Optimists see opportunities in challenges -By Harvey Mackay Two hikers were camped out overnight in the mountains. A thunderous voice roused them from their sleep.

The voice said, “This will be the saddest day or the happiest day of your lives,” then instructed them to pack up their belongings, make their way to the river, gather stones in their backpacks that they couldn’t look at until morning, and continue on their journey never to return to the river or the mountain again.

The hikers did as they were instructed and stumbled through the darkness to the river. They stuffed their packs with cold, wet stones and carefully

trekked down the rocky trails that would lead them away from the mountain.

Shortly after sunrise they reached a valley and decided to set up camp to rest for a while. But first, they pulled out their packs to examine the stones they’d collected from the river. To their surprise, what they’d thought were river rocks were actually diamonds and rare gems. Both hikers sat in silence, overwhelmed by the bounty before them.

The first hiker said, “Now I know why this is the saddest day of our lives.

We should’ve gathered more stones.”

“You must be kidding!” the second hiker said. “This is the happiest day of my life. Look at the wealth we attained by simply taking advantage of an opportunity that was offered to us.”

Therein lies the perfect example of what Winston Churchill meant when he said: “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”

Positive thinking alone may not ensure success, but it’s an important start. If you don’t believe in yourself, you’ll have a hard time persevering against the obstacles and setbacks you’re likely to encounter.

How you look at life can drastically affect how much you enjoy your life.

Optimists expect the best out of life.

Good news: It’s an attitude that can be

learned.

Optimism is based on these tenets: • Bad things happen in life, but they are temporary.

• Bad things in life are limited in scope.

• People have control over their environments.

Pessimism is based on these tenets: • Good things in life are temporary.

• Good things in life are limited in scope.

• People have no control over their environments.

According to conventional wisdom, optimists and pessimists are both right about the same number of times, but optimists get to enjoy their lives more.

Optimists help create some of the good they come to expect, so they are probably right more than not. And they don’t waste time worrying about what they’re not right about.

If you want to maintain the right attitude in the face of adversity, start by telling yourself you can change. Think of how you’ve changed throughout your life emotionally. You’re probably a different person today than you were five years ago, so don’t assume you can’t evolve further.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Saturday Night Drawings

Each Saturday night the local town merchants would hold a drawing.

Four names of the people in the community had their name drawn for cash prizes The prizes were probably $40.00 for 1st prize and the other three would get $20.00 or less. It seemed that everyone was there, primarily because you needed to be present to win and it was a great time for visiting. Some people would sit in their cars on main street and were able to observe and critique those walking on the street. Maybe share some gossip too.

The drawings were a needed boost for the local merchants. Since there were a lot of people in town, merchandise sales increased. The Saturday night purchases prevented the customer from going to the next town during

the following week to buy already purchased products. The restaurants and bars increased their sales, since most of the community population was already in town. Even small purchases created revenue which may not have existed if the Saturday Night Drawings hadn’t caused the people to come to town. It was a positive occasion for the entire community.

Times change. The drawings are no more. The drawings did not make or break the community, but they no longer exist and there are a lot of empty commercial buildings on main street of most small towns. Getting local shoppers to support their local merchants is a challenge.

By Debra Bellman I have been listening to a lot of Republican congressmen talk about healthcare. I didn’t keep track of who said what, but here’s what I’ve heard.

Lack of healthcare never killed anyone. Poor people don’t want medical care.

A lot of people, especially poor people, don’t follow a healthy lifestyle, and so, healthcare is wasted on them. That is, it is not cost-effective. Everyone should be self-sufficient. Government should not subsidize people.

People deserve to get what they are able to pay for, and nothing more. I promise you the health plan you deserve.

If you are sick, or have been, you deserve to pay a lot more for health insurance than a well person. It’s probably your own fault that you got sick. And if not, well, life isn’t fair.

You are not your brother’s keeper. nor is he yours. Grow up. Get a job (that pays well), or get two or three.

Our country cannot afford to make healthcare a right for everyone, nor do we want to.

