Getting fired can be a good thing -By Harvey Mackay When you are fired, you’re rejected. It’s as simple as that.

It’s the end of the road for that job. But it might put you on the superhighway to a Super Bowl championship!

Look no further than Gary Kubiak, who is the newest poster child for rebounding from adversity. He was fired as head coach of the NFL’s Houston Texans after the 2013 season when the team won only two of 16 games. If you had predicted that less than two years later, he would coach the Denver Broncos to a Super Bowl championship, people would think you were delusional. But good things happen to people with experience who

continue to work to improve.

Professional sports, entertainment and business are filled with stories of people who got second, third, fourth and more chances. That’s because there is no substitute for experience. For example, last year in the National Football League there were seven head coach openings.

Four were filled by people like Kubiak with prior experience.

Kubiak also exhibited a strong leadership trait in loyalty. He brought seven assistant coaches from his previous head-coaching job in Houston with him to Denver, and he also signed a few players who were cut from his previous team after he left.

It’s interesting that the two competing coaches in last year’s Super Bowl – Bill Belichick of New England and Pete Carroll of Seattle – were both fired from previous jobs as well.

I remember before last year’s game how Carroll called himself a “retread multiple times.” He said: “It’s just experiences …. Everybody is going to falter and make mistakes and say, ‘I wish I would have known then what I know now.’”

I interviewed Bill Belichick for my 2004 book “We Got Fired! … And It’s the Best Thing That Ever Happened To Us.” Belichick was fired by the Cleveland Browns after the 1995 season and became head coach of the New England Patriots in 2000, after Pete

Carroll had the job for three seasons and was fired.

Belichick said: “I think every game, every week, every year is a great experience. I’d say I’ve learned every year I’ve been in the league no matter what capacity it’s been in. Hopefully I’ll keep learning. I’ve got a lot to learn.” And this from one of only two NFL coaches with four Super Bowl championships.

One comment that Belichick made, which I also heard Gary Kubiak mention, was about delegating. Belichick said that he is a detail-oriented person and has learned to delegate more with the Patriots, focusing more time and energy into some bigger picture things.

It helps that he inherited a veteran team, including his quarterback Peyton Manning.

Yes, the same Peyton Manning that won a Super Bowl in 2007 with the Indianapolis Colts and was also “fired” when the Colts were able to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.

For the rest of us, getting fired may not be as public. So it’s important to figure out why you were fired. Most people are mistaken in why they believe they lost their job. Some will say that they’re failures, others that their boss had it in for them, and others yet that they were sure their career ended because of a faux pas they made at the company picnic. Often firing is a straightforward cost-cutting measure. When you’re fired, it’s easy to weave fantasies and imagine villains. If you are going to spend even an hour feeling miserable,

make sure that you are miserable for the right reason.

Tony Dungy, whom I was instrumental in recruiting to the University of Minnesota and who was recently elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is another Super Bowl winning coach who was fired. For the record, he coached the Indianapolis Colts to the 2007 championship after being fired by

Obituaries Leo “Shorty” Thieschafer Leo “Shorty” Thieschafer, age 72 of Upsala died Monday, February 29 at his home, with his family by his side. Leo’s family will have a service at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 5, at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home Chapel in Upsala with a public visitation one hour prior.

There will be a public gathering after 12:00 Noon at the Upsala Rec Center.

Leo was born August 19, 1943 in Swanville to Herman and Marie (Wolbeck) Thieschafer, he married Charlotte Roering on May 15, 1971 in the St. Francis Catholic Church. Leo worked in Road Construction and also at Landy Packing. He last worked with Dave Gerads Construction before he retired. Leo enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and especially his grandchildren. They brought out the

big kid in him. He rode bike, horse and mini-dirt bike a time or two with them.

Shorty loved to fish and he and his wife taught all his children, grandchildren, sisters and many others to love fishing.

He also enjoyed visiting the neighbors and friends while driving here and there to watch Dave Gerads at his jobs.

Shorty also enjoyed hauling scrap iron, watching over Randy and Corey’s cows, drinking his coffee and telling jokes.

