ever going to be your customer. And I frequently use anecdotes to illustrate my points.

One of my favorites involves an animal, not a human customer.

Elephants never forget, or so they say. A man who had gone to the circus as a small boy made a return visit years later. He was sitting in a cheap seat when an elephant came along, reached up into the stand, wrapped his trunk gently about the man, and carried him over to deposit him gently in the best seat in the circus tent.

The man turned to his neighbor and said, “The elephant remembered that the last time I was here, years ago, I fed him peanuts.”

Just then the elephant came back, lifted his trunk, pointed it straight at the man and blew a stream of water in his face.

“Oh!” the man said. “I forgot I gave them to him in the bag.”

Elephants and customers both have long memories.

In that vein, I like to share this story of a local meat market that has three or four clerks waiting on customers. One of them always has a line of customers waiting for him – even if one of the other clerks is available. One day, a visitor

asked the always-busy clerk the reason for his popularity.

“The other clerks,” he said, “always put more meat on the scale and then take some away to arrive at what the customer ordered. I always put less on the scale and then add to it. It makes all the difference.”

Closer to home, my sister Margie shared an experience she had when flying with a veteran employee of Alaska Airlines. Not only do they have (in my opinion) the coolest graphics on their aircraft, they also have ranked highest in airline customer satisfaction among traditional carriers for 11 consecutive years (2008-2018) in the J.D. Power North America Airline Satisfaction Study. Their bragging rights include a long list of travel industry awards.

Margie’s seatmate explained that the airline “goes above and beyond to pick employees in all fields that can each be described as a ‘people person.’”

Their philosophy is that they can train someone to do their job, but they can’t train them to be a true people person unless they already are.

This attitude even extends to when employees are flying on their airline: they request a middle seat so their Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne 1930 Farm Kids In the 1930’s, farm life was very different from today. All of the family members, including the kids, had important duties which made the farm life successful. At that time, the farm did not exist to create wealth for the family, the primary purpose of the farm was to have it produce sufficient meat and vegetables for the family to survive. Dry years and the depression made farming a challenge. Money was scarce, since farm animals had almost no economic value. Crops were primarily fed to the farm animals, so there usually was very little production left to sell. The 1930’s farms usually had two forms of income, which were cream and eggs. Statements made by the 1930’s farm survivors usually referred to having lots of good food, but no money.

The farm girls of the 30”s learned how to become home-makers in their home. They learned to cook, fire up the cook stove, preserve meat and vegetables, sew, clean house, do dishes, carry water, pick and wash eggs, feed chickens, hoe the garden, and learn to make shirts and dresses from feed and flour sacks. Their was no electricity, so the skills they learned at home were those taught by her mother, who learned those skills from her mother. As a result, much of the menu resembled foods similar to those served in “the old country.” In later years, Home Economics classes were taught in high school, but are today considered so unimportant, they are no longer offered.

The boys from the farm came home to their duties, which included filling the wood box, feeding and watering the farm animals, milking cows by hand, removing manure, creating a warm bed for the animals, turning the corn sheller to make corn for the chickens, turning the cream separator and working in the fields. As a source of menu variety, the boys and sometimes the girls, hunted some of the local wildlife for eating alternatives. They were usually in an

she wrote herself. She even started a Facebook group for her riders that became an online community. One of the many messages said, “Thanks for the uplifting note today, and it was on green paper, my absolute favorite color. Thank you for taking time and brightening my day!”

area that had plenty of rabbits and pheasants to harvest. The corn shocks and fence-lines created adequate cover for them. Sometimes squirrels, rabbits and pheasants could be easily found eating under the corn crib. Of course they needed to be cleaned, which usually was the job of the successful hunter. My dad spoke of a time when they stopped harvesting rabbits, since they were dying of a disease, which caused boils under their skin.

I have always found it interesting to see pictures of 1930’s boys, since their pants were always sewed from a bib pattern. I thought that if they were belt-up pants, there would be enough pant material from 4 pair of pants to make another pair of belt-ups. The clothes sometimes didn’t actually fit correctly, since the family member who wore them last, had different physical dimensions. But if they still covered the body, some younger family member would be wearing them.

considered old enough to stop school and start working as an adult on the farm. In a few cases, these young people were not needed on the home farm, so they were hired to work on other farms.

