Losing isn’t the opposite of winning, it can be a part of winning

By Harvey Mackay V i n c e Lombardi once said, “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.”

Like most kids growing up, the importance of finishing first or winning was always stressed.

As a competitive person, I thought that second place was the same as last.

Losing was a source of shame and bitterness. No one wants to be defined as a loser. In short, everyone wants to win.

Brandon Steiner, the owner and founder of the huge sports memorabilia company that bears his name, gave me some good advice recently. He told me that losing isn’t the opposite of winning;

it’s a part of winning.

The more I think about his statement, the more I agree. However, I would make one small change: Losing isn’t the opposite of winning; it CAN be part of winning. I clarify that because losing can also become a habit. But if you use losing as a learning experience, then you can be headed for success.

In the sports world, how many times do you hear championship teams discuss how a certain loss triggered their championship run? It served as a wake-up call, an opportunity to see where they could improve. Losing helped them change their mindset. It demonstrated that in many cases, you have to learn how to win. And losing provides a powerful lesson.

My advice is to embrace all results.

The most important outcome is what you learned from it. Few people win all the time, but you can be better prepared to play the game and compete if you have experienced losing and learned what it takes to win.

Your goal should be to improve in areas where you have weaknesses and seek challenges that will stretch you and help you grow. A good competitor will help you point out your mistakes and weaknesses, so pay attention.

For me, sales is a competitive sport.

Whenever I win or lose an account, I want to know why. Debriefing is critical.

I have no problem being straightforward and asking clients for feedback.

I want to know how I can improve.

If you lose an account, ask for a separate meeting within the week. Tell your prospect you respect their decision and do not want to change their mind.

You just want to learn and improve. At the meeting, never be antagonistic. You are there to listen and learn.

You wouldn’t believe how many times this process helped me – not only with my own performance, but in getting the business when the current supplier didn’t deliver as promised.

You always want to leave your prospect on good terms. Even if you never sell to that person, you’ve made a friend by respecting their decision.

You won’t get serious about winning until you get serious about learning. It’s such a simple lesson, and one I guarantee will serve you forever.

Everyone makes mistakes in the course of his or her career, and no matter how much you learn, you’re not immune.

My good friend, leadership guru John Maxwell, cautions: “A loss doesn’t turn into a lesson unless we work hard to make it so. Losing gives us an opportunity to learn, but many people do not seize it. And when they don’t, losing really hurts.”

Maxwell advises that it’s difficult to positively respond after defeat. He said it takes discipline to do the right thing when everything goes wrong.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Ice

Some of us can remember a rather attractive insulated wooden piece of furniture which was usually found in either the kitchen or the pantry in early homes.

These items were referred to as an ice box and were used from the early 1800’s into the 1940’s. There was a need to keep perishable foods for a longer period of time and if kept cool, they lasted longer.

The northern part of our country produced ice for about 4 or more months per year. The problem was how to keep the ice during the warmer months.

An industry was created to solve this problem, but rural individuals solved the problem at home.

The ice was harvested from lakes by cutting the ice with ice saws that were similar to a cross-cut saw, but had a handle on only one end. Curved saws like a cross-cut were used to make the initial cut through the ice, so that the ice saws could be used to cut strips and blocks of ice. It was then cut into blocks which were sized so that they could be moved with ice tongs and placed on ice wagons and moved to the ice storage

area. The storage area was a shed, which when filled with ice, was covered with at least a foot of sawdust to keep the ice frozen until the next winter arrived.

Those in the ice business created a regular route of ice delivery during the summer months. That is where the term “the ice man cometh” was originated.

The ice would last as long as a week in the ice boxes.

The farmers made their own ice and stored it in the same way, since they could produce ice free, rather than buying it.

Technology created advancements in the harvesting of ice. Gas motors were used to power circular shaped, hooktoothed saw blades, which reduced the need for manual labor to cut the ice. The saws were moved across the ice, making a cut as they went. The delivery of the ice changed from horse power to truck power to create better efficiency.

With the arrival of electricity and home refrigeration, ice boxes moved to categories of either antiques or junk. Their importance is stored in the memories of those who can think back to “the good old days”.

