Look beyond human resources to find a job

By Harvey Mackay A big stack of my mail comes from frustrated people who have tried very hard to find jobs without success. With the slow economic recovery, it’s still mighty tough out there.

As I researched my last book, Use Your Head To Get Your Foot in the Door: Job Search Secrets No One Else Will Tell You, I frequently heard concerns from people who were upset at human resources departments. One person said that of the more than 300 résumés he’s sent out for jobs for which he was qualified, he’s only heard from 17, positive or negative.

He was hoping for some better feedback so he could improve his employment odds.

HR people don’t deserve the bad rap.

Let me shed a little light on the subject.

First, you have to realize that human resources is not a profit center and because of that, they will often be short staffed. When cuts occur, human resources is among the first to be hit.

For example, here at MackayMitchell Envelope Company, we have one HR manager to service our three plants. Our company recently received 900 applications for one position. And that was through e-mail

alone. There were hundreds of applications sent through the mail as well.

Being an envelope guy, it pains me to say this but my advice is to always email your résumé. It’s much easier to get a response. You will seldom get a response if you mail your résumé. Don’t sabotage your chances, because the amount of paperwork that is handled by human resources is astounding.

Be aware that big companies have software that scans résumés for key words, so use language that computes. Use key words in your résumé that tie in with the requirements of the position. You may need to tailor your résumé for each job. Be specific and clear about your credentials.

Don’t send out résumés blindly. Write to make sense to both the software and a human reader. At some point you will need to win the hearts and minds of real human beings.

Always try to differentiate yourself.

Don’t be boring. Don’t be predictable.

Don’t be just another candidate. Stand out.

Be different. Use a little creativity.

Your résumé has one purpose: to win an interview. Focus on the employer’s needs, not yours.

If you are fortunate enough to get a job interview, pay particular attention to how your résumé is read and physically handled by an interviewer.

• If the description of a particular phase of your career or some other section of your résumé is constantly being questioned, you almost certainly need to improve the statement. Listen carefully. It’s not enough to know that something is troubling people.

You need to find out what in particular is bothering them.

• Do readers find it hard to follow the organization of your résumé? Are they constantly jumping between pages or paragraphs when they read it?

• Do interviewers find the language

hard to penetrate? In an interview, are you constantly being asked to restate what you are saying? In particular, do they take your description of a position and restate it in terminology which uses more mainstream language?

• Is the information clearly laid out and presented in an appealing and inviting way?

If you lose out in a search, find out as much as you can about the person who won the job. Perhaps HR staff or a recruiter will be willing to share the qualifications of the successful candidate.

The great dilemma is that you are unlikely to find out you have a poor résumé because -- if it’s bad -- you won’t get an interview in the first place.

In addition, in these times HR staffs are overwhelmed with requests from people who are just looking for jobs to meet unemployment requirements. HR personnel want serious candidates who meet the job criteria.

Remember too that HR departments have many other functions besides screening and hiring candidates. They must also focus on benefits management, staffing issues, compliance with state and federal rules, among other duties.

My #1 piece of advice is to try to find the person doing the hiring in the company and contact him or her. You will still have to eventually go through HR, but if you can get someone to shepherd your application/ résumé, you have a much better chance of landing the job.

Mackay’s Moral: The purpose of your résumé is to enable you to resume work.

Elizabeth “Liz” Erickson, 61 year old resident of Long Prairie, MN passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, June 3, 2011 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville with Father Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Burial was at Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum, MN. Elizabeth was born on June 15, 1949 to Frank and Helen Kempenich. Liz graduated from St. Francis High School in Little Falls in 1967. She was united in marriage to Leonard (Corky) Erickson on July 8th, 1967 the couple resided in the Lake Beauty area and raised their seven children there. Liz worked at Sobania Hatchery in Little Falls, Minnesota for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends. Some of her favorite past times were putting puzzles together, picking agates, reading, traveling, collecting white bears and Elvis memorabilia.

Liz is survived by her husband, Leonard

30 years.

Michael enjoyed summer weekends at their family Cabin on Mound lake his entire life. Michael became friends with many of the local Mound Lake area people, and enjoyed hunting and socializing with many in the area year round.

He is survived by his two sons, Zachary & Lucas. Also, many family members: two sisters, a brother, nephews and their families. Also, many friends in the Mound Lake area.

He is Preceded in death by his mother, Mary Bernice, father, Harvey E, brother Gerald W. Jackson.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Frank & Helen Kempenich and brother, Phillip Kempenich.

Pallbearers were John Wippler, Joe Wippler, Donald Stavish, Duffy Aleshire, Dothan Aleshire, and Dean Ganz.

Funeral arrangements were with the Shelley-Gibson Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN.

