Lessons they don’t teach you in school -By Harvey Mackay

A few months ago I wrote a column about what they don’t teach you in school.

From the positive responses and suggestions I received, it became quite apparent that formal education is a good beginning but real world experience is necessary as well to get ahead.

The prior list included concepts such as taking responsibility for promoting yourself, maintaining a positive attitude, the importance of a smile, and handling rejection.

Here’s my additional list: • Life isn’t fair. How many times do you hear this phrase, especially from young people? It’s true, and you still have to deal with it. Whining about it rarely levels the playing field. But learning to rise above it is the ultimate reward.

• Think outside the box. There is no substitute for creativity. Take stock of your usual practices and look for new and better ways to do things. When something has been done the same way over a long period of time, sometimes it’s a good sign that it’s being done the wrong way.

• Exercise is good for you. I’ve always been active in sports, but one of the best decisions I ever made was when I became a runner over 50 years ago. Be-

ing in shape keeps my energy high and my attitude positive. Studies show that companies that promote exercise have decreased absenteeism, greater productivity, better performance and improved morale.

• Be nice to everyone.

It’s nice to be important, but more important to be nice.

You don’t know who your top customers will be five years from now or where you will be in ten years. You may have a fancy title, but you will always need help from the people around you.

• You do not get what you want, you get what you negotiate. One of the skills that has made the biggest difference in my career is negotiating. It applies to selling, purchasing, hiring, firing, expanding, downsizing and every other phase of business you can name.

• Good manners never go out of style. Whether it’s responding to an invitation, answering the phone or email, or showing simple respect, we expose our own weaknesses when we display thoughtless or boorish behavior. One of the nastiest names that someone can call you is “rude.” Especially because it doesn’t take any more effort to be polite - and it takes a whole lot of work to restore your good reputation.

• Visualization. I believe that visualization is one of the most powerful means of achieving personal goals.

Many people, especially athletes and

celebrities, have discovered the amazing power of visualization and have used it to enhance their careers and achieve their goals and dreams. They visualize that they are not quitters. They will not allow circumstances to keep them down. If seeing is believing, visualizing is achieving.

• Practice humility. Humility is becoming a lost art - in an era of self-promotion and making sure you get all the credit you deserve. Humility is not difficult to practice. It doesn’t involve downplaying your achievements. It doesn’t mean that you won’t be recognized for your contributions. It does mean that you realize that others have been involved in your success and you are prepared to be involved in theirs. Anyone who thinks he or she is indispensable should stick their finger in a bowl of water and notice the hole it leaves when they pull it out.

• Enthusiasm is the spark that ignites lives. If you aren’t excited about hitting the pavement every day, it will show in your performance. Pros are always enthusiastic about doing their job to the best of their ability. Napoleon Hill, one of my favorite authors, writes, “You have absolute control over but one thing, and that is your thoughts.” You can control your own destiny.

• Teamwork is not just important in sports. There are few human endeavors that are truly solo acts. I have been on all sorts of teams, and those that yielded

the most successful results recognized the contributions of those at every level. A capable team captain plays on the strengths of all the team members - and understands the value of a well-delivered pep talk.

Obituaries Alda Mae Mayers

Agnes Bernadine Wuebkers

Alda Mae Mayers, age 82 of New Munich, died peacefully surrounded by her family after a battle with leukemia on Monday, March 4, 2013 at her home in New Munich, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 7 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Alda Mae Gilk was born February 19, 1931 in Albany Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Jacob and Clara (Weinmann) Gilk. She graduated from Albany High School in 1949 and worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul for two years. On September 11, 1951 she married Raymond Mayers at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. The couple farmed south of New Munich until they retired in 1989, and then moved into town. After retirement, Alda Mae was a food service worker for the Melrose Area School.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New

She enjoyed quilting and sewing for family, traveling and going on casino runs, playing cards, fishing, both flower and vegetable gardening, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Mayers of New Munich; children, David (Shirley) Mayers of Swanville, Mary Jane (Stan) Kortenbusch of Albany, Alice (Dennis) Groetsch of Alexandria, Ruth (Tom) Boeckermann of Lakeville, and Tim (Lori) Mayers of Freeport; 14 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren; sister, Connie (Eugene) Chock of St. Joseph; and brother, Rollie (Tillie) Gilk of Albany.

