More street-smart ideas to try -By Harvey Mackay By Harvey Mackay You learn to be book smart in school, but you better not forget that you need to also be street smart. As I like to say, knowledge does not become power until it is used!

I succeeded because I have street smarts that I either developed or picked up throughout my career from some of the world’s smartest and most interesting people.

I have done four previous columns on street-smart ideas that have generated terrific reader feedback. Here are some more of my favorites.

First idea: Know thy competitor.

Walmart founder Sam Walton, richest man in America at the time, is walking through a K-Mart store with his CEO, David Glass. David told me this story personally. Sam suddenly stops in an aisle and says, “How come we’re not doing that?”

Sam Walton spent more time in K-Mart stores than his own Walmart stores.

Interesting fact: Both K-Mart and Walmart started in business the same year – 1962. Walmart’s sales last year were nearly $486 billion, while K-Mart sales were a paltry $10 billion.

Next idea: Channel your inner child. We start out as pretty creative beings – children let their imaginations take them to places they’ve never seen and do things that seem impossible. We encourage it as fun and playtime, but we should celebrate it as the potential for great discovery and accomplishment.

As Pablo Picasso, arguably one of the most creative artists who ever lived, said, “Every child is an artist; the problem is staying an artist when you grow up.”

Or maybe you can be inspired by another notable thinker, Dr. Seuss (aka Theodore Geisel): “Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you

try.”

Next idea: The most important term in any contract isn’t in the contract. It’s dealing with people who are honest. The second most important term is including the right to inspect all their books and records, including tax records, correspondence and so on pertaining to the agreement. Once that clause is in there, people with a tendency to get cute usually don’t.

Next idea: Everything is negotiable.

Everything has a price. A deal can always be made when the parties see it to their own benefit. Nine out of 10 lawsuits are settled on the courthouse steps before proceeding to trial. Even the most bitter of adversaries will sit down at the same table when they can be shown there is a greater advantage to themselves in negotiating than in fighting. The worst settlement is usually better than the best lawsuit.

Next idea: The given reason is seldom the real reason. You must find out the real reason to be successful. In sales, you are asking for the order your entire career. When a person says no, they seldom tell you the real reason.

For example, way over half the time the prospective buyer will tell you that your price is too high … there isn’t enough difference in price to switch …

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Old Boats

I’m sure that I have some readers who remember the old homemade, flatbottomed, wooden boats.

They were ultimately replaced by factory-made a l u m i n u m boats. This was followed by boats made for fun, not just for fishing.

My first experiences of fishing from a boat were, of course, in homemade, wooden, flat-bottomed boats. I remember them to be quite unstable in the water. They liked to tip to the side, creating an angle, which seemed to like to enter the water’s surface. Simply stated, you didn’t want to lean over the side. You all might get wet.

The boats were made of wood. The wood was 1 inch thick to withstand human weight on it’s surface and maintain the structural stability of the boat. A 2 inch beam usually went from the front end and continued on the bottom to the rear of the boat. The floor boards were fastened to the 2 inch beam in the center and to the bottom side board. The sides were usually steamed and bent to create a design similar to today’s modern boats. Boat motors were not popular, primarily because there was a concern as to whether the boat could with-stand the stress caused by the motor. These boats were made to be moved through the water with human powered oars.

Each year these old, heavy boats required repair work while they were home in the shed. They needed to have

the wood seams resealed and all of the nails and screw joints needed to be refastened. We usually applied pine tar to all of the seams. The boat was usually painted each year to help preserve the wood and create a more water proof boat. The paint was either gray or dark green. Being pretty was not the final desired result.

When the boat was finally manually carried to the lake, it was allowed to sit in the water for a few days, so that the wood could absorb water and expand.

Sometimes the expansion of the wood would cause buckling of the floor, which would require additional repair.

The water also added additional weight to the boat, which made it feel like you were dragging around a big rock.

Docks were either quite short or frequently, non-existent. I recall an incident which occurred on the shoreline of the neighbors cow pasture, where we were docking our boat. The boat evidently created a curiosity for the cows and one or more of them decided to step into it. The result was some broken floor boards and sinking in the shallow water. More repair.

