Old habits die hard -By Harvey Mackay A guy walked into a sandwich shop and the server asked what he would like to order.

He said, “What do you have that is good?”

The clerk responded that everything is good.

The customer then asked, “Do you sell things other than sandwiches?”

The clerk said, “Yes, we have salads, too.”

The customer added, “Great, I am so tired of sandwiches! That is all I ever eat!”

The clerk said, “What would you like?”

And the customer said, “I guess I’ll take a regular size roast beef sandwich.”

My friend John Maxwell got me thinking when he said: “You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily.

The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.”

Most of your everyday routines are probably comfortable, and you’re probably doing okay with them. But imagine the dreams you could realize by mixing things up to achieve what you really want.

Another friend, Dean Graziosi, wrote a book called “Millionaire Success Habits,” in which the premise is that you can make “barely-noticeable, small shifts in your daily routines by nudging out those things that don’t serve you and replacing them with habits that create a path to wealth and abundance.”

out of life. Too often, we can define what we don’t want, but can’t really figure out where we want to go. Once you do that, your path becomes clear as to what you need to work on.

When I think back on my career, I often changed my daily routine in order to realize what was important to me. When I was building my envelope-manufacturing business, I focused on selling the major accounts in Minnesota. When I wrote my first book – “Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive,” I wanted to sell books and build my writing and speaking career.

And with each new dream, I had to adapt.

I’ve always strived to be as productive as possible. I became a time management freak.

I was among the first to install a car phone.

I took a speedreading course. I found that if I begin each day with a plan and prioritize what I need to accomplish, I procrastinate less.

I realized that by doing two things that I don’t want to do every morning, I can move on to more profitable things.

I continue to work at being organized because that’s always been a challenge.

Wasting a minute here and there adds up to a lot of lost time trying to find things.

Fortunately, I have a good staff that keeps me organized.

Another factor I’ve worked on is sleep.

I always thought I wanted this message displayed on my tombstone – “He couldn’t sleep fast enough!” I was afraid of missing something. But over the years, I’ve relented and slept more. It has helped my energy and focus.

Leading up to the recent Super Bowl, I saw an article about Super Bowl winning quarterback Tom Brady and how he credits his high performance, even at age 43, to

getting quality sleep and lots of it. Brady, like many superb athletes, gets 8-10 hours of sleep at night and often takes daytime naps.

Most nights Brady turns in by 9 p.m. and tries to stay in bed for 10 hours. He takes it so seriously that he even developed his own brand of pajamas!

Getting up and stretching for 15-20 minutes also helps me. I exercise for 60-75 minutes every single day, which also gives me energy and keeps me in shape. Eating healthy, starting with a good breakfast, is also helpful.

I eliminate disruptions as much as possible and return calls at the end of the day. I also reward myself when I accomplish a task.

These are all good habits that replace bad habits. That’s not always easy. Some studies suggest that it takes about 21 days to create a new habit or break a bad habit.

However, according to a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, it can take 18-254 days to form a new habit.

The study also concluded that, on average, it takes 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic. Breaking a habit also tends to involve a more consistent, conscious effort.

So start today – ditch your bad habits and focus on building better ones.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Some Minnesota History

in the area around the church and so they simply called it St Paul. About 10 years later a territorial meeting place was established in a log hotel. In 1853, the first capitol was built. It wasn’t really impressive by today’s standards, but for the next 30 years it was where dictates originated.

In 1881 a fire burned all of St. Paul, including the capitol. Two years later construction began on a new capitol building. Ten years later, it was decided that there was a need for a better capitol building and a new one was constructed on the current capitol site. Which brings us to our current capitol. It looks similar to the original appearance, however in the last 120 years there were many “additions and corrections.”

So what happened to the 2nd capitol building? It was rented for various office and retail needs for about 25 years and in 1937 the WPA was contracted to destroy the building. After the mess was cleaned up, the site became a state owned parking lot, which it is today.

I was unable to find out how many families lost their homes and how many citizens died because of the fire in St. Paul. I found that unusual, since history records that Sauk Rapids was flattened by a tornado in 1886, causing 79 people to lose their lives. That was only 5 years after the St. Paul fire. Maybe there was more demographic information developed in that 5 year period. Hmm Our current state capitol is impressive and is well worth the stop to look it over.

