Decide, commit, succeed -By Harvey Mackay President D w i g h t Eisenhower was raised on a Kansas farm, and he never forgot its lessons.

In response to a difficult question put to him at the National Press Club, Eisenhower said it reminded him of an incident in his boyhood.

“An old farmer had a cow that we wanted to buy,” Eisenhower recalled, “so we went to visit him and asked about the cow’s pedigree.

“The old farmer didn’t know what the word pedigree meant so we asked him about the cow’s butterfat production. His answer was that he didn’t have the foggiest idea.

Finally we asked him if he knew how many pounds of milk the cow produced each year.

“The farmer shook his head and said, ‘I don’t know. But she’s an honest cow, and she’ll give you all the milk she has!’

“Well,” Ike concluded, “I’m like that cow. I’ll give you everything I have.”

President Eisenhower didn’t just want to get by. He was committed to do his best.

You can see when people are committed to a project or cause; they refuse to settle for anything less than their best. They are willing to learn and work hard.

Commitment must start from the inside out.

Commitment means staying loyal to what you said you were going to do, long after the mood you said it in has left you.

“Commitment unlocks the doors of imagination, allows vision and gives us the right stuff to turn our dreams into reality,” said James Womack, founder and chairman of the Lean Enterprise Institute.

Some might be tempted to back off those dreams when the going gets tough – which it often does. But being truly committed provides the motivation to persevere, another word that is important in seeing projects and dreams through to the finish.

Commitment is a prerequisite to success. Commitment is the state of being bound – emotionally, intellectually, or both – to a course of action. Commitment starts with a choice and is sustained by dedication and perseverance. Actions speak louder than words.

“There’s a difference between interest and commitment,” said Ken Blanchard.

“When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.”

Lou Holtz, the Hall-of-Fame college football coach, believes there are four things any person or organization needs to be successful.

“First,” he says, “you have to make a commitment to excellence. Second is complete attention to detail. The third thing is to have sound fundamentals, and the fourth requirement is discipline.”

Lou says: “Have you ever seen a team run on the field yelling, ‘We want to be number two?’ Everyone wants to be number one. Those who actually achieve it are those who are willing to put the blood, sweat and tears into their effort.”

I will add another essential element of commitment: confidence in your ability to succeed. Ask any successful entrepreneur how often they questioned their judgment, their sanity. I’d wager that any who were truly committed had some moments of

uncertainty. But they believed in their potential. As I’ve preached so many times, it’s important to believe in yourself, even when no one else does.

I’m not sure how people can be totally satisfied with themselves if they are not committed to doing their very best. Sure, there are going to be failures, but that’s no excuse for not trying your hardest. You can’t hold back because of fear of failure.

I firmly believe that all human success is the result of persistent commitment. Not luck, not just being in the right place at the right time. Commitment is a decision that is easier to make than to see through.

Commitment is what keeps you forging ahead once the initial glow has faded.

We’ll go back to the barnyard for some perspective. A chicken and a pig were talking about commitment.

The chicken said, “I’m committed to giving eggs every morning.”

The pig said, “Giving eggs isn’t commitment, it’s participation. Giving ham is total commitment.”

Mackay’s Moral: Motivation is what gets you started. Commitment is what keeps you going.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cisterns

Grandmother’s water tank was oblong with wood and tar paper on top too, as Pa would say, “you gotta have it covered to keep out the bird poop.” It was drained as winter approached. The problem with Ma’s tank was that mosquitoes laid their eggs in her cistern, causing many immature hatched mosquito to be swimming in the water.

Pa would put a little bit of kerosene in the water, which killed the unwanted pests.

This solution worked, except that Ma would rather sternly complain in German that now her wash water would now stink from kerosene. No big deal, it happened every summer.

The cisterns that were located somewhere that didn’t freeze could have enough water to last the winter. Again, this helped reduce carrying pails of water from the well house across the slippery farmyard.

In our house there was a hand pump located next to the hand-washing sink in the kitchen. It made sense to call it the cistern pump. We used this water to wash hands, clothes, some dishes, garden produce and Saturday night baths from this pump. It was actually like having running water in the house.

A friend said their reservoir was the pond below the house. It was used as the water from our cistern pump, but it required carrying the pails up a hill to the house.

