Business lessons from pandemic

H a r v a r d Business School surveyed 600 CEOs recently and asked them what keeps them awake at night during this global pandemic.

The results found that almost every aspect of doing business must be completely rethought for both short-term survival and long-term success.

The issues cited fall into three main categories: 1. Continuous learning and integrating new information.

2. Making complex decisions and plans quickly and solving problems.

3. Empathy, maintaining wellness and focus.

I’m a big believer in lifelong learning. You don’t go to school once for a lifetime; you are in school all of your life. Companies need to create a corporate culture that strives for continuous improvement.

In his 1995 book “Managing in a Time of Great Change,” Peter Drucker, the late, great management guru, wrote: “It is a safe prediction that in the next 50 years, schools and universities will change more

and more drastically than they have since they assumed their present form more than 300 years ago when they reorganized themselves around the printed book.

“What will force these changes is, in part, new technology; …in part, the demands of a knowledge-based society in which organized learning must become a lifelong process …”

Students and teachers at all levels have had to adjust to remote learning, and that will most definitely not be just a passing fad. With a majority of people now working remotely, new systems have been developed in short order. I don’t expect that to change as companies and employees recognize the benefits of working from home.

Many decisions were made within hours of lockdown announcements.

Anyone who has management responsibilities understands that decisionmaking can be precarious. After you’ve done all your homework, when making decisions, I’ve found that you have to trust your gut. If I’m not sure, I check with people I trust to give me the knowledge on all sides.

As for planning, I like to say people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan. Things no longer rest on a predictable base.

Companies spend days, if not weeks, agonizing over their mission statement and business plan. Get the business model right. Then accessorize it with the details.

You may not need more than a few action plans focused on very restricted areas.

It’s not the sheer magnitude of the preparation that matters. It’s the relevance of what you do. Is it clear? Will it change behavior?

A basic principle in the sales and marketing world is that people don’t usually buy products and services. They buy solutions to problems. Successful salespeople and marketers tailor their products and services to meet a demand that is not necessarily immediately evident, but nonetheless very real. They identify problems in terms of solutions and anticipate problems long before they become apparent. They must be empathetic to their customers’ needs.

Empathy is an emotion that is a sense of shared suffering, most often combined with a desire to alleviate the suffering of another and to show special kindness to them. Compassionate acts attempt to alleviate that suffering as if it were one’s own.

Where, you might ask, does compassion fit in business? Will it hurt the bottom line? Will it make our company look soft, or like a pushover?

The answers are: at all levels, no, and definitely not. Compassion and profitability are not mutually exclusive.

On the contrary, companies that are perceived as people-oriented and good corporate citizens have a far better chance of succeeding than those that put profits ahead of people. In times like these, empathy will win the day.

As for wellness, personal health is important for corporate health. Exercise is good for your mind as well as your body.

Corporate America has long endorsed fitness and physical health, but it’s done a mediocre job getting employees to buy into the whole program.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Changes II A four leafed clover. No-one looks for them anymore, but at one time finding one of these treasures was sure to bring one good luck. They were placed between pages of books to dry, so they could continue to offer the owner future fortune.

Sometimes they were kept as a special remembrance of a loved one who was serving time on overseas military duty. Did it work? We don’t know, but it gave the owner a bit of hope, which probably was needed.

Another item which at one time had popularity was copper baby shoes. The child’s first pair if shoes were sent to an organization that covered them with copper colored paint and fastened them to a board to be used as an ornament for public viewing on a shelf. For a period of years, having this procedure done was definitely the thing to do. Why? What purpose did it perform? I guess it was done because other parents were doing it.

When powered washing machines first became popular, they were powered by a small gas engine. The flexible metal pipe, which moved the exhaust fumes out of the house, usually was put through the door or an outside window. The gas engine dripped oil and gave off a burned oil smell, but if the lady of the house no longer needed to scrub the clothes on a washboard and if the radio said the washing machine was the best modern home invention, smell and oil spots were overlooked. Homemakers didn’t seem to complain about moving washtubs of water in and out of the house.