Alda Mae was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Herbert Gilk and Oliver Gilk; sister, Lucetta Lischwe; and an infant great-grandson, Joseph.

Serving as casket bearers will be Keith Kortenbusch, Michael Kortenbusch, Ben Mayers, Joel Mayers, Kevin Groetsch, Corey Groetsch, Thomas Boeckermann, and Kurt Mayers.

Cross bearer will be Ashley Mayers and scripture bearer will be Crystle Illa.

Flower bearer will be Shanelle Mayers and readers will be Amy Hendricks and Kimberly Poitra. The eulogy will be read by Tina Streit and honorary bearers will be the Christian Women.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Agnes Bernadine Wuebkers, age 74 of Upsala will be 11 AM, Saturday, March 9th, 2013 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis.

Father John Odero will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the service. Agnes died unexpectedly in her home Tuesday morning. There will be a visitation for Agnes from 4-8 PM Friday, March 8th at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Upsala and again from 10-11 AM Saturday morning once again at the funeral home. Parish prayers will take place at 6 PM followed by the Christian Mothers praying the rosary at 6:30 PM Friday evening at the funeral home in Upsala. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Upsala.

Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Lou Dinndorf, age 69, of Blaine formerly of Albany, will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 8th, 2013 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Father Michael Naughton will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the service. Mary Lou died late Sunday night at Mercy Hospital surrounded by her son and daughter. There will be a visitation from 4:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, March 7th at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and again after 9:00 AM until the time of service on Friday, March 8th at the church.

Mary Lou was born on December 10, 1943 in Melrose to Edwin and Levina (Moening) Thull. She grew up on the family farm with her two brothers and spent a lot of time with her cousins.

After high school, Mary Lou married Martin John Dinndorf and together they raised two children in Albany. She had a sweet disposition and a positive outlook.

1938 in Melrose to Leo and Monica (Herzog) Hinnenkamp. She married Jerome Wuebkers on July 10th, 1962 in Melrose. After marriage, the couple moved to a farm near St. Francis where she worked as a mother and homemaker until eventually retiring to Upsala in 2000. Agnes had many things she enjoyed in life. She was most proud of her beautiful gardens. She was a very active member of the St. Fracnis Sewing Circle, the Christian Mothers, and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where she was also active in the choir and assisted with religion education.

Because of her love of flowers and gardening, she was a member of the Stearns County Master Gardeners.

Agnes is survived by her loving children Charlene (Frank) Hohmann, Royalton; Kevin (Janice) Wuebkers, St. Francis; her seven grandchildren; and her siblings Ralph (Doris) Hinnenkamp, Melrose; Dorine (Greg) Nowak, Dayton, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents Leo and Monica Hinnenkamp, and her husband Jerome Wuebkers who passed in January of 2008.

Mary Lou is survived by her children Dean (Dana) Dinndorf, Welch; Gina (Greg) Pfeifer, Andover; her brothers Leroy (Dorothy) Thull, St. Cloud; Melvin Thull, St. Cloud; her grandchildren Kelsey, Alex, Kayleen, Jackson, and Emma; her in-laws Marilyn (Marty) Ritter, Joanne (Greg) Johnson, David (Darlene) Dinndorf, Ann Marie (Wayne) Spanier; her nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband Martin in 1987; her parents Edwin and Levina Thull; and an infant granddaughter Katelyn Pfeifer.

Swanville Jr. High Student of the Month

Katelyn Nohner has been chosen as the Swanville Junior High School February Student of the Month for 7th through 9th grades. She is a seventh grade student.

Katelyn participated in Softball last year as a sixth grader and plans to play again this spring. Outside of school she enjoys painting, reading, sports, writing stories and just hanging out with family and friends. She is the daughter of Joei Klemish and BJ Nohner.

She advises fellow students to “keep grades up and turn in their assignments.”

She also urges them to “have hope in your future.” Her future plans are to attend college and ultimately become a teacher.

