What were you thinking? -By Harvey Mackay American novelist James Lane Allen had long been impressed by the ancient philosophy that a man becomes what he thinks, that a man’s character is the outward expression of his inward thoughts.

He had traced it back to the Upanishads, sacred literature of the Hindus: “Man becomes that of which he thinks.” He had found it eloquently expressed in the writings of Buddha: “The mind is everything, what you think you become,” as well as in the meditations of Marcus Aurelius: “Your life is what your thoughts make it.”

Or another favorite from Descartes: “I think, therefore I am.”

The same fundamental ideas are found in the writings of Confucius, Mohammed, Aristotle, Socrates and scores of others.

These scholars understood that such a seemingly basic function as thinking was one of the most significant activities that controlled their being. Thinking about thinking is a pretty abstract concept. Do great minds really think alike? Where do our thoughts really originate?

When I speak to corporate audiences, my first lesson is about how some of the best people spend their most productive time looking out the window. Every organization has people who can see the big picture.

They don’t get bogged down with a lot of meaningless meetings and paper shuffling.

They’re thinking. It’s the hardest, most valuable task any person performs without question.

Henry Ford once hired an efficiency expert to go through his plant. Ford directed him to find the nonproductive employees and, he said, “I will fire them!”

When the expert finished his evaluation, he reported to Ford that he was particularly concerned with one of his administrators.

“Every time I walked by, he was sitting with his feet propped up on the desk. The man never does a thing. I definitely think you should consider getting rid of him!”

Ford was curious to know who was using company time that way. Then the expert identified him, and Ford shook his head. “I can’t fire him. I pay that man to do nothing BUT think, and that’s what he’s doing.”

In other words, he was doing the thinking for others. When you think about it, that’s a pretty daunting task!

Thomas Edison said: “Five percent of the people think; 10 percent of the people think they think; and the other 85 percent would rather die than think.”

an element of truth to it. Sometimes it’s just easier to let others do the thinking and follow their lead.

If you are starting to wonder which category you fall in, remember, it’s not too late to adjust your thinking. Now is a perfect time to do a little spring cleaning and sweep out the clutter in your mind. Try these ideas: • Turn off the television. Limit your TV watching to concentrate better on what’s going on around you. Spend time with friends or just enjoy the quiet.

• Immerse yourself in something new. Read a wide variety of books and magazines, learn new words and use them, practice listening, find ways to stimulate your creativity – whether it’s crafts or painting or writing.

• Follow a regular routine. Just like any exercise program, you need to build mental exercises into your weekly or daily schedule to fully reap the benefits. Give yourself memorization challenges. Change your daily habits to get out of mental ruts (take a new route to work, for example).

Learn new music.

• Let go of anger. Complaining or venting anger to a sympathetic friend can sometimes make things worse. Don’t repress your emotions, but concentrate on constructive responses.

• De-stress. Find a time every day to back away from stress. For example, use the time when brushing your teeth at night to acknowledge anything negative experienced that day. Then focus on relaxation and peace.

• Check your attitude. We spend lots of time in the morning primping to look good for the day. But few of us take time to mentally prepare for the day. Ask yourself one question as you get ready to meet the world: What kind of employee, or parent, or friend, do I plan to be today?

if it was a bad year his garden wouldn’t have produced anyway and if it was a good year, he would be given extra vegetables by those that were tired of processing them. Hmm. I don’t remember anyone that grew zucchini in those days.

The hay racks are in need of some replacement boards so they will be ready to haul hay. The hay mower needs to have some cutting sections replaced and it has a rotten tire. It’s sickle needs to be sharpened by cranking the handle to turn the V-shaped grindstone. The hay loader has a need for some additional spring teeth to replace those that came off and it’s axles need to be repacked with grease. A messy job.

The corn is now 3 inches tall and the weeds are just beginning to peak out of the ground. Its time to begin cultivating corn.

This job was enjoyable. The fellow doing the cultivating is constantly treated to the fresh smell from the dirt he was disturbing and this is one of those jobs that show your progress. The freshly cultivated ground assumes a dark color and the corn is green and very noticeable as the weeds disappear.

After a good job of cultivating one actually wishes someone would visit the farm so that some excuse could be used to have them happen to see the eye-pleasing field you have just created. These excuses included having them accompany you to see how high the hay is getting or checking to see if there are any more gophers in the oat field. It’s not polite to brag, but it’s OK to let someone see a field one is proud of and allow them to make their own decision.