At one time air conditioning was not yet common in commercial buildings. I remember a time while doing the hand bookkeeping, the banker wore leather sleeve covers to keep the person’s sweat

from messing up the bank records. The temperature in these buildings were often the same as the outdoor temperature. A small fan was used to move the warm air around offering some comfort, but larger fans were not used, since they blew too much air causing the paper bookkeeping to blow off of the desk. There was sometimes a large fan near the top of the room. These all seemed to create a very noticeable rattling noise while being used.

When School lunches were brought from home, they frequently were carried in paper bags. The sandwiches were made of homemade bread and wrapped in waxed paper. Both the bags and waxed paper were used carefully, since they were reused for many future lunches.

Thinking about homemade bread, I remember a time when I had not tasted any bread other than homemade bread. One evening we were visiting at a relative’s house and when lunchtime occurred, there was a different kind of bread being served.

I had never previously tasted bread like their Wonder bread. It was softer, had smaller holes in it and really tasted good with butter. On the car ride home, I was informed that I had made a pig of myself with the bread. Today, homemade bread is special and store-bought bread is ordinary.

I guess taste changes when one gets older.

That’s why liver, meat loaf and sauerkraut are a treat today!

right now, but if you can focus fully on the task at hand, and shut out everything else, you can accomplish amazing things.

Focus is a topic I hear about frequently in business. The most common complaints?

Too many projects spinning at one time.

Too many interruptions. Too many phone calls and emails. Too many things to do.

Too little time. Too many schedules to balance. Too much uncertainty about the future.

Stay focused as best you can, and don’t let things happen to you – not when

you can make things happen.

Even with everything that is going on these days, I still have a steady job and a good income.

I’m thinking about taking some money out of my savings account in order to completely pay off my credit card debt.

How do you feel about this idea?

-Erin Dear Erin, It’s not a bad plan if you’ve come to a point where you understand a few things. The credit card and the debt aren’t the real problems. They’re symptoms of buying things you probably don’t need with money you don’t have. You need to take a long look in the mirror, because the person who’s looking back at you is the real problem.

If you can accept this, and are committed to changing yourself and your financial habits, I’d say go for it.

Just don’t wipe out your savings in the process. Leave plenty of cash in there, especially right now when so many things are uncertain. Also, make sure you cut up that credit card, close the account, and make a promise to yourself that you’ll never use those things again.

on a written, monthly budget, rebuild your savings as quickly as possible.

Saving money is always a good thing.

And everyone needs an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses for the unexpected stuff life throws at you!

-Dave Dear Dave, Do you have a rule for calculating how much money to set aside for home repair and maintenance?

-Bobby Dear Bobby, I don’t really know of a formula to determine this sort of thing. I’d suggest looking at your checkbook over the previous year, and see what you spent on maintenance and repair issues.

Home maintenance is kind of like car maintenance, in that it’s going to depend on the age and general condition of the house. If you’re driving an older model car, you expect to put more into it over time, right? It’s kind of the same principle with houses. The older the structure, the greater the likelihood you’ll have to pump some money into it.

Make sure you look at things from a realistic point of view. You probably won’t need a new roof anytime soon if you had one installed in the last couple of years. But give your house a good going over, inside and out, every six months or so. This will go a long way in assessing what’s needed—and what might pop up in the future!

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the March Junior High Student of the Month, eighth grade student Karley Loven. Karley is the daughter of John and Tanya Loven. When she has nothing to do, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing basketball and reading. In the future she plans to go to college to play basketball and for Social Work but her ultimate dream is to play basketball for her career and to travel. Since sixth grade she has played sports which in-

clude volleyball, basketball, and softball.

She started playing in the band in fourth grade and was voted to be on student council in seventh grade. Karley has played basketball for the MN Comets since 6th grade and attended Camp Lebanon since 3rd grade.

She volunteers to help at bible camps and clean the highway with her grandma.

