Make your bucket list the story of your life -By Harvey Mackay You might recall the popular movie “The Bucket List,” in which two terminally ill men escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip with a wish list of todos before they die. The movie is about bluecollar mechanic Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) and billionaire hospital magnate Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) an unlikely pair who become friends as they undergo their respective treatments.

Carter begins writing a “bucket list,” of things to do before he “kicks the bucket.” After hearing he has less than a year, Carter wads it up and tosses it on the floor. Edward finds it the next morning and urges Carter to do everything on the list (plus a few others like skydiving) and offers to finance the trip.

I recently received an email from a loyal reader asking if I had a bucket list and if I might write a column on the importance of having such a list because “many seniors just live one day at a time

with no long-term plan.”

Well I don’t want to be among that group, and I hope you don’t either, no matter what your age. As I like to say, don’t count the years, make the years count. I’m not ready to hang it up yet and doubt that I ever will be. I still have too much to live for. I was about to go on a round-the-world trip with my wife in late March and April, but the trip has since been cancelled due to the Coronavirus.

One of my bucket list items was to visit as many countries as I could.

My good friend Lou Holtz told me that years ago he wrote down 107 things that he wanted to do in his life. He wanted to go to the White House, be on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson, see the Pope, win a college football national championship and coach at Notre Dame, make a hole-in-one in golf and a lot of other crazy, but achievable things. Once he accomplished all 107 things, what did he do? He wrote down another 100

items, and he’s checking off the items on that list too.

Some people might get turned off by creating a bucket list, thinking it’s a little morbid or by creating a list that is too difficult to achieve. I disagree. I believe having a bucket list keeps you motivated and goal-oriented. If nothing else, it makes you think about what you want to do in your life.

I remember a road trip with some friends years ago when we took turns describing our perfect day. The range of ideas was remarkable, and often not what we would have predicted from each other.

Our slogan from that trip became “When was the last time you did something for the first time?”

I’m a big believer in writing myself little notes to remind me of my bucketlist items. For example, when I started out working as an envelope salesman, I dreamed of owning a factory. It became Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne So Whats New If we look around us today we see many things that are accepted as commonplace were actually not accepted years ago. These things primarily involve make-up, speech and clothing.

We sometimes want to shake our heads, but that would just prove that we are old fuddy-duddys.

My Grandfather had certain ideas regarding what his daughter should look like when she changed from country school to high school. She shouldn’t shave her legs. Eye make-up was strictly forbidden. Lipstick was forbidden, so she needed to put it on and take it off on the school-bus. Pants were forbidden, girls must wear dresses and stockings that one couldn’t see through. Today we might say that it was a quite a load of “Thou Shalt Nots.” The changes today include lipstick on girls in grade school. Pants are the normal female attire, (many of them made to form-fit.) No stockings. Peek-aboo blouses, metal inserted in lips, ears, nose and any other noticeable part of the body. Prom dresses with one side open from the floor to the waste and extreme lack of cloth in the chest area. Permanent body painting!! Hmmm.

Has the appearance changed? Is it any wonder that those who grew up without make-up were ever thought attractive by the young fellows? Is it unreasonable for mature ladies to be a little bit shocked by acceptable appearance today? I hate to admit that us old guys wonder how the young fellows aren’t distracted on a fulltime basis.

There was a time not long ago, when the half-time entertainment at the Super Bowl was family oriented. It has shown a bit of change.

If we were lucky enough to own a pair of cowboy pants, we wore them to school, to an uncle’s birthday party or maybe to town if there was a special reason for going there. Today they seem to have become accepted attire for both sexes and are now acceptable wear even at church.

In our youth we were taught to wear our best clothes to church, primarily out of respect for it’s reason for being there. Our shoes needed to be shined, or at least the mud and debris removed. Our hair were combed, our faces washed and our eyes and ears inspected and cleaned by mother, sometimes accomplished by her licking her hankey and digging in your ears and eyes. This close attention was only part of the price to look your best.

It is sometimes surprising to hear a couple of kids sharing experiences or ideas. They are quite animated in their discussions (especially young ladies), and hear the words used. Guys sometimes use some unneeded verbs to express themselves, but it causes one to pause to hear that from a young lady. There was a time when a character in a movie said “damn”, creating quite a sensation. It’s difficult to find a movie today without cussing.

Things have changed and sometimes we think “what’s next”? In the old days we would know “The Shadow Knows” because he knew about the evil that lurks in the hearts of men. For those of you that don’t recognize The Shadow, it was a radio show from a few years ago.

a reality for me at age 26. Another bucket list item for me was selling the number one envelope user in the Twin Cities, General Mills. I even put a note in my hat (back when men wore hats). It took a few years, but I knocked that one off too.