The typical wage for farm employment was $20.00 per month, $2.00 kept by the worker and the rest sent home to supplement the home-farm income.

Whether they were hired out or worked at the home-farm, they were doing the work of an adult.

I’m not saying that kids today are usually less ambitious than the kids from the thirties, I believed that they complained about their duties too. Vernon A. “Vern” Botz Vernon A. “Vern” Botz, age 80 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, March 8, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, March 13 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Vernon Alexander Botz was born July 4, 1938 in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Herbert and Angeline (Beste) Botz. He attended country school and then Sauk Centre High School, graduating in 1956. Vern enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard where he was a cook. He was honorably discharged after his six years of service with a rank of Spc. 5.

He farmed the Botz Century Farm from 1956 through 1978. On October 2, 1962 he was united in marriage to Kathleen Dierkhising at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Vern was a cropland measurer for the Stearns County ASCS farm program, served as secretary of the Farmers Union Local Chapter in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, and was a part time Farmers Union Insurance Agent. He was a member of the Sauk Centre Racing Association Board and a pit crew member of Car #22 at the Stearns County Fairgrounds of the 1960’s and 1970’s and became a volunteer EMT for the Racing Association. Vern served as secretary of the Stearns County Fair from

1972 through 1977. In December of 1980, he became the graveyard cook at Trucker’s Inn until becoming Assistant Manager in October of 1990 through September of 2013.

Vern was a devoted and active lifetime member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. He taught Religious Education for five years and was an Extraordinary Communion Minister for twelve years.

Vern was one of the four men who started the Divine Mercy Devotion in Sauk Centre in 1982 and promoted the devotion until present. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and held most offices of the organization along with being a District Deputy and on the First-Degree Team. Vern was still active as a member of NODA (No One Dies Alone) program and the Divine Mercy Devotion.

Music was very important in Vern’s life. He was a guitar player of New Life Singers for thirty years, and also taught guitar lessons. Vern played at St. Michael’s Nursing Home and the Osakis Nursing home for the residents there. He played for weekend Masses at St. Paul’s Catholic Church and played for Koinonia Retreats, Television Masses, funerals, and weddings.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Kathy Botz of Sauk Centre; children, Vincent (Bernette) Botz of St. Cloud, Steven (Sharon) Botz of St. Cloud, Gregory Botz of Alexandria, Kenneth (Katherine) Botz of Rogers, Texas, Robert Botz of Sauk Centre, and Sandra (Gary) Felling of Elrosa; 11 grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Geisenhof of Long Prairie; and many loving relatives and friends.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Steven Geisenhof and Raymond “Ray” Dierkhising; and father-in-law, Tony Dierkhising.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Evonne L. Johnson, age 88 of Faribault, formerly of Grey Eagle, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at the District One Hospital in Faribault, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, March 15 at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle with Robert Kutter officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Grey Eagle.

Evonne Lucille Emerson was born June 20, 1930 in Ellington Township, West Concord, Minnesota. She graduated from West Concord High School and Augsburg College. She married Glen H. Johnson on June 19, 1954 and lived on the farm Glen purchased from his folks. Glen and Evonne moved to her parent’s farm in 1961. In

Steven G. Reber, age 53 of Albany, died unexpectedly after complications from a stroke on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, March 13 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Steven George Reber was born September 18, 1965 in Melrose, Minnesota to George and Carol (Hadrich) Reber. He graduated from Albany High School in 1985. Steve worked at the Opportunity Training Center for a couple of years prior to working at WACOSA for over 20 years. He cherished all his friendships

he made while working there. Steve enjoyed riding his Honda three and four-wheelers, especially riding them to visit the neighbors.

He loved his dogs, Farmall tractors, and was very fond of his nephews that were more like brothers to him.