Lucy replies: “Look at it this way, Charlie Brown. We learn more from losing than we do from winning.”

To which Charlie replies, “That makes me the smartest person in the world!”

House approves bill to significantly reduce high-risk insurance premiums The Minnesota House of Representatives on Monday approved a bill which aims to provide double-digit reductions on health insurance premiums by mitigating the impact of high-risk consumers in the individual market.

Dubbed the Minnesota Premium Security Plan, the proposal would establish a state-based reinsurance program administered by the Minnesota Comprehensive Health Association, which for more than 40 years ran a high-risk pool that brought stability to the individual market and ensured the sickest Minnesotans had access to coverage. Projections indicate the move could reduce premiums by approximately 18 percent.

“Our state had the reputation of being a national leader in health insurance but, unfortunately, some of the good services we provided were diminished with the implementation of Obamacare and MNsure,” said Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck. “This bill would help us restore some of what was lost, increasing access to insurance and reducing costs for the people in our state who need it

most.”

The new program would be funded by existing revenue sources. The MCHA board, comprised of members of the public and health plan experts, would design payment parameters to mitigate risk, stabilize or reduce premium rates, increase participation, and account for federal funding available for the plan.

Parameters would be submitted to the Department of Commerce for approval. The board also would have the authority to audit eligible health carriers and is required to contract with an independent auditor for an annual reinsurance program.

The House bill (H.F. 5) passed 7853. The Senate is expected to vote on a similar proposal in the coming weeks.

Obituaries Don R. Stuckel

Don R. Stuckel, 73, of Independence, MO, formerly Melrose MN, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2017.

Don was born August 12, 1943 in Long Prairie, MN to Arthur and Clara Stuckel. He served 3 years in the US Army, stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Don’s love for his friends and especially

his family was without question. You could always count on him for a helping hand, a shoulder for support or to cry on and God given honest advise whether you wanted to hear it or not. Don will be dearly missed but will continue to live in our hearts.

Don is survived by his wife JoAnn, daughter Kim; grandsons Parker and Carter Fish and a brother, John Stuckel.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Clara Stuckel and his sister Nanette (Stuckel) Burger.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. on Saturday March 25, 2017; Mass will be at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grey Eagle.

Ronald David Boos

Services celebrating the life of Ronald D. Boos, 84, Burtrum, will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 20, 2017, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Upsala. There will be a visitation one hour prior to services.

Pastor CJ Boettcher will officiate the service. A private burial will be held at a later date at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little

Falls. Ron passed away after several months at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Sauk Rapids, which provided excellent care.

Arrangements are being made with MillerCarlin Funeral Home, Upsala.

Ron was born on July 21, 1932, to Charles and Leona (Emon) Boos in Minneapolis and he grew up with one brother. He joined the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. On June 19, 1954, Ron married Janet Faye Watson in Minneapolis and together raised three children. He was employed at Wonder Bread before working as a Janitorial Engineer/HVAC. Ron retired at age 60 after 30 years with the Minneapolis Public Schools. He and Janet then moved to their lake home where he was a member of the Mound Lake Association. Ron loved to be outside hunting and fishing with his boys.

He and Janet enjoyed spending winters in Lake Havasu, AZ with many others from Mound Lake.

Ron is survived by his children Toni (Dale) Merrill, St. Cloud; Brett (Autumn) Boos, Eden Prairie; Jay Boos, Burtrum; his brother Gary (Carol) Boos, NC; as well as many other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife Janet in January 2016, and his parents Charles and Leona Boos.

Lorraine B. Hoeschen, age 86 of Freeport, died peacefully on Monday, March 13, 2017 surrounded by her family at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, March 18 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Eberhard Schefers officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m.

Friday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Freeport. Goldenaires Senior Citizens and Christian Women will pray at 4 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 5 p.m.

Lorraine Bernadine Koopmeiners was born June 28, 1930 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Bernard and Veronica (Pohlmann) Koopmeiners. On September 21, 1950, she married Lawrence B. Hoeschen at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis, Minnesota.

