in a cheery voice.

“Do you stock Ben Gay?” asked the caller.

“I’m not sure.”

“Well, does your store carry Vicks Vap-ORub?” queried the customer.

“I don’t know,” said the new clerk.

“Do you have Pepto-Bismol on hand?”

“I couldn’t tell you for sure if we do or don’t.”

“You don’t know much do you, young lady,” said the caller.

“No, I guess I don’t,” the new employee responded. “In fact, when I said, ‘Good morning,’ I told you everything I know.”

Obviously, this new hire had not been trained to actually help customers. No excuse for that. But to put her in a position to potentially drive customers away for lack of preparation was not her fault.

Responsible businesses understand that customer needs come first, and staff must be capable of meeting them. Because so much interaction is dependent on the phone, let’s start there.

Good phone skills are crucial for customer service. At least this young worker was cheerful, sincere and had a positive tone – three important ingredients in telephone communication skills.

When you answer the phone, you want to project an enthusiastic and natural tone, making the customer feel comfortable in carrying on a conversation.

Listen and try your best to understand the problem and then resolve it as quickly as possible. Studies show that a call under five

minutes is a success.

Put a smile in your voice. A person’s voice sounds and feels friendly and warm when you speak with a smile. A study by the University of Portsmouth found that people can hear whether a person is smiling on the phone.

Clearly enunciate your words and speak as clearly as possible. I realize it is frustrating for many people when they call customer service and reach a person with an accent or a different dialect that can be difficult to understand. Because call centers are located all over the world, it’s important to make sure your representatives are understandable and patient when callers ask for information to be repeated.

Give customers the time to vent any frustration. Don’t interrupt them, as they can get more upset if they aren’t allowed to tell their story.

Watch your language and avoid slang. And it should be obvious: Don’t chew gum, eat or shuffle papers during a call. Give callers your undivided attention.

Never argue with customers. Remember that they are the most important people in any business. The customer is not dependent on you or your company; you and your company are dependent on them. They are part of the business and not outsiders. They bring you their wants, and it’s your job to fill those wants. If that is not possible, be honest and explain what you are able to do, rather than focusing on what you can’t.

Try to learn the caller’s name and use it naturally in your conversation. Doing so reinforces that you are focused on them.

In customer service, your ultimate job is to leave the customer satisfied, so do whatever you can to make that happen and finish any conver I don’t know anyone who likes being put on hold. Although you may have to ask a client or customer to hold, it doesn’t have to be frustrating for the caller. Here are a few courtesies that can make the wait time a little more tolerable for the caller: • Don’t multitask. When you try to do two things at once, you’ll be more likely to miss something important a caller is trying to tell you.

• Ask before placing a caller on hold. Don’t

just tell customers to “please hold.” Ask if they can hold. Wait until they respond, and then thank them.

• Don’t tell customers you’ll put them on hold for “just a second.” Instead, give them a reasonable estimate of how long you’ll be away from the phone and why they’ll be on hold.

• Faster doesn’t always mean better. Speed should always be second to carefully attending to a caller’s needs.

• Take notes. Don’t rely on your memory.

The next time your phone rings, let your customers know you mean business!

created to encourage the purchase of bonds. Many of them showed pictures of well known sports figures and actors recommending bond purchases.

Gatherings and promotional celebrations by well known individuals and famous military personnel were used to encourage the purchase of bonds. Bond purchase nation-wide tours were conducted. Radio programs and newscasts usually ended with a message of encouragement to buy war bonds.

It wasn't like the people in the USA were not aware of the war, they lived with strict restrictions and limitations on their ability to purchase items that were previously considered needed by Americans. These restrictions applied to food, gas and clothing, along with other items of daily use. The ability to purchase sugar was tightly regulated, (this must have created problems for the boot-legging industry). The use of automobiles such as miles driven, amount of gasoline allowed, the ability to purchase tires and a speed limitation of 35 mph definitely restricted their use.

Red meat consumption was discouraged.

Vegetable consumption was encouraged along with the creation of liberty gardens, which ultimately supplied 35 to 40% of our country's vegetable needs.

