about 3%, but the recovery period was months and in many cases, the damage caused by mustard gas turned to cancer. Scars and disabilities were permanent remembrances for some of the victims.

Most of the veterans that had first hand experience with mustard gas have now passed.

I am certain that there are other gas products in war pantries that are more hazardous than mustard gas, but the victims are mostly not known. Memorial Day offers a little time to reflect on the victims of mustard gas and their

These were the words of my brother last week, who lives and works at a Bible Camp in southern Alabama. He saw the snake heading into the building through a hole of all things. He acted as quick as he could and stepped on the snake now partly in and partly out. He called for the camp secretary to bring a shovel, quick.

Then the snake started to back out of the hole.

My brother stepped back and started to swat the snake with a broom. As he was taking his best shot at this now very mad snake, he stepped back and tripped, falling backwards breaking his hip. The snake slithered under the steps where my brother now lay but miraculously left him alone. Well, three days later, and a few screws in his hip, he is on his way home, worn out but safe.

Now when I think of a snake, I think of the devil. When the devil tempted Eve to eat the fruit, he used a serpent… but I always think of snakes. FYI, I hate snakes, even dead snakes. Are there areas in your life that you let Satan in? Maybe there is a small hole, or crack in your armor where he gets in. For the most part you don’t do anything about it, sin is fun and exciting. You tried to stop him the one time when you were strong enough to handle the temptation, but you lost the battle. Now what do you do?

1 Peter 5:8 says “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”

Jesus used scripture to do battle with Satan, and He was sinless, maybe we should be getting into God’s Word so we can do battle with a shovel. Martha M. Butkowski

M a r t h a M. Butkowski, age 100 of New Munich, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 20, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 27 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Martha Maria Hiltner was born October 28, 1921 at home to John and Agnes (Dickhaus) Hiltner. She grew up on the farm in Melrose with her 12 siblings. Martha attended school through the eighth grade. She was united in marriage to Florian “Bud” Butkowski on June 1, 1950 in Melrose. They moved to St. Paul where the called home until they retired and returned to St. Rosa.

Survivors includer her children, Jane (David “Sparky”) Johnson of Freeport and June (Ted) Smith of Everett, Washington; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Carlson of St. Paul; grandchildren, Karla (Jim) Maldonado, Daryl (Lyndsay) Johnson, Jayme (Paul) Schettner, Mark (Sarah) Emerson, and Megan and Regina Smith; step-grandchildren, Robert (Susan) Darby, Carolyn (Shaun) Krebsbach, and Sara (Salvador) Vargas; great-grandchildren, Michaela, Dalton, Dash, Shianne, Matthew, Alli, Salvador, Jr., Manny, Kamila, Viviana, Jacolby, Marilyn, Myles, and Grace; siblings, Lidwina Wolbeck, Alphonse Hiltner, Leander (Linda) Hiltner, Clarissa Barthel, and Anna Mae (Donald) Speldrich; in-laws, Carolyn Hiltner, Irene Hiltner, Lucille Stanek, Laverne Fleischhacker, Melvin (Carol) Butkowski, Annette (Sylvester) Hollenkamp, Raymond Butkowski, Dorothy Butkowski, and Mary Ann Butkowski; and many nieces and nephews.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Florian “Bud” Butkowski; parents; son, Mark Butkowski; sisters, Leona Wolbeck, Alvina Hiltner, and Juletta Wolbeck; and brothers, Edward, Edwin, Raymond, Melvin, and Cyril Hiltner.

Serving as casket bearers will be Daryl Johnson, Robert Darby, Paul Schettner, James Maldonado, Mark Emerson, and Dalton Maldonado. Cross bearer will be Shianne Schettner and scripture bearer will be Dash Johnson. The reader will be Michaela Maldonado.

Eileen Delores Fussy

Eileen Delores (Feia-Pilarski) Fussy, 93-yearold resident of Bowlus formerly of Holdingford, MN died Sunday, May 22 at St. Gabriel's Hospital in Little Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 26 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Hedwigs Church in Holdingford, MN. A visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M until the hour of the service on Thursday at the church.

The burial will be held in the parish cemetery.

Eileen Delores Feia was born January 4, 1929 in Holdingford, MN to the late William and Catherine E. (Kuklok) Feia. She grew up in the Holdingford area where she attended country school District #203 until the eighth grade. After completing her schooling, she moved to St. Paul and worked at the Angle Inn as a waitress. She met and married Lawrence Pilarski on June 5, 1948 at St. Hedwig's Catholic Church in Holdingford, MN. The couple made their home in Minneapolis, MN where she worked at Fulton Bag Company. In 1956, the couple moved to Holdingford, MN, where they farmed. Lawrence died on June 25, 1961. Eileen continued living and working on the farm and raising her children.