The newer fishing boats were a real blessing, since they were more light weight, didn’t need to be constantly fixed and could accept a motor. Boat trailers began to appear and today we are aware that the boats spend much more time on the highway on a trailer, than they spend on the water.

they are concerned about your delivery schedule … you weren’t aware of the long-standing relationship with our current supplier … a myriad of reasons.

It’s your job to discover the real reason. Then and only then can you can work to overcome their objections.

Next idea: Paint your wagon. Did you ever notice how many people happen to work in office buildings more than one-story in height? And how many of these same people look out the window off and on during the day? Why not paint your company name and logo on the top of your delivery vehicles or trucks? It’s the easiest, least expensive and most neglected form of advertising.

Next idea: Call on people on their birthdays. I always make it a point to visit my customers on their birthdays.

If you can’t get to them personally, call or email them. Send them a humorous, but tasteful birthday card. Stress this tip with your salesforce.

You won’t believe how much business we write up on our customers’ birthdays. They are in a good mood.

Bring them a creative gift. You are not buying their business, you are building a relationship.

I once figured out that I make approximately 300 phone calls a year to my customers and friends on their birthdays. I always try to put a smile on their face by singing Happy Birthday in a humorous voice.

Obituaries Clarence J. Von Wahlde

Clarence J. Von Wahlde, age 94 of New Munich, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 31, 2017 at St. Benedict’s Senior Community in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday, June 7 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Derek Wiechmann officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Clarence Joseph Von Wahlde was born January 23, 1923 in Oak Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Bernard and Regina (Gieske) Von Wahlde. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 during World War II in the Philippine Islands. After the military, he worked in Greenland with North Atlantic Construction Company building the Air Force base. He then returned home and took over the family farm. On June 17, 1967, he married Dorine “Sis” Uphoff at

Elenor was born in Holdingford, MN to John & Victoria (Kociemba) Bieniek Sr. She married Cyril B. Budde on May 21, 1949 in Holdingford. She was a stay at home mother to her family of six. She loved to cook, bake,

Survivors include his siblings, Elsie Mergen of Albany, Irene Frevel of Sioux Falls, SD, Joe (Lorraine) Von Wahlde of St. Cloud, Rita Snyder of Denver, CO, and Eleanor (Tom) Thelen of Paynesville; and many nieces and nephews.

Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Dorine Von Wahlde on August 12, 2012; parents Ben and Regina Von Wahlde; sister, Marie B. Worms; niece, Linda Von Wahlde; and nephew, Dale Von Wahlde.

Serving as casket bearers were Ralph Mergen, Bob Frevel, Bill Frevel, Cary Thelen, Curt Thelen, and Tom Thelen.

Cross bearer was Jane Ryan and scripture bearer was Carl Thelen. Lector was Carl Thelen. Gift bearers were Lily Von Wahlde, Abby Thelen, and Mary Thelen. Eucharistic Ministers were Sister Margaret Maus, O.S.B. and Sister Alice Imdieke, O.S.B. Honorary bearers were St. Joseph’s Men’s Society.

A gathering of relatives and friends will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday evening at the Wenner Funeral Home, Richmond.

Church prayers will be at 7:45 p.m.

Jane F. Zirbes

Jane F. Zirbes, age 86 of Albany, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, June 5, 2017 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 9 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Cletus Connors, O.S.B. officiating. Entombment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m.

Jane Frances Athmann was born February 4, 1931 in Melrose, Minnesota to John and Olivia (Metzger) Athmann. She graduated from Melrose High School. On June 28, 1952, she married Kenneth Zirbes at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose.

Jane spent most of her life as a homemaker, but later in life, she helped her husband with the arts and crafts business for over 25 years. She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, Christian Mothers, Minnesota Teacher’s Association,

Prow. She met the love of her life on July 23, 1967 on a blind date and spent hours dancing in an outdoor theatre. This marks their “meetsaversary” which they were sure to celebrate every year. They married on October 4, 1968 in Redeemer Lutheran Church, St. Cloud, MN. Judy worked at Coon Rapids Medical Center for 20 years.

She enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, and garage sales. Judy loved entertaining and spending time with family.

Survivors include her husband, Delbert “Del” Christen; children, Ronette (Bob) Miller, Russell Christen; siblings, Richard Prow, Bernadine Prow, Ramona Boisvert, Urban Frank, Rita Nelson, Marcel Frank, Linda Kunkel; grandchildren, Stephen Donald (Libby) Miller, Reed Delbert Miller, and Hailie Christen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Joanne Calabrese and Ronald Prow.