We usually don’t think back to the time when Minnesota didn’t have a State Capitol. Prior to 1850, there were so few Minnesota residents, there apparently wasn’t a need for a big overseeing government to control them. It seems that the residents of our area were too busy trying to build homes, businesses and farms, which left little time to be political. Most immigrants settled in areas occupied by immigrants from their previous European countries and things were managed like they had been in the “old country”. With the limited population, it worked quite well.

From 1850 to 1860 Minnesota’s population grew from about 6000 people in 1850 to 170,000 in 1860. That increase is over 2700 percent. Farm production during these 10 years increased a percentile that is impossible to imagine. A lot of the new arrivals were from agricultural backgrounds, so they knew how to run a farm. The greatly increasing population needed to eat and although many grew gardens for food needs, they needed meat, milk, flour and probably oats and corn to satisfy their diet. Having a supply to fill the need is a good economical situation.

With the population growth, it became apparent that there must be a centralized government, so one was created.

In 1841 a church was built on the east side of the Mississippi River and it was called The Cathedral of St. Paul. In the following years development occurred

March 17, 2021: At approximately 3:47 a.m., received a report of a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle on 70th Street, approximately three miles north of Upsala, MN in Swanville Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 30-year-old Cody Stumpf of Little Falls, MN was traveling west on 70th Street when he came upon 26-year-old Kelsie Olson of Swanville, MN walking in the middle of the roadway. Stumpf’s vehicle struck Olson and she was thrown into the ditch. Olson was transported to St. Cloud Hospital by Mayo Clinic Ambulance with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Swanville First Response Team and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

Many things have changed over the years, but not the quality of our meat.

Kurt Johnson

Kurt Lars Johnson, age 70, of Grey Eagle passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving wife Rhonda at the Saint Cloud Hospital on March 10, 2021.

Kurt was born June 18, 1950 in Chanhassen, MN to Jurgen and Clara Johnson and was a graduate of Minnatonka High School. He attended Dunwoody Institute for sheet metal and offset printing. At the age of 50 he attend the Foley Belsaw School of Sharpening. He started working as a teenager at the Excelisor Amusement Park. He then worked 35 years as an offset printer. He owned

Elaine M. Hubert

Elaine M. Hubert, age 59 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family after a battle with cancer on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 19 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rebecca Thomas officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Elaine Marie Hubert was born November 23, 1961 in Glenwood, Minnesota to James and Marie (Escher) Hubert. She was united in marriage to Bill Gillies in 1979. Elaine attended Alexandria Technical College for business management. From 1992 through 1993 she managed Sauk Centre apartments.

James Patrick Dinkel

James Patrick Dinkel 59, of Sterling, Alaska (formerly of Long Prairie) passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 7, 2021 from a nonCovid condition.

James was born April 1, 1961 to Romaine and Veronica (Raudzis) Dinkel in Browerville.

He was the seventh child of a seventh child (Romaine) and grew up on the family farm with eleven brothers and sisters outside of Long Prairie. James was very athletic and followed in the footsteps of his older brothers, excelling in sports throughout high school and attaining a scholarship in football at St. Cloud State. Later he apprenticed as a plumber where he worked for several years in the Long Prairie area. Around the turn of the century, he made his way to Alaska where he joined two siblings and lived the last two plus decades. In Alaska, he met the love of his life, Katherine, and made his home on the Kenai Peninsula where they worked and enjoyed the great northern

and operated Viking Sharpening of Grey Eagle until his death.

Kurt married Rhonda Steeves in 1983.

They enjoyed having many dogs over the years and Kurt loved them all.

He belonged to the Arbor Day Society for 30 years and had a very giving spirit. Because education meant a lot to him he has chosen to donate his body to the University of Minnesota Medical School to help students with hands on learning.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years Rhonda, brothers Jerre Johnson of Chanhassen, Carl (Becky) Johnson of Cold Spring, TX. Stepchildren Jeremy and Patrick Williams and two furry children Moose and Misty.

Preceded in death by his parents Jurgen and Clara Johnson, sister Jean Dahl, sister in-law Mary Anne Johnson, nephew Rick Johnson, and stepson Terry Williams.

