remorse at what he’s done. The father then comes out with his diary from many years ago, sits right next to his son and asks him to read it out loud. “Today my youngest son who just turned three was sitting with me in the park when a sparrow sat in front of us. My son asked me 21 times what it was, and I answered all 21 times … a sparrow. I hugged him every single time he asked the same question, without getting mad, feeling affection for my little boy.”

The son then puts the diary down and hugs and kisses his father.

Talk about a generation gap …

I love to study how the various generations view the world. And equally important, how the world views them.

Now a new group is coming of work age – Generation Z. Gen Zers, also referred to as the iGeneration, were born between 1995 and 2010, which means that the oldest are now entering the workforce.

We’ve heard a lot about millennials or Generation Y, people born in the early 1980s up until the mid-‘90s. Millennials are not children anymore: the oldest of them are now in their mid- to late 30s.

Millennials are increasingly taking leadership roles within organizations.

In addition to managing their peers, millennials will soon be managing Gen Z employees.

According to analysts at Goldman

Sachs, America’s youngest generation is nearly 70 million strong. This group will soon outnumber their millennial predecessors. Will millennial managers complain about Gen Zers as much as Baby Boomer managers complained about millennials? Only time will tell.

I like most of what I’ve read and experienced about many Gen Zers. Full disclosure: Most of my 11 grandchildren are part of that generation.

First off, they are more connected.

They grew up with the internet and have been connected since day one. They spend more time on their smartphones than any other generation, and use them for education and entertainment. They are more likely to browse the internet than go to a movie. They process information faster than any other generation.

But they also like to communicate face-to-face – a more personal approach.

They have both physical and online friends, and many are connected around the world.

Because Gen Zers live in a hightech world with constant updates, their attention span is shorter than millennials or other generations.

Gen Zers value ethics. They like companies that take a stand and are not politically correct. They are well Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Chicken and Veggies Some of us remember the time when there was a flock of laying hens on the farm. Many of these laying hen groups were allowed to roam freely around the buildings during daylight hours.

These free wanderings m u t u a l l y benefited the farmer and the chicken, since the hens found most of their food outdoors reducing the cost for feed, they ate the foods which they chose to satisfy their cravings. Their egg yokes became much more flavorful and darker colored. They were able to create dusting areas to help reduce their itching and bug irritations.

They also were able to exercise, especially if someone found an angle worm and another hen wanted to steal it. It simply created a happier flock.

Today, we sometimes refer to someone’s party or special occasion as a really big blowout. The origin of this description has never actually been discovered, but one possibility is that it came from a farmers chicken layer flock. On rare occasions, a hen would have a “blowout.” “Winner, winner, chicken Dinner.” One actually felt bad for the chicken, but the blowout took part of the chickens insides out of her body and the only possible solution for the chicken and the farm family, was to have a chicken dinner. The blowout usually was not near the Sunday Dinner, so it meant that there was a good possibility of a fresh chicken dinner in the middle of the week. Yum! This season creates an opportunity for us to satisfy some cravings that we have accumulated during the Winter months. I personally get a craving for rhubarb. The first harvest actually is more tender and sweet than later harvests. Less sugar is required to make the pies, sauces, cakes and bars less tart

and that is better for everybody. Rhubarb was referred to by some “Old Timers” as to be a spring tonic. I’m thinking that it, being quite rich in vitamin “C”, made the person feel better.

Several of my friends look forward to spring because of the wild treats which are now available in the woods.

They spoke of being sent out to find the free treats when they were kids. After a couple of directed excursions, they usually made a game of finding these goodies.

I’ll begin with the earliest wild treat. It is ramps, or wild onions or wild garlic, (whatever you want to call them.) They are plentiful early in early spring, growing in more moist areas of the woods. It is best to carry along some form of small shovel, since the bulb is located slightly under the surface. The early harvest is the tastiest and as the days progress the bulb becomes larger and stronger. They can be used frying potatoes etc., but my favorite way is to dab the end in salt while nipping them off.

The next appearance may be morel mushrooms. They sometimes appear in spring, but may appear at anytime during the summer. They are delicious fried in butter, but are a great substitute for the rather tasteless product we buy at the grocery store. Oyster mushrooms are common during the warm months and usually appear on dead, rotting basswood. Their white color and shelflike appearance make them easy to find.

They are also excellent substitutions for grocery-store mushrooms.

Fiddle-head ferns will soon be appearing. They are excellent in salads or can be slightly boiled as a buttered vegetable.

