Perseverance pays off -By Harvey Mackay The popular Academy Award nominated movie “Darkest Hour” has brought a lot of attention to former British Prime Minister Winston C h u r c h i l l recently. It’s also brought a lot of attention to Gary Oldman, who won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Churchill.

According to biographers, Churchill did not have the happiest of childhoods.

Neglected by his uninterested parents, he was sent to boarding school at a young age where he would write letter after letter pleading for his parents to

visit him. Most of his requests went unanswered, and he ended up spending a succession of holidays alone at school without even the company of classmates.

Churchill would go on to suffer many failures both at school and in his political life, failures that would have defeated most people. But Churchill kept persevering, overcoming great odds and eventually leading his country in its finest hour.

How did a man with such a difficult upbringing and spotty professional record achieve such greatness?

The answer may lie in the following story: In his eighties, Churchill was asked to deliver a commencement address at Harrow, the boarding school he attended as a boy. He is reported to have stood up at the podium, glared over his glasses, and delivered one of the shortest, yet most inspiring speeches ever given at a graduation ceremony.

“Never give up! Never give up!

Never give up!” he roared. Then he sat down to thunderous applause.

What a tremendous lesson in perseverance!

Perseverance separates the winners from the losers. Those who persevere understand that luck is something only failures believe in. Perseverance has other names – persistence,

determination, a can-do attitude.

Success in life depends on your willingness to never give up, even when the reward is delayed.

One of my guilty pleasures is that I occasionally stop at McDonald’s for a hamburger and a caramel sundae.

The phenomenal success of the Golden Arches franchise is evident throughout the world. How was such a dynasty built? Why is Ronald McDonald a household name? The answer rests in the motto adopted by its founder, Ray Kroc. It simply reads, “Press On.” As U.S. President Calvin Coolidge said: “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent.

Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

In my line of work – sales – persistence takes on a special meaning.

Somewhere between throwing in the towel and being a pest, you might find wisdom in this Code of Persistence for salespeople developed by Herman Sherman. Resolve to: Never give up so long as you know you are right.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Kid’s Dream

I really wanted one. In my mind I really needed one. It occupied my thoughts during the day when I was checking my gopher traps, when getting the cows from the pasture and when walking to the lake to go fishing. It was always there when I first came to bed and had not yet gone to sleep. I’m sure I prayed about it.

I believe it was the first material thing that I ever really wanted.

Then one evening it happened. I was staying at my grandparents for the day and I discovered an old bicycle squeezed up against the wall of the machine shed. There was a grain binder pushed against it and a corn binder on the side. I pushed, pulled and lifted trying to get that “beautiful” thing out.

I even used a pipe to pry the wheels to hopefully move the grain binder to free up the pressure against the bike. After the milking was done my grandfather and uncle helped me create enough room to lift the bike from it’s imprisonment.

There she was. No fenders, flat tires, a chain hanging from the peddles, no chain guard and a seat made of bare metal. Just what I always wanted.

While my uncle put the chain back on, I pumped up the tires. Time for a trial run! My uncle did the first ride, since I had never been on a bike. This first ride produced the first problem.

Since there was no chain shield, my uncle’s right pant leg became promptly wrapped up between the chain and the sprocket, which we later corrected by wrapping the pant leg close to his leg with a rubber band. Problem solved.

The fiasco created by getting his pant leg out of the chain brought an audience from the house. My grandma, grandpa, two aunts and a neighbor came to see what the excitement was about. The dog knew something special was happening, so he became excited and with the next ride, he, while running beside the bike, caught his tail between the rear sprocket and the chain. This caused excruciating pain for the dog, who was howling, crying and attempting to get at his tail to stop the pain. The problem was solved by loosening the back wheel to relieve the tension on the chain. A gate was put between the person loosening the chain

and the dog, since the concern was that the dog could possibly bite someone if there was an increase in the pain to his tail. He got out and had a crook in his tail to show a remembrance of the occasion.