Leo is survived by his wife, Charlotte, Upsala; his children, Cindy (Marc) Kuepers, Upsala; Randy (Amy) Thieschafer, Upsala; Jennifer (Darren) Heldman, Staples; Tanya (Donald) Trettel, Upsala; Corey (Angie Sahr) Thieschafer, Upsala; Ricky (Holly Robbin) Thieschafer, Upsala, five grandchildren; Jordan, Taylor, Brooke, Samantha, Alex; sisters, Helen (Robert) Becker, Swanville; Arlene (Gary) Hammer, Burtrum and brother, Alcuin “Pete” Thieschafer, Long Prairie.

Leo is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Alvin Thieschafer, his sister, Rosie Bruder and nieces, Candace Kaun and Dawn Becker.

Blake, age 89, of Long Prairie who passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at CentraCare Health Systems – Long Prairie. Carol was born December 13, 1926 to Arthur and Garda (Anderson) Traver. She grew up in Detriot Lakes, MN and was the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Detriot Lakes High School in 1944.

After High School, Carol worked at a bank in Detriot Lakes. On May 31, 1948 she married Keith Blake. After their marriage, Keith and Carol moved to Chicago where she worked as an administrative assistant

Services celebrating the life of Sheila A. Eiden, age 68 of Northfield, will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 3 at All Saints, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Sheila died Sunday at the Three Links Hospice Home in Northfield. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM Thursday at the church in Holdingford.

Sheila was born August 16, 1947 in St. Cloud. She was the 12th of 13 children born to Walter and Christina (Scheibel) Eiden. She was the first of the 13 to be born at a hospital. She grew up on the

family farm west of Holdingford. Sheila attended Holdingford Public Schools and St. Cloud State University. She taught school in Northfield Elementary most of her teaching career. She always knew she wanted to be a teacher. Her hobbies included sewing, reading, knitting, bird watching and traveling. She was a member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Northfield.

Sheila is survived by her brothers and sisters, John (Annette) Eiden, New Hope; Leo Eiden, New Hope; George (Rosie) Eiden, Holdingford; Glenn (Ardith) Eiden, Golden Valley; Warren (Bernice) Eiden; Holdingford; Mona Cambell, Westland, MI; Ellen (Ken) Loegering, New Brighton; Morjorie (Richard) Evans, Hopkins; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Kathleen Eiden, Esther Wilson, Lois Zanter and one brother, Alphonse Eiden.

to Walgreens Corporate. In 1951, they moved to Hawley, MN where her children Marcia and Greg were born. They moved to Long Prairie in 1954, and later had her children Kevin and Lisa. Carol was a stay at home mom until 1973 when she began working at the Long Prairie Hospital.

Carol then transferred to the Nursing Home and worked as an administrative assistant. Carol worked at the Nursing Home until retiring in 1992.

Carol enjoyed antiquing, singing, directing the church choir, going to concerts, following the Long Prairie Marching Ambassadors Band, and watching her grandchildren play sports.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Woodrow, Dwight, Wilbert, and Elliott; and sisters: Jean and Betty.

Carol will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, sister, and friend.

Winners Named for the Upsala Community Variety Show Braeden Rene

There were many “winners” in the Upsala Community Variety Show VII held Sunday, February 28 in the Upsala School Auditorium, including the two large audiences that took in the matinee and evening shows. The only “losers” were those who missed the entertaining two-hour spectacular that showcased seventeen samples of Upsala’s “finest and funnest.”

Singing Andy Grammer’s popular tune, “It’s Good To Be Alive Right About Now (Hallelujah), Braeden Rene edged out the Prom Family and won “Best of Show” honors and the $100 first place prize. Braeden is a fifth grader and the son of Andre and Wendy. He sang with confidence and great stage presence.

In a close vote for second place, the audience chose the Prom Family, as father DJ (guitar/vocal) joined wife JoAnne (vocal), daughter Rachel (vo-

cal, piano, flute), and son Collin (vocal, drums) in performing a medley of tunes from the past: Dance, Dance, Dance, Don’t Stop, Heard It in A Love Song, and Rhiannon.