It is a source of pride to see what your land, your labor, your seed and the assistance of rain and the Good Lord can produce!

The corn and oats are in the ground and one would think that now would be a few days to take a break, but the fences around the cow pasture need some attention. There are rotten fence posts that need to be replaced, broken barb wire to be fixed and the sagging and leaning fence sections that were damaged by snow or those along the roads that were weighed down by snow from the winter road plowing. After all, the grass is growing and it’s better for the cattle to feed from the pasture than to eat hay from the hay-barn.

Now that the snow has gone, it’s time to cut some wood for next winter’s heating and cooking. We do not yet have a thing called a chain saw because they either require two guys to carry it, or if one guy can carry it, it is burdensome to carry the 40 pound piece of equipment in the woods. It is easier to carry a crosscut saw, an ax and a couple of mauls, plus they were much quieter. The wood is either left whole or cut in chord wood lengths. It is loaded on a farm wagon and stacked at a location where it will later be cut into stove wood lengths with a buzz saw located on the front of a tractor.

There are a few verbal messages from the lady of the house requesting that the garden be made ready for planting. The soil needs to be plowed and made ready similar to the field ground. However now the guys need to help with the hand seed planting.

The guys may think that they are at that time doing “women’s work,” but think back about the good garden food they had last winter and think that maybe it’s a good idea to make sure that there are lots of vegetable preserves again next winter.

Randall R. Bohnsack

Randall R. “Randy” Bohnsack, age 72 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2021 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rick Aubol officiating.

Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.

Monday at the church in Sauk Centre.

Mom faded into the setting sun as she slipped after she won her battle with dementia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 13 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre.

Theresa Ann Klemmer was born June 21, 1939 in Albany, Minnesota to Norbert and Evelyn (Bredeck) Klemmer. She attended Albany High School and graduated in 1957.

Theresa continued her education at Brainerd College with a degree in nursing. She met the love of her life, Frank Schmiesing, and on October 10, 1964, they were married. They lived in Anoka, Minnesota for two years after they were married, before they moved and built their life in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Theresa worked at St. Michael’s Hospital for 50 years, caring for many wonderful people, she loved her job and her coworkers.

Theresa retired from nursing in 2007, in hopes to go on trips with her brother-in-law, Tony, and to spend many cherished moments with her family. With heavy hearts, mom was weighted down with dementia, not being able to enjoy what she worked so hard for. She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers. She loved Christmas, making quilts, baking, gardening, cards, and watching her grandchildren in their sports. Most of all, doing things with her family and friends.

Randy worked as a machinist before and after farming. He farmed from 1974 to 1996. His most satisfying job was driving the school van for Sauk Centre Public Schools.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels in Sauk Centre. Randy enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren and being their M&M Grandpa.

Survivors include his wife, Jan Bohnsack of Sauk Centre; children, Barry (Heather) Bohnsack of Sauk Centre, Brady (Joy) Bohnsack of Villard, Crystal (David) Johanek of Zimmerman, and Katie (Duane) Ritter of Montevideo; ten grandchildren; sister, Karyn Preisen of Marystown; and brother, Richard (Barbara) Bohnsack of New Prague.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers-in-law, John “Jack” Preisen and Larry Bachman.

The hearts of her great-grandchildren, Gabe, LeAnna, Logan, Alex, Mackenzie, Dominic, Emmit, Ella, Addelyn, Grace, Everly, Jakob, Jaden, Timmy, Evelyn, Madison, Landen, Adley, and Maverick; siblings, Jean Marie (Dan) Sunder and Mark (Jackie) Klemmer; and many nieces and nephews, and in-laws.

“Mom you can hear the echo in the winds at night callin you back in time, back to Dad, in a place far away, where the water meets the sky. The thought of you and dad together again makes us smile. You are our tomorrow.”

Theresa is welcomed into glory by her husband, Frank and granddaughter, Abigail and two great angel babies; parents, Evelyn and Norbert Klemmer; sister, Kathy Atkinson; brother, Kenny Klemmer; and many other beloved family members.

“Mom, we missed you for who you were, loved you for who you had become with dementia, but know that you were so loved by all of us.”

Otto E. Petersen

Otto E. Petersen, age 85, passed away peacefully at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota, surrounded by his family during his final days.

Due to COVID-19, a private family Christian Burial will be held at Elmdale Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Thielman officiating.

