Red, white and true blue -By Harvey Mackay June 14 is Flag Day, celebrating the 13 stripes and the 50 stars that symbolize our humble beginnings and our growth into one unified nation.

On June 14, 1777, in Philadelphia, the Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress adopted a resolution that read the following: “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation.”

But the resolution never said a word about the significance behind the choice of red, white and blue – because the three colors did not have any official meaning

when the flag was adopted in 1777.

But have you ever stopped to think about the meaning of the flag’s colors?

There’s plenty of symbolism there too.

Red implies hardiness and valor. White stands for purity and innocence. Blue signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice. These qualities that our country was founded on should carry through in our lives and businesses today.

According to an article on Time. com, Mike Buss, a flag expert with the American Legion, says that the most obvious reason for the flag’s colors is that they were simply taken from our mother country’s flag – the Union Jack of England. “Our heritage does come from Great Britain, and that was some of the thought process that went about in coming up with our flag,” Buss says of the American flag’s red, white and blue.

“They come from the three colors that the Founding Fathers had served under or had been exposed to.”

behind the flag’s red, white and blue, flag expert Buss is not concerned. Instead, he believes the flag’s power to evoke patriotism and pride after all these years is most important.

I think it’s also important to connect how these colors relate to our working lives.

RED: Hardiness and valor stand for the ability to endure difficult conditions; determination in facing great danger; courage and bravery.

Determination keeps people hammering away. Determined people possess the stamina and courage to pursue their ambitions despite criticism, ridicule or unfavorable circumstances.

In fact, discouragement usually spurs them on to greater things. When they get discouraged, they recognize that in order to change their results, some change is in order.

Courage is regarded as one of the major human virtues. Courage is bravery, valor, standing up to danger, guts and nerve all rolled into one. It’s easy to be ordinary. Courage is what sets us apart from the crowd.

WHITE: Purity and innocence are synonymous. They stand for freedom from moral wrong and simplicity.

Those are tall orders in our complicated world, but worth striving for. Way back in 1872, Missouri Senator Carl Schurz paraphrased naval hero Stephen Decatur with these patriotic words: “Our country, right or wrong. When right, to be kept Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cows

Cows were responsible for the continuing monthly income on the farm.

Although the price of the can milk was less than $3.00 per 100 pounds and the cows only gave about 25 to 35 pounds of milk per day on a yearly average, they were the common revenue producing part of central Minnesota farming. The heard sizes averaged from 10 cows to 20 cows on the bigger farms. Milking was previously done by hand milking and that limited the cow numbers, along with the barn sizes, which had been built to house the expected low cow population.

Early farmers were required to maintain a much closer physical contact with the cows. This created a greater injury possibility to the humans who were near the cows. Cows step on the human’s feet, kick the milking person, kick at someone who comes near them and will bump someone with their heads, if the cow is having a bad day. I vividly remember a wet manure soaked tail slapping around my head, maybe it was a show of affection?

The most dangerous part of cows was the bull. They frequently reached about a ton in size and sometimes, for no apparent reason, they became violent.

Many farm families experienced a loss or serious injury to a family member as a result of injuries from a bull. Before the time of artificial breeding, a farm had to have a bull to maintain the milking production and herd population on the farm.

Farmers created a couple of common methods to reduce the possible injury from a cow kicking. Prior to milking a cow that liked to kick, the farmer put a pair of “kickers” on the cow. This was a pair of shackles joined together by a chain. They were fitted to the back legs and when the cow did a gentle kick, the chain attached to the other leg, stopped the kicking motion. give a really serious kick, the kickers would jerk the other leg hard enough to cause the cow to quickly fall on her “behind.” This method usually sent a message to the cow that kicking made her hurt and she stopped doing that. The other popular method to stop kicking was to tie the cows tail as high as possible to a beam above the cows tail.

Now her ability to kick is hampered, because she physically can’t kick when her tail is extended upward.

After the harvest is completed it was a common practice to allow the cows to graze on the harvested field. Since this was a temporary happening, no fences were created. The herd needed to be watched, so they didn’t wander into an area where they weren’t allowed. This herding job was usually done by the farm kids. If two kids were doing the herding, it was fun. They filled the time with exploration, resting and serious conversation. If one kid did the job it became really boring, really fast.

When the herd was small, we became familiar and named each cow, compared to today’s dairy farm with hundreds of cows, which only represent a production number.

right; when wrong, to be put right.” That sentiment is purity at its best.