Third place was awarded to seventh grader Michael Young, who entertained us with his magic act.

Only four votes separated the next three spots. Fourth place went to Collin Welch, who performed a vocal solo with piano accompaniment by Nate Schumer. Just missing the prizes were a Vocal Solo by Nate Schumer accompanied by Rachel Prom, and the Krebs siblings, Alexis and Dillon, who performed a skit called “The Brain Salesman.”

The balance of the program brought even more variety to the show, including duo, Marcy Kedrowski and daughter Crystal Bensen singing; a saxophone arrangement of “Super Mario Bros” by Jenna and Curtis Robertson and Denise Cheney; and vocal solo’s by Kailee Janssen and Jenna Robertson.

Rounding out the program was a snare drum trio, Brandon Young, Stef Pohlman and Noelle Kedrowski; another instrumental ensemble and a vocal trio, Denise Cheney, Jenna Robertson

It was time to climb into bed after reading a story from the Bible. “Now Edie,” said her Mom, “be sure to kneel down and say your prayers before climbing into bed.” Kissing her gently, she reminded her that she would be downstairs making sure she would be safe.

The next morning at breakfast her mom said, “Well, Edie, did you say your prayers before you fell asleep?”

“Well, sort of, Mom,” she replied.

“I got down on my knees and started to pray. Then I thought, ‘God, You must get bored with this kind of stuff night

after night. Why don’t You listen carefully and I’ll tell You the story of The Three Bears.’ So I snuggled in bed and told Him the story of The Three Bears. I really think He enjoyed it.”

God gave us no specific formula to follow when we pray. In Jesus’ model prayer we are reminded of all of the important things that we are to take to God in prayer. Jesus, in Gethsemane, set a marvelous example. His prayers were simple, sincere and straight forward.

David knew it was not necessary to follow a formula. “Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth,” is how he began a prayer on one occasion. Then with openness and honesty he said what he had to say and God responded and met his immediate needs.

God is that way. When we have a need all we have to do is to go to Him in faith and express our needs.

Sudoku Answers from February 25

Former Area Resident Arrested In St. Cloud On Sexual Assault Charges Former Upsala student and Burtrum resident Dustin Bartkowicz, age 34, was arrested last week after an alleged violent sexual assault on his tent mate.

Bartkowicz and his alleged victim were living in a tent in St. Cloud at the time of the alleged incident last Wednesday.

Authorities say 34-year-old Dustin

Bartkowicz allegedly raped and choked his female victim, after she told Bartkowicz she was leaving him while trying to collect her possessions from the tent they were using for a home.

Additionally, according to the complaint, Bartkowicz threatened to kill her by hitting her in the head with a brick.

This victim was treated at the St. Cloud hospital for injuries including a broken rib.

Charges include first degree criminal sexual conduct, terroristic threats, and domestic assault. Bartkowicz could face up to 73 years in prison from the charges filed against him.

Lake along the North end section 11 of Kandota Township. William Johnson age 33 of Stacy, Mn. was traveling North on the Lake because confused as to the location of the access, and drove into the open water near the river access to Sauk Lake. William and his passenger Timothy Klemenko age 47 of Burnsville, MN both escaped from the vehicle, a 1988 Olds Delta 88. Only the front of the vehicle broke through the ice and both the driver and passenger escaped and were not injured. DNR and vehicle owners returned during day light hours to remove the vehicle. Todd County Sheriff would once again like to alert everyone the winter ice conditions are not safe and with the warm weather, driving on the ice is not advised.

February 29, 2016: At 16:22 Alfonzo Symalla age 54 of rural Long Prairie and Helen Bruder age 60 of rural Long Prairie were involved in a minor two vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 71 and Elk Loop. Symalla was driving his 2001 Buick Lesabre west on Elk Loop and was at the stop sign when Bruder was turning onto Elk Loop from Highway 71 with her 2003 Chevy Impala when the two cars hit.

