Being humble is one way to greatness Of all the creatures that came to the watering hole, Frog was the only one that did not have a tail.

The other animals taunted him over it, making him feel inferior and ugly.

So Frog visited the Sun God and asked him for a tail. The Sun God granted Frog his wish on the condition that Frog watch over the Sun God’s special lagoon. Frog agreed.

Soon a terrible drought seized the area, and the Sun God’s lagoon was the only watering hole available for many miles. Creatures from all over the land came to Frog’s new home in need of water.

But Frog was very full of himself with his new long tail and his powerful position as keeper of the only watering hole. His sense of entitlement had mushroomed. And because he had never forgotten how the other creatures teased him, he turned away every animal from the lagoon without giving them so much as a sip.

After a while, word of Frog’s antics reached the Sun God, who decided to verify this behavior firsthand. He found Frog swishing through the water, gleefully flaunting his tail. As the Sun

God approached the water’s edge, he heard Frog shout, “Whoever you are, move along! This water is not for you!

This special lagoon is mine to do with as I please because I am the most beautiful of all creatures.”

Angered, the Sun God exiled Frog and cursed him for the rest of his days. Now, every spring Frog is born a tadpole with a long tail. As he grows, the tail shrinks until it disappears – to remind Frog that the only reward for spiteful and arrogant behavior is the loss of things one truly cherishes in life.

This folktale is all about staying humble, which can be hard to do in a culture that encourages competition and individuality. Ideally, we are expected to succeed and yet stay humble. That is easier said than done for some people.

Thomas J. Watson Jr., former chairman of IBM Corporation and Ambassador to Russia, said his father frequently used to say, “Everyone should take a step backwards every once in a while and watch himself walk by.”

Staying humble is an important virtue.

Even if you think you excel at something, there is probably someone who is better.

Remember that there are many things that you cannot do. Recognize and accept your limitations. And while we all have talents, everyone also has defects.

I remember when I was first starting out in business after college. I’ve always said, I thought I would start at the top and work my way up. I had chapped lips from

kissing the mirror too much. But did I learn quickly about being humble!

When people ask me now to describe myself in one word, that word is grateful.

I know that many people helped me along the way, from supportive parents to mentors and friends. Many people helped shape whom I have become. I wish I could take all the credit, but experience has taught me that my life would be markedly different without all that valuable support. Seeing what all those folks have contributed reminds me that I could never have managed alone.

Whenever I speak to corporate audiences I say… “Anyone who thinks he or she is indispensable should stick their finger in a bowl of water and notice the hole it leaves when they pull it out.” No one is irreplaceable no matter what they think.

Truly humble people also understand they need to avoid bragging, no matter what their talents or status. I’m all in favor of a healthy self-esteem, but you don’t need to continuously bring attention to your achievements.

That’s what humorist Will Rogers meant when he said, “Get someone else to blow your horn and the sound will carry twice as far.” I couldn’t agree more.

One of my favorite baseball players was Boston Red Sox Hall-of-Famer Carl Yastrzemski. As he approached hit number 3,000, reporters hounded him with questions. One reporter asked, “Aren’t you afraid of all this attention going to Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Memories (3) It was one of those perfect fall days.

Not only was the weather wonderful, but your Aunt and Uncle were coming over for a visit. After they arrived, the guys decided to go hunting and harvested one pheasant rooster, one rabbit and a couple of gray squirrels. When we arrived back at home, after the successful hunt, we laid the game on the porch and went into the house.

“Yuk, what stinks!?” The unusual sharp smell made us aware that there was a home permanent in progress. How could a lady subject herself to this process so that she can put some curls in her hair? I know that they can smell it too and that the smell takes 4 to 5 days to go away. The guys can go hunting for a couple of hours and come home happy, but to be happy ladies they needed to punish themselves with a permanent. Both of them can be completed in a couple of hours. I guess in this case the guys are the most lucky.

Thinking back to the time when many of us were approaching our adult years, we notice a big difference in how we socialized then, comparing to today’s youth. Socialization at that time usually included actually meeting someone or a group of individuals on an in-person basis.

