Patience really is a virtue -By Harvey Mackay There is a wonderful Japanese word, “nemawashi,” whose rough translation is to “prepare the roots.”

Although the word was borrowed from famously patient Japanese gardeners, every Japanese businessperson understands its meaning.

A gardener would use the term “nemawashi” to describe the infinite and time-consuming pains he or she might take in preparation for transplanting a small tree. The whole process might take several years – the time necessary to “prepare the roots” so that the little tree can stand the shock of being uprooted.

The same care and patience are necessary in many complex business tasks – opening a new market, educating customers to additional uses for your products, even training your most promising young employees. Not everything important can be accomplished in a day, a month or even a year.

“Nemawashi” can be a valuable reminder that patience and care can accomplish things that sheer managerial drive cannot.

I’m not exactly a patient person. I’m more of the persuasion that says “I want patience … AND I WANT IT RIGHT NOW.” In fact, I once went in to have my patience tested and found out I’m negative.

Like any entrepreneur who is starting a business, you want it to grow as fast as possible. You have big dreams and want to get there quickly. It was no different when I was building my envelope manufacturing company.

However, it’s important to avoid the “ready, fire, aim” process.

Jumping to hasty decision is not good.

A lack of patience can cloud judgment, diminish credibility and damage relationships.

Impatience can make you look desperate.

And yet, current culture has programmed us to expect immediate results.

I learned that in order to establish patience you have to create realistic expectations. Things seldom happen overnight. Often you need to take a slow, methodical approach to allow good things time to develop. The objective is to keep moving forward and acquire skills and knowledge as you progress.

Patience is a key element of success in the workplace, no matter what your role is. I understand the old adage that good things come to those who wait. That’s why patience often leads to happiness.

Remember the marshmallow test, which was created by psychologist Walter Mischel.

It is one of the most famous psychological experiments ever conducted. The test lets young children decide between an immediate reward (one marshmallow), or if they delay gratification, a larger reward (multiple marshmallows). Studies showed that children who were patient were much more successful later in life.

The wonderful thing about patience is that it goes a long way, and yet the more we use it, the more we have.

Patience also allows you to gather all the facts and make better decisions after seeing the big picture. Patience enables you to reach your goals by being consistent and persistent if you are dedicated and determined.

Patient people don’t allow their emotions to overwhelm them. They are in control and accept challenges without becoming rattled.

Patience is waiting without worrying.

But there’s another old saying that helps maintain a reasonable balance: “If you wait

until it’s perfect, you’ll be waiting a long time.”

Remain alert and know when it is time to make a decision and move forward.

Perhaps you are familiar with the lessons in patience one learns in growing bamboo. One of my favorite stories – and it’s true – is about a Chinese farmer who decided to plant bamboo seeds. He dug holes, planted the little seeds and then marked their locations. He faithfully watered those seeds every day. After a year, nothing had sprouted. He kept at it for another year, but still no sign of life.

Another year of watering and tending the marked locations, but no results. By then his neighbors were starting to question his devotion to the bare soil. Yet he persisted. So for a fourth year, he watered and watched. But not even one of those seeds showed any promise. He refused to give up. And for a fifth year, he tended those seeds as though they were his family.

One day, as he was watering his little plot, he saw a green sprout peeping through. It seemed to grow right before his eyes! It grew and grew, and within six weeks, those sprouts had reached 90 feet tall. His bamboo forest had come to fruition, all because his patience paid off.

Mackay’s Moral: A person without patience is like a car without brakes.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne

You personally know a gal that is a Dairy Princess, Beef Queen or Pork Queen and know that is an enviable position.

You remember not going to school during deer season and silo filling.

You know what we are talking about when we say knee high by the fourth of July, cutting posts or making wood.

You remember or still may wear a mackinaw, 4-buckles or long johns.

You talk about cruising main street on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon and it was actually 3 blocks long.

You know that rabbit ears are not necessarily on a rabbit.

You spoke about putting something in the “Frigidair” and getting something out of the “icebox”.

We use those terms because it was the language we grew up with. Anyone who has traveled out of the area will notice words that make no sense to us.

There are a few things we say that creates a curious or shocked look from someone not from this area.

Here are about a dozen examples.

We know what someone meant when they said sow sitting and slopping the hogs.

