Be careful when offering criticism -By Harvey Mackay When you offer criticism, be aware of whom you are criticizing and how they might receive it.

Case in point: A number of years ago, my son David was entering his senior year at Stanford University.

He thought it might be fun to spend his last college summer freewheeling in San Francisco, working five or six shifts a week as a waiter. He figured he would earn enough money to really enjoy his leisure hours. He was pretty driven and interviewed at a swanky brand new restaurant called Stars, being opened by renowned chef Jeremiah Tower. It was scheduled to open three weeks later. David figured that what he lacked in experience, he could make up in enthusiasm and education. He got the job and started training a few days later surrounded by experienced, sophisticated servers twice his age with resumes at some of the best restaurants in the country.

After three weeks of intensive training, the restaurant opened.

Things were going great and David was rewarded with generous tips. One night alone, he made more than a month’s rent. That same night the headwaiter pointed out a classic service error to my son: failing to clear unused glassware. If someone wasn’t drinking wine or water, their glasses should be removed from the table. David told me this was like finding a needle in a haystack, considering that each place setting had three glasses even before anyone sat down – add cocktails to that and a table of six would start out with 24 crystal glasses.

After the restaurant was open to the public for a week or so, my wife and I came to town and decided to check out the new restaurant and let David experience it from the other side, as a customer. He would have a chance to sample some of the food, assess the service and, in turn, become a better server himself.

My wife, Carol Ann, who has her master’s in cooking and a doctorate in ordering, got the ball rolling with five questions regarding the menu selections.

It seemed like we ordered almost everything on the menu. Carol Ann pointed out to us that the dressing on the salad was particularly oily, much less vinegar than normal vinaigrette. Then when the entrees came, the food was not very hot. It was tepid at best. Everything was edible, but not spectacular. My veal stew was particularly bland.

The next day at work, David went right up to Jeremiah Tower and described the little experiment he’d done. First off, David asked him about the “oily salad dressing.” The chef explained that he thought that a heavy vinegar dressing was too hard on the palate, too early in the meal, so he created a dressing that was “soft on the palate.”

“Great, great!” David said, “This will be very helpful to know as a front waiter.”

As he turned to leave, David continued, “One more thing … The food wasn’t very hot. Are you concerned that people might burn their tongues?”

“What?” exclaimed Tower. “The food should be piping hot, and it’s your job as a server to get it out there quickly!”

“Yes, sir, you got it. I will,” David said. So now he’s thinking he is two for two in valuable, practical observations.

The head chef again turned to leave, but David stopped him in his tracks.

“Oh, one more thing. I wanted to talk to you about the veal stew … I found it somewhat bland.” At this point, Tower looked David in the eye, then spun on his Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Mothers and Grandmas Mothers

actually were very influential in creating “us”.

Not only did they develop us in their own bodies and deliver us into the world, but they were very influential in the development of our personalities or “US”.

Our mothers usually are a part of our earliest memories. They were there when we said our first word. They were there when we took our first steps.

They worked very hard to teach us how to eat our first meals. They probably were the ones who changed our diapers and taught us how and where to go “potty.”

They washed our dirty faces and our homemade clothes. They were our doctor and nurse.

During our formative years we learned that there were certain rules and limitations that were to definitely be observed. You don’t walk in wet grass or the cow-yard wearing your Sunday shoes. You better have your Sunday shoes polished and your good clothes on when it was time to get in the car and head for church. You didn’t jump in the wet muddy holes with your shoes on.

You didn’t smart-off or sass back to your parents, teachers or other adults. You better be at the table when the meal was ready to eat. You didn’t pick your nose at the supper table or when anyone was watching. You better brush your teeth every day. Every family had different rules to live by, but they all were similar in many ways.

Since the mother usually spent more time with the child than anyone else, her ideas, philosophies and beliefs were accepted by a young child as “truth.” Her feelings about people, laws, authorities, methods and acceptable standards were slowly made part of the child’s thinking.

These ingrained beliefs remained with the child for their entire life, although as

the child grew into adulthood, they began to establish their own belief system. A child who grew up and became a mother would have some additional beliefs and understandings to pass on to their child.

This was caused by the mother’s life experiences and environment.