In December of 1994, I arrived in Grey Eagle with depression, PTSD, and chronic anemia, all undiagnosed at the time. But I knew I was in trouble, and I remember hoping that this little town did indeed have a big heart, as the sign said.

Sometime in 1995, I could only see three possibilities for myself. I would become homeless. I would have a nervous breakdown. Or I would end my life. The first two choices scared me more than the third. The third choice left me resentful because I didn’t believe I deserved that.

I found myself in the office of a mental health practitioner. On my second visit, she offered me a fourth choice. She asked if I wanted to go on disability. I

was surprised that I would qualify for this. She said I would. And so, I happily and gratefully chose life, a life on welfare disability and Medicaid.

Medicaid allows a lot of our elderly people in nursing homes to survive, and allows a lot of people with disabilities more obvious than mine to survive.

The currently proposed healthcare laws would continue coverage for these people, at least to some degree. But people like the me of 1995, who look like they could or should be self-sufficient, might not be covered.

Maybe the first three choices are all that I deserved or should expect. I know a lot of people who think this way. Some are my own family members. Some are my neighbors. Every one of them is a Christian and a Republican. I try to love and accept these people. But I also love myself, and people who are like me.

I have a precondition, and I am no longer young. I would like to have a chance, now, to choose healthcare coverage that I can afford, which doesn’t have an unrealistically high deductible.

The truth is, I want this for everyone. If that means the richest Americans have to make do without a big reduction in their taxes, I can live with this. Really, I can.

Jesus loves the poor. And Jesus has always loved me. The government law which allowed me to live back in 1995, had kindness and mercy built into it.

Later, Obamacare allowed me to have healthcare that I could afford. The proposed new laws do not offer this. Surely, it is the older kind of laws that have Jesus’ blessing.

Agriculture students were honored at the Agriculture Department Awards Banquet which was held at Ridgewater College-Willmar Campus on Monday, April 3, 2017. Students received awards for their participation in state and national Postsecondary Agriculture Students (PAS) contests. The state PAS contests were held in Marshall, Minnesota in February and the national contests were held in St. Louis, Missouri in March. Students were also recognized at the banquet for other academic achievements.

Abigaile Lehner of Holdingford, the daughter of Jim and Tanny Lehner, received the following awards for state competition: 1st Place Employment

Art Show Reveals Area Student Talent The public now has a better understanding of what area art teachers have known all along: our students are loaded with artistic talents and

abilities.

Over 200 pieces large and small made up of colors bold and soft, uniquely textured fabrics, shiny metals, or re-purposed wood shared space on the tables, walls, and temporary display stands of the Centennial Auditorium Lobby, May 11-12, as part of the Freshwater/National Joint Powers Alliance® Student Art Show.

The annual show featured works from students grades 4-12 from Bertha-Hewitt, Browerville, Crosslake Community School, Pequot Lakes, Pillager, Pine River-Backus, Staples-Motley, Swanville, and Verndale school districts.

Submission categories included: crafts, digital art, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, pottery/ ceramics, print-making, and sculpture.

The top three pieces in each category received awards. Pieces that were near the top three in a category were distinguished with a Merit award.

Create the right environment.

Listen to music that uplifts you. Watch inspirational movies and shows. Read motivational books. Don’t spend too much time on downbeat material. Mix it up, with a leaning toward the positive.

Appreciate your life. Take some time to enjoy what you’ve already achieved with your life. Think about what you did to get where you are, and use that as a reminder of your capabilities.

Let go of mistakes. You’re bound to fail at some things. Learn what you can and move on instead of beating yourself up over and over.

In the autumn of 1994, animated film studio Pixar was in trouble. According to “Likeonomics” by Rohit Bhargava, Pixar was deep in the red, due in part because its upcoming movie “Toy Story” was way over budget. Microsoft had expressed interest in buying the company to gain access to some of its 3D graphic design software. The deal fell through, and Pixar’s prospects were

shaky in advance of the movie’s release.