When I decided to write my first book, I put a note on my desk that said “Be a New York Times bestselling author.” That happened with “Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive.”

That feeling of accomplishment led me to author seven more books, including my latest from January 2020, “You Haven’t Hit Your Peak Yet!” That title came from a note on my bathroom mirror, reminding me that I still have mountains to conquer.

Having a bucket list drastically improves your life. It gives you a sense of purpose. I know it helps my time management because it makes me focus on my goals. I become more productive and efficient.

A lot of times people are too busy plowing through their daily to-do lists and lose track of what they really want to experience. Creating a bucket list can happen at any time in your life – young or old. It’s never too late to create a list of things you want to achieve. And while

no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.

-Sam Dear Sam, There are two good reasons to go back and deal with this debt. One, even if it’s off your credit report, you may still legally owe the money. Even if the statute of limitations has run its course, things like this have a habit of popping up and causing problems at the worst possible times. About the time you decide to buy a home, this is liable to raise its head again and mess things up. So, the fact that something doesn’t appear on a credit report doesn’t mean you’re not legally liable, or that they won’t bother you about it later.

The second thing to think about is a simple matter of fact—you owe the money. Regardless of what the legal system or credit report says, you morally owe the money. I’d contact the creditor, and begins negotiations to settle the debt.

You might be able to reach an agreement where they’d accept less than the original amount owed. Regardless, get any type of settlement offer in writing. That way, you’re truly cleaning up your life and getting rid of any financial skeletons in your closet!

Coronavirus has altered the lives of nearly everyone Most of us living today have never experienced what is happening in the world right now. The reaction to Coronavirus has altered the lives of nearly everyone.

And it has occurred with amazing speed as we work to slow down and lower the incidence curve of COVID-19.

Just last week, it was business as usual at the State Capitol. We had large groups of visitors at the complex for meetings with legislators. Precautions were being taken and we were advised to limit some of our usual practices such as hand shaking. Fist bumps or elbow touches were becoming the norm. Meetings were taking place about how to implement schedules that would allow us to continue doing the people’s work, and yet promote safety for those involved.

Looking back to last week, the most dramatic announcements came at first from the world of sports. The National Basketball Association announced one of its players had tested positive, and league play was suspended. The state girls basketball tournament actually began play, with games taking place Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Then came news that the balance of the tourney was cancelled, along with the boys tournament, which was in the process of awarding its sectional titles. Around the country, no fewer than 33 state high school basketball tournaments were affected.

One by one, all professional sports leagues announced a suspension of play. Rumors were flying about the biggest event, the NCAA basketball tournament. At first, games were scheduled to be played, but with no or few fans in attendance. Then came the news that all collegiate sporting activities were cancelled, not only through the remainder of winter, but through the spring season as well. For those who enjoy sports, there are going to be lots of reruns to watch on ESPN! Gov. Tim Walz held a news conference late last week, announcing sweeping changes that went into effect immediately. “Social distancing” became the new norm as large group gatherings were to be postponed. At first, public schools would stay open, but that quick-

ly changed with the announcement Sunday that they, too, would be closed beginning this week. All public schools in the state were to be shut down by Wednesday, with provisions for childcare and meals to be included in these contingency plans. Several area food providers have stepped forward to offer noon meals for youngsters during the school shutdown. This is a wonderful plan and illustrates that we are all in this together and that the American way is to offer help to those in need.

After a short floor session on Monday, the Legislative bodies and committees will meet in floor and committee sessions on an on-call basis from March 16 through April 14. There will be no regularly scheduled meetings, but we will meet on the House and Senate floors and in committees with advance notice to members and to the public. Telework arrangements for legislative employees is being arranged where possible. Residents are encouraged to reach out to their legislators by email, telephone and mail during this period while we are operating by alternate means.

No one knows for sure how widespread this situation will become. The measures discussed above are meant to slow down and mitigate the spread of the virus. I’ve talked with some who say we are over-reacting and that the virus is like contracting a cold. But, to repeat, no one knows for sure. These measures are prudent and in the best interest of all. The number of cases confirmed in Minnesota so far is small, reaching 35 by this past Sunday.

Over 500 people were tested that day, and 14 new cases were confirmed. Those who are 70 and over, or people of any age with underlying health conditions are asked to stay home and avoid gatherings or other situations of potential exposure.

We have outstanding people working on our behalf, and our hospital and medical operations are the best in the world. Together, we will face this situation and come out stronger!

