Use the Mackay Sales Scalpel to Sharpen Selling Techniques

By Harvey Mackay Everyone is in sales. Why? Because from the time we wake up until our heads hit the pillow at night, we are continually: communicating, negotiating, persuading, influencing and selling ideas.

Do you want to nail the sale? The tool I use is called the Mackay Sales Scalpel. It’s my sure-fire way to sharpen and pinpoint every sales situation.

As I see it, expert selling demands five essentials: • Fire – the drive to strive.

• Formulate – the art of planning.

• Fascinate – the gift of sizzle.

• Follow-up – the discipline to control.

• Finalize – opening the door to maximum opportunity.

Let’s start with Fire. You have to have fire. You have to love the fight. You have to know how to ignite it and to keep it lit.

When you love what you do, you will never have to work another day in your life. In fact, the subtitle to one of my books reads: “Do what you love. Love what you do. Deliver more than you promise.”

That’s the spirit of the salesperson’s creed.

When times are tough, it may not be your fault for being down. But it is always your fault for not getting up. You have to be a believer to be an achiever.

Only a fired-up, high-energy workplace ignites tomorrow’s ideas. The job of sales management? It’s to keep the fire roaring.

But no amount of fire will take you anywhere without a plan. People don’t plan to fail; they fail to plan. That brings us to ingredient #2 of the Mackay Sales Scalpel: Formulate. You need to formulate a plan.

Central to your plan: Figure out how you’ll demonstrate the product.

A salesperson tells, a good salesperson explains, and a great salesperson demonstrates.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 pioneer David Ogilvy said no one ever sold anyone anything by boring them to death. There’s not a lot of difference between showmanship and salesmanship.

Mostly, you have to be likable, pleasant and listen well. In our cold and unfriendly world, it can be fascinating to meet up with a genuine, honest and attentive person.

I have never known anyone to buy from someone they don’t like.

Want to fascinate people? Start by smiling and listening. Oh yes, there’s one other thing to keep in mind, but you probably know that already: The sweetest sound in the English language is the sound of your name on someone else’s lips.

That brings us to the fourth element of the Mackay Sales Scalpel: Follow-through.

Why is follow-through so important?

Selling is easy, but only if you work hard at it. You have to do the details – relentlessly.

Few things drive repeat sales more than expert customer service. No customer service, and pretty soon, no business.

In customer service, nothing counts like honoring commitments and meeting

deadlines. In sales, you have to nail the exact practices beforehand with manufacturing, IT, distribution, finance and other pertinent departments.

The key is to latch onto your customers and hold them fast. Don’t just meet their needs. Anticipate them. Don’t wait for them to tell you there’s a problem. Go out and ask them if there is a problem.

Now we come to Finalize—the fifth and final edge of the Mackay Sales Scalpel.

It’s all about closing.

The close is only the very last stage of the process. You’ll never close effectively without mastering the whole process of negotiating first. Find ways for both sides to legitimately win. At any close, the super salesperson is already thinking about the service needed to support the deal or the referrals that a satisfied customer is bound to deliver.

Mackay’s Moral: The sale begins when the customer says yes.

Rodney Ray Bleeker

Obituaries Leonard W. Birkholz

Leonard W. Birkholz, age 79, of Blaine passed away March 9, 2015.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Henry & Dorothy; and brother, Alvin. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Marlene; children, Charles (Pam) Birkholz, Carol (Carl) Jauch, Kyle (Julie) Birkholz; grandchildren, Joshua (Patricia), Kelsey,

Bridget (Joshua), Isaac, and Gabriel; brother, David (ReNee) Birkholz; and other relatives and friends.

Leonard retired from the SLP school system as an elementary teacher in 1993, then he became a vegetable farmer. He grew vegetables on his farmland by Swan Lake in Todd County.

Funeral service was held Saturday, March 14 at Spirit of Christ Lutheran Church in Ham Lake, MN. Interment took place at Lakeview Cemetery, Grey Eagle, MN on March 16.

