The Sleep Doctor puts your worries to rest -By Harvey Mackay When I am asked what I would like on my tombstone, my standard reply is, “He couldn’t sleep fast enough.” For my entire life, I’ve been afraid that I will miss something, so I cheat on sleep. I can’t tell you how many years I’ve been getting by on five to six hours of sleep.

After listening to “The Sleep Doctor,” I might have to reassess my sleeping habits.

Michael J. Breus, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and a diplomat of both the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He was one of the youngest people to have passed the Board, at age 31, and with a specialty in sleep disorders, is one of only 168 psychologists in the world with these credentials and distinction. You may have seen him on a variety of TV shows like Oprah and the Dr. Oz Show, where he also serves on the clinical advisory board.

I invited Dr. Breus to speak to my Roundtable members at a reunion this spring in Arizona. He held us spellbound for 75 minutes and certainly did not put any of us to sleep!

I’ve always considered my sleep deprivation a badge of honor. This is bad! Very bad, according to Dr. Breus.

The Sleep Doctor said that adults who regularly get less than five hours or more than 10 hours of sleep have double the mortality rate. WOW! It’s also hazardous to your health and performance.

Dr. Breus dispelled the idea that everyone needs eight hours of sleep. Everyone has a Circadian rhythm, meaning we go through five 80-100-minute cycles of sleep each night – or at least we’re supposed to.

That’s averages 540 minutes, or 7.5 hours of sleep.

The Sleep Doctor shared many secrets that I think you will find beneficial.

For example, if you fall asleep almost immediately when your head hits your pillow, you are sleep deprived. It should take you 15-20 minutes to fall asleep.

Ironically, the more sleep deprived you are, the more your brain tells you that you are doing fine.

If your alarm gets you up almost every morning, you are not getting

enough sleep.

Dr. Breus said that about 75 percent of U.S. adults – over 70 million – have some form of a sleep problem. Roughly one-third of the people in the United States – about 40 million – suffer from some form of insomnia. Sleep apnea is number two. There are more than 88 sleep disorders.

He said sleep after an event helps you learn from an experience. If you are sleep deprived, your reaction time and muscle memory are reduced. The same holds true in business.

Light is the single biggest disruptor of sleep, according to the Sleep Doctor.

Before the invention of the light bulb, people worked during the daytime and slept when it was dark. The light bulb changed everything. Use a night-light Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Planting Time

Many of us came from a rural background.

When we were kids, we were trained to think of spring as the time to plant something. We kept this desire all of our lives.

In our early years we saw everyone planting the oats, wheat, corn and beans and our mothers encouraging our fathers to get the garden ground ready for planting. The farm crop planting was essential for the survival of the farm and the garden products guaranteed that we would have enough to eat during the next year. Both of these labor intensive necessities required help from the entire family and this included us. We probably began our growing career in the garden, starting with digging the trench and placing the potato pieces in the trench with the eyes up. (Because they had to look up to see where they were growing.) The rest of the garden planting became more of our responsibility as our age and skill increased.

Planting the garden became something we enjoyed. We had spent the previous months tolerating the snow and cold. Now we could be outdoors dressed in minimum clothing, enjoying the warmth of the sun and the smell of the soft soil. The birds were singing, making short visits at our garden and involved in chasing each other as birds do in spring. A striped gopher that lived near the garden frequently explored the edge of the garden and occasionally practiced an escape plan, including it’s high pitched chipping sound.

In the distance, sounds of a train could be heard and maybe a rumble of the iron wheels on the iron tracks. You got a little feeling of wonder, since you had never heard that sound before. A common sound comes from the tractor working in your family’s fields along with a distant tractor sound, which caused you to try to identify whose tractor it was, what it was doing and which neighbor was driving it. You were probably alone or if not, the other person was also enjoying the quiet experience.

Gardening was an experience helpful to both our minds and bodies.