Sen. Schurz would settle for nothing less than the best for his country.

Similarly, we should demand the best of our businesses. Doing things right should be a way of life.

BLUE: Vigilance, perseverance and justice are self-explanatory. Justice translates to fair play, honesty and integrity.

Perseverance separates the winners from the losers. Success in life depends on your willingness to never give up, even when the reward is delayed.

Honesty, ethics, integrity – in my estimation, you can interchange them, because they all convey the single attribute that determines whether a person or an organization can be trusted.

Honesty is always the best policy. You must be able to trust the people with whom you work. Doing the right thing is never the wrong thing to do.

Integrity: either you have it or you don’t. It’s not something that you can have one day and not the next. Integrity begins at the top. As leaders we must set the example – that alone inspires employees to do right. We must live by it in all we do, starting in the corner offices

and promoted and expected throughout the organization, ensuring integrity is first and foremost in our decision-making.

Enduring leaders know that the numbers will be better if integrity is not optional.

Obituaries Duane J. Albers

A prayers service was held Friday, June 1, 2018 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon, MN for Duane John Albers, age 82 of Avon. He died on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at the Paynesville Hospital. The Reverend Gregory Miller, OSB conducted the prayer service.

Duane was born on August 16, 1935 in St. Cloud the son of John and Elizabeth (Roske) Albers. He grew up in St. Cloud graduating from Cathedral High School in 1952. He joined the Sheet Metal Trades Union and work 42 years in the HVAC industry in the St. Cloud area.

He was united in marriage to Patricia A. Hennemann at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waite Park on October 19, 1957. Six children were born to this union. They made their home in St. Cloud until 1968 when they moved to Avon, MN. After Patricia died on July 11, 2001, Duane continued to

F u n e r a l Services were held Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Albany for LaVerne E. Cigelske, age 82, who passed away Monday.

LaVerne was born on September 11, 1935 in Collegeville Township to Adolf and Olive (Lemke) Cigelske. LaVerne served in the Army from 1958-1964. He married the love of his life, LaVerne Bloch, on October 8, 1960 at Holy Cross in Saint Cloud. LaVerne was a tough, strong man who enjoyed order. He was a passionate man who deeply cared for everyone, especially his wife. LaVerne could fix anything and appreciated cabinetry. He worked as a carpenter for Kraus- Anderson and later as a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed family snowmobiling trips, traveling, attending his great grandson’s baseball games,

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Hunter Thomas Albers; one sister, Joan and her husband, Jerome Beckers; and brothersin-law, John Hennemann and LaVern Castonguay; and sister-in-law, Sherry Hennemann.

He is survived by his children, James (Kathryn) Albers of Cold Spring, Sandy Staneart of Avon, Patricia (Clary) Frie of Avon, Ronald (Eve) Albers Salt Point, NY, Thomas Albers of Avon, and Kristine (Kurt) Krebs of Cold Spring; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his brother and sisters, John Albers of Minneapolis, Karen (Bill) Harris of Colorado, and Betsy (Nick) Picciano of Sauk Rapids; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

LaVerne had many passions, but none could equal the deep love he felt for his wife, and best friend, LaVerne, and their 3 children, 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

M a s s of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale for Lorraine M. Jarnot, age 88 of Elmdale who passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Arlington Place in St. Joseph. Reverend Jeremy Theis and Reverend Robert Rolfes officiated. Burial took place at the parish cemetery.

Lorraine was born on September 22, 1929 in Bowlus, Minnesota to Joseph and Catherine (Opatz) Maciej. She married Louis E. Jarnot on November 10, 1953 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale. The couple owned and operated Jarnot Repair.

She later was employed for Viking Water

Services for Joseph Ohmann, age 84 of Albany, will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, June 7, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Burial with full military honors will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls at 2:00.

Joe died on Thursday, May 31st. There will be a visitation after 9:30 AM Thursday at the church.

Joe was born May 24, 1934 in Albany to Nicholas and Lucy (Dinndorf) Ohmann.