Great River Regional Library (GRRL) will begin its annual Summer Reading Program (SRP) for children and teens ages 0-18 on Monday, June 13, continuing through August 13. Registration takes place at all 32 GRRL locations beginning June 13.

The goal of the SRP is to encourage reading and to keep young readers reading during the summer months. Various studies have shown that: • Reading over the summer prevents summer loss of reading skills • Summer loss of reading skills is cumulative. Children do not catch up in the fall because the other children are moving ahead with their skills. “One World, Many Stories Read to Me” for children from 0-3 prepares children for continued success through the development of early language skills.

It’s a program designed to help kids develop the first and essential building blocks to literacy such as letter knowledge and vocabulary. Parents receive a Read-to-Me reading record to complete for their children. The completed and signed reading record can be returned to the library for a prize drawing for parents who engage their children in early literacy skills.

“One World, Many Stories” for children ages 3-Grade 6 provides children with an incentive to continue reading throughout the summer. Participants receive reading record slips on which they record every hour they read. When a slip has been completed with five hours of reading, it may be turned in and the child can begin another. Children are encouraged to complete and turn in as many reading records as they want. Each completed reading record may be turned in for a chance to win local incentive drawings and regional grand prize drawings.

“You Are Here” for teens in grades 6-12 asks teens to track their reading in 30-minute segments which they mark on coupon sheets they then enter for local and regional incentive drawings. Reading books, magazines, graphic novels and newspapers counts for this program.

Each coupon sheet covers four hours of reading. Participants may turn in multiple completed sheets.

Programming: Many library events are happening at all GRRL locations to celebrate the program all summer long!

Exciting programs are being funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Funds, such as performances by GREAT Theatre, creative craft programs from ArtStart, ventriloquism classes, and mosaics workshops.

Living Memoirs of My Father

By Saralee Perel Dad and I were crazy about each other. He’s been gone for 20 years. But I’m finally understanding how vital it was for him that I have the life he never had - in marriage, health and work.

Before his death at age 88, I was the only one he recognized. By then, he couldn’t speak. My last words were, “I love you, Tatteleh (affectionate Yiddish for father).” To this day, I tell myself he heard me.

He was a lawyer. But when his father told him to manage the family shoe business, he quit his practice and obeyed.

He ran it for 40 years, and hated it.

Dad had a spinal disorder I recently found out I’ve inherited. Most of his movements were grueling. He needed a back brace to support his spine. Luckily for me, I had surgery that helped enormously.

As a teen, I wasn’t allowed to date non-Jewish boys or have Christian girlfriends. But I married a Christian man.

Dad, a devout Orthodox Jew, adored Bob. When he saw how much we loved each other, that was what mattered. Regardless of what Bob did for work, like selling plants, Dad would ask, “Is he happy?” He endearingly called him Mister Farmer.

He wouldn’t have me feel sorry for him. When he fell down the night before my wedding, he said to Bob, “Don’t tell Saralee.” He escorted me down the aisle, though he needed a walker. One day later, he became wheelchair bound for good. I believe it was his determination

to walk with me that kept his disability at bay until then.

Dad had a code of ethics. “Everything in moderation.” And, “No self pity.” If Mother was mean, he’d never sass back.

When I did, he’d say, “Never talk to your mother that way.” And clothes? He was always properly dressed, even to get the mail. He hated my stylishly torn jeans.

Thankfully, he died before I became disabled. He’d have been heartbroken to see me in my wheelchair. But he would have been overjoyed that I had surgery, so I wouldn’t be crippled like him.

At his burial, I touched the handcarved Jewish star on the wooden casket that held my father’s body. But it didn’t hold his soul. When the rabbi handed me a trowel filled with soil for me to sprin-

And my husband adores me like you did.” I felt choked up. “Thank you for loving me so much that you never once mentioned Bob wasn’t Jewish. And although you never showed it, I know how sad you felt that our own rabbi was unwilling to perform the wedding.”

Students in the sixth grade at Upsala Elementary School recently completed a science/physics unit which culminated in the demolition of towers that each student constructed.

Students studied different types and designs, and how they use various geometric shapes. Next, students had to draw their blueprint.

Each student was given 1,000 cm of 3 mm by 3 mm Balsa. Their tower had to have a 20 cm by 20 cm base, and a 5 cm by 5 cm top and a height of 30 cm.

The towers weighed approximately one ounce.

Little or no movement has been reported in the budget impasse between the Legislature and Gov. Dayton.

