I love the story of the little clock that almost worried itself to death. It worked itself into a frazzle thinking about how often it would have to tick in the coming year.

“I’ll have to tick two times per second, which means 120 times a minute, 7,200 times every hour, and 172,800 every day!” Then it went further – 1,209,600 every week, and a whopping 63 million times, give or take, over the next 12 months! The more it thought about that number, the more worried it became. Finally, anxiety overtook the little clock and it stopped ticking.

And it was miserable. So it consulted a psychiatrist. “I just don’t have what it takes to tick that often,” it complained.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Flu all been constantly reminded by virtually every news report that there is a new flu in town.

It’s Covid-19 or Chinese flu and it is swiftly spreading across America.

It appears to be a new model of flu that has changed to avoid some of previously successful flu treatments from the past. We know very little about it, since it’s symptoms vary from person to person. Sometimes there are no symptoms, but in other cases it takes on the recognizable appearance of pneumonia. It almost seems like trying to slap a fly with your open hand.

We are told that we should stay 6 feet away from other people. We shouldn’t touch another person’s hands.

We should avoid any surface that has been touched by another. We should We

have

confine our family in our homes for 2 weeks. Don’t touch money. Be sure that you have as many canned vegetables for about a year along with every egg, loaf of bread, container of milk and as much toilet paper as you can store in your cubby holes and under your beds and couches. The first part of this paragraph is about the suggested ways to avoid the new flu and the last part of the paragraph is evidently what some people think what was said in the first part of the paragraph. Confusing? What were they hearing.

Something that this hoarding has shown us is that you can freeze milk and if you have enough toilet paper, no matter how bad the flu effects your lungs, you can comfortably consume excessive amounts of milk, even though it may adversely effect your digestive system. Good planning.

In 2009, we were faced with the Swine Flu. It caused 213,000 to be hospitalized and deaths in excess of 18,000. And then it went away.

There are links for teachers and educational materials.

This created huge problems, since there was not enough workers available due to being affected by the flu and the mortuaries were filled far beyond capacity. Bodies sometimes were not removed for several days. One solution to the problem was creating large holes to create mass graves. In some cases, if there was a new closed grave, a body was deposited in the new grave above the existing body. A method of saving the cost of final disposal. The Spanish Flu seemed to just go away.

We have flu each year, which effects about 10% of the population, creating 100,000 hospitalizations along with over 31,000 deaths each year.

As a comparison, from 1970 to 2016, over 46,000,000 abortion deaths occurred. No comment.

The coronavirus has been a part of our lives during our entire lifetimes. It has the ability to change itself, allowing it to spread quickly as a new “bug.” Some of our common household cleaners have

had information on their packaging saying that they were effective against coronavirus going back many years. Do they work against the current virus, I guess we’ll find out.

Something I find interesting is that we had Spanish Flu, Swine Flu, Bird Flu and now Chinese flu. All of these names were related to their origination. Today’s flu originated in China, but there is a lot of criticism for naming it in relation to where it came from. What next???

The doctor asked, “How many ticks must you tick at one time?” The clock replied, “Just one.” The doctor suggested, “How about using your energy to just tick one tick at a time, and I think you’ll be just fine.”

So the little clock wound itself up, decided to take one tick at a time and ticked happily ever after. Taking life one tick at a time, instead of worrying what will happen down the road, will buy you time that you would have wasted with untimely fears.

Upsala Knowlege Bowl team of seniors had a fantastic season, earning 1st and 2nd place medals in the two preliminary meets held at CLC in Staples, sponsored by Sourcewell. They placed 4th at the Regional meet on February 21 held at CLC in Staples, which earned them a spot in the State Tournament.

Pastor appointed to Grey Eagle United Methodist Church The District Superintendent of the North Star District of the United Methodist Church, Minnesota Annual Conference, has announced that it is the intention of Bishop Bruce Ough to appoint the Reverend Lori Nielsen as minister of the Grey Eagle and Sauk Centre United Methodist Churches. Acting on behalf of the congregation, the Staff Parish Relations Committee has confirmed the Bishop’s intention.

Nielsen will begin her appointment on June 28, 2020. She is married to Chip who is also a pastor and will retire soon.

The Nielsens have one daughter, Emily.

Neilsen has an undergraduate degree in accounting and a Master of Divinity degree from the Iliff School of Theology

in Denver. She has served both small and large congregations in Minnesota and has been a chaplain for a large care center.

