Baseball, business have a lot in common -By Harvey Mackay Baseball season is in full swing, but it might be a very different game if Pete Browning had not broken his bat in 1884.

The story of how the iconic Louisville Slugger baseball bat came to be is fascinating.

According to the famous bat company’s history, it all began when the 17-year-old son of J. F. Hillerich skipped out of work one day to watch a local baseball game.

Browning, the star of the hometown team, broke his bat during the game.

Young Bud Hillerich, a woodworking apprentice, invited him to his father’s woodshop, offering to make a new bat for him.

Browning, who was known as “The Louisville Slugger,” used the new bat and had three hits in his next game.

Pretty soon, more players started to visit the shop for bats.

Bud’s father was not pleased by this development, until it became quite

apparent that the growing demand for bats, and the ensuing profits, could not be denied. And the Louisville Slugger became more than one hitter’s nickname.

Currently, more than 3000 Louisville Sluggers are manufactured each day, and that number swells to 5,000 during spring training. Young Bud Hillerich saw an opportunity to help one person and changed the face of the sport.

Baseball teaches many lessons and offers plenty of inspiration, even from decades-old stories. So many examples of innovation and perseverance come from the sport. And they often relate to business.

We’re often told in business that we should work on our weaknesses instead of our strengths, but let me tell you about Jim Kaat, who pitched many years for my hometown Minnesota Twins.

Kaat went in to talk to his new pitching coach, Johnny Sain, during spring training before the 1966 season. Sain asked Kaat to name his top four pitches and what pitches he felt he should work on the most.

Kaat said his best pitch was his fastball, followed by his curve, slider and changeup. He thought if he improved on

his slider and changeup, he would have a good season.

His coach disagreed. Sain told him: “I want you to take a different approach. Work on your fastball. I know it’s your favorite pitch so go out there in practice, warm-ups and during games and concentrate on your fastball.

Throw your fastball 80-90 percent of the time all year, and you’ll win a lot of ball games.”

That season, Kaat threw fastball after fastball and won 26 games to become the American League’s pitcher of the year.

I’m a big believer in continuous improvement. We all can use extra practice and work to get better. I have a saying that goes – Good, better, best; Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Waste Not

To waste is considered by many of us to be like a sin. We were either children of the depression or were children of the children of the depression.

Either way, we were taught that you don’t throw away anything which may be needed, or of value, at some future time. We may save left-overs from a meal, paper or plastic bags from the grocery store, Christmas cards from many years past, newspapers containing stories that must have been relative at one time, magazines and periodicals from years ago.

These items take up space and clutter up our storage areas.

Another problem we create for ourselves is stopping at auctions or garage sales. After all, it is OK to take advantage of a really great bargain, however we already have 4 sets of socket wrenches, 3 air popcorn poppers, 47 t-shirts to wear around home, 7 vases with chickens on them and 3 more coffee makers at home. But we just can’t pass up a deal!

In our younger years, when money was scarce, we found needed items at a reduced price, which was great.

However, that good habit is now creating an inflationary addition to our storage problem. The storage space these extra items require is using space which may be used more effectively in other ways.

If we are now seniors, we may be thinking of how to rid ourselves of the accumulated stuff that is of little value to us. Options include a garage sale, which involves many hours of preparation and having to decide what to do with the remaining unsold items. An auction would get rid of everything, but we usually don’t have enough stuff to interest an auctioneer. We can try to give the stuff to the kids, but they are really not interested because they already have the new and improved models of our stuff. We probably need to consider giving the items to a charity, since they will then be gone and may possibly become an allowed tax deduction.

If an individual is planning to move to a location where the snow is removed and the yard is mowed by someone else, there probably is no room for unused items. There is also the option of renting a storage space, but from personal experience, I can say that if I could sell the items for even half of the storage rent paid, I would be very happy.

The idea for this story came from a conversation with one of my friends, who is also one of my clients. She had a box filled with Medicare information.

The information went back to 2006. She was wondering how long she should keep the information. The answer is that if it is items which are older than

the current year, it really isn’t needed, unless it involves some form of dispute with Medicare. This also applies to home and auto insurance policies.

Another individual I knew had to move to a new home, but was quite upset because a room half full of old newspapers she had saved for over 20 years couldn’t be moved. When traveling through the country, one will notice farms that have a collection of old, partially destroyed machinery, old autos and pickups and various piles of old lumber. Maybe it can be used as a home parts store, but sometime it will have to be eliminated.