A good Sunday Afternoon activity, (if there was no hay ready to be baled) consisted of stopping at a friend’s home to talk and share ideas. Do you recall the sock hops?

It actually was an opportunity to dance to modern music without your shoes on.

Everybody needed to take their shoes off, not only to help the dancers to better flow with the music, but also to avoid being stepped on by someone’s boots.

Saturday night usually offered the opportunity to do some old-time dancing at any one of the many dance halls in the area. Sometimes it was a dance celebrating someone’s birthday, anniversary or wedding. If the celebration was for someone you knew, you felt that by attending, you were offering your congratulation to the folks that were putting on the dance. Some

times the dance hall put on a dance for no special occasion so you just went because it was fun and you knew that maybe some of your friends would probably be there.

Since our communities were small, we usually knew half of the people there.

Another popular activity was to go roller skating either on Saturday afternoon or on a Tuesday evening.

Skating usually was well attended by people you knew, making it a really great pass time.

Most towns had a place for the young people to gather to get a hamburger or soda and play the nickel music machine.

Sometimes the kids would dance to their favorite song, but the management told them to sit, because his insurance wouldn’t allow dancing.

Sometimes there were gatherings held at someone’s farm. To accommodate the expected crowd, the gathering was in a shed or barn. There may be some music provided by a couple of individuals in the neighborhood that could play a musical instrument.

My Grandmother told of having a dance in the living room of their house.

The room was about 16 by 20, but in order to dance to the neighbor’s accordion, the men-folk carried the large wood stove out to the yard. I guess fun was had by all.

I think that as kids we were more socially connected and did many more activities which helped to grow our physical selves, than is being done today.

Seems that we all are trying to avoid physical activity. Yes, it now hurts to move, but some additional movement would really make us feel better.

I’m ready to move to Baby Step 3, and increase my emergency fund to cover three to six months of expenses. Now that I’m gaining control of my finances, the idea of leaving apartment life and owning a home is more appealing.

Should I consider a rent-to-own deal on a house when the time comes?

-Alex Dear Alex, I wouldn’t go that route. In rent-toown scenarios, you pay more in rent so that some of it will go toward the down payment if you buy the home. However, in most rent-to-own deals, the renter ends up not buying the home. The net result?

You paid more in rent, and you still don’t own a home!

In your situation, being a single guy with no kids, you’re better off to continue renting a while longer and save money like crazy. That way, you can look around, find something you really like, and make a big down payment. And make sure you get a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage, where the monthly payments are no more than 25 percent of your take home pay.

Would it better to wait until the new July 15 due date to pay taxes, and pay off other debt in the meantime, or go ahead and pay state and federal taxes now, and take care of our other debts with what we have leftover monthly?

-Erica Dear Erica, If you’re talking about back taxes, I’d say pay them now. You don’t want to play around with the IRS, because they can really mess you up if they decide they’re coming for you.

But if you’re talking about taxes for 2019, I’d go ahead and include them in your debt snowball. If you need to move them up in your debt snowball in order to pay them on time, that’s fine. Whatever you do, don’t pay them late. Sit down together, and lay out a game plan that includes paying your taxes—and all your other debts—on time!

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the April Senior High Student of the Month, junior Alex Bellefeuille.

Alex is the son of Kris and Molly Bellefeuille. Alex has many hobbies including playing football, baseball and video games.

He also enjoys building model airplanes, sketching and reading. He is unsure of where he wants to go to college but knows it will be a college that has an outstanding civil engineering program. He is also considering joining the military.

Alex stays busy with many school activities. He has participated in football and baseball since seventh grade, including lettering in football. He also participated in basketball from seventh grade through his sophomore year. Alex has served on student council since his freshman year. He is also an integral part of our Robotics team that has been up and running for the last two years, including lettering both years. Alex stays busy outside of school by participating in Boy Scouts since he was in first grade.

His achievements include being on the A Honor Roll multiple quarters, being selected All-State Academic for football and the Northern Minnesota Robotics Conference (NRMC) All-Academic Team and was nominated for the EXCEl Award. He also earned 2nd place in the Stearns Electric National Rural Electric Youth Tour. Alex’s favorite thing about school is the teachers as they try their best to help us with schoolwork. He advises other students to “Work hard and try new things.”