We use phrases such as batree, upnort, oofdah and holy buckets.

All soft drinks are called pop.

We threw down silage and threw up the oats bundles.

We know that combine is a big metal machine.

We still call a creek a crick.

We eat dinner at noon and supper in the evening.

We may still unthaw frozen meat.

You may previously have taken your girlfriend on a date shining deer or spearing suckers.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce No one likes bad weather! Snow, rain, wind, thunder, lightning, tornadoes etc. With weather, comes damage in many cases and it brings back memories from our childhood. I am different than most, I like storms. I am not a storm chaser, that would be like asking for trouble. The farmers also like… well at least they like rain, at the right time, in the right amounts.

In many situations in our personal life and even in our Christian life, we do not see personal growth unless we experience some kind of storm in our life. James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

The encouragement here is to work through the pain and suffering that trials bring. It is only when we get to the other side of that trial that we see the sunlight.

Also in James 5:7-8 “Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the au-

tumn and spring rains. 8You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.” God’s Word assures us that in this world we will have trials, but that we need to be perseverant in the Lord as we face them.

We also need to be assured that for all those who wait for Jesus return, will receive the gift of eternal life.

Donald P. “Don” Jacobs

Donald P. “Don” Jacobs, age 89 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, in Mesa, Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 16 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter officiating.

Inurnment will be Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Monday at the church.

Donald Paul Jacobs was born October 9, 1932, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Herbert and Bertha (Fischer) Jacobs. On April 18, 1956, Donald married Dorothy Beilke at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. After their marriage, the couple took over the family farm. He was a farmer and salesman all his life. Don and Dorothy enjoyed wintering in Arizona, dancing, and going on fishing trips.

Don also enjoyed flying his airplanes, showing his Model A cars, going to tractor pulls, and his clocks, his many clocks.

Don was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Sauk Centre Flying Club. He was the president of the Flying Club for many years and then served as airport manager.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Jacobs of Sauk Centre; children, Verna (Gerald) Boecker of Melrose, Bryon (Kathy) Jacobs of Sauk Centre, Leroy (Dottie) Jacobs of Sauk Centre, Cindy (Ronnie) Middendorf of Melrose, and Brenda (Mark) Leukam of Albany; 12 grandchildren and 25 greatgrandchildren; sisters, Luella (Erv) Alt of Grey Eagle and Marion Lunceford of Stanchfield.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-laws, Vera (Vern) Asmus and Esther (Ray) Neumann; brother and sister-in-law, Marvin (Joan) Jacobs; and brother-in-law, Jim Lunceford.

Serving as crucifer and urn bearer will be Kevin Jacobs.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Lucille A. Harms

Lucille A. Harms, age 78 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Friday, May 6, 2022 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, May 10 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany with Rev. Anthony Christoffels officiating. Interment was in Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Lucille Arlene Cleveland was born April 22, 1944 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Oscar and Bertha (Erickson) Cleveland. She was united in marriage to Cecil Harms on December 18, 1965 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Rembrandt, Iowa. Lucille helped Cecil on the farm but primarily focused on raising her family. She was an insurance agent in Slayton in 1990 and when the couple moved to St. Joseph in 1995, Lucille worked as a receptionist at Plaza Park Bank.

She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany. Lucille enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing and camping, playing 500 and solitaire card games, sewing, watching the Minnesota Vikings, playing games on her iPad, and loved visiting with friends and family, especially with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years, Cecil Harms of Melrose; children, Cal (Diane) Harms of Freeport, Kim (Ken) Burton of Cottonwood, and Cory Harms of Menomonie, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Justin (Samantha) Harms, Jeremy (Michaela) Harms, Bryan Harms, Micah (Wesley Isberner) Louwagie, Paul (Addy) Louwagie, Michael (Bailey) Louwagie, and Katie Louwagie; four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Jasper, Lucille, and Alexis; and many nieces and nephews.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Kari Lynn Harms; sisters and brother, Arla Anderson, Stella Gilbertson, Darlene Aronson, Arvilla Sassman, and John Cleveland.

Serving as casket bearers were Justin Harms, Jeremy Harms, Bryan Harms, Micah Louwagie, Paul Louwagie, and Michael Louwagie.

