Wright Way,” writes that the key to their intense arguments was not driven by anger but rather a commitment of freeflowing information – a valuable tool for innovation.

As Wilbur Wright put it, “Honest argument is merely a process of mutually picking the beams and motes out of each other’s eyes so both can see clearly.” Always seek useful truth from both sides. Or as Wilbur added: “After I get hold of a truth, I hate to lose it again, and I like to sift all the truth out before I give up on an error.”

Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde supported the Wright brothers’ logic when he said: “The well-bred contradict other people. The wise contradict themselves.”

In other words, it’s fine to change your mind after listening to all sides of an argument. There may be issues you didn’t consider, or information that you were unaware of. There may just be a better way to deal with a problem that you hadn’t considered.

I’ve always felt that debate or arguing is healthy. Whenever I’ve had two employees disagreeing over something, I’ve always tried to listen with an open mind and learn different viewpoints. It can be very helpful in

decision-making.

One important thing I’ve learned is not to play favorites. You must give both sides a fair hearing. You cannot go into a situation with a predetermined outcome or you will lose your credibility. You must treat everyone and their viewpoint respectfully.

A study at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research found that a little arguing now and then is actually good for you, if done for the right reasons. The results show when people experience tension with someone else – whether their boss, spouse, or child – sidestepping confrontation could be bad for their health. Avoiding conflict was associated with more symptoms of physical problems the next day than was actually engaging in an argument.

A manager’s job is to provide the experiences that will develop his or her employees’ leadership skills.

Experience is the best teacher for leadership development. Chief among them is learning to handle differing opinions.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Spring Maybe, just maybe the snow will be beginning to disappear.

We have lived through an “old fashion winter.”

Almost makes us think that we are a winner of some kind of special race.

Thinking back to earlier years, we remember some special springtime experiences. Since our world at that time was so different from today, we remember those years as simply the “way it was” and simply accepted those happenings as how it was. Today those happenings would create fear and much frustration. Some-how we think that because we are here, we shouldn’t be required to tolerate frustration and discomfort because of the weather. Ya, well, good luck with that.

Recently, we are aware of individuals that were frustrated, because they had a problem getting their fish house off of the lake. Snow weight caused the water to cover the

ice, which when frozen, fastened the fish houses to the ice. They just didn’t want to move. This same problem occurred in years past, but the problem was solved fairly quickly by having the team pull the fish houses off the ice.

The houses were either chiseled out of the ice or a hi-powered rifle being fired into the ice thereby cracking the ice enough to allow the house to be moved. The big difference today is that today’s fish houses are almost as big as the houses we all lived in. Wouldn’t it be more economical to simply drag a single wide mobile home on the ice?

Are they fishing or camping?

Remember the day when the school bus needed to travel on all sorts of unimproved roads? In spring every low spot in the road was covered with water.

The bus had been slipping and sliding on the muddy greasy roads and would come to a stop before entering the water. There were times when the bus slid off of the road and someone needed to wade out the bus door and walk to the nearest farm that had tractors that were big enough to pull the bus out.

This usually took over an hour, so the kids on the bus played games and had fun. They then would be able to share an interesting story at home.

a workplace issue. Tell your employee not to pick a “correct” course of action when opinions conflict, but to lead the group to a consensus that everyone can support.

Another challenge to prepare for is the difficult employee who produces good work but doesn’t interact well with others. Discover what motivates that employee and help him or her channel their talents into better relationships.

Reinforce the notion that differing opinions are welcome and even necessary, but need to be respectfully presented.

I read an article about how couples should fight for their relationship, not to win the argument. I think it also applies to the workforce. Every relationship, no matter how happy, suffers its share of conflict and argument. If it’s going to endure, both parties need to know how to fight fair. Follow these rules for arguments: • Address issues promptly. Don’t let resentments simmer. If something bothers you, bring it up within a reasonable amount of time (48 hours or so).

• Treat each other with respect.

Refrain from name-calling, accusations and absolutes like “You always” and “You never.” Keep your voices calm, and make an effort to really listen to the other person’s point of view. Or as South African cleric Desmond Tutu put it, “Don’t raise your voice, improve your argument.”

• Keep it private. Don’t argue in front of others. If necessary, make an

appointment to discuss the issue.

• Don’t let it drag on. Try to set a time limit for resolving the issue. Most arguments shouldn’t last more than 15 minutes.