There were several kids in that family and their dad said they had running water, since if it was needed, the kids went running for it.

I’m sure that many of you can remember a cistern at your home. For those who have never experienced using a cistern, it was a way to store water during a time of plenty to be used during a time when water was less available.

The water was also used for specific uses such as washing clothes and bathing.

These water reservoirs came in many shapes and sizes. Mother Nature uses sloughs, pot holes, lakes and oceans as reservoirs for water storage. Human beings work on a more limited scale. Their water collection abilities are quite limited when compared to Mother Nature.

The water stored in the cisterns usually was collected as runoff from a slanted roof.

Gutters, downspouts and pipes directed the collected water into storage. At a time when water was hand pumped and hand carried in all kinds of weather, having a near-by water source was appreciated These cisterns were sometimes located under the home in a concrete room made specifically for water storage. In other cases a larger stock tank was used. My

neighborhood when I was a kid, carried all of his water, including drinking water from his pond in the field near his house. He also used that water to brew wine from overripe fruits he had collected from the grocery stores that were about 8 miles from his home. He walked to town almost every day and lived into his eighty’s. It was said that his baths were actually a seasonal occurrence. Maybe drinking from the slough is a recipe for a long life. Or was it because he was single???

Shirley M. Schirmers

Shirley M. Schirmers, age 78 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, March 11 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre.

Shirley Marie Boogaard was born November 4, 1942 in Perham, Minnesota to John and Rosella (Rutten) Boogaard.

Shirley lived in Butler until 1953 when her family moved to Osakis. She was united in marriage to Denis Schirmers on June 2, 1964 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis, Minnesota. The couple lived and farmed southwest of Sauk Centre. Shirley was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic

John J. “Johnny” Mehr

John J. “Johnny” Mehr, age 84 of Greenwald, died peacefully on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at his home near Greenwald.

A private family Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 11 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

John Joseph Mehr was born October 14, 1936 in St. Francis, Minnesota to Peter and Frances (Schmidt) Mehr. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1955. John served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1960; honorably discharged on October 28, 1960.

He worked 36 years at a chemical plant in St. Paul; retiring in 1997. John was united in marriage to Rita Wenker on October 3, 2004 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald.

He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Greenwald Lions Club, American Legion Post 101, and was a past

Church in Sauk Centre and the Christian Women, which she joined in 1966. She loved to travel and loved her grandchildren. Her “sewing ladies” were her very dear friends.

Survivors include her husband, Denis Schirmers of Sauk Centre; children, Michele “Shelly” Schirmers of Eden Prairie, Kevin Schirmers of Sauk Centre, Heidi (Brian) Dueker of Sauk Centre, Timothy “Tim” (Jody) Schirmers of Sauk Centre, David “Dave” (Melissa) Schirmers of Sauk Centre, and Benjamin “Ben” Schirmers of Sauk Centre; ten grandchildren, Spencer (Nicole), Kayley, Ryan, Paige, Casey, Miah, Nathan, Stella, Kalli, and Sylvie; brothers and sisters, Bernice (Donnie) Messer of Sauk Centre, Jeanine Wolbeck of Sauk Centre, Gerald Boogaard of Minneapolis, Duane (Kay) Boogaard of Osakis, Linda Kress (significant other, Tom) of Winder, Georgia, and Lenny (Kimra) Boogaard of Osakis.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and infant son, Joseph Kevin Schirmers on April 19, 1966.

Serving as casket bearers will be Shirley’s granddaughters, Paige Schirmers, Miah Schirmers, Stella Schirmers, Sylvie Schirmers, Kayley Schirmers, Nicole Sundberg, and Kalli Schirmers. Cross bearer will be Ryan Schirmers and scripture bearer will be Nathan Schirmers. Readers will be Spencer Sundberg and Emma George.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Frances Mehr; and brother, Bernard Mehr.

Elsie K. Anderson

Elsie K. Anderson, age 95 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Friday, March 5, 2021 at the Getty Street Assisted Living in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A private graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle with Rev. Marty Porter

officiating.

Elsie Katherine Eschenbacher was born January 15, 1926 in Brainerd, Minnesota to Walter and Martha (Luttman) Eschenbacher.