Wild asparagus is common along the road and railroad grades.

Immigrants from Holland found dandelion greens to be great as a salad or fixed with fried bacon, fried onions, scrambled eggs, vinegar and bacon grease to create something called a “wilt”. Now that is good eating.

They like to be individualistic, are more do-it-yourself, and prefer their own work spaces versus working together in a group collaboratively. They are used to having things personalized, from news reports to music playlists. They’ll pay more for products that highlight their individuality.

Members of Generation Z are more diverse than any other generation. They are good at multitasking. They are used to blending work and play, up to seven days a week. If they can log in and log out, they can work from anywhere, which is why the physical office is changing.

According to Wikipedia, Generation Z members self-identify as being loyal, compassionate, thoughtful, open-minded, responsible and determined. They view their millennial peers as competitive, spontaneous, adventuresome, all characteristics that they do not see readily in themselves.

Perhaps the characteristic I like most about Gen Zers is that they are resourceful and entrepreneurial. High percentages want to start their own business. A Gallup study found that

about 8 in 10 students in grades 5 through 12 want to be their own boss rather than work for someone else. They are willing to try something and fail.

Maybe Generation Z will help other generations step out of their box and see the world in a whole new way.

Mackay’s Moral: While you’re busy teaching the next generation how to do things, don’t be surprised if you learn a thing or two.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

Car Crash: May 10, 2019: At An Avon man walks away after crashing his vehicle into Lower Spunk Lake on Friday evening. Stearns County deputies responded to the crash in the 34000 block of County Road 9 in Avon Township.

According to Sheriff Steve Soyka, the 2012 Chevrolet Chrysler 200 left the roadway and entered the ditch hitting an approach. The Chrysler continued through a yard hitting a raised flower bed garden and down the hill into Lower Spunk Lake.

An Avon first responder and good Samaritans helped the driver out of the vehicle. The driver did not sustain any injuries.

A medical condition is believed to be the cause of the crash. Distracted driving or impaired driving were not contributing factors.

A tow truck removed the Chrysler from the lake.

Stearns deputies were assisted by Avon Fire and Rescue and Mayo Ambulance.

Obituaries Rose M. Johnson

Minneapolis and Rose began working at Roberts Hamilton as an executive receptionist until she retired in 1984. Rose and Forrest then moved to their lake home on Mound Lake. The couple were married for 67 years.

Rose enjoyed many activities, especially traveling all over the United States in their camper. She loved going to the casino, long car rides, going out to eat, and cats.

Survivors include many loving nieces and nephews.

Rose was preceded in death by husband, Forrest Johnson; parents; and sisters, Bertha (Len) Besnett, Martha (Verner) Swanson, and Theresia (Herman) Marty.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.

Rose M. Johnson, age 93, of Burtrum, died peacefully Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Getty Street Assisted Living in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A private family burial will be held at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in

Clotho, Minnesota.

Rose Mary Berens was born March 31, 1926 in Grey Eagle Township, Minnesota to John M. and Katie (Sindermann) Berens.

On October 6, 1951 she married Forrest E. Johnson in Long Prairie, Minnesota at the court house. The couple moved to

August F. Preusser, age 91 of Avon, MN passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2019. A Christian service was held Friday, May 10, 2019 at the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN. Pastor Allan Benson officiated. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, St. Cloud, MN. August was born on April 26, 1928 in Rockville, MN to the late Arnold and Catherine (Salber) Preusser. He attended school in Rockville and then St. Joseph, MN. August and his brother Ben, being adventurous spirits, moved to Nebraska for a while and worked on a ranch. August then served in the military for a short time before returning home and marrying the love of his life, Lorraine Vogel on November 8, 1951. In 1963, he purchased a farm in Avon, MN where he lived until his death. He had a strong work ethic all his life and worked many jobs including making butter in a creamery, unloading coal from train cars,

attending at a gas station, etc. He truly loved carpentry and farming the most but also fixing any and everything. He lived each day with zest completing many projects including building a wood shed last fall.

He would never say no to helping family or others. August lived his life based on Christian values, enjoying the important things such as the Bible, family and good conversation. He shared his infectious smile and hand shake with everyone and never left without saying “Keep up the Good Work”.