So the next time you find yourself in an argument or debate, treat your opponents the “Wright” way. Treat them like family.

Those of us from the farm recall needing to walk across the cow-yard to get to the shed to feed the young-stock.

The mud and manure-filled slop seemed to get deeper each day. Eventually, it would get deeper than your 4-buckles.

Now what?! The soup is running into your boots, each attempted step makes the boots go deeper, allowing more soup to fill the boots. Lifting your foot is almost impossible, since the goop won’t let your foot out. Sometimes it was possible to turn around and head for higher ground, but there frequently was an even lower area to slog through before you made it to higher ground.

The most disliked happening is when you expect the left foot to be lifted from the slop and it comes out much more quickly than you expected. You suddenly discover your left elbow, your cap and your whole right side laying in the slop. Some of the wonderful fluid has splashed into your face. Now you have to figure out how to get back on your feet, without needing to shove your hands into the slop too deeply to right yourself.

Now you go to the barn and share your stupid story with Dad and he advises you to go to the house, get rid of your clothes and hear Mother explain to you how foolish you were to let this experience happen to you.

Obituaries Richard (Dick) Liffrig R i c h a r d (Dick) Liffrig, age 80, of Elmdale, MN passed away on March 13, 2019 in the loving presence of his family at his home and farm. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, March 23 at 11 AM at St. Edwards Church in Elmdale. A visitation will be held from 9:30 A.M. until the hour of the service on Saturday at the church. A lunch at church will follow mass, and then there will be a celebration of Richard’s life at Elmdale Watering Hole.

Richard was delivered by his uncle Dr. Bill Liffrig on October 20,1938 in Red Wing, Minnesota to Louis Nicolas & Mary Christine (Tri) Liffrig. He attended St. Mary’s School of Bellechester, graduating from Mazeppa High School in 1956.

Richard attended St. John’s University on an ROTC scholarship, transferred to and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree as a business analyst (software programming) in 1961.

He met the love of his life, Joane Rau, at a Mazeppa vs. Pine Island basketball game.

6, 1960 in Pine Island, MN, and raised six children. The family lived in Minneapolis, Cambridge, Lakeville and North Prairie, MN prior to moving in August of 1969 to the Elmdale area. Richard worked at International Milling for seven years and then Fingerhut Corporation, as Director of Electronic Data Processing, retiring in 1996 after 28 years. Then he became devoted to his second career, farming. He also volunteered with the Upsala Lions and Upsala Telephone Cooperative Board.

His hobbies included farming (Angus beef cattle), playing cards (Euchre), technology, genealogy and Sudoku. He loved spending time with his family and his Tuesday night happy hours with his friends. He will be remembered for his quick wit and ready laughter.

He is survived by his children Ron (Mary) Liffrig of Prior Lake, MN, Rhonda (Joe) Pratt of Rice, MN, Reed Liffrig of Mazeppa, MN, Lori Liffrig of Springfield, VA, and Nicole (Sipho) Molife of Alexandria, VA; eight grandchildren Jenna (AJ) Kuehn, Andy Liffrig, Kyle Pratt, Eric Liffrig, Sami (Joe) Czech, Ali Liffrig, Bryn Liffrig, and Louis Molife; two great-granddaughters, Avery and Atley Kuehn; sisters Irene (Jerry) McGuire and Janice (Gary) Sanders; and siblings-inlaw Edward Meyer, Jack (Ardeth) Meyer, Evelyn Stiller, Judy Rau, Jean Oelkers, Jerry (Diane) Rau, and Tom Rau. Richard is preceded in death by his loving wife, Joane; his son, Randall; his parents; his parents-in-law, Herbert and Amelia Rau; his brother-in-law and groomsman Gary Oelkers, his siblingsin-laws Carol Meyer, Arle Rau, Mary Schneider, and Marlene Rau; his cousin and best man Floyd Nardinger; his nephew Bradley Rau, and his niece Tiffany Rau.

The Mass of Christian burial, celebrating the life of Florence M. Voss, age 86 of Holdingford will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 23 at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary Church in Holdingford.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Florence passed away peacefully at home on March 6, after a battle with cancer. There will be a visitation from 4-7:00 PM, Friday, March 22 and again after 10:00 AM Saturday at the church in Holdingford. A Rosary service will be at 6:45pm.

