despite the best of intentions. How you respond is what determines whether you can figure out what happened and move on, or put yourself in a negative downward spiral and surrender to failure.

Six helpful questions from Ruth and Gary Namie in “The Bully at Work: What You Can Do to Stop the Hurt and Reclaim Your Dignity on the Job,” can help you assess how you handle missteps at work.

• When you make an error or an oversight at work, do you criticize yourself harshly?

• Before important meetings, job interviews or work assignments, are your thoughts negative – do you focus on all that might go wrong?

• When you are running late, do you bombard yourself with harsh criticism, even before anyone else notices you are late?

• Do you worry you will be found out and others will discover you’re not really able to do what is expected of you?

• Do you lie awake criticizing yourself for anything that went wrong during the day, even though you didn’t have much control over what happened?

• Have you ever said or thought to yourself that you are your own worst enemy?

The Namies say that if you answer yes to even just one of these questions, then your inner critique is in overdrive.

An article in “Psychology Today” suggests that low self-esteem is a natural result of overactive self-criticism.

That leads to a variety of problems that usually result in failure: you stop taking risks to avoid making mistakes; you don’t express opinions in case you say something stupid or boring; and you compare yourself to others and are never satisfied with your achievements.

Then larger issues surface: you stop asking for help; you think about hurting yourself; you get defensive; and you can’t forgive yourself or others.

If you see yourself in any of these characteristics, you need to take action to reverse the negativity. Don’t waste one more minute demeaning your worth.

Remind yourself that you have plenty of valuable qualities that others depend on. Forgive yourself for mistakes, repeating, “If I knew then what I know now, I would have taken a different approach.”

List your accomplishments and refer to that list when you feel a pity party coming on. Take a break! A change of scenery can do wonders to lift your mood.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne 1961 Sometimes after a parent has passed on, the surviving children need to put the estate in order. There are sometimes large volumes of paper, which may include old receipts from financial transactions which occurred many years ago.

These transactions appear to be small or even silly to those who are cleaning up the estate. Some individuals, by keeping all of those receipts, have actually created a history of time and experiences from the past.

One of my readers was faced with the responsibility of getting rid of a bunch of papers his father had from 1961. Before destroying the receipts and records the son began to read some of the items. He soon began to become very interested in the information and put it into order by dates. He felt that the information would be of interest to my readers.

1961, for many of us, is not actually that long ago. In looking at the paper records, a picture begins to form of the end of farming with horses, the ending of a time when people made only one trip to town each week. This trip was to deliver eggs and cream to town and purchase of groceries or other needed items. The income from the eggs was frequently used for groceries and the cream check paid for other family or farm needs. The eggs were usually sold

at $.25 per dozen and cream was $23.80 per 100 weight. Several grocery receipts showed 20 to 22 items at a cost of less than $13.00. Butter sold for $.65 per pound. Three gallons of ice cream sold for $4.65. Oil installed at the service station was $.40 per quart. It was quite obvious that the family budget included much less money in 1961, when compared to today’s family budget.

Farmers purchased gasoline delivered in bulk to their farm tanks.

Gasoline prices included $.04 federal tax and $.05 for state tax. Since gas delivered to the farms was to be used exclusively for farm use, the gas taxes were refunded to the farmer. This left the cost of farm gas to be about $.12 per gallon. The farm gas was to be used exclusively for the farm, but there were times when the family car was filled at the tank. However this was only in the case of emergency or if the wife forgot to buy gas in town, whichever excuse was OK with the farmer’s conscience.

The prices for farm products were much less than today. Barley in 1961 was sold for $.48 per bushel, corn sold for $.56 per bushel and oats was $.32 per bushel. Fed beef sold for from $.23 to $.26 per 100 weight, cows were $12.00 per 100 weight. Fed hogs sold for $16.00 per 100 weight with sows at $13.50 per 100 weight and boars at $11.00 per 100 weight. Much less than today’s prices.

When filing taxes in 1961, you were able to reduce your tax by using dependent credit. The tax credit for a dependent child was $28.00 per child.