Otto was born of February 3, 1936 in Swan River Township. He married Joan Remer in Brooten, Minnesota. Otto was an auto mechanic and started working for a Nash dealership and then Ford in Little Falls. Otto and Joan moved to Coon Rapids and worked at the Lincoln/Mercury dealer. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, camping and fishing.

After his retirement, he and Joan loaded up “Nano” and set out to see the United States, their favorite spot was Utah. Otto often said he never regretted retiring early to enjoy all that life had to offer. Later in life, Otto took up woodworking, building furniture, cabinets, and many shelves to share with family. He enjoyed taking out his grandchildren on many fishing adventures.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Joan Petersen; sons, Bruce (Karen, Paul (Brenda), and John (Mary); daughter, Julie (Michael) Baum; grandchildren, Tanya, Christopher, Emily, Dana, Ashley, Kayla, Amanda, Karl, and Hannah; 14 greatgrandchildren; and sisters, Leona Soltis, Selma Glende, and Myrna (Kenneth) Schrupp.

Dolores F. “Derry” Anderson, age 91 of Grey Eagle, formerly of Minnetonka, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Celebration of Derry’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2021 at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church. A private interment was held in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Celebration at the church.

Derry was a devoted wife, wonderful mother and faithful servant of the Lord. Derry and her husband, Wess served faithfully with the Billy Graham Telephone Ministry for several years. Betty Ann Zwilling Cichon

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m.

Monday, May 17, 2021 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Mayhew Lake for Betty Ann (Theisen) Zwilling Cichon, age 82, who passed away Sunday at her home near Upsala.

Rev. Thomas Knoblach will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m.

Sunday at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in Sauk Rapids and one hour prior to the services Monday at the church. Christian Mothers will pray at 7:30 p.m. followed by parish prayers, Sunday at the funeral home.

Born January 31, 1939 in Pearl Lake, Betty Ann was the youngest of Peter and Caroline (Keppers) Theisen’s 13 children. She married Francis “Sunny” Zwilling in Holy Cross Catholic Church at Pearl Lake on April 24, 1958. After Sunny’s passing in 1997, Betty again found love with Jerome “Jerry” Cichon and they married May 10, 2003 at Our Lady of Lourdes in Little Falls. Betty and Jerry lived their days together in Little Falls until his passing in 2011. Growing up, Betty was preparing herself to commit to God under solemn vows of poverty, chastity and obedience (nun). However, once Sunny returned from his military duty, she chose to serve God through the Sacrament of Marriage. The joy and mutual support of married love to serve others was a source of strength which enabled her to become a source of life, hope and comfort to their children and others.

Betty and Sunny were blessed with 13 children. Living and raising their children on a dairy farm, and later the poultry farm, Betty lived a full life as a devoted and hardworking wife, mother and homemaker. She was most passionate about her family and Catholic faith. Many of her most treasured moments were those spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-family.

Grounded by her desire to serve the Lord, she lived her faith and led by example. She

was a dedicated member of Christian Mothers and Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She served many years teaching CCD classes and enjoyed her numerous volunteer hours helping and serving others. In her spare time, she loved playing card games, dancing and playing checkers with her grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her children, Mary Beth Zwilling of Broken Arrow, OK, Lori Ann Zwilling of Little Falls, Mark and Mary Jo Zwilling of Foley, Chuck and Tammy Zwilling of Little Falls, Brian Zwilling of Bertha, Nita Zwilling of Rice, Janet Zwilling of Jenkins, Ken Zwilling & Jen Chandler of Roscoe, IL, Dan Zwilling of Sauk Rapids, Kari and Ervin Hartung of Burtrum, Jason and Jenny Zwilling of Sauk Rapids, Sarah and Jason Toenyan of Freeport, 43 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and brother Jim (Norlene) Theisen.

North Dakota State University freshman outside hitter, Alison Hinze, was named the Summit League’s Freshman of the Year for the 2020-21 volleyball season. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, John Dragseth, Norm Carlson, Jim Molitor, and Tony Maciej. Also present: reporter Tyler Ohmann.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, March 2, 2021 was reviewed. A motion was made by Norm Carlson to approve the minutes. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by John Dragseth to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Morrison County recycling and clean-up day grant was presented to the council. The recycling grant is for $1,696.00 and cleanup day grant is $375.00. Jim Molitor made a motion to sign the Morrison County Grants. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. City wide clean-up day is scheduled for Saturday, May 15th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

The Clerk reported to the council Clif Allen, city engineer, has sent in the DEED Grant application and has received notification that it was received.