Survivors include his father, George Reber of Albany; sister, Debi (Tom) Mullenmeister of Sartell; nephews, Braxton Luzier of Normal, Illinois, Brant Luzier of Liberty Lake, Washington, and Brock (Molly) Luzier of Sartell; aunts and uncles, George J. (Sharon) Hadrich, Jr. of Avon, Corrine Hadrich of Avon, Sharlene (David) Walberg of Avon, Gary (Dorothy) Hadrich of Avon, Lois (Ron) Schroden of St. Joseph, Linda (Ed) Merkling of St. Joseph, Jean Vandereyk of Luxemburg, and Lois Reber of Albany; and many loving relatives and friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Reber on June 19, 2012; and uncles, Dale and Harvey Hadrich.

She served in various positions and activities at Hegre Lutheran Church. She was Executive Secretary of the Dodge County United Way; taught school in Upsala, Milaca, and West Concord; worked for CO Brown Insurance Agency and Manpower as lead in the Office Systems Center at IBM. She was a member of the Upsala American Legion Auxiliary.

Evonne is survived by her children, Lonnie (Jan) Johnson and their children, Noel, Callie and Scott; Robbie (Mary) Johnson and their children, Rose and Andrew; and LuAnn Johnson; brother, Myron (Rosalie) Emerson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by her husband, Glen Johnson on January 15, 2006; parents, James Victor Emerson and Charlotte (McAlister) Emerson; sister, Mary Joan Floren; and brothers, Victor Junior Emerson and Edgar Emerson.

Rose C. Funk

Rose C. Funk, age 87 of New Munich, died Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, March 14 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Rose Cecelia Lauer was born July 27, 1931 in Roscoe, Minnesota to Leo and Mary (Kalthoff) Lauer. On July 16, 1955 she was united in marriage to George Funk at Assumption Catholic Church in Eden Valley, Minnesota. The couple farmed near New Munich until 1989 when they moved into town. Rose worked at the Melrose Hospital in the Dietary Department. Later, she volunteered with the foster grandparent program at Sacred Heart School in Freeport which brought her much happiness.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich where she sang in the choir for many years.

She was also a member of Saint Anne’s Christian Women. Rose enjoyed gardening, reading (she was known for being a great speller), bowling, playing cards, staying active with walking, and enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and the New Munich amateur baseball team.

Survivors include her children, David

(Carol) Funk of St. Cloud, Bernadette Forster of Albany, James (Catharine) Funk of Cross Lake, Diane (Tim) Vadnais of Clearwater, Kevin (Pam) Funk of St. Joseph, Karen (Alan) Schuch of Marshall, and Jane (Gerald) Noble of West Fargo, North Dakota; 22 grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren; brother, Lawrence (Mary) Lauer of Andover; sisters, Sister Julianna Lauer, O.S.B. of St. Cloud and Clara Neis (John Ruiz) of Blaine; and brother-in-law, Greg Ehresmann of Belle Plaine.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband, George Funk on January 6, 2019; infant children, John Funk and Ruth Funk; parents; brothers, Andrew, Arnold, and John Lauer; sisters, Mathilda Lauer, Veronica Solinger, Frances Watkins, and Marie Ehresmann; and son-in-law, Roman Forster.

Serving as casket bearers will be Jared Funk, Aaron Forster, Luke Funk, Ryan Vadnais, Brandon Funk, and Benjamin Schuch. Cross bearer will be Amanda Good and scripture bearer will be Justin Funk.

Lectors will be David Funk, James Funk, and Kevin Funk and the gift bearers will be Rachelle Vadnais, Vince Noble, and Jenna Vadnais.

Irene A. Pohlmann, age 89 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

Saturday, March 16 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Irene Agnes Koopmeiners was born April 7, 1929 in St. Francis, Minnesota to Herman and Florence (Pohlmann) Koopmeiners. She attended country school graduating in 1943 and then achieving her GED in 1986. Irene married Francis “Lawrence” Pohlmann on July 6, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple farmed together and raised a family of 12. After moving into town she volunteered as a Sacristan at St. Mary’s and visited many sick and homebound parishoners. Irene was also the secretary for

the VFW for many years.