“I am passionate about bringing the words of scripture to bear on our lives today when I’m preaching and teaching, helping churches live out their calling and helping people live lives of meaningful discipleship,” said Nielsen.

Nielsen enjoys preaching, visitation, and working with stewardship and generosity. She sees herself as a servant leader who believes the church should be a place where people of differing perspectives can come together as we live out Jesus’ teaching to love one another, treat others as we would be treated and make disciples of Christ.

Stearns County Sheriff deputies responded to the 34000 block of Smiley Drive in Avon Township on Saturday, March 21, 2020 around 3:56 p.m. for a shed fire.

The homeowner, Brian Gertken, 47, of Avon, reported hearing a boom and then seeing his outdoor wood boiler and a 30’x60’ shed on fire. Mr. Gertken also reported there was a barn nearby with cattle in it.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, In light of recent events in our country, do you have suggestions for things people should think about and plan for if they get laid off from their jobs?

-Sam Dear Sam, It’s no secret that things are shutting down all across the world. If your workplace has closed its doors and isn’t offering pay, then it’s time to regroup and get some things in order. The thought of being without a paycheck can be overwhelming, but a little thought and planning can help you get though times like these.

Start living on a budget, if you aren’t doing so already. Making a monthly budget will show you exactly where your money is going. Without it, you can’t use every dollar to its fullest potential, because you don’t even know how much money you have to work with. Plus, your budget will show places where you can cut back and save money.

If you don’t have any income right now, make a budget based on the amount of money on hand. If you have $600 left to your name, budget out exactly where each of those dollars will go. It’s time to squeeze every last penny out of what you’ve got. If you still have cash coming in from a spouse’s job or some other source, then adjust your budget to reflect that. Maybe the two of you usually bring in a combined $5,000 a month. Adjust your budget to live off that one income for the time being.

When the going gets tough, you need to focus on the things you really need to survive—food, utilities, shelter, and transportation. I call these the Four Walls.

If there’s any money left over after you

take care of the Four Walls, make a list of what else you need to pay, and tackle those in order of importance. Reach out to anyone you can’t pay, and explain the situation. They might be able to work something out, but they can’t help if they don’t know. Be up front with them, and pray for the best.

When you’re just trying to make it to another day, you don’t need to pay extra on debt. Instead, focus on piling up cash. Once life gets back to normal and everything is okay, you can pick up where you left off with your debt snowball. If it’s within your budget to keep making minimum payments on your debt, go for it. But the Four Walls come first. This is also the time to sell anything and everything you don’t need to make some extra cash.

With so much being shut down right now, there might not be as many traditional ways to make extra money. So, look into driving for Amazon, delivering takeout food, or dropping off grocery orders. Even if one of those doesn’t work out, you can still take up odd jobs around your neighborhood. Be on the lookout for opportunities that will add a few extra bucks to your pocket. Don’t forget to cut back on unnecessary expenses, either. Stop or pause your subscriptions.

Call your cable, internet, and cellular providers to see if there’s anything they’ll do to work with you.

Finally, in times of real need, don’t be too proud to ask for a helping hand.

Many churches and community groups in your area exist for situations just like this.

Motor vehicle crashes, strikes utility pole

Stearns County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a single vehicle crash on County Road 3 West, just north of County Road 17 in Holding Township around 9:20 p.m. Monday night, March 23, 2020.

Jeffrey Fuchs, 43, of Holdingford, was southbound on County Road 3 West

in a 2003 Sterling tree service vehicle pulling a trailer. The vehicle partially entered the west ditch prior to Mr. Fuchs over-correcting the vehicle. He entered the east ditch and struck a utility pole.

The utility pole belonged to Minnesota Power.

Mr. Fuchs was not injured.

DEED Creating Emergency Loan Program for Minnesota Small Businesses Thousands of businesses negatively impacted by COVID-19 could be helped.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is creating an emergency loan program to help Minnesota small business owners who need immediate assistance to meet their families’ basic needs during COVID-19 closures.

The loan program was created under the Small Business Assistance Executive Order 20-15 announced by Governor Tim Walz on March 23. The loan program is intended to help businesses temporarily closed under Executive Order 20-04, later clarified by Executive Order 20-08, which stopped onsite customer dining at restaurants and bars and closed an extensive list of other small businesses whose owners may not have adequate cash flow to withstand temporary closure.