February 25, 2016: At 8:58 Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a truck through the ice on Little Sauk Lake. It was found the passenger side of the truck had gone through the ice approximately 50 yards northwest of the access. The water was approximately 3 feet deep and everyone had gotten out safely. The truck was removed without incident and was not damaged. The lake was marked as having thin ice and everyone going out on it should use caution.

The Todd County Sheriff’s Office is warning everyone the lake conditions in the county are changing rapidly and they should use extreme caution when going out on them.

February 25, 2016: At 10:12 Bradley Kummer age 55 of rural Sauk Centre reported that his house had been broke into sometime in the last week, he was missing several electronics and a glass jar and ammunition.

DNR Conservation Officers Receive Awards

Six conservation officers with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources were honored at Camp Ripley, Tuesday, Feb. 2 for outstanding performance and service in 2015.

The DNR named Conservation Officer Jeff Johanson of Osakis Officer of the Year. This prestigious award is presented annually to an officer based upon overall career performance with emphasis on the officer’s previous job evaluation period.

“Officer Johanson understands the importance of maintaining the balance in today’s conservation law enforcement, as we strive to gain voluntary compliance through education, outreach, and enforcement,” said Col. Rodmen Smith, DNR Enforcement Division director.

“He has proven that he can successfully manage sensitive issues between stakeholders and the DNR.” A conservation officer since 2001, Johanson has always stepped up to take on special duties and extra projects.

He is a field training officer, use of force instructor, Glock armorer, as well as a member of the Enforcement Division’s equipment and uniform committees. He also recently served as the Conservation Officer Academy coordinator.

Other honors included: Conservation Officer Phil George of Rochester was recipient of the Education Achievement Award. The award recognizes an officer based on overall career performance with emphasis on involvement in the division’s education programs; support and involvement with volunteer instructors; and educational efforts through the media and special presentations.

“His knowledge and ability to teach people proper safety education assures that our outdoor enthusiasts – kids and adults – know the laws, ethics and re-

sponsibilities of safe hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation,” Smith said.

Conservation Officer Tony Salzer of Ham Lake received the Waterfowl Enforcement Achievement Award. The annual award is presented to a conservation officer dedicated to protecting Minnesota’s natural resources, serving the public and preserving our waterfowl heritage.

“His outreach and educational efforts include spending extra time during firearms safety training discussing the importance of waterfowl identification, along with teaching an outdoor adventure class at a local school district where waterfowl is a center point,” Smith said.

Water Resource Enforcement Officer Larry Hanson accepted the Willard Munger Wetland Achievement Award.

The award is named after the long-time legislator who died in 1999 leaving a 43year legacy of environmental activism to the people of Minnesota.

Conservation Officer Chad Thesing of Albany earned the Boat and Water Safety Achievement Award. The honor is based on demonstrated leadership abilities and outstanding achievements in boating safety education, boating while intoxicated enforcement, and service to other law enforcement agencies.

The Meritorious Service Award was presented to Conservation Officer David Schottenbauer of Silver Bay who served as Conservation Officer Academy director from 2011 to 2014.

The DNR’s Enforcement Division employs about 186 licensed peace officers responsible for recreational law enforcement and protecting the natural resources of Minnesota. The division has its headquarters in St. Paul where it operates 18 law enforcement districts throughout the state.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, M y boyfriend is wondering if he should buy life insurance for his mom and dad.

They’re both in their seventies, and they’re no longer married to each other. His mom is disabled and remarried, and she doesn’t have any life insurance coverage. The only coverage his dad may have would be through his employer. He’s afraid he would have to pay funeral expenses if one of them died, and he’s not in good enough shape financially to do that right now. What’s your advice?

-Cherie Dear Cherie, If the only insurance his dad may have is furnished through his employer, then yeah, when he stops working he probably won’t have life insurance anymore. It would be fine if he wanted to buy them each a small policy, but it’s going to be very expensive at their age.

He would have to get them to sign off on it, and they’d also have to be healthy enough to have a policy issued.

This isn’t a good long-term plan, however. As a long-term plan, I’d tell your boyfriend that he needs to build up his own wealth. If he had $15,000 to $20,000 in savings, that’s more than enough to bury two people. I don’t mean to sound insensitive, but we’re talking about the economics involved in this kind of situation. You can have a nice funeral for as little as $5,000.

