Let it go -By Harvey Mackay Joe paced back and forth in his sister’s kitchen one Sunday before dinner. His sister Carol recognized the worried look on his face and called him over to where she stood next to the sink.

“Hey Joe, can you hold on to this for me?” She handed him a can of vegetable scraps.

Joe took the can and walked outside where he threw the scraps in the compost bin before returning to the kitchen.

“Why did you toss my scraps? I asked you to hold on to them.”

“Why would you ask me to hold onto garbage?” Joe asked.

“I thought you liked holding on to useless things,” she replied.

“What do you mean?”

“You’ve been wearing a path on my kitchen floor, preoccupied with whatever is on your mind. I doubt if you heard anything I said to you before now, yet you instinctively tossed the compost scraps without giving them a second thought.”

He had to admit that Carol was right.

“But is there a point to this?” he asked.

Carol offered him a simple suggestion: “Why don’t you apply that same logic to whatever is bothering you? If it’s something you can change, change it. If it’s something you can’t change, let it go.”

Holding on to things that are eating at you is not just unproductive; it’s a recipe for disaster. In other words, throw out those scraps before they start to smell.

Carol’s advice is golden. Her words are especially appropriate for managers who have so little confidence in their staffs that it affects their job performance.

Are you a micromanager? A secondguesser? If you are, you need to stop.

This is not a healthy way to manage people – for yourself or other employees.

As a manager, you need to look at your need to control. Are you trying to get your employees to do things the way you do them because you think your way is superior? This is a dangerous mindset for a manager because you are not looking ahead to the outcome but are getting caught up in controlling the

process, according to Johanna Rothman on the Rothman Consulting website. Is that what you really want to do? Is it productive?

Many managers micromanage as a form of quality control. These managers often find themselves working unbelievably long hours in order to redo the work of others. If you’re always swamped with work and you just can’t seem to let others take a piece of the responsibility pie – then you’ve got a problem.

Not trusting your staff is essentially the same as not trusting yourself to manage them effectively.

Learning to trust your staff and allowing them to make mistakes is part of being a mature manager. Many managers believe that it is a virtue to make every decision along the way – to control every detail of, well, everything.

But the truth is, a good manager helps make sure that her direct reports keep the flow of work going. A good manager is more interested in the growth of his direct reports and the eventual positive and freeing workplace that can be developed when they are operating as autonomously as possible.

To improve your ability to manage, you will need to let go of your need to control quality at every stop. This does not mean you sacrifice quality. It simply means you are not the quality control traffic cop. You are a manager, and that Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Shoes

Our shoes today are usually the “oxford” size and are the style of loafers. They are usually made of synthetic materials, along with a small amount of leather or man-made leather-like material.

They are frequently colored white and are worn by both men and women. Those who wear these shoes know that while wearing them, they will be able to “run faster and jump higher” than those who are not wearing these special shoes. This is an added comfort factor for the senior citizens, who need these extra abilities.

The new style “loafers” make reference to the shoe style, not to the activities of those of us who are more mature. They are worn until they are no longer white or in some cases, they have developed a hole on the outside or the sole wears out. They are then put in the closet for a couple of years, or if the owner knows that the shoes will never again be worn, they put them in the garbage immediately. The shoes are then usually replaced with another pair of white shoes, because they are very comfortable.

Some of us remember footwear in our younger years. For young girls, there were two pair of shoes, one pair of “Sunday” shoes, which were worn to church, special family gatherings and maybe to town or school. As these shoes became no longer attractive, they became “work” shoes and were worn around the house, the garden or the yard. For young boys there was usually a pair of “Sunday” shoes and a pair of work shoes. The work shoes were usually built strong and were about 6 inches high. Those work shoes were worn until they no longer fit and then, like all of the other kids shoes in the family, they were passed to a younger child.

During the shoe’s lifetime, there was a need be repaired. This repair was usually due to the uppers separating from the sole or a need for new soles and heels.

In my family, my Grandfather did the shoe repair, or when he didn’t have time, they were taken to Uncle Fred’s shoe repair shop in Long Prairie.