Irene was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, the Christian Mothers, and Catholic United Financial.

She enjoyed bowling, playing cards with her family and friends, traveling, gardening, canning, and sewing.

Survivors include her children, Kathy (Dave) Welle of Freeport, Fred Pohlmann of Willmar, Dan (Ruth) Pohlmann of Sauk Centre, Patty Ahrens of Long Prairie, Rita (Jim) Geehan of Ham Lake, Eileen (Butch) Schneider of Cold Spring, Henry (Mary) Pohlmann of Melrose, Teresa (Bill) LeClaire of St. Cloud, Carla (Dave Anderson) Hinnenkamp of St. Cloud; sonin-law, Mark Vener; 26 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Mary Jane Austing, Florentine Roering, Jerry Koopmeiners, Carol Klaphake, and JoAnn Zenzen.

Abby has been on the A Honor Roll since seventh grade and accomplished a personal achievement of becoming a better setter in volleyball. Abby’s favorite thing about school is that it gives her more knowledge and helps her prepare for the future.

Abby would advise other students to “love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.”

Abby volunteers at the library in the summer, sings in the choir and attends religion at St. John the Baptist Church, and works at Red’s Irish Pub. She enjoys visiting relatives, working on puzzles, fishing, babysitting, listening to music, playing sports, and learning new skills.

Social Studies teacher Pam Czech said “Abby exhibits a positive outlook and attitude in the classroom. Her enthusiasm for classroom activities is a welcomed sight. Abby conducts herself with maturity and shows respect for teachers and peers. Helping others and being kind are just a few of the many positive traits that Abby possesses. Scott under went a kidney transplant due to polycystic kidneys in 2012. Since surgery he has dealt with several complex medical conditions requiring follow-ups at the Mayo Clinic.

He under went open heart surgery and more recently has been diagnosed with a degenerative spinal condition.

His wife Jane Keppers (Sundermann) and children Jason, Eric, Kyle, and Holly have been caring for Scott who is bed bound in their home.

Scott is a former Rotochopper employee and a friend to many.

The money raised will be used to pay for continuing medical expenses.

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce that Grace Schultz has been selected as the February Senior High Student of the Month. Grace, a senior, is the daughter of Charlie and Jill Schultz. She plans to attend Minnesota State University in Moorhead for Special Education.

Grace has been active throughout her high school years participating in basketball, volleyball, softball and theatre every year since seventh grade; representing her class on the student council and playing in the band for five years; and participating in track in ninth grade.

Math instructor and Student Council advisor Liza Hasse said “Grace has proven to be a well organized and hardworking student. She strives to always do her best and puts forth whatever time is necessary to do just that. Grace is kind and

courteous towards others and works hard to include everyone. She will go out of her way to make someone’s day better. I have come to appreciate her sense of humor and will greatly miss her next year.

She will be successful in college, and I wish her the best as she moves forward with her education.”

English teacher Chantelle Frie added “Grace Schultz is a wonderful addition to any classroom, play cast, and Student Council. Grace is responsible, helpful, and willing to talk to or work with everyone. Grace brings a bit of comedic relief to difficult situations and is not afraid to laugh at herself. She treats everyone with respect, is ready for any challenge, and gives 100% to every task.”

Grace, a Triple A Award winner, enjoyed being able to take college classes in high school to save time and money in the future. She advises other students that “Sleep is temporary; GPA is forever.”

Outside of school, Grace has shown sheep with 4 H, helped out with blood drives, and taught at the Lutheran Vacation Bible School. Grace enjoys deer hunting, going to bonfires with friends, and traveling.

Dairy Producer Night Out to be held March 28 University of Minnesota Extension and Minnesota Dairy Initiatives will host a Dairy Producer Night out on Thursday, March 28. The purpose of the Dairy Producer Night Out is to bring local dairy producers together for an evening of networking, education, and fun. It will be held from 7:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at the Thunder Lodge Sports Bar & Supper Club, located at 22056 US 71, Long Prairie. The Dairy Producer Night Out is offered free of charge and vouchers will be given to attendees to help cover the cost of food.