Arrangements are with Wenner Funeral Home, Richmond.

and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 482. Jane was an avid reader and enjoyed painting. She also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, the Oregon Ducks, and keeping up with politics.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Zirbes on June 30, 2005; parents; an infant brother; nephews, Kenneth Williams and Terry Zirbes; in-laws, Leo and Amanda Zirbes and Ronnie (MaryAnn) Zirbes; son-in-law, Timothy Schaefer; and close friends, Tina, Kay, Kitty, and Jan. Serving as casket bearers will be Mark Steeves, Jamie Friedrichs, Ben Sorenson, Steve Sand, Matt Carlson, Mike Feldewerd, Cliff Zirbes, and John Williams. Cross bearer will be Beth Zirbes and scripture bearer will be Christine Friedrichs.

Honorary bearers will be Rosemary Brever, Joan and Pete Herges, Dennis Stalberger, and Rita Gasperlin.

Ronald E. Shodeen

R o n a l d Shodeen, age 77 resident of Upsala, MN, died Wednesday, May 31 at his home. A funeral service was held on Monday, June 5 at 2:00 P.M. at the Community Covenant Church in Upsala, MN with Pastor Rudy King officiating. Burial followed in the Parish Cemetery.

Ronald Elmer Shodeen was born on December 6, 1939 to Manfred and Lois (Stonewall) Shodeen. In 1958 Ronald graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis. He was united in marriage to Ruth Verkennis on October 14, 1961 at St. Francis Catholic Church. The couple lived in Minneapolis before moving to Maple Grove in 1969. Ronald worked at the Local 292 IBEW Electrical Union for 40 years. In

2003 the couple moved to Upsala to enjoy their retirement. They have wintered in Lake Havasu, AZ for the last 15 years. Ronald loved riding motorcycle and bringing his dog Rocky on Razor rides. He also liked hunting and driving his 1951 Ford. Ron was a “Mr. Fix-it” and was always willing to lend a helping hand to his family, friends, and neighbors. Ronald was a member of the National Rifle Association and the National Street Rod Association. He was in the Maple Grove Police Reserve for 15 years.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Ruth of Upsala; his son, Matthew Shodeen of Rice; daughters, Jeanne Olerud of Princeton and Amy (Christopher) Branca of Zimmerman; grandchildren, Ben Olerud, Katie Olerud, Chelsea Shodeen, Nick (Kristen) Shodeen, and Chad Shodeen; great-grandchild, Sawyer Olerud; brothers, Duane (Molly) Shodeen of Oakdale, and Larry (Chris) Shodeen of Burtrum.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Keith Shodeen.

Robert “Bob” J. Kleinart

Robert James Kleinart was born on August 15, 1928 in Redwood Falls to Louis and Elizabeth (Oranch) Kleinart.

Bob served his country in the United States Navy from 1945– 1951, during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Illinois in Chicago with a Doctorate of Optometry. He was married to Maxine and she passed away in 1992. Bob owned and operated his own Optometry practice, PBR Optical, in Springfield, MN for 45 years. He was married to Patricia Schmid on April 25, 1993. He loved the

outdoors and was an avid camper, spending the last 16 years at Whitebirch campground in Breezy Point. Bob loved cars, both vintage and new. He had a meticulously maintained lawn and flower beds. Bob also had a great love for animals. He was a true gentleman, a man of integrity and manners, who never aged.

Survivors include his wife Pat, of Avon; son and daughter, Britt (Joy) Kleinart of the Phillipines and Beth Kleinart of Willmar; stepdaughters, Andrea Crosby of Breezy Point and Stacy Styles of Mendota Heights; daughter in law, Sheryl Kleinart of Golden Valley; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Barry Kleinart; brothers, Walt and Joe Kleinart and sister in law, Ella Kleinart.

Funeral services were held June 3rd at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon.

Hildegard “Hilde” Bieniek The mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Hildegard “Hilde” Bieniek, age 80 of Holdingford will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 8 at the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwig in Holdingford, burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Hilde died at her home on Sunday.

Hilde was born May 3, 1937 in Harding.