She graduated from Brainerd High School and was a telephone operator. Elsie met Glen Anderson in Brainerd and was united in marriage on November 30, 1946. The couple moved to Upsala and together owned and

operated Anderson’s Dry Goods for 18 years.

In 1975 they moved to Big Birch Lake. Elsie was employed as a dietic cook for the Melrose Hospital for 18 years. She retired in 1990 and moved to Sauk Centre.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre and the Ladies Aid. Elsie loved to quilt, play cards, and spend time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Joyce (Jerry) Sabrowky of Sauk Centre and JoAnn (Bob) Wilson of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Carl Eschenbacher of Baxter and Larry Eschenbacher of Ardmore, Oklahoma.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Anderson on June 26, 1982; parents; son, Glen A. Anderson; daughterin-law, Shirley Anderson; sister, Jeanette Simmonds; and brother, Don Eschenbacher.

Memorials are preferred.

Ronald A. Krupa

in 1970. He worked for Marthaler Heating and Plumbing and for Trisco Plumbing and Heating. Ronald worked at Kraft foods for 29 years and has lived in Sauk Centre for 51 years.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre and the Paul F. Donart V.F.W Post 2853. Ronald enjoyed camping, taking casino trips, shaking dice, riding scooter, and loved spending time with his friends and family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Margaret Krupa of Sauk Centre; children, Brenda (Scott) Cheadle of Sauk Centre, Mike (Becky) Krupa of Sauk Centre, and Patty (Allan) Tate of Sauk Centre; seven grandchildren, Connor Krupa, Kelsey Houg, Megan Haase-Vanderwal, Ryan Krupa, Katelynn Cheadle, Alexis Tate, and Alexander Tate; six great-grandchildren, Kadince Holmquist, Ayden Haase, Jaxen Haase, Aubrey Houg, Trinity Schindler, and Mackenzie Schindler; and brother, Myron Krupa of Willmar.

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Geraldine Euteneuer, Raymond Krupa, Carol Ann Krupa, and Jack Krupa.

Alvin J. VanHeel

from farming. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling, riding his ATV, playing cards, and bowling. He and Frances loved spending the winter months in Texas, which they did for many years. His family was most important to him and he cherished the time he spent with them. Alvin was an active member on the township board, director of MidAm Board, American Legion member, and served on the St. John the Baptist Parish Council. He also volunteered at the Swanville Senior Center, ushered at St. John’s Catholic Church, and drove veterans to appointments. Alvin was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Alvin is survived by loving wife, Frances Van Heel; children, Ronald (Jayne) Van Heel, Diane (Tom Whiting) Schneider, Janet (Thomas) Kruzel, Larry Van Heel, Melvin (Brenda) Van Heel, Kevin (Amanda Hand) Van Heel, Mary (Doug) Mielke, Joyce (Mark) Albertson, John (Lisa) Van Heel, Steven (Melissa) Van Heel; 38 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Ronald A. Krupa, age 75 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Alvin J. Van Heel, 88 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away Monday, March 1, 2021, at his residence. A Mass of Christian Burial took place on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial took place in the St. John’s Parish Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Alvin was born on April 17, 1932, in Spring Hill Township to the late Richard and Adeline (Stalboerger) Van Heel. He was united in marriage to Frances Gerads on January 27, 1953. Together they rented a farm in St. Francis, MN until Alvin was drafted into the U.S Army in September of 1953. He served for 2 years in Alabama and Georgia, where Frances joined him after basic training. After his honorable discharge, the couple returned to the farm in St. Francis. In 1958 they bought the family farm near Swanville, MN where they raised their 10 children. In 2016, Alvin retired

The Mass of Christian Burial for Aaron M. Welle, age 18 of Holdingford, was held on Tuesday, March 9 at the Church of All Saints – St. Mary’s in Holdingford.

Aaron passed away on Friday, March 5, at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.

Emma Jean Knopik, 73 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial took place on Monday, March 8, 2021 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial took place in Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Funeral arrangements were with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Swanville.

Emma Jean was born on May 2, 1947 in Little Falls, MN to the late Gordon and Gertrude (Fietek) Yort. She grew up in the Swanville area where she attended and graduated from high school. Emma Jean was united in marriage to Richard Knopik on August 28, 1967 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN. She was employed as a beautician for many

Alvin Bous Jr.