Maybe these collections give a special comfort to the collector. They represent a barrier to having nothing, but this barrier is usually of very little economic value. The collections actually show the collectors desire to not be wasteful, is that the solution?

A baseball manager made an announcement to his team at the hotel on the morning of the game that there would be two buses leaving for the ballpark. “The 2 p.m. bus will be for those players who need extra work, and the empty bus will be leaving at 5 p.m.”

Then there’s the value of encouragement.

When Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play major league baseball, was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers, he became a target for racial hate mail and even death threats.

Before one game, Robinson received a threatening phone call that left him so shaken that he was unable to concentrate on the game.

Robinson struck out in one inning with bases loaded. In another inning, he committed a fielding error. The crowd screamed obscenities at him. A time-out was called and the Dodger shortstop, Pee Wee Reese, walked up to the shaken Robinson, put his arm around him, and said: “Jackie, you are the greatest ballplayer I have ever seen. You can do it. And I know something else. One of these days you are going into the Hall of Fame. So, hold your head up high, and play ball like only you can do it.”

Robinson went on to deliver a game-winning hit for his team.

Many years later, Robinson recalled the incident when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He said of Pee Wee Reese: “He saved my life and my career that day. I had lost my confidence, and Pee Wee picked me up with his words of encouragement. He

gave me hope when all hope was gone.”

Mackay’s Moral: You’ll knock it out of the park if you learn these baseball lessons.

Obituaries Alvina B. Woeste

Alvina B. Woeste, age 93, of Melrose, died peacefully on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2018, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Vince Lieser officiating. Rev. Marvin Enneking and Rev. Ken Thielman will concelebrate and Deacon Ernie Kociemba will assist. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following the Mass.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Christian Mothers will pray at 6 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Alvina Bernadine Wessel was born December 5, 1924, in Melrose, Minnesota, to Bernard and Rose (Inderrieden) Wessel.

On January 13, 1942, she married Sylvester G. Woeste at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple lived and farmed in Greenwald until moving to Melrose in 1978. She worked at the St. Mary’s School with the lunch program and volunteered her time at St. Mary’s and St. Andrew’s Schools.

She also assisted with wedding banquets for 20 years at the Melrose VFW. Alvina resided in her home until she moved to Park View in 2002. She then moved to Pine Villa in 2017.

Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting, sewing, gardening, putting puzzles together,

playing cards, collecting bells, singing, and dancing. She was famous for her homemade bread and canned sauerkraut.

Alvina was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 101, and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her children, Jim (Kathy) Woeste of Sauk Centre, Jane (Dale) Rademacher of Sauk Centre, Dan (Rita) Woeste of Greenwald, Rick (Jan) Woeste of St. Stephen, Mary Kay (Bruce) Pederson of Osakis, Shar (Dan) Goihl of Little Birch Lake, Ann (Dave) Terwey of St. Joseph, Kathy Kettler of Melrose, Duane Woeste of Roseville, Peg (Tom Brannan) Zimmer of St. Joseph, and Mark (Patti Holland) Woeste of Grey Eagle; 29 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, and three great-greatgrandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Joyce Poganski, 87, of St. Cloud who died Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Cherrywood Advanced Living in St. Cloud. Rev. Tom Knoblach and Rev. Patrick Sullivan will concelebrate and entombment will be in Assumption Mausoleum. Friends and relatives may call one hour prior to mass on Thursday.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Williams Dingmann Funeral Home, St. Cloud.

Joyce was born on July 23, 1930 in St. Cloud to Frank and Kathryn (Kuebelbeck) Mohr. She was a 1948 graduate of Cathedral High School. On October 11, 1952 Joyce married Roger Poganski at St. Augustine’s Church in St. Cloud. Joyce worked for 5 years as a bookkeeper for the Stearns County Welfare Office. Joyce and Roger had 5 children (4 boys and 1 girl), and she cherished her role as a stay at home mother raising her children. Joyce was a dedicated volunteer and enjoyed helping others wherever and whenever needed. She

was a Cub Scout den mother, taught religion to special education children, served as a charter member of the St. Cloud Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Greeters and volunteered many years for Catholic Charities Food Shelf. She was a member of Christian Mothers at Holy Spirit Catholic Church and volunteered there regularly with her beloved church friends. Joyce enjoyed playing tennis and bridge with her “bridge group” and traveling with her husband. Her most treasured time was being at the lake cabin with her family and many wonderful friends. Joyce’s family was the love of her life and she treasured them all.