That didn’t deter the team, though.

As they were putting the finishing touches on “Toy Story,” the filmmakers met for lunch to discuss possible new projects.

The three ideas they came up with? “A Bug’s Life,” “Monsters Inc.,” and “WALL-E,” all of which became blockbuster hits. Despite their financial uncertainty, the “creative types” retained their optimism about the future.

Obituaries Donald J. “Don” Tembreull Donald J. “Don” Tembreull, age 80 of Albany, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesday, May 17 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Scott Pogatchnik officiating and Rev. Isaiah Frederick, O.S.B and Rev. Vince Lieser concelebrating. A family inurnment will be held at a later date at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls. Military honors were provided by the Albany American Legion.

Donald John Tembreull was born November 27, 1936 in Fargo, North Dakota to John and Dorothee (LeFevre) Tembreull.

He graduated from Pierz Memorial High School in 1954 and served in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge in 1957. On July 18, 1959 he married Carol Seitz. Don worked as a mail carrier on trains prior to his graduation from St. Thomas University

Stephen Bieniek

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Stephen Bieniek, age 93 of Sartell, formerly of Holdingford, will be 12:00 Noon, Thursday, May 18 at the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwig in Holdingford. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Stephen died May 12 at the Country Manor Care Center in Sartell.

There will be a visitation after 11:00 AM, Thursday at the church in Holdingford.

Arrangements are being made by the MillerCarlin Funeral Homes.

Stephen was born December 16, 1923 in Holdingford to Joseph and Agnes (Nowak) Bieniek. He grew up in Holdingford served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during WWII from 1943-1945. He moved to St.

in 1965. After graduation, he worked as a bank examiner for the U.S. Government which eventually led him to his career as an IRS Agent until his retirement in 1980.

After retirement, Don served as a business administrator at several churches in the Twin Cities area.

Don was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and was a voracious reader. He was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous, the REC program, and also volunteered his time to many non-profit organizations. He lived “one day at a time” and believed that his calling was to help family and others in need. His sense of humor was “wicked,” a strong liberal to the end.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and one brother.

Paul. Stephen worked for the whirlpool Corporation for 49 years. He moved back to Holdingford and was a farmer. He was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwig.

Stephen is survived by his sister, Sr. Joelle Bieniek, OSF of Little Falls, and many nieces and nephews.

Gilbert W. Roerick, age 90 of St. Francis, died peacefully on Monday, May 15, 2017 at his home in Millwood To w n s h i p , Stearns County, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 19 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis with Rev. Jeremy Theis officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in St. Francis. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the St. Francis Men’s Society and Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the church.

Gilbert William Roerick was born March 7, 1927 in Grey Eagle Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Herman and Agnes (Tobroxen) Roerick. On September 27, 1955 he was united in marriage to Juanita Rohe at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Gilbert farmed north of Freeport in Grey Eagle Township until his retirement in 1995. Even after retirement, Gilbert helped out on the farm until 2015.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis where he sang in the church choir and served as Eucharistic Minister, St. Francis Men’s Society, and was a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Father Pierz Council #3628. Gilbert loved playing cards,

farming, but most of all, socializing with his friends and family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Juanita Roerick; children, Rosanne “Rosie” (Jerry) Wiechmann of Melrose, Kenneth Roerick (Julie Mrosla) of Albany, Roger (Diane) Roerick of Upsala, Janet Elfering of Alexandria, Joyce (Tim) Hawkins of Backus, Lois (Lee) Klasen of Inver Grove Heights, Gerald (Julie) Roerick of Burtrum, and Allen (Janelle) Roerick of Freeport; 17 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; sister-inlaw, Theresa Roerick; and many nieces and nephews.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, baby boy Roerick; brothers and sisters, Hubert Roerick, Alvina Beuning, Conrad Roerick, Henry Roerick, Louise Thell, and Edmund Roerick.