Swanville Sr. High Student of the Month Swanville Senior High School is proud to announce Senior Julie Johnson as the February Student of the Month for grades 10 through 12. Julie is the daughter of Neil and Debbie Johnson.

Academically Julie has been on the honor roll consistently since her junior year.

She played Volleyball in grades seven through nine and kept stats for the team her senior year. She also participates in band and has been a member since seventh grade. Julie is also active in her church helping with auctions and the Santa breakfast. She is currently competing for Dairy Princess in Morrison County. Julie keeps busy by hanging out with friends and being with her family.

Community Snapshots

Swanville students participated in folk dance sessions on February 21-22, that were taught by specialist Terrence Smith. Mr. Smith is from Duluth and provided live music and recordings during the 55 minute classes. He teaches a variety of dances where participants learn several formations and actions.

During these sessions all of the students’ intelligences were challenged, which resulted in a burst of enthusiam and energy. Besides teaching dance, Mr. Smith stresses good citizenship, respect for others feelings, doing your best and staying focused. One of the benefits of being a smaller school is the ability to join students together of various ages. Students from the high school paired with elementary students to dance along with them and help lead. Later Mr. Smith led the high school students alone in more advanced techniques.

Members of the FFA Shooting Team attended the National Pheasant Fest this weekend at the Minneapolis convention center. By attending, the LPGE FFA shooting team will be receiving a $5000.00 Midway USA scholastic Shooting trust. This Trust is a partnership between Our local Todd County Pheasants Forever organization and the Midway USA Foundation. The trust will allow the shooting club to use 5% of the trust per year for registration and travel expenses to regional and state meets for skeet, trap, and sporting clays. The organization will also match funds 2:1 for any fundraising the team can do for the year, adding to the benefit for these individuals. The Shooting Club also received great shooting vests from the Todd County Pheasants Forever Chapter. They had many great comments on them at the event. Community Builders Spotlight Business

By Jill Kurowski Leisure Resort and Campground is located on the northeast portion of Long Lake about 3.4 miles northwest of Burtrum and has been owned and operated by the Don and Barb Brown family since 1979.

The resort and campground consists of 5 modern cabins and 24 full hookup camping sites. Most of our camping is on a seasonal basis with 3 or 4 sites left open for occasional camping. Many of the seasonal campers are from the following areas: Little Falls, St. Cloud and Twin Cities. Most of the cabin guests come to us by word of mouth, lived in this area, have friends or relatives that live in the area now, or have seen our web page. The short term campers find us by using a GPS, our web page or referral by local businesses.

In reviewing the customer registration forms for the year we are amazed at the number of people from out-of-state that have spent time here. Over the years we have met many different and interesting people including several groups of bikers that were biking across the United States. One group this last summer was a family biking to raise money

for the MS Society. Another interesting group was a family from England that came to the United States, rented a motor home and was touring our country.

Our resort has changed over the years. At one time we had 10 rental boats and 3 rental motors. Now, most customers have their own boats so we now only rent 3 boats, 2 motors and a 22 ft. pontoon. At one time we also had a small grocery store and bait shop but have discontinued that. A well maintained swimming beach is one of our weakest points; we continue to work on it each year but because of the resort location. On the east shore of the lake our lakeshore is not able to take advantage of the summer southerly winds. However the depth of the lake and the clean water is to our advantage.

Our style of operation is to make every effort to run the business in a quiet, family respectful manner. Many people say “That’s exactly what we’ve been looking for.”

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Health insurance exchange, town hall meetings and more It looks to be a busy few days here in St. Paul, with the bill formulating the Health Insurance Exchange up for debate early in the week, followed by voting in a joint session Wednesday evening on candidates for the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota.

Capping off the week will be a series of town hall meetings back home Friday and Saturday. I’ll start off by joining a 9 a.m. Friday meeting (March 8) at the Broadway Ballroom in Alexandria. District 12 State Senator Torrey Westrom will join me for another meeting that same afternoon, at 1 p.m., in Sauk Centre at the Java Jitters Cafe hosted by that city’s Chamber of Commerce. Then, Saturday (March 9) Sen. Westrom and I will hold meetings in Glenwood (9 a.m.) at the Lakeside Ballroom, in Melrose (10:45 a.m.) at the City Center, in Freeport (1 p.m.) at Charlie’s Cafe, and finishing up in Albany (2:15 p.m.) at the Hillcrest Cafe.