Kurt called everyone a friend. Memorial will be held at a later date.

Mastersbuilt Race Cars in Crothersville, Indiana for three years. She traveled all over on weekends managing apparel trailers for the Big Boys on the dirt track racing circuit for Keith and Tader Masters. She was united in marriage to Patrick DeFoe in 2014. In 2014, Elaine managed the job of a lifetime, Step on in Thrift in Sauk Centre, working with adults with disabilities. Elaine said, “If you find a job you love to do, you will never work a day in your life.”

She was a member of Women of Today in Sauk Centre, a very fun, smiley organization she truly loved. Elaine loved a bargain, especially at garage sales and while antiquing.

She enjoyed being a mother and grandmother to a lot of “extras” who she adored, but most of all, loved being a mother. Her favorite saying was “Make one person smile each day.”

Survivors include her husband, Pat DeFoe of Sauk Centre; children, Eric (Denise) Gillies of Minot, North Dakota and Bradly (Erin) Gillies of Carlos; seven grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren; and brother, Gordon (Suzanne) Hubert of Sauk Centre.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and her stillborn halfsister, Margaret.

James was a thoughtful man who enjoyed socializing with family and friends. Even though he was born on April first, he was no fool, and not ashamed or afraid to talk about any subject that he felt was relevant and discussion worthy. He will be missed. Marcus J. Meyer

Marcus J. Meyer, age 32 of Sauk Centre died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 in Richmond, Virginia.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20 at River of Life Church in Sauk Centre with Pastor Kyle Peterson officiating.

Inurnment will take place at a later date. The service will be videotaped and can be viewed at the bottom of his obituary Saturday afternoon.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Marcus Jon Meyer was born July 3, 1988 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. His parents are Patrick and Mary (Schwegman) Meyer. On August 15, 2015, he married Natasha Crider at River of Life Church in Sauk Centre. Marcus was a loving husband and father. He loved his family more than anything in this world.

He worked pipeline for the past 5 years for a company in Rockville, Minnesota and was currently working in Richmond, Virginia.

Marcus had a love for sports and music that his two sons will carry on for him. He was larger than life and his memory will be cherished forever .

Survivors include his wife, Natasha Meyer of Sauk Centre; children, Zayden and Jaxon Meyer both at home; parents, Patrick and Mary Meyer of Sauk Centre; sister, Hannah Meyer of Sauk Centre; brother, Owen Meyer of Sauk Centre; grandparents-in-law, Terry and Pat Crider of Sauk Centre; grandmothers, Tudi Schwegman of Sauk Centre and Luckie Bjelland of Melrose, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Irma Anna Hanneman

in 1986. They were married for 52 years and raised their 4 children. Irma was a true farm wife, helping Bill with chores and keeping the farm going. She was an excellent cook and her homemade bread was delicious. She always planted a huge vegetable and flower garden, and canned everything for the winter. In the winter, Irma enjoyed quilting with help from Bill. In their spare time, they enjoyed playing cards with friends, bowling and dancing, especially to the Tennessee waltz. Irma was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School for many, many years. She also worked outside the home for a few years at Crestliner and Larson Boats.

After Bill passed away, Irma sold the farm and moved to Little Falls. She volunteered at TCC as a foster Grandma. As her memory became foggy, she moved to Highland Senior Living, where she enjoyed Bingo and other activities.

Visits from family were loved. She especially cherished her window sill full of art created by her 2 great-granddaughters. Irma was truly loved and will be greatly missed.

Irma is survived by her daughter, Barb Miller of Little Falls; sons, Ron of North Carolina and Bill, Jr. of Coon Rapids; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

Irma was preceded in death by her parents, Ernst and Emma Dobs; husband, Bill in 1999; siblings, Reinhold, Minnie, Clara and Robert; daughter Sandra Ginter and son-inlaw, Ronnie Miller.

Anthony R. Leyendecker

where he attended Paynesville High School graduating in 1990. Tony was currently working at County Cat in Sauk Centre, MN. He enjoyed being outdoors, riding motorcycle, camping, and he especially enjoyed going to rodeos with his family. Tony married Susan Brake on July 13, 2002 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN. He also enjoyed deer hunting and doing carpentry work which he shared his talents with many friends and family.

