Inside the coach’s playbook -By Harvey Mackay

John Calipari is one of the most fascinating basketball coaches you will ever meet.

He is calm and animated at the same time. He is intense yet introspective. He loves to – and lives to – win.

And he always, always, always lives by the credo, “Players First.” His new book bears that title.

The University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach has had much more than the usual amount of success. Welldeserved, I might add. And I had the pleasure of visiting with him during the recent NCAA Final Four Tournament.

I’ve known him since he was the head coach of the New Jersey Nets, when I spoke to their season ticket holders in 1997.

His book, “Players First,” is a straight talk, no-holds-barred, lay-it-on-the-line study of a man and his philosophy. He has stirred up controversy from time to time. He doesn’t apologize for that.

He is committed to developing young players into the best team and the best people they can be.

That is where “Players First” comes in. He says, “We reach our goals by striving together toward collective

goals. During the season, it’s all about the team; after the season, it’s about the individual.” His plain-spoken manner is central so that players can make honest self-appraisals.

He realizes his reputation as a “one and done” guy, where superstar kids play one year and then leave school to go into the NBA. He understands his role in their development when he says that “some people see the young players as future millionaires, just stopping through before they cash in. That’s not what I see. They’re kids, some as young as 17 years old. They all need me in a different way.”

Calipari is completely honest with his players: “Playing for me is going to be the hardest thing you’ve ever done.

“If you’re not up for that, go somewhere else. Please go somewhere else.”

As a real basketball junkie, I was completely enthralled with this book.

I loved the stories, the strategy and the thoughts behind his decisions. And then I realized that I was reading a book about so much more than basketball. Calipari has incorporated a variety of business and life lessons that will resonate with sports fans as well as those who don’t know a slam dunk from a grand slam.

For example, he makes lists and advises readers to write things down and give themselves a deadline. Business people know the importance of being organized and setting goals. Take it from me: If you don’t have a good game plan, how do you expect to win?

Calipari tells his players, “You’ve got to love the grind. Embrace the work. Embrace the sweat. Embrace the pain.” Managers everywhere can relate to that kind of a pep talk. There are parts of every job that require the kind of dedication that enables you to work through the difficult or tedious tasks.

Just like winning basketball requires practice, practice and more practice, to be really good at what you do takes plenty of preparation. You might as well enjoy the journey.

Management and staff alike need to demonstrate a servant mentality toward each other and toward customers. The leadership component is a logical next step for team players.

“Anyone who ever taught one of my kids,” Calipari says, “I wanted them to use every single tool they had to make my kids the best version of themselves.”

Good managers teach or train their staffs to develop their skills for the good of the team. I encourage mentoring at every level. Good advice and sincere interest in career advancement bring rewards to both sides of the relationship.

Calipari believes in sharing the glory, a concept that really successful businesses understand. He says, “After any kind of success we experience, I want every single person who works for the basketball program to feel that their personal imprint is on it.”

But perhaps his most valuable lesson is that he tells his players to “Fail fast. Don’t be afraid to try new things.

Marjorie Schleper inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to announce that Marjorie Schleper of Holdingford, Minn., was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Schleper is pursuing a degree in Agricultural Science at University of Wisconsin–River Falls.

Schleper is among approximately 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My wife and I have a friend we met through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

She has a 1-yearold child, and she recently asked us for some money.

We don’t really approve of how she’s choosing to spend her m o n e y — s h e ’s spending a lot of it on alcohol and cigarettes—but she does need financial help. What should we do?

-Mike Dear Mike, I have a very simple rule for situations like this. If someone is bold enough to ask me for my money, I can be bold enough to attach requirements to the money for their own good.

One of two things will happen when you handle things in this manner. They’ll welcome the help and graciously accept your conditions, or they’ll get mad and act like you have no right interfering in their business. I don’t have a problem helping people who have a good heart and really need a break. But if someone cops an attitude with me in this situation, I wouldn’t break out my wallet anytime soon.

Regardless, if you choose to do this, I’d make the money a gift and not a loan.

Concentrate on trying to get her on a path where she thinks a little straighter, and, as a result, she will make better choices. Teach her how to make and live off a budget or help her enroll in a personal finance course. But right now, just handing her money is like giving a drunk a drink.