I was allowed to put the bike in the trunk of dad’s car and take it home. Now is when the learning began. My dad had never been on a bike, so my driving skills were self taught. I developed a fear of falling with the bike, primarily because my knees and one elbow were full of scabs. I found that it seemed to work best if I walked the bike up the driveway and rode it back down. Since my riding skills were limited and the fear of crashing was constantly on my mind, I sometimes rode the bike to places I didn’t want to go. In one situation, I lost control and smashed my bike into my grandma’s flower bed, tearing up her favorite Begonia and a bunch of other flowers. She forgave me at the time and later gave me a hug and told me that the Begonia had again rooted and would live.

Although my eight year old legs were only long enough to only fully reach the peddles if I was off the seat, I ultimately spent many hours on the bike.

I was able to get on the bike along with my 5 gallon fish pail, worm pale, frog can, tackle box, cane pole and fishing rod and still get to the water faster than if I walked. Traveling through the woods to get the cows and across the fields to check the gopher traps became an everyday task for the bike. Since my nearest friends lived more than a mile away, the bike made me much more efficient.

Not every kid’s dream has positive results, but my bike dream worked well.

A few generations ago Susan B. Anthony was both a revered and despised political figure. In the late 1800s she tirelessly fought for a woman’s right to vote, a law that was not enacted until several years after her death. American women have only been able to vote since 1920.

At that time, the majority opinion was that women need not vote or be equal to men, and that anyone trying to change the status quo was simply a troublemaker. Still, Anthony soldiered on, and eventually earned a tremendous following. At a reception given in

honor of her work, she was inundated with bouquets of flowers. Recalling her early years in politics, she commented, “They threw things at me then – and they were not roses.”

Shortly before her death, she was asked if she was happy about how her life had played out. She said yes, she would do it all over again. “The spirit is willing yet; I feel the same desire to do the work, but the flesh is weak. It’s too bad that our bodies wear out while our interests are just as strong as ever.”

Susan B. Anthony serves as an inspiration that one person can accomplish greatness through perseverance.

Upsala Junior High Student of the Month Hannah Luedtke has been chosen as the January Upsala Junior High Student of the Month.

She is the seventh grade, daughter of Lisa and Mark Luedtke. She has one sister, Hailie.

Hannah participates in Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, Drama Club, FFA, Student

Council, and Knowledge Bowl. Hannah’s favorite class is art because she likes to draw and create different things. She feels her most valuable school activity is Basketball because it teaches her to work with her team.

Hailie has been on the A Honor Roll and chosen as the 7th Grade Student Council President.

Outside of school she enjoys playing games, hunting, watching football, and being in plays.

After high school, Hannah plans to be an orthodontist. Her advice for her classmates is, “Work hard and you will achieve something.”

Nearly 100 parishioners attended the prayer vigil held in front of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose on Sunday, March 11 to commemorate the second anniversary of the fire that damaged the interior of the church. In spite of the cold March wind, the brief service, sponsored by Friends to Restore St. Mary’s, was intended to call parishioners’ attention to the possibility of restoring and preserving the church instead of demolishing and replacing it.

The prayer vigil consisted of the recitation of the Rosary in both English and Spanish, and several original prayers composed by members of the restoration group. Submitted by Jesse Lovelace.

A History Lesson for Our Times

By Debra Bellman Last Month my husband and I saw the exhibit “Testify” at the Minneapolis Central Library. This was a sampling of American slavery and Jim Crow artifacts collected by Alan and Diane Page. Our take-home: It is one thing to know about something, and quite another thing to see the hard evidence of it.

The slave collar sitting silently in a glass case leads one to think how it felt to wear one. But it was the branding iron that hit me even harder. My husband and I looked, and looked away, and looked back again, and then at each other. Meanwhile, a mother and son were clearly struggling with the fact of it. Yes, young people were there at the exhibit too, just as young people were there long ago, living out this truth.

Photographs of slaves showing some people with skin colors too light to have been created by a man and a woman from Africa, reminded me that it was common for free white males to rape enslaved black females.

A picture, perhaps meant for a parlor, or dining room wall, showed a row of six beautiful naked black babies. The caption read “Alligator Bait.” Was this supposed to be funny? The insistence that black lives matter, voiced loudly today, has a long history of needing to be said.

A large photograph of Frederick Douglas was easily recognizable, to me.