August is survived by his sons; Timothy (Lois), August Jr. (Joyce), Mark, Andrew, Sylvester and Dominic “Nick” (Kelly), eight grandchildren; Adam (Jenna), Jacob (Stacy), Sarah (Simon) Hansen, Matthew, Brian, Jordan, Kaitlin and Rachael, six great grandchildren; Nehemiah, Rebekka, Joshua, Luke, Abigail, and Everett, and one great grandbaby expected in May 2019, brother; Joseph (Dolores “Lori”), sister in-laws; Mary (Wally) Backes, Jane Palmersheim, and brother in-law; Louis Vogel.

He was preceded in death by his wife; Lorraine, brothers; Arnold, Bernard and Peter, sisters; Theresa Justin, Catherine Euteneuer, Anna Euteneuer, Margaret McCall and Sister Innocent (Agnes) Preusser, OSB.

Genevieve J. “Gennie” Lieser, age 90 of Spring Hill, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at the Belgrade Nursing Home in Belgrade, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, May 15 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Genevieve Julian Stalberger was born February 5, 1929 in Lake George Township, Minnesota to Math and Elizabeth (Haider) Stalberger. Gennie went to country school District 62 and graduated from Tech High School in St. Cloud in 1947. She was united in marriage to Florian “Bud” Lieser on May 11, 1948 at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill. The couple farmed in the Spring Hill area, retiring in 1988. During retirement, Gennie worked at H.E.I. in Sauk Centre and then at BugBee’s Resort at Lake Koronis in Paynesville as the housekeeping supervisor until 2009.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill, Christian Mothers, St. Mary’s Mission Society, and Lake Henry American Legion Auxiliary.

bowling, and enjoyed trying her luck at the casinos. She did much painting and varnishing as she helped to finish new homes. She loved to cook and bake bread, bars, and cookies. Gennie always had a big garden, many flowers, and a big lawn. In her spare time, she did much embroidery work by doing dish towel sets and pillowcases.

Survivors include her children, Kenneth (Shirley) Lieser of Paynseville, Judith (Tom) Stone of Minneapolis, Barbara Golz of Maplewood, and Jeffrey (Pam) Lieser of Belgrade; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Joan Winter of Glenwood City, Wisconsin and Bernice Welle of Spring Hill; and brother, Math Stalberger of Sartell.

Gennie was preceded in death by her husband, Florian “Bud” Lieser on June 14, 1999; parents; son, Samuel Lieser on April 14, 1969; grandson, Jon Kelley; greatgrandson, Adam Lieser; sisters, Lucille Utsch, Millie Spanier, and Betty Barten; and brothers, Cyril, Bob, and Ray Stalberger.

Serving as casket bearers were Chris Lieser, Rick Lieser, Jesse Kelley, Jeremiah Kelley, Dustin Golz, Ryan Lieser, Corey Lieser, and Jay Lieser. Cross bearer was Stephanie Mayers and scripture bearer was Jana Spanier. Gift bearers were Kari Deters, Lindsay Golz, and Anna Golz and readers were Shawn Mayers and Tim Deters. Honorary bearers were Lake Henry American Legion Auxiliary and the Christian Mothers.

Thomas G. “Tom” Spaeth Thomas G. “Tom” Spaeth, age 60, of Melrose, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 10, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Prayers will be said by Deacon Ernie Kociemba at 5:30 p.m.

James, “Jim”, was born on April 10, 1948 to Raymond and Dolores (Doege) Dols in Long Prairie. He graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1967. Shortly after, he joined the US Army. After serving in Vietnam, Jim returned to Minnesota. He lived in St.

an active member with the Melrose Fire Department for five years and for the last 30 years was working at Meadowlark Country Club in Melrose as course superintendent.

Tom was a great friend and co-worker to everyone and enjoyed hosting Christmas for his family.

Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Mark Spaeth of Big Spring, Texas, Brenda (Jeff) Zeis of Oak Grove, Cindy (Todd) Lenarz of Milaca, and Chris Spaeth of St. Paul; two nieces; six nephews; 22 great-nieces and nephews; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Elizabeth “Betty” Spaeth; and brother, John Spaeth.

Cloud where he worked in manufacturing for Franklin Manufacturing. Later he worked with his brother Don at Brown Bovari. While working at Fingerhut in St. Cloud he often drove home to farm with his dad and brother Bernie. He eventually moved back to Long Prairie and worked at Dan’s Prize for several years before retiring in 2013.

Jim will be remembered as a quiet, laid back man who loved to laugh and never complained about anything. He loved to dance, which is how he met his very special friend Linda Guse. He was a good father to his daughter Kimberly.