Not everybody had enough land to allow a garden, but those that were able to have a garden probably grew a large part of their family’s food on their own property. In some cases, the families were quite large and the food cost would be great. The garden supplied much of the food needs. The kids were usually able to supply a large portion of the physical labor needed to create the crop, there-by helping to supply the food needed for their existence. This was a “really good deal” for a family’s budget.

It was a feeling of joy and accomplishment to see the seed plants peaking out of the soil. We often made a short detour from other tasks to see if “things were coming up yet.” We then needed to protect our little creations from various threats. We carried pails of water to fight the lack of rain. We picked potato bugs in empty tobacco cans.

Weeds are plants that occur, which we didn’t plant that year. They don’t grow in our neat rows and make the garden look like an undesirable mess. We don’t consider that some of the “weeds” are actually tasty and beneficial for the soil and our bodies, but we were never taught how to make use of them.

Planting something in spring is part of us. We love to see something we planted grow to be a flower or something good to eat. It makes you feel closer to your God. We just naturally like to see and help make things grow. It’s what we are.

if you have to get up during the night.

Bright light wakes up your system and makes it harder to go back to sleep. If you travel a lot, bring a sleep mask to keep things dark.

Dr. Breus joked that he has saved more marriages as a sleep specialist than a marriage counselor, just by getting couples back in bed together, sleeping comfortably. When you walk in your bedroom, you want to have an environment that is conducive to sleep.

He recommended these steps for better sleep: 1. Stick to a schedule. Get up at the same time, and go to bed at the same time. You can sleep 30 minutes extra on weekends, but any more and your biological clock shifts. Your body loves regularity.

2. Stop working at the same time every day. You have to take a mental break, as well as a physical break.

3. Get ready for the next day so you aren’t running around in the morning.

4. Have an electronics curfew with

the exception of a TV. 5. Meditation and prayer close to going to sleep is very beneficial. It helps calm down the brain.

6. Exercise daily.

7. Get 15 minutes of sunlight every morning.

8. Journal what is bothering you 1-2 hours before going to bed. Get it out of your head.

9. Maintain hydration.

As Snoopy said in the Peanuts cartoon, “A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.”

Obituaries Vernon A. “Vern” Jacobs Vernon A. “Vern” Jacobs, age 87 of Melrose, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Pine Villa CentraCare Health Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, May 7 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will was in Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following the Mass.

Vernon August Jacobs was born July 28, 1930 in Upsala, Minnesota, the son of Edward and Veronica (Stueve) Jacobs.

Vern was raised on a dairy and hog farm near Upsala, Minnesota. Vern worked as a farmer and also at Landy Packing in Saint Cloud until closure. Then, he began working at Jennie-O Foods in Melrose until his retirement.

In 1956, he was united in marriage to Mary Kurtz. To this union, six children, Elizabeth, Arthur, Alfred, Madonna, Maggie, and Leo were born.

On June 20, 1977, Vern was married to Mary Ellering Latzka. He then became

Geraldine “Jeri” Catherine Johnson, age 77, Avon, MN, died Sunday, May 6, 2018 at CentraCare Health Melrose Hospital, Melrose, MN. Per Jeri’s wishes there will be no funeral service. Funeral arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.

step father to the Latzka children, Katherine, Jane, Ruth, William, Mary Kay, Elizabeth, Patricia, and Alan. During his marriage to Mary Latzka, Vern and Mary had the privilege of traveling to Europe, Alabama, Arizona, Iowa, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Tennessee, Texas, Wyoming and many more places.

Vern loved riding BMW motorcycles, John Deere tractors, Chevy trucks, woodworking and chopping.

He also enjoyed dancing to old-time music, gardening, and traveling in his RV. Attending festivals, camping, playing cards and making popcorn, spending time with family and friends, babysitting and tinkering in his workshop with wood and machinery were some of his favorite hobbies.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; his children, Elizabeth, Arthur (Holly), Alfred (Karen), Madonna, and Maggie (Allan); 13 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren; his extended family, Katherine (Bill), Jane (Michael), Ruth (Dave), William (K), Mary Kay (Rich), Elizabeth (Jim), Patricia (Paul) and Alan (Marilyn); 24 step grandchildren; 15 step great grandchildren; and 2 step great great grandchildren; and sisters, Carol Ann and Marian.