Many businesses were allowed to reopen Monday, May 18 after being closed since March 17 due to Covid-19. Bars, restaurants and beauty salon closures were extended until June 1. Kris Schiffler, owner of Shady’s Hometown Tavern in Albany announced plans to reopen on Monday, May 18 at noon. Many came to show support of his opening, but a restraining order filed by the State of Minnesota kept Shady’s from reopening.

LuVerne J. Hollenkamp

LuVerne J. Hollenkamp, age 87 of Melrose, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2020 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Grey Eagle. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date when

restrictions are lifted.

LuVerne Joseph Hollenkamp was born February 5, 1933 near Spaulding in Birchdale Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Edward and Elizabeth (Voss) Hollenkamp. He was united in marriage to Lucille Doege on June 15, 1954 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle, Minnesota. After their marriage, the couple resided in Milroy where he worked as a dairy farmer and then in St. Cloud where he was a taxicab driver while working at Franklin Manufacturing. In 1955, they purchased their farm in Melrose Township where they resided the rest of their lives.

LuVerne was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. He sang with the church choir for many years as well as with the Community Choir of Grey Eagle. He was an avid fisherman, catching many fish in the area lakes.

Survivors include his children, Eugene (Theresa) Hollenkamp of Sauk Rapids and Joyce (Robert) Hens of Melrose; 11 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one on the way in August; sister and brothers, Cathy (Virgil) Metzger of Melrose, Edward Jr. (Shirley) Hollenkamp of Roseville, and David “DJ” Hollenkamp of Princeton.

LuVerne was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Hollenkamp on December 29, 2016; parents; daughter, Janet “Cookie” Hollen-Weaver on September 21, 2008; grandson, Christopher Hollenkamp; and brother, Lawrence Hollenkamp.

Mary Jane Blenker

P r i v a t e services were held on Tuesday, May 19 for Mary Jane Blenker, age 97 of Albany. She died on Saturday, May 16 at the Assumption Home in Cold Spring.

Burial was in the Seven Dolors parish cemetery.

Mary Jane was born July 30, 1922 in St. Cloud to Norbert and Theresa (Lyton) Heimann. She grew up in St. Cloud and graduated from Cathedral High School and St. Cloud State University. She taught in Perham, Minneota and Albany, Minnesota.

She married Fred “Fritz” Blenker on August 3, 1948 in St Cloud. The couple lived in Albany. Mary Jane was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church; the American Legion Auxiliary; Christian Mother’s, Mother of Mercy Nursing Home Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary; Seven Dolors Senior Choir; Albany TOPS Club; Albany Hospital Auxiliary, Seven Dolors Funeral Choir.

Mary Jane is survived by her children, Steve (Deb) Blenker; Albany; Tim Blenker, Albany; Ruth (Jeff) Martin, Wisconsin Rapids, WI; Bob Blenker, Kalispell, Montana, five grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fred “Fritz” Blenker in 1985, and her brother, John Heimann.

Gene A. Bliese

Gene A. Bliese, 81 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

Gene Arthur Bliese was born on March 30, 1939, at home in Round Prairie, Minnesota, to Arthur and Esther (Kuehne) Bliese. His family moved to Swanville when he was a child where he grew up.

He was confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville in 1952. He graduated from Swanville High School in 1957. Gene married Peggy Gruber on November 5, 1961, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Circle Pines, MN. They lived in Circle Pines, where Gene worked for Centennial School District #12 as head custodian. They moved back to Swanville in 1978 where he started working with his brother doing construction and later on working at Larson Boats from 1988 until 2008, at which time he retired.

Gene was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, where he was a Trustee for many years. He was also on the board of the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls for many years.

Gene enjoyed bluegrass music, including bluegrass festivals, deer hunting, fishing, camping, puzzles, restoring his F12 Farmall, woodworking, gardening, and spending time with kids and grandkids.