Karley is a student that is consistently on the A Honor Roll. She received the social studies and band student of the year in seventh grade. She also recently took third place in the MN Knights of Columbus State Free Throw Championship. Her favorite thing about school is getting the chance to see friends every day and always finding new ways to make opportunities. Her advice to other students is “Keep your head high and always find the positive in a negative situation.”

Obituaries

Connor M. Throener

Connor M. Throener, 17 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Thursday, May 7, 2020 at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN. A private visitation will take place from 3:00-8:00 P.M. on Friday, May 15, 2020. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Swanville.

Those attending are required to practice social distancing at all times to keep everyone safe.

Funeral arrangements are with Shelley Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN. Connor was born on April 21, 2003 in Little Falls, MN to Luke and Rebecca (Yanta) Throener. He grew up in Swanville, MN where he attended school and was presently a junior at Swanville High School. Connor was employed by various farmers in the Swanville area helping when and wherever needed. He was an avid sportsman who dedicated much of his time to fishing, hunting waterfowl and deer. Connor loved to fix and restore vehicles. He recently finished restoring his 1981 Chevrolet pickup truck which he was very proud of. When he wasn’t working on his vehicles, he was helping a close friend or neighbor fix or repair their vehicle. Connor will forever be remembered for his generosity and his infectious smile. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Connor is survived by parents, Luke and Rebecca “Becky” Throener of Swanville, MN; grandparents, Ambrose and Shirley Throener of Little Falls, MN; brother, Lucas Throener of Swanville, MN; Aimee (fiancé Justin Ainali) Kruchten of Grey Eagle, MN; nieces and nephew, Hannah Kruchten, Jackson Kruchten and Madison Ainali and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.

Connor was preceded in death by grandparents, Paul and Barbara Yanta and uncle, Tim Yanta.

Velerian “Larry” Wenker

P r i v a t e services for Velerian “Larry” Wenker, age 79 of St. Anthony will be held on Saturday in St. Anthony. Larry died Monday, May 4, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital of Covid-19. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Larry was born March 4, 1941 in Greenwald to Bernard and Rose (Kortenbusch) Wenker.

He graduated from high school and then joined the U.S. Navy in 1962. He was stationed in Florida and was a photographer during the Cuban Missile Crisis, where he took several photos of Cuba. He was honorable discharged in 1968. He worked as a machinist for the Emmerson Company in the Twin Cities. He married RadieBolaer in Cebu, Philippines on June 8, 1988. After his retirement from Emmerson, Larry drove school bus in Chaska. Just recently, Larry and Radi moved to St. Anthony. He was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church, Couples for Christ and B.L.D. Larry is survived by his wife, RadieWenker, St. Anthony; his brother and sisters, Clarence (Mary Ann) Wenker, Melrose; Florentine Hammer, Richmond; and Adeline (Stan) Schaefer, Burnsville, and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers and sisters; Raymond Wenker; Sylvia Schulzetenberg; Edna Worms; Marie Schneider; Herbert Wenker; Adolph Wenker and Edmund Wenker.

Janice M. Vogel

Janice M. Vogel, age 83 of Albany, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at her home near St. Anthony, Minnesota.

A private family inurnment will be held in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery.

A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date after restrictions are lifted.

Janice Mary Becker was born July 28, 1936 in Melrose, Minnesota to Clarence and Florentine (Hallerman) Becker. Her family moved to Elbow Lake when she was a child and then back to Melrose where Janice graduated high school. She worked at the Melrose Telephone Company as a switchboard operator throughout high school and in her early years of marriage. Janice married Claude Vogel on June 19, 1956 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple lived in Freeport for a year and then moved to St. Anthony, where they started their family farm and lived for the last 63 years.

Janice was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers in St. Anthony. She enjoyed camping, gardening, cooking, baking, reading, embroidery, and playing cards with a card club. Janice’s pride and joy was her family. She loved to spend time with her kids and grandkids and she would often make comments about how proud she was of them all.