Shoes, like many other items of clothing, were passed to younger children.

They frequently did not fit perfectly, but if there was use left in the item, it needed to be worn. The item may be used, but it was new to the next recipient and was worn and appreciated. (At least you

remembered the person from whom it came every time you had to wear them.)

Not always with an affectionate thought.

Style in past years was not as important as it is today. We didn’t have the media showing the new styles. We all came from a family that was working hard to “make ends meet” and there wasn’t a need to have the most socially accepted attire. Many of us wore homemade shirts and dresses.

There is a new generation who never experienced hand-me-downs. I think they missed something good.

means you assist people in being able to do their jobs. You don’t block their ability to do it by second guessing, redoing work and spending long hours in the office. You give them the tools to do their jobs correctly and with the best possible results.

Letting go is not always simple.

But don’t let worrying about what you might lose when you let go change your resolve. Consider the lesson this little fellow learned.

A little boy was playing one day with a very valuable vase. When he put his hand inside it and couldn’t pull it back out, he called for his mother. His mother tried gently to slide his hand free, but it remained stuck.

She was ready to break the vase

when she said, “Ok, let’s try one more time. Open your hand and hold your fingers straight out and then pull.”

“Oh, no, mommy!” the boy cried.

“If I do that I’ll drop my quarter!”

The Grey Eagle/Burtrum Lions are looking for new members to join our organization. Come as a visitor to one of our meetings and see what we are all about. Obituaries Leo A. Ripplinger

Leo A. Ripplinger, age 80, of Shoreview died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, March 1st, 2018 at 10:00 AM with visitation one hour prior at the Church of St. Timothy. Interment will take place at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.

Leo was preceded by wife, JoAnn; son, Craig; siblings, Helen, Michael,

Julia, Frank, Barbara, Paul, Joe, Kathryn and Alois.

He is survived by his loving children, Kim Ripplinger and Pam (Dan) Saiko; cherished grandchildren, Kayla, Cole and Sydney; siblings, Elaine Gerads, Alvina Mader, Jim (Erma) Ripplinger, Bernice (Ernie) Skwira and MaryAnn Kostreba; in-laws, Millie, Lucille and Marlys Ripplinger, Butch Kortenbusch, John Niewind, Denis and Carol Holthaus, Mike and Kathy Niewind, Chuck and Alice Niewind, Mike and Kathy Phillipp, Joe and Char Niewind, and Richard and Sue Burg; and many nieces and nephews.

Patricia J. “Pat” Petermeier

They were united in marriage on August 10, 1955 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple farmed north of Melrose where they raised their family.

Pat was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Christian Mothers. She enjoyed gardening in her huge vegetable garden, potted flowers, reading, working crossword puzzles, sewing, and loved cats.

Survivors include her children, Stephanie (Tim) Hennen of Freeport, Debra (Paul) Casper of Maple Grove, and Kevin Petermeier of Melrose; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Serving as casket bearers will be Bryan Hennen, Tim Hennen, Paul Casper, Adrianna Hennen, Jonathan Brenny, and Mitch Fennell. Cross bearer will be Courtney Casper and scripture bearer will be Casey Fennell.

Memorials are preferred to the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta.

Patricia J. “Pat” Petermeier, age 85 of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 26, 2018 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m.

Saturday, March 3 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Virgil Petermeier, osc concelebrating.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Christian Mothers will pray at 6 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Patricia Jane Skeffington was born August 20, 1932 in Park Rapids, Minnesota to Leo and Anna (Mertes) Skeffington. She grew up in Park Rapids and at the age of 19, she moved to Melrose to start teaching at the Petermeier School.

This is where Pat met Joseph Petermeier.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served as an elder for three years and also helped with custodial services. He spent most of his days playing softball, gardening, baking and spending time with his family. Brian was a devoted father, he was always at his children’s events and special occasions.