He had been a slave who somehow escaped and survived. He got himself educated, and he became a very well-known writer, public speaker, and a leader of the movement to abolish slavery. Abraham Lincoln invited him to the White House in order to seek his counsel, much to the chagrin of some white folks who thought black people belonged in the White House only as servants.

We saw pairs of signs. One sign read “Colored” and the other sign read “White.”

Why did people think these were needed?

And there was a sign appealing to “whites only” to vote and to sign up for the KKK. In 2015, at the age of 70, Alan Page retired as a Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. These days, he comes across as humble, which might be surprising, given his fame as a Minnesota Viking who helped bring the team to the 1970, ’74, ’75, and ’77 Super Bowls. In 1971, he became the first defense man to be named as the NFL’s Most Valuable Player.

Alan Page is black. His wife Diane Sims Page is white. They have two daughters and I don’t know how many grandchildren. The Pages are joggers. They make maple syrup, and love spending time at their cabin in northern Minnesota. One of Alan Page’s plans for his retirement is to write books for children. He does not seek the spotlight, but I did hear him recently on Minnesota Public Radio. As one of a panel of three who were discussing current issues, Mr. Page talked the least. But when he did speak, it was with a quiet thoughtfulness that I, for one, was hungry to hear.

-Norman Dear Norman, I’m not a big fan of check cashing companies.

They’re not nearly as bad as payday lenders, but it still seems kind of silly to me there’s even a market for this kind of thing. If you want a place to cash your checks and store your money, all you have to do is walk into a bank and open an account.

I realize there’s a small segment of the population that some people in financial circles like to call “the unbanked.” This means that, for whatever reason, they avoid banks. That’s their choice, but in the process, they leave themselves susceptible to bad deals.

As I said, I don’t feel the same way about check-cashing companies as I do about payday lenders. But it’s still not a financially smart move to regularly pay a storefront operation fees just to cash your checks.

Upsala Elementary Skating Olympics

For over 30 years, Upsala Elementary has provided an ice skating rink for area students and families. The brainchild of Upsala teacher, Ken Abrahamson, the rink has provided hours of skating fun for generations.

On Wednesday March 7, an Olympic awards ceremony was held complete with the National Anthem and gold, silver and bronze medals. The winners mounted an Olympic podium and proudly hailed their fellow students.

They were the winners of the annual ice skating races!

Students also honored Mr. Abrahamson, Mike Holmen, Annette Guthrie, Linda Chapman and Rev. Mark Chapman, who skated with kids. Holmen, and Mr. Abrahamson also kept the rink flooded and cleared during the winter months.

As this skating season melts to a close, Upsala appreciates this crew of volunteers and looks forward to another winter of skating.

He was troubled by the lack of concern for widows and children and asked, “God, if You created ears for people to hear, and eyes for people to see, why don’t You hear the cries and see the suffering of those whom You created?”

Do something God! So, has God, like us, become insensitive to the needs of people and the condition of the world? Does He not care about what is happening to His creation? Indeed He does.

“He will repay them and destroy them for their wickedness,” says the Psalmist. But until He does, we are responsible to bring His hope and healing to the suffering.

Hate Talking About Money with Your Spouse? Here Are 5 Steps to Make It Easier

For some, it’s in-laws. For others, it’s work-life balance. Or the kids. Or housework. And then there’s money.

When finances are mentioned, do you feel anxious and get that pit in your stomach?

If so, you’re not alone.

In late 2017, Ramsey Solutions conducted a study of more than 1,000 U.S. adults to learn how married couples communicate and relate about money.

The study found that money is the number one issue married couples fight about. In fact, money fights are the second leading cause of divorce, behind infidelity.

The good news is that money doesn’t have to be a source of friction in your marriage. In fact, money talks can actually bring you closer together instead of tearing you apart. I’ll show you how.

Tips for Improving Communication Around Money Before you start talking about specific money issues, like debt or budgeting, I want you and your spouse to take a step back and share your money stories with each other. You both come from different backgrounds that impact how you relate with money.