Survivors include his loving wife, Peggy, of 58 years; children, Kirk (Joanne) Bliese of Alexandria, DeAnn (Darrel) Peterson of Swanville; grandchildren, Brooke (Joey) Johnson, Nathan (Chevela Kircher) Bliese, Sarah Bliese, Luke Bliese, Miranda (Steven) Vesely, and Trenton (Ally) Peterson. Three step-grandchildren, Cassandria (Ryan) Suhadolc, Zach (JoAnna Nelson) Farrell, Andrew (Brittany) Farrell; two great-grandsons, two more great grandbabies on the way; 7 stepgrandchildren; brother, Arthur (Shirley) Bliese, and many nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jason; sister, Rosella Koester, and his brother George Bliese.

Jerome Clarence Dingmann

J e r o m e (Jerry) Clarence Dingmann, age 76, passed away Friday, May 15th at Country Manor in Sartell, after a short battle with cancer. A celebration of life will be set at a later date.

Jerry was born May 19, 1943 to Joseph and Katherine (Jacobs) Dingmann in Melrose, MN. He worked at Elecrolux for 37 years before retiring in 2005. He married Mary (Honer) on May 4th, 2007 at their home, and resided there until his passing.

Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, driving his motorcycle, and spending time with his family.

Jerry is survived by his wife Mary; his daughter Selena (Ervin Jr.) Bueckers; Mary’s two sons, whom he always considered his own; Michael (Amy) Honer and Matthew (Janelle) Honer; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters; Renee Braegelmann, Janet (Claude) Yurczyk; JoAnn (Leon) Salzl; Ron (Judy); Harold (Jean); Eldred (Judy); Vern (Joyce); Duane (Ann); Arnie (Renee); and Joe (Mary).

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Ralph Braegelmann, and niece Jody Dingmann.

Michael Hoover

Michael Jay Hoover, age 45, fought bipolar disorder for many years but lost his battle to suicide on Saturday, May 16, 2020.

Mike was born in Appleton, Wisconsin on February 21, 1975 to Carol (Sorensen) and Jay Hoover.

He graduated from Appleton West High School and attended Lawrence University in Appleton where he majored in music and computer science.

Mike moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1997 to live near his mother and stepfather Carol and Ray Harbeck. He cofounded a technology company and worked as a computer programmer for several years.

Mike and his dog Maggie moved to Melrose, Minnesota in 2013 to live closer to his beloved sisters, Dina and Steph.

They were able to spend many holidays and birthdays together. Every year for his birthday they would go to his favorite burger joint, Matt’s Bar in Minneapolis.

Mike loved spending time with his siblings and their families.

Mike had a passion and talent for music that was inspiring. He was an accomplished tuba player and composer, and he taught himself how to play several other instruments. After he moved to Melrose, he joined several community bands, including the St. Cloud Municipal Band, Meire Grove Band, Wadena Community Band, Just For Fun Brass Quintet, Long Prairie Orchestra (where he was a Composer in Residence), and the Forever Young Choir. He composed many pieces of music, with some being played by the bands he was a member of.

A private Graveside Service was held Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Nora was born on February 11, 1922 in Culdrum Township, Morrison County, MN to the late Charles & Otteila Rahn. She was united in marriage to Richard R. Besemann on June 5, 1947 at the Culdrum Lutheran Church. The couple made their home out on the farm near Swanville.

Nora is survived by her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard in 1982; 3 brothers; 1 sister; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Rita Theresa Mettenburg Orville “Bud” C. Haan Rita Theresa Mettenburg, ag 93, passed away on May 15, 2020 at St. Benedicts Sr. Community hospice.

Rita was born on January 10, 1927 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, MN, the eighth of ten children born to Henry and Catherine (Euteneuer) Suek. She was raised in Freeport and Holdingford. She graduated from Holdingford High School, Class of 1945, and from St. Cloud Teachers College. She began teaching in one-room school houses in Stearns County with her teaching certificate in 1946. On August 26, 1948, she married LeRoy Mettenburg and they celebrated 50 years of marriage before he passed. Together they raised six children on St. Cloud’s southside.

Rita was a devoted wife and an amazing mother who would (and did) do everything she could for her children and grandchildren.