Vern was preceded in death by his son, Leo; grandson, Tommy Latzka; parents; and brothers and sisters, Gerald, Virgil, Delores, Lillian, Darlene, and Laverne.

Jeri was born May 19, 1940 in Minneapolis, MN to Paul R. and Alice B. (Herberg) Dordan. She was employed as a secretary for CENEX. Jeri enjoyed riding with Terry, camping, playing cards and doing crossword and sudoku puzzles.

Survivors include her son, Lance Kiley (Lisa Lenger) of St. Cloud, MN; brother, Robert Gray of Avon, MN; sisters, Patricia Hoffman of Harlingen, TX; Deborah Ziebarth of Loretto, MN; and Mary Jo Gray of Minneapolis, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, partner Terrence “Terry” Schmitt, and brother, Richard Dordan.

Leo Wentland, 96, of Holdingford, passed away May 3, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon at the Eagles Club, Rochester, MN on Thursday, May 10th.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at the Eagles Club. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rochester, MN. Leo Joseph Wentland was born on March 1, 1922 on the family farm near Holdingford and graduated from Holdingford High School in 1940. On November 11, 1942, Leo entered the Army infantry, was trained as a radio repairman, and served in the Central Pacific area. He was discharged from the 57th Signal Repair Company on December 23, 1945. Leo completed course work in electricity and received his certificate from the Dunwoody Institute in September of 1949, after which he traveled

After living in Minneapolis, they retired to the Burtrum area on Mound Lake where they call home. It is at their lake home where Forrest enjoyed watching nature from his front porch.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Rose Mary Johnson of Burtrum; and many nieces and nephews.

Forrest was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Wynnie (William) Pasch, Berniece (Don) Ludemann, Leila (Bill) Joyce, Myles (Crystal) Johnson, Velma (Zerl) Clay, Clyta (James) Landrum, and Claud Johnson.

One of those places happened to be the original Mayo Clinic Diagnostic Building in Rochester Minnesota. He was very proud to work on this building, for all the knowledge and insight given by Mayo Clinic’s health care teams to their patients. While working there, he met Doris Gardner. Doris and Leo were married May 26, 1964 at the Wayfarers Chapel in Portuguese Bend, California. In 1966, Leo and Doris moved to the Wentland family farm, where they farmed, raised cattle, and ran an electrical contracting business. In 1995, the farm was certified a century farm. Leo was a loving and devoted husband to Doris for over 45 years.

Leo is survived by his brother, Louis Wentland and 52 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Doris, his parents, Ignatz and Anna Wentland; sisters, Josephine Winskowski, Mary, Rose Marsolek, Dorothy Psyck, and Adelaide Stanoch; brothers, Roman, Stanley, Arthur, Ambrose, and Anthony.

Gerald A. Pfannenstein (Jerry), age 75 of Melrose, died May 5th, 2018 at home surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer.

A Mass of burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday., May 11th, 2018 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove, Minnesota.

Visitation will be held at Patton Schad Funeral Home in Melrose on Thursday, May 10th, 2018 from 4-8 p.m. and on Friday, May 11th in the church one hour prior to the service. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m.

He attended Cathedral High School and was a graduate of St. Cloud State University. Jerry was a teacher at Melrose High School for 32 years, and worked at CAP Enterprise throughout his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with family and his grandkids.

He was also an avid Nascar Jeff Gordon fan, and was an ingenious designer…there was no problem that couldn’t be solved!

Jerry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Alice Pfannenstein of Melrose; his sons Jeff of Avon, and Keith of Fishers, IN; daughter Lyn (Mark) Wendlandt of Big Lake; four grandchildren, Charlie, Megan, Jenna and Mason; siblings Charles (Joan), Ron (Marie) and Ruth (Lloyd) Pallansch.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Michael, James, Lois, Dorothy, Gladys, and Andrene.