These meetings, which are open to all residents, allow for discussion on various topics of interest. They allow us to hear first-hand how potential legislation will affect constituents. Topics expected to be discussed at this week’s meetings include Gov. Dayton’s tax reform plan, implementation of the federal health care law, the state budget, along with funding for long term care and education.

New Budget Forecast: The longawaited February budget forecast was released last week, and it contained good news for our state’s economy. It projected a surplus of $295 million when this current two-year budget cycle ends on June 30. That means an additional payment will be going to our schools as we work to pay back the education shift.

The improving economy and work done by the Legislature and Governor have made a difference in slowing the rate of automatic spending increases. The “Big 3” in terms of state revenue, individual and corporate income taxes, along with the sales tax, are all coming in above

projections. In the past two years, revenues have increased by roughly $3 billion over earlier estimates. That’s a good sign Minnesota is well on the way to recovery from the recent recession.

Babysitter Tax? It was stated by Revenue Commissioner Frans in a hearing last week before the Tax Committee that enterprising young folks who babysit, mow lawns or do other tasks for pay, may be subject to collecting sales tax if the governor’s tax reform plan is enacted. According to the Commissioner, such work is normally classified as “isolated and occasional.” However, if one performs that service more than three times in a year for a family or individual, it would be subject to sales tax. That means kids who mow lawns or babysit for the same family more than three times a year would have to collect and remit sales tax to the state. He or she would also need to maintain a record of transactions.

At school, Cheslee participates in Knowledge Bowl, volleyball, and Student Council, serving as a class representative. She has also earned a place on the school’s “A Honor Roll.” Out of school, Cheslee likes to dance, hunt with her dad, fish, and swim. She enjoys babysitting and volunteering in her community.

In the future, Cheslee has plans to work in orthopedics. She believes math is her most valuable class because she will “use it forever” and most enjoys her social studies class because “Ms. Lewis is always upbeat and makes learning fun.”

Swanville City February 5, 2013 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, February 5, 2013. The meeting called to order 7:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, AJ Johnson, Jim Molitor, Tim Grittner, and Jim Piekarski.

Also present: Michael Rude, Toby Wipf, Brian Zapzalka and reporter Liz Verley.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held January 8, 2013 were read. Tim Grittner made a motion to accept the minutes as read. AJ Johnson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Jim Piekarski to approve the treasurer’s report.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mike Rude, with WSN was present to discuss with council the Rhoda Avenue Project. The project will cover: Rhoda Avenue from 1st Street (Co Rd 12) to 6th Street; 5th Street from Rhoda Avenue to Berkey Avenue; 3rd Street from Berkey Avenue to Water Tower; 2nd Street from Berkey Avenue to DeGraff Avenue Some of the project will have to be paid from resident assessments, which means a public hearing will have to be set. Council set the public hearing for March 5, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. in the Swanville Senior Center. The regular city council monthly meeting will follow. The clerk will send letters to property owners involving this project and notices will be posted.

This project is expected to begin about the beginning of July, 2013.

Toby Wipf, representing JennieO Mill, was present to discuss with council the proposed increase

in sewer rate for mill. Wipf would like to give council members a tour of the mill and then discuss how much water actually goes down the sewer. The council decided to table the increase rate until the tour is completed.

The franchise ordinance for Greater MN Gas, Inc was discussed. The city attorney has looked over the ordinance and found it suitable. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the Greater MN Gas, Inc franchise ordinance with no franchise fee. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion passed.

Mayor Peterson passed out copies of the no fault sewer insurance policy. It was decided to table until the next meeting.

Mayor Peterson stated interviews will be made this month for the part time maintenance helper.

Pay increase was looked at for present maintenance worker. After discussion, it was decided to leave pay as decided at the last monthly meeting.

City maintenance worker asked to go to the MN Rural Water Convention for further education, in March. Council approved.

The following claims were

presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. Tim Grittner made a motion to approve the claims. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

DNR recommends trimming Oak trees before April 1 The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds Minnesotans to prune oak trees before April 1 to prevent new oak wilt infestations.