Serving as casket bearers will be Craig Roerick, Stephen Roerick, Ryan Elfering, Kyle Elfering, Hanna Hawkins, Tanner Thelen, Tristen Roerick, and Kassie Klasen. Cross bearer will be Carter Roerick and scripture bearer will be Kylie Roerick.

Honorary bearers will be Kristi Clark, Andrew Pohl-Thelen, and members of the St. Francis Men’s Society. Gift bearers will be Jared Roerick and Alex Roerick and servers will be Tyler Roerick and Mia Roerick.

Edmund “Eddie” Wehseler The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Edmund “Eddie” Wehseler, age 88 of Albany, will be 11:00 AM, Friday, May 19 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Eddie died unexpectedly Sunday at his home. There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM, Thursday and again after 10:00 AM, Friday at the Seven Dolors Church gathering space.

Seven Dolors parish prayers will be at 4:00 PM, Thursday at the church. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Eddie was born October 23, 1928 on the family farm he loved in Albany, where he spent his entire life living and working. He married Agnes Schleppenbach Neuwirth on January 5, 1973 in Albany. His retired years were filled with his new hobbies of bird watching, baseball games and driving his gator with his dog, bear. He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

Appolonia Wentland

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Appolonia Wentland, age 96 of Holdingford, was held at 10:30 AM, Monday, May 15 at Church of All Saints, St. Hedwig in Holdingford.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Appolonia died Wednesday at the Country Manor Care Center in Sartell.

Appolonia was born April 3, 1921 in Opole to Joseph and Constance (Warzecha) Pintok. She married Roman Wentland on November 12, 1945 in Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. The couple farmed north of Holdingford for many years. Appolonia was a homemaker who loved her family and enjoyed keeping in touch with her grandchildren. She was

a member of the St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church and the Rosary Sodality and she helped with faith formation classes and many other church activities.

Appolonia is survived by her children, Arnold (Jan) Wentland, Greenfield; Dennis (Marcia) Wentland, Holdingford; Laurice (Gene) Kostreba, Avon; Gerard (Marge) Wentland, Holdingford; Charlotte (Bill) Strei, Elk River; foster children, Mary Ann (Larry) Johnson, Weaverville CA; and Eddie Reh, Siren, WI. She is also survived by her brothers and sister, Emil (Marcella) Pintok, St. Cloud; Raymond (Bernie) Pintok, Opole, and Marcie Ann (Charlie) Cichon, Little Falls. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1991, an infant son, David, her brothers and sisters, Annette Marsolek, Rita Krych, Valeria Harlander, and Angie Nentl.

Apples recently said she wants everyone to know, “I loved life and I had fun!”

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My wife and I are looking at buying a new home.

We’ve been really blessed with our finances, and we’re at a point where we can pay cash for a new house and still have plenty of money in the bank.

Should we do this, or is it a better idea to get a mortgage for the tax deduction?

-Brian Dear Brian, I think the real question is this: Why wouldn’t you pay cash if you have the ability to do so? I would never advise someone to get, or keep, a mortgage just for the tax deduction, because these tax deductions are never 100 percent.

Let’s pretend you had a $200,000 mortgage at five percent interest. That would be $10,000 a year in interest. If you take a $10,000 tax deduction and you’re in a 25 percent tax bracket, that would save you 25 percent of $10,000 on your tax bill — or $2,500. So, you would never send $10,000 to your mortgage company just to avoid sending $2,500 to the IRS. You don’t keep a mortgage just for the tax deduction.

That’s trading a dollar for a quarter, and you don’t want to do that. Everybody thinks losing the tax deduction is an awful thing, but you could give $10,000 extra to your church — something you don’t have to be in debt to do — and get the same tax write-off.

There are numerous positive aspects to staying out of debt. One big thing it does is change your risk level. It gives you a level of peace and security you’ll never have when debt is hanging over your head. All that money that was going out the door to the bank can be used to build wealth and give like never before!

received a tax bill from the IRS for $30,000. I love her to death, but she’s extremely irresponsible with money and in debt up to her eyeballs. I know how you feel about debt, and I’ve tried to teach her how to handle money, but considering her situation — should I take out a home equity loan of $30,000 to help her?