Alvin Bous, 89, of Long Prairie, passed away on February 23, 2021 at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center.

Private family services for Alvin will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Clarissa with Fr. Mitchell Bechtold officiating. Burial will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls.

Alvin John Jr. was born November 19, 1931, in Long Prairie, to Alvin Sr. & Nellie (Collins) Bous. He graduated from the Long Prairie High School in 1949. Alvin

Nieland. He was raised in the Holdingford area and graduated from Holdingford High School with the class of 2020. Aaron was a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky kiddo. He was a very caring and compassionate man and a great friend who loved playing sports; he always smiled and loved his family and friends.

Aaron will always be remembered by his parents, Jason (Jenny) Welle and Jennifer Feldewerd; paternal grandma, Diane Welle; maternal grandparents, Dennis and JoAnn Nieland; brothers, Hunter and Blake Welle; step-siblings, Katlyn and Logan Minette; as well as his aunts, uncles, cousins, Godparents, other extended family, and numerous close friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandpa, Arthur Welle. years as well as assisting her husband on the farm and raising her four children. Emma Jean enjoyed tending to her vegetable gardens and flower beds. She also loved reading, working on puzzles and watching the birds at her home.

Emma Jean also assisted her son Steve buy, sell and manage his extensive toy and antique collections. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother that always enjoyed her time spent visiting or shopping with her family.

Emma Jean took great pride in manicuring her massive lawn at her home. She was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN. Emma was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Emma Jean is survived by her husband, Richard Knopik of Swanville, MN; children, David (Susan) Knopik of Apple Valley, MN, Sheryl (Henry Chang) Knopik of Edina, MN, Jill (Jason) Loven of Medina, MN and Steve Knopik of Swanville, MN; siblings, Collette (Vernon) Ehrenberg of Swanville, MN and Curtis Yort of Moose Lake, MN; grandchildren, Emily Loven, Alyssa Loven, Claudia and Sophia Chang, Sam Knopik, Maya Loven, Sarah Knopik, and Andrew Chang.

Emma Jean was preceded in death by parents, Gordon and Gertrude Yort and sister, Sandy Goldenstin. was drafted into the US Army in 1953 and honorably discharged in 1955. While in the Army, Alvin worked as a mechanic and was quite a boxer. Upon his return, Alvin married Louise Anderson on September 8, 1956 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Minneapolis.

They made their home in Cottage Grove for 34 years. In 1992, they moved to Long Prairie and lived on Lake Latimer for the last 28 years. Alvin worked at Oldsmobile, North Star Steel and owned his own service station, over the years he did mechanical work for many family and friends. Alvin was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the DAV. Alvin is survived by his wife Louise, children: Alice (Mauricio Gonzalez) Stephens, John (Julie) Bous, Paul Bous, Philip (Suann Zine) Bous, and Amy Pavek; 22 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Sylvia, Carol and James.

Swanville City • February 2, 2021 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, February 2, 2021. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, John Dragseth, Norm Carlson, and Jim Molitor. Absent: Tony Maciej. Also present: Clif Allen and reporter Tyler Ohmann.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, January 5, 2021 was reviewed. A motion was made by Jim Molitor to approve the minutes. John Dragseth seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by John Dragseth to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Clif Allen, city engineer, presented resolution #21-0202A an authorizing application for small city development program application for funding for the City of Swanville. After discussion, John Dragseth made a motion to accept and sign resolution #210202A. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. A small cities development program application conflict of interest disclosure form was presented to council. After discussion, John Dragseth made a motion to accept the application, Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The third form Clif presented was for the City to have a Public Hearing to inform residents of the upcoming water systems improvements. Jim Molitor made a motion to adopt citizen participation plan for a public hearing to be held March 2, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. Norm Carlson seconded the motion, all members voted in favor, motion carried.

The cities yearly renewal insurance through the League of MN Cities was discussed. After discussion Norm Carlson made a motion to accept the building values as presented from the League. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange has been working with Region Five Development Commission on getting an Energy and Environment grant. Mayor Lange presented to council Resolution #21-0202B which would approve the application for the Energy and Environment grant. Jim Molitor made a motion to sign the Energy and Environment grant resolution #21-0202B. John Dragseth seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Local Board of Appeal and Equalization is scheduled for Tuesday, April 20, 2021at 10:00 a.m. in

the Swanville Center.