We were able to live quite comfortably in spite of the restrictions, knowing that our restrictions helped our military personnel over seas. Another way of supporting the war effort.

Recently, many large beautiful yards have begun to appear. I began thinking about the amount of garden space these yards were covering. If we created a way to preserve the garden produce nationally there would be a reduction of world

War Bonds

I recently wrote a story which included some information regarding the use of mustard gas in WWI. Someone said that their uncle, who was stationed in Europe during WWI, was involved in loading ships that were being sent back to the U.S. One of his duties was to load cages that contained troops, which had been affected by gas and had lost virtually all of their mental capacity.

It was thought that it was caused by mustard gas, but I have not been able to verify whether mustard gas could have that debilitating effect. If anyone has any information about WWI gas effects, please contact me.

Remember a time when school students would bring either a nickle or a dime to school each week to be invested in the war effort? Many of these coins were converted into war bonds.

War bonds were created by the government to help finance the material and equipment used to continue the effort in WWII. These bonds were a way to allow the government to allow it's citizens to invest in their own government to benefit the war effort. It also had a minor effect on the inflationary problems created by the war. The amount collected by the government was $56,000,000.

By comparison to today's inflationary standards, it doesn't seem like a big amount. When one considers that one dollar at that time is equal to twenty dollars today.

In today's world, if our government needs money, they either increase national debt, increase taxes or borrow it from China. There was an organized effort by the government to promote war bonds. Many ads and posters were

Daniel “Dan” A. Blommel Daniel “Dan” A. Blommel, age 70 of Avon, passed away surrounded by his family on Monday June 6, 2022, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m.

Monday, June 13 at Community Country Church in Holdingford with Rev. Gregg Valentine officiating. Interment will be at South Elmdale Congregational Cemetery in Holdingford.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the church in Holdingford.

Daniel Ambrose Blommel was born May 7, 1952 in Melrose, Minnesota to Aloys and Helen (Dickhaus) Blommel. He married Phyllis Lahr on November 30, 1973 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna. He worked at DeZurik in Sartell for 47 years and was looking forward to his retirement. Dan was a gentle easy-going man who was ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. His family always came first. Throughout the years, he attended many events for his kids and grandkids. His pride and joy were his grandkids and will be missed dearly.

Dan enjoyed fishing including his Canadian trips, playing cards especially 500 where he would often get a “perfect” hand, playing Cribbage, going on pontoon rides, and making memories at their seasonal camper over the last 34 years. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and placing bets on the drivers, attending Community Country Church, and was a member of the Walleye Hunter’s Fishing League.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Blommel of Avon; daughters, Stacy (Jed) Konsor of Holdingford and their children, Kylee, Brenna, Kinley, and Cora and Ashly (Ryan) Headley of Maple Grove and their children, Logan, Piper, Colton, and Maeve; siblings, Arnold "Arnie" (Mary Jane) Blommel, Leroy (Marilynn) Blommel, Herb (Cindy) Blommel, Mary (Gordy) Kuznia, Ann (Bud) Heidgerken, Joan (Mike) Ellering, Jim (Denise) Blommel, Bill (Yvonne) Blommel, Ken (Val) Blommel, and Lisa (Dale) Austing.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Aloys and Helen Blommel; parents-in-law, Alcuin and Viola Lahr; brothers, Gerald Blommel, David Blommel, and Patrick Blommel; and nieces, Paige Luethmers and Heidi Deters.

Judy Baird Borgerding

Judy Baird Borgerding, age 79 of St. Cloud, passed away October 10, 2021.

A Celebration of Life for Judy will be held on June 18th at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle, MN. Friends may call and visit beginning at 10:30 AM. Please join us for a luncheon which will be held at the church following the service. A private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Judy was born February 8, 1942 to John and Elma (Koski) Baird of Grey Eagle, MN. She was raised on a farm and graduated from high school in 1960. She left the area to attend college at Westmar in Le Mars, IA. Judy enjoyed playing the saxophone and continued that in the college band.

After 2 years there, she transferred to St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, MN finishing her degree in elementary education in 1964. From 1964-1979, Judy taught in elementary schools in Hutchinson and Hastings, MN. She led the single life, traveled, and played volleyball.