Jerome J. Pundsack

Jerome J. Pundsack, age 90 of Melrose, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at the Belgrade Nursing Home in Belgrade, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 23 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Sunday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

St. Rosa Lions will pray at 6 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Sunday evening.

Jerome John Pundsack was born March 4, 1925 in New Munich, Minnesota to Henry and Cecelia (Wehsler) Pundsack. On February 20, 1950 he married Clara Voller at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Ward Springs. The couple farmed southeast of New Munich until 1971 when they moved to St. Rosa. They owned and operated St. Rosa General Store from 1971 to 1989.

The couple retired in 1989 and moved to Melrose. Jerome worked for the City of Melrose doing maintenance work for over 15 years. He enjoyed joking with his city

R o d n e y Ray Bleeker, age 79, of Little Falls, formerly of Swanville, MN, passed away peacefully at his home on March 12, 2015. A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville with Pastor Kevin Zellers presiding. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. A private burial will be conducted at a later date.

Rodney Ray Bleeker was born December 14, 1935 in Ackley, IA; the only child of Kenneth and Alice (Janssen) Bleeker. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1954. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1955. While stationed in the Navy, Rodney played in the Navy Band at each base he was stationed at. David C. Hedin, 62 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at the Long Prairie Nursing Home in Long Prairie, MN. Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Burial was at Bearhead Cemetery in Pillsbury, MN. David Charles Hedin was born on October 25, 1952 in Long Prairie, Minnesota to the late Edwin and RoJean (Tall) Hedin.

He graduated from Swanville High School in 1971. David was united in marriage to Kathleen Pietrowski in the month of July of 1972 in Swanville, MN, and together they had daughter, Mary Lou. He later was remarried to Sheryl Canfield on May 1979 in Swanville, MN. Together the couple made their home in Swanville, and raised four children; April, Joni, Angela, and Travis. David worked in the Turkey Industry for many years. He later worked for Long Prairie Packing for almost 20 years. David enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and trapping. He

to Minneapolis in 1965, and also lived in Florida, Oklahoma eventually back to Minnesota, settling in Swanville, MN. The couple lived in Swanville, MN until moving to Little Falls, MN in 2013.

Rodney was a member of many bowling leagues and many bands over the years including, jazz, country club bands and local club bands. He enjoyed hobbies such as, wood working, 2000 piece puzzles and watching Vikings, Gophers and Twins games. He farmed and worked at Maciej Construction until 1999. In 2013, he retired from Culdrum Township after 30 years of service as Patrol Operator and Township Supervisor. He was also a member of Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Valerie; children, Gregg (Brenda) of Pierz, MN, Vanessa (Paul) Tykwinski of Little Falls, MN; grandchildren, Adam, Ian, Taylor, Chandler and Lexie Bleeker, Nicole and Jett Schaffer; great grandchild, Aubree Schaffer and Mother-in-law, Hilda Drews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Alice (Janssen) Bleeker and father-in-law Richard Drews.

Rodney’s grandchildren will be serving as his honorary pallbearers.

Genevieve “Jenny” A. Knapp

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Genevieve “Jenny” A. Knapp, age 87, of Holdingford, was held on Monday, March 16, 2015 at the Church of All Saints – St. Hedwig in Holdingford.

Father David G r u n d m a n officiated and burial took place in the parish cemetery. Jenny passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, March 11, 2015 at Mother of Mercy Memory Lane.

Jenny was born on May 1, 1927 to Peter and Rose (Mathieu) Reiter in Cold Spring.

She grew up with two siblings before moving to St. Cloud to attend the business school.