Her parents moved to Grand Forks when she was young. Hilde lived for a short time in Minneapolis and moved to Holdingford

when she married George Bieniek on September 23, 1959. The two were married at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church. Hilde was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwig and the St. Hedwig Christian Mothers. She was very active in the church choir.

Hilde is survived by her husband, George in Holdingford; her children, Brenda (Allan) Dobis, Avon and Steve (Shannon Westgard) Bieniek, St. Cloud. She is also survived by her sister, Pat Smude, Grand Forks, ND; brother, Ray Smude, Larimore, ND; 5 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren (with one on the way!)

She is preceded in death by her parents,Valeria Matlock, John Smude, her sisters, Agnes Bauer, Lorraine Sorum and brother, Butch Smude.

Doris Ellen Smith

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 am, Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Long Prairie for Doris E. Smith, age 88 of Long Prairie who passed away Thursday at CentraCare Health Systems-Long Prairie. Fr. Kenneth Riedemann officiated and burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetey, Long Prairie.

Doris Ellen Keelin was born December 2, 1928 in Iroquois, South Dakota, the daughter of Lyle E. and Louise (Bensley) Keelin. She grew up and attended school in Huron, South Dakota, graduating in 1946.

She worked as a cashier at the JC Penney store in Huron. While working there she met her husband, a young salesman in the shoe department, Patrick E. Smith. They were married on August 14, 1950 in Huron. Their young family grew quickly including a set of twins and Doris soon found herself as a busy mother of 4 children under the age of 3 ½! Doris and Pat moved their family many times during their early marriage as Pat made his career with the JC Penney Company.

They lived in Colorado, Iowa, Fargo, Valley City, and then Brainerd where they raised their children and Doris was employed as a bookkeeper at the B&N Credit Union. In 1972 they moved to Long Prairie where they owned and operated Smith’s Department Store until retiring in 1990. The couple then spent more than 20 winters at their Arizona home in Apache Junction.

Her Christian faith was central to Doris’ life and before her illnesses she was an active volunteer at her church, St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie.

Doris loved to read and play bridge and she was an avid gardener, spending many hours working in her flower beds over the years.

She enjoyed small town life and its many connections with friends and neighbors.

Todd County Sheriff’s Dept.

June 1, 2017: At 22:27 the Todd County Sheriffs office responded to a car/deer crash on County Rd 104 near 321st Ave., Burtrum. The driver, Dylan Hollermann, struck the deer with his 2001 Ford Ranger. Minor damage and no injuries were reported in the crash.

June 5, 2017: At 10:15 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle accident on CO 12 east of CO 39. A pickup truck driven by Merle Grossman turned in front of a semi driven by Bruce Faust with the semi grazing the front of the truck. The truck received minor damage to it’s front bumper and the semi ended up in the south ditch of CO 12. The semi did not receive damage and was able to drive out of the ditch and from the scene. The pickup was also able to be driven from the scene. No one was injured in the accident.

When He is, it is a signal from Him that we are to search our lives to see what has separated us from Him. Isaiah said, “Your sins have hid His face from you, so that He will not hear you.” But with our confession comes His cleansing and the restoration of our communication.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson Recapping a successful 2017 Legislature

The Legislature has finished its work, having sent Gov. Mark Dayton a set of budget bills that will finance the state of Minnesota for the next two years.

The governor signed all 10 of those pieces of legislation, but he also did something that came as a complete surprise to me, in that he line-item vetoed funding for the House and Senate for the next four years. He did that to show his displeasure with several policy provisions contained in the various bills he signed, and to bring us back for yet another special session to deal with those items already put into law. I don’t think this type of action has been taken before, and the courts will have to determine if one branch of government can effectively shut down another.

This piece of news overshadowed the fact that agreement was reached to fund state government, and much good work had been done to reach accord on several difficult issues. For example, a new transportation bill was passed and signed into law, one that will provide significant new funding for our state’s roads and bridges. And it was done without raising the gas tax. It took some of the state’s surplus money, in addition to allocating sales taxes already being collected on items such as car repairs into the transportation fund. In taking general fund money and using it for road funding, we become the 34th state to do so. The nearly $1 billion bonding bill, the final piece of legislation passed, will also provide significant funding for roads and bridges. In total, this represents the largest transportation bill in the past 20 years and is the largest ever without an increase in the gas tax.