The other thing I’d do if I were him is I’d have a discussion with mom as to whether or not the stepfather has the funds to handle this sort of thing. When it comes right down to it that would be his responsibility, not the son’s. Then, he should have a similar discussion with his dad. If his dad’s got insurance through work, and the stepdad is ready to pay for his mom’s burial, then I wouldn’t buy insurance on them.

They’re covered for the immediate future.

So I wouldn’t do it unless they absolutely don’t have this sort of thing covered. Even then I’d prefer you just cover it with cash, because all we’re talking about is just enough to cover burial costs. Nothing needs to be elaborate.

Dear Dave, My wife and I are in Baby Step 2 of your plan, and we’ve got our twentieth wedding anniversary coming up in a few months. We had always planned on taking a 10-day luxury trip to celebrate, but now that we’re trying to get out of debt it seems pretty unrealistic. Should we pause the Baby Steps and celebrate like we originally planned, or would it be better to concentrate on paying off debt?

-Don Dear Don, If it were me, I’d want to pause and celebrate in a smaller way. Then, in a year or two when you’ve reached your goal of being debt-free, you could have a big double celebration — for your anniversary and for gaining control of your finances.

Think about it. Why isn’t the twentyfirst, twenty-second or twenty-third anniversary just as big as the twentieth?

No reason really. It’s just an arbitrary milestone we as human beings decided on and created. But you can “undecide” stuff like that anytime you want.

If you two, as a couple, are in agreement on that point, then it suddenly becomes easier to delay pleasure in order to win. And trust me, when you agree on things like that, the celebrations become even sweeter!

Local Municipality Minutes Burtrum City February 1, 2016 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 1st, 2016 by Mayor Strassburg. All members answered roll call.

Minutes of the January 4th meeting were approved on a motion by Beau Krueger and seconded

by Anna Payne. Upon vote motion carried.

Finance report was read and approved on a motion by Deb Van-

Havermaet and seconded by Kevin Wunderlich. All members voted in favor. Motion carried. Checks number 7497 thru 7501 were approved for payment on a motion by Beau Krueger and seconded by Anna Payne. Upon vote motion carried.

The tearing down properties in town were discussed. Lawyer will be contacted.

Under new business, the alleys in town were discussed. We will contact a lawyer about closing three that are not needed.

The clerk’s position was tabled until next month.

The clerk presented the Council with the 2015 financial report.

State Fair and Farm Bureau Federation Accepting Century Farm Applications Deadline is April 1

Minnesota families who have owned their farms for 100 years or more may apply for the 2016 Century Farms Program. Produced by the Minnesota State Fair in conjunction with the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation, the Century Farms Program was created to promote agriculture and honor historic family farms in the state. More than 10,000 Minnesota farms have been honored since the program began in 1976.

Family farms are recognized as Century Farms when they meet three requirements. The farm must be: 1) at least 100 years old according to authentic land records; 2) in continuous family ownership for at least 100 years (continuous residence on the farm is not required); and 3) at least 50 acres.

A commemorative certificate signed

by State Fair Board of Managers President Sharon Wessel, Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation President Kevin Paap and Governor Mark Dayton will be awarded to qualifying families, along with an outdoor sign signifying Century Farm status.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Spear Fishing

Using a spear to get a family’s supply of fish was the accepted method.

The original spears were made in blacksmith shops.

They were of varying quality from being actually well formed and attractive to a haphazard gathering mixture of tines with barbs, which kept the speared fish on the spear.

Spears used in the fish houses were usually formed with greater precision and more temper in the metal, which kept their sharp points for a longer period of time. A spear used in the creeks usually was of lesser quality, with less temper, so it would bend and not break when banged into a rock on the bottom of the river. Spears used in the fish house usually had about a 5 foot handle and those made for the creeks had a handle of 8 or more feet.

The fish harvested with a spear were used for fresh eating, along with smoking and canning. Fish obtained from creeks were usually salted and smoked, since they were referred to as rough fish, the taste and quality required additional processing in order to be made more eatable. After the smoking was complete some households canned the fish, which made them taste like smoked salmon.