Eileen met Alois "Al" Fussy, and the couple was married on July 7, 1979 at St. Hedwig's Catholic Church in Holdingford, MN. The couple made their home on Al's farm near Bowlus for 10 years. The couple sold the farm and built a home three miles south of Bowlus in Two Rivers Township. Eileen was active with St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus, Christian Mothers, Rosary Society, St. Hedwigs Catholic Church in Holdingford and the Bowlus American Legion Auxiliary. She was a wonderful homemaker, baker and enjoyed cooking for family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are children, Valerian "Val" Pilarski of Little Falls, June (Ray) Puchalla of Bowlus, Paul Pilarski of St. Joseph, Allan (Doris) Pilarski of St. Augusta; daughterin-law, Joan Pilarski of Albany; stepchildren, Thomas (Joanne) Fussy of Royalton, Edward (Joanne) Fussy of Bemidji, Leroy (Karen) Fussy of Swanville, Roger "OZ" Fussy of Holdingford, Rose (Tom) Haroldson of Nevis; 17 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Viola Feia of Madison, Wi; stepbrother, Fred Frieheimer, Phil (Diane) Warzecha; step-sister, Veronica Frieheimer; step-sisters-inlaw, Jan Warzecha, Donna Warzecha, Eileen Warzecha.

Teresa M. Kleinschmidt

Teresa M. “Trix” Kleinschmidt, age 93 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Fairway Pines Assisted Living in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 27 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jim Maderak officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Teresa Marie Liebel was born April 27, 1929 on a farm east of Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Forest Burdick and Loretta Liebel. Trix was baptized at St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

She attended Sauk Centre Elementary School and graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1948. During high school, Trix worked at the Main Street Theater and after graduation, worked at the Red Owl. She felt blessed to have wonderful employers and coworkers.

On June 21, 1949 Trix married Orville “Ollie” Kleinschmidt at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. They raised their six children on Sinclair Lewis Avenue for 13 years then moved to Ash Street. Trix was a full-time mother and homemaker. She was active in the community as a Christian Mother and other activities while Ollie started Centre Jobbing Wholesale Business. Trix was able to return to work when her two youngest were finished with elementary school. She began working at the Sauk Centre Chamber of Commerce for a few years and then at Vocational Biographies and Main Street Press.

Trix and Ollie were avid card players. They loved attending the yearly candy conventions in St. Paul. They belonged to the Alley Cats and the Sauk Centre Country Club where Trix was involved in many activities, especially Ladies Day and the Father’s Day Golf Tournament.

She was also involved in the Birthday Club, Knitting Club, Bridge Club, and the Luncheon Club which is now known as the Golden Girls.

In 1968, Trix and Carol Zimmerman started the Leftovers Homemakers Club, because nobody wanted them, hence the name “The Leftovers.”

Trix and Ollie were able to travel to every state by bus trips with friends or by plane. She also loved to gamble, especially when it came to slot machines. In July of 2017, Trix decided it was time for her to continue her life at Fairway Pines Assisted Living where she became like the ambassador. She would welcome everyone and show them around. She loved it! During her last 11 days, the outpouring of love for her from all the staff and residents was overwhelming.

Survivors include her daughter, Renee (Gary) Leinonen of Sauk Centre; son, Robbie (Gloria) Kleinschmidt of Avon; daughter-in-law, Carol Kleinschmidt of Sauk Centre; son-in-law, Philip Behnen of Sauk Centre; grandchildren, Ryan (Abby), Jamie (Melissa), Kayla (Adam), and Angela (Travis); five great-grandchildren, Carter, Gemma, Tyson, Blake, Brooke, Bella, Emma, and Addy; brother, David Burdick of St. Cloud; sister, Cecilia Kortan of Sauk Centre; sister-in-law, Jeanette Kleinschmidt of Sauk Centre; and many nieces and nephews.

Trix was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie Kleinschmidt on May 28, 2012; parents; children, Randy Kleinschmidt on October 12, 1963, Ronnie Kleinschmidt on September 4, 1977, Roxann Behnen on March 26, 2020; and son, Rick Kleinschmidt on November 11, 2020.

Bonita L. “Bonnie” Woitalla, age 73 of St. Anna, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at her home in St. Anna, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna with Rev. Edward Vebelun officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Bonita LeAnn Adolph was born February 12, 1949 in Eden Valley, Minnesota to Ferdinand and Ethel (Cutis) Adolph. In 1959, the family moved to Holdingford. After graduating from high school, Bonnie began working in Minneapolis for two years. She married John Woitalla on June 14, 1969 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Together, the couple farmed, and later Bonnie worked at The Landing in St. Anna for five years and at Mills Fleet in Waite Park for two years.