The tax bill also contains provisions that will benefit many residents of Minnesota. It contains the 40-percent state credit on agricultural land as it pertains to school capital referendums. Beginning next year in 2018, all current and new school building referendums will be affected by this legislation. This is the same

credit that was contained in last year’s tax bill, but was vetoed by the governor because of a one-word “mistake” in the bill.

This tax bill also contains relief for the owners of commercial property. Under this legislation, the first $100,000 in valuation will be exempt from the statewide property tax, which will greatly help owners of smaller commercial buildings all across the state. In addition, the automatic inflator that increased this tax every year has been eliminated.

Also included in the tax bill is relief for Social Security recipients up to certain income levels from the state income tax on those benefits. In addition, legislation I carried in the House on behalf of the city of Melrose is included. It contains a sales tax exemption and money for the city and building owners to recover from a devastating fire that destroyed part of a downtown block in the city last year.

The agriculture policy bill that came out of my committee was combined with the ag finance bill. It, too, was signed by the governor. Among its many provisions is one that will grant additional funding to local units of government for their efforts in the area of noxious weeds, with a particular eye of keeping the spread of a new invasive weed called Palmer ameranth in check.

We were not able to officially move back the enforcement dates for Minnesota’s buffer law. Public waters must have grass strips installed by November first of this year; however land owners can obtain an eight-month waiver so the work could be done next spring. It’s best to contact your local SWCD for more information on buffers and possible alternative practices.

It was another successful Stearns County Breakfast on the Farm last Saturday at the Kuechle Dairy between Eden Valley and Watkins. A half-inch rain the night before settled the dust as bus after bus brought folks out to the 200-plus cow operation. Congratulations and thanks to the Kuechle family for hosting the event.

Next year’s Breakfast on the Farm will be at the Vogt Dairy of Sauk Centre.

Grey Eagle City April 11, 2017 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joe Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 11th day of April 2017 in council chambers. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner and Bill Pohlmann. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guest George Minerich.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda with the following additions: stray cats and volleyball nets. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the March 14, 2017 meeting with the following change: page 1622, last paragraph, should read $200 to Central Minnesota Credit Union.

A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

George Minerich from the Minnesota Department of Health was present to update the Council on part one of the Wellhead Protection Plan. The purpose of the plan is to determine how safe the city well is from contamination. George provided the council with a map showing three zones. The red zone is the emergency response zone. In this area it takes about one year for the surface water to get to the well.

The blue zone is where the city drinking water supply comes from.

They could not find any connection linking lake water to city drinking water, and this area takes ten years travel time to reach the city well.

The yellow zone is considered the drinking water supply management protection area and this is the biggest area that is not within city jurisdiction.

George explained that the next part of the Wellhead Protection Plan would involve a management plan.

With the management plan, the city could qualify for up to $10,000 in grants from the Minnesota Department of Health for things such as sealing old wells, doing a test well to find an alternative well site for the city water supply, putting up a fence along the alley protecting the current city well from outside contaminants from snow removal, or any other items that may help protect the city water supply.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve Part I of the Wellhead Protection Plan and authorize the Clerk to sign a letter and submit it to the Hydrologist at the Minnesota Department of Health. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all mem-

bers voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Chico received three different quotes from Johnson Jet-Line for cleaning and/or televising the sewer mains. It was the consensus of the council to go with the four year maintenance plan which would involve one fourth of the city per year. However, the council wanted Chico to check with Johnson Jet-Line on what would happen if the sewer project would get done before the fourth year and report at the May meeting.

2. It was the consensus of the council to leave the water connect/ disconnect procedures the same with no changes at this time.

3. Discussion was held on whether or not to spray for weeds on the track at the old football field.

It was the consensus of the council not to spray the weeds but that they should continue to be cut down when mowing.

4. Discussion was held on street sweeping. MnDOT is scheduled to come in and do State Street (also known as Main Street) and the City of Sauk Centre will be contracted to sweep the remaining city streets.

5. Chico reported that they have been exercising the gate valves. The majority of them are clogged with mud and dirt. Chico will check with the City of Long Prairie to see what they use to clean out their gate valves.

6. Chico reported that he is looking into a battery back- up system for the SCADA system that would last a couple of hours. The current battery back- up only lasts long enough for the SCADA system computer to shut down. Chico will look into prices and options and report at the May meeting.