This event will include a short presentation on calf scours and health from Dr. Steve Baldwin of Freeport Veterinary Service. Dr. Baldwin will discuss the symptoms, prevention, and treatment of scours, as well as, overall calf health.

Barn Fire: March 13, 2019: At approximately 4:17 a.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received multiple calls about a barn on fire and fully engulfed.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Holdingford Fire and Gold Cross Ambulance were dispatched to 41828 County Road 3 which is a few miles east of the City of Holdingford. St. Stephen Fire assisted with mutual aid at the scene.

According to Sheriff Steve Soyka, property owner, Steven Alan Rosty, was unaware his barn was on fire and stated only cattle and vehicles were stored in the barn. Rosty advised the cattle were able to exit the barn on their own.

The barn was a complete loss along with a skid steer and snowmobiles.

The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.

In Psalm 78:19 our writer makes an interesting statement: “They spoke against God” because they questioned His ability when the Israelites were walking in the wilderness and had no food. They even asked, “Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?” They questioned God’s ability to do something when they saw nothing. But God can do anything with nothing. Perhaps they forgot about Creation: “In the beginning God created” everything - and He did it from nothing. Nothing!

God has unlimited resources and might that exceed anything we can imagine. And we must not forget His unlimited love! So, when we add His resources to His might and mix in His love then add His wisdom with the plan He has laid out for each of us, it is not “CAN GOD” - it is GOD CAN! Our God is a CAN DO GOD!

Dear Motor Medics, I’m about ready to start hauling my trailer for the season and will be using more than one vehicle. What kind of things should I be thinking about before heading out with a trailer?

-Mike in Decorah, Iowa Dear Mike, I’m glad that you’re thinking ahead.

Too many people just assume the vehicle they have is ready just because it has a hitch on the back. The first place to start is to make sure what you are pulling can safely be towed without overloading your vehicle, once that is done a safety inspection is in order. All of the items that the vehicle needs to operate such as steering, brakes, cooling, etc. will now be done for two so if it can’t handle itself how will it handle towing? Have the vehicle raised on a hoist to check the suspension and brakes, replace worn parts for safety. Check the tires and make sure they are properly inflated and not cracked. Also check their load rating. Check the condition of the hitch and light wiring and inspect your engine and transmission cooling systems. Dirt and debris should be rinsed away from the cores with low pressure water. If you do not have a transmission cooler ask your mechanic about one, it may save you from having a transmission replaced prematurely. Don’t forget to check the trailer for safety as well. Be sure to ask your mechanic about further towing preparations.

D o n a l d Terwey, 40, of Long Prairie, passed away on March 7, 2019.

James Geertsema, 86, of Avon passed away on Friday, March 8, 2019 at the County Manor Nursing Home in Sartell.

He was born on September 17, 1932 in Elk Township near Rushmore, MN to Klaas and Ida (Schuur) Geertsema who where both from Holland. James attended a country school near Rushmore to 8th grade and was the youngest of 13 children. He married Lily Mildred Grussing. The couple lived near Worthington until their divorce in 1994.

James operated a milk hauling business until the creamery closed in Jackson, MN

Deborah (Lehrke) Terwey. After high school, he worked various jobs; recently at Custom Transport in Long Prairie. Donald was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed snowmobiling, bonfires, camping and especially fishing. He also enjoyed playing cards and loved cars. Donald was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Donald is survived by his dad Michael (Sue) Terwey of Long Prairie, mom Deborah Terwey of Long Prairie; siblings: Mike (Melissa) Terwey of Long Prairie, Dean (Heather Tesch) of Round Prairie, Christina (James) Stuart of Salol, Chris Klinkhammer of St. Cloud; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

and later worked at the Campbell Soup Company in Worthington as a maintenance person until his retirement in 1987. He later moved to Avon, MN in 1994 near Two Rivers Lake. He enjoyed gardening and fishing and served in the Army from 1953-1955.

Survivors include his sons, Michael of Blaine, Glenn (Kyougsuk “Sukie”) of Rosamound, CA, Larry (Britan) of St. Cloud and Steven (Jennie) of Worthington; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and 12 siblings.