Joyce is survived by her five children, Roger “Rock” (Marcia) of Grey Eagle, Rick (Kim) of St. Cloud, Randy (Christine) of St. Cloud, Rob (Lisa) of St. Cloud and Jan (John) Schnettler of St. Cloud and her 14 grandchildren, Ashley (Joe) Holmseth, Craig; Brittney, Austin; Meghan (Robb) Ksiazek, Beth (Joe Dan) Baker, Curran (Jillian), Drew, Adam; John, Thomas “TJ” (Amber) Poganski; Matt, Mike and Maddie Schnettler; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Peggy Powers of Annapolis, MD and brother, Richard (Marilyn) Mohr of St. Cloud.

Joyce is preceded in death by husband, Roger; parents Frank and Kathryn Mohr and brother-in-law, Tom Powers.

Memorials are preferred to Holy Spirit Church, Catholic Charities and Cathedral High School.

Dolores E. Waldorf

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Dolores E. Waldorf, age 88 of Albany, was held Tuesday, May 22 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Burial was in the Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery.

Dolores died on Thursday, May 17 at Mother of Mercy Care center in Albany. Arrangements were made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Dolores was born April 29, 1930 in Freeport to Ralph and Wilhelmina (Wensman) Job. Dolores was united in marriage to Roman J. Waldorf on June 23, 1953 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. The couple made their home on the family dairy farm in Albany, where they proudly raised registered Holsteins for 40 years. Dolores enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, gardening, playing cards and singing with the church choir. She was a member of Christian Mothers, Daughters of Isabella, Knight of Columbus Auxiliary, a volunteer with 4-H, and a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Dolores will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her faith, incredible memory, and friendly spirit.

Dolores is survived by her children; Stephen (Nancy) of Olivia, Carol (Rich) Primus of Albany, Gregory (June) of Avon, Mary (Denny) Popp of Rice, Sharon (Larry) Jacobson of LeRoy, Lucy (Keith) Overman of Freeport, Ronald of Albany, Beverly (Frank ) Tokarz of Victoria, Edith Gerads of St. Stephen, Bonnie (Jeff Solum) of Excelsior, Roxanne (Mark) Newton of Lino Lakes, Chris of St. Cloud, Robert ‘Bob’ (Amy) of Hanover, and Noami ‘Ami’ (Ron) Ohmann of Albany; 32 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren. LaDonna Ebnet

Services celebrating the life of LaDonna Ebnet, age 87 of Holdingford was held Tuesday, May 22 at the Community Country Church in Holdingford.

Burial was in the St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery. LaDonna died Wednesday after a long illness.

LaDonna was born December 14, 1930 in Holdingford to Frank and Ann (Dorosh) Porupsky. She grew up in Holdingford and moved to the twin cities for a short while.

She married Cyril Ebnet on October 2, 1954 in Holdingford. The couple farmed together

near Holdingford for many years. LaDonna also was a bartender at the Holdingford Liquor Store and the Holdingford American Legion. Along with her husband, Cyril, LaDonna helped manage the Holdingford softball park for 37 years. She was a member of the Community Country Church and the Holdingford American Legion Auxiliary.

LaDonna is survived by her husband, Cyril, Holdingford; her children, Daryl (Sue) Ebnet, Holdingford; Wayne (Lori) Ebnet, Holdingford; Neil (Joyce) Ebnet, Holdingford and Cheryl Czeck, Holdingford. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Kenneth Porupsky and sisters, Norma Cheney, Jeneanne Woodard, and son-in-law, Bill “Snuffy” Czeck.

Benefit for Ken Feldewerd to be held June 1 Ken Feldewerd, of Melrose, suffered a 2nd stoke on January 26th, 2018.

He was found in his home unconscious but breathing and was then airlifted to the St. Cloud Hospital where they found large amounts of bleeding in his brain and had to perform a life-saving surgery. He then spent his time recovering and fighting for the next 24 days in the Intensive Care Unit and Neuro-progressive.

