Life isn’t always funny, but a sense of humor always helps -By Harvey Mackay John Cleese, the English actor and co-founder of Monty Python fame, is known for his expertise in business communications. He said: “If I can get you to laugh with me, you'll like me better, which makes you more open to my ideas. And if I can persuade you to laugh at the particular point I make, by laughing at it, you acknowledge the truth.”

I agree wholeheartedly. I strongly believe having a sense of humor is an important attribute for success and happiness. Since April is National Humor Month, I’ve packaged up some of my favorite stories that illustrate important business principles.

The loaded minivan pulled into the only remaining campsite. Four youngsters leaped from the vehicle and began feverishly unloading gear and setting up a tent. Two kids then rushed off with their dad to gather firewood. Two others helped their mother set up the camp stove and cooking utensils. A nearby camper marveled to the father, “That is some impressive display of teamwork.”

“Actually,” the father replied, “I have a system. No one goes to the bathroom until camp is set up.”

Without faith in yourself and others, success is impossible.

At the end of a particularly frustrating practice one day, a football coach dismissed his players, yelling, “Now all you idiots, go take a shower!”

All but one player headed toward the locker room. The coach glared and asked why he was still there. “You told all the idiots to go, sir,” the player replied, “and there sure seems to be a lot of them. But I am not an idiot.”

Confident? You bet. And smart enough to coach that team some day.

Having spent my entire career in sales, I know how discouraging it is to hear “NO” over and over again. But a salesperson who thinks negatively couldn’t sell life jackets on the Titanic.

It reminds me of the old grizzly veteran sales rep who runs into the new kid on the block.

“How are you getting along?” he asked the new sales rep.

“Not so good,” came the disgusted reply.

“I've been insulted in every place I made a call.”

“That's funny,” said the seasoned rep.

“I've been on the road 40 years. I've had doors slammed in my face, my samples flung in the street, been tossed downstairs and manhandled by security. But insulted – never!”

I received an interesting letter from one of my cronies that read: “I have to share with you my favorite story about my six-year-old grandson. He is in first grade, and we were discussing the reason he got in trouble at school.

“He replied, ‘I was disrespectful to my teacher.’

“I asked if it was wrong and he said, ‘Yes, I shouldn’t have done it.’

“I said that we all make mistakes, and it’s okay to make mistakes if we learn from them.

People who learn from their mistakes are smart, and those that don’t are stupid.”

“Matthew thought for a while and then said, ‘I’ve got to make a lot of mistakes, so I can get really smart.’”

Honesty is not only the best policy, it’s the guiding principle that inspires trust.

A minister announced to the congregation that the topic for next week’s sermon would be integrity. In preparation for the message, the congregation was asked to read the wisdom of Solomon, found in Proverbs 32.

The next Sunday the minister began by asking the congregation how many had read the assigned scripture. Several hands went up.

“Just as I thought,” said the minister.

“There is no 32nd chapter in the book of Proverbs. Therefore, the need for this sermon on honesty.”

Let me close with a wonderful story about Albert Einstein, who had a great sense of humor in addition to his superior intellect. His driver usually waited for his boss at the back of the lecture hall.

One day, the driver said to the famous scientist, “Boss, I’ve heard you give that speech so many times I could give it in my sleep.”

At the next lecture stop, Einstein and the driver switched places, with Einstein sitting at the back, dressed in the driver's uniform. The driver delivered the lecture flawlessly. At the end of the lecture, a member of the audience asked a detailed scientific question about some of the subject matter. Without missing a beat, the “lecturer” replied, “Well, the answer to that question is so simple, I’m going to let my driver who is sitting in the back answer it.”

Mackay’s Moral: Humor isn’t funny business – it’s fun business.

In the 1950's. there were new health care insurance options and more care options available. The War created many new treatments, since there had been a large number of injured veterans to test new procedures. Banks and local co-ops along with employer group health plans began to appear. It suddenly became more attractive to obtain health care when you didn't have to pay the whole bill yourself.

In 1965 medicare came into our lives. It was a great help for those who were previously too old or too sick to buy insurance. Since it paid about 80% of the healthcare bills, it opened the door for seniors to buy an individual plan to pick up most of the 20% that medicare didn't pay. When comparing this to the health care options available before 1950, it's like riding in a plane or walking to a destination.