Grandmas were usually a special treat for her grandchild. They are more able to just love the child without as many boundaries. They have and give more personal time to the child along with special treats not allowed at the child’s home. They are able to “spoil the kids and then send them home.” A good arrangement, since after spending some time with the young kids, Grandmas again aware of why it’s best that young people have kids One thing I especially remember was riding in the car on the way to town or church and my mother wrapping her arm around my head, taking out her handkerchief, licking it and removing the sleep from my eyes. The handkerchief had a nice smell of perfume, but digging in my eyes was not so nice.

One memory of Grandma was in regard to the removal of a loose tooth.

Evidently allowing the child to have a loose tooth in their mouth could cause the child to choke on it or swallow it.

Anyway, I learned after the removal of my first tooth, don’t let Grandma know you have a loose tooth. Her removal method was to put you in a head-lock, take a pliers, tell you to open your mouth and pull the tooth out. Efficient, but not pleasant.

Have a great Mother’s Day and give yourself a little pat on the back when you happen to notice your kids saying to their kids some of the same phrases you said to them when they were growing up. Ya, they were actually listening!

heels and marched into the kitchen.

David’s shift that night went well – 20 percent in tips from seemingly very satisfied customers. At the end of the night, as he was tallying up his earnings, the headwaiter came up to him and mentioned that twice that evening he had failed to clear glassware. He was fired, effective immediately.

David was crushed. He had poured his heart into this job. As he was walking to the cable car he heard a voice shout out his name. He turned around to see the headwaiter, jogging up to him. He looked upset and he quietly said, “David, it wasn’t the glassware. Next time, just be careful what you say to the head chef.”

Mackay’s Moral: Never tell a mother her baby is ugly.

At the annual University of Jamestown Honor’s Convocation, held Thursday, April 20, 2017, Abby Silvers of Avon, was inducted into the Beta Beta Beta Honor Society.

Beta Beta Beta is a National Biological Honor Society. To be eligible for membership, students must have completed three biology courses, including at least one beyond the introductory level, with GPA of 3.00 or higher in all biology courses.

Mario’s fitness classes at The Firm Fitness Club in Minneapolis and then Equinox Fitness Club in Miami, Florida developed long waiting lists of enthusiastic students.

He trained everyone from professional athletes to rehabilitation patients. He spent thousands of hours in intimate conversations with those seeking fitness guidance. One of his many fitness clients stated “I cherished him as a one of a kind friend. I will miss his infectious smile, and our smart engaging talks about everything from state of the world to the latest fitness techniques. He was an exceptional teacher who changed peoples lives for the better.” In 2012 he met the love of his life, Carolina Eckardt, originally from Columbia. They lived together in South Beach in a high-rise condo overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, just blocks away from the beach they loved.

Mario will be dearly missed by his family, friends, fitness trainers he mentored and managed, and legions of students. He is survived by Carolina Eckardt, father Theophanis C. Hortis (formerly from Lefkas Greece) and step-mother Linda Hortis; mother Loretta A. Trulson and step-father Kent K. Trulson; older brother Alexander “Tyke” Hortis and younger step-sister Angela E. (Angie) Trulson; and many uncles, aunts, and cousins from Minnesota and thoroughout United States, Greece, and Canada. Among his many personal friends, he was especially close to David W. Gans, Bret Gustafson, and Howard Fishman. Even in death, Mario’s superb physical condition enabled him to donate organs to many needy recipients.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held in St. Cloud. The traditional Orthodox Faith 40th day Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 20th, at 11:00 A.M. at the Holy Myrrhbearers Orthodox Church, 601 7th Ave. South, St. Cloud, Minnesota, to be followed by a fellowship luncheon in celebration of Mario’s life. Charitable donations are preferred in the form of checks to the Marios Hortis Memorial Scholarship Fund at Saint John’s University, Saint John’s University, P.O. M a r i o s Nicolas Hortis, an inspiring and beloved Health Fitness Trainer and Manager, age 42, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017 in Miami, Florida due to gun shot wounds suffered at his place of work by a disgruntled exemployee.

Mario was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 19, 1974 and grew up in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He attended Montessori and Campus Lab elementary schools, South Jr High and St. Cloud Technical High School where he was the cocaptain of the soccer team his senior year.