Florence Marie Bieniek was born November 4, 1932 to John J and Victoria (Kociemba) Bieniek. She married Arnold F. Voss, on April 4,1951,they were one month shy of being together for 68 years. Florence was a wife, mother, scholar, teacher, quilter, seamstress and florist. She was a devout Catholic, a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Mary, where she sang in the choir, decorated the alter, washed its linens since 1964 and supervised many different groups within the church. She was a sacristan, a member of the Christian Mothers and a Eucharistic Minister. Florence made a

Arlene Alma Dobis was born on February 20, 1945 to Joseph and Anna (Nieland) Schleppenbach in Albany. Arlene attended school in Albany and made her home there until moving to Holdingford.

She worked with Helping Hands providing care assistance. She is a member of Church of All Saints – St. Hedwig in Holdingford.

business out of making wedding cakes for over 60 years. The ‘Cake Lady’ was renowned for the beauty and extravagant decoration of her cakes and her frosting.

Creativity and perfection were a must in everything she did in life. On her downtime, Florence loved to play cards, celebrate, and joke with her siblings. Lastly, she was a grandmother to 14 and a great grandmother to 17, showering them with love, hugs and of course, cake.

Florence is survived by her beloved husband Arnold F. Voss, Holdingford; her Children Yvonne (Dan) Puchalla, Andover; Myron (Alverna Johannas),Voss, West Haven UT; John (Pam Ebnet), Voss, Holdingford; Arnold Jr “Butch” ( Carol M Jacobson) Voss, Avon and Carol (Franke Werner) Voss, Minneapolis; 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

She is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, George Bieniek, Holdingford, Tom & Delores (Ebnet) Bieniek, Vadnais Heights and John Jr. (Phyllis Ann Husted) Bieniek, Holdingford.

John Christopher Ebnet Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday, March 22, 2019 at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary’s in Holdingford for John Christopher Ebnet of Holdingford who passed away Saturday, March 16 at the St. Cloud VA Health Care System. There will be a visitation on Thursday, March 21 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Church of All Saints, St. Mary’s and again on Friday, March 22 from 9:30 AM until the time of the service at the church. Parish Prayers will be at 4:00 PM on Thursday at the Church.

John was born December 21, 1926 in Holding Township, Minnesota to Frank Ebnet and Elizabeth (Vos) Ebnet. He grew up on the family farm, the second youngest of 13 children.

He attended Holdingford High School and served in the United States Army in the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. Prior to departing for Korea he married the love of his life, Helen Iris Miller on March 28, 1951 and enjoyed 56 years of married life until her passing in September 2007.

John and Helen owned Holdingford Our Own Hardware from 1957 to 1997

and provided quality hardware, plumbing, propane, appliances and customer service to people throughout Stearns County.

John enjoyed playing baseball for the Holdingford Town Team for many years including the 1953 team that participated in the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Tournament. He took special pride in being a member of the 1947 Ebnet nine brother baseball team. He enjoyed numerous rounds of golf with his friends at the Albany Golf Club.

John served as Mayor of Holdingford from 1971-76 and was an active member of many organizations including the Holdingford Volunteer Fire Department, American Legion, St. Joseph’s Society, Knights of Columbus, Commercial Club, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by sons, Paul and his wife Jean Januschka Ebnet of St. Cloud, Anthony and his wife Melissa Ebnet of Albany; grandchildren, Peter (Leili Fatehi) of Minneapolis, Angela McGee (Scott) of Big Lake, Kathryn of Plymouth, Nathan (Stephanie) of Minneapolis and Simon of St. Paul; 4 great-grandchildren, Faye, Josie, Evelyn and Elizabeth; his sister Clara Donnelly of St. Cloud and his sister-in-law Jane Miller of Bedford, Virginia.

He was greeted in heaven by Helen, their three daughters; Mary, Jacinta and Kelly, his parents, along with his brothers and sisters, Alfred, George, Nicholas, Leo, Ambrose, Roman, Joe, infant Raymond, Elmer, Mary Zeis and Anna Domenico.

House approves bill making disaster recovery loans available to farmers The Minnesota House approved legislation last week making disaster recovery loans available to farmers whose barns have recently collapsed under the weight of heavy snow, sleet, or ice.

