Last Thursday, May 12 was a wide-spread stormy day. The day started off with thunderstorms and hail in many areas ranging from pea to ping pong size. The storm front (pictured above) that moved in towards evening had high winds and heavy rain.

The will is as important as the skill -By Harvey Mackay Once a young man asked Socrates about the secret to success, so Socrates invited the young man to meet him at the river the next morning.

They walked hand-inhand into the water up to their necks when the Greek philosopher dunked the young man and held his head under water until he started to struggle.

When the young man surfaced, he took several deep breaths. Socrates asked him, “What did you desire most when you were under the water?”

“Air,” the man replied.

And Socrates said: “That’s the secret to success. When you desire something as bad as you wanted air, you will get it. There is no other secret.”

Nothing is more powerful than the power of desire. Napoleon Hill, one of my favorite authors, said: “Desire is the starting point of all achievement. Not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything.”

In his classic book, “Think and Grow Rich,” Hill provides a six-step formula that explains exactly how to achieve your desires, plus my input 1. Focus your attention on exactly what you want. With money, this means the exact amount of money you intend to bring into your life.

2. Determine exactly what you are prepared to offer in return for the thing you want.

3. Establish the exact date when you intend to have the thing you desire in your possession.

4. Develop a clear plan for manifesting your desire and put this plan into action immediately.

5. Create a clear statement that includes the exact amount of money or whatever it is you want, the time when you intend to have it, what you are giving in exchange and your time and action plan for making it happen.

6. Read this written statement out loud two

times each day, as you go to bed in the evening and as you get up in the morning. And most importantly, act as if it is already yours when you read your statement. Visualize it, feel it and believe that you have already manifested the thing you desire.

Look up the word desire in your thesaurus and you’ll find synonyms like covet, hunger, craving, longing, want and yearning. Not only must you know what you want, but you must really want what you want, if you are to get what you want.

A coach or teacher can tell you what you need to do to accomplish something, but if the individual does not have a deep-down burning desire to achieve it, great success will not be attained. Desire must come from within. You either want it or you don’t.

To lack desire means to lack a key ingredient to success. Many a talented individual failed because they lacked desire.

Many victories have been snatched by the underdog because they wanted it more. So if you desire intensely and you act upon it, then everything stands within your reach.

Your ultimate desire must be based on reason. You won’t become the queen of England without the requisite family ties or the Super Bowl MVP when you can’t read the playbook.

Aspirations that are unrealistic get in the way of legitimate desires that are within your control.

Desire may start with a daydream, but it is so much more. The weeks, months or years of hard work may seem like a nightmare at times.

Roadblocks and failures will test your mettle.

Desire could be Sir James Dyson’s middle name. He failed more than 5,000 times over 15 years in developing a prototype for his best-

She worked tirelessly for nine years to get her first cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” published.

They didn’t give up because they all wanted something “as bad as air.” My advice: Take a breath and jump right in.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne

for use in the kitchen or water for drinking or clothes washing, there was a need for several 5 gallon pails of water each day, winter or summer, no matter how hot, cold or rainy it was outdoors. Those on the farm needed to carry water to the pigs, horses, chickens or the young stock that were living outside. At one time water was carried to the barn for the cows and calves, which require large amounts of water. The water needed to be pumped by a hand pump; More exercise!

When the cooking was done on the wood cook stove in the kitchen the daily job of splitting and carrying in wood created another not so pleasant job. The kitchen stove was started at about 5:00 AM, so mother could cook the breakfast. The warmth created in the winter months was welcome, because the heater stove in the living room probably had almost gone out by morning. However during the summer months the heat created by the cook stove made it almost impossible to spend time in the kitchen, especially during canning time.

When one remembers how much physical labor was needed to keep your life moving on a daily basis in earlier years, it is not hard to understand why the exercise locations had not yet appeared.

Modern plumbing and electricity have certainly made our lives easier, but have they made us more physically fit? No. But we have convinced ourselves that we really don't need all of that fitness, so we just relax and watch TV. Hmmm For feedback or story ideas, email Tom at tom@swanvilleinsurance.com.

Not so good old days

Recently I spent some time with one of my readers discussing a few of the things that were not so good in the Good Old Days. We discussed some of the difficulties we faced on a daily basis, due to the lack of indoor

plumbing.

One of the not so good things was the problem created by the lack of indoor plumbing. Some of the younger generation may have never had the opportunity to meet a pot, a potty, a slop bucket or whatever the family called the indoor pail with the expanded upper opening. The outward bent top opening was created as a comfort item.

There was usually one of these items on the main floor and another upstairs. It was frequently stored under the bed, along with newspapers or catalogs for cleanliness. For about 2 weeks each year, the catalogs were replaced with fruit wrappings, which were more comfortable.