In 1997 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, majoring in economics, from Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. In his youth he loved baseball, soccer, karate, fishing, deer hunting, chess, collecting sports cards, and watching his favorite professional sports teams. Bridges Offers Job Database in Long Prairie Online tool helps high school students find their first job A different kind of train will be pulling into town soon, a jobs train. The Bridges Career Academies & Workplace Connection is launching a new program to help students become a part of the workforce and find a summer job. The Jobs Train offers an easy-to-use database of jobs just for high schoolers. Students simply visit BridgesConnection.org/Jobs to search and filter jobs by town or area of interest.

The new Jobs Train searchable database is the only one in the region with job postings exclusively for high school students, 18 or younger.

Interested businesses should just find the “Add a Job Posting” link on the right column of the Career Depot site, and complete and submit the online form to post their job listings for free.

“There are lots of websites available with jobs,” said Mary Gottsch, Director of the Bridges Workplace Connection. “But none are for students, for first-time job seekers.”

Since job availabilities change frequently and high schoolers are social media savvy, Bridges developed an app that can be downloaded to a mobile device or

tablet for quick, easy access to the jobs listings. Or, to get immediate notifications of jobs as they are posted, students can “like” the Bridges Workplace Connection Facebook page.

The Jobs Train is just one feature of the Career Depot, a web portal, created

by Bridges Workplace Connection. The Career Depot is a collection of resources to help students explore careers, as well as find tips on how to complete applications, prepare for an interview, and more.

Through classroom projects and extracurricular activities, area teachers, coaches, and staff will be encouraging students to use the Career Depot tools to explore future careers.

It’s the integration into the academics that makes this program unique.

“We have such a strong relationship with area high schools,” said Gottsch.

“Teachers know the Bridges program offers students a powerful connection to the business community. Helping the two connect to find workers only seemed natural.”

Beaty was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Wensman on June 4, 2006; parents; brothers, Melvin and Harold Jacobs; sister, Elaine Gerads; and her beloved dogs, Cody and Charlie.

Bridges continued from page 4 are prepared teach student workers about customer service, what it means to be dependable and responsible, and offer an acceptable wage. In return, students should be prepared to learn, show up for work on time and be open to new ways of thinking.

“A first job won’t be your only job,” added Gottsch. “Students need to realize that every job they have helps teach them about responsibilities they will need later. And sometimes, summer jobs can also move you toward or away from a future career.”

To highlight this fact, Bridges developed a series of videos showcasing local professionals as they talk about their first job. Find a link to these “My First Job” videos at BridgesConnection.org/Jobs.

There is also a series of “I Got A Job” videos that feature local students explaining how they landed their first job, and what they’ve learned from their work experiences.

The Career Depot is a 2-year pilot project funded by the Otto Bremer Foundation, the Region Five Development Commission and MicroNet. The program has been designed with the capacity for replication and expansion into other markets.

Nisswa-based MicroNet developed the software that drives the job search database. It’s a modified design of ChamberMaster, one of the core products from MicroNet. The Career Depot site also has capability to list internship opportunities, information on job shadows, apprenticeships and even scholarship information.

Bridges envisions the Career Depot as evolving in to the one-stop-shop for all

things career-related pertaining to high school students.

The Career Depot is the latest project from the Bridges Workplace Connection. The Bridges Workplace Connection program offers job shadows, business tours, speakers in the classrooms, career videos and the annual career exploration day to showcase career options that are available in the Brainerd Lakes Area and better integrate work-based learning between schools and business.

Bridges other component, Career Academies offer a sequence of courses focusing on career pathways. Courses are project based with hands-on learning activities. The courses combine technical, academic and work-skills related to a specific career. Students have practical learning opportunities throughout the courses that transfer to activities beyond the school day.

All of these Bridges efforts are designed to help the next generation workforce become better prepared to meet the demands of local employers, especially in careers that are high-wage, high-skill and high-growth.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, Our son is 13, and he wants to give half the money he received for his birthday to the nursery at our church. They need new baby toys and things like that. Should we let him give that much, or should we tell him that maybe 25 percent is enough?

-Kyle Dear Kyle, I hope you’re proud of this kid.

He’s got a good heart, and it’s probably a reflection of the way his mom and dad are raising him. I like this a lot.

I would very gently, and without any commanding or control verbiage, use some examples from the Bible when talking to him. There are several things to be learned about money from Scripture, and the concepts of generosity and giving are in there. There’s also a verse that says we need to take care of our own households first. Another one says in the house of the wise are stores of food and oil.