Megan S. Engebretson

M e g a n S. “Monkey” Engebretson, age 16 of Melrose, died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Friday, March 12, 2021 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 20 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Rev. David Mommens officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose.

The service will be live streamed on Facebook.

Megan Sue Engebretson was born October 23, 2004 in Staples, Minnesota to Melissa Engebretson and Byron Dahl. She was currently a sophomore at Melrose High School.

She lived life to the fullest and enjoyed starting to have some teenage freedom to do what she wanted. She loved spending time with her friends, being on Snapchat, making Tik Tok videos, and watching Heartland. Her family meant the world to her. It is with great sadness to announce that Susan Ramler (Schreifels), 57, passed away peacefully in her home on March 12, 2021 after a yearlong battle with Pancreatic cancer.

The Mass of Christian Burial in remembrance of Evelyn A. Kolodjeski, age 81 of Avon, was held on Wednesday, March 17 at the Seven Dolores Catholic Church in Albany.

Evelyn passed away on Thursday, March 11 at her home in Avon.

Grey Eagle City • February 9, 2021 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 9th day of February 2021 in Council chambers. Council members in attendance in council chambers were Roland Ahrendt, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent.

Also in attendance were John Call, Lori Hellmann and guest Janine Kutter. Guests attending remotely were Bruce Zachman, John Walburn, Joe Krueger, Michael Kohout and Dan Berscheid.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and a roll call vote was taken. Roland Ahrendt– aye, Bill Pohlmann– aye, Brian Hollenkamp– aye, Joe Arnzen– aye. Motion carried.

City Attorney Joe Krueger discussed the moratorium currently in place regarding the building of storage sheds on vacant, undeveloped lots. The moratorium is in place for one year or until the council makes a decision. There are three options for the council to consider but more information will need to be provided before any decisions can be made.

Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club member Janine Kutter was in attendance to discuss items the club would be willing to pay for, such as new banners, new Christmas decorations and new flags.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve a building permit application for Bruce Zachman to move in an 8’x40’ storage container to be placed approximately 12’ feet from the adjoining property, and to paint the container if needed to make it look presentable. Susan Tomsche

Susan Stelman Tomsche (Disch), 64, passed peacefully at home on her birthday with her family by her side after a yearlong battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). She fought hard to the very end, and leaves a legacy of love and caring through a wide network of friends and family. She will be remembered for her enduring kindness, upbeat personality, and high-energy approach to life. Her family affectionately called her the Energizer Bunny because she was always on the move, whether it was driving to Minneapolis and back in an evening to catch a Gophers game, running from client meetings to social events, traveling the world, or just dropping everything to help someone in need. She was a unique and beautiful soul.

Susan was born in Duluth, MN on March 7, 1957 to Lloyd and Betty Sue Disch, the oldest of three. And she lived up to the “oldest” role: She made sure everyone around her was well taken care of, was the first to provide her opinion on any given situation, and more than anything else, loved her family and friends with her whole heart.

A graduate of Duluth Central High School, Susan worked hard while raising her family, and went on to obtain her bachelor’s degree from Concordia University in 1998 before getting licensed to become a financial advisor. She had found her calling, and spent the next 20+ years building a successful practice with Waddell & Reed. She cherished the relationships she

Vandalism: February 27, 2021: A vandalism complaint in Albany Twp., right in the Albany City limits and across from the high school. The building was purchased

by Albany Chrysler and an employee was reporting the vandalism. Three windows on the east of the building had been broken out. Rocks had been thrown at and through the windows and were now laying inside. It did not appear that anyone gained entrance to the building which was verified once they were able to get inside. Officers were able to find some footprints in the snow around the building. They tried to follow them as they led away from the building. They spoke to a few residents in the area but no one had any information to provide or noticed anyone in the area. February 27, 2021: Staff at the Avon Quick Mart reported a male slumped over behind the wheel of a truck by pump 3. They also reported that he had been there since 6:00 a.m. It was now 7:45. Deputy arrived on scene and located the truck. He found an adult male behind the wheel of the running truck, saw that the driver was asleep and heard him snoring slightly. The driver also had his dog with him. The Deputy was able to wake the driver and it quickly became apparent that he had been drinking alcoholic beverages. There was also the odor of marijuana in the cab of the truck. Based on all these observations, the driver, identified as Joshua Horstmann, 30, of New Munich was put through standardized field sobriety tests.