This whole situation is a lot bigger than giving someone $35 for diapers.

The answer to that is easy. It’s yes. But in this case I’d probably give it to her in the form of a grocery store gift card.

Many of those don’t allow alcohol and cigarette purchases. Or, I’d just go buy

diapers and baby food and take them to her. Actually helping people is a lot more work than just throwing money at them. To really help someone, you have to get down in their mess and walk beside them.

Financially speaking, her problem is just as much mismanagement of money as it is a lack of money. Anyone who chooses smokes and alcohol over diapers for their kid needs to be smacked. But since you can’t really do that, you can put conditions on your help that are designed to help her improve her decision-making abilities and, by doing that, improving her life.

-Ashley Dear Ashley, I’d cash them out now and invest them in something better. Savings bonds earn almost no money. Plus, they’re the kind of things people just leave lying around and forget about.

Back in the day it was a big thing to get and give savings bonds. We’d get them for birthday presents and such.

Then, we’d wait until they matured and cash them out.

That’s exactly what I’d do in your case, Ashley. Cash them out today and put the money into good growth stock mutual funds. You’ll be glad you did!

There is a whole lot of confusion in the world today. What is right and what is wrong? What is truth and what is deception? What should we support or not support?

I believe that if we would look in the right place we would find the answers to those questions and we would not be so confused. The answers are in Black and White in God’s Word. In Deuteronomy 29:29, we read that ‘There are secret things that belong to the Lord, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever.’

Unfortunately, the last place people want to look is the Bible. They have either been taught that it is too complicated to be understood, or they do not regard it as a final authority. Either way, it is a disheartening lie straight from the enemy of our souls. Of course the devil does not want us to know what God’s Word says! How sad that most people choose to listen to and believe the lie instead of the truth that is from God our Creator.

One of the distorted lies that is really in our face more than ever is the support of wickedness. Wickedness is despicable sin against a Holy and Just God. He does Not tolerate it whatsoever! He does not ever give a hint in His Word that He will ‘support you no matter what’. On the contrary, He makes it very clear- in black and white, that wickedness will be punished! God loves us, yes- but He does not ever tolerate or accept our deliberate sinning against Him. Why did Jesus die on the cross? It was a horrible death on our behalf to show us how repulsive our sin and wickedness is to a Holy God! Some religious leaders ‘support’ sinful behaviors and twist Christianity to boost their popular-

Swanville 7th and 8th Grade St. Paul Trip The Swanville seventh and eighth graders started reading books in early September 2013 that were donated to the school by the St. Cloud Reading Society. The Doc and Tweed mystery books, Peril At Pig’s Eye Cave, The Return of Jesse James, and The Fitzgerald Caper were written by John Koblas and are about two teenagers who go around St. Paul and Northfield solving mysteries. The books focus on Minnesota history and historical landmarks as well as mystery.

The seventh and eighth graders had several assignments in Tom Bzdok’s social studies and Kathy Detloff’s English classes. The students worked on presentations and slideshows of historical places, streets, or people mentioned in the books to present in their social studies classes.

One day in January, Detloff asked her students to name historical places in St. Paul that they would like to visit that they had read about in the books. They chose the Wabasha Street Caves, James J. Hill house, The St. Paul Cathedral, Rice Park, Harriet Island, Landmark Center, and a drive along Summit Avenue.

The Swanville Lions Club generously donated five hundred twenty-five dollars to help pay for admission to the James J. Hill house and the Wabasha Street Caves. The students paid the rest of the expenses.

On April 30, 2014, the students, teachers, and parent Joei Klemish loaded the school bus and headed to St. Paul.

The first stop was Harriet Island, named after Harriet Bishop, a pioneer school teacher. The ferry was called “Ugh The Tug” and the docks were a lot longer than normal boating docks.

The group visited the Wabasha Street Caves, which is on the national list of haunted places. Eighth grader, Alita Scherping said, “When I walked in, it didn’t even look like a cave. It looked like a fancy restaurant combined with a disco club.” The guide took the students on a tour of some of the caves and told them ghost stories about events that took place right where they were standing. In one of the caves, there were still original pick axe marks from when miners made the cave. The caves are always at a temperature of 54 degrees, even in the summer, so they were a perfect spot for people to use for mushroom farms. The

The guide also told the students about the gangsters in the caves. According to him, the caves are haunted. Many people have reported seeing a man with a white Fedora wearing a pinstriped suit.