To begin rehabilitation, he was then transported to Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul where he began to relearn how to breathe on his own, talk, eat, and regain physical strength. After 24 days, he made the gains needed to leave Bethesda and be moved to a Transitional Care Unit in the Melrose Hospital where he currently resides. Ken is making continuous improvements but has a very long road to recovery.

His wife, Arlene, and daughters, Kayla, Heather, and Erica, are beyond the appreciation for all the amazing family and friends that have been there to support and motivate Ken along this journey. They are hosting a Stroke of Love Benefit for Ken on Friday, June 1st, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the American Legion in Melrose.

He reaches out to us in love and compassion - anxious to warn us of the attractiveness of sin, the power of temptation and the destruction that awaits us. But, like the family in Canada, we are so often too involved in the things of this world to hear His warning.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My husband has an old car that has become a real sticking point between us. He bought it for $2,400, and it needs about $4,000 in repairs and restoration.

Together, we bring home $50,000 a year, and I feel like this car is interfering with our ability to save money and pay off $35,000 in debt. We already have two decent cars we drive to work, so what should I do about this?

-Stacy Dear Stacy, There are lots of guys out there who like shiny toys - especially cars. I get it, because I’m one of them. But these kinds of things are luxuries, and stuff like this should wait until the household and finances are in order. The family should always come first.

Dumping money into this while you two are struggling financially doesn’t make sense. On top of that, it’s causing problems between you two on a deeper level. I’m sure your husband isn’t a bad guy, so try sitting down with him and explaining how it makes you feel.

Let him know what it’s doing to your finances and your marriage. You might even write the financial side down, so he can see exactly what kind of shape you two are in and where the money is going.

Once you do this in a kind, but concerned, manner, it may be a real eyeopener for him. On top of that, you might consider giving him a little incentive to get on board with the idea of getting your finances in order. Suggest that once the debt is gone, and you’ve got some savings in place, there might be a little extra cash on hand to help get that car

up and running.

To answer your question, I don’t think there’s a reason to wait. When two people know they really love each other, they should get married whenever they feel in their hearts the time is right.

At this point, you shouldn’t be thinking about money as anything except an indicator of where you’re going. It doesn’t matter who got into debt or how, because everyone makes mistakes. But if you’re both serious about getting out of debt, living on less than you make, and are in agreement about how the dollars are going to be handled, then — where money is concerned — you’re ready to be married.

Many relationship experts say if a couple can agree on four important things — kids, money, religion, and how to handle the in-laws — they have a great statistical chance of a happy marriage. I believe this, too. And make sure you meet with your pastor for some good, pre-marital counseling before the big day. With all this going for you, I think you two will be okay.

Legislature finishes its work, adjourns

It was a few minutes before midnight Sunday when Speaker of the House Kurt Daudt gaveled the session to a close with the words, “sine die.” We had finished our work, having passed a pension bill and a bonding bill in the final hour of session. Preceding that, in the hours leading up to Sunday night, we passed for the second time a tax bill, and also took a swing at an override vote on legislation that would have provided badly needed funding for our state’s deputy registrars.

The defeat of that deputy registrars bill, the one that made an attempt to partially make whole the folks who have had to endure months of frustration (and additional expense) in dealing with our new license registration system known as MNLARS, is one that left a bad taste. The original legislation would have reimbursed deputy registrars across the state a total of $9 million, based on the number of recent transactions they had reported to the system. We have three of those offices in our district, with locations in Albany, Glenwood, and Sauk Centre. I have visited with folks at each of those offices and heard first-hand their stories of frustration with the new system, which went on-line this past July. They have had to work longer hours, hire additional help, and take more time when logging in every single transaction that goes along with registering or getting new license tabs for a vehicle.

There was widespread support for this additional financial support for those offices. It passed out of the House with strong support, with over 100 votes. Surprisingly, it was vetoed

by Gov. Dayton, who said he supported the funding, but said it wasn’t a complete bill. He said it should have con-

tained additional funding to support the overall MNLARS system and that the money should have come out of the general fund, instead of an internal source of funding that was more closely tied to the actual system.

An override was attempted Sunday night. Needing a super-majority to prevail, a party-line tally with all Republicans voting in favor saw the vote fall 11 short. I realize it’s tough voting against your governor, but this was funding that would help keep the doors open at these offices, and we should have provided it.