Kevin J. Preusser

Kevin J. Preusser, age 64 of Freeport, passed away unexpectedly with his family at his side on Friday, March 13, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, March 18 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Kevin Jerome Preusser was born March 4, 1956 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Jerry and Betty (Thul) Preusser. He grew up in St. Cloud and was the oldest of ten children. He was united in marriage to Linda Ojakangas on March 27, 1992.

He was employed at International Precision Machining in Waite Park for many years. Kevin was an avid Vikings fan, enjoyed fishing, going on cruises, taking Vegas trips, and having beers in the driveway with the neighbors.

Kevin was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and was a volunteer firefighter for the Freeport Fire Department for 20 plus years. He served as chief/assistant chief for 5 of the years.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Preusser of Freeport; children, Kent (Sarah) Dumonseau of Lake Nebagamon, WI, Joseph (Michelle) Preusser of Little Falls, Alex (Sara) Preusser of Fertile, and Ryan (Amy) Preusser of Albany; grandchildren, Emma, Luke, Flora, Eli, Loren, Natalie, and one due in summer; father, Jerome Preusser of St. Cloud; sisters and brothers, Carol (Mike) Gross, Richard (Brenda) Preusser, Donald (Brenda) Preusser, Thomas (Laura) Preusser, David Preusser, Michael (Stacy) Preusser, Brian (Mary) Preusser, Daniel (Julie) Preusser, and Lisa (Greg) Liesch; brother-in-law, Roger Ojakangas; and sister-in-law, Marcia (Dave) Hahn.

Kevin was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Preusser; grandparents; sisters-in-law, Nancy Ojakangas and Veda Ojakangas.

Serving as casket bearers were Richard, Donald, Thomas, David, Michael, Brian, and Daniel Preusser. Lector was Tony Preusser. Gift bearers were Sara and Amy Preusser. Eulogy was read by Donald Preusser.

Emily Darlene (Rachey) Klassen

Due to Covid-19 the federal government is mandating private family funerals Emily Klassen, 87, of Long Prairie, passed away on March 11, 2020, at the Centra Care Nursing Home in Long Prairie.

Funeral services for Emily will be held on Friday, March 20, 2020, 12:00 noon, at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie with Fr. Omar Guanchez officiating. Friends may call the day of the funeral one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Emily was born May 23, 1932, in Grey Eagle Township, Todd County, to Paul & Evelyn (Trumble) Rachey. On July 17, 1948, she married Dayton Erickson. They moved to Long Prairie in 1986 where Emily started working at American Family Insurance; she worked there until her retirement in 2002. Emily married Robert Klassen in 2002.

Emily enjoyed her trips to the casino, bowling and especially enjoyed traveling to visit family. She was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church and the Ladies Auxiliary.

Emily is preceded in death by her parents; husband Dayton, siblings: Robert Rachey, Fritz Rachey and Viola Strack.

She is survived by her husband Robert Klassen of Long Prairie, children: David (Terry) Erickson of Princeton, Becky (Gene) Janssen of Maple Grove; grandchildren: Mathew Erickson, Randy Janssen, Anna Yamana, Melissa Cook; great grandchildren: Riley Erickson, Reece Erickson, Parker Janssen and brother Loren (Diane) Rachey of Aitken.

Ruth Ann Miller

The Mass of Christian Burial for Ruth Ann Miller was held Monday, March 16 at Seven Dolors Parish in Albany. Ruth entered Heaven’s kingdom on Wednesday, March 11 surrounded

by her loved ones.

She was born on August 2, 1940 in Melrose, MN the daughter of Louis Sr. and Lonie (Bohmer) Katzner. Ruth met and fell in love with the man whom stole her heart, and on May 25, 1963 she was united in marriage to Ralph Miller. Together they raised their four children and lived a busy and fulfilling life on the farm for 44 beautiful years until Ralph’s passing in 2007. Ruth remained on the farm until entering M.O.M. in 2018. She was also employed at St. John’s Dining Service, for which she worked for 21 years until retiring in 2012.

Much of Ruth’s free time was spent on the lake fishing with Ralph, but Ruth also loved crafting, painting, wood-working and baking. Ruth’s kitchen often smelled of freshly baked goodies, particularly pecan pies, caramel rolls and danishes.

She and Ralph also crafted many of the bird houses and wooden lawn ornaments that adorned the trees and land throughout the farm. Her pride and joy, however, was her garden and flower beds. Ruth spent countless hours planting the most beautiful and vibrant colored flowers for all to see. Ruth was strong in her faith and a beautiful, gentle soul; she enjoyed the simple things and was known to rarely complain and often ended conversations with “Thank you” or “Goodbye, for now”. She touched the lives of so many, including her grandchildren, whom she adored.