They all describe him exactly the same.

Some people have also reported seeing a beautiful woman with long, dark hair and a white dress that went down to the floor. Becca Taylor, a Swanville eighth grader, took a picture of a friend standing next to a suit of armor. In the picture, there was an odd white circle. She took another picture and it was gone. The tour guide said that she had an orb, a spiritual body on camera.

Once the 7th and 8th graders arrived at Rice Park, they looked at the trees, watched the pigeons, and took pictures with the Peanuts comic book characters and F. Scott Fitzgerald statues. They hope that they can come back sometime when the park is lit for Christmas. The students also made brief visits to Landmark Center, the St. Paul Hotel lobby, and the St. Paul Public Library.

Hill house, which has 42 rooms, 13 bathrooms, and 22 fireplaces. “The house had carvings in every piece of wood,” said Ellissa Blum, a Swanville seventh grader. Kyle and Bryan Doetkott recently learned that their grandparents are currently living in a house in Melrose formerly owned by the Hill family.

A high point to many students was the visit to the St. Paul Cathedral. “It was like a museum of the Bible,” says Gage VanRisseghem, a Swanville seventh grader. It was built in 1904. According to Wikipedia, “The interior is lighted by 24 stained glass windows.”

The St. Paul Cathedral website states, “These stained glass windows are the work of renowned stained glass artist Charles Connick.” Swanville seventh grader, Olivia Mettler said, “The St. Paul Cathedral was the most beautiful place I have ever seen.”

To finish the St. Paul project, the students have written articles to send to area newspapers and made iMovies to share at presentations for the Lions’ Club, the St. Cloud Reading Society, and others. They agree that they now know more about the history and layout of their capitol city.

Series of impacts bog rail traffic

An interested group of ag stakeholders and legislators met May 5 with representatives from two Class I railroads that serve Minnesota. Brian Sweeney and Steve Mulligan, from Burlington Northern Sante Fe, along with Herb Jones of Canadian Pacific, spoke to the group and then answered questions about the slow movement of agricultural products this past winter.

They all mentioned three factors that led to the slowdown in rail car deliveries. One is the improving economy that has seen an increase in the demand for transportation from all sectors, including crude oil and grain movement. Second was the unusually cold and snowy winter that caused slowdowns. And lastly, problems with congestion in and around Chicago led to an increase in what’s called “dwell time,” which is a measure of how long cars sit in a rail yard waiting to be moved. During the peak of the slowdown, cars on the CP line sat in Chicago for an average of 38 hours before being moved again. Today, that dwell time is down to 24 hours.

Bakken oil shipments will continue

to grow, according to Sweeney. He added, “When the economy improves, so does the demand for transportation. We are getting back to pre-recession levels, with the main areas of increased shipping being Bakken crude and soybeans destined for the Pacific Northwest and export to Asia.”

Cold temperatures also affect railroad operations. When it gets down near zero, air brakes are not as effective so train length has to be shortened. The speed at which trains operate is also reduced during times of extremely cold weather. According to Jones, the speed of CP trains on average has increased 18 percent in the last two weeks.

It was pointed out that 40 percent of our nation’s rail shipments pass through Chicago, where six of America’s seven Class I railroads utilize trackage. Problems with slowdowns began in midDecember and continued throughout the winter. Car loading on the CP fell by 8 percent in the first quarter of this year.

Jones added, “As Chicago goes, so goes the CP. We need to go back and review this past winter, and then use it as a lesson to improve our service.”

More locomotives and rail cars, along with new trackage and double tracks in certain areas, will hopefully lead to greater efficiencies. “This is a real challenge for us,” Sweeney added. “Our goal is to be caught up with the shipment of grain by July.”

This is our last full week of session in St. Paul. The big three bills, those pertaining to taxes, spending, and bonding, still remain to be passed. The tax bill, the second on that subject this session, has been agreed to, but the other two are still be negotiated. It’s not known if we’ll remain in session right through the weekend to beat the deadline for adjournment on Monday. If agreement was reached early in the week on bonding, the lone bill requiring Republican votes for passage, the end of session could come quickly.