Survivors include his daughter, Kimberly Dols, Long Prairie; brothers Donald (Diane), Waite Park; Richard (Jan) Fridley; Tom (Linda) Enfeild, CT and Bernie Dols, St. Cloud; a very special friend Linda Guse, special people Richard (Stacey) Guse of Stanton TX and Carol (Lee) Anderson, Wright; he is also survived by many nephews, nieces He is preceded in death by his mother and father; niece Nancy Dols and nephew Aaron Dols.

Ralph L. Johnson

Ralph L. Johnson 95 year old resident of Upsala, went to be with his Lord on May 8, 2019 after a short illness.

Ralph passed away at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A Celebration of Life Service was held Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Word of Life Church in Upsala with Rev. Wayne Hjermstad officiating. Burial took place in the Gethsemane Lutheran Cemetery in Upsala, MN. Ralph was born October 28, 1923 to Elizabeth (Lizzie) and John Edwin (Ed) Johnson in Cokato, MN, at the home of his maternal grandparents N.N. and Anna Dokken. He was the eldest of 5 children raised on the farm two miles north of Upsala.

Ralph’s father died when he was 12 and he helped his mother Lizzie, continue farming and raising his brother and 3 sisters. He was baptized and confirmed at Gethsemane Lutheran Church. Ralph graduated from Upsala High School in 1941 and attended one year at Minneapolis Business College.

With the start of WWII, Ralph and friends from Upsala went to California to work in the Richmond-Kaiser shipyards, welding and painting ship bodies for the war effort.

He was enlisted into the U.S. Army infantry and served from 1945- 1947 and honorably discharged as Sergeant. Ralph married Margaret Catherine Bergren January 19, 1946 at Salem Lutheran in Minneapolis.

After his army discharge, Ralph and Margaret attended LBI (Lutheran Bible Institute) and then returned to the farm in Upsala. There he and Margaret raised seven children while farming, selling insurance, tax prep, lay minister and working as a paint foreman for Swanson-Youngdale.

Ralph was president of the Upsala Coop Telephone Company in 1968, when that small town went from wall crank phones to touch tone phones, the latest technology of that time and also pioneered the first fiber optics. He read his Bible daily, supported many mission causes and served for years with the Gideons International. Ralph was a member of Word of Life in Upsala and enjoyed family camp time at the ARC in Osceola, WI. Margaret died in July of 1995, just short of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Ralph married Virginia Helen Willis Miler (Ginny) on December 7, 1996 at Word of Life Lutheran Church. They were able to travel and spend several winters in Florida and were married 22 years.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Ginny, children; Sandra (Jim) Carlson of Staples, Karen (Fran) Koshenina of Upsala, Paul (Nancy) Johnson of Staples, Steven (Brenda) Johnson of Upsala, David (Suzanne) Johnson of Upsala, Ingrid (Stuart) Johnson of Upsala and Gretchen (Jon) Schaumann of Champlin; step-daughter, Connie (Randy) Shy of West Portsmouth, OH; his sisters, Mertha Flaten of Wayzata, Doris Dybing of Lanesboro, and Phyllis Norton of Enterprise, AL; 16 grandchildren and 7 step-grandchildren; total of 30 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-step-grandchildren, all to carry on his legacy of faith and love.

There’s shouldn’t be a “we” in terms of money at this point. You can always run a single budget that you both look at and prepare for after you’re married, but right now he shouldn’t be paying your bills and you shouldn’t be paying his bills.

The biggest problem I see is that he’s making no money. He needs to get a better job. He can’t pay his bills, and in the process, he’s sucking you dry. I’m sure your fiancé is a good, hard-working man, but he needs to make a serious career shift soon—like now!

In the meantime, this guy needs to take on a part-time job or two until he gets that career shifted. It’s not really a budgeting problem you’re looking at.

Dear Motor Medics, I recently witnessed a vehicle fire on the highway.

As I passed by in the far lane I could not even tell what kind of car it was because it was so intense. Even in the far lane I could feel the heat of the fire.

When I first saw the smoke I must have been about two miles away but saw no flames. As I got closer I started to see the fire bellowing from the car and by the time I passed as I said I could not even tell what kind of car it was. All this occurred in the period of less than two minutes. I was amazed how fast the fire spread. Are vehicle fires common and what should I do if my vehicle ever catches fire?

Think safety first, pull over and stop as fast as you can, as you witnessed vehicle fires spread extremely fast. Get the passengers out and move to safety.

