Today a reader, tomorrow a leader -By Harvey Mackay Years ago I was on a flight from Minneapolis to New York when a business man sitting next to me reached in his briefcase and pulled out my first book, “Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive.”

I was going crazy inside and blurted out, “How do you like that book?”

“Well,” he said, “My boss gave me a choice of three business books to read. I picked this one because it was the shortest.”

Talk about a letdown, but at least he was reading. And I sincerely hope that the short chapters and many business lessons gave him plenty of take-home value.

In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, March is designated as National Reading Month – a month to motivate Americans of all ages to read every day.

Reading is fun and has many benefits, regardless of your age. It's a key component of education and professional development. Books illuminate your imagination, enhance your vocabulary, build confidence, and improve memory, writing and communication skills. Reading also has immediate and long-lasting health benefits such as increased cognitive function, empathy and decreased levels of stress.

Books are a great source to learn from top mentors in all subjects even when you can’t meet with them personally. They write books to help people. Reading about experiences is almost the same as living it.

World renowned entrepreneur and author Jim Rohn said, “Everything you need for your better future and success has already been written. And guess what? It’s all available.”

I mostly agree with Jim – with one deviation.

There are so many excellent books written every year, and if the information in one doesn’t grab your attention, you can try another author’s approach.

Inscribed on the Thomas Jefferson Building at the Library of Congress are the first eight words of this quotation by philosopher and writer Henry David Thoreau that reads: “Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations. Their authors are a natural and irresistible aristocracy in every society, and more than kings or emperors exert an influence on mankind.”

Do you realize that just 200 years ago, only about 12 percent of the world’s population could read and write? Today that number is between 8590 percent. Just imagine the progress made as the world becomes more literate. The possibilities are limitless.

People’s lives change in two ways – the people they meet and the books they read.

Charlie Jones first uttered something similar to this, and I have repeated this point every speech I’ve given to corporate audiences. I believe it’s that important. You cannot open a book without learning something.

“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates’ loot on Treasure Island,” said Walt Disney. “And best of all, you can enjoy these riches every day of your life.”

Whenever I read a book, I want to get at least one idea from it that I can use the rest of my life.

The same with listening to speakers. If we can do this, there’s no way we can’t all become more successful.

Books are easier to access now than ever before. I keep several downloaded on my phone and iPad when I’m traveling – much easier than when my briefcase was bulging with reading material in the “old days.” Audiobooks have long been one of my go-to pastimes.

Bestselling author Og Mandino said: “Many years ago, when I was just about as complete a failure as one can become, I began to spend a good deal of time in libraries, looking for some answers.

I found all the answers I needed in that golden vein of ore that every library has.”

Interesting that April is National Library Month.

Radio, television, computers and the Internet were proclaimed to be the final replacement for conventional books when each first became popular.

But more books than ever are being published and more copies are being sold. Here’s my prediction: traditional paper pages will not become extinct

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Tree Sweets

Soon there will be sweet sap moving upward under the bark of the Maple and Box Elder trees. It happens every year when the trees begin to start growing their leaves. The Maples usually begin to move sap first. It's a special time of the year, when there is a slight aroma of tree sweetness as one travels through the wooded area.

Many have said, “how do you know when the sap is moving?” As the sap moves up the tree, it will reach the ends of the small branches, which when snapped, begin to bleed sap. The sap can be tasted easily, because if the sap is readily moving, it will drip a few drops per minute. This is not commercially gathering sap, but it gives one the opportunity to taste it's sweetness. Squirrels love the taste of the sap and will frequently bite the bark on a branch to make it bleed. Sap Suckers and Wood Peckers love to get as much as possible. There are also times when there is a lot of sap in the trunk of the tree the frost will cause the bark to split creating a banquet for those drinking sap.

Later, bugs will be attracted to the crack and create another banquet for bug-eating birds.

Sometimes in a warm, quiet day one can hear the drops of sap dropping on the leaf cover from the previous fall. It's just a great time to spend a little quiet time in the woods.

Sap gathering is much more popular from the Maple trees, since it has more sugar than the Box Elder. To create Maple syrup one would need 40 gallons of sap to create a gallon of syrup after the boiling down process. To get a gallon of Box Elder syrup, you'd need 80

gallons of sap. There have been several people who made it a practice to harvest sap each spring to use as a sweetener on cereal. Others boil it in an old coffee pot and add coffee to make a really tasty cup.