Survivors include her husband, Claude Vogel of Albany; children, Debra (Richard) Schreifels of Staples, Michael (Jane) Vogel of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Richard (Laura) Vogel of Albany, Brian Vogel of Alexandria, Lori (Dan) Austing of Freeport, Lisa (John) Buttweiler of Avon, Steve (Natasha) Vogel of Albany, and Tom (Jaclyn) Vogel of Albany; 23 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia Dickhaus of Melrose; and brothers, Kenneth Becker of Hastings, Henry Becker of Melrose, and Greg Becker of Shoreline, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, David Vogel in 2009; grandson, Mason Vogel; and brother, Roger Becker.

Emily Schleppenbach

E m i l y Schleppenbach, age 83 of Albany died on Monday, May 4, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Her family will hold a private service at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and burial will follow in the parish Cemetery.

Emily was born March 13, 1937 in Chewelah, Washington to William and Nellie ( Tethro ) Goodman. She grew up in Chewelah and met her future husband, Gary Schleppenbach. The two were married on April 26, 1956 in Idaho. The couple moved to Albany after their marriage. Emily worked at Fingerhut for over 20 years and she retired in 1999. She was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Emily is survived by her children; Wayne (Jennie) Schleppenbach, Alexandria; Patty Schleppenbach, Albany; Sherry (David) Ostendorf, Melrose; and Gary Schleppenbach, Jr., Albany. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gary Schleppenbach, Sr.; her sons, Patrick Schleppenbach, Joseph Schleppenbach; her grandson, David Ostendorf and 12 brothers and sisters.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the March Senior High student of the month, junior Sydney VanRisseghem. She is the daughter of Brett and Angie Va n R i s s e g h e m .

Sydney has a wide variety of interests, which include hanging out with friends and family, and eating ice cream. She is very active, including playing sports for school, swimming, wakeboarding, skiing, shooting archery, and also enjoys hunting. She works at St. Otto’s Care Center, which she thoroughly enjoys.

She relaxes by playing with her dog Jojo.

Math instructor Liza Hasse says, “Sydney is very deserving of being chosen Student of the Month. She works very hard to understand the topic at hand. Sydney will ask for help when needed and has become a self-advocate for her learning. She takes the time to look through her mistakes and tries to learn from them so as to not repeat the same mistakes. Sydney is very respectful in class, I thoroughly enjoy working with Sydney and getting to know her. Sydney has developed into a mature young lady who is determined to succeed.”

Sydney’s future plans include attending a college close to home and she would like to do something in the medical field, hopefully sonography or radiology.

Sydney has stayed busy during her high school career, participating in volleyball 7th-11th grade, basketball 8th-10th grade, softball 7th-11th grade. She was also on the yearbook committee 9th grade-10th grade and the prom committee during 11th grade. She also volunteers for the Swanville Dollars for Scholars. Her achievements include being on the A and B honor roll all throughout high school and receiv-

Sydney’s favorite thing about school is being able to see your friends and everyone being stressed about school and making jokes about failing even though we all do good in school. She advises other students “If you procrastinate, don’t worry we all do, but make sure you actually turn in your work on time, and have FUN in school because the last few years fly by.”

Science Instructor Jason Lee says, “Sydney is a very positive student in class.

She keeps a good attitude even when facing the difficult content in Chemistry. Sydney works especially well in small group labs.

She is a team player that will help when needed - a trait that will serve her and her community well in the future.”

The programs honoring Veterans at the St. Joseph’s and Lakeview Cemeteries have also been cancelled.

These events will resume in 2021.

As in the past, flags will be placed on the graves of Veterans at the St. Joseph and Lakeview Cemeteries.

Burtrum City May 4, 2020 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order on Monday, May 4th, 2020 at 7 pm by Mayor Ron Strassburg. The following members were present Sharon Erickson, Mitchell Bruggenthies, Kevin Rohde, and Sara Macho.

Minutes of the Burtrum City council April meeting were read and approved by a motion made

by Kevin Rohde and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies upon vote motion carried.

Treasure report was given. A motion was made by Kevin Rohde and seconded by Sharon Erickson to approve the report, motion carried. A motion was made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and Sara Macho to pay outstanding bills, motion carried.