This amount was much less than the $1,000.00 credit of today.

aren’t going to listen anymore. Turn self-criticism around to self-correction.

Repeating a proactive message, like “we often learn as much from our failures as our successes,” is a great place to start.

A teacher challenged his class, “Raise your hand if you would like this $20 bill.” Predictably, all hands went up in the air.

He crumpled the cash into a little ball. “How about now? Who still wants it?” All the hands stayed up.

Next, he dropped the crumpled bill into a cup of coffee. “Any takers?” Not a hand went down.

The teacher fished the $20 bill out of the cup, dried it off, then dropped it on the floor and stepped on it. “Does anyone want this dirty old thing?”

The students waved their hands wildly.

“But why?” the teacher asked.

“Because it’s $20!” one student shouted out.

“That’s correct,” the teacher replied. “This bill retains its value even though it’s been put through all sorts of situations. That’s what I want each of you to remember.

“The circumstances you find yourselves in, the obstacles you overcome, and the failures you endure cannot diminish your value. Always remember how special you are, and

hold your head high so others will also recognize your value.”

Mackay’s Moral: Life is full of ups and downs. The trick is to keep getting up when you are down.

from today. An appendectomy today usually costs $7,900 or more and usually requires one day of hospitalization. An actual appendectomy in April of 1961 cost $151.50. This included $12.00 per day hospital stay for 5 days. Doctor office visits were from $4.00 to $7.00.

When one studies these old papers, they create a true picture of how things actually were. It brings back memories of a period of life that we probably don’t think about often. This time changed our lives and our thinking, even if we don’t realize it. They are a part of “us”, as are all the rest of our life’s experiences.

May 10, 2019: On May 14th, Deputy Paul Orvis responded to a vandalism call at Holdingford High School.

As part of the Ag Program, the school also operates a small greenhouse. The green house is covered with plastic. The vandal of vandals thought it would be fun to cut or puncture several holes into the plastic covering. The damage would have taken place some time between Friday, May 10th after school and Monday, May 13th. The damage to the plastic will cost the school about $700. The school does not have any suspects at this time. If you have any information on the culprits, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 320-251-4240.

Obituaries Sandra L. “Sandy” Kastanek

graduated high school from Our Lady of Peace in St. Paul, Minnesota. She continued her education in St. Paul at Miller Hospital for Nursing School as a LPN. On June 23, 1962, she married James Kastanek at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in St. Paul. She worked at Albany Community Hospital for 21 years and Master Mark in Albany for 18 years. Sandy enjoyed flowers, gardening, sewing, crafts, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family.

She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her husband, James Kastanek of Freeport; children, James Jr (Barb) Kastanek of Minnetrista, Jeffrey (Becky) Kastanek of South Haven, and Laura (Jeff) Nadeau of Esko; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Shannon, and David Kastanek, Kayla Stever, Liz and Kristina Kastanek, and Cody Nadeau; one great-grandson, Anson Stever; sisters, Connie (John) Thomas of Hugo and Shelley (Donald) Pazdernik of Scottsdale, Arizona; and brother, Michael (Kendell) Fischbach of West St. Paul.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Gina Marie Kastanek; and infant son, Anthony Kastanek.

S a n d r a L. “Sandy” Kastanek, age 77, of Freeport, passed away after a long illness on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Monday, June 3 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. concelebrating.

L l o y d “Dynamite” Hagstrom, passed away at the St. Cloud Hospital on May 8, 2019 at the age of 87.

He was born on May 24, 1931 in Upsala, MN. Lloyd had a bright smile, a quick laugh and a ready wit.