These containers were usually dumped in the outhouse each day, rinsed at the well and placed back under the bed. An individual shared an unhappy experience of dumping the pot on the way down the stairway. The cleanup, which included getting the escaped contents out of the cracks in the stairs was not a pleasant job. Maybe late for school that day?

As I have mentioned in earlier stories, the man on the farm tried to avoid using the indoor pot by doing our business outside or in the barn. Somehow the outhouse was too cold to use in the winter. The guys usually used the barn. Imagine placing your bare bottom on a wooden saddle at 20 below zero. Today, the memory still makes the goose bumps appear.

Marcella C. Tabatt

Marcella C. Tabatt, age 80 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 11, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A visitation was held Sunday, May 15 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre M a r c e l l a Catherine Tabatt was born April 26, 1942 in Litchfield, Minnesota to Cyril and Barbara (Theis) Ficker. She grew up in Litchfield on the family farm with her 12 siblings. Marcella attended school until the eighth grade then joined the work force at the poultry factory in Litchfield. She was united in marriage to Alfred Tabatt on August 28, 1962 in Madelia, Minnesota and later divorced in 2004.

She lived a busy life raising eight children, growing large gardens, canning most everything she grew, baking bread and rolls nearly every day, and sewing many quilts. Marcella rejoined the work force at Jennie-O-Foods in Melrose and then retired.

She was a member of Kingdom HallJehovah’s Witness in Sauk Centre.

Survivors include her children, Sheila (David) Eke of Sauk Centre, Alfred (Lonna) Tabatt of Albany, Joe (Carol) Tabatt of Sauk Centre, Matthew (Denise) Tabatt of Gillette, Wyoming, Jim (Melodie) Tabatt of Melrose, Marcy (Craig) Dragseth of Melrose, Joan Tabatt of Sauk Centre, and Arnie Tabatt of Alexandria; grandchildren, Kyle (Gaby) Tabatt, LeAnna (Paul) Cline, Christopher (Kassidy) Tabatt, Spencer Eke, Kayla Bueckers, Mercedes Eke, Breanna Dragseth, Belle Tabatt, Kirsten Dragseth, and Brandon Dragseth; great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Tabatt, Ana Bueckers, Teagan Tabatt, Chloe Bueckers, Chase Tabatt, and Prairie Cline; siblings, Mary Jane Klosher, Eileen (Fay) Theel, Joe Ficker, Dick (Shar) Ficker, Delrose (Ed) Fuchs, Caroline Ficker, Alice Poshek, Roger (Sandy) Ficker, Conrad (Jane) Ficker, Pat (Tony) Gueningsman, Ken (Patty) Ficker.

Richard R. “Tubby” Herges, age 70 of Melrose, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, May 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Interment was in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in St. Rosa.

Richard Raymond Herges was born March 22, 1952 in Melrose, Minnesota to Eugene “Red” and Alma (Brickweg) Herges.

Tubby graduated from Melrose High School.

He worked at Jennie-O for over 20 years until his retirement. Tubby enjoyed fishing on Big Birch Lake and had a passion for flowers and gardening. He was wonderful storyteller and loved making maple syrup with his brother, Joe. Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Linda (Wayne) Engstrand of Chandler, Arizona, Randy (Suzy) Herges of Waconia, Ronald (Dee) Herges of Battle Creek, Michigan, Steve (Jeanette) Herges of Pelham, Alabama, brother-in-law, Paul Schneider of Perham, Joe Herges of Melrose, and Ann (Brad Klatt) Tschida of Melrose; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Tubby was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Mary Schneider on November 28, 2015.

Caroline M. (Rosenow) Kotz, age 90 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, May 18 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter officiating. Interment will be at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls at a later date.

Caroline Mae Rosenow was born January 31, 1932 at home in Round Prairie Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Ortwin and Catherine (Bower) Rosenow. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. She graduated from Grey Eagle High School with the Class of 1949. Caroline was united in marriage to Harry Kotz on May 10, 1952. The couple farmed for 40 years in Birchdale Township. While helping on the farm, Caroline was employed for 11 years at Munsingwear in Little Falls and spent 23 years employed by Kraft Foods in Melrose before retiring. In 1996, they sold the farm and moved to Long Prairie where they lived until September of 2021 before moving to Lake Shore Estate in Sauk Centre.

Caroline was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. She enjoyed playing Bingo, going to the casinos, and looking for some good deals at auction and garage sales.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Kotz of Sauk Centre; daughters, Stephanie Casey of Sauk Centre and Sandra (Michael) Stowe of Aitkin; five grandchildren, Dustin Lemke of Long Prairie, Derrick Lemke of Sauk Centre, Ashley (Isaac) Roering of Sauk Centre, Jason (April) Stowe of Cloquet, and Shane (Melissa) Stowe of St. Cloud; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Caroline was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert Rosenow; and sister, Barbara Francis.