“The best time to prune oak trees is during the winter months when the beetles that carry the oak wilt fungus are dormant,” said Ryan Blaedow, DNR forest health specialist.

Beetle activity usually peaks between April and June; however, oak wilt can be transmitted any time during the growing season when it is warm enough for the beetles to feed on the sap of wounded oaks.

“The key to keep oak wilt from spreading is to remove diseased trees before spore mats form and by preventing the transfer of spores to healthy trees,” Blaedow said. “If your oaks need to be pruned, get the work done before April 1, otherwise wait until fall. Unfortunately, people who prune their oaks in the spring find their tree is dead by the end of the summer.”

To prevent the spread of oak wilt, follow these management guidelines: • If possible, trim oak trees during the winter.

• Avoid wounding oak trees between April and July when sap beetles actively feed.

• Immediately treat wounds with pruning paint during spring and summer months to stop flow.

• Remove diseased trees before the following spring to prevent spore mat development.

• It is best to remove trees in the winter to avoid wounding neighboring trees.

• Destroy infested wood or treat wood on site by debarking, chipping or drying the wood.

• To dry wood properly, cover split wood with plastic and bury the edges for at least six months to kill the oak wilt fungus and any insects.

Oak wilt is an aggressive disease that affects many species of oak, and kills thousands of oak trees each year in forests, wood lots and home landscapes in the eastern United States. Trees in the red oak group are more susceptible to oak wilt than trees in the white oak group. In Minnesota, black oak, northern pin oak and northern red oak belong to the red oak group, while bur oak, swamp white oak and white oak belong to the white oak group.

The disease is caused by a nonnative fungus that invades the water-conducting vessels of oak trees. Oak trees respond to the invasion by plugging their vessels, which causes leaves to wilt from the top of the crown downward. Infected trees in the red oak group often shed their leaves and start to die within a few weeks of symptom onset, while trees in the white oak group usually die slowly over one to many years.

Melting snowpack won’t help drought; spring floods predicted Melting winter snowfall won’t do much to alleviate the extremely dry soil conditions across Minnesota, even if some areas experience spring flooding, said Greg Spoden, the state climatologist.

Roughly 70 percent of Minnesota is in extreme drought or severe drought.

“All of the snow that has fallen over the winter by and large remains on top of the landscape, a landscape that is largely frozen,” he said. “Now the dust remains beneath the concrete.”

Despite winter precipitation that’s a little above average for much of the state and well above historic levels for parts of west-central and north-central Minnesota, soil moisture remains near all-time lows in much of the state.

Even flooding at this point won’t alleviate a drought.

The National Weather Service, which produces flood outlooks, has called for a high risk of flooding in the southern reaches of the Red River Valley, including the communities of FargoMoorhead and Wahpeton-Breckenridge in the late winter and early spring.

As the spring melt comes, the sun’s energy will be used to melt the snow first, rather than thaw out the ground.

Water will flow over the land, leaving it drought-stricken once the waters subside. “First the snow has to leave before the soil unfreezes,” Spoden said. “So we can’t face a situation really where the soil will thaw and allow a significant infiltration of that snowpack.”

Abundant spring rain is needed to recharge the soil. Family stories Scrapbooking Weekend

The Stearns History Museum and Research Center will turn into scrapbooking heaven for 30 hours between Friday, April 19 and Sunday, April 21. Scrapbooking can be done anywhere (and is!).

Scrapbooking at the SHMRC offers the opportunity to think about scrapbooking in its historical context. Every scrapbook tells a story and most tell a history story. In addition to ample time to create scrapbooks (using your own tools as well as some provided by the Museum), the weekend will also include optional workshops on incorporating genealogical research into your scrapbooking projects, on how people in the past have done scrapbooks, and on how to use your scrapbook to craft your own, your family’s, your community’s story. Each day will include one make and take. A Creative Memories consultant will provide advice, ideas, answer questions, and offer a selection of CM supplies. Friday night pizza, Saturday lunch, Sunday brunch, and snacks and water provided and a refrigerator and microwave oven are available.