Jenny worked as a secretary for Landwehr Transfer for a couple of years and on June 6, 1950 she married Tillman “Jim” Knapp at St. Boniface Church in Cold Spring and together they raised six children in various MN and

SD towns. Jenny was primarily a homemaker and enjoyed farming, taking care of calves, gardening, and growing flowers. She was a quiet, soft-spoken woman who enjoyed having family together for holidays. Jenny loved her children and spending time with her 14 grandchildren, watching them play and often joining in the fun. She didn’t drive but greatly enjoyed the road trips she and Jim took. In their travels, they visited 42 states and all the Canadian provinces; never having a set itinerary, always seeing what ever struck their fancy. She enjoyed playing cards and was in various card groups. Jenny was a member of St. Hedwig’s church and the Rosary Sodality.

Jenny is survived by her husband of 64 years Tillman, Albany; her children RoseMary (Greg) Philippi, St. Cloud; Jerry Knapp, St. Joe; Patty (Art) Dyer, Gold Hill, OR; Dan (Deb) Knapp, Avon; Ken (Donna) Knapp, Avon; Carol (Will) Hellmann, St. Joe; 14 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild with another on the way; and other family and friends.

She is preceded by her parents Peter and Rose, her siblings Victor (infant), Harold Reiter, Ralph (infant), and Vernette Schlangen.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My daughter is in her late twenties, and she has a good job making $50,000 a year. The other day, she told me she has $15,000 in credit card debt and has financed an expensive car she’s upside down on. Her apartment in Omaha costs $600 a month, and she is asking for help to get out of the hole. We tried to teach her how to handle money, but apparently it didn’t work. How do you think I should handle this situation?

-Cindy Dear Cindy, Here’s what I would tell her if she were my kid in that situation. First, I’m not paying for your problem to go away.

I’d tell her to sell the car and get a cheap little beater. She’ll have to get a small loan to cover the difference, but it will rid her of a car payment. And hey, a little bit of debt is better than a whole lot of debt — especially when the debt is on something that’s going down in value. After that, she can get a part-time job and work her tail off until she cleans up the mess she made.

I know all this sounds harsh, but this girl had a good thing going and she screwed it up by being impulsive and immature. Think about it; she’s making $50,000 a year, and only $7,200 of that was going toward rent. Her taxes aren’t that much, so where’s the rest of the money going? I’m guessing a big chunk is being wasted on restaurants, goofing off and other stuff she doesn’t really need.

Let her wallow in it and worry about things for while first, though. Then, if she’s willing to accept responsibility for her actions, and she starts working hard toward handling her money wisely, you might help her out once in a while. Every time she pays off $1,000, you could add $500 to the next payment. But I’d test her resolve first to see if she wants it badly enough!

work part-time even though I’m in pretty good shape financially. His plan, if we get married, is to give his house and his savings to his children, while we live in my home. We’d still have his small pension, what I bring home and my savings, but I think he should invest at least half of what he has in our marriage and relationship.

-Betty Dear Betty, So, his wealth goes to his kids and you get to feed and take care of him until he dies? In my mind, this is not a good plan.

I think what you’re discovering here is that this guy just doesn’t want to be lonely. It sounds, too, like he’s dipping into your wealth while all his stuff goes to his kids. I’d be a little frustrated with this idea if I were you. And I think the two of you need some premarital and relationship counseling before you take another step forward. Right now, you’re in third place behind his kids and his belongings.

I’m not saying he has to give everything to you, but you guys definitely need to have a serious talk and find a little balance. Right now, he’s clinging to everything in one way or another, and not really offering to take care of you. In my mind, you need to be ready to take a bullet for someone when you want to marry them. And this guy hasn’t shown that he’s ready to put you first.

Russ Jongewaard was the guest speaker at the Little Falls Kiwanis meeting held in the St. Otto’s Cafeteria. Russ shared his experience in the Navy Seabees during War World II. When Russ listed to the radio on December 7, 1941, he learned about the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Within the next few days, he found himself standing in a long line preparing to enlist in the US Navy. At age 24, Russ was assigned to the US Navy Seabees. The Seabees were the construction unit of the Navy. His first assignment was building a Sub Base in Dutch Harbor in the Alaskan Aleution Islands. He also built barracks in San Francisco and rebuilt the harbor in Guam in preparation for the attack on Japan.