Marriage to Mark Borgerding on February 24, 1979 brought Judy back to Grey Eagle. She was again on a dairy farm. She took on the job of “keeper of the calves.” She also fed family deer hunters and wood makers. Her love of teaching found her substituting at local schools and working at Bow Bear, an after school program. Judy had been very active as a teenager in the United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle and resumed a high level of participation once she moved back.

Her talents found her in many leadership roles.

Judy was widowed in 2002 but remained on the farm until 2012 when she moved to St, Cloud to be near family. She continued her many church activities at the Sartell site. That gave her great joy until the very end of her life.

Judy faced health challenges later in life including breast cancer, complications of Parkinson’s, Lewy body dementia, and cause of death - heart failure. Her final homes were Country Manor assisted living and nursing care in Sartell for 18 months and Melrose Hospice Care for 2 weeks. Thank you to both. A very special thank you goes to Tisha Baird, Judy’s niece. She was a loving, compassionate, frequent visitor. Indeed, a guardian angel on earth.

Judy is survived by siblings Jeff Baird of St. Cloud and by Joy Lucius (Dan) of Lakeville. Her nephews, Brant, Kyle, Jeremy, and Evan and her nieces Tisha, Brigette and Lindsey also survive.

Grandnephew Trent Baird and grandnieces Ariel, Layla and Ella Baird will also miss her. Many Borgerding family members will remember her, too.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and sisters-in-law Pat Baird and Lenore Ohnstad and brother-in-law Butch Borgerding.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the United Methodist Churches of Grey Eagle and Sartell. Also, consider Parkinson’s.

Judy has gone to her eternal life with the Lord.

Dale J. Primus, age 58 of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Dale Joseph Primus was born July 28, 1963 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Catherine (Olmscheid) Primus. On September 3, 1993, he married Nancy Berscheit at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. He worked at Jennie-O Foods in Melrose for many years before farming east of Sauk Centre. When he wasn’t farming, he enjoyed playing softball, volleyball, and spending time at the lake cabin with family and friends. He was a man of few words but was quick-witted with a great sense of humor.

Dale was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Primus of Sauk Centre; children, Krista Primus of Bellingham, Washington, Andrew Primus (Mara Piro) of Sauk Centre, and Riley Primus of St. Louis Park; father and mother, Joseph and Catherine Primus of Melrose; brothers, Rich (Carol) Primus of Albany, Virgil (Mary) Primus of Melrose, and Melvin (Brenda) Primus of Melrose; sister-in-law, Ann Marie Primus; and many nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Primus, Jerry Primus, and baby boy Primus; and nephews, Joel Primus and baby boy Mitchell Primus.

Rebecca Kay Saxlund was born March 21, 1958 in Cooperstown, North Dakota to Burdett and Helen (Cheatley) Saxlund.

She loved reading, knitting, baking, crosswords, and spending time with family, especially being a grandma.

Ron M. “Blackie” Wolters of Grey Eagle, MN passed away on Saturday, May 28 at Centra Care Health in Sauk Centre with Kat by his side.

Ron Matthew was born on September 25, 1936 in Sisseton, South Dakota. He married Kathy “Kat” Hinnenkamp on May 6, 2006 in Alexandria, MN. Ron had a strong sense of adventure in his early years. After leaving middle school, he worked in the shipyards in Duluth, making many trips on the Great Lakes to and from Detroit, Michigan. After leaving the shipyard, he worked at Arlington Bar by the Old Hamm’s Brewery where he served up $.35 beers with a shot. That is where he found his passion and strong sense to own his own business. He became the owner of a liquor store in Vadnais Heights and proudly named it Wolters Liquor. Ron enjoyed life to the fullest including riding his Harley Davidson, snowmobiling, and his many trips to Nome, Alaska where he enjoyed catching Salmon and Cod. He also enjoyed golfing at three courses he had memberships to. He recorded the number of rounds he golfed every year, some years it was over 100 rounds. He could tell you how well he did without keeping score, the 19th Hole was his finest. He also enjoyed spending time with “Kat” at their home on Big Birch Lake. He welcomed family and friends to their home as they would visit over a cocktail and play the jukebox in the garage. Ron was well known for saying “If the Grain Belt Sign is lit, stop on over.”