Our area has Maples and a large number of Box Elders. There are 47 farms in Minnesota commercially producing Maple syrup.

However, their production is just a fraction of states like New Hampshire and other north eastern states.

Many years ago, the Native Americans that lived in areas with Maple trees processed the Maple sap into Maple syrup and with further processing created Maple sugar.

History doesn't tell us if the immigrants from Europe had no history of the use of Maple sap, or if they learned it from the Native Americans that lived in the North-eastern United States and Canada. Many of the first settlers used processed Maple sap as we use sugar. Sugar was at the grocery store, but that was frequently further than a horse and wagon could travel in a day, so it was very infrequent. One also must take into consideration that sugar costs money, which early settlers lacked and Maple sap was free. Processing the sap was done in the Spring, when the temperatures frequently go below freezing at night, which probably required a fire in the stove for warmth anyway, so it would seem reasonable to make syrup.

Maple products were used in breads, cookies, cakes, ham, bacon, baked beans, pies and candy and still are used for making the same recipes today by some homemakers.

Today sugar is more convenient, but it doesn't have the same taste as Maple products.

Native Americans used the things that the forest offered, but when the immigrants arrived, the forests were destroyed for lumber and farmland. I think maybe the people that were here felt frustrated to see the trees disappear For feedback or story ideas, email Tom at tom@swanvilleinsurance.com.

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Gunshot: March 8, 2022: At approximately 9:28 AM, the Avon Police Department responded to a gunshot call in the 300 Block of Char Avenue NE in the City of Avon. The initial call to the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center was that a male had reported he had been shot in the chest. The male victim was further reported to be conscious and breathing. The Avon Police Department responded to the scene and was assisted by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, the Central Minnesota Violent Offenders Task Force, the Minnesota State Patrol, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Enforcement Division, the St. Joseph Police Department, the Belgrade Police Department, the Albany Police Department, and the Cold Spring-Richmond Police Department. The Avon Fire Department, Mayo Ambulance Service, and North Air Care Helicopter also responded the scene. The 18-year-old victim was flown to North Memorial Hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound. The Avon Police Department is currently investigating the incident and is being assisted by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Division. During the initial portion of the call, the Avon Elementary School was placed into lockdown for a short period of time. Investigating officers are still working the case; however, at this time there is no ongoing danger to the public as this is not believed to be a random incident. As this is an active and ongoing investigation, no further information will be released at this time.

Elizabeth L. Meldaus

Elizabeth L. “Tootie” Meldaus, age 92 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Saturday at the church. A private inurnment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Elizabeth Louise Buchholz was born June 17, 1929 to Albert and Ida (Fritzlar) Buchholz.

She graduated from Long Prairie High School, and in 1947, she married Raymond Meldaus in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She worked as a bookkeeper/payroll clerk at Sears, Drug Supply, Crown Auto, and Braun’s. Tootie and Ray lived in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, and after retirement, the couple moved to Big Birch Lake in Grey Eagle and wintered in Florida for many years.

She loved cooking and baking and had a reputation as a fabulous cook. Tootie enjoyed playing cribbage and doing puzzle books. She loved spending time and sharing a laugh with family and friends.

Tootie was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she served as the church auditor. She also devoted many years of service to support the Annual Meatball Supper.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Meldaus of Big Birch Lake; son, Jeffrey (Carol) Meldaus of Anoka; daughter, Susette (Pat) Smith of Maple Grove; grandchildren, Joelle (Andy) Pidhayny of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Justin (Jenny) Meldaus of Minneapolis, Ry (Joelle) Meldaus of Little Falls, and Matthew (Liz) Meldaus of Burtrum; six great grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Deb McCloskey of New Brighton.

Tootie was preceded in death by her parents; son, Brian Meldaus; sisters and brothers, Doris Guse, William Buchholz, Victor Buchholz, and Grace Larson.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle. Memorials are preferred to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. The family respectfully requests masks be worn at the service.

Donna Marie Michael Manning, 66, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on Friday, February 25, 2022. She was born on August 27, 1955 in Kansas City, Missouri to Robert and Alice (Burns) Lenington.