The Swanville Lions are requesting a strong beer license for the Swanville Carnival on July 9-10-11, 2021. Jim Molitor made a motion to grant the Swanville Lions a strong beer license for July 9-10-11 for the fee of $80.00, the same as past years. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Lions would like to purchase 10 new bar stools for the park building. Norm Carlson made a motion to let the Lions purchase the new bar stools. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Bryan Allen is interested in getting city water and sewer to his property at the end of 4th Street East. Mayor Lange will get in contact with someone for an estimate on the cost and report back.

Mayor Lange reported there was a repair of a water line in front of the funeral home on DeGraff Avenue in the amount of $2850.00. There is cement work on the sidewalk that has to be done as well.

Council member Maciej stated there is an individual interested in purchasing 510 DeGraff and is inquiring if a modular home could be brought in when the old house is gone. It is stated in the ordinances there can be a modular home brought in, but it has to have a poured foundation.

It was reported the walking trail, to the south of the city, needs some work completed. There needs to be a new culvert put in and have dirt work on a portion of it. Tony Maciej stated he will oversee this project. Jim Molitor made a motion to have the trail work completed with a budget of not more than $2000.00. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

It was reported the new city lawn mower is in and will get picked up in April sometime.

Council member Dragseth reported there are too many vehicles on a resident’s property. The council will look at the ordinances and revisit at the next council meeting.

Reminder of the Local Board of Equalization meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 20 at 10:00 am.

The following claims were presented for payment.

Wayne Cymbaluk was in attendance to report on the erosion issue on the Southeast side of Bass Lake.

Ray had visited the area prior to the meeting. Wayne felt a little regrading of the shoulder would fix the problem. Ray will meet with Erv H. to see what should be done.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for April. Claims list included claims 3567-3575 for a total of $45,171.35, this includes the new CD at $25,000.00. Some discussion on whether or not to pay for culvert cleaning on 331st. Ray felt the Township shouldn’t pay for it. Mike made the motion to approve the claims as presented. Ray made the second. Motion carried. Mail included advertising, a donation request and a Mn Power flyer about an upcoming zoom meeting. Ray made the motion to have the CD put in for two years, for a better rate. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray spoke with several of the fire department members before he got information on the truck fire on Brakken Road. He received a check from the truck owners’ insurance company to cover cost to repair the tar road. He also checked with Midwest Asphalt for a bid on repairing holes in the road on Breezy Drive, 341st and Brakken Road. Mike made the motion to accept the Midwest Asphalt quote for $11,200.00 to repair the 5 spots Ray located. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried. Road check was done on April 10, several small projects were put on the list for 2021 along with some tree trimming. Ray made a motion to approve the list. Second by Mike. All in favor. Motion carried. Dust control- several checks have come in already. It was decided to do some work on the roads before considering more overall dust control. Discussion on the petition that Ron received for a culvert along Breezy Drive- Ray felt the Township should stay out of it. Ron felt it would be a good idea to at least listen in on the zoom meeting in July. Ron then reported on Knife River trucks hauling on Ascot and 335th. When he contacted the company, they stated the trucks were of legal limit.

Additional agenda item: The clerk presented the American Rescue Plan which states the Township will be receiving Federal dollars this summer. Not much information has been sent but a zoom meeting is scheduled for later this month.

Equalization meeting had no cases to discuss.

There were 20 good sales in the Township.

Beach mowing and dock installation was awarded to Hinman Lawn Service on a motion by Ray and second by Mike. All in favor. Motion carried.

Animal Bounty ordinance was discussed and a motion made by Ray and second by Mike to allow $1.00 for gopher feet and $50.00 for a beaver that is damaging the roadway. These must be presented to a board supervisor before payment can be made.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:35 pm.

Car Fire: April 23, 2021: A passerby had noticed smoke and flames in a field and thought it was an accident. The car was definitely on fire, but it turned out to be a stolen car from Holding Township that was taken on April 20. The thief attempted to dispose of any potential evidence in the car by using accelerants and then lighting it. The car was heavily damaged but not destroyed. An attempt at DNA collections was made. The car involved is a beige Oldsmobile Cutlass with a lighter colored hood. Anyone with information regarding the theft or subsequent arson, call our office at 320-259-3702.