He was arrested and transported him to the Stearns County Jail. Horstmann eventually submitted to a breath test which resulted in a BAC of .18. If you are unfamiliar with the legal threshold in MN, and the rest of the United States, it is .08. In Minnesota anything over a .16 is considered an aggravating factor which bumped this offense up to a gross misdemeanor and also triggers a mandatory hold for court. Horstmann was charged with DWI-GM, Open Bottle and several other offenses related to the narcotics possession and the marijuana. The Deputy was able to contact a friend of Horstmann’s who took custody of the dog and agreed to take care of it while Horstmann was in custody. The friend also later moved the truck away from the pumps so it would not have to be towed.

Susan is preceded in death by her father, Lloyd Disch. She is survived by multitudes of loving family: her beloved, Dan Tomsche; mother, Betty Sue Disch; siblings Steve (Sherrie) Disch and Sally Engen; daughters Marie (Dean) Hensel, Carrie (Benjamin) Kelley, and Casey Stelman; grandchildren Cooper, Carter, and Elise Hensel; John Stelman, the father of her girls; and many cousins, aunts, uncles, and more. She was also loved dearly by her bonus kids: Grant (Andrea) Tomsche, Mackenzie (Justin) Lampert, and Myles (Kaitlyn) Tomsche; and grandkids Ila, Olin, Charlotte, and Ryleigh Tomsche.

The Funeral Mass in remembrance of Susan Stelman Tomsche will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 26 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. There will be a visitation held from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 25 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany as well as one hour prior to the Mass at church from 10-11 AM on Friday. A celebration of life is planned for this summer in Duluth, MN. Details to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the ALS Association, which provided wonderful care and support throughout her journey.

Soil Health: Organic Matter… Matters

If you are a farmer or gardener planning for the 2021 crop year, it is important to keep in mind that there is one component of your growing system that matters more than anything else: soil organic matter (which is the fraction of the soil composed of anything that once lived).

Although soil organic matter usually composes only 2-5% of the soil by volume and much less by weight, it controls 90% of a soil’s function. Increased organic matter means soil surface structure becomes more stable and less prone to crusting and erosion. Water infiltration increases and runoff decreases. Crop health and yields improve, long-term productivity and resiliency increase, and weed, disease, and insect pressure is relieved. It also makes soil more friable or easier to work.

At one time soil scientists felt that no significant changes to organic matter could be made through management. Now we know this to be untrue. There are farmers who are doubling their soil organic matter in less than a decade. Even sandy soils, such as those found in a majority of Todd County, can be managed effectively to increase organic matter from less than 2% to 4-5%. Just a 1 percent increase in soil organic matter correlates to a 0.5” increase of available soil water capacity, helps drought proof your soil, and holds more beneficial soil life and nutrients for your crops.

-Kris Dear Kris, I do recommend most people, if they work outside the home and are married— especially if they have kids—have 10 to 12 times their annual income in a good, level term life insurance policy. You only need life insurance to take care of things you leave behind when you die. So, when it comes to this kind of coverage, just think about anyone who might be left in a bad financial situation if you died. Your family could never replace you, but in most cases, they would need to replace your income.

Someone in your shoes might not need a traditional life insurance policy, especially if you’ve been smart with your money and saved up a pile of cash. A simple, inexpensive burial policy might work.

-Justice Dear Justice, If you think you can have the car paid off in two years or less, that’s what I’d do.

The question is this: Are you willing to do what it’ll take to make that happen? It’s going to mean lots of discipline and hard work on your part, in addition to living on a really strict budget. But in return, you’ll have that car loan off your back for good.

You don’t want the debt on all your vehicles to be more than half of your annual income. If that’s the case, it means you have too much money tied up in things that are going down in value. If you bring home $2,800 a month, you probably make around $40,000 a year. Technically, your car loan is under half in this scenario, but it’s still pretty expensive. I’d get serious about getting out of debt, and pay the thing off!