Lucky’s Saloon liquor license will expire March 6, 2021. Fees charged in 2020 are as follows: Off Sale $150.00, On Sale $2,000.00, Sunday $250.00, and 2:00 am Closing $100.00 for a total of $2,500.00.

Jim Molitor made a motion to renew Lucky’s liquor license for 2021-2022 with the same fees but to forgive $500.00 because of the COVID Pandemic. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment.

Julie Hollermann, City Clerk/Treasurer Grey Eagle Township • March 1, 2021 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, Mike Rohe and Erv Herdering Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Mike made the motion to accept the agenda. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the February 1, 2021 minutes to the board. Ray noted the in the R&B report he was talking about Big Birch Lake not Little Birch as reported in the minutes.

Mike made a motion to have the minutes amended to say Big Birch Lake. Ray made the second. All in Favor. Ray then made the motion to approve the minutes as amended. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for February. Claims list included claims 35463553 for a total of $2,837.76. Ray made the motion to approve the claims as presented. Mike made the second. Motion carried. Mail included two donation requests, advertising for brushing and mowing, and a pamphlet from Minnesota Township Association on legislative policies.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray received a call back from the DNR office in Little Falls about the access on Big Birch Lake, he stated the Township could cut down the dirt pile and that no permits would be needed to use the access. He is working with Parks and Trails

on dust control for the Arctic Drive access as well. He is also planning on meeting with the crack filling company about 335th and Ascot Road. Discussion was had about the pros and cons of doing more dust control and how to handle costs.

Additional agenda item: The clerk presented the audit report from Dennis Bacon and it was reviewed by the board and will be presented at the annual meeting.

Short Courses for this year will be online, present-

ed by the Township Association.

Ron asked about the frozen sewer, he will contact the city.

Dr. Keith Warren Blake

his children and Kevin’s children in sports and in the Long Prairie High School Band. He was concerned about the direction of US History instruction and championed the publishing in magazine format of the story of the founding of the United States. His dream was to have every high school student in the country to have their own copy. He was able to have 1000 copies printed and they were used in local schools.

Keith enjoyed fishing several lakes in Minnesota and took annual fishing trips to Canada. He also hunted and kept his family supplied with ducks, pheasants, venison, and occasionally antelope.

Keith enjoyed water sports—swimming, skiing, and sailing.

He became a fulltime resident on Lake Osakis in 1974 when he and Carol were divorced. Keith continued to spend his summers there, including the last one in 2020.

Keith never lost his passion for travel and bragged that he had visited all 50 states except for Maine. He often was joined by his long time travel companion Nettie Peterson. Keith made one trip to Europe. He purchased a home in Key Largo. There he enjoyed hosting children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren during winter vacations.

Health issues plagued Keith the last months of his life and he had hospitalizations in Miami and Long Prairie. His final days were spent in the Long Prairie Nursing Home.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents Fulton and Lucille Blake, brother Francis, many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is survived by his children Marcia (Jim Collins), Greg, Kevin (Debra), and Lisa Knudson (Lou), grandchildren Brian, Sean, Sarah, Kristen, Philip, and Alison, and ten great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for the spring. Interment will be in the cemetery in Evergreen Cemetery in Motley, Minnesota in the Blake family plot.

Dr. Keith Blake, 94, passed away in Long Prairie on February 21, 2021. He had been suffering from cardio-pulmonary arrest.

Keith was born in Motley, Minnesota, on March 19, 1926, the younger son of Fulton and Lucille (Ostrander) Blake.

The family spent his early years on the family farm in Motley headed by Fulton’s brother Harding. Fulton was employed by Peter’s Meats for many years which meant moves for the family around Minnesota. Keith attended four different schools during high school, Long Prairie, Clarissa, Willmar, and Detroit Lakes. He ran track and cross country and played basketball.

After Keith graduated high school in 1944, he enlisted in the Navy and spent the remainder of World War II in the South Pacific on the island of Saipan. He was an electrician and helped ensure ships could refuel rapidly and also supplied his fellow Navy mates with freshly made ice cream.