After their marriage, they farmed near Upsala before moving to the home farm near Freeport. After farming, she worked at Jennie-O Foods in Melrose for 20 plus years. Lorraine enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, canning, and walking. She also enjoyed square dancing and ballroom dancing, but most of all, spending time

Michael Applegate

M i c h a e l Applegate, 60 year old resident of Bowlus, MN died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 12 at his home. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 16 at 11:00 A.M. at Emblom Brenny Funeral Service in Little Falls, MN. A visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 A.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. The burial will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls.

Michael Thomas Applegate was born July 5, 1956 in Saint Cloud to James and Wilhelmina (Dirschel) Applegate. He grew up in Saint Cloud and attended St. Mary’s and St. Cloud Tech High. After high school he entered the United States Navy and served his country. He received an

honorable discharge from the United States Navy and returned to Minnesota. He made his home in Bowlus, where he enjoyed tinkering in his garage. Michael could make use of anything that he found, he was always willing to try a new invention. He treasured his time spent on his motorcycle.

His family will always remember his Goulash recipe.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Wilhelmina “Billie” Applegate of Sauk Rapids; significant other, Susan Olson of Bowlus; her children, Crystal Siltman of Rice, Kurt Olson of Colorado and five grandchildren; siblings, David (Pamela) Applegate of Saint Cloud, Patrick (Nancy) of Waite Park; Barbara (Paul) Lenzen of Saint Cloud, Kathleen “Casey” (Kevin) Kennedy of Saint Cloud, Nancy Applegate-Nakhleh of Falls Church, V.A.; special niece, Kiri Surma of Big Lake and many nieces and nephews.

Tom was born on February 7, 1960 in St. Cloud to Dennis Zipp and Mary Gardner. He graduated from Sartell High

School in 1978. Tom married Annette Holladay on September 22, 1984 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids. He worked as an Auto Mechanic for many years at Klein Oldsmobile and most recently for the Sisters of St. Benedict in St. Joseph.

He loved spending time with his family. Tom also enjoyed snowmobiling, four wheeling, and the lake cabin.

Tom is survived by his wife; sons, Derrick of St. Cloud, Jacob (Fiancée, Adrianna) of Sartell; granddaughters, Arianna and Hanna; father, Dennis of St. Cloud; siblings, James (Lori Ring) of Rice, Theresa (Randal) McNeal of Rice, Dale (Lori) of Sauk Rapids and Joseph of St. Cloud; and many nieces and nephews.

Lorraine Kathryn Hedin Lorraine “Gossy” Hedin, age 95, died at peace Tuesday at the CentraCare Health SystemsLong Prairie.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 11:00 Saturday, March 11, 2017, at St. Mary of Mount Carmel in Long Prairie, MN. Father Omar Guanchez officiated and burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Lorraine Kathryn Gossler was born in rural Long Prairie to Joseph and Anna (Laumeyer) Gossler. She graduated from Long Prairie High School where she was active in class plays. She married Orville “Barney” Hedin on March 28, 1942. Her work life included waitressing at Farmer’s Inn, Grill Café, and The Hub. Later she worked for Dr. Keith Blake and retired from First National Bank where she worked as a drive-up teller. She volunteered as hockey concessions manager at the Todd County

Expo Center, Meals on Wheels, and at the Long Prairie Nursing Home. She was a Gold Star Mother and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary for over 50 years.

Survivors left to honor and cherish her memory include daughters, June (Rocky) Elmes of Long Prairie, Karen (Herb) Till of Nokomis, Florida, Joan (Russ) Niskanen of Alexandria, MN; brothers, Florian Gossler of Decatur, MI, Robert (Shirley) Gossler of Sauk Centre, MN; sister, Trudy (Herb) Neuerberg of Brainerd, MN; sisters-in-laws, Jean Gossler and Wilma Hedin; grandchildren, Susan Lowe, Joseph (Suzanne) Elmes, Andrea Elmes, and Patrick (Carrie) Elmes; Larry Till, Doug (Kelly) Till, and David (Jen) Till; Gary Niskanen, Christopher (Jen) Niskanen and Andrew Niskanen; 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom she gave unconditional love.