Another bill that certainly needs to be signed by the governor relates to taxes and how, if nothing is done to comply with new federal tax changes, it will negatively affect nearly every tax-paying resident of Minnesota. Again, a veto was the result of the first attempt at tax conformity, with the governor saying he wouldn’t sign tax legislation until he got “emergency” funding for school districts in Minnesota.

The result was a new bill passed Sunday that provided $50 million in new funding for schools along with other provisions that relaxed state standards in how different categories of funding could be used by schools. The total package comes in around the $200 million figure. The new funding came from state reserves amid a realization that an additional payment was due to the schools this year from School Trust Lands. It’s one-time money that would provide an additional $57.73 in additional state aid to every public school pupil in the state. It’s a solid infusion of funding, with Melrose due to receive over $77,000, Sauk Centre nearly $62,000, and Albany $103,000. Minnewaska would receive nearly $69,000 and BBE nearly $35,000. Other schools in our immediate area are Alexandria at $243,000 and Paynesville at $53,000.

5 Financial Priorities for Your College Student Local Municipality Minutes

If you’re the parent of a child already attending or about to enter college, you probably have a lot on your mind. That’s understandable. College is an exciting time of life, full of big choices and exciting opportunities. But let’s face it, it’s also a stage of life that can bring temptations — money troubles in particular.

If you have a few concerns about how your child will handle their money in college, you’re not alone. I’ll never forget my own early financial experiences as a young college student—or the day I opened my first credit card bill and saw what I owed.

“Man, that was an expensive pizza!”

The folks who signed me up told me my credit card came with a free T-shirt and a pizza. I got both of those, but they were far from free. They came with consequences no one had warned me about. It started with a few thoughtless purchases—a dinner out, a shopping spree for gifts—but it added up quick.

Somehow, I hadn’t realized the stuff I was buying and enjoying on credit was going to come due as a bill. Throw in the student loans I had taken on, and I was getting into some serious financial trouble. Before I knew what was happening, I was 19 years old, $25,000 in debt, and — for a short time — even sleeping in my car.

But here’s some encouragement. I made it all the way back, got out of debt, and learned the right way to handle money. And your child can win with money, despite a world of pressure to do otherwise. It’s true! As a youth pastor and speaker, I’ve met, worked with, and walked beside many young people who graduated college as strong budgeters, with a clear plan for the future and no debt. So can the college student in your life!

The Big Five While your child is in college, they can lay a solid financial foundation by focusing on just five priorities for managing their money.

With this foundation in place, at least two great things will happen for them: They will be in a strong position to build wealth throughout their life, and they will gain an awesome amount of self-discipline to help them in their career.

Save a $500 Emergency Fund. It might not sound like a lot. But $500 is usually enough to see a college student through most of the financial emergencies that come up, like a broken phone or computer. I know you’re going to want

to help them out as you’re able, but it’s also a great idea to let a young person feel what it’s like to solve a money problem with their own money, instead of using yours or a credit card.

Get Out of Debt. You probably remember from your own time on campus that college students are a major target for credit card companies. Help your child understand that going into debt is no way to start adulthood. If they already have credit cards, encourage them to cut those up and pay them off. The sooner they’re debtfree, the sooner they can begin using their money to go after their dreams.

Pay cash for a car. Most college students will need a car either right away or soon after graduating. But the need for wheels is no excuse to take on a big monthly payment. Paying cash will save your child a lot of money, and they will get a lot more enjoyment from something they actually own.

Pay cash for college. You’ve probably noticed student loans are getting out of hand in America. In 2016, The Wall Street Journal reported that the average college student is graduating with more than $37,000 in student loan debt to pay back. That’s insane! Let your child know that paying for tuition and books is no different than paying for food and gas. By paying for college with cash they’ll immediately be able to use their pay for things they want, instead of paying off debt for years.

Build wealth and give. This one is my favorite, because there’s no better feeling than the one you get while using your money to help those you care about. As Jesus himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

And who has the most freedom to do a lot of good with their money? Those who have been fortunate enough to stay out of debt and build wealth.

One more tip: It’s easy to assume you can only build this foundation if you begin early enough in life. Believe me, that’s not true. It’s never too early to start, but it’s also never too late. Whether your child is just beginning to think about college, or is already enrolled, they can apply these principles to take full control of their money — in school and beyond!

Grey Eagle Township May 7, 2018 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the April 2, 2018 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to accept the minutes, Mike made the second. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for April.