Returning to Minnesota, Keith enrolled at St. Cloud State, taking pre-optometry requirements. He entered the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago in 1948. He was accompanied by his bride Carol Traver, who he married in Detroit Lakes just before leaving for Chicago.

Keith graduated from Optometry School in 1950 and returned to Minnesota, establishing his first optometric practice in Hawley, Minnesota where daughter Marcia and son Greg were born. In 1954 the family moved to Long Prairie where Keith established his long time care of the vision needs of people in town and the surrounding area. Son Kevin and daughter Lisa were born.

Keith had other business pursuits. He was a distributor of the Umbaugh gyroplane in the 1960’s and later an investor in LakeView Supper Club on Lake Charlotte. He was a member of the American Legion and served as Commander. The VFW enjoyed his service as QuarterMaster during part of his membership.

Poppy Day Chair was his assignment for twenty years. He was also a member of the Lions Club.

Keith was a member of the First United Methodist Church (now Peace United) in Long Prairie and served in several capacities.

-Cyndi Dear Cyndi, I firmly believe that one of the best ways you can make sure your kids are ready to face adulthood when the time comes is to teach them how to handle money at an early age. The reason?

Learning about money, and how to manage it in a wise, mature fashion, is about a lot more than just dollars and cents.

There’s a quote from author Andy Andrews I really love. He says, “The goal is not to raise great kids. It’s to raise kids who become great adults.” If you think about it, there’s a subtle but powerful distinction here. Kids might behave well out of a sense of obedience or even fear, but that doesn’t mean they’ll do what’s best for them once they’re on their own. To raise kids who later become great adults, you have to begin instilling good character traits in them at an early age.

Work equals money. When you teach kids to work, you’re teaching them responsibility. Whether it’s chores around the house or a job at the mall, work involves

accountability and following through on tasks. Work shows kids they are in control of their actions, and that they will reap the rewards or consequences of those actions.

Teaching kids to save teaches them patience. Today’s world is one of instant gratification, and saving money makes you slow down and think. It also shows kids they can’t have every little thing they want the moment they want it.

When you teach kids to give, you’re teaching them generosity. A willingness and desire to give doesn’t always come natural to us when we’re young. Parents should encourage and model the act of giving, because generosity is a wonderful character trait and a powerful weapon in the fight against selfishness and greed.

Finally, teaching kids to spend responsibly is a great way to teach wisdom.

All kids totally get the idea that spending money is fun. That’s a no brainer. But when you get involved in teaching spending as something that should be thought through and done with care and reason, you’re imparting the idea of using good judgment and thoughtfulness before taking action.

Dear Motor Medics, We have had a lot of flooding in our area due to heavy rain after a record cold and snow. I drive a 2010 Chevy Cobalt and it is extremely low to the ground with the lowering kit I installed on it. Last week I was driving home, and I ran into a flooded area and since no one reading this will know it was me, hopefully, I thought I would be cool and see how fast I could go and make a huge spray of water up on the side of the road. Well, the car made it about 100 feet and suddenly died. The engine would not turn over. I had a buddy tow it home and we found water in the air filter, so we drained it and had to pull the spark plugs and get the water out. Since then, the car has a miss on one plug that will not fire but it is sparking and is dry now. What is going on.

So, your problem. When water gets into an engine it can bend rods Since you have spark the next step is to check compression for loss.

I have a 2015 Chevrolet Impala with over 200k miles, and it runs perfect other than that sometimes the doors will lock when I start the car without pushing any buttons and when the outside temp gets below 10 degrees it sometimes starts itself and runs for about 20 minutes then shuts off. I have had it at a local shop three times for the starting issue and they cannot find it but never have seen it. This has happened at least five times in the past year.

My car does not have a remote start so it cannot be that. I have owned it for three years and this year is the first time it has done this.

Dear Michelle, Yes, your car may be possessed, by the remote start ghost. The only way a car can start and run by itself for a predetermined amount of time like yours is doing is to be running on a remote start. Since you say that the car runs for twenty minutes, we can rule out the factory remote start because they are limited to ten minutes on a GM car. It must be an after-market unit. You may not have a remote for it but if a mechanic checks under the dash under the cover they will likely find one. Have it removed if it is malfunctioning or get it replaced.