Dozens of farm buildings have caved in recent days, primarily impacting southeastern Minnesota and also occurring in other parts of the state. The legislation (S.F. 2225) authorizes the Minnesota Rural Finance Authority to issue Disaster Recovery Loans to farmers whose properties sustained damage retroactively to Jan. 1, 2019.

“This string of collapsed buildings is causing significant hardships around the state, including right here in District 12B,” said Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, who co-authored the House version of the bill. “This issue needed to be addressed immediately because these farmers who have been impacted don’t have the luxury of waiting around to see what happens with an insurance claim.

Farmers can use Disaster Recovery Loans for several purposes: To clean up, repair, or replace farm structures and septic and water systems, as well as replace seed, other crop inputs, feed, and livestock; To purchase watering systems, irrigation systems, and other drought mitigation systems and practices when drought is the cause of the purchase; To restore farmland; or To replace flocks, make building improvements, or cover the loss of revenue when the replacement, improvements, or loss of revenue is due to the confirmed presence of the highly pathogenic avian influenza in a commercial poultry or game flock located in Minnesota.

With the Senate having previously approved the bill, it now is in the hands of Gov. Tim Walz for enactment.

Spring thaw created a bit of a water fall on the Pelican Lakes North East inlet on Friday, March 15. As a result of a snow bank running across the inlet near County Road 154 and Pelican Lake Road and the warmer temperatures has created a small dam and a water fall about 18 inches high. It is kind of neat. Toward the lake, the ditch is still full of snow and the water is gradually making its way through it. In the mean time the water is backing up behind the snow dam and the other side of County Road 154. The six foot diameter culvert under County Road 154 has water almost to the top. Not likely to see this happen again anytime soon! Hope this is a sign that spring is very near.

Legislation addressing ‘crisis’ in civics knowledge State Sen. Carla Nelson, R-Rochester, and Rep. Dean Urdahl, R-Acton Township, are chief authors of bipartisan legislation addressing a growing “crisis” of civics knowledge in Minnesota.

The bill (S.F. 294/ H.F. 249) requires juniors or seniors to take a for-credit civics class as part of the 3.5 social studies credits required in Minnesota high schools. The Minnesota Department of Education will begin collecting data from an already required 50-question civics test that Minnesota students take between grades seven and 12. While passage of the exam is not a graduation standard, the test data will help assess civics knowledge in our state.

“Knowledge of our state and federal governments has eroded to crisis levels as other subject areas have received increased emphasis in our schools,” Urdahl said. “The unintended consequences are damaging to our society, with a significant percentage of our population failing to have even a basic understanding of our how our government functions. This bill would restore civics as an important component in our educational system and the data we collect would be instrumental in analyzing the situation.”

A report from the National Assessment of Educational Progress shows less than 30 percent of students were proficient in civics, and a significant gap persists among racial and ethnic groups.

Burglary: March 14: At approximately 7:02 a.m., their was a report of a business burglary at the Sobieski Co-op Creamery, located on Cable Road in the city of Sobieski.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, sometime overnight the rear door of the business was pried open and the suspect(s) made entry inside the building. A safe was broken into and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.

How to Stop Fighting About Money In Your Marriage

By Rachel Cruze N o b o d y wakes up on their wedding day and thinks, I bet we’ll be divorced by this time next year. At least, I hope not!

Most of us have the highest hopes and dreams for our marriages. Sometimes, though, after a few years, reality sets in—in the form of debt, credit cards and financial infidelity—and we give up hope. That’s why money problems are a leading cause of divorce in America, and it’s why I’m so passionate about helping people take control of their money.

When I speak at events or talk to couples across the country, I hear time and time again that money is at the root of so much marital stress. It’s amazing how appearance, status and stuff can take over our lives and ruin our relationships if we aren’t careful. The good news is that there is an antidote. It all comes down to common sense.

Whether you’re just dating or are already an “old married couple,” here are a few tips to make money a blessing in your relationship—not a cause of stress and fights.

Work together, not separate How can you be on the same page about money if you have two separate bank accounts? Didn’t the pastor at your wedding ceremony say, “You will become one?” Keeping your accounts separate is one of the most effective ways to completely wreck your financial life— and maybe even your marriage. If you want to win with money in your marriage, you must be on the same team.

Make a routine At the end of every month, sit down with your spouse for your monthly budget meeting. Plan out how you will spend every dollar for the coming month—groceries, gas, bills, everything. And don’t forget to budget a small percentage of “fun” money!