Claims list included claims 31723185 for a total of $44,919.28. This included the new CD and 1st half of the fire contract. Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried.

Mail included advertising, Township membership cards and surplus services – signature card and the renewal of the liability insurance. Ron reviewed the Big Birch Lake newsletter and a letter from Public Works Dept. regarding mileage.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported he had a busy month.

He started with the tar project and brought in some samples. He and Ron would like to have the supervisors meet with Tri-City on the road site to discuss the work that was done. Ray made a motion to have Midwest Asphalt begin with the crack filling as soon as possible. Mike made the 2nd. All in favor. Motion carried. Ray reported seeing several alligator cracks on 341st, Brakken and Breezy Drive.

Ray was authorized to pick up some product to fill these in. A few trees were found during the road check that should be trimmed, Ray will get a price. Ray also asked if the Stop signs on Brakken and 341st could be removed and just have one way stop, like it used to be. He will check with the County Engineer. Ron had a call about maintenance on Aspen, it was decided it would need to be brought up to Township standards and have an area for equipment to turn around. Erv presented the

list from his notes during the road check. Motion by Mike and 2nd by Ray to have those projects taken care for the 2018 season. Motion carried.

Ron made the motion to have the beach maintenance contract awarded to Hinman Lawn Service for the 2018 season. Ray made the 2nd. Motion carried.

Ron reported on the various topics that were covered at the County Township meeting he attended. Election training, gopher bounty, buffer zone and tar projects were discussed.

Ray made a motion that Grey Eagle Township leave the gopher bounty at $1.00 per tail, brought to a supervisor or at the Township meeting. 2nd by Mike. Motion carried.

The shed behind the Township Hall has become an eyesore and will be removed. Clerk will check with the city to see if any demo permits are needed and what the status is on the driveway between the shed and the Town hall.

Letter about the Emergency management assistance grant – no reply.

Some work will be done in the back room of the Town hall to see if we can save on heating costs.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:15 pm.

Burnhamville Township April 24, 2018 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held April 24, 2018 at the Burtrum Community Center.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit.

Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Bruce Johnson and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener.

Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of March 27, 2018 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson. Motion was seconded

by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters from City of Swanville, overweight

permit, mileage certification, and one bid for ditch mowing. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve the overweight permit for milk haulers traveling in Burnhamville Township.

Motion seconded by Sup. Johnson.

Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5567 through 5577: Rev. $1,000.93; R & B $4,838.47. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

City of Swanville will have a public hearing on May 8 at 6:45 to discuss annexing more land from Burnhamville Township which includes a walking path. Sup. Johnson will attend.

Due to poor weather conditions the board changed annual road inspection to Thursday, May 3 at 2:30.

Cranberry Road was washing out.

Contractor replaced the culvert and added gravel.

The board heard an update from the county weed meeting.

Handouts of weeds to watch for were included. Supervisors will do inspections later in June.

Board heard an update from county officer meeting which included information on Wellness Center being built this summer in Long Prairie and shared information on gophers around the county.

The annual township clean-up day is set for Saturday, May 19 from 9-11 am. The board discussed the two bids. Sup. Johnson made a motion to use Tom’s Refuse for clean-up day. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed. Prices will remain the same as last year.

Dust control will be the same procedure as last year with the township doing several intersections, lake boating accesses, and filling in between residents on some roads.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $114,538.46. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:33 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Congratulation to eighth grader Isaac Johnson, our April Junior High Student of the Month! Isaac is the son of Josh and Bonnie Johnson.

Some of his hobbies include hunting, fishing, drums or band, farming, raising and selling chickens, helping with his parents’ meat locker and playing cards with family. Isaac plans to own his own business one day. He is continuously on the honor roll. Isaac has been active in football, basketball, baseball, band, and the fluid power challenge at Alexandria Tech. Isaac is consistently on the honor roll and likes

to work in the concession stand during games. He also volunteers to help clean up after sporting events. Isaac is active in church and helps out by working in the children’s church or serving in the kitchen. His favorite thing about school is participating in sports and band; he also enjoys hanging with friends.

Isaac’s advice to other students is “it’s good to find humor in things and you can always no matter what, improve yourself.

English teacher Chantelle Frie says “Isaac is a hard-working, curious, and diligent student. He loves to help in any way he can. Isaac helps around the school and in the classroom.