It all becomes “ours,” and you can adjust your money situation to reflect your marriage and your financial makeover as a couple.

Make sure that “we” have an emergency fund of at least $1,000 in the bank at that point. Then, if you’re both in agreement on the issue, you can throw the rest of what you previously had in your emergency fund at the debt. Both of you can also pile up cash between now and the big day, so that when you’re “official” you’ll have even more cash on hand.

Dear Dave, My husband and I are 24, we’re debt-free, and we’re just a few weeks of saving away from having a fullyfunded emergency fund. Each of us has a 401(k) plan at work, and right now we’re concentrating on life insurance purchases. You always recommend term insurance, but how long should the coverage last?

-Jenny Dear Jenny, Congratulations on being super smart with your money! It sounds like you two are starting out on the right foot.

Generally, I recommend 15- or 20year level term policies—unless you have children. Since you didn’t mention any kids, I can only assume they’re not in the picture at this point. However, if you two decide to grow your family in the future, I’d advise converting those to 30-year term policies. You’ll want the insurance there to protect everyone in the family, until the kids are grown and out on their own. In the years after, continued saving and wealth building will lead you to a point where you’re both self-insured.

You two have done an excellent job with your finances. Keep up the good work!

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Confess and Believe; Romans 10:8-13 Romans 10:9 reads, “... , because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” When it comes to matters of faith and salvation the devil can be as deceptive with us as he was with Eve and the fruit, “did God really say?”

For this reason pastors and teachers of Christian faith emphasize and reinforce the fact all sin can be forgiven. Salvation cannot be earned but it is given to anyone who confesses that Jesus is Lord and believes that God raised him from the dead. So for those doubting their salvation there are ways to dispel the doubt by looking for the work God does in lives.

That is what confession and faith is. It is a work of God in our hearts and minds that can be seen and experienced.

One is external the other is internal.

You might notice that these two phrases are connected with an “and” instead of an “or”. This means both are given.

In an age that has emphasized internal and private faith over and above corporate confession the “and” is important for it ties the visible and external manifestation of confession to the internal and invisible faith a person holds.

As a simple pastor I am unable to see what a person believes regarding Jesus so we tend to look more at the external confession of faith. Hypocrites are everywhere including those who confess and don’t believe and those who believe but don’t confess. Scripture and even Jesus has a way of keeping them both together. James 2:18 says it well also, “Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”

This Lenten season I would like to encourage everyone who believes in their heart that God raised Jesus

from the dead to work on confessing him with your mouth. We believe in the resurrection because of the hope of everlasting life it gives to us. I would hate for people who believe rightly in their heart to die and face our Lord only to be denied eternal life because they failed to confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord. For even Jesus said in Matthew 10:32, “So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,” The implication is that if you don’t confess him before men he won’t confess you before the Father.

Traditional and biblically confessional churches like St. John’s are not always comfortable proclaiming the hope of salvation over someone who has passed away who has failed to publicly confess Jesus as their Lord in recent years. For what we can see is the external evidence of faith not the heart.

If you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead why would you not be confessing to others especially fellow believers in worship that he is Lord. Know for certain that if you “confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” No past sins stand in your way and all are welcome into the body of Christ who confess and believe in Jesus. It is that simple. Amen.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Fully renewable energy push draws dependability concerns

After seeing a proposal for 100-percent renewable energy production from the federal level of government, Gov. Tim Walz last week released his own plan to make Minnesota totally reliant on carbon-free electricity in the next 30 years. What has many local folks skeptical of that idea is data from our recent polar vortex showing wind production actually stopping during the coldest days, and many solar panels around the state covered, or nearly so, with snow. Not the best way to assure residents that renewable electricity can be relied on to provide dependable electric power.

What’s also concerning about this plan is that it doesn’t make clear what the role of nuclear power would be. Certainly there needs to be baseload generation, as we’ve all heard about the scenario when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining. If we are eventually going away from coal production and natural gas peaking plants, I’d feel a lot better is there was still a reliable way to produce power when the aforementioned conditions persist, like at night or when it’s a calm day.