Stay involved It’s okay if one of you is in charge of budgeting and paying bills, but you both need to communicate and know what’s going on. My husband and I use the budgeting app EveryDollar, because it’s easy to use and gives us both visibility into what’s going on with our money.

Be willing to say “no” If it’s not in the budget, then it’s

not in the budget. That might mean you can’t have the latest iPhone or designer shoes. Remember, it’s only no for now.

Once you’re debt-free, you’ll have more freedom to afford the things you really want. My dad, Dave Ramsey, taught me to “Live like no one else, so later, you can live like no one else.”

Don’t compare your marriage to anyone else’s You may think other couples have it all together based on what you see on social media, but their marriage may very well be stressed. Maybe they have no margin with their money, because their paycheck comes in and goes right back out in payments. Their “perfect life” may be just one money fight away from divorce. Stay focused on your marriage and your goals!

If you and your spouse are struggling right now, change won’t come overnight. But you’ve got to start somewhere. Getting started is the hardest part, but once you start those conversations with your spouse, it will change your marriage. So, sit down for a heart-to-heart with your spouse, be honest, and be proactive. Don’t let your marriage fall apart because you’re not paying attention to money issues!

Perhaps we can understand what the psalmist was talking about when we think of those who sing, “I Love to Tell the Story” but never witness to anyone.

Or, someone who sings, “Have Thine Own Way Lord” with everyone but me.

Or, “Take My Life and Let It Be” - yes, let it be right where it is - please don’t bother me. I’m too busy.

Unfortunately, the church has far too many members who say one thing with their mouths and another thing with their lives.

We need to “transplant” our hearts with His heart.

Dear Motor Medics, I’m thinking about purchasing a “green” vehicle, either a Hybrid or totally electric design but I don’t know where to begin. I’ll be using this as a second car but hope to use it as much as possible and I will likely purchase one that is new or less than a year old. Can you help me understand some of the differences between the two and give me ideas on what to consider?

-Gary in Lincoln, Nebraska Dear Gary, The first thing to consider when purchasing either one is how it will be used. As a second car you have the luxury of using your other car for long trips. With the Hybrid this would not be a problem but with a fully electric car this would be a show stopper.

Hybrid vehicles all have an internal combustion engine combined with an electric motor that share the load in part to save fuel while Electric vehicles must be recharged when exhausted.

If the Hybrid runs low on electricity it can rely on the engine, which if low on fuel can easily be refilled at the gas station. If you run out of juice on the Electric vehicle it means a tow. Before purchasing either model we suggest you spend considerable time researching both options. There are many people who swear by their “green” vehicles and would never go back to a conventional car, others swear at them. Research is crucial.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My Dodge Caravan is five years old and I just don’t seem to be able to see the road like I used to. The lenses are still clear and I’ve had them adjusted

but I don’t see well at all. We also have a Cadillac that has those tiny round headlights and I can see great while driving it. Is there anything I can do to my van to get the same light out of it that the car has? I see cars with those really bright lights that blind me when I drive. Can those be legal? I don’t want to blind people I just want to see well.

-Glenna in Illinois Dear Glenna, There is a major difference in lighting systems between your two vehicles. The van uses headlight technology that has been used since the Model T; it has been refined a bit with better reflectors and bulbs but still has limits. The Cadillac uses H.I.D lamps.

High intensity discharge comprised of special ballasts and bulbs, and a focusing projector lens to send the high-power light to the road immediately in front of you and not into oncoming vehicles eyes. You can upgrade to a better conventional bulb in the van but legally you can’t use H.I.D bulbs without the projector type lens because it will blind other drivers. After-market projector lenses are available for some vehicles but not the van as far as we know.

Burnhamville Township February 26, 2019 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held February 26, 2019 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of January 29, 2019 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letter about spring short course training.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5703 through 5715: Rev. $1,853.33; R & B $11,287.95; Fire $11.22. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Sup. Berscheit gave an update on the Long Prairie Fire Department township meeting.

The levy will be up slightly and no major purchases are planned.

The road contractor has had problems with the hard snow and large drifts from the blizzard winds. The board will work on clearing trees in ditch along 331st Ave to help for next winter.

With the annual meeting, the board will set up booths for township election on March 12 at 4 pm. Polls will be open from 5-8 pm and meeting will be at 8:20 pm. The supervisors

approved the postcards the clerk will send out.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $88,804.58. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

The board viewed and marked boundary line changed

by Swanville as requested for the Census map.