He would often entertain his family with stories from his boyhood days spent like a real Tom Sawyer hunting, fishing, swimming and getting up to hi-jinx around town. Lloyd was a Korean veteran and a long-time member of the Upsala American Legion. Upon ending his

Joseph S. “Joe” Kleinschmidt, Jr., age 87 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, May 21 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jim Maderak officiating. Interment was held in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Joseph Steven Kleinschmidt was born November 1, 1931 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Joseph, Sr. and Margaret (Laubach) Kleinschmidt. Joe served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1953. He was united in marriage to Jeanette Schurman on January 27, 1953 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Joe was the co-owner of Centre Jobbing in Sauk Centre and then became a custodian at Sauk Centre Public Schools, retiring in 1997.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853, American Legion Post 67, and the Bishop Busch Council #4863 Knights of Columbus. Joe enjoyed fishing,

Sylvester Kleinschmidt of Sauk Centre; sister, Cecile Zehrer of Sauk Centre; and sister-in-law, Trix Kleinschmidt of Sauk Centre.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Klick; son, Joel Kleinschmidt; brother, Ollie Kleinschmidt; and sisters, Anna Mae Pfeninger, Millie Vener, and Betty Lou Kleinschmidt.

Serving as casket bearers were Aaron Marthaler, Travis Marthaler, Adam Kleinschmidt, Luke Kleinschmidt, Brady Klick, Casey Klick, and Calvin Ilgen. Cross bearer was Karlee Rieland and scripture bearer was Anders Klick. Readers were Jennifer Klick and Karlee Rieland and the words of remembrance were read by Larry Kleinschmidt.

military service, he married his high school sweetheart, Louise Lange; they lived in Golden Valley for several years. They then purchased a grocery store in Long Prairie which they ran for a few years until, sadly, Louise passed away. Lloyd’s last career was as a rural mail carrier during which time he moved back to Upsala where he lived until it became necessary to move to an assisted living home in Holdingford. As a great nephew said, “Lloyd truly lived a life that reflected his nickname perfectly -Dynamite.”

Lloyd is survived by three sisters in law, Bernice Welters, Donna Lange and Yvonne Hagstrom, three cousins and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be held Tuesday May 28 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala.

Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the service at 1 p.m.

Mary A. “Mae” Wiechmann M

r y A. “Mae” Wiechmann age 93, of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Friday, May 17, 2019 at her home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday, May 22 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following the Mass.

Mary Agnes Niehaus was born April 30, 1926 at home on the family farm to Joseph and Agnes (Wessel) Niehaus. She attended the country school close to home and then graduated from Saint Francis High School in Little Falls, Minnesota. She worked at Kraft and then at the Produce in Melrose as a bookkeeper. On August 18, 1959, she was united in marriage to Lawrence “Larry” Wiechmann at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. They farmed and raised four children on the Wiechmann family farm northeast of Melrose. She loved to garden and grew and canned all the vegetables for the whole year. She was also known for her climbing rose bushes and loved gladiolas and begonias. She was a good seamstress and sewed much of the family’s clothes.

After retiring from farming in 1990, Mae and Larry built a home in Melrose.

She joined a couple of card clubs which she enjoyed very much, and continued gardening and canning. Just a week ago, she was talking about getting the garden tilled so she could plant her pickles.

Mae enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, canning (especially pickles!), cards, going to the Niehaus family cabin on Big Birch Lake, and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren.

Mae was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Women, Mission Society, and SchanhaarOtte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie, MN for Ronald Decker who passed away Thursday at the Bethany on the Lake Home in Alexandria MN. The Rev. Omar Guanchez officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery.

Ronald was born April 14, 1936 in Mankato to Harry & Mary (Korteum) Decker.

He served his country in the United States Army. He married Dixie Rausch on April 12, 1958 in Sterling, IL. While in Sterling IL, he worked in a steel mill and helped out with his brother-in-law’s family business.

In 1961, Ron decided to move his family to Long Prairie, MN where he farmed for many years. While farming, he worked odd jobs driving truck and serving on the Reynolds Township Board. After he sold the farm, he worked for Long Prairie Fleet Supply until retiring in 2006.

Now, I love real estate. But it’s always a good idea to have your rental property near you. I wouldn’t buy a place in Florida if I lived in Washington, D.C., and there was a chance I could be re-assigned pretty much anywhere in the world. I’d just scrape the lot where the rental house was, sell it, and invest that cash along with the insurance money.