Survivors include his children Mike (Marcia) Wolters, Maureen (Hans) Miezinger and twin daughters Marilyn and Michelle. Also, his beloved wife Kat and her children Jeff (Sharon) Wessel and Lynn (Tom) Brinkman along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ron will be dearly missed by his family and friends he held close to his heart.

Marie Esther Hamann, age 87 of Avon, MN, passed away on June 5, 2022, at Serenity Village in Avon.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 10, 2022, at MillerCarlin Funeral Home in Albany from 4-7 PM. Burial will be take place in the parish cemetery following services.

Marie was born on March 26, 1935, in Albany, MN to Christopher and Mabel (Christen) Zimmermann. She married Milton Hamann on August 21, 1954. Following their marriage, they farmed in Farming Township. Marie also worked at Honeywell Corporation, JCPenney, and the Albany/Avon school district.

Marie is survived by her brothers and sisters; Alma King, Olivia (Robert) Redding, Erma Froelich, Arnold Zimmermann, Roger (Marilyn) Zimmermann; 28 nieces and nephews to whom she cherished; and many loving extended family members.

Logan is the son of Susan and the late Tony Leyendecker.

Logan has many interests including riding four wheelers, riding snowmobiles and working on his truck. He also enjoys helping neighbors with cutting wood and helping fix broken things around the house. Logan has plans to work in the construction field, make a good living and live his best life! Logan has been an integral part of the Super Mileage Team for the last two years. His favorite thing about school is spending time in the shop room. Industrial Tech Instructor Joel Rieffer says, “I have known Logan since he was in sixth grade Physical Science. I have watched him grow into an impressive young adult. I am fortunate to have him in many of my classes.

He joined the super mileage team this year and showed his talent for designing, fabricating and welding on a car he and other students built from scratch. The car they built averaged 235 mpg. He has become quite an asset to me in my class. When I am helping a student and several need help, he is right there to give me a hand or help other students with their projects.

He is usually the first one in class and the last to leave. I’m not sure if Logan plans to go on to college but no matter what he plans to do in the future, I believe he will do his utmost best, as he does in my classes. It is comforting to know Logan and students like him will be the ones contributing to our community for many years to come.”

Social Studies instructor Tom Bzdok adds, “I have had Logan in several classes over the years. He has always been an extremely hard-working individual who never hesitates to do what is asked of him. Logan is also very dependable and is a man of his words. If he says he is going to do something, you can be assured he will do it to his best ability and has a lot of pride in the work he does. Logan always seems to be in a good mood and never fails to greet you in a friendly way. He gets along well with others, and is well liked and respected by his classmates as well as adults. Logan is very deserving of this recognition - Congratulations!”

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2008 Jeep Compass and I purchased a simple Bluetooth system that I want to install in it. It’s a standalone system that has an FM transmitter so I can play it over the radio. Well I was trying to install it and my original idea was to wire it to the fuse box with one of those add a circuit connectors until I found out that the fuse box is under the hood and not located under the dash. I want to splice it into the vehicle wiring with proper fuses of course but I need one wire that's always hot and one that's hot only when the ignition is on. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

-Steve in Van Nuys, California Dear Steve, Many people find themselves wanting to add an accessory to their vehicle and nowhere to draw power from. The add a fuse kits you mentioned are one way to do it if the current draw is very low. The second would be to take power from the radio circuit. They have harnesses available to tap into the wires at many car stereo shops. The first thing you will need to do is find out how much current the device will use. Too much of a draw can damage the vehicle. Consulting with the folks at the stereo shop will help you to determine draw as it is something they often have to do.

When I first start the engine the hydraulic valve lifters make a lot of noise. The lower the outdoor ambient temperature the worse the noise seems to be. When the engine reaches full operating temperature the noise goes away. Could this be an issue with the engine oil passages being gummed up? If this was the issue do you recommend a product that could clean it up?