The supervisors then proceeded to audit the books of the clerk and treasurer.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Mend Your Ways Is the United States of America a Christian nation? Is Grey Eagle a God fearing community? Was Judah of Jeremiah’s time the chosen people of God? When does the time come when a group who has traditionally been considered to be favored by God start to fall under his curse? When does what we do as a society move us from being blessed by God to being cursed by him?

Throughout the Bible God maintains a tension between declaring all those who hear his Word His chosen people and condemning those who think they are chosen but refuse to repent of their sinful ways. Being chosen

by God is about a life of repentance.

God creates a people that is repentant.

When Jeremiah declares God’s intention of destroying Jerusalem through the Babylonians he does so in the hope that they will repent, that they will mend their ways and their deeds. Internal and external change is what God is after.

You see, God sees our hearts. He sees what is motivating us from the inside. If we only follow Jesus to make our lives easier or because of the promise of earthly blessing -- he sees that. If we do good deeds for our own selfish gain God condemns that action because he sees our heart. If we go to church for the wrong reasons, we pray for the wrong reasons, we do good deeds for the wrong reasons, God sees that.

In my opinion the worst kind of disease or illness to suffer from is one that leaves your outside appearance looking healthy. When there is something deep inside us that needs mending and it has affected the very core of our being yet has left our external appearance unchanged it is far too easy to ignore our need for healing. And this is a plague affecting our society.

ple’s hearts in their communities. Likewise I am concerned for the people of our time, our society, and our churches.

There are so many hearts that are driven by selfish motivations. Our society still does a lot of good and righteous things but my biggest worry is that the hearts of those in our society are far from their Creator and Lord, far from repentance and faith. Lent is a time of repentance.

True repentance happens when we hear God’s word and our hearts are softened and we repent of our sin and are given the faith we need to believe God’s forgiveness.

Alongside the corruption I see hearts and minds set on the things of God rather than the things of man. I see people gathering under the wing of Jesus and that is good, yet there is a need somewhere for us to mend our ways.

Christians have so much to share with the world: the Gospel, the forgiveness of sins, that place God has reserved for every one of his children under the wing of Jesus where the mending leads.

Those who receive God’s forgiveness are truly blessed.

Forgiveness and peace with God is what Christians have to offer, it is what God gives us when we work to mend our ways through faith in Jesus.

It is what one receives when you attend church to hear God’s Word and to receive the Lord’s Supper.

-Tom Dear Tom, The main reason is that debt consolidation makes you feel like you did something to really change your financial world when you didn’t. That’s part of the catch. In cases like this, the biggest issue remains because you didn’t do anything to address the real problems—you and your behavior. When you have debt, the number of payments you have left isn’t the problem. The problem isn’t interest rates, either. The problem is the person you look at in the mirror every day.

Until you get mad enough about your financial situation and the real reasons for it—until you fix you and your behavior—you’ll never make any progress toward winning with money!

least $1 million. At that point, you’ve got enough assets that you won’t get rocked by the ridiculous depreciation that comes with buying a new vehicle.

Now, you don’t have to drive a beater until you pay off your house or anything like that. I advise people to drive the minimum they can in terms of a car until they complete my first three steps. Baby Step 1 is a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. Baby Step 2 is paying off all debt except for your home. Baby Step 3 is fully funding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses.

After you’ve accomplished these first three steps, then you can move up to a nicer car. Notice that I didn’t say move up to a new car. I want you to save up cash, and get a really nice used car.

That’s what the typical millionaire does, and I want you to model your financial behavior after people who are in the position you want to be in some day!

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Legislature aids farmers as weather wreaks havoc on Midwest We did the right thing last week when both the House and Senate took quick action to pass a measure that will assist farmers in recovering from near-record amounts of snow that have fallen all across the

state.

It was several weeks ago that heavy snow and high winds pummeled southern Minnesota, and that storm was followed by more of the white stuff hitting our part of the state. To add insult to injury, heavy rains also fell over widespread areas which made the snow perched atop buildings even heavier. As of late last week, nearly 50 agricultural buildings had suffered roof collapse, with most of those being dairy structures. One occurred just west of Sauk Centre when portions of a barn went down. Luckily, only three cows were lost, with the rest hauled to other dairy facilities where they could be milked.