A meeting June 2nd of the Legislative Commission on Planning and Fiscal Policy ended with no progress when the Governor wouldn’t allow his commissioners of Revenue and Management and Budget to participate. According to Speaker of the House, Rep. Kurt Zellers, those two commissioners had agreed to testify but a letter received from the Governor hours before the scheduled meeting time nixed that idea.

to spending cuts, but so far hasn’t revealed what exactly he would be willing to cut. Also on June 2nd, he requested that an outside mediator step in to help resolve the budget deficit. At this point, I don’t think the people of this state expect that we should out-source these tough decisions. We are required to get this job done, and the Legislature is here, ready and willing to negotiate and reach an agreement.

While coming up with a budget solution has been the top priority, there have been other bills passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Dayton. Among them is a bill that will help nursing homes cut down on paper work by combining state and federal reporting forms for resident admission. Another bill provides immunity for school districts that make their facilities available for recreational use by members of the public.

Among the bigger bills signed by the Gov. is the Tax Policy Bill, authored

by Tax Committee Chairman Greg Davids. Modifications are made to Minnesota estate tax in response to federal legislation that re-enacted the estate tax for 2010. The bill also states that horse breeding, training or boarding farms are

The Melrose Area Historical Society will hold its Summer Ice Cream Social on the museum grounds on July 31.

Featured will be the Saint Croix Base Ball Club of the Twin Cities, playing the game as it was played in Civil War times. These athletes will go up against local players, but with a whole different set of rules.

Following the game, the Meire Grove Band, the oldest musical group in

Minnesota, founded in 1883, just back from performing in Germany, will play.

Local Municipality Minutes Swanville City May 3, 2011 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Community Center on Tuesday, May 3, 2011. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, AJ Johnson, Jim Molitor, Jim Piekarski, and Tim Grittner Also present: Mark Hallen, Reporter Tina Snell and Brain Zapzalka Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held April 5, 2011 were read. Tim Grittner made a motion to accept the minutes as read.

Jim Molitor seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given.

A motion was made by AJ Johnson and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Peterson stated that First State Bank of Swanville would like to purchase an electronic sign to replace the existing Swanville sign to the west of the City on Hwy 28.

Contents on the new sign would be changed by the inside of the bank.

Council members have seen signs like this around the area and agreed it would be a lot easier to change the words and be more eye catching than the existing one. Council would like to discuss further.

Mark Hallen, City Engineer, took a walk around the city tonight looking at the sidewalks. He stated that he could chip the cement off in different spots. Hallen stated he would write a letter to Tri-City and set up a meeting in Swanville to discuss what will be done with the

sidewalks and the City would like to discuss other sidewalk work that was done outside the 2009 water/ road project at the same time TriCity Paving is in town.

Job descriptions and employee policy were once again discussed.

The City Attorney looked at both, and feels they are both worded correctly. AJ Johnson made a motion to adopt both job descriptions and employee policy. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Abandoned homes and lawns needing cutting were discussed.

The Mayor will talk to the City Attorney and discuss ways the city can fix these problems and report back at the next council meeting, Land use permits were looked at. Swanville planning and zoning committee has previously looked at the following application and found they are within the codes. Jeff and Kerri Thoma would like to add on a 16’x14’ deck. AJ Johnson made a motion to approve this land use application. Jim Molitor seconded the motion.

Bob and Maria Vodak would like to build a 3 season porch. Tim Grittner made a motion to approve this land use application. AJ Johnson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Beau Barthel emailed the city office inquiring if he could have a chicken coop with chickens on his property. A resident can have 2 chickens on his land. Barthel would need a letter from his land owner stating he could build the coop and then a land use permit would have to be applied for.

There was also an inquiry about adding onto the city park

pavilion, to have a permanent beer garden that would be used during the carnival. The building size did meet the requirements but council decided to table this.

There has been complaints about the weeds and dirt by the townhouses. After discussion Mayor Peterson made a motion to have the clerk write a letter asking the owner of the townhouses to finish the landscaping before June 7, 2011. If building on this lot is in the plans, a new land use permit must be applied for. Either way a response is needed by the next council meeting. The motion was seconded by Jim Molitor. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Lawnmowers and bids were looked at. After discussion, Mayor Peterson made a motion to buy a 54” cub cadet mower for $4000.00 plus tax. Jim Piekarski seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

It was brought to the Mayor’s attention that Waltman Appraisal Service building is for sale for $50,000.00. This could be a possible new location for the library.

The Mayor will check to see if there are any grants available to fund this.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held June 7, 2011, 7:30 pm.

There being no further business, a motion was made by AJ Johnson and seconded by Jim Molitor to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:40 pm.

Tragic Loss & Healing: Our school and communities have tragically experienced the senseless loss of another student. There are no words to express the profound sense of loss that we have all experienced and on behalf of the school, we extend our sincere condolences to the family of Madalynn Swift.

How does a school and how do communities begin to recover from the loss of our young people? While this writer certainly does not have the answers, there are thoughts that will be expressed in this week’s column.