Last week the Swanville 5th grade finished their chapter on mixtures and chemical changes in science. They capped off their chapter by testing the chemical reaction created when combining diet cola with Mentos candy.

It was a great way to end the chapter and really demonstrated chemical change--in this case the geyser created when you combine the potassium benzoate, aspartame, and caffeine from the cola with the gelatin and gum arabic from the candy! Donations from the Lion’s Clubs of Grey Eagle-Burtrum ($2,250.00), Long Prairie ($1,350.00), Staples Host ($1,125.00), Clarissa ($1,125.00), Browerville ($1,125.00), Motley ($1,125.00), Swanville ($1,000.00), Staples 94 ($100.00), along with donations from Minnesota National Bank ($1,000.00), RWay ($50) and assistance from the Take Heart Program of the CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center at St. Cloud Hospital ($1,125.00 equivalent) have donated a combined total of 10 Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to the Todd County Sheriff’s Office. The AEDs were presented to Chief Don Asmus at the Todd County Board of Commissioners’ meeting on March 17th, 2015.

The project goal is to raise enough for 12 AEDs as needed by the Todd County Sheriff’s Office. To date, the project has raised the equivalent of $11,375.00 of the needed $13,575.00. The project was started at the Lions 5M8 Region 3 Zone 1 Fall meeting when the Long Prairie Lions approached the zone with this potential project. With the blessing of the zone chair Keith Porter (Staples Host Lions), the project was approved. The project was expanded to include other Lions organizations that were located in and around Todd County and later, local businesses located in Todd County. When someone has a sudden cardiac arrest, you have about 10 minutes to save the person’s life. Since law enforcement personnel are often the first on the scene, local Lions Clubs residing in and around Todd County decided to donate the AEDs to the Todd County Sheriff’s Office to better serve the area. An AED is a comput-

erized medical device that can recognize a rhythm that requires an electrical shock and will advise the rescuer when a shock is needed to restore the heart’s natural rhythm. AEDs are safe and very easy to use and the American Heart Association considers them a major contributor to survival of sudden cardiac arrest.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest occurs when electrical impulses in the heart become rapid or chaotic, which causes the heart to suddenly stop beating. To prevent death, CPR (CardioPulmonary Resuscitation) must be started immediately after the person collapses and an AED used to shock the heart and restore a normal heart rhythm, if the AED senses that it is required. In fact, without such help the chance of survival drops 10% for every minute that passes.

Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack. While a heart attack may cause cardiac arrest and sudden death, the terms don’t mean the same thing. Heart attacks occur when a portion of the blood flow to the heart gets clogged and prevents oxygen to the heart muscle, not necessarily resulting in the death.

Wade is very active in the Upsala FFA Chapter, and serves as the officer at large. He was instrumental in helping to form the Upsala FFA Alumni chapter this year, which was a great effort! He also manages the chapter’s vending machine.

He serves as a wonderful mentor and role model to younger students and encourages them in any way he can. Wade’s favorite class is Robotics because “it helps me understand more about computers and their use for farming.” He names the Transitions class as one of the most valuable because it helps him work on job

Discussion Continues Regarding Proposed Buffer Strips Strong rhetoric out of the governor’s office may impede progress on a controversial 50-foot buffer requirement for Minnesota waters. Gov. Mark Dayton, in a news conference last week, said that farmers don’t have the right to create cesspools, and that they “should look into their souls” when thinking about the proposal that would require them to take land out of production and establish buffer strips, with no compensation from the state.