Last Thursday, the Legislature deviated from the normal rules of business to address the situation quickly.

When the measure came to the House chamber from the Senate, the body voted to suspend the rules and allow the bill to be heard immediately and acted upon. It was a unanimous vote, 127-0,

to pass and send to the governor legislation that would allow buildings damaged by heavy snow and roof collapse to be eligible for zero-percent loans from the Rural Finance Authority.

As bad as we’ve had it, our neighbors to the south and west have been hit even harder. In Iowa, 21 counties have received disaster declarations. I saw footage of ranchers in South Dakota digging with shovels, trying desperately to free cattle trapped in snow drifts. And maybe the hardest hit state is Nebraska. Whole towns have been inundated by flood waters, the result of heavy rain on top of a deep snow pack, along with tropical-force winds. A dam collapsed and caused major damage. I saw pictures of Highway 81 near Columbus, Neb., looking like a jig saw puzzle, with huge pieces of pavement tossed about. I visited with folks who were driving home last week from southern locations. One told of getting close to Omaha and having to detour anyplace they could find an open road because I-29 had been closed due to flooding. Numerous semi rigs were strewn about, he added, the result of high winds and dangerous road conditions.

Dakota when your cows can deliver at any hour of the day or night. If those newborn calves don’t get dried off and stand up to start drinking milk within a few hours, most likely they will not make it. And for a beef producer, those calves represents his only chance at a profit!

We look forward to the end of winter, with the calendar telling us that spring officially started this week on Wednesday. Let’s hope Mother Nature

relents and we can return to a more settled weather pattern. For some, though, this winter may be the last straw, the event or series of events, that causes them to “throw in the towel.” Our hearts and prayers go out to all who have endured harsh weather events this winter.

The Todd County Feedlot Program is registering farms, ranches and feedlots by geographical region to more evenly distribute registration work load.

Where?

The Northeast region of the County updated registrations in 2018; the Southeast in 2019; the Southwest in 2020; and the Northwest in 2021.

The cycle will repeat in the same pattern for 2022 to 2025 and on.

When? Registration updates are due within 30 days upon receipt of this letter.

Who? • All landowners who receive a registration in the mail will be asked to respond.

• Landowners, no longer having livestock on premise, with outbuildings and/or fences who wish to remain registered for resale or zoning purposes are required to respond to maintain registration.

• Any new or unregistered livestock

Why? • Registrations for livestock confined to lots and/ or barns at any time or season are required by Todd County Ordinance and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for water quality inventory purposes.

• Maintaining continual registration for livestock sites in Todd County provides landowners certain zoning change protections and rights pertaining to the raising of livestock.

• Livestock registration aids Emergency Response Teams in the event of a disease outbreak such as the recent 2015 Avian Flu by locating and identifying potentially impacted farm sites, number of head and species impacted, and in providing safe zones for farms and residences in the event of such catastrophe.

• Registration also helps the County obtain resources in the form of funding, economic opportunity, and other benefits to areas of the state and county defined as “Rural Farmland”.

Minnesota provides vision for electric vehicle development Minnesota has a plan to support and foster the use of electric vehicles. The Minnesota Department of Transportation, the Pollution Control Agency and the Great Plains Institute have released “Accelerating Electric Vehicle Adoption: A Vision for Minnesota,” which provides a vision and strategies for encouraging greater adoption of electric vehicles and the necessary charging equipment across the state. It also sets a goal of increasing the amount of electric vehicles in Minnesota from about 6,000 today to 200,000 in 2030.

“Electric vehicles reduce pollution, improve public health, and are more efficient than internal combustion engines” said MnDOT Commissioner Margaret Anderson Kelliher. “They are also a lot of fun to drive.”

Electric vehicles are cheaper to maintain and operate than traditional cars, according to the report. Although

electric vehicles currently cost more than similar sized vehicles, the cost will decrease as more electric vehicles enter the market and the technology becomes more prevalent.

The vision document also addresses potential benefits that will come with greater electric vehicle use, including: job creation that will support local and state economies, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improvements in air quality and public health, and support for environmental justice and social equity.

“Minnesota’s climate is changing and we must address this by reducing greenhouse gases in all parts of our economy, including our transportation sector,” says Commissioner Laura Bishop of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. “Our recent Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Report revealed that expanding electric vehicles provides