“Over the last week, we’ve heard from many of Minnesota’s small businesses who are facing significant hardships because of the COVID-19 crisis,” said Governor Tim Walz. “Small businesses are the backbone of our communities, and now more than ever, we’re looking to creative solutions like DEED’s emergency loan program to help them weather these extraordinarily difficult times.”

“We know that this emergency loan program is just one tool businesses will need to leverage to stay afloat,” said DEED Commissioner Steve Grove. “It’s an important one because it will get cash flowing quickly to the small Minnesota businesses that need it most.”

Executive Order 20-15 directs DEED to create a Small Business Emergency Loan Program by making available $30 million from special revenue funds. These dollars will be used by DEED’s lender network to make loans of between $2,500 and $35,000 for qualifying small businesses. The loans will be 50% forgivable, and offered at a 0% interest rate. financing becomes available to small businesses that received an emergency loan, such as federal funding, the emergency loan must be repaid. These emergency loans will be made by an existing network of lenders DEED works with across the state. Depending on the size of the loans offered to businesses, DEED estimates this emergency loan program will provide needed resources to between 1,200 and 5,000 businesses. DEED expects loan applications will available later this week through our lender network. Minnesota small businesses should send questions about this emergency loan program to ELP@state.mn.us.

The executive order also allows local units of government or lending partners which have a revolving loan fund to use those funds to issue loans to retail and service providers for the next 90 days. DEED estimates that up to $28 million in capital could be accessible through local revolving loan funds and local governments through this action. Local partners will be looking at ways to deploy these resources to support their local businesses.

Sidney A. “Sid” Lyon

Sidney A. “Sid” Lyon, age 95 of Grey Eagle, died Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at the V.A. Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A private graveside service will be held Saturday, March 28 at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Military Honors will be by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at a later date and posted on our website when restrictions are lifted.

Sidney Arthur Lyon was born April 20, 1924 in Wahpeton, North Dakota to Arthur and Mildred (Palmerton) Lyon. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was united in marriage to Rita Ostendorf on June 5, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle.

Sid farmed northwest of Grey Eagle until his retirement in May of 1989, but continued to assist on the farm for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle, Grey Eagle American Legion for 59 years, AMPI board for 25 years, Birchdale Township Clerk for over 25 years, and the Todd County Agricultural Board for 27 years.

Sid enjoyed carpentry and mechanic work, hunting, and loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his children, Arthur (MaryAnn) Lyon of Rice, Grace (Kenneth) Edgar of Sauk Centre, Sidney L. (Jo Ann) Lyon of Sauk Rapids, Dale (Ruth) Lyon of Melrose, Audrey (Don) Olmscheid of Paynesville, Roger Lyon of Villard, Allen (Anna) Lyon of Foley, Dennis (LeaAnn) Lyon of Sauk Centre, Joe (Cathy) Lyon of Holdingford, Mary (Ron) Guetter of Willmar, Judy (Dave) Haus of Sauk Rapids, David (Beth) Lyon of Marshall, Mike (Lori) Lyon of St. Joseph, Lloyd (Joan) Lyon of Rice, Tom (Meredith) Lyon of St. Joseph, and Nancy (Brian) Roske of Grey Eagle; 48 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Betty Holm of Sauk Centre, Joyce Kutzler of Clinton, Robert Ball of Fosston, and Leonard (Lois) Ball of Fosston.

Sid was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Lyon; parents; grandchildren, Mark Lyon, Linda Lyon, Doug Lyon, Grant Lyon, and Brady Lyon; brother, Allen Coats; brothersin-law, Gordon Holm and Rolland Kutzler; and sisters-in-law, Lois Ball and Helen Coats.

Serving as casket bearers will be Carter Lyon, Jon Lyon, Justin Haus, Sue Fossum, Abby Zaske, Danielle Lyon, Chris Lyon, and Dana Robinette. Cross bearer will be Cathy Lyon. Honorary bearers will be the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren of Sidney Lyon.

Initial COVID-19 impacts felt as many unknowns remain In a matter of weeks, the world and its economy have been turned upside down by the COVID-19 outbreak.

Every segment has been affected, some more than others.

Cruise lines have been shuttered, and airlines are still operating but with fewer passengers and huge financial losses that threaten their survival.

Main streets are eerily quiet, as are our roads and highways. That directly affects our local economy as restaurants and bars have been ordered to close.