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2012 Dodge Ram 3500 truck with a diesel engine. Recently I had my catalytic converter and particulate filter stolen from the truck. This is the third time that this has happened to me. I have been told that the filter is almost worth nothing on the used marked for scrap and that the converter is about worthless too because it is a diesel.

The first two times the insurance covered the cost which was near 7k dollars labor and tax included but this time although they are covering it, they say they are going to raise my rates because I am now what they call high risk due to three thefts of the same parts in three years. I live in an apartment complex that otherwise seems to be safe. What can I do and why do they keep stealing worthless parts?

Many are just the latest trends and think that all following converters are valuable. If they get caught, they will likely get hung with multiple thefts and be looking at a long time behind bars.

Hopefully, they will catch your thieves.

Look into catalytic converter lock cables on the internet. This or welded log chain has been a major deterrent for theft.

-Troy in Dearborn Heights, Michigan Dear Troy, If this van was blowing fuses that often we must wonder if the bulbs are not the load that the factory has specified the vehicle to use, or they are somehow damaged. You do not say in your email to us, but we have to ask, have you removed the bulbs to inspect them. It sounds like a first place to start but it seems like every month we have at least one vehicle comes in with failed headlamps or tail lamps and the fix was to simply replace the bulbs. The customers just thought that there is no way that both could go at the same time, but they can. And, If someone changed them to high powered bulbs, they could pull too much current and blow fuses.

The Reverend Hollis Bishop passed away peacefully on Monday, March 8th, 2021 at the age of 81. Hollis had a brief battle with cancer but spent his final weeks pain free and comfortable, enjoying many conversations with beloved friends and family members.

Hollis Bishop was born on September 20th, 1939 in Bigfork, MN. The son of Jesse and Mildred (Wright) Bishop, he was the youngest of five siblings.

Hollis spent most of his youth in Bigfork, prior to moving to the Minneapolis area and graduating from Edison High School. It was during his high school years that Hollis was baptized into the body of Christ, on Christmas Eve. Throughout his life, Hollis considered his baptism to be a 2nd birthday. Following high school, Hollis earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Korea in the early 1960’s.

On August 7th, 1965 Hollis married Jane Richter at Christ English Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Hollis and Jane lived in the Twin Cities while he completed studies at Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary.

He was ordained a Minister of the Lutheran Church in America on June 14th, 1970.

Hollis served many congregations over the course of his life as he, Jane, and their children moved throughout the Midwest. Between 1970 and his retirement in 2001, Reverend Bishop lived out his calling to make the love of God and salvation through Jesus known to others as he faithfully served seven different congregations.

Upon his “retirement”, he and Jane moved to Long Prairie, MN where he continued his ministry and service through his work at many area churches.

Hollis loved talking with anyone about anything, telling stories, laughing, making new friends, and helping others with his abounding generosity. He thoroughly enjoyed the years he spent teaching college courses and GED classes, earning his Master’s Degree, writing, and volunteering for the many organizations he supported. Hollis loved his family and friends dearly and was an incredibly caring husband, father and grandfather. He truly appreciated the love and generosity of others and in his final weeks was especially appreciative of the many wonderful conversations he had with loved ones.

Hollis was preceded in death by his parents Jesse and Mildred Bishop, Brother Jesse Lyle Bishop, and Daughters Sara, Elizabeth, and Andrea Bishop.

Hollis is survived by his wife Jane Bishop, son and daughter in law: Dave and Amber Bishop, grandchildren: Bennett, Millie, and Maggie Bishop and PJ, Katie, and Annie Svendsen, great-grandson: James Ryan Fox, brothers: Don Bishop and Ron Bishop, sister: Jean Hamlin, extended family: Lou and Mary Svendsen, and many other family members and dear friends.

A memorial service is being planned for May 21st, 2021 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN. This posting will be updated with details as they become available.

A fund has been created in Reverend Bishop’s honor to provide support for youth programming to some of the churches he served.

Thank his wife for cooking, delivering meals, going for parts, or helping in the fields all while taking care of her usual jobs.

Thank his hired man for working endless hours on sleepless nights caring for the animals and planting the crops.

And Thank his children who are OK with seeing him if just for a brief moment while he eats his meals in the field.

Farming is a family business and it takes a sacrifice from all...