Long distance landlording is really tough. It’s stressful, and it adds an even bigger element of risk to the rental property equation. It’s not something I generally recommend. If it’s something you guys want to take a chance on, though, you’re certainly in the financial position to do it. Just remember to pay cash for the whole thing, and if possible, try to get a location where you’d both like to end up when your military careers are over.

It does not matter where we are or what we are doing. We are to offer our words and our work, our hearts and our habits to Him as gestures of love and adoration.

Worship is not something we do; it is the way we live. Worship is presenting all that we do as a sacrifice to Him.

Dear Motor Medics, I recently had to have a suspension part replaced on my vehicle and I went the cheap route and found one on the internet at half of the price that my local store was offering and at that cost I could not pass it up. Being so cheap and with the free shipping I figured it made sense. The warranty was six months but I figured they would not sell them if they all went bad and at that price I could by another one if it failed. I installed it myself and 1000 miles later was left stranded missing a wheel. The car was towed and they found the part I had was very cheaply produced. I tried to call the company but they have no phone and do not respond to my emails. Is there any way to know how good a part is when purchasing one from a source other than the vehicle manufacturer?

economy was much better than what I get at home. I noticed two things when I refueled the car. One the very high cost as compared to ours and two the very high-octane content. I typically use 87-90 octane at home but the lowest available overseas was 95 and with 5% ethanol it was 99. This seems really high. Does this have something to do with the better mileage and power and if so, why don’t we have it here in the states?

-Martin in Shelton Washington Dear Martin, Most people would not have noticed the octane rating, good eye. You are correct about the octanes effect on fuel economy and power. With higher octane fuel the engines can run higher compression and more timing without detonation equaling more power and efficiency. Therefore, a car with the same cubic inch engine overseas could get better mileage than its counterpart in the states. I can only speculate on the reasons we don’t see it here but would guess the price of the higher-octane fuel combined with emissions regulations probably play a part in it. Manufactures are continuously working on ways to increase power while using the same size engine and octane fuel available at American pumps today.

Burtrum City May 6, 2019 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7:00 pm on Monday May 6th, 2019

by Mayor Ron Strassburg. Those in attendance included; Ronald Strassburg, Carrie Wiechmann, Deb VanHavermaet, Mitchell Bruggenthies, Sharon Erickson, Kevin Rohde, Dustin Wiechmann, Seth Strassburg.

The meeting minutes from April 1st, 2019 were read and approved by a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies, seconded

by Kevin Rohde, upon vote motion was carried and the minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved by a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Kevin Rohde.

The City Council then discussed outstanding/routine bills and upon a motion made by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Sharon Erickson, the bills were paid.

Regarding old business, estimates from Tschida and Maciej were presented regarding the options and ways to help with flooding areas in town. There was a motion made to go with Maciej Constructions, first by Mitchell Bruggenthies, seconded by Kevin Rohde.

Next, in new business, Flags and flowers will need to be ordered soon for the city, prices will be noted at next meeting.

City wide clean up will be May 18th, 2019 from 9-11 at the Grey Eagle/Burtrum Lions Park.

Lawn mowing season is among us, motion made first by

Deb Strassburg, seconded by Sharon Erickson, that Seth Strassburg to continue mowing for the 2019 season.

The maintenance position was also voted to continue with Dustin Wiechmann for the 2019 season, vote motion first by Mitchell Bruggenthies, seconded by Kevin Rohde.

As there was no further topics to discuss the meeting was adjourned with a motion first made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Sharon Erickson, upon votes motion carried and the meeting was adjourned.

The next City Council Meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 3rd, 2019 at 7:00 pm at the Burtrum Town Hall.

Upsala Senior Center Update

By Marilyn Woldstad We had many great responses to the “Brainstorming” article concerning the Upsala Area Community Center that ran last week. I didn’t expect the heartfelt suggestions and questions, but then, this is Upsala!

We had a meeting on Monday and have decided to move forward with Step 1: We are going to see how an additional morning of breakfast would go over. Next week we will add a breakfast on Wednesday, May 29. This means breakfast will be served at the Upsala Area Community Center on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, from 7:00-10:00 a.m. until further notice.