If there is smoke coming from a closed compartment do not open it. The fresh air can cause a fast flare up. The many different materials in a vehicle will emit gasses when burning that can quickly overcome you so even if all you see is smoke stay away from it. If you try to recover objects from the vehicle you could be harmed. Call the authorities and stay far away.

or two miles per gallon would make a noticeable difference in cost. Is there one thing I can do that will save me fuel that does not cost more than the fuel I will save by doing it? I have not done anything to my vehicle other than oil changes and air filter and I now have about 40,000 miles on the van. I used to get about 28 mpg when new and now get about 24.

-Melanie in Fisher, West Virginia Dear Melanie, There are many things that could be contributing to your mpg loss but with only 40,000 miles you are probably in better shape than someone with many more. Spark plugs on newer vehicles usually will last more miles than you have before a major loss in mileage is noticed and you’ve had the air filter changed. Make sure the tires have proper pressure and if you have never had a professional fuel system cleaning having one done may gain a couple mpg in your case if all other tune up items are in good shape. As a vehicle builds up contaminants in the fuel system efficiency goes down and mileage suffers. A cleaning can restore the lost mpg and is affordable. Cleanings every one to two years is what’s recommended.

Upsala City May 6, 2019 The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall

by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, Dennis Westrich and Lana Bartells.

Absent: Crystal Benson People present: MC Record reporter Sheila McCoy, Mike Tschida, First Responder President Steve Hansen, Darlene Maciej, Public Works Frank Koopmeiners, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Lange moved to approve minutes from april 1, 2019 City Council meeting, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels.

Fire Department Report: The Fire Department presented their March minutes.

First Responders: The First Response Team minutes were presented. First Response Team President Steve Hansen stated the department will purchase two oxygen tanks at a cost of $198.00.

The First Response Team is having a picnic meal at the Rec Building after the Memorial Day Ceremony at the softball park.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the May Calendar.

Planning Commission: Lange updated the Council on what the Planning & Zoning Commissioners have been doing.

UCDC: Westrich shared the progress of Heritage Days which is set for August 9-11.

Recreation Board: Report was submitted.

Public Works Position: Lange moved to approve to hire Michael Tschida, and the hiring agreement that was presented, 2nd by Bartells.

Motion carried unanimously.

New Business: Board of Appeals and Equalization Meeting Johnson reviewed the minutes from the Board of Appeals and Equalization meeting held on April 22.

Crack Fill & Street Repair: Johnson discussed the crack fill and repair quotes for the street’s cracks and potholes. With the repair in the Uptown Alley and the repair on Olson Blvd, he estimates it will be a little over $23,000.00.

Bartells made a motion to repair the streets at a cost of no more than $25,000.00, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Certificate of Commendation: Johnson gave Koopmeiners a

Certificate of Commendation from Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for compliance and having all his reports completed and submitted on time.

City Office Intern: Stevens stated the City Office will be having a new intern, Kyle Bushaw. He will be working approximately two to three days a week until his allotted 640 hours have been used.

50th Street Dust Control: Westrich moved to approve Elmdale Township to apply dust control on 50th Avenue for ½ mile, 2nd by Batrtells. Motion carried with Johnson abstaining.

Heritage Days/ UCDC Responsibilities: The Council discussed how to separate Heritage Days Funds from the City’s UCDC funds. They also walked through the responsibilities of each group.

Lange moved to have the Heritage Days group separate from the City and be called the Upsala Heritage Days Committee, and directed them open their own checking account to manage the festival which will include a monthly treasurer’s report; the Upsala Community Development Commission will still be under the City’s financial umbrella -currently hosting the Christmas Lights Contest and the City Wide Garage Sale, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Acknowledgements: The Council sent out kudos to the Upsala Area High School Student Council and their advisor Aaron Fisher along with the First Response Team and the Fire Department for hosting the mock car crash. They brought in the Morrison County Sheriff’s Department, North Air helicopter, Gold Cross, the Minnesota State Highway Patrol, and Miller-Carlin Funeral Home to make the event very real and extremely pertinent now that it’s prom, and with graduation just around the corner.

Financials: Lange moved to approve the bills as presented, 2nd

by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the April 1, 2019 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes, Ray made the second. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for April.

Claims list included claims 33123322 for a total of $6,418.15. Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried. Mail included the advertising, P& Z letter, and a letter from District 8.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray spoke about the cracks in the roads, Breezy Drive and 341st, a motion was made by Mike and 2nd by Ray to have Midwest Asphalt do the repairs as they did a good job last year on crack filling. Motion carried. The weed meeting was mostly about hemp, palmer amarath and the ash borer issues. The larger crack on 130th E. will need to be filled. Ray will pick up more of the product he used last year.