7. Tires and tubes have been put on the dock that will be placed out at Bass Lake. This dock should be installed over the next couple of weeks.

The council discussed the lawn spraying quote from Terrain Aesthetics. They will no longer be able to do the spraying without fertilizer. A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to contract for summer broadleaf and fertilizer and fall broadleaf and fertilizer at the rate of $173.78 per application with a 5% discount if both applications are pre-paid. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Clerk informed the council of a request by a family to plant Peony bushes on each side of a headstone at Lakeview Cemetery.

After reviewing the cemetery policy, it was the consensus of the council to deny the request.

with a quote to replace the aluminum body of the Rescue Rig that was damaged during the winter. The total cost of replacement of a new aluminum body quoted by Bayer Truck and Equipment is $36,985.00 with insurance reimbursement of $15,210.00. The difference will be paid for out of fire funds. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the quote from Bayer Truck and Equipment for $36,985.00 to replace the aluminum body of the Rescue Rig. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve Resolution No. 2017-13, A Resolution Accepting $5,000 Donation from the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club for the Fire Department Purchase of a Lucas Machine. A second was made

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the building permit application by Bill Pohlmann to build an 8’x16’ composite deck. The council discussed yard clean up around the city. The Clerk was instructed to send letters.

The council discussed stray cats within the city. Since the city does not license and/or regulate cats, the city has no control over them.

Thom Muellner requested that the volleyball nets be put up.

The Clerk was instructed to proceed with delinquent utilities as allowed by ordinance.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $748.26 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund, $101.26 from the General Fund of which $31.26 goes to the Water Fund and $70 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities, and $26,682.70 from the Central Minnesota Credit Union checking account to the First State Bank of Swanville checking account. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Swanville City May 2, 2017 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, May 2, 2017. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Jim Molitor, Norm Carlson and Tony Maciej Also present: Mark Hallen, and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, April 4, 2017 were reviewed. A motion was made by Deb Wood to approve the minutes as printed.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Deb Wood to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange presented to council resolution #17-0502 authorizing the sale of Lot 1, Block 2 North Berkey Avenue real property to Tim & Linda Dally. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to accept resolution #17-0502 to sell Lot 1, Block 2 North Berkey Avenue to Tim and Linda Dally. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Papers will be signed Mark Hallen, city engineer, was present to go over the bids that were received for the North Berkey Avenue improvements project.

There were eight bids received.

were recalculated for accuracy. The lowest bid received in the amount of $199,267.27 was from Breitbach Construction. After discussion, Tony Maciej made a motion to award the bid to Breitbach Construction. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Hallen stated a letter will be sent to the awarded company and all the other companies to let them know the results and thank them for their efforts and interests. MPCA permit application will be filled out and will be sent in.

The purchase amount and agreement/covenants for the six residential lots on North Berkey Avenue was revisited by council.

Council decided to sell a lot for $2000.00. This cost would include water and sewer hookup and water meter. The agreement will include a home must be built in one year from date of purchase and a declaration of covenants will be followed. Mayor Lange will confirm with the city attorney on the declaration of the agreement/covenants.

Resolution #17-0502b was presented to council for approval of a $200.00 donation from the Swanville Women’s Civic Club to be used toward the purchase of flowers on main street. Tony Maciej made a motion to accept the donation. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor and thanked the Women’s Civic Club for their donation.

Reminder City Wide Cleanup day is Saturday, May 6. All council members are asked to be present.

Should I Go Live? - By John Young Facebook Live has been around now for just over a year. This is the ability for businesses and every day Facebook users to stream live from their location (depending on the internet connection) in real time and engage viewers.

If you haven’t tried Facebook Live yet, we will cover a few tips to make it a successful broadcast for your channel or profile!

Live streaming from Facebook can be started from your computer (desktop) or your mobile device. On your mobile devices, you can stream from the Pages app (which allows you to broadcast to your business page) or from the Facebook app. In this article we will just look at the personal profile streaming method but the method is similar on the Pages app for a business.

A few things before we get into the streaming process. Live streaming video eats up data! You will eat up approximately 10 mb per minute on the Pages streaming app, and about 17 mb per minute on the Facebook app. So, if you would be streaming a 10 minute video, you would use about 175 megabytes on a stream to your profile. Your 1 gigabyte of data package will give you just under an hour of live streaming on the Facebook app. There is also a 90 minute limit on the length of your stream on all Facebook Live streams.