Legislation to move us in the direction of carbon-free electric generation will be heard this week in the Senate.

Also of interest this week is the scheduled released Wednesday of the Legislative Auditor report on alleged abuse in the CCAP program. CCAP is the state-subsidized child care program that has been in the news for possible misuse of state dollars. Investigations have been ongoing, but little has been released so far in terms of evidence or potential fraud. It’s rumored that large sums of money, upwards of $100 million, may have been diverted from the program.

A series of bills dealing with Chronic Wasting Disease was heard last week in the Environment Policy Committee.

CWD is a fatal disease that affects deer and elk. There is no live-animal test for it, so the only testing currently done is on dead animals. Deer hunters are concerned about the spread of CWD and the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association has come up with a series of changes they support in how the state handles the disease.

At issue is the 400 Cervidae farms in Minnesota that raise deer or elk in captivity. These farms are currently regulated by the Board of Animal Health. The deer hunters group would like to change that and have the DNR take over enforcement responsibilities. They also support the mandatory elimination of all animals on any deer farm when one animal on the farm tests positive for CWD. There are also more strict fencing requirements they support on deer farms, including double fencing that’s 10 feet high.

would put them out of business as the cost is prohibitive. They were also concerned about a possible moratorium on new deer farms and the banning of captive deer and fluids from being transported in and out of state.

This is a serious problem that so far has largely been confined to the southeast part of the state, although a case was recently reported in central Minnesota.

There needs to be a test developed that can determine if live animals have the disease. Legislation has been introduced that would provide funding to the University of Minnesota to develop such a test. There was also discussion of breeding animals that were resistant to the disease, and that such work could be done more easily on deer farms.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

March 9, 2019: At approximately 3:54 pm, their office received a report of a snowmobile vs. vehicle accident near the intersection of Abaca Road and 20th Avenue, approximately two miles west of Upsala, in Elmdale Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 14-year-old Travis Kerfeld of Melrose, MN was driving a snowmobile on the trail, traveling west, crossing over 20th Avenue. 55-year-old Leif Johnson of Burtrum, MN was traveling south on 20th Avenue. Kerfeld failed to yield and was struck by the vehicle on the roadway. Kerfeld was transported to St. Cloud Hospital

by Gold Cross Ambulance with a possible leg injury.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Upsala First Response Team and Gold Cross Ambulance.

Whether you’re a planner or a procrastinator, this article will help you decide if you should use a tax professional or file your taxes yourself. Don’t worry, I’m going to make this easy for you!

Do you need a tax professional?

You’ve heard me talk about the importance of getting professional help to build and protect your wealth. Now, I’m not just talking about working with a financial advisor. That’s one person you need on your side, but they’re not the only person. Another person you need to meet with is a tax professional.

People will ask me, “Hogan, how do I know if I need to work with a tax professional?” I get it. You want to save money where you can. There are some situations where you can probably file by yourself. For instance, if you’re a single filer with no dependents to claim and don’t want to itemize any deductions, you’re probably okay to file your taxes on your own.

Now, even if you could file on your own, you need to decide if you want to. Is it the best use of your time? Do you like crunching numbers? If not, you might want to use a tax pro to save your-

You need a tax pro if…

In some circumstances, you absolutely need to work with a tax pro. Do any of these apply to you?

You bought or sold property in the last year You own a business You do a large amount of freelance work You have a lot of investments You experienced major life changes (marriage, birth of a child, divorce) in the last year You have multiple jobs You give charitable donations You intend to itemize expenses You wonder how the new Tax Bill affects you If you’re still not sure, I would encourage you to work with a tax pro.

When it comes to the IRS, it’s better to play it safe now than regret something later!

Don’t believe the myths you’ve heard Some people may think they’ll be better off using software than working with a tax pro. That’s likely because they’ve bought into one or more of the tax myths out there. Maybe you’re familiar with these myths, or even believed them yourself.

Myth #1: A tax pro costs too much money The cost of working with a professional to file your taxes can vary widely, depending on how complex your finances are. On average, fees range from $176 to $457. The higher costs are for those who have extra forms, like if you have rental property or state income taxes.