When word of this plan came out, one of my first thoughts was of the huge cost to the state in taking well over 100,000 acres of farm land and converting them into conservation buffer strips. When I saw the actual piece of legislation, there was no mention of compensation to landowners, other than encouraging enrollment in the federal “continuous CRP” program. It amounts to a state mandate to enroll in a voluntary federal program if one wanted some level of compensation! The only mention of state funding was an unknown amount going to local Soil and Water Conservation Districts to assist in the LATE MODEL CARS & TRUCKS

I read an article written by Howard Midje, a retired Minnesota state design engineer of what was known at the time as the Soil Conservation Service of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and is now the NRCS. He called the governor’s buffer requirement the “largest land grab in state history.” He went on to describe how buffers actually work, saying they need to be mowed or clipped several times during a season to keep the grass short and to keep trees from becoming established. He said that if grass is allowed to grow over two inches tall, it will simply bend over when water flows through it and lose its effectiveness in trapping sediment. Midje added, “The mowing (of buffer strips) and pheasant habitat are not always compatible.”

Under current regulations, the mowing of grass is not allowed on CRP land, with the exception of mid-contract maintenance. I contacted the state Farm Service Agency office to verify that, although we were told by the head of BOWSR that USDA is looking into the possibility of allowing more mowing on this type of contract. Interestingly, when one signs up for continuous CRP, officials utilize a grading system to determine how wide buffer strips should be, and they could range from a minimum of 30 feet to over 100. That seems to make more sense, as the one-size-fits-all plan proposed by Gov. Dayton could be too narrow in some areas and too wide in others.

This mandatory buffer bill has already passed one Senate committee.

Before the state takes an estimated 125,000 acres out of production by requiring buffer strips and turns the enforcement of this mandate over to the DNR, we need to slow down and work together. It doesn’t work well if one side feels their concerns are not being heard and that sound science is not being utilized.

We all want clean water, and most farmers are doing their part to improve water quality. Instead of this cookiecutter approach, we should be targeting high-impact areas where buffers will do the most good, and we should be doing it in a way that fairly compensates farmers for their loss of productive land.

Each church has its own “temperament.” There are those where you find happiness and hope, a warm fellowship and a welcoming spirit. Others are cold and closed, old and tired. In between are some that are looking for an identity and try one thing and then another.

Psalm 33 is filled with enthusiasm for God. And it has some great advice on how to worship God. “Sing joyfully,” said the Psalmist. “Praise the Lord with the harp and the ten-stringed lyre,” he continues. But why?

One reason is that “The Word of the Lord is right and true.” No one has ever rejected the Bible because it contradicts itself but because it contradicts the reader. “The only objection against the Bible,” said Wilmot the infidel when he was dying, “is a bad life.”

“The plans of the Lord stand true,” is another reason. A father said to his son, “Go to the third step and jump. I’ll catch you!” But he didn’t and his son fell to the floor. “Now get up and remember,” he said, “don’t trust anyone - not even your father.” Our Heavenly Father never tricks us nor tempts us. He is faithful in all things and at all times.

Finally, “The eyes of the Lord are upon those who fear Him. No army has ever saved a king,” said David. Warriors work together and combine their strength but are often defeated. But “God delivers His own from death and keeps them alive in famine.”

Humanists depend on human beings. Christians depend on Jesus Christ to “deliver” and “nourish” them.

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month Letter to the Editor

Avery Jackson has been chosen as the February Swanville Student of the Month for grades 7-9. Avery is in eighth grade. She is the daughter of Todd and Stacy Jackson.

Avery participates in Volleyball, Basketball and Softball and has done so since entering the Junior High School. As a student Avery has been on the honor roll every quarter since seventh grade.

“Avery Jackson is an outstanding choice for Student of the Month. Avery is a true student-athlete, someone who excels in the classroom and on the court,” states Aaron Gapinski, Head Girl’s Basketball Coach and elementary teacher. He continues by adding, “As a coach, it is

wonderful when you don’t have to worry about the player academically because they make their schoolwork a priority.