My grandfather walked to his fish house 6 days per week. It was ¾ of a mile across a field and through a wooded area.

The snow depth varied with the winter and it was frequently well below zero. He wore a long sheepskin coat, felt shoes and 4 buckle overshoes. The coat and boots were heavy, but they kept him warm. He usually carried at least one fish home every day. They were either Northern Pike for us to eat or they were Dog Fish for the chickens to enjoy. The best week that I recall him having included a 17 pound Northern on Monday, a 21 pound Northern on Wednesday and on Saturday he speared a Northern which wouldn’t fit through the hole in the fish house. He thought it was about 35 pounds.

Spearing Suckers in the spring usually involved cleaning, salting and smoking about ½ a gunny sack of fish. That was the desired number, since that is about all that the families could smoke, eat and can without spoilage. I must comment that the farm cats and yard chickens really enjoyed the abundance of fish guts. They spent a lot of time chasing each other around the yard thinking that the one they were chasing had a better looking treat than they could pick up off of the pile. They were fun to watch.

My grandfather and his brother, Hugo had a continuing contest to see who could spear the largest fish each week. Hugo had the advantage of living about 150 feet from his fish house. Each Sunday before the noon meal, they sat in their easy chairs, smoking their curved pipes, filled with Prince Albert Tobacco and spoke of their past week’s success. It went like this: “got a 7 pounder this week and missed two.”

“Ya, I got two.” “Hmmm,” puff, puff, “been cold.” “Ya, looks like snow,” puff, puff, silence.

Advancing Farm to Institution in Minnesota Getting Minnesota apples, tomatoes, and other locally grown foods on the menus of schools and other institutions such as hospitals, long term care facilities and childcare centers requires crosssector partnerships, community support and relationship building. Central Minnesota is one of four regional Farm to Institution Networking events taking place across the state between now and April.

The aim is to attract buyers and growers from across the central region to community host St. Joseph, with the support from a number of regional partners. The Central MN event is scheduled to be held March 7 from 9:00-2:00, at the College of St. Benedict and is open for anyone interested to attend.

The workshops are designed to meet the needs of the region and strengthen connections to advance partnerships between local farmers and community institutions. Farm to Institution builds strong communities, healthy people and resilient local farms, creating a “win-win” for all parties. This year’s gatherings build on earlier rounds of farmer-buyer networking events facilitated by Renewing the Countryside and the University of Minnesota Extension’s Farm to Cafeteria

workshops. Over the years, successful farmer-buyer relationships developed at these events have led to successful, ongoing Farm to Institution projects, and made accessible current information about local food purchasing regulations and good agricultural practices.

These events are coordinated by Renewing the Countryside in partnership with the Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota, the Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships, Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, the Minnesota Department of Health, many local partners, and are funded, in part, by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

As you hit the near-freezing water, you’ll gasp for breath and begin to hyperventilate. Don’t thrash. Remember what Giesbrecht calls the 1-10-1 principle: ‘‘One minute to get control of your breathing. Ten minutes of meaningful movement. One hour before you become unconscious.’’

Take that first minute to slow your breath. Then look around: Where is the thickest ice? Usually, you’ll want to turn to face the way you came. In that direction, the ice was strong enough to hold you (until it wasn’t). Stretch your arms atop the surface. Flutter-kick your feet until your body is horizontal, like a swimmer’s. Kick harder, using your hands and arms to pull yourself out. Roll away from the hole, and then crawl until you can safely stand.

There is a medical aphorism that says, ‘‘Nobody is dead until warm and dead.’’ Once your core body temperature drops to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, you will be officially hypothermic. Below 86 degrees, you will probably be unconscious, but not necessarily lifeless.

People have been successfully revived from frigid states as low as 56.7 degrees, a temperature at which bodies exhibit the clinical signs of death, including no pulse or breathing.

You might live for hours after you pass out if you can avoid drowning, but that requires some planning. After falling in, you will have about 10 minutes before your muscle and nerve fibers become too cold to function. If, after sev-