Lorraine was a cheerful woman who had a spontaneous wit. She briefly worked at Schulzetenberg Hardware in Melrose where she said she “met Ed over the nuts and bolts”. They married in 1948. Her life was simple and joyous from being a wife, a mother, and a friend. She was not a seeker of adventures or experiences as she felt she had everything she needed “right here” meaning the essence of her life was her spouse, her children, her community, and her community of friends. Her Catholic faith was also central to her life but was more private. It was attending Mass on Sunday, a candle lit before the storm, a rosary said while washing a load of whites.

Lorraine always stuck to the basics, to the nuts and bolts. She was a good woman. She lived a good life. She is already missed.

Swanville Sr. High February Student of the Month Kiley Loven has been selected as Swanville’s Senior High Student of the Month for February. Kiley, a senior, is the daughter of John and Tanya Loven. She plans to attend MSU-Moorhead for a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. This year Kiley was a captain of her team in volleyball and basketball, both of which she has played since seventh grade. Kiley is also active in softball and band, and she’s been a part of theatre, Student Council, and HCC. Coach Aaron Gapinski shares “Kiley Loven is an excellent choice for Student of the Month. Kiley enjoys playing sports, hanging with friends and family, fishing, listening to music, drawing, and is a part of youth group. Kiley would advise other students to not take anything for granted and to get involved because high school goes by fast.

Volleyball coach Erin Sabayan added “Kiley’s commitment to success is apparent in athletics and academics.

She was one of four seniors on the volleyball team and really stepped up her leadership on and off the court. As a first year volleyball coach, I knew I could go to Kiley for help or ideas for drills that we could do as a team. She was always willing to help other players in practice to make sure they had the one-on-one attention needed to be successful. Kiley was very coachable, always striving to better herself and accept constructive criticism to improve. She went from struggling with her passing to being a strong passer. I’ve had the privilege of watching Kiley interact with younger students. She definitely has what is needed to be a successful teacher. She is compassionate, caring, understanding and motivated. Kiley will be successful in her collegiate career and beyond.

For Stearns Electrict District 7 Director

Every 3 years a director is elected in each of the Stearns Electric Districts. This year an election is being held in District 7. Customers in District 7 will be receiving a ballot in the mail, which can either be returned by mail or presented in person at the Stearns Electric annual meeting.

I am a candidate for the Director’s position. I feel that there is a need to have more contact with the Stearns Electric Customers. This would be in the areas of contact with new customers, suggestions for more conservative uses of electricity and encouragement to take a more active role in their electric association membership.

We must never overlook the importance of “the heart.”

Certainly the author of Psalm 78 had this in mind. As he reflected on the trials and tragedies of the Israelites, he called attention to the fact that the preceding generations did not put their trust in God and forgot the gracious gifts He gave them. He encouraged them to obey God’s laws and not be like their forefathers.

And how were they to do this? What was his “prescription” for them? They were to have “hearts that were loyal to God and spirits that were faithful to Him.” Wisely, this psalmist gave a warning to his listeners. And, thankfully, God passed it on to us in His Word.

Someone once said to me, “Larry, learn from what sin has done in the lives of others. If you do, you will be blessed of God and able to enjoy the best He has to offer.”

Surely this is the right moment for each of us to look deep within our “hearts” and be sure we are loyal to God.

Real ID implementation hits a snag The road to passage of Real ID legislation became a bit more rocky last week after the Senate defeated the proposal. Their bill, similar to but not the same as the House version, would have provided a two-track system for residents to either opt for the new driver’s license that will be necessary to board commercial aircraft next year or keep their current licenses.

Another controversial topic, that of granting drivers licenses to undocumented residents, has become part of the conversation. It has come up the past few years but never gained any traction. The situation is somewhat unclear as it’s believed by some that current rule making allows to governor to grant the privilege of drivers licenses to those who aren’t citizens. Language in the House Real ID bill clears that up by saying licenses would only be available to citizens. Opponents of that want this bill, in addition to dealing with the topic of Real ID, to grant authority for licenses to be granted to residents who are not citizens.