With fewer people driving, either to work or for pleasure, the price of gasoline and diesel fuel have dropped precipitously, and in the short term that’s good. But, as gas has dropped below $2 per gallon, it has caused a financial hammer to fall on our ethanol industry.

With the wholesale price of gas around 70 cents and ethanol under a dollar per gallon, it doesn’t encourage the blending of our corn-based renewable fuel.

With demand down, the price of ethanol has fallen to levels never seen before.

Losses are mounting, and plants

will either be forced to slow production or shutter completely. As that happens, the demand for corn also decreases and the price offered for the grain will also fall. We have seen 20-cent declines in the price of corn in recent days as it has fallen under $3 a bushel, which is well below the cost of production.

As of Sunday, 169 confirmed cases have been reported in Minnesota, an increase of 22 from the previous day.

Our state recorded its first fatality over the weekend, that occurring in Ramsey County. Since this all started, a total of 19 patients have been hospitalized, and six are still currently receiving care, four of whom are in ICU. The remainder of those hospitalized are recovering at home.

In recent days, I have received numerous messages saying we need to increase state spending in a variety of different areas. Nearly all mention that we should utilize our state’s $1.5 billion surplus to cover these new or expanded initiatives. I’m not saying they aren’t worthwhile, but we need to have an honest conversation about the state budget. That much-publicized surplus is a PROJECTED surplus, meaning that if all spending and revenues that were thought to be accurate in February held true until the end of the biennium, we would have that much money left over.

Obviously, that’s not happening. In Minnesota, we’ve just passed two bills

Sandra (Gosiak) Kraemer Russell R. “Russ” Roelike S a n d r a ( G o s i a k ) Kraemer, 57 year old resident of Holdingford, MN died on Monday, March 16 at Mother of Mercy Nursing in Albany, A graveside service was held Thursday, March 19 at 3:00 P.M. at St. Francis Assisi cemetery near St. Francis Sandra Gosiak was born on February 15, 1963 in Little Falls to the late Ambrose and Martha (Psick) Gosiak. She attended and graduated from Little Falls Community High School. After high school she attended college for one year at the University of Minnesota and then later in the state of Louisiana. Sandra returned to Minnesota where she worked for Fingerhut, Benton County and most recently for Blattner Energy for the last 15 years. Sandra was united in marriage to Kevin Kraemer on August 21, 1998 in Lake Tahoe, CA. Sandra and her family enjoyed fishing, camping, and large family gatherings. She had great memories of her trips to Star Lake, Rainy Lake House Boats, and Florida. Sandra also enjoyed her time attending flea markets, concerts, parades, and church bazaars (especially the cake walks). Sandra was also a great cook and enjoyed being able to feed everyone.

that provided around $220 million in the fight against COVID-19, with more probably to come. And we’ve opened up the state’s unemployment insurance program to the thousands of laid-off workers who now qualify for immediate benefits. The biggest change, however, is what’s happening to state revenue.

With business activity slowing, sales tax receipts will also decrease markedly. That’s the immediate impact of the executive order closing bars and restaurants, but all business activity is being affected. Fewer people driving will mean lower gas tax receipts coming into the state. Lower incomes brought on by lay-offs will result in fewer income taxes being paid. And huge losses in the stock market will translate into capital gain losses, which also lower taxable incomes.

I think what’s been done so far to slow the virus is warranted. However, closing the state down completely except for essential businesses is going too far. How essential business is defined will be important. Our grocery stores need to stay open, and the truckers who keep those supply lines going are also extremely important. With spring coming, aren’t our implement dealers and repair shops also essential? What about our other agri-businesses that serve farmers with the crop inputs they need?

Russell R. “Russ” Roelike, age 37 of Melrose, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2020 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota. Russ was surrounded by family as he peacefully went home to be with the Lord and is now reunited with his brother.

A private family gathering was held Tuesday, March 24 followed by a graveside service at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. A Resurrection Mass will be scheduled at a later date.

Russell Roger Roelike was born December 1, 1982 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Margurite (Dobmeier) Roelike.

On June 26, 2010 he was united in marriage to Kayla Harne at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Russ worked at the grocery store in Melrose then transferred to the Sauk Centre Coborn’s where he worked until his diagnosis. He also helped his brothers, Ron and Randy with milking and farming.