-Toni Dear Toni, Absolutely not! Does that mean you don’t love her and care about her?

It does not. But you told me she won’t behave with money. You don’t give money to people who won’t behave with the stuff. That kind of behavior doesn’t help anyone, and it doesn’t fix the problem. It’s like giving a drunk a drink.

“Help” would be aiding this lady in changing her ways when it comes to finances. If you just give her a fish, it will stink and go bad. You have to teach her to fish. That attitude is not about being mean to her, it’s just where she is in her life. She needs to be educated, not enabled. And it doesn’t mean she’s a bad person, either. It just means you can’t endorse negative behavior or participate in her denial.

Keep trying to teach her, and pray for her. Make sure, too, that she’s in contact with the IRS about a payment plan. I know she’s your little sister, but you can’t fix this one for her. Sometimes the best help you can give someone is to help them change their behavior. That way, they will hopefully learn how to carry their own weight.

Seventeen Upsala Elementary students were awarded new books through Bookshelf Builders last week. Shelly Schumer, Upsala’s Reading Corps tutor, has worked with this group and handled the book award.

Reading Corps was awarded a grant from the Department of Education allowing the distribution of 140,000 books to 17,000 students in high need school districts and PreK sites throughout the national Reading Corps network.

To qualify, school districts need to be in a rural area and/or have a poverty rate of 25% or higher.

Through Bookshelf Builders, each participating K-3 student received a book to keep to help build their home libraries. To develop stronger connections to the school library and other literacy activities taking place within the school, the Media Specialist, Wanda Erickson, also received a set of books for the Cora Eckstrom Elementary Media Center.

Consumer Reports lists CentraCare Health-St. Cloud Hospital among best in nation for heart surgery

Consumer Reports released data today on the top hospitals for heart surgery in the United States. The ratings reflect how well hospitals performed on open heart surgery, including heart bypass and aortic valve replacement. CentraCare Health – St. Cloud Hospital earned “better than expected” ratings, the highest given, in both areas and is amongst an elite group, being the only hospital in Minnesota and one of only 17 hospitals nationwide to earn top scores in both categories.

Consumer Reports compiled the quality data for heart surgery from nearly 500 hospitals in partnership with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), considered to be the most authoritative source on cardiac surgery. STS collects data directly from hospitals on several key measures, including survival and complication rates.

CentraCare Health – St. Cloud has earned a top rating each of the five times Consumer Reports has reviewed heart surgery since 2010. Because of this consistent performance, Consumer Reports has referred to the program in St. Cloud as an “all-star heart surgery group.”

and his coaching staff made. He called it a leadership philosophy that had as much to do with core values, ideals, and principles as it did with blocking, tackling, and passing. It was a change in attitude.

Leading is teaching: Vince Lombardi was one of the finest leaders and winners in NFL history. As the coach of the tough 1960s Green Bay Packers, Lombardi also valued the cerebral parts of the game. “They call it coaching, but it is teaching,” he said. “You don’t just tell them [. . .], you show them the reasons.”

Compare that approach with the stereotypical loud-mouthed boss who treats his team members like four-year-olds in a daycare. Executing your assignments is necessary. But teaching the reasons behind a philosophy educates and empowers — both on and off the field.

Preparation: Tom Landry made the Dallas Cowboys into “America’s Team” during the 1970s. Landry was one of the first professional football coaches to hire a strength and conditioning coach. He was also the first to hire a quality-control coach to study game film and look for tendencies in opponents.

Now all NFL teams have specialty coaches. Landry famously said, “The will to prepare is more important than

Change is good: Following a few mediocre years at Alabama, some people wondered if Bear Bryant was cut out to be a coach. Then, in the early 1970s, Bryant shook things up by throwing the “wishbone” offense at the competition.

The rest is history; he led the Crimson Tide to eight SEC Championships and three national titles in a decade. Would most of us even know Bear Bryant’s name if he didn’t have the guts to make that change?