By Aliah Warga, Upsala High School Dear Editor, I am concerned about the climbing sex trafficking rates in Minnesota. In 2018-19, the rate was up 19% according to Reuters fact check. After covid some would say that the rates went down a bit, but I think that they were maintained and just not properly recorded due to covid.

Especially in Minnesota, law enforcement gets prepared for a surge 2 weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. In Minnesota, the time leading up to the Super Bowl is especially busy for human traffickers. Sarah Chandler, from MinnesotaMonthly, a news article based out of St. Paul and Minneapolis, says “Take any big event with a significant number of male attendees, throw in lots of cash and a party atmosphere, and you’re likely to see a surge.”

Luckily, in our rural area, we don't see this much, but it does happen. Some common lures that traffickers use are that some promise a better life, telling you that things will be better for them if you go with them, or that they can make you successful. Another one is that they promise an opportunity to make money.

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the April Junior High student of the month, ninth grade student Abby Morris. Abby is the daughter of Kim and John Lindemann and Justin Morris. When she has time for herself, she enjoys playing softball, going shopping and playing with her dog.

In the future she plans to go to college but is unsure of her career path just yet. Since sixth grade she has participated in softball. She also participated in volleyball and basketball. She

is very active in her church, and gives back by helping decorate at Christmas and assisting with Vacation Bible School. She is close with her grandmother and often assists her in the garden.

Abby is a student that is consistently on the A Honor Roll. Her favorite thing about school is seeing her friends and math and art classes. Her advice to other students is that “it’s easier to get your work done than get punishments for not doing so.”

I can tell you two are taking this situation very seriously. But I mean, it’s not like He needs the money, you know? Tithing isn’t about making a deposit into God’s bank account, or building up spiritual brownie points. It isn’t a salvation issue, either. It’s all about changing our hearts and our minds. It’s about being a little less selfish, and a little more Christ-like. I believe it makes God smile when we put other people’s needs ahead of our own wants.

I have no problem with giving to responsible charitable organizations, too, but when it comes to tithing, I’m not sure a generic charity is the answer.

My wife and I have had times in our lives when we changed churches, and in the periods when we didn’t have a home church, we’d write out the checks just like normal, but leave the “pay to the order of” portion blank. That way, the money was already accounted for in our minds and in our checkbook. Then, when we found a place that really spoke to us, we’d complete the checks and give them to that church.

Dear Motor Medics, I’m thinking about purchasing a “green” vehicle, either a Hybrid or totally electric design but I don’t know where to begin. I’ll be using this as a second car but hope to use it as much as possible and I will likely purchase one that is new or less than a year old. Can you help me understand some of the differences between the two and give me ideas on what to consider?

--Gary in Lincoln, Nebraska Dear Gary, The first thing to consider when purchasing either one is how it will be used. As a second car you have the luxury of using your other car for long trips. With the Hybrid this would not be a problem but with a fully electric car this would be a showstopper. Hybrid Vehicles all have an internal combustion engine combined with an electric motor that share the load in part to save fuel while Electric Vehicles must be recharged when exhausted. If the Hybrid runs low on electricity it can rely on the engine, which if low on fuel can easily be refilled at the gas station. If you run out of juice on the Electric Vehicle it means a tow. Before purchasing either model we suggest you spend considerable time researching both options. There are many people who swear by their “green” vehicles and would never go back to a conventional car, others swear at them. Research is crucial.

-Glenna in Illinois Dear Glenna, There is a major difference in lighting systems between your two vehicles. The van uses headlight technology that has been used since the Model T; it has been refined a bit with better reflectors and bulbs but still has limits.

The Cadillac uses H.I.D lamps. High intensity discharge comprised of special ballasts and bulbs, and a focusing projector lens to send the high-power light to the road immediately in front of you and not into oncoming vehicles eyes. You can upgrade to a better conventional bulb in the van but legally you can’t use H.I.D bulbs without the projector type lens because it will blind other drivers. Aftermarket projector lenses are available for some vehicles but not the van as far as we know.