The process is relatively easy on streaming from the Facebook app. When you first start the app, near the top you have the area in which you would type up a status update or post a photo. On the latest version of the Facebook app, on the left below where you would type in your message is the red camera with a ‘Live’ next to it. The first step is to click on that live button to activate the camera and start the process.

On the next window you see, you will have a live camera view with the ability to add some overlays or filters in the upper left. On the upper right, there is a button to brighten the screen or turn on the rear light for lower light streaming and then a two arrows button that switches between the front and rear cameras.

You will see your profile picture on the lower left, with one touch menu (you touch it to change it) saying ‘Public’ and a second touch menu that mentions notifications on. Notifications is for the times you have followers to your personal page that want to be notified when you live stream. The ‘Public’ touch menu is one you might use. From this area, you can choose who will be able to see your video. Once you click on this, a new window opens up and allows you to have the video only available to your friends, or you can limit the video availability to only people that you choose. I have one group I have made on Facebook that is just my family and I can choose just that group to see a live stream of our children in action or something that I don’t want out for the general public to see.

Right below the touch menus is the Describe Your Live Video area. Here, you could type in a few words on what you are showing your viewers. In the business streams, we want to be sure to have more info here so it would entice people to watch. For a private, family video, maybe a word or two would be all that is needed.

Finally, at the very bottom of the screen, you have the tag for tagging people in the video (or people you want to see this video), you can check in to set the location where the video was shot, and you can add a feeling/emoji to your video. One recent addition that is available on some devices is a donation button to ask for donations.

The last button on the screen is the blue ‘go live’. Once you click that, it will make contact with the Facebook Live server and give you a 3 second count in for the video. Once the countdown hits zero.. you are now LIVE! A few more thoughts: 1. Decide if you want to go vertical or horizontal with your device. If you are doing a single person shot where you are talking to the camera, then go vertical so only your face and torso are in the shot. If you are doing ANYTHING else (especially where you are showing some scenery or action) turn the phone sideways to get a horizontal video.

2. Sound: Most newer devices have decent microphones for capturing audio.

If you are doing an outdoor event and talking over the event, you might want to use a decent plug in headset or a nice plug in lapel microphone. If you have watched some of our Hometown News live streams, you probably observed how a lapel microphone can help cut wind noise and give a better voice over.

3. Hold the camera still and move it slowly. This is something even I forget.

In the excitement of the event, you will sometimes be moving back and forth

so fast viewers will get dizzy or motion sick. Slow, steady movements that follow and capture the story are best!

4. If you are streaming for any length of time, consider a selfie stick or a tripod for a steady video.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, When you use the envelope system, what should you do with any leftover money?

-Mandy Dear Mandy, M y suggestion would be to carry it over to the next month. Lots of folks don’t use all the money in their clothing envelope during a month. There’s nothing wrong with letting a little extra build up in one of your categories if you don’t spend it all in a given month or two.

You should be hitting the budget pretty close each month on categories like food. Getting out of debt and managing your money wisely doesn’t mean going hungry. If you do end up with a little left over in the food envelope, treat yourself to a nice dinner out, or buy something that’s food-oriented.

But it’s okay to carry a few categories over from month to month.

Just make sure you don’t get crazy and blow that money on something outside the intended category, or on stuff you really don’t need.

Would it be a good idea to cash out the stock and roll it into an IRA?

-Dylan Dear Dylan, Technically, you wouldn’t be rolling it into an IRA. You would cash it out and use the money to establish a Roth IRA. And yes, I would do that.

It was very kind of your grandparents to buy you a gift like this, but I think you can do better. You didn’t mention an amount, but let’s say you’ve got $10,000 in that company’s stock. Now, would you buy the stock if you had $10,000 sitting on the table? Most people, myself included, would say no because there’s too much risk. I wouldn’t advise having the majority of your wealth — the highest percentage of your net worth — tied up in one single company. That’s bad news.

So yes, I would sell that stock and use the money to fund a Roth IRA or multiple Roth IRAs. I invest my Roth IRA money in mutual funds that have a solid track record of outperforming the S&P 500 for 10 years or longer.