Today, we can't get our mail or watch TV without being harassed by printed material or someone making statements to purposely confuse senior citizens about the current medicare advantage plan they currently have.

Statements like you can get a free medicare plan and that it gives all of these additional benefits for nothing. “Just let us look up your zip code.” In some cases the announcers are willing to appear rather stupid just to get your attention. It is actually making a ridiculous impression about the insurance industry, similar to some car insurance companies.

If you have some questions about your coverage, call your local agent. He has heard from many of his clients asking, “what are they talking about?” Actually, it is just noise to get you to buy your policy from them.

So, when was the last time you had a doctor appointment? I'm betting that it was sometime during the last 6 months.

Sometimes the appointment was because you felt that a semi-annual appointment was needed because the media convinced you that regular doctor appointments were needed to make you aware of potential health problems. It seems that it is almost impossible to leave the doctor's without being informed of another potential health problem that requires further tests and treatments. It does however, offer another piece of information that you can add to those frequent conversations comparing health issues with your friends. It's interesting to find out who has had new knees and hips and who had the most difficult recovery. There is possibly a need for subjects that are more beneficial to the listener, like the weather, politics, car repair, grocery and gas prices, kids, grand kids, childhood memories and whether the Twins were going to win any games this year. Choices.

If you can remember your grandparents and their medical histories occurring before the 1950's, it wasn't uncommon for the men to totally avoid the doctor. If they did see a doctor, it was to treat an injury that greater than one could be treated at home. There were many home cures that were on the shelf in the celler way, that would give some relief until most of the pain went away. This form of treatment usually worked. My Grandpa was 66 years old when he hit himself in the head with an ax, which not only necessitated the first doctor visit, but also required his first

Everett G. Scherping

Everett G. Scherping, age 85 of Freeport, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 4 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Dan Walz officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 3 and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday, April 4 at the church in Freeport. St. Joseph’s Men’s Society and Goldenaires Senior Citizens will pray at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Everett Gerald Scherping was born July 27, 1936 in Freeport, Minnesota to Bernard and Marcella (Pogatchnik) Scherping. He graduated from Holdingford High School and joined the army afterwards. He married Beverly Pierskalla on June 21, 1960 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel, Minnesota.

He worked for Sterner Industries in Winsted and Meyer Electric in Melrose before opening his own shop – Everett Scherping Electric. Everett and Beverly ran their business for 45 years. He was a man of many talents and stories – always helping out when needed and cracking a joke while doing so. Everett was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Freeport. He belonged to several organizations including the Roving Hillbillies Snowmobile Club, Freeport Lions, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, and several other various church boards. He will be greatly missed by his family.

Survivors include his children, Russell (significant other, Lisa Davis) Scherping of Hugo, Michelle (John) Potter of Pillager, Shawn (Paula) Scherping of Winsted, Kurt (Pam) Scherping of Freeport, Robin (Leo) Schwieters of Rogers; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; brothers, Virgil (Elaine) Scherping of Winsted, Daniel (Evelyn) Scherping of Cedar, Tom (Anita) Scherping of Helena, Montana; sister, Linda (Jim) Breth of Holdingford; and sister-inlaw, Aggie Scherping of Winsted Everett was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beverly on December 30, 2019; grandson, Brandon Scherping; and brother, Arthur Scherping.

Serving as casket bearers will be Clinton Scherping, Dylan Scherping, Cody Scherping, Abe Schwieters, Erin Stevens, and Megan Eull.

Randall D. “Randy” From, age 64 of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 28, 2022 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m.

Sunday, April 3 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rebecca Thomas officiating. A lunch will follow at the Lynx National Golf Course in Sauk Centre.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Randall Dwain From was born May 2, 1957 in Shakopee, Minnesota to Jack and Darlene (Herrgott) From. Randy grew up in Shakopee and graduated from Shakopee High School.

He was a truck driver his entire life, and in his younger years, enjoyed racing at Raceway Park and Elko Speedway. He was united in marriage to Jane Newstrom on March 9, 2012 in Hawaii.