Donna was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri.

She attended Blue Springs High School graduating in 1973. She went on to attend Penn Valley, UMKC, and graduated from Law School at the University of Kansas in 1981.

Donna started her own Law Firm Practice in 1983 in Olathe, Kansas. Her primary practice was Family Law. She was a distinguished member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

Her hobbies included gardening and floral arrangements, crafting with the grandkids, baking, balloon art, and photography. She was involved with Johnson County Old Settlers for many years and was President in 2018. She was the Committee Chair for the Old Settlers community flower show. Additionally, she was a member of the Olathe Garden Club and the MoKan Daylily Society. She was a former member of the Olathe Jaycees, and was elected as the first female President of the Jaycees in Kansas. She was also a former Regional Director of Girls Scouts.

Donna lived for her kids and grandkids. Her happy place was on her paddleboat, Wally, in the middle of Mound Lake, Minnesota, where she gave her grandkids rides, read countless books, took photos of the sunsets, and listened to the loons.

Donna is survived by her loving husband, Robert "Bobby" Manning; mother, Alice (Burns) Lenington; brother Dale Lenington; seven children: Ryan Manning, Matt Manning, J.T. Manning, Ben Manning; Dylan Manning, Casey Manning, Allison (Manning) Geist; and nineteen grandchildren with one on the way.

Funeral Mass was held Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Queen of the Holy Rosary, Bucyrus, KS. Buried took place at Mount Calvary Olathe Cemetery.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the January Senior High student of the month, junior Nicholas Kedrowski. Nick is the son of David Kedrowski and Melinda Spieker.

Nick enjoys a wide variety of activities, including playing football and basketball, spending time with friends and playing games of all sorts. He is unsure of future plans at this point but is leaning toward going to a two-year college. Nick has been playing basketball since fourth grade. and has been playing football since seventh grade. Football is easily his favorite sport. Outside of school, he participates in youth group and volunteers with Swanville Athletic Boosters. Nick is consistently on the A Honor Roll and has been honored with the All Conference Academic Award in Football. Nick’s favorite thing about school is spending time talking with and having a good time amongst friends. His advice for other students is to “work hard, get your work done and do your best to enjoy your time.”

Math Instructor Liza Hasse says “Nick has matured into a remarkable young man.

He demonstrates kindness, politeness and compassion towards others. In class, Nick is responsible for getting his homework done in a timely manner. Nick always tries to do his best and he takes the time to learn from his mistakes. I very much enjoy having Nick in class.”

Therese is the daughter of Rob and Joyce Bryce.

She enjoys hanging out with family and friends and doing pretty much anything outdoors.

She plans to go onto post-secondary education and become a dental hygienist. Therese has participated in volleyball, basketball, and softball since 6th grade. She participated in theatre during her seventh grade year. She is consistently on the A and B Honor Roll and last year won the award for most improved for softball. Therese’s favorite thing about school is seeing friends every day. Her advice to other students is “Be kind and always have a positive attitude even when you might not like it.” Outside of school Therese volunteers with SAB, her church and has helped with various Swanville Carnival activites.

Social Studies instructor Tom Bzdok says “I really enjoy having Therese in class.

She has a fun personality that makes her enjoyable to be around. She always seems to be in a cheerful mood and never fails to greet you in a friendly manner. Her positive energetic personality is passed on to those around her putting everyone in a bet-

ter mood. Therese is also very focused on school and her grades. She sets high academic standards for herself and works hard to achieve them. She is very deserving of this recognition. Congratulations Therese!”

-Aiden Dear Aiden, You both definitely need good level term life insurance policies. Stick with 15- to 20-year level term life insurance, and make sure that coverage is separate from anything provided by your employer.

Each one of you needs 10 to 12 times your yearly income wrapped up in a policy. If you make $50,000 a year, that means you need a policy with $500,000 to $600,000 worth of coverage. The idea of life insurance is to take the place of income. If you or your wife died, the other could invest the insurance money and replace that lost income.

You do not—I repeat, not—need accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance. These policies are cheap, but they’re pretty much worthless because of the long list of conditions they won’t pay out for.