And that’s where we sit today. With some legislators wanting to deal with both issues in the same bill, it’s unclear if progress can be made. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking toward next January when the Real ID or a passport will be required to board a plane at the airport.

It would make sense to deal with each issue separately on its own merit, and not combine the two into one bill. Each of them is controversial on its own, and to put them together will make it even more difficult to pass.

policy committees. In Ag. Policy, we marked up the omnibus bill on Tuesday, received amendments on Wednesday, and passed the bill out of committee Thursday afternoon. It now awaits floor action.

This week will also be busy as the second deadline approaches. Bills that had hearings in the other legislative chamber can still be heard this week, but they must make it through all policy committees by Friday. Spending targets will be released soon, probably sometime this week, as finance committees begin their job of assembling the bills that will finance state government for the next two years. It’s amazing to realize that even if we didn’t increase spending at all in some areas, such as pre K-12 education or Health and Human Services, those budgets would still go up by millions of dollars in the new biennium. That’s because of automatic spending increases for some programs and, in the case of education, more students expected in our schools next year. And since funding is based on the number of students, an increase in the pupil count means more state aid to schools.

Talk of an early spring has subsided as winter made another appearance over the weekend. Roads were slick in the metro area as several inches of snow fell Sunday afternoon. Cold temps have stalled what may have been the earliest ice-out dates on record. Lake Minnewaska was open on the north side over the weekend as strong winds pushed the ice several hundred yards out. According to DNR records, going back over 100 years, the earliest ice-out for the state’s 11th largest lake is March 21. Unless spring returns quickly, beating that date looks to be difficult.

Swanville City February 7, 2017 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, February 7, 2017. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, and Jim Molitor. Also present: Joe Krueger, Tim and Linda Dally, Cindy Bruggenthies, Mark Hallen, Reporter Sheila McCoy, and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, January 3, 2017 were reviewed. A motion was made by. Jim Molitor to approve the minutes as printed.

Tony Maciej seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

With the present city attorney, Tim Churchwell, being appointed judge for Douglas County the council was advised to consider Joe Kruger as city attorney. Joe Kruger attorney from Brown & Krueger was present to introduce himself and answered questions council had. A legal services contract for 2017 was presented to council. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to appoint Joe Krueger as city attorney and sign the legal services agreement contract for 2017 which includes an hourly rate of $115.00. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Tim and Linda Dally were present to discuss with council the purchase agreement for the two lots in the Berkey Avenue North project on which to build one, possibly two four-plex apartment complex.

Joe Krueger informed the council that he represents both the City of Swanville and the Dally’s in regards to the purchase agreement.

However if an issue should arise in regards to the purchase agreement both parties would have to find new council to represent them.

Krueger presented an agreement to consent representation despite conflicts. After discussion, Norm Carlson made a motion to sign the agreement. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor except Jim Molitor, who has concerns about the agreement.

Motion carried. Kruger then presented the purchase agreement with Tim & Linda Dally and the City of Swanville of Lot 1, Block 2 on North Berkey for $1.00 with the City providing a TIF District.

The agreement also states the Dally’s have the option to purchase Lot 1, Block 1, Berkey Avenue North until December 31, 2020 to build another four-plex apartment complex. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to sign the purchase agreement. Tony Maciej

seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

There will be six lots for sale to the north of the four-plex land. A covenant will need to be wrote up on a time line to build and on the purchase price.

Cindy Bruggentheis, branch manager for Swanville Great River Regional Library, was present to visit with the council and let them know about attendance and programs going on with the Swanville Library. The library has new after school/early evening hours. Cindy invites people around the area to come and check out the Swanville Library and programs offered.

Lonny Hutchins, city maintenance worker, reported that the city water tower had a dry tank/ clean out evaluation performed.

Suggestions and improvements were made in the report which was handed out to council. At this time no actions will be taken.

Lonny also reported on the Pillsbury Beach erosion project.

There is a shoreline matching grant with the MPCA that the city will be applying for to help defray the cost of the erosion project. Putting in a fishing pier by the beach is being looked into also.