Bonnie was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna. She was on the parish council for six years, funeral lunch coordinator for 39 ½ years, president and vice president of the Christian Mothers, and was on the bazaar committee for one year. She enjoyed listening to KASM along with dancing to Old Time music. She cooked and baked for all those that helped on the farm. In her downtime, she enjoyed playing cards, doing word find puzzles, and relaxing with her cats, Smokey and Sunny, but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren, Mikayla, Grace, and Abby.

Survivors include her husband, John Woitalla of St. Anna; children, Kurt (Wendy) Woitalla, Kristi Woitalla, and Keith (Patty) Woitalla all of St. Anna; grandchildren, Mikayla, Grace, and Abby Woitalla; sister-in-law, Louise Adolph of Holdingford; and mother-in-law, Mary Woitalla of Albany.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Ferdinand and Ethel Adolph; brothers, Larry and Rodney Adolph; sister-in-law, Cathy Adolph; brothers-in-law, James Rakotz and Raymond Woitalla; and father-in-law, Alois Woitalla.

Dear Motor Medics, My car runs pretty well, and I am not one to bring it in just to have it checked over once in a while. I am more of the kind of person who visits the shop once the car has broken. After listening to your show, I am thinking I may be able to save some money by doing some preventative maintenance instead of waiting for the major breakdowns. Recently my brakes started making some noise, but they don’t do it every day. How can I tell the difference between needing brake repairs or if it’s just a little noise; and if I wanted to be proactive on brake maintenance how often should they be checked? I have been in before for a squeak and they said they were fine, just a little rusty.

- Joanne in Madison, Wisconsin Dear Joanne, Routine maintenance will save you money on repairs. Regular inspections should be performed on safety items at each oil change and addressed as needed. These inspections are done for free at most shops so check around if yours does not offer this service.

Inspect brakes annually and completely check them right away if there is a change in pedal travel or if noise is heard when applying them accompanied by grinding. Damp mornings can cause rust on the braking surfaces resulting in noise. This should go away after a couple of pedal applications and should not be felt in the pedal.

I drive a 2001 Ford Explorer and I am getting ready to pull a trailer with it. I have owned it for several years and it has a hitch but no trailer light connector. This will be my first time pulling a trailer with this vehicle. Can I just tap into the taillights to connect my trailer light connector, or do I need something special? I don’t want to cause a problem with the vehicle. I have also serviced the transmission and rear end prior to towing as well.

Dear Darren, Great idea you had on the proactive transmission and rear differential service.

Depending on the size of the trailer and load you may think about a transmission cooler if the Explorer is not equipped with one. For the trailer wiring you need to make sure you do not overload the electrical system. On this vehicle and many others, a tow wiring kit is advised. Available at most auto parts stores this kit takes its power from the battery directly and uses relays activated by the vehicles lights to power the trailer lights preventing damage to the vehicles system.

Burtrum City • May 2, 2022 The Burtrum City Council meeting was called to order at 7 pm on Monday, May 2, 2022 by Council Member Mayor Ron Strassburg.

In attendance was Ron Strassburg, Sharon Erickson, Sara Macho, Chad Landowski and Laura Horvath.

Minutes from the April 4, 2022 meeting were read and approved; a motion to approve was made by Chad Landowksi, and seconded

by Sara Macho, upon vote motion was carried and minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved; the city discussed current bills/invoices; finance report was accepted, and bills were paid, with a motion made by Sharon Erickson and seconded by Sara Macho.

Formula Shortage

Feeding babies is vital, and with the current formula shortage, it can be a very stressful situation for parents who can’t find formula. If you’re struggling to find baby formula, here are some tips that may help.

• Check smaller stores and dollar stores, which may not be out of supply when the bigger stores are.

• If you can afford it, buy formula online until store shortages ease. Purchase from well-recognized distributors and pharmacies rather than individually sold or auction sites.

• For most babies, it is OK to switch to any available formula, including store brands, unless your baby is on a specific extensively hydrolyzed or amino acid-based formula. Ask your pediatrician about recommended specialty formula alternatives available for your baby.

• Check social media groups. There are groups dedicated to infant feeding and formula, and members may have ideas for where to find formula. Make sure to check any advice with your pediatrician.

• Contact Todd County Health & Human Services’ WIC program for help at 320732-4456.

• If you breastfeed and use formula, there are some ways you can try to increase your milk supply; however, this does not happen overnight and is not an option avail-