Most pay out only a small portion in cases of dismemberment, and many won’t pay a death benefit if you die from a medical procedure,

Dear Motor Medics, I recently had to have a suspension part replaced on my vehicle and I went the cheap route and found one on the internet at half of the price that my local store was offering and at that cost I could not pass it up. Being so cheap and with the free shipping I figured it made sense. The warranty was six months, but I figured they would not sell them if they all went bad and at that price I could by another one if it failed. I installed it myself and 1000 miles later was left stranded missing a wheel.

The car was towed, and they found the part I had was very cheaply produced. I tried to call the company, but they have no phone and do not respond to my emails. Is there any way to know how good a part is when purchasing one from a source other than the vehicle manufacturer?

Ford Focus I own here in the states but had more zip and the fuel economy was much better than what I get at home. I noticed two things when I refueled the car. One the very high cost as compared to ours and two the very high-octane content. I typically use 87-90 octane at home but the lowest available overseas was 95 and with 5% ethanol it was 99. This seems really high. Does this have something to do with the better mileage and power and if so, why don’t we have it here in the states?

-Martin in Shelton, Washington Dear Martin, Most people would not have noticed the octane rating, good eye. You are correct about the octanes effect on fuel economy and power. With higher octane fuel the engines can run higher compression and more timing without detonation equaling more power and efficiency. Therefore, a car with the same cubic inch engine overseas could get better mileage than its counterpart in the states. I can only speculate on the reasons we don’t see it here but would guess the price of the higher-octane fuel combined with emissions regulations probably play a part in it. Manufactures are continuously working on ways to increase power while using the same size engine and octane fuel available at American pumps today.

Steve Bitz was in attendance to discuss the drainage issue on his property. This is as a result of culverts that were installed on Minnesota Street that were either plugged with dirt or collapsed, during the sewer project. Steve would like the City to consider cost sharing the project.

The Clerk was instructed to contact the City Attorney for guidance before a decision would be made.

Jeff Barber from Cans R Us was in attendance to discuss the restrooms at Bass Lake and Laughlin Park.

Service at Laughlin Park will be discontinued until spring, however it was brought to the council’s attention that the toilet lid is busted and has to be replaced. Jeff reported that both restrooms could use a fresh coat of paint and recommended that hand sanitizer be installed in each restroom. There would be no cost for the hand sanitizer units if the City paid $25 for each hand sanitizer filler.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to purchased hand sanitizers from Cans R Us for the Bass Lake and Laughlin Park restrooms. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Council discussed a letter that was received from Duane Karls. The matter was turned over to the City Attorney.

Complaints have been received regarding snow piles on city streets and pushing snow across public streets. Residents are reminded that it is illegal to pile snow on any public street or pushing snow across any public street.

With upcoming retirement plans for the City Clerk in April of 2023, the City Council will need to start looking at a time frame for a suitable replacement.

There were no building permit applications for council consideration.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce Lori and I have a chance to stay at Breezy Point Resort for the week. I am writing this article only one day into our “get away”. FYI, if you ever get a chance to stay here, it is gorgeous, even in the winter. As I am sitting in the living room of this “condo” I noticed the picture on the wall, and it immediately brought my mind to Peter getting out of the boat. In fact, the picture is just a boat, on a sandy beach surrounded by weeds and blue water.

In Matthew 14, Jesus had just fed 5,000 men plus women and children, a very large crowd. Jesus sent the disciples on ahead of Him, across the lake. Jesus finished dismissing the crowd and He went to pray. Jesus often went off by Himself to pray, we ought to take notice of that. If He needed and wanted to, how come we don’t?

Let me get to the point of this article. The disciples see Jesus, they are afraid, but realizing that it is Jesus, Peter asks Jesus to invite him out to Him. All Jesus says is “Come” (v. 29). The boats back then were not like a rowboat or canoe of our day. The sides of the boats were tall, and you had to climb out or climb in. Verse 32 says “And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.”

I would like you to think about Peter for just a moment. Jesus said, come, and Peter had to climb out of the boat and then lower himself into the water and let go of the boat. Most of the time we give him a hard time for not trusting Jesus. I give him more credit, but what I have an issue with fits most of us better. We start out good, our intentions are good, and we get a great start, but then trouble comes... we get laid off, or a child gets sick… and you find yourselves looking at the waves. Can I encourage you today, Keep your eyes on Jesus? He is our Rock, and He will keep you and hold you.