The maintenance worker annual wage was visited by the council. After discussion Jim Molitor made a motion to raise the annual wage from $36,000.00+60% health care+disability ins &2 weeks paid vacation to $40,000.00 +above benefits and cell phone fee.

Tony Maciej seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The mower bid was revisited. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to purchase a new mower for $1833.52 + 2015 mower trade- in from Powerhouse Outdoor Equipment. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All member voted in favor, motion carried. Jim will get an estimate for possibly purchasing a bagger for the new mower.

Red’s Irish Pub liquor licenses will be expiring in the middle of April, 2017. Jim Molitor made a motion to renew the liquor licenses for Red’s Pub for one year with the same fees as last year: Off Sale $100.00, On Sale $1750.00, and Sunday License $150.00, for a total of $2000.00.

Mayor Lange seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The clerk will send out the necessary paper work with invoice to Red’s Pub. Council asked the clerk to check with other cities in the area to see what their liquor licenses are.

Norm Carlson reported at the last Senior Center meeting they discussed putting up a hand railing by the south side of the front door.

Council did not see a problem with the railing.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with

a listing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. A Public Hearing will take place at 6:45 p.m. to hear input on setting up a TIF District on the Berkey Avenue North Project.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Tony Maciej to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mail included advertising from Central Applicators for spraying, Todd County Township meeting, and the Aquatic Invasive Species Program, Crisis line – donation request, Short Course dates, and census information.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported a culvert on the south end of 321st had been steamed open, however the one on the north side of 321st near Meagher property could not be located. He will continue to watch water levels on 321st. Street. The rest of the culverts looked good. Discussed grading- no decision was made.

Joseph A. Kruzel

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am, Saturday, March 25, 2017 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church for Joseph A. Kruzel, age 89, of Long Prairie who passed away Tuesday at Highland Senior Living Center in Little Falls. Fr. Omar Guanchez will officiate and burial with military honors will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Prairie. Family and friends may call one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Arrangements entrusted to Williams Dingmann Funeral Home – Stein Chapel, Long Prairie.

Joseph Anthony Kruzel was born February 5, 1928 in Little Falls, Minnesota, the son of Joseph and Agnes (Prokott) Kruzel. He grew up on a farm near Sobieski and attended country school there. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged.

Lloyd F. Fedor

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Lloyd F. Fedor, 82, Holdingford, was at 11:00 AM Monday, March 13, 2017 at the Church of All Saints – St. Hedwig, Holdingford.

Father Greg Mastey officiated and burial with military honors followed in the parish cemetery. Lloyd passed away unexpectedly at his home Wednesday afternoon.

Lloyd was born on December 8, 1934 to Frank and Helen (Scegura) Fedor in Holdingford. He attended a country school before graduating from Holdingford High School. A few years later, Lloyd was drafted into the United States Army and stationed in

4, 1951 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton. They farmed near Grey Eagle until 1968. Joe also did carpentry work. In 1970, the family moved into Grey Eagle and in 1971 they moved to Long Prairie. He worked in the bindery at Hart Press (RR Donnelly) until retiring. He was also the caretaker for the cemeteries in Long Prairie for many years.

Joe was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, and the Long Prairie American Legion and V.F.W. He enjoyed cutting wood and mowing the grass.

Joe is survived by his children, Shirley (Gordy) Reecy, Grey Eagle, Robert (Lynn) Kruzel, Long Prairie, Sharon Kruzel, Long Prairie, Ronald (Debra) Kruzel, Sobieski, Lawrence (Joan) Kruzel, Long Prairie, Carl (Corinne) Kruzel, Florissat, MO, Kevin Kruzel, Little Falls, Lyle (Mary) Kruzel, Browerville, and Charlene Kruzel, Dunnegan, MO; brother, Tony Kruzel, Little Falls; sister, Mary Brezinka, Royalton; 21 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and nine great-greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jean in 2012, infant daughter Mary, grandson Cody Kruzel, great-granddaughter Gracianna Reecy, and four brothers Sylvester, Frank, Danny, and John.