Ray stated he was not getting all the calls for road issues and would like his phone number (320-533-1503) included in these minutes so that residents know who to call. Ray reported he had called the DNR forestry office about the dumping in the road ditch. No dumping is allowed. Not even leaves and brush.

The 2017 road project on 335th and Ascot was discussed and the many breakups that were occurring.

Ray will contact Knife River directly rather than the staff that was in charge when the road work was done. Some issues over who should pay for what repairs. Ray will get 2 bids in case the Township needs to pay for repairs so that the work can get approved and started soon.

Additional agenda item: Ray made a motion to have Hinman Lawn Service do the beach maintenance again this year. Mike made the 2nd. Motion carried.

Mileage report was completed at 31.85 miles. Ditch mowing ad will be sent to the papers and posted. Notice of Ash borer meeting in Sauk Centre.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:25 pm.

Grey Eagle Township

Todd County Road Construction Project

At the pre-construction meeting for this summer’s road construction work, the contractor (Central Specialties, Inc.) informed Todd County on their current proposed schedule of work around the Grey Eagle and Big/Little Birch Lake Area.

Here are the key points and schedule below but please remember this will change as does all construction projects. · Tree clearing has begun on County Road 19 and probably next week on County Road 47. The work will be completed under traffic with the appropriate lane closures for safety. This work will actually be completed by Kivisto West, who is a subcontractor to Central Specialties, Inc. You will probably notice that there are a few trees that are already marked along the road for removal.

· The replacement of the pipes on County Roads 19 & 47 will mostly likely begin around mid to late June. This work will require the road to be closed to thru traffic and a detour (see map above) will be set up to route traffic around the area. You may already notice a few flags in the ground to locate the location of underground utilities. · At this stage of the project it is too early to anticipate the time frame of the paving operation but we anticipate it to be completed sometime in late July or early August. MnDOT asks motorists, farm equipment operators to safely share the road during planting season Motorists traveling on Minnesota highways this spring should be aware of large farm equipment moving from farm to farm, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

“Planting season is ramping up across Minnesota and farmers need the highways to access their fields,” said Brian Sorenson, state traffic engineer.

“Motorists need to be prepared to encounter slow-moving farm vehicles, especially on rural, two-lane roads.”

According to the last three years of data, there were 386 crashes involving farm equipment in Minnesota resulting in 166 injuries and six deaths. Inattentive driving and speed were the biggest contributing factors in those crashes.

Farm equipment is large and heavy, making it hard for operators to accelerate, slow down and stop. The equipment also makes wide turns and sometimes crosses over the center line. In addition, farm vehicles can create large blind spots, making it difficult for operators to see approaching vehicles.

Motorists should: · Slow down and use caution when

approaching farm equipment · Watch for debris dropped by trucks.

It is safer to brake or drive through debris than to veer into oncoming cars or off the road · Wait for a safe place to pass · Wear seatbelts · Drive with headlights on at all times Farm equipment operators should: · Use lights and flashers to make equipment more visible · Use slow-moving vehicle emblems on equipment traveling less than 30 mph · Consider using a follow vehicle when moving equipment, especially at night.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Looking for budget agreement during final week of 2019 session

It’s down to the final week of session, although tradition has both chambers of the Legislature working straight through the weekend, right up to Monday’s midnight adjournment.

Leadership returned from the Governor’s Fishing Opener and met for several hours but didn’t come up with overall spending targets for the next twoyear biennium. That means conference committees still don’t know how much funding they will receive and, without those totals, they really can’t start to hammer out differences in spending between House and Senate versions of the major finance bills.

Things can happen fast during this last hectic week of session. With hard deadlines fast approaching – namely adjournment in less than a week – conferees will start making more compromise offers. Movement begins and agreement follows. However, because of large differences in spending and taxes between the House and Senate, it will be challenging to find that middle ground where both sides can agree.

Because the state will be starting the new biennium with around $1 billion surplus – in addition to nearly $500 million in increased revenue since the last budget forecast – the case for rais-

ing taxes is difficult to understand. The two biggest tax hikes in the DFL House proposal are the 20-cents per gallon gas tax increase and the 2-percent provider tax, which is set to expire at the end of June. The gas tax represents a 70-percent increase over the current level and would put Minnesota among the highest in the nation at 48 cents per gallon when fully phased in. The provider, or “sick” tax currently raises more revenue than needed to provide state-sponsored health insurance programs.