Ruth is survived by her four children, Jeff Miller (Albany), Greg Miller (Albany), Tom Miller (Orlando, FL), Lori Nierenhausen (Tim, Albany); her four grandchildren, Justin, Heather, Skyler (fiancé Brittany and Daughter Mia), Alex and one great-grandson Easton. Also, her brother Linus Katzner.

Ruth is preceded in death by her husband Ralph; parents Louis Sr. and Lonie; brothers, Albin Katzner and Louis Katzner Jr.; siblingsin-law, Judy Katzner, Sal Sperl, Rosie and Leo DeMuth, Helen Miller, and Helen’s good friend, Steve Schwann.

Nicole L. “Nikki” Schloegl-Bartkowicz

Nicole L. “Nikki” SchloeglBartkowicz, age 40 of Sauk Centre, died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident on Thursday, March 12, 2020 near her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21 at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating.

Nicole Leah Schloegl was born November 26, 1979 in Melrose, Minnesota to Warren and Marcella (Theisen) Schloegl. She graduated high school in 1998. On August 1, 2015 she was united in marriage to Thomas Bartkowicz in their backyard on Sauk Lake in Sauk Centre. Nikki was currently employed at Truckers Inn in Sauk Centre and has worked there for many years. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and the Little Sauk American Legion Auxiliary Unit 417 where she helped cook and was currently the President of the Legion Auxiliary.

Nikki enjoyed 4-wheeling, camping, deer hunting, and travelling. She was very energetic and a social person. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Bartkowicz of Sauk Centre; children, Jeric Schloegl of Sauk Centre, Niles and Tyce Bartkowicz of Becker; guardian parents, Art and Bonnie Schloegl of Sauk Centre; cousins, Tammy (John Becker) Bruder of Grey Eagle, Jamie Schloegl and Jason Schloegl both of Sauk Centre; father and mother-in-law, Rudy and Jane Tretter of Upsala; brother-in-law, Joe (Jolene) Bartkowicz of Holdingford; and many aunts, uncles, other relatives, and friends.

Nikki was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Marcella Schloegl; sister, Jody Schloegl; brother, Eric Schloegl; grandparents, Leo and Pricilla Schloegl and Henry and Bertha Theisen.

Sean Edward Bernick was born on June 3, 1965 at St Mary’s Hospital in Minneapolis to Stephen and Lucy (Justin) Bernick. He graduated from Albany High School in 1984.

He worked for Jennie O for a few years before moving to Minnetonka and working at North Star Distributing for almost 15 years. He later returned to Albany and continued to work in distribution. Sean enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed building models of military vehicles, and airplanes.

Sean is survived by his mother; Lucy of Albany, brothers; Eric (Candice) of Melrose, and Alex (Naomi Jones) of Brainerd. He is also survived by his Godfather; Francis Kalusche, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father; Stephen (2007), grandparents, infant brother Stephen Jr., Godmother, Mariella, and cousin, Nancy along with many aunts and uncles.

Dorothy Mildred Bolen

D o r o t h y Mildred Bolen of Mora, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2020, at Country Manor in Sartell.

She was 89 years old.

Dorothy was born September 21, 1930, in Ogilvie, to Alfred and Ethel Brockoff. She married Jack H. Bolen on June 17, 1953. Dorothy lived in Mora from that time until February 2020, but always held a connection and love for her hometown of Ogilvie. Through her working years, Dorothy performed secretarial and office work for Tinker and Johnson car dealership, Kanabec County Welfare Office and the Farmers Home Administration, both in Mora and Cambridge. As a vibrant member of both her church and community, she held many offices and was active in church and Women’s Missions at Zion Lutheran Church; was a charter member and officer of the hospital auxiliary and enjoyed many hours over the years volunteering at the hospital. Dorothy was also a Kanabec County Senior Citizen of the Year.

Dorothy cherished her Birthday Club group of friends and their monthly get togethers over decades of time. Keeping her flower beds well-kept was a hobby of Dorothy’s each year and she could often be seen outdoors going for a walk around town. She was known for sharing conversation, love and food with others, especially her delicious brownies that were often brought to social functions. In her earlier years, she spent time traveling with family and friends, particularly repeat visits to Colorado and Florida. When she became more homebound, Dorothy was a faithful Twins baseball and Timberwolves basketball fan and was sure not to miss watching a game.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jack; sister Marilyn Ketter.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Janet (Jim) Krych of Holdingford; grandson Joshua (Lori) Krych; granddaughter Sarah (Reed) Heidelberger; great grandchildren, Lily, Jack, Cole, Jonah, Andrew, Gianna, Margaret, Lewis and Benedict; sister Deloris Lewellyn; sister-inlaw Anita (Darreld) Olson; nephews, Mike and Brian; nieces, Jill, Colleen and Polly; many dear friends, family and neighbors.