Swanville City • April 5, 2022 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Jim Molitor, John Dragseth, and Norm Carlson. Absent: Sandy Lange and Tony Maciej. Also present: Clif Allen, Sarah Brunsvold, and reporter Terry Lehrke. Jim Molitor served as acting Mayor.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, March 8, 2022 were reviewed. A motion was made by John Dragseth to approve the minutes. Norm Carlson seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by John Dragseth and seconded by Norm Carlson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Clif Allen, city engineer, was present with Sarah Brunsvold to go over the up dated plans on the water storage tank and wells. As far as funding for the project, the DEED application has been submitted and Rural Development has not yet determined and secured a dollar amount for the project. The historical review was not completed yet because of weather. An additional testimony is expected to be scheduled for the State Bonding Bill.

The Long Prairie Sanitation Refuse and Recycling Contract will expire May 31, 2022. LPS sent a letter to council requesting the city extend the current contract for an additional two years at the same rates. However, because of fuel prices, a fuel surcharge would be added to the contract.

After discussion, John Dragseth made a motion to extend the Long Prairie Sanitation contract for an additional 2 years with the fuel surcharge added to the contract. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The city clerk gave a report of the break-in that occurred in the Swanville Center and City Office on March 22. A window was broken, the back door was pried open of the Center and the city office door was pried open. A filing cabinet was pried open, the AED machine was taken out, the senior collecting box broken and $380.00 taken from the city payments. The Morrison County Sherriff’s Office was called and assessed the break-in. Insurance is expected to cover the damages.

City wide clean-up day is set for Saturday, May 7, 2022 starting at 9am to 11:00am by the park.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Norm Carlson made a motion to approve the claims. John Dragseth seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at 7:00 pm in the Swanville Center.

by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Council Members Lana Bartells, Wendy Rene, and Mitch Lange. Absent: Crystal Benson Staff present: First Response Vice President Danielle Haus, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, and City Clerk-Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Lange moved to approve the regular city council meeting minutes from April 4, 2022, 2nd by Rene. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Bartells moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Lange.

Motion carried unanimously.

Presentations: 2021 Audit – Jon Archer City Auditor Jon Archer presented Schlenner Wenner’s findings for the 2021 City Audit. Mitch Lange moved to accept the Audit Report from Schlenner Wenner, 2nd by Rene. Motion carried unanimously.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels as well as the various tasks done throughout the City.

Tschida explained they received three applications for the part time public works position.

Bartells moved to hire Sylvester Tschida as the new part time public works maintenance worker, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Rene moved to hire Mike Kiley as the emergency backup public works position, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Tschida reviewed the quote to repair the leaking manholes. Rene moved to contract with Thul Specialty Contracting to rehabilitate the listed manholes, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Tschida shared the waterline issue that is connecting to the new Senior Living facility. Lange moved to extending the water service to go past Walnut to be accessible for future developments, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Community Center Treasurer Al Donat Al Donat, Community Center Treasurer, explained the discoveries they received when they had an energy audit done on the Community Center. He is requesting sealing the ductwork in the ceiling and insulation be added in the attic to the lower the cost of heating and cooling. Bartells moved to have Donat get quotes for insulating the Community Center and to go with the best quote upon the approval of the Mayor, 2nd by Rene.

Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: Danielle Haus updated the council on the Fire Department’s activities including a controlled burn scheduled for May 14. The team is also looking at recruiting new members. Burning restrictions are in place, please get a permit from Frank Koopmeiners or other fire warden before you burn.

Notice is hereby given this 15th day of May, 2022, pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, Section 18.83, Subdivision 1 (2009), that all persons in Stearns County, Minnesota, shall control or eradicate all noxious weeds on land they occupy or are required to maintain. Control or eradication may be accomplished by any lawful method, but the method(s) applied may need to be repeated in order to prevent the spread of viable noxious weed seeds and other propagating parts to other lands. Failure to comply with the general notice may mean that an individual notice, Minnesota Statutes, Section 18.83, Subdivision 2 (2009), will be issued. An individual notice may be appealed within three working days of receipt to the appeal committee in the county where the land is located. Failure to comply with an individual notice will mean that the inspector having jurisdiction may either hire the work done or seek a misdemeanor charge against the person(s) who failed to comply. If the work is hired by the county inspector, the cost can be placed as a tax upon the land and collected as other real estate taxes are collected. You may obtain a list of the plants that are designated as noxious weeds and the members of the appeal committee from your County Agricultural Inspector or County. You can also obtain this information from your Local Weed Inspectors. Local Weed Inspectors include the township supervisors, city mayors or their appointed assistants. Vice President Danielle Haus reported the calls for April. Last week they hosted the mock car crash which was very successful. They will be participating in the control burn with the Fire Department. They are also working on the annual Memorial Day Service meal on Monday, May 30 at the Rec Building.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the May calendar and reported on the projects worked on in April.