In addition to the financial differences between the Senate and the House/governor, there are also policy provisions that are markedly different.

They, too, need to be addressed in order to reach a final over all compromise.

The April storm that blasted southern parts of the state, named Winter Storm Wesley, produced heavy, wet snow and high winds that caused major damage to electric lines throughout large areas. Received a news release from Great River Energy, the supplier of electric power to Minnesota’s rural electric cooperatives, that detailed the amount of damage to their infrastructure. In all, 352 power poles went down during the storm, and more than 8,300 customers lost power.

The crews that go out to restore power, often when storm conditions are still prevalent, deserve accolades for the work they do. In the case of this storm, that work was made even more difficult because many roads were nearly impassable and visibility was poor. At the peak of restoration work, more than 54 line

crews were working in the area. Within five days after the April 11 storm, 15 of Great River’s 16 substations that lost power had been restored.

Neighboring utilities, including Xcel and ITC, also suffered damage during the storm. But, by working together and receiving help from other rural cooperatives and utilities, power

was eventually restored. And considering the amount of damage caused by the storm, line crews did an outstanding job, working safely and efficiently to get the power back on.

One of the ideas we have had, is that all ages should be included and welcomed to our activities.We are, and have been, the “Community Center.” Not because we don’t love the “seniors,” but because the needs of the community have changed, and are changing.

Breakfasts are now served on Tuesday and Friday mornings, from 7:0010:00 am. We were wondering if people would come more often, and how often would that be: 3, 4, or even 5 days a week? See more about breakfasts further on.

Lunches are currently provided in house and delivered. We are thinking of providing lunches, served like breakfasts, no call in necessary.

Lunches would be served from 11:00 to 1:00. We would have a daily special, such as a hamburger, tater tots, and salad, or roast beef and mashed potatoes and gravy.

We would also offer soup and sandwiches or salad. The sandwiches could be chicken salad, ham, or turkey with choices of cheese, lettuce, onion, mayo, and mustard. Salads would vary, There would be a soup that would be served each week.

Presently we offer one evening meal per month. We would consider perhaps one per week?

Beverage and tax would be included, with the exception of already canned or bottled beverages.

We serve a well received menu for breakfast at this time, which is very reasonable for price.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Jesus has the Keys – Jesus is the Christ – Acts 9:1-22 Saul is zealous. He is on fire for his faith. He is passionate about defending and rooting out heretics who have been corrupting the Jewish faith. He was well trained in his scriptures, he had a sharp mind and he was ready to put it to work proving that these early Christians were wrong and to stop them.

Being zealous and being right don’t always go together. Those trained academically like Saul have extensive knowledge around their beliefs and many believe that they can use that knowledge to intellectually change peoples minds. Rarely does that happen. It can be a little like pounding your head against a concrete wall trying to break it. You just make your head hurt.

The sinful tendency when dealing with people who believe differently than you and are unconvinced by your arguments is to use pain to force change. Christians should never cause people pain in hopes that they change their mind, no one should.

Saul is resorting to violence to convey his beliefs and then God intervenes.

Much like we do at times Saul found a way to punish those people who didn’t believe how he wanted them to. He had done it in Jerusalem and now he was moving on to Damascus. Rather non-violently Jesus steps in asking Saul why he is persecuting him. Saul is smart enough to figure out that the person standing before him is divine and doesn’t seem too surprised that he has lost his sight. Saul is told what he should do if he wants to use his holy zeal for the good of the one true God. “Arise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” Through

lack of sight Jesus helps Saul see the truth and that truth comes from the Christian community and faith in Jesus.

Ananias is a little bit funny but I get his hesitation. People don’t usually change so fast. But sometimes God does intervene and people learn the truth in a hurry. Before his conversion Paul had closed off his mind to the possibility that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah. I am sure he had all the reasons down pat as to why Jesus wasn’t the Christ but now he knew the truth.

Now he was set on proving to people that Jesus was the Christ.

This has to be one of the more wonderful things about the Christian faith is that it is provable. We have moved farther and farther away from Jesus’ physical appearance but God has left physical proof behind, testimonies and records of this event. Enough records that if one approaches the topic with a truly open mind the evidence is there to prove to the skeptic that Jesus is who he claims to be, who the church has taught that he is: the Christ, the promised one.