If something works really well, stick with it. But never be afraid to shoot the sacred cows within your organization. Doing something for no better reason than it’s always been done that way is the death knell for any organization. Sometimes a new direction, or an infusion of new ideas, is exactly what’s needed.

Patience is a virtue: It took Bobby Bowden nearly 30 years to win his first college football national championship in 1993. Between 1987 and 2000, his Florida State teams were dominant, never losing more than two games in a season. But what would’ve happened if Bowden had let 1976’s five-win season or a six-win campaign in 1981 get him down?

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson Budget is a work in progress during final week of session

We are down to the final days of session and, although we finished passing budget bills earlier than in past years, it’s still going to take additional negotiation to wrap things up. A Republican senator’s father became gravely ill last week and she left to be with family. The result was the one-vote majority in the Senate was no longer there, so they couldn’t pass the last of the conference reports. That is supposed to get done early this week, and Gov. Dayton will not have our complete set of budget bills until that happens. He has promised quick action on those bills, which means that all ten of our spending bills will be vetoed.

What’s missing at the time of this writing early Monday morning is a global or complete spending target that’s agreed to by the Legislature and the governor.

Until that happens, it’s difficult putting individual bills up for passage because the overall spending levels haven’t been agreed to. I think the key to having things fall into place is getting the tax bill done.

The reason is that any increased spending we agree to in other areas must come from a reduction in the level of cuts contained in that bill. And with those tax cuts still not agreed to, that must be done sooner rather than if an over-all agreement is to be reached.

A dust-up occurred last week concerning the usually non-controversial

agriculture bill. Fellow ag chair Rod Hamilton and I met with high-level administration folks, and we came up with the framework for an agreement. That didn’t last long as additional demands were forthcoming several days later, and the agreement fell apart. Someone on the governor’s staff then sent out a press release commenting on the bills we had sent him, and several points concerning agriculture were simply inaccurate.

All this took place the same day a coalition of 18 farm groups sent the governor a letter asking him to relent on his pledge not to negotiate further on buffer legislation. The list of those signing the letter was a who’s who in Minnesota agriculture, ranging from the corn and soybean growers to livestock groups, along with the Farmers Union and Farm Bureau. Gov. Dayton held a press conference later that day and was asked if he was waging war on agriculture. He called the charge “ridiculous” and said he represented all the people of Minnesota.

Hopefully, after a weekend of fishing in the St. Cloud area for the Governor’s Fishing Opener, we can move forward and come to an agreement on the state’s two-year spending plan. Adjournment is set by law for midnight on May 22, so we have eight days remaining to get it done.

I think we will come to an agreement and avert a shutdown, which would start on July 1 if the new budget is not in place.

The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:03 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Joan Olson, Brian Lange, Dennis Westrich, and Lana Bartells.

People present: Morrison County Record reporter Sheila McCoy, Public Works Superintendent Frank Koopmeiners, Garrett Doucette, Sheri Johnson via Skype, and City Clerk/ Treasurer Michelle Stevens via Skype.

ing at 10:30 a.m.

City Wide Garage Sale is set for May 19 & 20.

MMUA Training will be held in Upsala May 11 at 9:30 a.m., with a mock OSHA inspection to follow.

The Planning Commission reviewed the temporary parking issue in front of the post office.

Fireworks for Heritage Days will be at the Rec Building.

The UCDC are working to get a lawn garden tractor pull near the ball park and bus garage.

Recreation Board: Meeting was held April 25 Council directed Koopmeiners to change the locks on the outside doors.

The Council discussed the washout on the south side of the Rec Bldg.

Unfinished Business: S.E.H. – Request for Qualifications Westrich moved to grant the request for qualifications to S.E.H. Engineering for the future Sewer Lining Project, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Mount Olive Update: Online auction with Shultz Auctioneers May 22nd.

Borgstrom Street Project Billing: Council directed Stevens to bill the residents after the work has been completed with the numbers given by Engineer Scott Hedlund.