David asked a critical question that every believer asks: “How long, O Lord, will You forget me?” And when he did not get an immediate answer, he cried again: “How long will You look the other way?” And finally, “How long must I struggle?”

Our Lord may be out of sight but we are never beyond His reach! David felt that God had abandoned him, had turned away from him and that He was no longer interested in him. But David did not give up. He continued to pray and said, “I will trust in Your unfailing love.”

His faith was larger than all of his fears. He knew God would deliver him as He had in the past.

The City Council meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson.

Motion made by Council Member Brian Lange and seconded by Council Member Robert Maciej to accept the minutes from the April 7th, 2014 Regular Council Meeting. Motion carried unanimously.

The change from a 3.2 License to a regular On-Sale license would give UBA more flexibility in beer variety to better serve their audience. City Clerk, Reva Mische, will research this issue further.

• Residents were present to discuss applying a load of Class 5 Gravel and dust control on 50th Avenue; Motion made by Council Member Joan Olson and seconded

by Council Member Brian Lange to approve applying dust control measures to 50th Avenue. Motion carried, Mayor Rollie Johnson abstained. Motion made by Council Member Robert Maciej and seconded by Council Member Brian Lange to approve the application of a load of class 5 gravel to 50th Avenue.

• Members of Mount Olive Lutheran Church were present

to discuss a possible donation of the Church building to the City.

The City would be responsible for associated costs of the transfer of ownership; Motion made

by Council Member Brian Lange and Seconded by Council Member Joan Olson to pursue the acquisition of the Church building.

• Fire Chief Jay Baggenstoss presented the names of four new candidates to join the Fire Department. The new members of the Fire Department would be probationary until all training is completed. Baggenstoss informed the council that new gear is needed for the new members. Baggenstoss is meeting with companies to get prices for the new gear; Motion made by Council Member Robert Maciej and seconded by Joan Olson to hire Robin Yorek, Garret Doucette, Brady Burgraff, and Sean Lampert to become new members of the Upsala Volunteer Fire Department. Motion carried.

Council Member Brian Lange abstained.

Maintenance Report, Frank Koopmeiners: Water and Sewage usage is up for the month.

The final location of the Force Main as part of the upcoming 2014 Street and Utility Improvements Project was discussed.

Clerk/Treasurer Reva Mische will contact City Engineer Scott Hedlund to discuss changes made to the location.

Tar projects: Millwood Township is doing a section approx.

1.75 miles and perhaps we could join in that bid. Ray will contact Millwood Township to check on whether or not the bids had been completed. Ray also received a quote from Astech seal coating for 4.40 miles (Brakken Road, 341st and 130th east end) the cost would be $67,100.00. Erv would need to do some crack filling first and along 341st one spot would need to have the bank built up.

by Mike. Motion approved. DNR access was discussed with the information from the attorney and it was decided the township would not sign the agreement until the fence line issue is resolved. Ron will contact Trygg Hansen.

Additional agenda items: Review of the Todd County Association meeting- Ray stated dues went up, all officers stayed the same. Beach maintenance- Received 3 quotes for the summer of 2014, Ray made a motion to accept the quote for Joe Kemper as he had done it last year and did a good job. Mike made a second to that motion. All in favor motion carried. Review of the Equalization minutes- Ray made a motion to accept the minutes as printed.

Public Comment: Request was made from Cozy Cove that perhaps the road could be angled/ sloped a bit to let the water run off rather than down the road. A request was made that the Township do a better job of weed control (dandelions) on the public access off of Cty Rd 2. Another request was for Arctic Drive, it was suggested that to get rid of the washboard effect, perhaps Herdering could cut the road a bit deeper and then roll back.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.

Road and Bridge Report: Ron reported that the road check had been completed and that the signs were all located; although several had holes in them and two had bent posts. Ray stated he felt the Township needs to have more control over road projects and gravel.