Are we close-minded or just convinced? There is nothing wrong with asking questions about our faith, the data is there. Saul who later was called Paul had the data to prove that Jesus is the Christ. Saul’s’ blinders caused him to miss the fact that Jesus was the Christ and it was by the grace of God that Jesus stopped him on the road to Damascus and helped him see. Everyday God can prove in a different way that Jesus is the Christ. No wonder people can be so zealous about him. Amen.

Fire danger high despite wet weather Despite this spring’s wet weather, much of Minnesota is still dry enough to fuel a dangerous wildfire, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

“It’s easy to think all of this rain has saturated the ground enough to prevent a wildfire,” said Casey McCoy, the DNR’s fire prevention supervisor. “But even though the ground may be wet, the reality is grass, leaves, and pine needles dry surprisingly fast and become ideal fuel for a fire.”

Until foliage greens up, McCoy urges people not to burn debris piles.

Escaped debris fires cause four of every 10 Minnesota wildfires each year. To prevent wildfires due to escaped debris burns, the DNR has issued burning restrictions in 44 counties. Always check the DNR’s statewide fire danger and current burning restrictions web page before burning.

If a debris fire, or any other fire, gets out of control, people should call 911 immediately. Grass fires can be deceptively fast, change direction suddenly, and be challenging to extinguish.

Trained firefighting professionals would rather be called in to put out a fire safely than have someone get hurt or lose their life trying to extinguish it themselves.

In the end, prevention is key. People planning to have a campfire this spring should follow Smokey Bear’s safety rules: Keep flammable material 3 feet away from the fire.

Attend to the campfire at all times.

Have a handy source of water ready.

Stir the ashes and make certain the campfire is completely out before leaving.

Homeowners are reminded to be aware of bears this spring and check their property for food sources that could attract bears.

“Bears are roaming around now with the loss of snow and warmer weather, so interactions with people have started in many areas of Minnesota,” said Eric Nelson, wildlife damage program supervisor for the Department of Natural Resources.

As bears emerge from hibernation, their metabolism gradually ramps up and they will begin looking for food at a time when berries and green vegetation can be scarce. Remove attractants such as bird seed, garbage, livestock feed, or compost to reduce potential conflict. Attracting bears to yards can lead to property damage and presents dangers to bears.

Black bears are the only bear species that live in the wild in Minnesota. They usually are shy and flee when encountered. Never approach or try to pet a bear. Injury to people is rare, but bears are potentially dangerous because of their size, strength and speed.

The DNR does not relocate problem bears. Relocated bears seldom remain where they are released. They may return to where they were caught or become a problem somewhere else.

The DNR offers some tips for avoiding bear conflicts: Around the yard: Do not feed birds from April 1 to Nov. 15. Anytime you feed birds, you risk attracting bears.

If you must feed birds, hang birdfeeders 10 feet up and 4 feet out from the nearest trees. Use a rope and pulley system to refill birdfeeders, and clean up spilled seeds.

Do not put out feed for wildlife (like corn, oats, pellets or molasses blocks).

Replace hummingbird feeders with hanging flower baskets, which are also attractive to hummingbirds.

Do not leave food from barbeques and picnics outdoors, especially overnight. Coolers are not bear-proof.

Clean and store barbeque grills after each

use. Store them in a secure shed or garage away from windows and doors.

Elevate bee hives on bear-proof platforms or erect properly designed electric fences.

Pick fruit from trees as soon as it’s ripe and collect fallen fruit immediately.

Limit compost piles to grass, leaves and garden clippings, and turn piles regularly. Do not add food scraps.

Harvest garden produce as it matures.

Locate gardens away from forests and shrubs that bears may use for cover.

Use native plants in landscaping whenever possible.

Store pet food inside and feed pets inside. If pets must be fed outdoors, feed them only as much as they will eat.

Garbage: Store garbage in bear-resistant garbage cans or dumpsters. Rubber or plastic garbage cans are not bear-proof.

Keep garbage inside a secure building until the morning of pickup.

Properly rinse all recyclable containers with hot water to remove all remaining product.

Store recyclable containers, such as pop cans, inside.

People should always be cautious around bears. If bear problems persist after cleaning up food sources, contact a DNR area wildlife office for advice. For the name of the local wildlife manager, contact the DNR Information Center at 651-296-6157 or 888-6466367, or visit mndnr.gov/contact/locator.html.

Last year the DNR asked the public to report bear sightings outside primary bear range in Minnesota. Male bears are known to travel long distances in search of new habitat and food, and there is a public perception that bear range has expanded in the central and southern counties of the state.