Randy and Jane moved to their dream house on Sauk Lake in Sauk Centre in 2015. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and dog lover who enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, boating, and spending time on the lake with family and friends. His witty sense of humor and love of a good joke will be missed.

Survivors include his loving wife, Jane From of Sauk Centre; children, Jennifer (Travis) Larson of Onamia, Jessica Gonzalez of Eagan, Justin From of Waverly, Ginelle (Ashley) Whiting of Burnsville, and Max Newstrom of Denver, Colorado; three grandchildren, Alaina, Matthew, and Brennon; brothers and sisters, Tama (Ed) Vohnoutka, Daniel (Janice) From, Jolene (David) Schmitt, Carol Jordan, and Kevin (Nancy) From; and dog, Boomer.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents; and dogs, Toby, Chupa, Timber, and Louie.

Kathleen A. “Kathy” Jonas, age 74 of Albany, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota, with her family by her side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area in Albany. The Christian Mothers will pray at 6 p.m. Friday evening at the gathering area.

Kathleen Ann Koopmeiners was born June 2, 1947 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Edwin and Winnifred (Roering) Koopmeiners. She graduated from Melrose High School and furthered her education at St. Cloud Business College. Kathy worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses prior to marriage. She was united in marriage to Raymond “Butch” Jonas, Jr. on May 22, 1971 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. The couple lived and farmed south of Albany. Kathy worked at DBL Labs for 15 years and at the local grocery store in the bakery and deli departments. Kathy made hundreds of beautiful wedding cakes for family and friends for nearly 30 years.

She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and the Christian Mothers.

Kathy enjoyed making wedding cakes, flowers, working in her many flower beds, sewing pajamas for her grandkids, and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her children, Randy Jonas (Lisa) of Sauk Centre and Barb Jonas (Jerry) of Albany; six grandchildren, Cody, Kaitlyn, Karlee, Hailea, Gabrielle, and Leander; greatgrandchildren, Willoe, Kinzlee, Gryfinn, Haizlee, and one on the way; brothers and sisters, Donald (Kathleen) Koopmeiners of Long Prairie, Dennis (Deb) Koopmeiners of St. Francis, Sharon (Tom) Fischer of Albany, Carol (Joe) Braun of St. Joseph, Charles (Deanna) Koopmeiners of Grey Eagle, Ronald (Janet) Koopmeiners of Albany, and Mark (Ginny) Koopmeiners of Upsala; and many nieces and nephews.

Lisa F. Bailey

Lisa F. Bailey, age 50 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held Sunday, March 27 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter officiating. Interment was held Monday, March 28 at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Ward Springs.

Lisa Faye Bailey Hendershot was born May 25, 1971 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Joseph Loss and Judith “Judy” Grythe. Lisa grew up and attended school in the cities, until moving to Sauk Centre with her family where she then attended high school.

As a child, she liked horseback riding and spending time with her brothers. She loved all animals. Lisa worked as an aide at the St. Michael’s Nursing Home for several years before her mother purchased the Ding Dong Cafe where she then worked until 2017.

After Judy sold the café, Lisa became a caregiver for Alternative Senior Care, while she started her battle with cancer as well as caring for her mother who was then also diagnosed with cancer shortly after.

Lisa attended Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Prior to becoming ill, Lisa enjoyed the outdoors such as camping trips, hunting with her children, gardening, and taking care of their small hobby farm. Lisa spent a lot of time canning food and in the barn with her chickens. She was always busy with something or taking naps with her best friend “Jake”, he is 14 years old and has yet to leave her side. Lisa was also greatly involved with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Nicole Bailey of Sauk Centre and her children, Makenna, Brady, and Kade, Chase Hendershot (Summer) of Sturgeon Lake, and Chelsy Hendershot (Nathan) of Alexandria; fiancé, Bob Ritter of Sauk Centre; step children, Rebekah (Kurtis) Stone of Cushing and their children, Kaylee, Avery, Addison, and Camden, Corey Ritter (Jenny) of Sauk Centre and their children, Emma, Noah, and Lyla, and Casey Ritter (Anni) of Brooten and their children, Skylar, Rorri, Hazel, and Austin; brother, Michael (Emily) Bailey of Sauk Centre; and many aunts, uncles, nephew, nieces, and cousins.

