Explore your hidden talents -By Harvey Mackay Novelist Kurt Vonnegut Jr. learned a valuable lesson at age 15 that shaped his life and may shape yours.

According to a story in “Bits & Pieces,” he spent a month working on an archaeological dig. At lunch one day one of the archaeologists asked Vonnegut a bunch of questions to learn more about the young man. Vonnegut said he participated in theater, choir, enjoyed art and played the violin and piano.

The archaeologist was impressed, but Vonnegut then admitted that he wasn’t “any good at any of them.”

The archaeologist then gave Vonnegut the lesson that changed his life. He said: “I don’t think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think you’ve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.”

Vonnegut then admitted he went from someone who hadn’t been talented enough to excel at anything to someone who did things because he enjoyed them.

He said: “I had been raised in such

an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the myth of talent, that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could ‘win’ at them.”

Many of us have that mentality, and it prevents us from living up to our full potential. Consider this my permission to change your thinking and explore available options for new and exciting challenges.

As Henry Ford said, “Every experience is worth having.”

This may seem contradictory in our society, which is built on being the best, doing the best you can and focusing on your strengths. The subtitle of one of my books is “Do what you love and love what you do.”

That’s the bottom line.

So why not try as many things as you are able. You never know how you might enjoy an experience or when something might click. Never be afraid to take chances, try new things, make mistakes and learn from them and just have fun.

Unless you open yourself up to trying new things, you can’t find what you love.

In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take. It’s better to look back on life and say, “I can’t believe I did that,” rather than to look back and say: “I wish I did that.”

I had several sales jobs growing up, from having a paper route to working in a men’s clothing store to my first job out of college, being an envelope salesman. I knew I liked and enjoyed sales.

I also knew that I wanted to own my own factory and have people look up to me

as I walked the plant floor. My envelope manufacturing company is still thriving many decades later, but I didn’t put my name on the business until a couple years later when I knew I was going to succeed.

Throughout my life I’ve tried a variety of things. I’ve volunteered for many organizations, served on many for-profit and non-profit boards, joined various organizations and written about many subjects in my books and nationally syndicated column.

My passion for sports led me to try many adventures including running 10 marathons, scuba diving and snorkeling, biking, bowling, ping pong, golf, dance, trap shooting, fly fishing, tennis, just to name a few.

Make a list of new things that you would like to try. Continue to experience the euphoria of trying new things.

You have a lifetime of experiences to explore. Learn to play a musical instrument or a new language, visit a place you’ve always wanted to go, attend a sporting event, plant a garden or help an aging neighbor.

The opportunities are endless.

A father decided his daughter was old enough to learn about helping others, so he took her to help an older neighbor: raking the leaves, organizing his garage, putting the trash out and performing other small jobs around his house. The child had not really seen the elderly neighbor up close, but on this day she was going to meet him for the first time.

She asked him how old he was. The father was flabbergasted by his child’s question and attempted to apologize. The neighbor laughed and said that’s okay. The child is curious. He said he was 92 years old.

The child had a look of disbelief and asked the neighbor, “Did you start at number one?”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Noises

It started in the hen house when the birds were caught and carried by the legs, upside down to the chopping block. The sound caused a gathering of the farm cats and the dog, all of them knowing what was coming next. Cats would come running from the steer barn, the corn crib, behind the shed and possibly from my Uncle’s farm across the road. The gathering seemed to feel if they got close enough, they could get the first treat that the chopping block produced.

When the ax came down on the noisy neck, the sound stopped and there was a serious spread of blood, which since they were all gathered near-by, most of them had from sprinklings to serious coverings of red. The dog had attended the process primarily to avoid missing the excitement at the chopping block, but the cats were there to get something to eat. As a result there were several possession disagreements among the cats. Later that day, the cats could be found washing the mess from each other. The cats didn’t wash the dog, so he had to wait for rain. They then waited for the repeat of the process a few days later. The executioner usually spent the rest of the day with dark colored spots on his shoes and pants. No-one asked what the spots were, since it was just something that occurred on their farm too.

Although food produced on the farm required additional care that was not required with processed food, the food from the farm was usually more tasty. The time the family spent processing the food gave it a feeling of having been personally produced. It began being food starting at the first step in processing. We didn’t feel that physical labor was a punishment and the product produced was a personal reward for our efforts. It’s like making soup at home. It was started in the forenoon and you could smell the great odor all day and you couldn’t wait to sample it.