Without taking the engine apart for inspect you could eliminate the possibility of the engine sludge issue by cleaning the oil system and using an additive. We use engine oil cleaner then the engine tune up from Justice Brothers. They seem to work very well for us. You need to add the cleaner then run the engine for ten minutes, change the oil, and then add the engine tune up. If it’s not an excessive wear issue this should help. You may need to repeat the process down the road if it occurs again.

Burnhamville Township • April 26, 2022 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held April 26, 2022 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Vice-Chair Bruce Johnson. Members present include Supervisors Bruce Johnson and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; and Treasurer Pam Throener. Mike Berscheit was present virtually. Also present were Erv Herdering and Beth Ramacher.

The minutes from the regular meeting of March 29, 2022 were approved on a motion by Sup. Johnson and second by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received letters from Todd County Public Works bridge inspection list, Todd County Auditor Emergency Election plan, notice from the state that our weed grant was awarded. Sup. Johnson made a motion and Sup. Berscheit seconded it to purchase spray equipment and supplies for noxious weeds. Motion passed.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to purchase backhoe attachment for skid steer. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Muellner to pay all bills numbered 6235 through 6250 totaling $8,174.40. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

For the Emergency Election Plan the board named Brighter Days Church as the alternate polling place and Shirley Hulinsky as head judge with Pam Throener as backup.

The board heard an update from the county township officer annual meeting.

The clerk will forward weed inspection training information and materials by e-mail to supervisors.

The township will have the annual clean-up day on May 21st from 9 to 11 am on Main Street in Burtrum. After discussion the charges for tires will increase by $2 each and the other fees will remain the same.

In the road report the board approved the spring road inspection list. The contactor has bladed all the roads once and will do again.

Gravel will be added as weather and road conditions allow.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $63,188.48. Sup. Muellner motioned to approve and Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Johnson to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:37 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, May 31 at 7 pm in the Burtrum Community Center.

By Kimberly Cook, General Crime & Child Abuse Services Coordinator, Hands of Hope Resource Center Elder abuse is the mistreatment or harming of an older person. Approximately one in 10 Americans age 60+ have experienced one form of elder abuse.

Elder Abuse can include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, along with neglect and financial exploitation.

Physical abuse: Use of force to threaten or physically injure an older person.

Emotional abuse: Verbal attacks, threats, rejection, isolation, or belittling acts that cause or could cause mental anguish, pain, or distress to an older person

A friend hosted a dinner party for people from work and everyone was encouraged to bring their children. All during the sit-down dinner one co-worker's three-year-old girl stared at the man sitting across from her. The girl could hardly eat her food from staring.

The man checked shirt, felt his face for food, patted his hair in place, but nothing stopped her from staring at him. He tried his best to just ignore her but finally it was too much for him. He asked her, "Excuse me little girl, but why do you keep staring at me?"

Everyone at the table had noticed her behavior, and the table went quiet for her response. The little girl said, "I just want to see how you drink like a fish."

Sexual abuse: Sexual contact that is forced, tricked, threatened, or otherwise coerced upon an older person, including anyone who is unable to grant consent.

Exploitation: Theft, fraud, misuse or neglect of authority, and use of undue influence as a lever to gain control over an older person’s money or property.

Neglect: Failure or refusal to provide for an older person’s safety, physical, or emotional needs.

If you suspect someone you know may be being abused, contact your local adult protective services or law enforcement to investigate the situation.

As I am writing this, a friend of mine and I are in Citronelle, Alabama helping my brother at the Camp that he is maintenance at. One of the main things we are doing is repairing damage done by carpenter bees. Now, I have never heard of such a thing, but they do a tremendous amount of damage in wood. Carpenter ants are similar, only you can’t see the damage done by those unless you go looking.

Earlier I was looking for a piece of paper in my brief case to make a note with and came across a compass, then I found another, and believe it or not one more; there were three compasses in my briefcase. Just to justify myself somewhat I need to say, I have used them to teach children lessons on finding things, by following directions.

On our way down here, we used GPS to find our way but several times we were wondering what direction we were traveling. If we would have known where true north was it would have been easy to know the direction. Regardless of where you are going, you need to know the way, a compass shows us where true north is and from there, we know what direction to travel to find where we need to go.

In life the Bible is our compass! Psalm 119:9-11 says “How can a young man keep his