Avery works hard in everything she does, wanting to get better. She has a great personality and, even though she is only an 8th grader, has shown tremendous leadership skills among the girls on our basketball team. Congratulations Avery, well deserved!”

Outside of school Avery is active in her church youth group and youth rallies.

She enjoys playing sports and hanging out with her friends.

Chantelle Frie, English teacher adds, “Avery is usually the first student I see in the morning. Avery is kind, helpful, and fun. She comes to class prepared to work, follows directions, and discuss. She is great at staying on task and motivating others. Avery stands out as a student who always tries to do her best.”

Avery plans on attending college.

She would like other students to know “Be yourself because you’re just as important as anyone else.”

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month Junior Garett Karnes has been chosen as the February Swanville Student of the Month for grades 10-12. He is the son of Jerry and Patricia Karnes.

“I am continually impressed

by Garett’s positive attitude. He is always smiling” states Chantelle Frie, English instructor. She adds, “When Garett sets his mind to something, he doesn’t let anything stand in the way of accomplishment.

Garett already has a mature approach to life’s problems and has a well-rounded interest base. He has the ability to see issues from more than one side and discuss them openly. Garett has a great sense of what it takes to succeed in life, and I’m excited to see how he uses his talents in the future.”

Garett has many interests including hunting and fishing. He loves all sports but especially enjoys football, golf and track. At home he enjoys cooking and spending time with family and friends.

Tom Bzdok, Social Studies instructor states, “Garett is very deserving of this recognition. He is a pleasure to have in class as well as to be around. He always seems to be in a cheerful mood and never fails to greet you in a friendly manner. His

positive, energetic personality is passed on to those around him putting everyone in a better mood. He is a mature and respectful individual who will certainly be successful in life. Congratulations Garett!”

Garett keeps busy while in school by participating in athletic endeavors of track and field since ninth grade, and varsity football as a sophomore and junior. He also participated in theatre as a sophomore and plays in both concert and pep band, participating since his freshman year. He is consistently on the honor roll and has won the Presidential Award for Fitness and the Citizenship Award. He has attended the Leadership Conference as a representative of Swanville High School. He was recently chosen to represent Swanville at Boy’s State. His future plans are to attend college for Economics and Political Science.

Garett also volunteers his time and talents by working at both the Swanville Carnival and also at the Ellsworth Wisconsin County Fair. He is always willing to lend a helping hand at church activities, as well as assisting neighbors.

“Always try your hardest in everything you do, and as you achieve your goals in life never forget where you started from,” is his advice to fellow students.

He adds it is important “to dream fearlessly.”

By Patricia Seifert, A fed up tax payer Governor Dayton wants to take the State’s Projected budget surplus for New spending projects. At the same time, he proposed a new gas tax scheme to pay for “roads and bridges.” He wants to raise the gas tax by 6.5% per gallon of gas. This means that a price of $2.349 per gallon of gas raises $.15 for the State; but if the price goes up to $3.999 per gallon the State gets $.26.

I thought he promised, during his first campaign for Governor, to only raise taxes on the rich, or top 2%! This gas tax is not levied only at pumps frequented by the upper 2%, wherever those pumps are, but on all of us.

Further, what happened to all the

money from the $.085 per gallon tax passed in 2008 or the new vehicle taxes?

I thought they were both to be for roads and bridges. Or was it “sold” to us, the voters, as being for roads and bridges but was actually for transportation and used for light rail?

We, the taxpayers of MN, need to ask Governor Dayton these questions.

He needs to give us real, definitive answers.

If this tax scheme is so good and necessary, why was it not good or necessary enough in 2013 or 2014? Why did the trouble with our roads and bridges suddenly become a top priority in 2015 and not previously? This couldn’t possibly be political gamesmanship, could it?

Upsala Junior High Student of the Month Alex Roerick has been named the Upsala Junior High School Student of the Month for February. Alex is the son of Gerald and Julie Roerick.