Brian Gene Koester, 54 year old resident of Little Falls died Monday, February 26 at his home of natural causes. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 3 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville with Rev. Gary Hendrickson and Rev. Kevin Zellers officiating. The burial will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Swanville, MN. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 P.M. on Friday, March 2 and from 10:00-11:00 A.M. on Saturday at the church in Swanville.

Brian Gene Koester was born July 19, 1963 in Little Falls, Minnesota to the late Alfred and Rosella (Bliese) Koester. He attended school in Swanville, Minnesota and graduated with the class of 1981.

Avoiding The Plague -By Sheila Ripplinger Have you ever had a contagious illness that kept you quarantined? I recently, along with many others in the Nation, experienced the dreadful Influenza A virus. It hit me extremely hard and caused me to do a lot of thinking about my life. I would consider myself a grateful person, because I am extremely thankful to God for all that I have. However, this illness forced me to take a deeper look at how I am living this life that I have been given.

I took a venture way back to over thirty years ago when I had another plague which I would consider a form of leprosy.

It wasn’t exactly leprosy in the physical form of the disease, but I was treated as though it was. I was left to be a single mom. I was alone and did not know where to turn. I prayed and literally cried out to the God that I remembered from earlier in my life when I was ten years old. I knew that I needed Him, but did not know where to go to find Him. I decided to find a church that was the same denomination as the one from my childhood. I remembered how loving and kindhearted the people were and I was going to search for that kind of treatment for my new disease.

I will never forget that first step that I made. I compare it to the way that I felt when I wore a mask in public during my recent illness- I needed medication to survive otherwise I would not have gone out to the clinic. Anyway, it was a bit uncomfortable because everyone avoided coming close to me with fear of contracting whatever I had. For the record, I totally understand because I tend to be a germ freak. So, as I entered this church with my two small children, feeling a bit out of sorts, yet having high expectations knowing I was doing the right thing for us, I realized after attending week after week that I had a disease that nobody wanted to come close to. Not one person sincerely reached out to me, I was avoided like I had the plague. I tried the morning bible study with people that outwardly knew the Bible, yet it was nothing like the church people that I remembered as a child. I truly appreciated the nursery that my children attended so that I could learn, but the memory of those same people’s looks and treatment flashed back when I wore the mask in the clinic a few weeks ago. Nobody even dared to ask me my

story about how I contracted the leprosyor rather, how I became a single mom.

I eventually moved on from there, and continued searching for that genuine ‘Christian’ love that I was given as a child.

I knew that it had to still exist somewhere.

The more I got to know the Jesus of the Bible, the more I knew how to treat people no matter who they may be. It is not a religion or denomination title that makes a true ‘Christian’ church. It is the people that truly follow what Jesus taught. ‘You will know them by their love.’~ John 13:34.

As I am still learning from my personal painful experience, I do not want to ever treat another human the way that I was treated. I am actually thankful that I had that life experience because ‘would I otherwise be the same as what I see in a lot of church people today?’ I would hope not, and my internal scars from my leprosy remind me that I am a child of the King who has been totally healed from the inside out! I pray that I never take that for granted! I am still a work in progress, but my daily prescription is God’s Holy Word that continues to cleanse me.

Jesus still teaches the same message to those who sincerely come to Him with their diseases and brokenness. He gives us new blood, a new heart, and a new spirit! I am so thankful for that church from ‘Up North’ in my childhood that planted the genuine seeds of Truth in the way they showed love towards me and taught me Scripture. Ironically, my very first memorized verse from back then was 1 Samuel 16:7, ‘The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ It was because of them that I knew to keep searching. And those kinds of church people do still exist because Jesus truly lives!

We should continue to wash our hands to avoid illnesses, but may we truly practice what Jesus taught when it comes to the sinners who need His Grace, Mercy and Love.

-Julie Dear Julie, The fact that it’s a large amount of student loan debt doesn’t change anything. Baby Step 2 is where you pay off all debt except for your home.

I hope you have a nice, large income with which to fight that big, nasty pile of student loan debt. Believe it or not, I’ve seen even worse situations. I’ve talked to people who went $200,000 into debt for a four-year degree in a field where they’ll make $50,000. That kind of thinking and behavior is ridiculous, but it’s out there.