There are circumstances that we all have had to deal with over the course of our lifetimes and adults have a longer perspective of events than do students. Many times, young people are unable to look beyond the next hour, the next day or the next week when dealing with problems in their lives. Adults, generally speaking, are able to put things into perspective and understand that the difficult issues of today will get better with time and therefore are better able to deal with these problems.

An old friend who had the unique experience of being a school principal and then becoming a minister made the following observation to me when we were impacted

by the loss of a student under similar circumstances years ago. He told me that people will sometimes walk a fine line between making good and bad decisions and there will be times when someone will step over that line and make a decision that cannot be undone.

We will most likely never understand why a person stepped over this line, all we can do is reach out to those who may be walking the same line.

We all need to look at our family, friends and neighbors and try to understand what they are going through and reach out to them.

This is especially important for our students who have to deal with problems that they are not prepared for. We need to be diligent in making sure that anyone who needs help is talking to a trusted adult or those who are trained to help with these types of issues.

We cannot assume that people are “OK”; we need to take the extra step of asking and making sure.

Swanville Sr. High May Student of the Month Upsala Sr. High May Student of the Month Swanville Jr/ Sr High is proud to announce Rachael Beckman as the May Student of the Month for 10-12th grades.

Rachael is the daughter of Dean and Kathy Beckman.

Rachael enjoys many different activities, including playing sports, hanging out with family and friends, four wheeling and enjoying the summer season. Rachael has been very active during her high school career, participating in Volleyball and Softball for four years, along with being involved in theater productions all four years of high school. She has been on student council for the past three years, a National Honor Society member for her junior and senior year, as well as participating in yearbook production for the past two years. She also participates in the band.

Rachael also keeps busy by volunteering at area nursing homes, singing at retirement centers and helping at summer Bible camps.

Rachael has earned many honors

during her high school tenure. She was captain of the Volleyball team for both the ’09 and ’10 seasons, also earning All Conference and MVP those two years.

She is also currently the softball team Captain, earning All Conference for softball for the ’10 season. Rachael was also the student of the month last year.

Rachael will be attending Saint Cloud State University beginning this fall to study Criminal Law. Her advice to other students is “make every moment in high school count, you’re only young once.”

Liza Hasse, Math teacher goes on to state “I have worked with Rachael in various ways over the years. She has been a student in my classroom, on student council and has worked as my teachers assistant for two years. Rachael is self motivated and has a strong work ethic. She diligently works at a task until it is complete and meets high standards.

Rachael has the ability to set high goals for herself and she is also willing to put forth the work needed to achieve those goals. She has proven to be a positive leader time and again. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Rachael over the years and I will miss her dearly after graduation. I know that Rachel will be successful in life and she is very deserving of this honor.

Play Ball! Minnesota Youth Clinic takes place in Upsala June 18 The Minnesota Twins offer free baseball and softball clinics to you in Upsala on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at Upsala Baseball Field or in case of inclement weather at Upsala High School.

The Play Ball! Minnesota Youth Clinics program provides boys and girls from throughout the Upper Midwest with the opportunity to enhance their baseball and softball skills, while also hearing positive messages about staying in school and away from drugs and alcohol. Play Ball!

Minnesota Youth Clinics are funded and administered by the Twins Community Fund.

Clinics are open to boys and girls ages 6-16 and are divided into two 90-minute sessions; the first session is for 6-9 year old and the second for 10-16 year old.

The Upsala High School staff would like to recognize the May Sr. High Student of the Month, Carolyn Kokett.

Carolyn is the daughter of John and Lori Kokett and has five brothers and one sister.

Miss Kokett has been involved in many things throughout the years including, volleyball, FFA, NHS, student council, band, choir, and drama. Academically, Carolyn has been on the A honor roll consistently and is ranked 6th in her class.

Her studies come first and it shows. She has held many leadership roles including class officer, FFA officer, 4-H officer and first chair in band.

Outside of school Carolyn is involved in 4-H, the Morrison County

Dairy Princess program, and summer community theatre. She enjoys reading, playing flute, scrapbooking, watching movies, listening to music, singing, and spending time with her friends and family. Miss Kokett plans to attend St. Cloud State University and receive a teaching degree in Communication (Language) Arts.

Band director, Denise Cheney, states, “Carolyn is a very dedicated, talented student. I have worked with her for eight years and she has always been a leader and pushes herself to succeed. She has a sparkling personality that lends well to band, choir and drama.

Carolyn is a natural leader.”

Her advice for underclassmen is, “Step out of your box and get involved in high school. You may have to work at it, but the benefits are worth it.”

Congratulations to Carolyn on achieving this honor. The staff at Upsala hopes that you continue in your success as you head off to the new adventure of college.