For those who haven’t been there, we’re at 121 Main Street in Upsala.

We still want feedback and input, on any activity at the UACC. We are receiving suggestions and comments at the Upsala Area Community Center, at the Upsala Public Library, Facebook, or you can mail to PO Box 183, Upsala, MN 56384.

Walter C. Lodermeier Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at St. James Catholic Church in Jacobs Prairie, MN for Walter C. Lodermeier age 94, who died Tuesday at Mother of Mercy Senior Living in Albany. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 9:00-10:45 a.m. on Saturday, June 1st in the church.

Walter was born on September 10, 1924, in St. Joseph, MN to Louis and Clara O’Matry Schroeder. He married Geneva Stock on October 6, 1945. After Geneva’s death he married Lucille Kotschavar on October 8, 1996. Walter worked as a Loan Officer with

K a t h r y n Tabatt, 82, of Long Prairie, passed away on May 15, 2019.

Funeral services for Kathryn was held Monday, May 20, 2019 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie with Pastor Noah Wehrspann o f f i c i a t i n g .

Interment was held at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Kathryn was born March 31, 1937 in Raymond Township, Stearns County, to Fred & Wilhelmine (Lohmann) Wiegers. When she was four years old she and her family moved to Todd County. Kathryn went to District 31 and District 48 Country Schools.

She attended 6-8 grades at Trinity Lutheran School and later attended the Long Prairie High School. Kathryn was united in marriage

LeRoy Leo Kulzer

LeRoy L. Kulzer, age 88 of Albany died at his home, in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 21, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of LeRoy L. Kulzer, will be at 3:30 PM, Friday, May 24, 2019 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, MN. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM prior to the service at church in the gathering space.

Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

LeRoy was born May 4, 1931 in Greenwald to Bernard and Catherine (Caspers) Kulzer. He grew up in the Greenwald area, until he married Mildred E. Nordmann on August 8, 1959 in St. Martin. He was a well driller in Montana and Wyoming and also worked for the Blenker Hardware store in Albany. He and Mildred farmed together

Not a day went by without his family visiting their home. He also enjoyed visiting with family, friends, and neighbors by telephone.

LeRoy is survived by his wife Mildred, Albany, his eight children, Gary (Marcie) Kulzer, Albany; Barbara (Scoop) Peltz, St. Martin; Bernadette “Bernie” (Bruce) Stang, Paynesville; David (Denise) Kulzer, Albany; Carol (Rich) Symanietz, Albany; Robert (Deanna) Kulzer, Richmond; James (Mary) Kulzer, Albany; Joseph “Joe” (Debbie) Kulzer, Albany. Also surviving are his brother, Anthony Kulzer, Greenwald and sisters MaryAnn (Kulzer) Samuelson and ErmaLinda “Amy” (Kulzer) Patras both of Chicage, Ill. LeRoy is preceeded in death by his parents Bernard and Catherine Kulzer; brothers, Alois Kulzer and Nicholas Kulzer; sisters, Renee Mergen, Leona Zehrer, Monica Joaquim and a son-in-law Frederick “Fred” Peltz.

Highway 71 through Sauk Centre lanes close, resurfacing begins June 3 Motorists who travel Highway 71 between Interstate 94 and Fourth Street N in Sauk Centre will encounter road crews, heavy equipment and potential delays while segments of the road are reduced to a single lane beginning Monday, June 3.

The lane closures will occur from sunrise to sunset, up to seven days per week, while crews resurface the road. All lanes of Highway 71 in Sauk Centre will open by Monday, June 10.

Flaggers and a pilot car will allow alternating one-way traffic through each day’s work zone while crews complete their work. Motorists entering any Highway 71 work zone from an intersecting road or driveway must wait for the pilot car to pass, then follow it through the work zone.