Germany during Peacekeeping Time post WWII. On July 6, 1959, he married Ramona Luethmers in St. Wendel and together they raised five children. Lloyd’s passion was flying and it was his dream to become a pilot.

He achieved this in his 40s and enjoyed being a private pilot, flying recreationally, and took an impressive trip with his nephew to Seattle, WA and Canada. Many people enjoyed the rides he gave in his Cessna 172.

Lloyd and Ramona worked their dairy farm until 1998, but he kept farming into his 80s, finally retiring in 2015. Lloyd loved fishing, ice fishing/spearing, and water skiing. He also liked to drive around his Model A and Model T antique trucks. Lloyd was a generous and meticulous man of deep faith.

He was a member of a Saturday morning men’s prayer group and was very involved with his community. Lloyd was a member of the American Legion and a 4th degree Knight. He was an active member of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church.

State Fair and Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation Accepting Century Farm Applications Deadline is April 3 Minnesota families who have owned their farms for 100 years or more may apply for the 2017 Century Farms Program. Produced by the Minnesota State Fair in conjunction with the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation, the Century Farms Program was created to promote agriculture and honor historic family farms in the state. More than 10,000 Minnesota farms have been honored since the program began in 1976.

Family farms are recognized as Century Farms when three requirements are met. The farm must be: 1) at least 100 years old according to authentic land records; 2) in continuous family ownership for at least 100 years (continuous residence on the farm is not required); and 3) at least 50 acres.

A commemorative certificate signed

by State Fair Board of Managers President Sharon Wessel, Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation President Kevin Paap and Governor Mark Dayton will be awarded to qualifying families, along with an outdoor sign signifying Century Farm status.

Applications are available online at mnstatefair.org (click the “Recognition Programs” link at the bottom of the home page); at fbmn.org; by calling the State Fair at (651) 288-4400; or at statewide county extension and county Farm Bureau offices. The submission deadline is Monday, April 3. Recipients will be announced in May. Previously recognized families should not reapply.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

March 13, 2017: At 12:13 a.m. there was a report of a one vehicle accident with possible injuries on 60th Avenue, just south of 30th Street in Elmdale Township near Upsala. According to the Sheriff’s Office, 37 year old Terry Runge of Eagle Bend was traveling north on 60th Ave. when his pickup left the roadway, hit an approach and struck a telephone pole. Runge was transported to St. Gabriel’s Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance with unknown injuries. The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Brainerd State Patrol and Gold Cross Ambulance.

March 8, 2017: At 12:28 Todd County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a one vehicle accident that occurred near the address of 23457 Ginseng Road on the edge of Long Prairie. 73 year old James Steuck, rural Long Prairie, was heading west out of town on Ginseng Road when he left the roadway and struck a tree. James was transported to the Long Prairie Hospital.

Steuck later passed away at the hospital.

The accident and cause of death are still under investigation. The Long Prairie Police Department, Long Prairie Ambulance, and Long Prairie Fire Rescue assisted at the scene.

March 13, 2017: At 21:39 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of mailbox vandalism. The vandalism occurred at the address of 22080 County Road 6. Anyone with information about any other mailbox damage is encouraged to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

March 14, 2017: At 09:43 the Todd County Highway Department reported two signs were damaged sometime in the last week. One road closed sign at the intersection of County 104 and 321st Ave. south of Swanville had been spray painted and the other was a stop sign at the intersection of County 11 and County 36 west of Long Prairie had been shot by a paint ball.

The collection company has offered us three or four different payment options.

Does the original creditor accept the agreement, too, if we accept one of the collection agency’s options?

-Anonymous Dear Anonymous, In most situations of this type, the collection agency owns the debt outright or they’re directly representing the original creditor. It’s pretty much standard operating procedure when someone has defaulted on a loan.

My advice would be to accept the deal they’ve offered that makes the most sense for you and your current financial situation. It’ll ding your credit report, and show a settlement on the defaulted credit card, but that’s not the end of the world. There’s already a mark against you for it being turned over to collections.

If you want to keep things like this from happening in the future, you need to get control of your finances. Stop playing with credit cards!