We need to do all of these things with money — in balance. Thoughtfully and prayerfully decide what your giving amount will be, so that you don’t destroy your ability to save and do other important things. Talk to him about these concepts, then ask him to wait two or three days and think about his decision.

If he comes back and says he still wants to give half of it, I would encourage him to do so. But slow things down a little, and make sure this isn’t a knee-jerk reaction. You need to be a wise giver, not an impulsive giver!

This feels a little unethical to me. What are your thoughts?

-Jennifer Dear Jennifer, There’s a good reason this idea feels unethical to you — it is unethical! Would a good friend, a smart friend, encourage you to do something as dishonorable as not pay a bill you’re morally and legally obligated to pay? I don’t think so.

If you’re able to pay your bills, you pay your bills. It’s as simple as that.

Now, if you honestly can’t pay the bill, and you have to settle upon a mutually agreed upon amount with the creditor or collector, then it’s okay at that point to try and reach a settlement.

Otherwise, it’s a simple question of ethics. Pay the bill!

Kresha Passes Foster Care Legislation Recentyl, the Minnesota House of Representatives approved Rep. Ron Kresha’s, R-Little Falls, foster care bill (HF1702) on a unanimous vote of 130-0.

The bill, called McKenna’s Law, allows children who are over ten years old and in foster care to be appointed counsel in juvenile proceedings.

“Children in foster care are at a very vulnerable point in their young lives, and deserve their own legal representation,” said Kresha. “When digging into this issue, we found a number of instances where juveniles in foster care were facing legal challenges on their own, without any

legal council whatsoever. That can’t happen.”

A main driver of the legislation and inspiration for the bill’s title was 12-yearold McKenna Ahrenholz who faced a situation where she fought for a year to receive legal representation.

“McKenna’s heartbreaking story shows us that we need this legislation,” said Kresha. “Here we have an abused, neglected child who should have an objective legal voice to help them through this difficult system.”

Now passed by the House, the bill heads to the Senate.

Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for March. Claims list included 9 claims 3054-3062 for a total of $21,161.37. Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second. Motion carried unanimously. Mail included advertising, an e-mail about garbage pick up and a flyer on Asphalt repair.

Road and Bridge Report: Discussion on whether or not needed to publish notice for upcoming tar projects and repairs. If the cost is likely to be over $100,000, it needs to be published. The Board did not open the bids that had already been received, but will publish the notice, and open the bids at the June 5 meeting. During the road check it was discovered that the tar roads would need

noxious weeds to watch for are Buckthorn and the new one that came into southern Minnesota from Iowa. Mary Ann reported on the equalization meetingtwo parcels up for discussion, The Board recommended no changes for either parcel.

Beach maintenance: only one bid was received for mowing and dock installation and removal. Ray made the motion to hire Hinman Lawn Service for the 2017 season. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Ray made the motion to agree to be part of the Cooperative Construction Agreement for Improvements to Angler Drive in 2019 along with Birchdale Township and Todd County. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Do You Have A Plan? - By John Young A business plan is probably one of the most boring parts of a small business start up. Yet, it is one of the most needed and beneficial tools in getting your business up and running successfully.

A business plan is basically a document that gives you the who, what, where, when and why of operating a business.

This can be a simple one page plan or it could be a much larger document with pages of information about how the business will be run.

As a small business owner, a business plan really becomes a formal way to think through your business and it gives you some idea on what you should be doing and where to put your time and money focus.

Can you operate your business without one? Well, yes, you can. You will find it much easier to know when you are on track, and when you are off track with a simple but well written business plan.

If you are looking for financing for your business start up or expansion, a business plan is part of what you will need to provide the lender to show you know what you are going to be doing.

So, what does a business plan consist of? Really, it is just a flow of the thought process for running your business. Think of the business plan as an outline to start with and add things in as you go along.

A business plan can be modified as your business grows or as situations dictate.

There are many resources online along with books on this topic that will go into great depths on writing your business plan.

My suggestion is to not get overwhelmed at first. Start with a simple thought process business plan and work up to more indepth as needed.

For a simple one page, here are some key components you should cover: 1. Identify Customers: Who are you going to be selling to? Identify the type of person who would buy from your business in as great of detail as you can. This part helps tremendously when you get to your advertising and marketing if you have defined your ideal customers.

2. USP Unique Selling Proposition: What are you offering and why are

you different? You might have a new spin on something. You might be offering something new. You might be offering better service. You need to know what makes buying from you different than buying from your competitors.