She was a great cook, baker and gardener, likely out of necessity. After her children were in school, she returned to the workforce, first as a teacher’s aide at Holy Spirit School and then to the Pan O’Gold bread store where she eventually became manager. She retired in 1992, again needed at home to spend time with and care for LeRoy. Rita enjoyed walking the latter part of her life, after she had raised her family and had more time. She strolled her neighborhood on the southside and later the grounds at St. Bens, during all seasons and up until the last days of her life.

Left to mourn her loss are her children Doris (Rob) of St. Cloud, Gerald (Jane) of San Antonio, Diane (Pat) of Inver Grove Heights, and Karl (Barb) of Apple Valley; her grandchildren Jennifer, Sarah(Peyton), Audrey (Garrett), Melissa (Aaron) and Connor; her great grandsons Fendall and Gideon; her sister-in-law Rosie Mettenburg; and many nieces and nephews.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy (1998), infant daughter Barbara Louise (1951), Gordon (2020) and Eileen (2010); her parents; all nine of her siblings and their spouses Lidwina (Harry) Buckwald, Zita or Sr. Engelbert OSB, Sylvester (Elsie), Alphonse (Lois), Leona (Frank, John) Traeger Achmann, Radegundis (George) Clear, Leander (Marietta), Henrietta (Ernie) Pribyl, and Innocent (Rita); her brother and sister in laws Arthur (Marie), Arnold, Esther (Joe) Matchinsky, and Roger (Dolores); and nieces Carolyn, Gayle and Carol, and nephew John.

While Rita did not have COVID-19, the isolation caused her much loneliness and confusion the past two months. She was of the Greatest Generation, which mobilized and worked hard to address challenges. Isolating was not in her nature.

Rita was a charter member of Holy Spirit Parish. A private funeral was held there on May 19, 2020 followed by interment at Assumption Cemetery.

Orville “ Bud” Charles Haan, age 95, Albany, MN, went to be with his Heavenly Savior on Monday, May 4, 2020 at Mother of Mercy Assisted Living, Albany, MN, with his sons by his side.

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Old Frontenac Cemetery, Frontenac, MN. Bud was born July 21, 1924 in Grand Rapids, MI to Charles and Anna (VanBelcom) Haan. He married Ruby Mae Leydens on October 7, 1949. Bud served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He taught science and math for 14 years in Grand Rapids, MI. After leaving Grand Rapids, MI Bud became Associate Professor of Industrial Education at University of Minnesota-Duluth followed by Curriculum Specialist for Suburban Anoka-Hennepin District and the Assistant Director at Red Wing Vocational Technical Institute. Bud enjoyed traveling in this great land of ours with family and in later years, friends.

Survivors include sons, Bruce (Beverly) Haan of St. Joseph, MN; and Craig (Sherri) Haan of Sturgeon Bay, WI; daughter, Pamela (Warren) Wolfe of Wesley Chapel, FL; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ruby in 1985, brother Eugene Haan and sister Ruth VanDoorne.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month Every May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and with the COVID-19 pandemic this year it’s even more important to take care of our own mental health and support those around us.

For many, the pandemic has meant worry about their health, their community, those most at risk and the future, as well as, financial and employment concerns while at the same time feeling isolated with social distancing keeping friends and families apart.

Minnesota Department of Health website has recognized challenges and added a variety of mental health resources on their COVID-19 response link. The page offers Minnesotans resources of where to call for safe, anonymous support and how to reach a crisis counselor in your area. Grey Eagle Memorial Day History

By Robert Kutter Memorial Day (formerly Decoration Day) was first celebrated in Grey Eagle in May of 1918, according to the Grey Eagle Gazette.

Ironically, that was the year of the well-known influenza pandemic.

For that first local celebration, people gathered at the Post Office at 10 a.m. and marched to Lakeview Cemetery about 1 ½ miles south of town for a memorial service.

This plan was followed for several years and then eventually there was a parade followed by a remembrance service first held at the Village Hall and later in the school gym before concluding at Lakeview Cemetery. That plan remained in place for decades until it evolved to the current practice which begins with a service at St. Joseph Cemetery followed by a parade down the main street and then a service at Lakeview Cemetery.