May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day

By Connie J. Nelson, Hands of Hope Resource Center In 1962 president, John F. Kennedy and the 87th Congress of the United States proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week, a time set aside to honor law enforcement officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. Todd County has had one officer killed in the line of duty, and that was Marshall George Williams from Long Prairie on July 29, 1922. He was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend several bank robbers that had robbed the bank in Hewitt. We have however had officers wounded in the line of duty, which means that they were wounded protecting and serving us, Joe Public, as that is their “line of duty”.

Many of us cringe when we see the flashing lights of a squad car in our

rear view, and probably for a good reason, because we have been speeding, have a broken light or some other traffic violation. On the other hand however, we feel a sense of relief when we have summoned law enforcement to the scene of a domestic, a theft in our home, or one of those life changing “accidents” that happen. These are the everyday situations that law enforcement officers put themselves into to protect us, to perform their “line of duty”.

This week of May 11-17, 2014, take a minute to thank your local law enforcement for putting their life on the line every time they put on their uniform and set out for a day at work.

May Click-It or Ticket Returns - Memorial Day Big Concern Seat belt and child restraint violations will be the target May 19 – June 1, as troopers, deputies and city police officers work together to save lives and prevent needless tragedies on Minnesota roadways during the annual May ClickIt or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign.

Since many of our crash injuries and fatalities involving the non-use of seat belts occur at night, about half of the enforcement hours can be expected to be held during the time period between 4 p.m. and 1 a.m. Minnesota’s seat belt law is a primary offense, meaning you can get stopped for not being appropriately restrained.

Memorial Day will be a main focus time period, as it is in the top six dangerous holidays on our state roadways.

Looking back from 2009-2013, the Memorial Day holiday weekend was the deadliest of the holidays, with at least 31 deaths and more than 2,060 reported crashes.

According to Sgt. Curt Mowers, Regional Public Information Officer, “This is nothing new that we expect from our

motorists, and everyone needs to work together to ensure a safer environment on our roadways, especially since we are certain that seat belts save lives.”

Preliminary data provided by the Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety shows that in 2013 there were 94 deaths and 247 injuries where the vehicle occupant was not buckled up. That data also shows deaths of at least two children under the age of eight - who were not properly restrained in a car seat - and seven more were seriously injured in 2013.

These enforcement and education projects are components of the state’s Toward Zero Death (TZD) initiative. A primary vision of the TZD program is to create a safe driving culture in Minnesota in which motorists support a goal of zero road fatalities by practicing and promoting safe and smart driving behavior. TZD focuses on the application of four strategic areas to reduce crashes - education, enforcement, engineering and emergency trauma response. Local traffic safety coalitions strongly support these efforts.

By Don Schreiner, DNR Lake Superior Fisheries Supervisor Q: What is the difference between a steelhead and a rainbow trout?

A: Steelhead are a migratory form of rainbow trout that spend part of their lives in the ocean or Great Lakes and return to spawn in freshwater streams and rivers. Steelhead, first introduced to Lake Superior in 1895, occur naturally along the Pacific Coast. They have become naturalized along Minnesota’s North Shore; the population relies mainly on natural reproduction rather than stocking.

Spring spawning runs in Minnesota have been delayed this year by our long, cold winter, but steelhead are expected to arrive in streams up and down the North Shore by early to mid-May if the weather cooperates.

CentraCare Kidney Program receives 5-Diamond Patient Safety status

The CentraCare Kidney Program achieved 5-Diamond Patient Safety status, the highest status given by Renal Network 11. For two consecutive years, all CentraCare dialysis outpatient facilities and the home therapy program have received this distinction. To qualify, employees were required to complete five Patient Safety educational modules, which included tools and resources for implementation of each patient safety concept, and submit documentation to Network 11.

“Patient safety is our highest priority, and this program is another example of how our employees attain that goal,” said David Walz, CentraCare Kidney Program Director.

Renal Network 11 includes the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Michigan. It is one of eighteen networks in the United States, established by the federal government to improve the quality of dialysis and kidney transplant services for people with end-stage renal disease.

The CentraCare Kidney Program has 132 employees and offers dialysis services across Central Minnesota including units in: Alexandria, Big Lake, Brainerd, Cambridge, Litchfield, Little Falls, Princeton, St. Cloud and Staples.

Together, the outpatient dialysis program provided more than 68,500 treatments in 2013.