3. Selling What And How Much: What are you going to be selling to your ideal customer? For businesses with fewer items for sale, you would also look at the selling price for the main items or services you would be selling.

4. Customer Prospecting, Engagement and Retaining: How are you going to find and keep your customers. If you are only doing a one time sale, then customer retention isn’t that important. Most businesses survive on their ability to find and retain customers. This is the starting point of your marketing plan.

So far these few steps in this one page plan could save many businesses a lot of money by defining the client side and sales side enough to help guide the advertising investments properly.

5. Income Projections: This part looks at number of potential sales, potential income, methods of payments, and potential to grow income over the next 1, 2 and 5 years.

6. Business Resources: What resources do you require to function? These can include physical, human, financial and intellectual resources.

7. Key Activities: Ask yourself what activities need to take place in order to deliver to your customers? Focus on the activities that are closely connected to what the customer is buying over more mundane day to day tasks that are not directly connected with sales and delivery of service.

8. Networking Circle: Networking is a huge part of today business world. Even small town businesses need to think about networking. Who or where will you make time each week/month/quarter to network with others to help boost and grow your business?

9. Cost Structure: Look at fixed and variable costs so that you can see what can be improved upon as your business grows.

Some expenses are short term and some are ongoing. Look at ALL expenses involved with running your business and set your pricing of your offerings accordingly while allowing for a profit for your labor.

There are nine areas that would help you think your way through a plan for your business. It isn’t the most exciting process, but it is a critical process to think through the who, what, when, where, and why of running your small business.

May 1, 2017: At 23:20 Kendra Brown of Long Prairie was traveling North on County Road 5 in Long Prairie Township when she swerved to miss a deer in the roadway causing her vehicle to go into the ditch.

The vehicle sustained minor damage and Brown was uninjured in the incident.

May 6, 2017: At 09:44 TCSO received a call of an attempted burglary at an address on Alum Trail in Birchdale TWP Sect. 26.

The property owner reports that on the night of April 26th into the morning on April 27th, suspects forced entry into an unattached garage at the residence. No items are believed to be missing at this time. The incident is under investigation. If you have information about this incident, please call the TCSO at 1-800-794-5733.

May 8, 2017: At 09:44 TCSO received a call of a theft from the address of 18674 County 10, rural Long Prairie. 60 year old James Larson called to report that an ATV style pull behind disc was stolen from his property. Through the investigation, it was determined that 58 year old David Larson who resides at 18670 County 10, rural Long Prairie, did not steal the disc. David had permission to use the disc from the owner of the disc. The incident is no longer being investigated and is determined to be a civil issue between family members.

May 8, 2017: At 22:54 Kailey Ness of Farwell was traveling eastbound on County 96 when she lost control and rolled her 2006 Chevy Cobalt. Ness was not injured and the vehicle sustained minor damage. The Long Prairie Fire Dept. assisted in extricating Ness from the vehicle.

By Melissa Warhol, DNR safety and risk supervisor Q: I’m camping over Memorial Day weekend, and I want to avoid exposure to tick-borne diseases. How can I prevent tick bites?

A: Disease-carrying deer ticks are most active during snow free periods of the year, so it’s important to take precautions when enjoying the outdoors. Highrisk areas include hardwood forests, woody/brushy areas and long grass. Here are some tips to prevent tick bites: Walk in the center of trails to avoid picking up ticks from grass and brush.

Wear light-colored clothing so ticks will be more visible. Check and re-check yourself throughout the day.

Create a barrier to ticks by tucking your pant legs into socks or boots, and wearing a long-sleeved shirt tucked into your pants.

Use a repellent containing DEET or permethrin, and carefully follow the

directions on the container. Permethrin-treated clothing is also available at many sporting goods stores.

The best defense after being outdoors in tick habitat, is to do a complete body check, shower and vigorously towel dry.

Wash your clothes immediately as to not spread any ticks.

Pets are most likely the ones who will carry a tick indoors. Check your pets for ticks each time they’ve been outdoors.

If you find an attached tick the prompt removal is important. If possible use a pair of tweezers to grasp the tick by the head. Grasp tick close to the skin, pull the tick outward slowly, gently and steadily, use antiseptic on the bite. Avoid remedies like Vaseline, nail polish remover or burning matches, they are not a safe or effective way to remove ticks.