Lisa was preceded in death by her mother, Judy Bailey; father, Joseph Loss; brother, Troy Loss; and grandparents, Ervin and Faye Grythe.

John “Jack” Kortan

John “Jack” Kortan, age 83, born May, 25, 1938 to John and Doris (Johnson) Kortan of Sauk Centre, MN died with his family at his side on Monday, March 21, 2022 of complications with pneumonia and heart disease.

Jack worked on the family farm until he moved to the Twin Cities where he laid cable for the telephone company and met his wife Dorothy (Brown).

After a couple of relocations with the telephone company, Jack and Dorothy moved back to Sauk Centre where they raised their six children.

Jack founded and operated Jacks Auto Parts, where he salvaged and repaired cars and trucks and taught his sons auto mechanics. He also worked part-time at Pearson Ford Garage and drove bus for Sauk Centre Public School District.

Jack demonstrated his ingenuity when he built his own car crusher to use at his salvage business. The crusher was built from the ground up, along with his good friend, Vernie Schmitz, who had an essential role utilizing his extensive welding experience on the project.

In addition, he used his business-savvy to start a new business venture, a tree moving and stump grinding company, with good friend and another local businessman, Duane (Pete) Peterson.

Jack loved to build and race cars and was well known to the racing industry. In the early years of racing in Sauk Centre, he was president of Centre Raceway Racing Association at the fairgrounds.

Being an avid deer and moose hunter and fisherman took him across the country and Canada in pursuit of the big one. He loved to teach his grandchildren how to hunt, fish and drive tractors.

After Jack sold Jacks Auto Parts to Rocky and Diane Karnes, he built a home on Sauk Lake where he loved sharing the view of the lake with his wife, Dorothy of 60+ years. He then started Sauk Lake Enterprises, a multi functioning company that include restoring his John Deere tractor collection, building roads and docks, developing land and a few other innovative projects.

Jack is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sister, Shirley Opsal of California; sons, David “Kavy” (Tami Notch) Kortan, Doug (Faith) Kortan, John Kortan; daughters, Annette Borsack of California, Susan Stevens; 6 grandsons and 2 granddaughters: Jeremy, Jason, Jessica, Christopher, Justin of Wisconsin, Jack and Eddy of California, Cyrus; and 3 great-grandsons and 8 great-granddaughters Proceeded in death by his parents; son, Dale; brother Gerald (Jerry); daughter-in-law, Krissy.

A memorial service/celebration of life will be held in early June.

The Grey Eagle Community Handbell Choir will give a free concert at the Grey Eagle Library on Saturday, April 9, at 10:30 a.m.

The group, formed in 2018, is made up of local folks who enjoy making music together. Led by director, Robert Kutter, they practice weekly at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church. Due to the pandemic, the choir did not rehearse from March 2020 until October of 2022.

The concert program will include three sacred Lenten songs and additional secular numbers.

The genesis of the group occurred through the Grey Eagle Community Choir when Carole Austing offered two octaves of handbells for sale. The Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club purchased the bells and then in 2019, the handbell choir received donations from the Swanville Lions, Swanville VFW 6037, Swanville American Legion, Magnifi

Any sign of leakage or excessive bounce indicates that it is time for replacement. Mileage wise at about 50,000 miles or so they will start to lose performance. If you were to drive a vehicle with new units then drive yours, you would probably see a noticeable difference. This difference can mean shorter stopping times, better handling, and a smoother ride. For your vehicle with 110,000 miles and five years, it is time for replacement.

Along the way keep all records of anything done to the car to show the care you have given it. A well cared for vehicle will bring more than a neglected one. Follow the severe service maintenance recommendations in the owner’s manual and when things break, have them fixed. If you have done none of these things or just a few you can still get good value for your car. A clean car will usually bring more money faster than a dirty one and often people buy on impulse because of looks alone. A complete professional detail is usually in the $100 range. Once it’s clean and ready to sell, set your price. Selling it privately will usually bring the most money. To get a good estimate of what you should ask, check the local papers and car lots for similar mileage and condition vehicles. This will give you a real-world estimate for the location you are in as prices can vary between markets.