1964. He married Ruth Linn on February 7, 1970 at Sacred Heart Church in Freeport, Minnesota. Jerry worked for Smurfit-Stone Container Corporate in St. Cloud for over 40 years, retiring in 2008.

Jerry enjoyed fishing, playing cards and cribbage, gardening and spending time with his family, grandchildren, and friends.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruth of Albany; Children, Cory (Toni) of Minneapolis, Bryan of Monticello, Tricia (Dave) Lowe of Denver, CO; grandchildren, Jack Tamm, Anna Tamm, Casen, Harrison and Hudson Lowe; Siblings, Dennis Tamm of Albany, Kathy (Lee) Moening of St. Cloud, sister-in-law Joan Tamm of Clear Lake, and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gene Tamm.

All over the U.S. on Memorial Day, many are remembering the people who died while serving in our country’s armed forces. As we commemorate this federal holiday, many communities hold parades in the city streets and special services at their local cemeteries.

Here in central Minnesota, in the small community of Burtrum, many people gather as onlookers and participants of the Memorial Day Parade, followed with a special service at the Moses Dane Cemetery. Long days in session highlighted last week’s workload at the Capitol. All the major spending bills were passed and made ready for conference committee action with the Senate.

Again, keep in mind that this is not a budget year, so the spending in these bills reflects adjustments to last year’s budget utilizing the surplus contained in state coffers. In the House plan, about a third of the $300 million surplus goes for tax relief and another third goes to roads and bridges.

The agriculture budget was increased by $250,000, with most of it going for a program working with farmers in the area of mental health. In these stressful times, it was important to adjust this area of spending. Currently, one mental health profession deals with issues all over the state, and this increased allocation will allow another person to be hired to work with farm folks, mainly in the northern part of the state.

Two weeks remain in the session, with the final day being May 21. Actually, the last day to actually pass legislation is the day before, May 20, as that final Monday is reserved for retiring speeches and other formalities.

A joint informational hearing was held for the Agriculture and Environment and Natural Resources Committees last week.

We heard testimony from the Office of the Legislative Auditor as they had recently released their evaluation report dealing with the Board of Animal Health’s oversight of deer and elk farms. As of April of this year, Minnesota had 398 registered herds, consisting of about 9,300 deer, elk, and other cervid species. In our area, Stearns and Douglas Counties each have several farms that raise the animals in captivity, while none exist in Pope County.

The concern is that deer and elk health is threatened by a disease called chronic wasting disease (CWD). Since 2002, CWD has been identified on eight Minnesota deer and elk farms, and also in wild

deer in two Minnesota counties. The disease is always fatal, and the only accurate way to test for its presence is to examine brain tissue from dead animals.

The Board of Animal Health, which falls under the direction of the Department of Agriculture, has jurisdiction over the cervid farms, while the DNR has authority over animals that live in the wild. There have been concerns raised about the two agencies not working together well and not sharing information when outbreaks occur.

The report from the Legislative Auditor recommended several changes in Board of Animal Health procedure, including updating its annual inventory report form which cervid farms must complete annually. In addition, the Board should clarify how producers need to verify their herds on an animal-by-animal basis. It was also recommended that the Board and DNR draft a memorandum of understanding outlining each agency’s responsibilities with respect to data sharing.

It was only a few weeks ago that the ground was covered with a white blanket of snow and area lakes were still encased in solid ice. Today, the ice has either melted or been blown off, and farmers are busy playing catch-up with their spring planting. The ground conditions this year seem a bit different, at least on my farm. The low areas of fields are extremely slow in drying out as the frost is just now coming out of the ground. I worked one field two weeks ago but had to leave low spots, thinking they would be dried out by the next weekend. Surprisingly, they were just as wet when I came back a week later! A nice rain would even things out and get things growing.