For example, my parents filed bankruptcy the year I was born, so debt was a four-letter word in our house growing up. My husband’s family didn’t have that same experience, so they saw finances differently. Our backgrounds have shaped how we think and feel about money, but knowing each other’s story has helped us to acknowledge our unique perspectives and find compromise as we move forward together. I promise, if you take the time to learn your spouse’s story, you will avoid a lot of miscommunication and unnecessary conflict.

Here are some more steps to improve your money conversations: Be fully present. That means turning off devices (phones, laptops, tablets, TV) and focusing on your spouse.

Pay attention to what they’re saying.

Don’t check out and make a to-do list or wonder how your favorite team is doing. And keep showing up every time you talk.

Listen to understand. Most of us listen so we can give an answer. When we do that, we miss important details that could change the conversation completely. Don’t jump in with your opinions and observations unless your spouse asks for them.

Ask questions. You can’t always trust your assumptions. Questions help you see the other person’s viewpoint more clearly, and they show that you’re actively participating in the discussion.

Questions also move the conversation to a deeper level.

Reflect on what you hear. Giving a reflective statement shows that you understand what your spouse is saying.

Start with, “What I hear you saying is . . . ” Then summarize what they said, including any emotions you’re hearing or seeing. When your spouse feels heard and understood, you grow closer together. And that’s the end goal, isn’t it?

Watch your non-verbal cues. How you say something is just as important as what you say. You’ve probably heard the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Well, the same applies to your eye contact, posture, facial expressions, tone of voice, and other non-verbal cues. You may say one thing, but your spouse may see another.

A marriage is about two people working as a team. And when you learn how to talk about money together, you’ll win as a team. Getting on the same page will unify the two of you in ways you may not have experienced before. You’ll talk about dollars and cents,

New Todd County Land Split Rules Starting January 1, 2018 all property line adjustments and administrative splits will require a signoff from the zoning authority prior to recording. This rule change was adopted by the Todd County Board of Commissioners by resolution in August 2017.

Property splits and property line adjustments without the benefit of review by the planning office can result in disappointment for the land owners involved. Planning your property line adjustment or land split carefully should result in legal parcels that will meet your needs and be buildable in the future.

Property line adjustments are used between adjoining and consenting landowners to solve a parcel access or property size issue. Line adjustments can be completed in AF1, AF2, R-2, and R-10 zoned land. A survey may or may not be required depending on the complexity of

the line adjustment. A land split differs from a line adjustment in that it involves creation of a new land parcel that did not exist previously.

Landowners or their agents will first obtain a split packet from the county or the county web site then proceed to pull together information required. Some splits will require a survey to adequately describe the land adjustment.

County planning staff are available to guide landowners through property splits they want to complete. It is important to discuss your plans with individuals familiar with the property splitting process. It will be important to follow the these steps to avoid spending money on expensive surveys and title opinions of your proposed split or property line adjustment.

Grey Eagle Township March 6, 2018 The meeting was rescheduled from March 5, 2018 due to snow.

Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited. Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the February 5, 2018 minutes to the board.

Mike made the motion to accept the minutes, Ray made the second.

Dennis Bacon was present to review the audit for 2017 with the Board members. Dennis stated the

records looked good and made a suggestion that the Board may need to transfer some monies from the General Fund to the Road and Bridge Fund if needed. Dennis and the Board members discussed levy recommendations for the upcoming annual Township meeting.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for February. Claims list included claims 3154-3161 for a total of $5,561.16.

Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried. Mail included advertising, trainings, and a donation request. Discussion was had on the sale of the old printer and possibly the laptop. Cannot be sold to a Board member and the Board would be responsible for cleaning all of the Township’s information off. Mike made a motion to accept the $20.00 offer, Ron made the second. Ray abstained. Clerk will check on costs to remove informa-

tion.

Discussion on monies needed for upcoming voter equipment updates. The Board felt it would not need to increase the levy to cover the costs.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray had a call about 116th st., snow being pushed over the culvert. Ray and Ron felt that Herdering could do a better job of snow removal on the tar roads. Started discussion on the shed behind the Townhall, it was decided to bring it up at the Annual meeting.

It’s tax season, everyone’s favorite! Along with tax season comes tax scam season. It happens every year and can occur at any time but it really ramps up this time of year. To some degree, we are all familiar with it.