Russ was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. He enjoyed helping on the farm, making wooden crafts, and watching and playing sports. Russ especially loved spending time with his wife, kids, family, and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Kayla Roelike of Melrose; children, Braden, Katelyn, and Cameron all of Melrose; parents, Joseph and Margurite Roelike of Melrose; brother, Randy Roelike of Melrose; sister Kristine (Sean) Anderson of Sauk Rapids; and nephews and niece, Carter, Makenzie, and Carson Anderson.

Russ was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Roelike; uncles, Marvin Dobmeier, Roger Dobmeier, and Cyril Wiechmann; grandparents, Frances and Othmar Roelike and Walter and Florina Dobmeier.

My point being, where does one draw the line on what’s important to keep operating? Three states have so far implemented this stay-in-place order, those being New York, California, and Illinois. All three have populations much larger than ours. The states of Kansas and Missouri have worked together to implement a similar order around the Kansas City area, but it’s only for the metro and surrounding areas and not the entire states. That makes sense to me, as an urban center with a much more dense population, would seem to be at greater risk of having the virus spread by human contact. \The entire world is fighting COVID-19 together. We pray the measures taken so far are effective and the virus peaks soon and begins to diminish.

The Bible tells us of two men who “went out from the presence of the Lord.”

One was Cain and the other Jonah. When Cain went out, the Lord left Him alone.

He chose not to go after him and bring him back into His presence. But when Jonah went out, the Lord did not choose to leave him alone. Why the difference? Cain was not one of the Lord’s - but Jonah was.

Jonah was disobedient to the calling of God but was willing to accept God’s discipline. He had a terrible time surrendering to God but God never left him because he did want God’s will for his life. God stayed with him and disciplined him because he accepted God’s plan for his life. Cain was different. He refused to honor God and do what was right. And God rejected him because he would not give God his best.

Dear Motor Medics, I’ve been having issues with my 2008 GMC Acadia.

The Service Engine Soon light comes on and also the Trac-Off and ABS lights come on and when they do the message center displays reduced power and I can’t drive because I have no throttle response. When I take this thing in to my shop it works for them because it only happens about once a week.

-Mike in Daytona, Florida Dear Mike, That’s a ton of stuff going on there but I suspect they might all be connected. Over the past year we have seen no less than 20 vehicles exhibit this set of symptoms and they all turned out to be the same, a failed throttle body. The throttle body is electric and is the part that regulates how much air enters the engine. There is no cable connecting the throttle pedal to the engine as in the past.

This system as you can imagine must be calibrated exactly and have sensors to make sure that the vehicle does not have unintended acceleration or throttle loss. When the engine computer senses a failure in any of the internal circuits the system goes into reduced engine power mode. It will need to be diagnosed to know for sure and if replaced make sure you keep a receipt for the work in case GM decides to recall it for safety reasons which could possibly make you eligible for a monetary reimbursement on repairs.

on the dash that reads “Engine Hot A/C off and the Check Engine light comes on at the same time. Once the car warms up I can shut the light off and clear the message if I cycle the ignition key. It has been doing this for over a year and my wife is getting nervous about it so I want to get it fixed.

-Tom in Ventura, California Dear Tom, We have seen this message a few times and although engine codes and messages should be something simple to diagnose they don’t always get diagnosed as easily as you could hope for.

The system needs to be diagnosed to know for sure what’s up but some of the things to check that can trip the codes are the lack of ability to read engine temperature due to a failed sensor or connection to it or an actual failure of the engine to reach proper operating temperature in a preset amount of time as determined by the engine computer software. Now the message reads Engine Hot, but that’s where it gets tricky because when the engine can’t reach proper temperature it’s often a failed thermostat and that makes the engine run cold, not hot. A strange situation for sure but it’s just one of the fun things we mechanics get to deal with everyday on our shops.

A Pet Funny

A pretty lonely guy decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet.

After some discussion, he decided on a centipede, which came in a little white box to use for its house. He took the centipede home, found a good location for the box home, and then decided he would start off by taking his new pet to a restaurant to have dinner.

So he asked the centipede in the box, “Would you like to go to McDonald’s with me to have dinner?” But there was no answer from his new pet.

me?” But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet.

So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation. He decided to ask him one more time; this time putting his face up against the centipede’s house and shouting, “Hey, in there!

A little voice came out of the box: “I heard you the first time! I’m putting on my shoes!!”