Grey Eagle City March 13, 2018 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joe Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 13th day of March 2018 in council chambers. Council members present were Thom Muellner, Roland Ahrendt, Brian Hollenkamp and Bill Pohlmann. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Steve Neville, Mark Larson, Sherry Larson, John Zeis, Vern Fuchs, Larry Schultz and Dan Berscheid.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made

by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the February 13, 2018 meeting as written. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Mark and Sherry Larson were in attendance to discuss the following Lions Club activities for 2018: 1. Community Appreciation will be held on May 26th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. All bills would be run through the City and reimbursed by the Lions Club.

2. GEMFest will be held on July 21st and 22nd. This will be the 25th Anniversary of GEMFest. The parade is tentatively scheduled for July 21st at 6:00 p.m. with the tractor pull being held on July 22nd. They are looking into having a fireworks display on July 21st at dusk. They have contacted Precocious Pyrotechnics and have received an estimated cost of $3,000 - $3,500.

The Lions Club is requesting a donation from the City towards the cost of the fireworks.

3. A Tractor Pull will be held on Labor Day. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the 2018 Lions activities with the Community Appreciation bills going through the City and reimbursed by the Lions Club. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Mark informed the council that PJ Signs restored the city sign that is located in Melrose Township for $960. The Lions Club would reimburse the City once a government request form is received. A motion was made

by Thom Muellner to approve paying PJ Signs $960 for restoring the city sign and will submit a government request form for reimbursement.

A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Steve Neville was in attendance requesting permit information for Neville Hardware for the following items: 1. Steve would like to rebuild and extend the fence approximately 8’ between the apartment and the Double R Saloon. An agreement between both property owners would need to be signed allowing placement of the fence on the property line. Agreement must be notarized and a copy submitted to the city when the permit is obtained.

2. Steve would like to install a propane cage on the sidewalk between the service door and the garage door on Woodman Street side of the building. Council stated that he would need to come in with a drawing showing the placement and how much of the sidewalk would be taken up and present to the council at the April meeting.

3. Steve would like to install solar panels on the roof and was unsure if this would require a permit. After some discussion it was determined that a permit would need to be obtained and more information would be needed before a permit could be approved. Steve stated that this project would be a couple of months away but would bring the information to a future council meeting.

Dan Berscheid was in attendance to discuss the following Fire Department items: 1. Bayer reinforced the bumper and all other issues have been resolved. They are requesting final payment of $11,908.14.

2. Bitz Plumbing & Heating provided a drawing of the sink the Fire Department would like to install in the Fire Department meeting room. The cost of the sink and installation will be paid from out of Relief Association funds. A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the installation of the new sink. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

3. A motion was made by Thom Muellner to accept the resignation of Bryan Allen from the Fire Department. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Joe Arnzen thanked Bryan for his many years of service to the Grey Eagle Volunteer Fire Department.

4. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the Fire Department compensations as follows: - increase hourly rate to $10 per hour for any calls, training and meetings. Approve officer’s salary to be paid quarterly as follows: Fire Chief $300, Assistant Chief $200, Medical Officer $125, Liason Officer $125, 1st Lieutenant/Training Officer $125 and 2nd Lieutenant $125.

This will eliminate any extra paid hours at the end of the year and will be effective retroactively to December 1st and all pay will be subject to withholding taxes.

A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

5. New credit cards will need to be ordered for the Fire Chief and Assistant Chief.

The council interviewed three individuals for the part time/seasonal employee position.

After discussion a motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to offer the position to John Zeis at the rate of $11 per hour with a review after three months.

A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed the community sign that still needs to be placed where it would be most visible.

The council discussed side-

walk snow cleaning within the city. The council will work on a plan for the next winter season.

Mayor Joe Arnzen updated the council on his discussions with Mr. Holig regarding the removal of the bush alongside of the bank and the bank parking lot.

The windshield on the city truck has a crack all the way across and can be replaced by Glasswerks for $275. Chico was authorized to get it replaced.