A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Mora with Rev. Anthony Cloose officiating.

Music was provided by Karen KirschnerDanielson. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery in Mora. Arrangments are by the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora.

Betty J. Hockemeyer

F u n e r a l Services were held Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie for Betty Hockemeyer who died Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at the Saint Cloud Hospital. Rev. Noah Wehrspann officiated. Burial was in Trinity Cemetery in Long Prairie.

Betty was born on June 7, 1952 in Long Prairie to Albert and Elsie (Tesch) Hockemeyer.

Betty’s life was forever altered by a car accident.

Though disabled, her positive attitude and beautiful personality allowed her to touch the lives those she encountered. Rather than focusing on the past she chose to focus on others. She loved to send people cards for every occasion. She made people feel special with her amazing ability to remember names as she genuinely expressed interest and concern. She was grateful for the care she received at the Prairie Community Services where she lived in Long Prairie.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mary Hockemeyer of Minneapolis, cousin and guardian Naomi Walrath of Long Prairie; Brian (Sandy) Hockemeyer and Karen (Scott) Tollefson as well as numerous cousins in Long Prairie and Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her parents; infant sister; brothers, Kenneth and Keith Hockemeyer.

“This is going to hurt me more than it does you,” said the father to his young son as he took him from the family room for interrupting our conversation. I’d heard that statement many times and always wondered what the parent wanted the child to understand when it was used. If it was used to redirect a child’s behavior and teach him or her an important lesson about life, why not say so. That’s what the author of Psalm 94 meant when he wrote, “If God disciplines you, consider yourself blessed” or “full of blessings!”

To discipline means “to teach.” Discipline is not punishment as we understand it - though it may involve suffering and loss, disappointment and feelings of rejection.

When God disciplines us, it is His method to

bring us back to live within His commandments and laws and the teachings of Jesus. It is about “getting our attention” when we are overcome by temptation and fall into sin. It’s about being confronted by God when He corrects us for allowing the “things or the people or the attractions of this world” to take His place. It is about worshiping those things rather than the Creator of those “things.”

One of the blessings of discipline is that it has long term benefits for the Christian. If in His mercy He brings loss or suffering to teach us a lesson today, and if we are willing to learn from the loss or suffering when it happens, we will be spared from greater losses or more suffering in the future - and bring more honor to Him.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2004 Ford F150 truck and I’ve lost the 4-wheel drive.

The front end of the truck started to grind for a while before it finally stopped completely. The transfer case does seem to be working because the front driveshaft turns when in 4-wheel drive and does not when it is in 2-wheel drive. can you guys lead me in a direction of diagnosis that might help feel more secure in what I am told at the repair shop?

-Bernard in Enid, Oklahoma Dear Bernard, We make plenty repairs to the 4 wheel drive systems on these trucks. there is a common problem that starts with a grinding then ends up with a failure. The system uses vacuum to engage and disengage a locking mechanism on the front hubs.

When in 2 wheel drive the vacuum is applied and the hubs release. The system uses a small vacuum hose to do this that is activated electrically. That hose has a common fault which causes it to be rubbed through and when it does the system only is half engaged. This is like trying to put a transmission into gear without using the clutch.

Eventually the gear grinding eats the teeth off the hubs. To repair it the hubs and the actuators need to be replaced and the vacuum line needs to be repaired and protected to prevent future issues. This is just one possible cause of trouble.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I’ve had an ongoing issue with my 2008 Chevrolet Impala. The check engine light has been coming on and I’ve had it scanned several times and I got a code which says I have a failed thermostat. So here is the problem. I replaced the thermostat myself then had my local auto parts

store who read the code clear it and now less than a week later the light is back on with the same code. I have good heat and the temp gauge reads in the normal range.

-Mark in Manhattan, Kansas Dear Mark, We have seen this and one possibility is that the thermostat has failed a second time either due to a faulty part or there is something else wrong in the system which is making it think you have a failure. One of these possibilities is a failed temp sensor on the cooling system or possibly the connector going to it. When we make this repair which we do very often, we replace the sending unit and its connector pigtail and the thermostat then clear the codes and verify operation. Some people opt to just do part of the repair but then find they need to go back and do the rest and end up spending more money. Diagnosing the system is fairly straight forward for a repair shop with a scanner, a multimeter and temp probe. Hope this helps you out.