Haley R. Janshen, age 20 of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 13, 2022 at her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Haley Rose Janshen was born March 8, 2002 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Jeffrey and Jody (Hill) Janshen. Haley worked as detailer at David Motors in Grey Eagle. She enjoyed going to rodeos, mud runs, demolition derbies, snowmobiling, and four-wheeling. Haley loved spending time with her son, Hunter, and hanging out with all her friends. Haley had a bubbly personality and always had a smile on her face.

She was always there for her family and friends and truly enjoyed helping people out.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce Ray Comfort (writer/evangelist) wrote a book a few years ago titled “Hell’s Best Kept Secret." Now if that doesn’t catch your attention. The main theme of the book is that Satan has convinced most people that they are pretty good people and that God grades on the curve. I remember in High School, one of my teachers graded on the curve, I loved it because I was not a very good student. The better every one else did, the better my grade was.

I am not the first one to say this, but it needs saying again. We are not good people, in fact Genesis 6:5 says “The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.” This was the generation that experienced the flood because God was sorry that He had created them. We live in the same sort of wickedness today, friends. Romans 3:23 says “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Ray Comfort wrote the book and Moses wrote down the events of the flood, and Paul wrote Romans…Why? And why am I taking time out of my day, hoping that someone will read this article and get told that they are wicked?

Listen to me… I have great news. The penalty for our sin is death, but Jesus came and paid that penalty. He does not just give us everlasting life though because God can-

not look at sin! We are filthy, but if we put our trust in the work Jesus did on the cross, then His blood washes our filthiness away.

We become clean, and acceptable in God’s sight. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,” Do you believe this? This is the gospel! Again, in Romans 10:9-11 “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

Dear Motor Medics, I’m about ready to start hauling my trailer for the season and will be using more than one vehicle. What kind of things should I be thinking about before heading out with a trailer?

-Mike in Decorah, Iowa Dear Mike, I’m glad that you’re thinking ahead. Too many people just assume the vehicle they have is ready just because it has a hitch on the back. The first place to start is to make sure what you are pulling can safely be towed without overloading your vehicle, once that it done a safety inspection is in order. All of the items that the vehicle needs to operate such as steering, brakes, cooling, etc. will now be done for two so if it can’t handle itself how will it handle towing? Have the vehicle raised on a hoist to check the suspension and brakes, replace worn parts for safety. Check the tires and make sure they are properly inflated and not cracked. Also check their load rating.

Check the condition of the hitch and light wiring and inspect your engine and transmission cooling systems. Dirt and debris should be rinsed away from the cores with low pressure water. If you do not have a transmission cooler ask your mechanic about one, it may save you from having a transmission replaced prematurely. Don’t forget to check the trailer for safety as well. Be sure to ask your mechanic about further towing preparations.

They just said it had a complete failure and that’s the way it is. They did not offer any maintenance advice. It is also important to service cabin air filters and have the condenser cleaned as needed. Any leaks in the system or overheating due to dirt can be catastrophic. These simple checks can help you avoid costly repairs.

Grey Eagle Township • May 2, 2022 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, Mike Rohe, and Erv Herdering.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: Mike made the motion to accept the April 4, 2022 minutes with the following corrections- Ray made the second to the March minutes and the new door to the back room will be on the west side. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for April. Claims list included claims 3676-3688 for a total of $5,531.66. Ray made the motion to pay the claims. Mike made the second.

All in favor. Motion carried. Mail included a P&Z letter and election materials, insurance coverage, a MAT training and a bid for ditch mowing. Ron had a survey request from the US Census Bureau and advertising from Minn. Signs. Ray had a flyer from Midwest Asphalt. Mary Ann presented a CD that was up for renewal. Mike made a motion to renew, Ron made the second. Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray stated the grader needs to do a better job, should be doing extra trip when pulling in the sides. Break up spots on 130 east, Ray will check with the crack filling company.

Weed meeting- most of discussion was about the Emerald Ash Bore and not to move fire wood out of the local area.

Mike made a motion to accept the list of projects from the road check as presented, Ray made the second. Motion carried.

Ron attended the City Council meeting to request a permit for the back room project and inquire about a new door and adding a floor drain.

Also, to hook up to natural gas.

BBL presented signage they would like to see placed at the access, no action taken at this time.

Ron attended the Township Association meeting in Clarissa and reported on several speakers who shared updates. These included the Todd County Sheriff, Public Works, Dist. 8, Broadband discussion and sales tax increases, and others.

Additional agenda item: Rustic Road paving was discussed, and possible use of ARPA money for printer with a scanner.