Community member Irene Bjelland attended the meeting to request a building permit. After a discussion, a motion was made

by Sharon Erickson and seconded

by Kevin Rohde to grant a permit, upon vote motion carried.

Sue Rotty attended the meet-

ing for the Heritage Club, asking for a permit for the club’s annual raffle. Upon discussion a permit was granted by a motion made by Sharon Erickson and seconded by Kevin Rohde.

The council discussed the City’s Ordinances after input from the council members it will be tabled until further questions are answered.

The bathroom and water will not be available at the Lions Park due to the Covid 19 recommendations.

The city will join the Burnhamville Township for clean-up day on Sat., May 16th at the Burtrum Lions Park from 9 am to 11 am.

There is a small fee for some items such as appliances, and tires. Bulk garbage items such as mattresses, furniture, or carpet will be accepted for no charge. Hazardous waste will not be accepted.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held June 1st, 2020 at 7 pm.

Local decisions would better serve 2020 grads The latest executive order by the governor seems to have struck a nerve with a group that we could call “graduation moms.”

Guidance issued by the Minnesota Dept. of Education concerning how graduation ceremonies may or may not be conducted sounds like top-down micro-management. Rules such as no car-pooling if schools plan a car parade to honor their graduates. The guidance goes even further, saying that windows should be rolled up for the entire ceremony if cars are parked next to each other. If six feet apart, then those in vehicles would be allowed to roll their windows down.

There are more. Guidance says that events should be brief, without food, beverages or bathrooms. Following the ceremony, graduates should not throw their caps in the air because that may encourage them to leave their vehicle. And, as for private graduation parties, the Dept. of Health is discouraging them as well, saying that gatherings of people from multiple households are not in the spirit of the stay-at-home order.

Think of what this year’s senior class has missed as their high school careers come to a quiet and somewhat lonely end.

Winter basketball tournaments were abruptly cancelled, and the entire spring sports season was called off. With distance-learning, much of the social contact and other activities that seniors take part in were lost.

Wouldn’t this be a topic better served by making it a local decision? Our local school boards and administration know their schools and their students, and they

are fully capable of planning ceremonies that are respectful and yet still maintain social distancing. The logistics are far different for a school graduating 75 or 100 students than they are for a school with 750 graduates. One school in southern Minnesota had even mapped out its football field, with ample space being designated for each graduate to sit during the ceremony.

Although it didn’t come as a total surprise, the speed at which our state budget surplus disappeared is eye-opening. The February forecast called for $1.5 billion to be left over when the two-year biennium ended next June. Just two months later, another projection said that, not only was the surplus gone, it had turned into a $2.4 billion deficit. That’s a turnaround of $4 billion, brought on by reduced tax collections due to the economy grinding to a halt.

And, it could be even worse. This latest projection assumed a resurging economy in the third quarter of this year and tax collections making a modest recovery. Compared to the numbers from the last financial crisis back in 2008, these current projections are more positive. Let’s hope they’re right!

This marks the final full week of the regular session. Bills are scheduled to be heard in floor action each day. Items relating to agriculture, transportation, taxes, bonding and energy are among the bills remaining to be acted on.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray talked about the beaver issue and damage to 341st. Ray asked that the Township pay $100.00 for having the beavers removed. Ray also tried to contact the property owner along 321st as the water is getting high along that road as well. Waiting for a call back to possibly blow the

beaver dam. Ron mentioned 116th has high water also, probably due to beavers, Ray will check it out. Discussion on which roads need shouldering, Arden, 335th, 341st and spots on Brakken. Ron asked about options for the culverts that need to be opened up each year. It was suggested Erv clean out the area around the culvert entrances. Boxwood Trail needs grading. Crack filling was discussed, just 341st or should other roads be looked at as well. Mike made the motion to have the two areas that were bid on repaired and to have the contractor look at some of the other roads if time allows. Ron made the 2nd to that motion, Motion carried.