Many of you grew up on a farm. Part of the farm life was to make the residents of the farm as self-sufficient as possible.

Other than sugar, coffee, flour, chocolate and oatmeal, we pretty well supplied our dietary needs from the farm. We were taught to believe that whatever came from the farm was fresher, cleaner, better tasting and more healthy than foods from the grocery store.

When thinking about the old days, I had a thought about what sounds were easiest to recall from those days. For me, the sound of hand milking is one of the more pleasant sounds to recall. It started with an empty milk pail. The first few squirts actually made a singing sound when the milk hit the pail, followed by the muffled sound created by the pail being filled. Maybe that sound doesn’t come to your memory, but it is a sound that has disappeared on most farms. The next one is the screaming sound created by the pigs trying to defend their place at the trough from the other pigs. They acted like they hadn’t been fed since sometime last week.

The next sound that came to mind involved chickens. I think most farms had a flock of chickens to supply eggs and meat.

When the chicken no longer produced eggs, she became the main course for soup and Sunday dinners. There was a process that needed to be completed to change the live hen to eatable chicken. Butchering. And that usually created loud noises and in my mind, humorous consequences.

The Gerry Osendorf Scholarship Fund is being established to assist needy Melrose High School students to further their higher educational goals at a vocational school, 2 or 4 year college. Janet E. “Jan” Notch

Janet E. “Jan” Notch, age 76, of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, after a 20year battle with lymphoma cancer on Friday, May 14, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

M a s s of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, May 19 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Janet Elleanor Klasen was born November 12, 1944 in St. Rosa, Minnesota to Ben and Theresia (Engelmeyer) Klasen.

She graduated from Melrose High School in 1962. On June 6, 1964, she married Marvin Notch at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. After their marriage, the couple farmed north of Melrose until 2005 when they moved to town. Jan also worked at Ernie’s Family Foods for 24 years. During retirement, she volunteered her time being a foster grandparent at the Melrose Elementary School where she especially enjoyed working in the Kindergarten classrooms.

Oscar J. Rueckert

Oscar J. Rueckert, age 98 years, 10 months, 9 days, of Sauk Centre, passed away surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A private service was held on Monday, May 17 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rebecca Thomas officiating. Interment was held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Oscar Joseph Rueckert was born July 4, 1922 in West Union, Minnesota to Albert and Caroline Schostag Rueckert. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was honorably discharged on February 15, 1946. He was united in marriage to Arvilla Uphus on July 11, 1946 at St. Alexius Rectory in West Union, Minnesota and celebrated 64 years of marriage.

Oscar moved his family to Vernon Center, MN in 1949 for an opportunity to be a butter maker at the local creamery. When the creamery closed, he was out of a job, but his entrepreneurial spirit, vision, and hard work led him to own and operate the Vernon Center Locker Service which he later sold. He then set out to buy a Ralston Purina Dealership franchise, which turned into a thriving, profitable dealership. Oscar set up test sites for feeding cattle, hogs and even baby chicks to show farmers the value of feeding Purina Chows. He employed multiple employees over the years and maintained friendships up until his death. He was recognized by Purina for his sterling character and leadership and won multiple travel awards.

Upon retiring in 1979, Oscar and Arvilla moved back to Sauk Centre where Oscar worked the family farm in West Union until selling it in 1986. At the age of 75, he decided he wanted a part time job and enjoyed driving truck, making deliveries for ConAgra for 5

She enjoyed playing cards and was a wicked cribbage and carbles player winning 90% of the time. Jan was involved in a Bible study group and also enjoyed watching her grandkids’ high school activities. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include her husband, Marvin Notch of Melrose; children, Neil (Kelly) Notch of Melrose, Kevin Notch of St. Cloud, Tom (Lori) Notch of Sauk Centre, and Jean (Ben) Sakry of Melrose; 11 grandchildren, Nathan, Jordan, Abby, Ryan, Samantha, Morgan, and Chloe Notch, and Sam, Grace, Max, and Beatrice Sakry; sister, Millie Beuning of Key Stone Heights, Florida; and sisters-in-law, Margaret Klasen of Sauk Centre and Alice Klasen of Melrose.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Theresia Klasen; brothers, John and Richard Klasen; sisters, Irene Kerfeld and Lorraine Wenker; brothers-in-law, Norb Kerfeld, Ray Wenker, and Virgil Beuning.