Every week before Memorial Day throughout the history of the paper, the Grey Eagle Gazette had a front-page story on Memorial Day plans. Local citizens were well informed about commemorating those who had

died in wars and those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Gazette was published from 1906 through 1976.

When the services were held at the Village Hall and later at the high school gym, there was a solemn reading of the names of every veteran who had died through the history of Grey Eagle beginning with the residents who served in the Civil War. Forty of the 41 who served in that war are buried in area cemeteries.

Decoration Day, as it was originally known, began in the years following the Civil War. Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971. For decades, the commemoration was held on May 30 until Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday of May. While there is no commemoration this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, flags will be placed on the gravesites of all veterans in the local cemeteries.

A quiet end to session, with some work in limbo After a long weekend with 14-hour sessions both Saturday and Sunday, the Minnesota Legislature adjourned a few minutes past midnight Monday morning. A collection of what I’d call smaller bills was passed during those sessions, but missing from the line-up of legislation approved by both chambers was a bonding bill and any type of tax bill.

It’s expected the governor will call legislators back to St. Paul in mid-June to extend his peacetime emergency, and work to pass a bonding bill will again take place at that time. The absence of tax legislation is troubling for farmers and other small businesses because they face tax liabilities from two years ago due to a change in federal law. of the Covid-19 situation. As a result, the projected state surplus disappeared and became a multi-billion dollar deficit.

There was a vote taken on a bonding bill Saturday, but because of its enormous size, it’s chances of passage were slim. Most bonding bills passed since I’ve served in the Legislature have carried price tags around $1 billion. This one came in at a hefty $2.5 billion and failed to secure passage in the House. What makes passing a bonding bill even more challenging is the fact it takes more than a simple majority to pass. A super majority of 60 percent is needed for passage, which means there must be support from both parties. I felt that with the state facing the need to make reductions in spending to balance its budget, this was not the time to take on that amount of additional debt. It’s my hope that we can work together next month to come up with a smaller bonding bill and get it passed.

Most businesses deemed “non-essential” will be allowed to open for in-store operations this week. Notably absent from that list are bars and restaurants, along with churches. A confrontation is shaping up in Albany where a bar owner has publicly stated he’s going to open for business, practicing social distancing. The Attorney General then said the bar owner would face fines up to $25,000 per location and per instance for every day he’s open without the governor’s approval. A Go-FundMe page was established over the weekend, and it quickly amassed over $173,000 in pledges to finance a legal challenge to the executive order. It’s estimated that the cost to carry this all the way to the state Supreme Court would be over $100,000.

Dear Motor Medics, I just got my first classic car, a 1958 Ford Fairlane and I have questions. I am wondering about some basic car care in the line of fluids. My 2018 Malibu is simple, just fill up the tank and go to the box store for oil changes but I have heard that you cannot do either on the classics. I plan to put about 2000 miles a year on this car. Should I worry about the battery staying charged?

-Ted in Attica, Indiana The 58 Fairlane is a beautiful car. Retractable hardtop, great lines, and a big V8 engine. Who could ask for more… You are correct about the fluids, they are specific. The engine oil today does not contain the zddp or zinc that older oil once did, and the newer cars have special bearings to compensate but yours will be damaged if you use standard oils. You need to either use an additive in the oil to replace the zddp and zinc or use a special oil formulated for classic engines. As for gas, you need to use a lead substitute if the engine has not had modifications made to run on no lead gas. Using regular no lead fuel can damage the engine over time. Along the lines of the battery you will find that when a car sits for extended periods it will tend to go dead. To get the longest life from it use a battery maintainer.

twice a day or more. It is very frustrating, and I do not feel secure anymore. When it will not start there is a picture of a key on the instrument panel and the engine just will not turn over. I know it is going to start ok when I turn the key on, and that light is off. I have had it to two different shops, and it starts for them so they both charged me $100 to look at it and said they cannot find anything. What can I do.

You go to a shop and they cannot find anything, but they charge you anyways. They charge for their time even if your car will not cooperate, but the question is, are they going the full distance or just turning the key and saying it starts ok. When we see one like this in our shop we verify the no crank and also go further by looking at basic electrical connections and vehicle computer data as well as looking to see if the vehicle has any recalls for the condition or past service bulletins.