Whatever you do, don’t let this student loan debt hang around for years and years. You’ve got to get focused and intense about getting control of your money. That means living on a strict, basics-only monthly budget. After that, start throwing every nickel and dime you can scrape together and save toward those student loans as fast as possible.

Your income is your largest wealthbuilding tool, Julie. You can’t save, and plan for the future, when all your money is flying out the door to pay back debt!

Dear Dave, I have a credit card that I haven’t made a payment on in almost two years.

The debt has been sold a couple of times, and now a collector is saying I owe $1,200. The original amount was $500.

I’d like to work something out, but I can’t afford $1,200. What should I do?

-Luanne Dear Luanne, They’re asking for $1,200 because they’ve added things like interest and late fees. They want to make as much money as possible on an old debt they bought for pennies on the dollar.

If you can afford $500 right now, ask if they’ll accept a one-time payment to settle the account. Get it in writing if they accept the offer, and don’t give them a penny until after you get a copy of the written agreement. Once you have the agreement in hand, send them a money order or cashier’s check for $500. Do not, under any circumstances, give them electronic access to your bank accounts.

You waited too long to take of your obligation, Luanne. That made things more difficult and more stressful than necessary. I’m glad you decided to do the right thing, and clean up your mess, though. Better late than never!

Freeport Thefts On February 21st, two thefts were reported in the Freeport area. The first was reported at 9:29 a.m. at a business in the 300 block of Industrial Drive. Sometime overnight, the suspects cut a lock to gain entrance into the fenced in yard.

February 20, 2018: At 17:51 James Adamek was traveling east on County Road 48 in Round Prairie Township when he hit a patch of ice and lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway, hit an approach and landed in a field. The vehicle sustained front and rear damage.

Adamek was uninjured in the crash.

February 27, 2018: At 13:32 a burglary was reported at a residence on 341st Ave. South of Burtrum. Hunting and fishing items were stolen from the residence, also missing is a mini 14 rifle.

items, they took three Empire brand space heaters, which were described as two larger ones and one smaller one and numerous items of recyclable metals including aluminum and copper.

The second reported theft occurred in the 100 block of 2nd Avenue Northeast. Overnight, someone broke into a parked truck and stole several items.

Those items included DeWalt drills, a DeWalt radio and a power converter.

The drills can be identified by the letters MPW that were scribed on them. The loss in this theft was estimated at $500.

Anyone who may have seen some suspicious activity or has information on the thefts is asked to contact he Stearns County Sheriff’s Office at 320-2514240.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Peace with God: Romans 5:1-11 Romans 5:1 is clear. “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” The following passages continue to address this relationship of being justified by faith and receiving God’s grace using a variety of words we use to try and explain that peace, the absence of conflict that we have through faith, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

To fully understand Peace with God we need to understand where conflict with God comes from. Once again our study of God’s Word brings us back to our sin. Sin is a word we use to explain a lot of things but a simple definition is that which puts us in conflict with God. In the beginning mankind lived in perfect harmony with God. When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit they sinned and destroyed that harmony. From that point the very nature of mankind and our flesh entered a state where we and our children exist in sin and begin life in conflict with God and regardless of what we do we are unable to change that.

Everyone knows someone they just can’t stand. The more you get to know them the worse it gets. You try to accept them for who they are yet it is hard because everything they do or say grates against your personality or the way you think and act and they just have so much that is not right it makes any kind of relationship or peace difficult.

Sin, our transgressions, our self-centeredness, our disregard for God’s created order all grate against God and create conflict between our creator and us. This is why we need to be justified to have peace with God. Justification can be defined as being placed in a right position. For someone to be justified in a re-

lationship, past transgressions and sins need addressed. In earthly relationships transgressions tend to even out over time so we are taught to forgive as we have been forgiven. God, on the other hand, is faultless in regards to the conflict we have with him so reparations for our sin must be paid. This payment is made by the life, suffering and death of Jesus, God’s only Son, on the cross.