Before you decide to file on your own, listen up: A recent survey of 2,000 Dave Ramsey Facebook fans found that people who worked with a tax expert got an average of $791 more in their refunds than those who self-filed.

How to Stay Motivated in 2019 By Christy Wright Did you know that by the middle of February, 80 percent of people give up on their New Year’s resolutions? As a certified business coach and best-selling author, I’ve worked with thousands of women who struggle to stay motivated past the January high—especially when things get hard.

I love what Zig Ziglar says about this: “People say motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing. That’s why we recommend it daily.” It’s so true. We can’t expect to stay fueled for 12 months from the excitement of a new year. Instead, we need to be intentional about creating small habits that can fuel the flame in us throughout the year.

If you’re struggling to stay motivated this year, here are three things you can do this week to get back on track: Remind Yourself of Your Why When I coach women, the first thing I do is encourage them to define their why. Your why is the very specific reason for doing what you’re doing and what you want to accomplish as a result.

If you want to start a side business, for example, your why might be that you want to stay home with your newborn while still bringing in an income, and eventually turn it into a full-time job.

When you remind yourself of why you set that goal in the first place, it resets your focus and gives you the boost you need to get back to work.

Myth #2: If I use tax software, my results will be 100% accurate I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen my computer software do some wacky things. Call it user error if you want, but computers and software aren’t perfect. No, a human tax pro isn’t perfect, either. But the good ones will back up their work with some kind of guarantee. And, you can ask a tax pro questions that are specific to your situation.

Try doing that with software.

Myth #3: It will be faster to do it myself The American Action Forum estimates that taxpayers spend an average of 17 hours doing paperwork and preparing to file their taxes. Seriously, you need to ask yourself if filing your own taxes is worth the time and effort. Yes, you’ll still need to gather receipts and other paperwork if you meet with a tax pro. But if you keep up with that paperwork during the year, it shouldn’t take that much time to get things in order.

Make One Small Change Sometimes, all it takes to multiply your productivity, which improves your motivation, is to make one small change to your environment or method of work.

That could mean decluttering your workspace or moving to a completely new environment, like a coffee shop, to get better focus.

Or maybe you need to introduce something new into your daily routine.

When I started listening to podcasts instead of music while getting ready for work, I multiplied my time by combining two things I wanted to do: investing in my mind while putting on my makeup. The inspiring content is always a motivating way to start my day.

Find a Cheerleader There’s nothing like encouragement from someone who cares about you to fire you back up. Grab a friend who could also use some accountability, and commit to being one another’s cheerleader. Not only will you serve as their hype person when they need a pep talk, but when you’re encouraging them it will energize you as well.

The bottom line is this: Staying motivated in 2019 requires you to make a commitment. We’re all wired differently, so you have to choose what works best for you and then be intentional about injecting those things into each week. You won’t achieve your goals by sitting still. And over time, motivation will go from being a once-a-year thing to being as natural as breathing—or as Zig Ziglar reminds us, as often as bathing!

Kresha authors bill to fund student safety efforts State Rep. Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, has authored a bill which provides additional grant funding and resources to improve safety for students and staff at Minnesota’s schools.

Kresha’s bill (H.F. 579) provides an additional $18 per pupil for school districts, and $18 per pupil in new funding for charter schools. The bill also provides $7.50 per pupil for school district cooperatives in Greater Minnesota.

“We owe it to our children to ensure our schools provide a safe environment in which they can learn and grow,” Kresha said. “The bill I have authored is multi-faceted to help us make improvements in a wide range of areas, from enhancing security at school buildings to expanding suicide-prevention efforts.

Some components in Kresha’s bill are similar to measures the Legislature approved in an education package last year, only to be vetoed by then-Gov. Mark Dayton. For example, the bill provides school districts with the flexibility to use facilities maintenance revenue for physical security upgrades, and communications.

Safe Schools Revenue is $43 million for the 2020-21 biennium, plus $2 million for physical security audit grants, $400,000 for school resource officer training grants, and $273,000 for suicide prevention teacher training.