She worked various jobs; Home Bakery, Lubbert’s Grocery and Donny’s Warehouse Bakery. Kathryns’s hobbies were gardening, sewing, mending and quilting, embroidering baby quilt tops and dish towels, playing cards and especially spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Kathryn is survived by her children: John (Barb) Tabatt of Browerville, Connie (John) Zinter of Long Prairie, Jacqueline (Jeff) Georges of Long Prairie, and Jerome (Brenda) Tabatt; grandsons: John and Jason Tabatt, Michael, Matthew, and Nathan Zinter, Beau Tabatt, Joshua, Jeremy and Justin Georges and Riley Tabatt; granddaughters, Paige and Brooke Tabatt, Sarah Becker, Carley Tabatt and Hope Wolfe; 24 great grandchildren and one on the way.

Kathryn is preceded in death by her parents; husband Walter June 6, 2011 and son Eugene Tabatt on May 31, 2018.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Sheep Hear His Voice – John 10:22-30 The Bible tells us that faith comes by hearing. So why do some people hear and believe while other people don’t?

When a person is explaining important matters it can be frustrating if people don’t listen. This happens with children a lot. Sharing one’s faith in Jesus can be as repetitive. This is eternal salvation, people need to get this but they don’t.

In my head it is so clear who Jesus is and why faith and following him is so important that it is hard to understand why everyone else doesn’t follow him.

It is tough to see family and friends hear Jesus and not believe in him. Why do some hear and believe while others don’t?

Jesus had a similar group around him at the Feast of Dedication. They believed in God and knew of the Messiah but they wanted to hear it straight up whether Jesus was the Christ or not.

I have always operated under the premise that if people were told about Jesus in a simple enough and straight forward enough way that eventually they would come to believe. It seems logical that getting followers of Jesus to understand the Gospel in its simplest form should help ignite their faith and help them live passionately for the Lord. But no matter how clearly stated, not everyone will understand.

Jesus is smarter than us and even though the Jews wanted him to explain plainly whether he was the messiah or not he didn’t. He had told them, he had explained it before and they didn’t believe. Did he explain it wrong, does he need another chance? No. He just tells them what he is there to do again. “I give them eternal life.” Sounds like the Messiah to me. Sounds simple enough to me, but why didn’t they believe? This is the mystery of the human nature and our bound will. Jesus can be preached and taught, the truth can be given and yet people don’t hear it.

Jesus tells us, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” As dumb sheep we follow but not always very well. Because of our foolishness, not following Jesus and not lis-

tening to him happens. You don’t have to be too bright to figure out that following Jesus means not following your own desires.

Faith and following Jesus is such a good test of the heart that sometimes God avoids using logic and common sense because they can confuse process.

Either you follow yourself or you follow God. Either you are his sheep or you are not. Believing and following Jesus is an individual interaction with God and the reality is that some believe and others don’t. Some want to follow their own heart while others hear and follow God’s.

We don’t need a slick and polished explanation of our faith we just need to keep telling people that Jesus saves, that Jesus is the Messiah and that he gives eternal life. Eventually other foolish people like us will hear his voice and follow him too. Pretty sure following the Good Shepherd “who won’t let anyone snatch them out of his hand” is a good idea. Jesus is the Messiah and his sheep hear his voice. Amen.

Upsala Student Reads 4 Million Words

Kira Poppenhagen, 6th grade student at Upsala Elementary, recently completed reading her 4 millionth word.

“I like to read,” she commented as she listed her favorite series for this year.

Poppenhagen has read books in the Eon series along with Ranger’s Apprentice and Brotherband Chronicles.

Upsala Elementary intermediate students have measured word count for a few years using the Accelerated Reader tools that count words in books read.

“We have had students read 3 million

words and one that read 3 and a half million,” explained Mindy Klowsowski, 6th grade instructor. “However, we have not had a 4 million word reader - until now!”

At strategic milestones, students receive rewards such as a medal or movie tickets. Klosowski needed an exciting reward this time. Kira decided on her own to ask for ice cream sundaes for the whole class. In keeping with her favorite genre, fantasy, sundaes are a dream come true!

May is Mental Health Month 2019 May is designated as Mental Health Month, and has been observed as such since 1949.