Detour begins May 18 for Highway 71 bridge reconstruction in Long Prairie

Motorists who travel Highway 71 in Long Prairie will encounter delays and a detour as crews begin to reconstruct the bridge over the Long Prairie River on Monday, May 18.

The detour will be in place until mid-September.

Here’s what to expect: · Highway 71 will close and detour using the south and north junction of Todd County Road 56/Riverside Drive through August. · There will be a temporary three-way stop at the Highway 71 intersection of County Road 56/ Riverside Drive and Highway 27/First Avenue NE. · Local access will remain open to businesses and residents on either side of the closed bridge work area.

Crews will first replace the bridge over the Long Prairie River. After the bridge is complete in August, crews will resurface the road between First Avenue NE and Hope Drive. The work will require lane closures and flaggers with a pilot car.

Once complete in mid-September, the $1.9 million project will provide a new bridge structure, improve drainage and provide a smoother road surface.

Sunday church bulletins quite often reveal more than the words printed on them. Other than the date on the front of the bulletin the order of service changes very little. There seems to be three important words that appear in every order of service: Invocation, Offering and Benediction. And in between those words the hymns, Scripture and special music will be “recycled” from week to week. But there is little new or different.

Even contemporary worship services seem to follow the same format and formula week after week.

Perhaps that’s why Psalm 96:1 explodes with a challenge: “Sing to the Lord a NEW SONG!” - which literally means “NEW THINGS!” If God is alive and well in our lives and in our churches we will surely be seeing new things and singing new songs because we will see Him at work in our lives and in the life of our churches. Prayers will be answered and lives changed, sinners will be saved and His disciples will be called to serve Him in new and different ways showing His love and care to those around us.

We will have to rearrange the order of service to make time for public praise to share what He is doing and sing new songs because He is doing new things!

And then in verse two we read, “Proclaim His salvation day after day!”

When the proclamation of His salvation is the centerpiece of our work and worship, we will be overcome with His joy and “sing new songs!”

Dear Motor Medics, I have purchased my first camper and I am trying to get it ready for the road. It is a 40-foot fifth wheel toy hauler that weighs about 20k lbs. I have a 2017 Ram Diesel truck that I use to pull my boat, but it does not have working trailer brakes. The dealer wants over 1k to repair the system. Can I install an aftermarket brake controller on the truck even though it came with a factory one? The ride home from the camper dealership was a little scary without camper brakes and I don’t want to pull to far without them.

-Ralph in Beaumont, Texas Its good to see that you have a truck that should be able to pull that size camper. We have many calls and emails from people wanting more power out of their truck so they can overpull which is never a good idea. The second most answered question is getting the trailer to stop. Trailer brakes are required for large campers most everywhere by law loaded or unloaded. Many trucks are now coming equipped with factory installed brake control units but when they fail the cost can be outrageous. We have seen many aftermarket brake controls installed and the factory one bypassed either due to failure or personal choice. Ask your local trailer dealer to recommend one to fit your needs. If you are not comfortable installing and testing one ask them to install it.

-Take care, The Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My 2008 GMC Acadia seems to be having a transmission issue. When I drive it for short trips such as 3 miles or less it works fine but if I drive over 3 it starts to act up. The transmission will jerk very hard as it shifts and sometimes when I stop it seems to go into neutral then bangs

into gear. The dealer replaced it at no charge under extended warranty once but now it’s out again and they want $3800 to replace it. Is there any cheap fix I can do to get it going again?

-Mike in Bloomington, Illinois The short answer is no, there is not a cheap fix for this one. We have replaced over a hundred of this model of transmission in our own shop and yes, they are expensive if you go with a new dealership part. There are alternatives though and if you like your dealership they may even be able to offer you one of them. Many aftermarket companies build great transmissions with 3yr 100k mile warranties and there are used transmissions from parts sources like car-part.com who can help you source a certified used part with a warranty. We have seen used units as low as $2k installed. While still expensive, it is a far cry from $3800. The other option for you may be having yours rebuilt. The cost can greatly vary depending on how much is wrong with your unit.