The council discussed a request to rent out the Fire Hall for a private party for April 21st or April 29th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve the rental of the Fire Hall at the cost of $150 per event but only during the months of April – September. Money received for Fire Hall rent will be deposited into the Fire Fund.

A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. The pond gate is breaking and needs to be replaced. The second gate closest to the ponds is the same size and will be used to replace the gate that is breaking.

2. The light on Highway 28 by the Berscheit property has finally been fixed.

3. Chico updated the council on information regarding the sewer project. Bryan Bye is recommending that the council consider locating the west lift station closer to city limits and provided his opinion on locations where he thought it could possibly go.

This could potentially save the city some money as there would be three less manholes that would be replaced and a new lift station will be installed during the project so that sanitary sewer use is available during all phases of the project. The council will take this recommendation under consideration.

The Clerk was instructed to proceed with delinquent utilities as allowed by ordinance.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $750.67 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund and $106.26 from the Water Fund of which $31.26 goes to the Water Fund and $75 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve payment of the bills as listed and to include the payment of the following additional items: $2,313.82 to Minnesota Power, $200 to Central Minnesota Credit Union, $148 to Minnesota State Fire Department Association, $11,908.14 to Bayer Truck Equipment and $960 to PJ Signs. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

April 25, 2018: At 10:37 a property damage accident occurred in the City of Grey Eagle on Minnesota St. E. A female party reported that her light pole in her front yard had been damaged. Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

April 29, 2018: At 12:15 received a 911 call reporting a fisher-man fell through the ice on Fairy Lake off of County Road 95. Authorities arrived on scene and rescued the individual from the ice.

The individual was identified as Daniel Jaeger, age 62 of Paynesville, MN. Jaeger stated he was ice fishing with his brother since approximately 9 AM and were going to leave the lake at 1200 PM on 4/29/18.

Jaeger fell through the ice as they were leaving. Jaeger was in the water, up to his chest for approximately 20 minutes. Jaeger was transported to the Sauk Centre Hospital and is in stable condition. The Todd County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sauk Centre Police, Fire, and EMS, and the Minnesota State Patrol.

April 30, 2018: At 06:05 received a call of a car deer accident that occurred on County 2 East of County 100 in Birchdale TWP. 20 year old Kailey Ness, Long Prairie, reported she was eastbound on County 2 when she struck a deer in the traffic lane.

Kailey was not injured and her Chrysler Sebring received damage to the front end.

May 3, 2018: At 08:16 the Todd County Highway Department reported that an electronic speed sign had been damaged on County Road 47 near County Road 2 South of Grey Eagle. The damage happened sometime in the last week.

May 6, 2018: At 10:08 a grass fire was reported north east of Long Prairie

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

On May, 8 2018 at approximately 10:47 a.m. the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a 65-year-old male had been knocked down by a steer and was unconscious. Witnesses indicated that a steer had hit a gate in the chute area knocking Boeckers backwards and he struck his head. This occurred at the Central Livestock Facility at 34412 County Rd. 10 in Albany Township, just south of the City of Albany. The Albany Police Department and the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call.

Upon arrival, they found the male, Joseph Boeckers of Holdingford, conscious but confused. Central Livestock employees and were rendering first aid to Boeckers until first responders arrived. The Albany Fire Department, Melrose Ambulance arrived and took over providing care to Boeckers. A helicopter from Lifelink Air Ambulance also responded to the call.

Their personnel arrived and transported Boeckers by air to the St. Cloud Hospital for further treatment of his injuries. The extent of those injuries were not known at the time of the transport.

If you love libraries and books and brats, come to the fifth annual Books ‘N’ Brats fund raiser on Saturday, May 19 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Books ‘N’ Brats will be held in the parking lot of Paul and Kathy’s Grocery in Upsala. Hosted by Friends of the Upsala Public Library, the fund raiser features a brat/hotdog lunch with pop and dessert for a suggested donation. Funds raised support the Friends in their ongoing effort to provide programming, prizes and fun at GRRL~Upsala.