Serving as casket bearers were Nathan, Jordan, Abby, Ryan, Sam, Chloe, and Morgan Notch, and Sam and Grace Sakry. Cross bearer was Max Sakry and scripture bearer was Beatrice Sakry. Readers were Bob Brickweg and Keith Kerfeld. Honorary bearers were Carol Klaphake, Dorothy Middendorf, Char Westendorf, Marge Haider, Bernie Rieland, Lou Bushman, Mary Ann Middendorf, Linda Klein, Peggy Stokman, and Marlene Reller.

Memorials are preferred.

After Arvilla’s death, Oscar spent 4 winters in the warmer climate of Bullhead City, AZ and Laughlin, NV. He enjoyed playing slot machines and poker at the Riverside Casino.

He regularly played rummy and 500 at the Sauk Centre Senior Center and enjoyed the camaraderie of his card playing buddies.

Oscar was an avid hunter, fisherman, and MN Twins baseball fan. He loved a good polka. His travels took him to Europe, Hawaii, the western states and Alaska. Alaska was a favorite for salmon fishing. He never met a stranger, marveled at technology through the years and followed the news everyday of his life. He wanted the world to be a better place, always wanting to do his best and especially wanting to help others.

Oscar was a proud father to 4 daughters and will always be remembered as a loving, compassionate, generous father. His daughters always felt his key to longevity was his sharp mind and his hearty appetite right up to the end. He loved to eat! He faithfully ate 2 pieces of bacon everyday, along with fresh berries often blended up in a smoothie.

Oscar left us with these words of wisdom: “You come into this world helpless and you leave this world helpless. What does this mean? We all need each other!”

Survivors include his daughters, Jane (James) Scheurer, Judy McMeen, and Candy (Garry) Freeman, son-in-law Jim Merwin, eight grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren.

Oscar was preceded in death by his wife, Arvilla Rueckert on November 1,2010; parents, 12 brothers and sisters, daughter, Carol Rueckert on April 1, 2020; son-in-law, Kent McMeen on June 20, 2019, and grand daughter, Jennifer Lynn Scheurer.

Casket bearers were his 8 grandchildren: Jeff Scheurer, Justin Scheurer, Jeremy Scheurer, Jessica Scheurer, Buffy Hilton, Heather Cooke, Erik Freeman, and Kirsten Freeman.

Memorials may be made to the Sauk Centre American Legion Post 67 where Oscar was a member for 75 years.

A few hours before Oscar’s death he said, “ It’s been a great journey!”

Barbara Jean Schultz

she could. She loved to go shopping and to play Skip-Bo. She would crochet or color to relax. Barb cared deeply for a lot of people who considered her their second mom because she treated them as though they were her own. Above all else, Barb loved her children, grandchildren and fur-babies. She loved to spend time spoiling each of them. Barb was an amazing, strong and stubborn woman that was full of spunk. She will be dearly missed by many.

Survivors include her mother Marge Schultz of Madison, MN; daughter Trista (Tyler) Larson of Long Prairie; son Michael (Lisa Dolezal) Chenoweth of Springfield, MN; sisters Diane Chapman of Appleton, MN, Sherry (Dennis) Hines of Pillager, Lori Schultz and Bobbi Schultz both of Marshall, Missy Schultz of Sartell and brother Randy (Michelle) Schultz of Richfield; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father Erhardt Schultz and nephew Arlan Schultz.

Raymond R. Ostendorf

Ray enjoyed music, singing, casino, being outdoors, traveling in his RV and to Mexico, and mostly spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dar; son, Eric (Jennifer) and grandson Ryan; brother, Sylvester “Slim” (Donna); and sisters, Delores Kardell and Alice Perrin; and sistersin-law and brothers-in-law, Carol (Roman) Bertram, Bob (Julie) Mayers, Mark (Mary) Mayers, and Debra Rassier; and many nieces and nephews.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Robert & Gertrude; brother, John; sisters, Mary (Richard ”Dick”) Stackowski, Lila (Gene) Schlosser, Lillian (Gerald) Davis; and brothers-in-law, John Kardell and John Perrin.