Stevens informed the Council of the five applications received for her replacement. Rene moved to hire Jane Popp as the new City Clerk with a 90-day probationary period, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Planning Commission: Marty shared that they welcomed Mark Gilles to the Planning Commission; now all seats are filled.

Two new building permits were approved.

The Planning Commission is also working on long-term planning for future development in the city.

Lange moved to hold a public hearing to discuss the Conditional Use Permit including a variance for the size of their lot and the placement of the coop on the property for up to 10 chickens at 204 Borgstrom on or after 7:20 pm, 2nd by Rene.

Motion carried unanimously.

Unfinished Business: New Well Location Staff will create a goal plan to find a new well location.

New Business: Park Bathrooms The park bathrooms quotes were reviewed.

Lange moved to contract with Kramer Construction, Freeport Electric and Rippling Plumbing to build new bathrooms in the city park, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Frank Koopmeiners Resignation: Bartells moved to accept Frank Koopmeiners’ verbal resignation as of March 31, 2022, with regrets, 2nd

by Rene. Motion carried unanimously.

Paving West Street and 3rd Avenue: Johnson reviewed the quote from Central Minnesota Paving to resurface West Street and 3rd Avenue.

Council directed Johnson to get a quote from Knife River who will also be paving Walnut Avenue.

Pickleball Club Donation for New Chairs in the Rec Building Rene moved to approve resolution 5-2-20221, accepting $1,000.00 from the Pickleball Club to purchase new chairs for the Rec Building, 2nd

by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Acknowledgements: Appreciation to the Pickleball Club for donation $1,000.00 for new chairs in the Rec Building. Your generosity is amazing.

April 20, 2022: Responded to a field in the area of River St. and 165th Ave. for the report of a tractor on fire in Holding Township.

Upon arrival the tractor was fully engulfed.

The owner said he had been working in the field when he stopped the tractor due to an odd smell. When he got out to see what might be wrong, he saw flames and called 911. The Holdingford Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. The tractor was a total loss.

April 22, 2022: Responded to the report of a fish house fire in New Munich. The fish house was parked next to a garage at a residence in the 400 block of Western St. An observant neighbor was the first to notice the issue.

He observed smoke coming from a window of the fish house and walked over to see what the issue was. Through that window he could see flames and immediately called 911, and also tried to alert anyone inside the residence at this location. The New Munich Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. The homeowner where the fish house was parked was able to contact the owner of the fish house.

He had been there that morning between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. He had plugged in a couple of batteries to charge them. It was possible when he left that he may not have unplugged them. While the fish house was not a total loss, it did suffer some significant damage.

May 5, 2022: At 11:20 PM, the Stearns County Emergency Communication Center received a call about a single-vehicle rollover in which the driver had been ejected. It was reported that the rollover had occurred on County Road 10 and 390th Street in Krain Township.

Upon arrival, Stearns County Sheriff’s Deputies located a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire resting on its passenger side, approximately 50 yards into a field. The driver of the Pontiac, Caleb Albritton, 19, of Avon, had been traveling northbound on County Road 10 when his

vehicle left the roadway, hit a road approach, and became airborne before landing and rolling onto its passenger side. Albritton had been ejected from the vehicle but was able to flag down a passerby. He was treated by Albany Rescue and Melrose Ambulance before being transported by Life Link to the St. Cloud Hospital. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Albany Fire and Rescue, Melrose Area Ambulance, and Life Link III. May 7, 2022: At approximately 2:33 p.m., received a call about a single-vehicle rollover with injuries at the location of 25123 County Road 30 in Albany Township. It was reported that the driver was unconscious.

Upon arrival at the scene deputies located the driver and sole occupant of the 2014 GMC Yukon, Shawn Solum, 39, of Osakis, to be alert and talking. It appeared that the Yukon had left the roadway and struck a driveway approach causing the vehicle to flip. The vehicle came to a rest right side up. Solum was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it is believed alcohol may have been a factor in causing the crash.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Albany Fire and Rescue and Melrose Ambulance.