Now through faith in Jesus God can simply take and place us in the right position in relationship with him. He justifies us simply because we believe in Jesus his one and only Son and in doing so we have peace with God. Romans 5:1 is clear, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” I love having peace with God. Conflict with God is not good.

Peace with my creator means when I die physically he will give me new life.

Peace with God means that I need not fear his wrath. Peace with God is good for the soul now and for ever. I pray the simple message of Romans 5 helps you find peace with God, now and forever.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

School safety is a layered subject as we work on solutions

Our country has been saddened again by yet another senseless school shooting.

Our prayers go out to those families affected as they deal with the unimaginable grief of losing a loved one. We ask ourselves why… why do these tragedies occur, and how do we stop them from happening again.

It is imperative that we make our schools safer. That’s the one thing that will result in an immediate lowering of the danger level. How we do that is still to be decided. Topics such as metal detectors at building entrances or armed personnel in school buildings should be discussed locally at school board meetings. In Minnesota, it’s already permissible for those with consent-to-carry permits to be armed while in school, with the written consent of administration.

It appears that some in our society have become de-sensitized to violence and death. With all the violent video games available today, along with graphic movies and even some television programming, it may seem to some that violence has no lasting consequence. Just count up your score and start the game over. That’s not the way it works in real life. Guns and knives and bombs are real and, used for the wrong purpose, can have lasting consequences.

After these real-life incidents, we see parents on the news trying to describe what it’s like to lose a child, forever. We see students grieving after losing their best friends and classmates. Together, we HOME OF PIONEER FEEDS

as a nation need to address this problem and come up with solutions that work.

The opening week of session was highlighted by passage of a bill that, once again, funds the Minnesota Legislature.

As you may recall, those same funds were line-item vetoed last year by Gov. Dayton.

That move led to drawn-out court action that really didn’t address the central question; that being, yes, the governor has the right to line-item veto spending appropriations, but does that include the funding for another, supposedly equal, branch of government?

With the passage of this new legislation and the assurance from the governor that he will sign it, funding for the current biennium will be restored.

However, the nagging question remains as to a future governor’s power to deny funding if legislation he or she favors is not passed.

This may fall in the “be careful what you wish for” category: We had been nearly snowless in our part of the state up until last week. Then, the skies opened and we received snow on three separate occasions in the space of a week. By my unofficial count, around 17 inches fell on our farm, which meant getting the tractor and snow blower out and clearing the yard. The white stuff was nearly knee high as I trudged through it on my way to the shed.

The white blanket was certainly pretty, but it also brought us back to the reality of what a Minnesota winter can be.

Traveling was also made more difficult as my trip home from St. Paul last week was an adventure. We tried going to a church supper Saturday evening but turned around because the plows hadn’t been out yet and the totally white landscape made it challenging to stay on-course.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office Bowlus Thefts Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen reports that charges are pending against 20-year-old, Joshua Johanson from Bowlus, MN and a 13-year-old juvenile male from Holdingford, MN for their involvement in several thefts in the city of Bowlus, Morrison County.

On 02-25-2018 at approximately 5:54 am, a Bowlus resident called the sheriff’s office and reported a vehicle theft. The resident explained that the vehicle stolen eventually returned to the residence and two individuals ran from the scene.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Deputies responded to the area and while investigating the vehicle theft, they received multiple complaints of thefts from vehicles in the city of Bowlus. Several items were reported stolen, including snowmobile jackets, snow pants, tools and money.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office later received a tip which led to a search warrant executed at 207 2nd St. North in the city of Bowlus, MN. Several of the stolen items were recovered during the search.

Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen states that all vehicles that were targeted were left unlocked. This is a good reminder to all residents to lock your vehicles. In general, people committing these types of crimes are looking for the path of least resistance. Please do your part and ensure that all your vehicles and valuables are secured.

Joshua Johanson and the 13-year-old juvenile male are facing motor vehicle theft related charges and tampering with a motor vehicle. Johanson is currently in custody at the Morrison County Jail.