Raymond R. “Ray” Ostendorf, age 78 of Melrose, just 17 days short of being 79, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.

Raymond Richard Ostendorf was born June 4, 1942 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Gertrude (Arnzen) & Robert Ostendorf. He was married to Darlene Mayers on June 18, 1987 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. He worked at Brown Boveri and Melrose Electric before he and his wife purchased Meyer Electric in June of 1990, which they owned and operated until retirement in December 2011.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the April Senior High Student of the Month, sophomore Lauren Miller. She is the daughter of Jeff and Renee Miller.

Lauren has a wide variety of interests, which include any and all sports, reading and hunting. She is very active in school, participating in volleyball, basketball and softball since 6th grade. She was in the school play this year and also is currently on Student Council also having served as a freshman. Lauren also was on the trap team as a freshman. She has garnered numerous awards including having been selected previously as a student of the month, athlete of the month and student of the year for the English, Music and Spanish departments.

Outside of school Lauren volunteers at Vacation Bible School during the summer, helps with SAB activities, donated her time and efforts at the Dollars for Scholars waffle feed, and has participated in a mission trip with her church youth group.

Activities Director Aaron Gapinski says, “Lauren Miller is an outstanding choice for the Swanville Student of the Month. Lauren is a dedicated student/athlete that takes tremendous pride in both parts, being a student and an athlete. The Upstage Players Board is hosting auditions for its 2021 summer community theatre production, “Crazy for You.” Auditions will be held in the auditorium at the Upsala High School on May 29 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. (Actors are allowed to leave after their audition instead of remaining the entire time.) Actors should reserve an audition timeslot on the Upstage Players website. If you have questions about the auditions, please feel free to email the director at mcimenski@isd485.org. Actors who do not reserve a slot will be inserted into the audition schedule when/if a timeslot is open.

Crazy for You offers roles for a variety of ages, from middle school to very wise. In order to be considered for a speaking role or be a featured dancer, actors must be able to be pre Auditioning actors 1) will perform one thirty-second segment from the approved list of songs from the show, 2) will dramatically interpret one of the one-minute monologues available on the Upstage Players website. It is not required for the monologue to be memorized. Be sure to wear clothing that allows for movement if you’d like to be considered for a role that requires dancing and be prepared for anything.

Crash: May 12, 2021: At 12:00 pm, was notified of a two-vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of County Road 11 and County Road 30 in Oak Township. This location is south of the city of Freeport.

Deputies arrived on scene and learned a 1999 Ford F-250 truck driven by Dale Winter, 56, of Melrose, was driving northbound on County Road 11 approaching the intersection with County Road 30 when a 2015 Volvo Semi pulling a trailer pulled out in front of him. The semi, driven by Randy Walls, 65, Minnetrista, was traveling eastbound on County Road 30.

Walls stopped for the stop sign at County Road 11 and proceeded into the intersection without seeing the truck causing the collision. Winter sustained injuries in the crash.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded and was assisted by Melrose Ambulance and Freeport Rescue at the scene.

In order to spend time with the furious Polly, Bobby disguises himself as Bela Zangler of Zangler’s Follies, and when the real Zangler arrives in town, chasing Tessie, his beloved dance captain, things really get “Crazy!” With a fastpaced and light-hearted script by Ludwig, and a collection of the most beloved tunes of George and Ira Gershwin, including the day-dreamy “Can’t Be Bothered Now”, the catchy, high-energy “Slap That Bass”, and the plaintive, romantic “Someone To Watch Over Me”, Crazy For You is a truly delightful homage to the beloved, optimistic musicals of the 1930s: a world of showgirls and cowboys, in which a city boy and a country girl reconcile their differences, fall in love, and save a theater, the old-fashioned way (Cohn-Eichner).

Rehearsals will be on Sundays from 3-5:30 p.m., and Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Upsala High School. A tentative rehearsal schedule is available at upstageplayers.org. This schedule is subject to shift (minimally) due to actor availability.

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the April Junior High student of the month, eighth grade student Lily Peterson. Lily is the daughter of Kim and Luke Peterson.