May 1, 2021: Deputy Braegelmann was patrolling Millwood Township around 3:20 a.m. when he came across a toilet that had been shattered and left on the ground at the Cedar Lake Public access. The Minnesota DNR was advised as their crews are responsible for the clean-up.

Budget work continues as adjournment looms at Capitol As of this writing, (Monday morning), one week remains in the legislative session. It seems the big question every time we draw near to the finish line is, “Will we finish on time?”

This year is no different, with much left to be done in the final days. Tradition has the Legislature in session all weekend leading up to adjournment, including Sunday, and getting the final touches on the budget process before the mandatory finish at midnight on May 17.

No conference committees have completed their work and, in fact, the joint spending targets for each part of the overall budget have not yet been released. It was hoped these figures would be available last Friday, but were not. Until those numbers are given to the various conference committees, they cannot finish their work.

The governor announced last Friday a timeline for rolling back the remaining covid restrictions still in place. Capacity limits for outdoor events have now been lifted, and mask requirements will no longer be in place except at large venues with over 500 people in attendance. In addition, the mandatory closing time for bars and restaurants has been lifted. On May 28, all remaining distancing requirements will end, with the exception being large events which will still require masking.

No later than July 1, when 70 percent of Minnesotans have had at least one dose of the vaccination, all masking requirements will end. That date could be pushed up considerably earlier because at the current rate, we could hit that 70-percent mark in early June. It’s estimated that, as of last week, 59 percent of Minnesotans had received at least one dose.

Despite all the numbers looking positive, the governor still refuses to give up his emergency declaration. With those powers in place for 14 months already, I think most

would agree that the emergency has passed.

That could present a stumbling block in negotiations to complete the state budget on time. In addition, questions remain on whether the Legislature or the governor will control the $2.6 billion in COVID-19 aid coming to the state from Washington.

Anybody who has purchased a “twoby-four” piece of lumber lately knows what those prices have done. Dramatic increases in cost and have hit that market, in addition to others, as nearly all commodities have risen to multi-year highs. The price of lumber per thousand board feet is nearly five times higher today than just one year ago. Crude oil prices have risen from $20 per barrel last year to over $65 today. Farm commodities are doing the same, with the price of corn rising from just over $3 per bushel one year ago to over $7 today. Soybeans, which were around $8.50 last year are now priced over $15 per bushel.

My concern with all these huge price increases is that we are seeing a rise in consumer prices, and it’s going to continue. The increase in food prices could be substantial as these rising input costs are eventually passed on to the consumer. It’s getting very expensive to feed livestock, as the price of soybean meal and other costs continue going up. If they get too far out of balance, farmers may be forced to cut back on production.

We’ve been in these situations before, the last time was back in 2012 and ’13, and it took several years to re-balance the commodity markets. And with other parts of the world increasing their production, the result here in this country was seven years of low prices and a difficult farm economy.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2017 Honda Civic and I have let it sit for a month and when I tried to start it the engine did start but once it fired every warning light you can think of came on. The message center also is giving error messages. I tried to disconnect the battery for ten minutes then I restarted it and it did the same thing. I have heard that the wiring may have been eaten by a rodent since I am seeing evidence of a rodent under the hood. Is this possible.

- Nathan in Sachse, Texas It is possible that you have a rodent problem. Some cars are made with soybean-based wiring covering which we believe is for environmental reasons. It can be an attractive food source for rodents and an awfully expensive fix. We once had a van in our shop four times for repair to the same wire at the same spot because of a hungry mouse. Before you get too excited about the high costs involved with a wiring repair of this nature make sure to have your shop check the basics. It could be as simple as the

battery being low and when the car started it caused the computers to get disrupted which is causing all the lights. It may be as simple as resetting the computers and possibly charging the battery. A battery maintainer is a good idea when a car is parked for extended periods.

V8 engine LT1 powered car is extremely popular with customizers and cruisers. The engines are tough but at the age yours is it may have one or two issues with the cooling system. If you have not had a thermostat replaced in many years, or never then its time for one. This does not eliminate any other issues though. We would also perform an exhaust gas check of the cooling system to see if there are any exhaust gasses present in the coolant indicating that the engine has a head gasket leaking. If the gasket leaks or if the head is cracked the pressure can cause coolant to be pushed out of the system necessitating adding coolant often. These engines are simple compared to today’s dual overhead cam cars so if engine work does need to be done hopefully it will be at an affordable price and you can get this beauty back on the road.