An individual receives a call from a person claiming to represent the IRS. They may even go so far as to “spoof” the number so it shows up on caller ID as IRS or something similar. Once they make contact with you, they claim the person owes the IRS back taxes and fees and they must pay immediately. They try and convince the person to make payment by using some type of purchased gift card or other similar means. They also tell the person if they don’t pay immediately, the Police or Sheriff’s Office will arrest them on a warrant.

Discussing ag conservation as new federal farm bill is crafted

I was invited to represent Minnesota at a meeting in our nation’s capital last week where the topic centered on conservation efforts and the Mississippi River. I was one of four state legislators there with the National Caucus of State Legislators, and we met with an organization called the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative.

I gave input from the agricultural perspective into working together with other units of government to improve conservation efforts. We had discussion about the new farm bill currently being worked on

by Congress and what would happen to the program known as the Conservation Reserve Program. Currently capped at 24 million acres, the CRP has been popular with both sportsmen and farmers because it’s voluntary and because it provides wildlife habitat, in addition to its conservation value. As a possible change in the program, especially if the acreage cap is not increased, I suggested that large tracts of land not be eligible for CRP enrollment in the future. In some cases, these quarter- or half-sections of land have been accepted at rental rates above the “going rate” in their area. This results in less conservation value per acre and higher rental and land prices for surrounding farm land.

Ideally, there should be a separate pool of acres in a similar program known as Continuous CRP. This program works with smaller, more sensitive areas and provides a better conservation benefit for the dollar.

Areas such as lowlands along creeks and ditches or around other bodies of water are prime examples of where this program fits.

The current five-year farm bill expires in September. We were told that the House

is further along in its deliberation on new legislation than the Senate, and that a draft farm bill could be released as soon as this week by the House Ag Committee.

We also heard a report from a representative of the Department of Transportation. He explained President Trump’s infrastructure plan and how they hope to provide $50 billion in block grants for projects in rural parts of the United States.

However, as it currently stands, the federal match on these proposed projects would be only 20 percent. I asked if states could leverage their current transportation funding with this new federal money, and the answer was “no,” it must be new funding, which could include money from the private sector.

We were told that the state of Pennsylvania has sold rights to build bridges in its state to private companies, and within the past two years, over 350 bridge projects have been completed. Also during the discussion of raising additional funding for transportation projects, we were told that a section of freeway just outside of D.C. in Virginia has become a toll road. The cost to travel on this 7-mile stretch of freeway could range as high as $44.

Another initiative from the Trump administration that could provide quicker benefits to infrastructure projects is an effort to streamline the regulatory and permitting process. This would not reduce protections for the environment but would put one agency in charge of each project instead of having multiple agencies each taking their turn in the permitting process.

Such things as concurrent review to save time and dollars could be utilized, in addition to possibly removing veto authority from the EPA. The goal would be to reduce the time necessary to permit large construction projects down to two years.

MnDOT releases mowing, haying permit recommendations report The Minnesota Department of Transportation has released a report with recommendations regarding the agency’s mowing and haying permit process.

MnDOT developed the report, required by the 2017 Minnesota Legislature, with input from a stakeholder group of environmental, agricultural and other interests. In addition, MnDOT held nine listening sessions across the state during the past several months and took public comment via the website, email, regular mail and face-to-face.

The information from the public engagement shaped the recommendations that were made available March 1.

“MnDOT is charged with managing and maintaining the roadway right of way,” said MnDOT Commissioner Charlie Zelle.

“We worked closely with Minnesotans from across the state to ensure that we fully understood the wishes and needs of others and

how those things could be integrated with the state’s need to care for that land.”

The Legislature outlined specific elements for the recommendations, including: • Ease of permit application or notification • Frequency of permits or notification • Priority given to the owner or occupant of private land adjacent to a state highway right of way • Determination of authority to mow or hay state highway right of way in which adjacent land belongs to state or local government • Recognition of differences in the amount of wildlife habitat based on geographic distribution across the state The cover letter and the full report are available at www.mndot.gov/govrel/reports. html as well as on the mowing/haying webpage.