Burtrum City • March 7, 2022 The Burtrum City Council meeting was called to order at 7 pm on Monday, March 7, 2022 by Council Member Sharon Erickson in absence of Mayor Ron Strassburg.

In attendance was Sharon Erickson, Sara Macho, Mitchell Bruggenthies, Chad Landowski and Laura Horvath.

Minutes from the February 7, 2022 meeting were read and approved; a motion to approve was made by Sara Macho, and seconded

by Chad Landowski, upon vote motion was carried and minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved; the city discussed current bills/invoices; finance report was accepted, and bills were paid, with a motion made by Sharon Erickson and seconded by Sara Macho Current Bills: Sheriff Bill New Business: Building permit for residential home was approved, with a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded

Burglary: March 18, 2022: Deputy Aaron Wells responded to a burglary complaint in Spring Hill Twp. Thieves broke into and stole numerous items from several sheds on a farm site. The burglary and theft occurred sometime between December 1, 2021, and March 18. The owner is compiling a list of missing items, but initially reported the loss of numerous hand tools, a weed whip, and chainsaw. Once Deputy Wells has the complete list, he will be able to establish a value.

Theft: March 20, 2022: Deputy Andrew Troen and his FTO Paul Breth responded to a theft complaint in Avon Twp. Several work trucks and containers at the site had paddle locks cut and items taken. The thieves once again took numerous hand tools. They had also piled up other items in the back of a truck and were perhaps planning on returning. The thieves left behind their bolt cutters.

March 23, 2022: Deputy Zach Milne responded to an injured animal call. A caller reported a young, injured bald eagle on Co. 17 near Co. Rd. 168 in Millwood Twp. Dispatcher Brianna Arnett contacted the Minnesota Raptor Center to see what should be done. They tried to locate a volunteer to pick it up. In the meantime Deputy Milne went to the scene and secured the eagle using his jacket. He brought it back to St. Cloud where Dispatcher Arnett volunteered to drive it to the Raptor Center in St. Paul.

City voted on approval for the Heritage Club raffle, with a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Sharon Erickson Resolution approving State of Minnesota Reestablishing Precinct Boundaries and Designation of Polling Place Per M.S204B.14 SUBD 3 & M.S. 204B.16 SUBD 1 - Whereas Precinct 1 will encompass the entire CITY OF BURTRUM in Minnesota Legislative District 5B and Minnesota Congressional District 7 – Whereas, the polling place for the CITY OF BURTRUM remains the Burtrum Community Center/City Hall, 115 Main Street West, Burtrum MN – The CITY COUNCIL OF BURTRUM, MN re-establishes this location as the designated polling place for Precinct 1 in THE CITY OF BURTRUM in accordance with Minnesota Statutes 204B.16. Motion to approve was made by Sara Erickson and seconded by Sharon Erickson, motion carried.

Old Business: No old business discussed.

Since no further topics needed to be addressed the meeting was adjourned; with a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, upon vote motion carried and meeting was adjourned.

A 16 pound bag of 29-3-4 contains almost a half a pound of phosphorus.

I really hate algae. It's ugly and when it decomposes it consumes more oxygen.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce I have lots of teaching DVD series in my office. I have acquired them over the years and have been through all of them at least once and many more than once. One in particular has always intrigued me. The title is “Not a Fan," and you may be thinking what on earth is that all about? So, as my purpose in these articles is to help you, the reader, to be encouraged to live a godly life. Our world is so complicated, and our lives tend to be so full of “things” this world has to offer, instead of basing our lives on Jesus Christ.

So, in “Not a Fan” Kyle Idleman stresses the fact that a true believer is not just idle or simply watching others do all the work. He refers to Christianity as a football game. In the game of football there are two kinds of people.

First of all, there is the two teams. They practice hard all week, and then they come together on game day and compete. The other kind of person who is at the game but not playing, just watching is the fan. This is the person who comes to the game to watch. They may have popcorn and soda or a candy bar to support the local booster club, but for all practical purposes, they are only watching.

Kyle’s objective in this teaching is to get all of us to understand that we need to be in the game so to speak. We need to “practice” hard (reading and studying scriptures), so that we can endure the game till the end. Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Look also at 1 Corinthians 9:25-27 “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.

They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