Public Comment: Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:10 pm.

John Call reported on the following maintenance items: 1. The bracket was fixed on the snow plow.

2. The tennis courts are in need of new nets.

3. The dock will go in as soon as weather allows.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the building permit application for Danielle Wolbeck to remove and replace the existing deck, with the new deck being 2 feet larger. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brad Johnson to approve the building permit application for Brian and Lori Hollenkamp to build a 24’x28’ addition on the west side of the house. A second was made

by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with member Brian Hollenkamp abstaining, and all other members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve a building permit application for Grey Eagle Township for the following items: remove block and put up wood wall and door on the west side of the building, eliminating the door on the north end of the building and making improvements to the front of the building without adding anything new. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Julio Botello was in attendance requesting to rent the baseball field every Saturday from the end of April to the end of August for three or four teams to play baseball. They would also need the use of the bathrooms and the pavilion. They will ensure that the area is clean when they leave each week and will contact the Clerk if there are any city functions that would interfere with their times.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to rent the ball field to the Botello family for a season fee of $200. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Dan Berscheid updated the council on the following Fire Department items: 1. The new recruits finished and passed the Fire Fighter I training.

The Council was presented with the Grey Eagle Relief Association By-Laws change requesting an increase in the yearly benefits. A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the increase of $1400 per year of service for the Relief Association. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, Mayor Joseph Arnzen abstained and all other members voted in favor, motion carried.

Jim Gohman was in attendance with some park projects the Lions Club would like the council to consider this season to include: new boards on the bleachers, a sandbox by the volleyball

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve change order #1 for the water meter project, which would change four commercial meters from a 2” meter to a 1 ½” meter. There would be no change in cost. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Bryan Bye informed the council that Riley Brothers will not hold their prices for paving the streets that were not included in the sewer project, so they cannot be change ordered in.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve payment to MBC Drainage for a portion of the Bitz drainage. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Highway 287 drainage tabled.

There were some punch list items given to Bryan Bye that need to be addressed as part of the sewer project.

Big issues remain in limbo as session nears finish line The legislative session is rapidly drawing to a close with this being the last full week of work in St. Paul.

There is sometimes talk of a special session to complete passage of major bills, but that likely won’t be the case this year because the two-year budget was set last year.

The large surplus in state coffers made this seem more like a regular budget-setting session, but the reality is that there is nothing that absolutely needs to be done.

Usually, a bonding bill is the top priority during the even-numbered, non-budget years, and negotiations pertaining to that bill are getting serious. There is always give-and-take as both sides of the aisle promote projects in their respective members’ districts. The bonding bill is unique in that a super majority of 90 votes is needed for passage in the House, which gives the minority party some “say” in how the bill is put together. Numbers being mentioned as to the size of the bill are in the neighborhood of $1.4 billion. As usual in a bonding year, the dollar amount of requests from members far out-weighs that total.

Work in both chambers on major bills (additional spending because of the surplus) was wrapped up last week. Now, conference committees are in the process of attempting to reach agreement on the large spending differences in most of those bills. For the most part, spending contained in House bills far outweighs that which is in Senate versions.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the payment of claims #2394-#2418 for a total of $20,281.26 and to include the payment of the following additional items: $50 to Cans R Us, $225 to Eagle Fabricating and $412.41 to Terrain Aesthetics. An example is the drought relief bill passed many weeks ago in both chambers. The House version contains an additional spending item for the DNR for tree planting that is not contained in the Senate bill. That one item has pretty much stalled agreement on getting financial relief to farmers affected by last year’s dry weather.

Speaking of the weather, this spring has seen nearly a complete opposite from last year’s drought. After a cold and damp April, large parts of the state were hit with multiple storms this past week, saturating fields and causing massive power outages. Our farm received more rain from Sunday through Thursday of last week – nearly 5 inches – than we had during the entire growing season last year.

Others received even more. Reports from the St. Martin and New London areas had upwards of 7 inches falling on Thursday alone!

Alert calls from the sheriff’s department that afternoon warned of winds up to 100 miles per hour in the storm heading our way. It hit with a vengeance, with straight line winds and rain blowing sideways. Many folks reported trees down, with pine trees seeming to be the main casualty. Grain bins were destroyed, as were many sheds and buildings on farms in a large area. Tornadoes were thought to be the cause of buildings going down in the Lowry and Sauk Centre areas.

Power outages were widespread, with the area roughly from Chokio on the west to Villard and points east being without power. In fact, as of Sunday night, some rural customers still didn’t have power restored. It reminds us, once again, how much our society depends on electricity. We drove into town the evening of the storm and it was eerily dark, with no street lights on, and everything closed, even the convenience stores and the Dairy Queen.