When she has time for herself, she enjoys sports and hanging out with friends. In the future she plans to go to college to become a teacher. Since sixth grade she has participated in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She was a student council member during her seventh-grade year. As a seventh-grade volleyball team member she won the award for most improved. She also volunteers for local sports activities.

Lily is a student that is consistently on the A Honor Roll. Her favorite thing about school is seeing her friends and learning life lessons. Her advice to other students is to “set high goals and work hard towards them every day.”

-George Dear George, You’re in pretty good shape financially, and you could probably pay off the rental property in a year or two. So really, it’s a matter of personal preference. I will say this; there’s nothing worse than being a landlord if you don’t want to be one.

It’s not a bad thing to feel that way.

Some folks have fun and enjoy landlording for a while, but then other things become more important. It’s your life and your feelings that matter at this point.

If you still enjoy dabbling in real estate and being a landlord, go for it. If the shine has worn off, get rid of the place. If the latter is the case, you’ll get the responsibility of being a landlord off your back and become debt-free all at the same time!

-Dave Dear Dave, I’ve been following your advice for about a year. I’m almost out of debt, and I live on a budget, but looking toward the future, it seems like it will be very difficult to save up for a down payment on a home. I live in Chicago, and property prices are very expensive. I have a friend in Georgia who suggested I buy a less expensive property there, then fix it up and flip it to make the money I would need for a down payment.

What do you think of this idea?

-Erik Dear Erik, When you take on the kind of work you’re talking about, you need to oversee what’s happening every step of the way.

You’re working out details, keeping an eye on the crew, and having to handle a dozen other issues tied to the project. Plus, you can’t just walk up to a house or see it online, buy it, and expect to come out ahead in the deal.

People who flip houses for a living professionally eyeball dozens, sometimes hundreds, of properties to buy just one. It’s not an easy way to make money, and it’s definitely not something I’d recommend doing from a distance. In short, I wouldn’t do it, Erik. Fixing and flipping properties is a hands-on business, and trying to do it from 700 miles away would be a nightmare.

Just keep on working the budget and save as much as you can. I’d consider getting a part-time job for a while to add to the down payment fund before I’d try to fix and flip a house that far away.

Dear Motor Medics, I have purchased my first camper and I am trying to get it ready for the road. It is a 40-foot fifth wheel toy hauler that weighs about 20k lbs. I have a 2017 Ram diesel truck that I use to pull my boat, but it does not have working trailer brakes. The dealer wants over 1k to repair the system. Can I install an aftermarket brake controller on the truck even though it came with a factory one? The ride home from the camper dealership was a little scary without camper brakes and I do not want to pull to far without them.

We have many calls and emails from people wanting more power out of their truck so they can overpull which is never a good idea. The second most answered question is getting the trailer to stop. Trailer brakes are required for large campers most everywhere by law loaded or unloaded. Many trucks are now coming equipped with factory installed

brake control units but when they fail the cost can be outrageous. We have seen many aftermarket brake controls installed and the factory one bypassed either due to failure or personal choice. Ask your local trailer dealer to recommend one to fit your needs. If you are not comfortable installing and testing one ask them to install it.

-Take care, The Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My 2008 GMC Acadia seems to be having a transmission issue. When I drive it for short trips such as 3 miles or less it works fine, but if I drive over 3 it starts to act up.

The transmission will jerk extremely hard as it shifts and sometimes when I stop it seems to go into neutral then bangs into gear. The dealer replaced it at no charge under extended warranty once, but now it’s out again and they want $3800 to replace it. Is there any Upsala, MN

cheap fix I can do to get it going again?

-Mike in Bloomington, Illinois The short answer is no, there is not a cheap fix for this one. We have replaced over a hundred of this model’s transmission in our own shop and yes, they are expensive if you go with a new dealership part. There are alternatives though and if you like your dealership they may even be able to offer you one of them. Many aftermarket companies build great transmissions with 3yr 100k mile warranties and there are used transmissions from parts sources like car-part.com who can help you source a certified used part with a warranty. We have seen used units as low as $2k installed. While still expensive, it is a far cry from $3800. The other option for you may be having yours rebuilt.

The cost can greatly vary depending on how much is wrong with your unit.