He participates in football and basketball, and is a member of the UHS student council. He is also the Vice President of the 7th Grade Class. Alex has earned “B” Honor Roll academic honors for the first two quarters of the school year. Outside of school, he stays busy by helping out on the family farm.

Alex’s favorite class is English because the students get to talk a lot about

their families and what they do. He feels that his Agriculture Education class is the most valuable because when they are working in the Greenhouse, the students have to learn how to work together.

Ms. Roxann Lewis, Alex’s US Studies instructor states, “It is a joy to have Alex in my US Studies class. He comes every day with a smile on his face and an eagerness to learn. His enthusiasm is very evident by the questions he asks and his willingness to answer questions and participate in every lesson. He is very helpful with classroom tasks and is always willing to help another student. I look forward to working with Alex in future social studies classes.”

In addition to his school activities, Alex enjoys hunting, fishing and playing sports as hobbies. Alex plans to go to college some day and is still undecided about what interests he might pursue.

Mark your calendars now for the performances of “Journey With Jesus to Calvary,” an unique play presented Palm Sunday weekend at St. Francis of Assisi Parish (located between Albany and Upsala on Hwy. 238). Meet companions that encountered Jesus on the road to Calvary.

Be prepared to put more meaning into Holy Week by attending. 60+ parishioners are involved in the production which recaps events from Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem through His suffering, death and resurrection. The story doesn’t

change...we have all read about it. However, seeing it brought to life brings more meaning to the events that occurred.

Performances are Wednesday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. and Palm Sunday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m. The cost is free - Jesus already paid the price. Free will offering to benefit the religious education program.

Grey Eagle Township March 2, 2015 These minutes are not approved.

Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were any additions to the agenda. Township residents asked to have Ascot Rd. placed on the agenda. Mike made the motion to accept the agenda with that addition. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the February 2, 2015 minutes to the board.

Ray made the motion to approve the minutes as written. Mike made the second, all in favor. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for February. Claims list included 6 claims for a total of $3,450.99. Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried unanimously. Letters received included advertising, a request for a donation, and the short course information.

Dennis Bacon was present to review the audit with the Board members. He stated the books were in good order and ready for the annual meeting.

Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of February 1, 2015: $156,450.54; Checks cleared: 12, $4,658.77; Deposits including interest: $417.62; Balance as of February 28, 2015: $152,209.39;

Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $152,209.39; CD Balance: $122,821.90 Ray made the motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Second by Mike. All in favor, Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: A question was asked by a township resident as to the possibility of tar for Ascot Road. The part they were concerned about was from Morrison Line Road to Mary’s Lake. A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably combed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.

After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.

“I love it,” he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

“Mr. Jones, you haven’t seen the room; just wait.”

“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” he replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged. It’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away.. Just for this time in my life...”

There are a few reasons why I think that number is so important. First, to even begin calculating your retirement number, you have to decide what kind of life you want to live in retirement. Coaches’ Comments: “The Bulldog Boys’ Basketball Team is proud to announce Carter Loven for the Athlete of the Month for February. Carter is a junior for the Bulldogs, who finished the season with a 15-10 record. In the month of February, Carter compiled 69 points on 41% shooting, gathered 49 rebounds, 22 assists, and 11 steals. Carter always gives 100%, whether it is during a game, practice, or the off season. The classroom has also become a focal point for Carter, where he has made great strides to get himself on the honor roll this quarter. Danica is very deserving of this award because of all the things that she does on the court for our team.

She has been our leader in assists on offense and steals on defense this season to show her athleticism on both sides of the court. She is also our second leading rebounder and near the top in scoring for our team as well. Danica has really stepped into a leadership role on the team as well. I often see her taking and working with the other players on the team, helping them better understand the situations that we are in. Because of her leadership, our team really started to gel and play better the 2nd half of the season. We will miss Danica’s contributions on and off the court as her career winds down.