Maintenance Building: The Council will review the cost of building the new maintenance building at the special council meeting set on May 9, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.

New Business: Council directed Stevens to hire a wood finisher to refinish the council table before it gets moved to the new city hall location.

City Wide Clean Up – June 3rd Johnson and Robert Maciej volunteered to help at City Wide Cleanup Day.

What Does Buying Locally Mean These Days? - By John Young It might be hard to imagine, but at one time in the early 1900s, our small towns were booming retail centers! At one time in Grey Eagle you could attend a movie, could buy a new car, buy food from a number of grocery stores, buy major appliances from one of the hardware stores, and then visit one of the many gas stations before your trip back home.

One trip down the main street of any area town shows that those days are long gone. Small town businesses are struggling as the evolution of our buying habits and retail sales offerings move money from the local community to a more regional or national economy.

Many factors led to the demise of our small town businesses. Two that would be the largest contributors to our move to regional purchasing is the improvement of roadways and the reliability of motor vehicles.

Even as late as the early 1970s, trips of fifteen to twenty miles were still considered a long trip in Central Minnesota. Rough roads and older, unreliable vehicles made trips slower and often not worth the extra effort over buying something from the local store. Those barriers are no longer factors and we have moved our Buying Locally though to mean buying anywhere within 30 minutes of home.

Having some basic businesses in our small towns is very attractive and needed for the quality of life for residents in those communities. People looking to move into our area look at things like the ability to purchase some items locally as added value to living in our communities.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office May 10, 2017: At approximately 9:48 p.m., there was a report of a motorcycle accident with injuries on Great River Road north of Nature Road, east of Bowlus, MN. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the motorcycle, 48 year old Daniel Lemieur of Little Falls, MN was traveling south on Great River Rd. when a deer ran on the roadway. Lemieur hit the deer with his motorcycle which caused him to be thrown from the bike. Lemieur was transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the MN State Patrol, Bowlus Fire Department, Bowlus First Response Team and Gold Cross Ambulance.

May 10, 2017: At at approximately 5:26 p.m. they received a call of a 3-yearold child that was run over by a lawnmower at a residence on Great River Road in Swan River Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 32-year-old Alex Warzecha of Little Falls, MN was mowing the lawn with a zero-turn riding lawnmower and his 3-year-old son was riding on the back of the mower. The child fell off while the father was making a turn and was accidentally run over by the lawnmower while the PTO was engaged.

Cases rise of disease carried by raccoons that can infect dogs

Reports are on the rise of a disease in raccoons that can infect domestic dogs. Taking precautions can minimize chances of the disease spreading to pets.

The disease, called canine distemper, can be spread through the air or by direct contact with urine, feces, blood or saliva.

Cases have been confirmed in Olmsted and Yellow Medicine counties and sick raccoons also have been reported in Dodge, Winona and Kandiyohi counties, according to the Minnesota departments of natural resources (DNR) and health (MDH).

“Canine distemper virus does not affect humans,” said Dr. Joni Scheftel, state public health veterinarian at MDH. “However, distemper in animals can look like rabies, so it is important to stay away from sick wildlife.”

Pet owners should ensure dogs are current on vaccines. Pets should be kept away from sick or dead wildlife. Anyone unsure if their dogs are current on canine distemper vaccine should talk with their veterinarian about the vaccination status of their pets.

Some municipalities may have an animal control officer who can assist. The DNR and the MDH do not provide animal removal services.

“The canine distemper virus is found throughout the state and a few cases are reported every year, but there seems to be a rise in reports this year,” said Dr. Michelle Carstensen, wildlife health supervisor for DNR. Other states, including Tennessee, Virginia and Texas, also have reported increased cases of canine distemper virus in raccoons and foxes this year.

Canine distemper virus affects the central nervous system of mammals such as raccoons, foxes, wolves and skunks. Infected animals behave abnormally, losing their fear of humans, stumbling, shaking and can appear to be overly friendly. Other symptoms include sneezing, coughing and discharge from the eyes and nose.