After he graduated from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954, and served as Chief Air Traffic Controller, until his retirement in 1977. Joe and his family spent most of his career in Germany. He married Lieselotte Benseler in Kassel, Germany on June 19, 1957. They had two children, Liz and Jerome. After retiring from the Air Force, Joe and Lotti moved to Albany where they owned and operated

Lorraine enjoyed gardening and her flowers, camping, cooking and baking. She took pride in her lawn. Lorraine looked forward to deer hunting weekend when the boys would come and stay at the house. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Lorraine is survived by her children, Harvey (Renee) of St. Cloud, Janice (Leroy) Hanisch of St. Augusta, Duane “Duke” (Lori) of Rice; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters, Bernadine (Donald) Bartkowicz and Florence (Ray) Kurowski; brother, Clarence (Virginia) Maciej all of Bowlus.

Joyce Olson

Services celebrating the life of Joyce Olson, age 67 of Holdingford, was held Wednesday, June 6th at the Community Country Church in Holdingford. A private burial was in the Highland Cemetery in Holdingford. Joyce died at her home with her family around her bed after a long battle with cancer.

Joyce was born September 5, 1950 in Minot, ND to Charles and Evelyn (Howe) Olson. She grew up in Minot and then moved

to Holdingford. She worked for Fingerhut and then the Holdingford School District. She was also very active in her church and with the Pedals to Petals Garden Club in Holdingford.

Joyce enjoyed doing volunteer work for others in her community.

Joyce is survived by her brothers and sisters, Imogene (Derry) Crouch, England; Ruthe (Mike) Odden, Holdingford; Dorothy Olson, Arizona; Don (Sandee) Olson, Ohio; Robert Olson, Washington; Ron (Taryce) Olson, North Dakota and Pete (Jan) Olson, Arizona.

She is also survived by 23 nieces and nephews and 40 grandnieces and grandnephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Kenneth Olson, Chuck Olson and sister, Marian Geiser.

Our German, Dutch, and Swiss immigrant ancestors homesteaded in these areas in the mid-late 1800s.

Highway 238 in Albany closes as project begins June 11 Motorists who travel Highway 238 in Albany will encounter a detour and delays after a short segment of the road, between Railroad Avenue and the southeast side of North Lake, closes after 5 a.m. Monday, June 11.

Motorists should plan additional time for travel, and follow the short detour along County Road 53/Sixth Street and Soo Line Avenue.

All lanes of Highway 238 are scheduled to open by mid-September.

The closure and detour are needed as part of a project to reconstruct about one-half mile of Highway 238, install new underground utilities and improve pedestrian infrastructure.

Coaches’ Comments: “Emily Beseman is my choice for Athlete of the Month. Emily is a leader on and off the field. She is always wanting to play and is always encouraging others on the field. She is the leadoff batter and currently leads the team in batting average. She has the most steals on the team. This year Emily decided to try pitching although her favorite position is shortstop. She has done a great job pitching and averages around 5 strikeouts a game. Emily has a great attitude and is very smart on the field.

Dear Ben, Congratulations! I’m glad you realize the importance of being responsible with your money and planning for things down the road.

There are three or four important things a recent college graduate — or anyone, really — can do to make the most of their money and protect themselves financially. The first is to always live on budget. When you write down a budget on paper, and give every dollar a name before the month begins, it helps you know what your money is doing instead of leaving you in a situation where you’re wondering where it went.

Two more important practices are saving money and staying out of debt.

Your income is your biggest wealthbuilding tool. When you’re saddled with debt, your money goes to creditors instead of into your pocket. Saving money prepares you for all the things life will throw at you — both good and bad.

One more thing I’d include is investing. I know you’re young, but you still need to think about life after retirement. If you start investing just a little bit each month now in good mutual funds, you could easily retire a millionaire.

These are all very simple, basic things, Ben. But they’ll make a huge difference in your financial situation now and in the years to come!

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson Summer Reading Program to begin

Vetoes hard to swallow, yet other good bills were enacted

It wasn’t the ending of our legislative session that I would have chosen. Gov. Dayton vetoed two major bills, one that pertained to supplemental spending and the other regarding taxes. The tax bill, especially, would have been good for Minnesota, and its veto will cause higher taxes for many of us next year, along with additional challenges when filing our returns.

The reason is because of changes made at the federal level in a major piece of legislation signed into law in Washington, D.C., last year. With the governor’s veto, we will not be conforming to any of the federal changes, with the result being complications in dealing with two sets of tax instructions that don’t match up very well.

We were warned about this possible situation early in the session, and the goal was to come up with a bill addressing it. We did that, with not only one tax bill being sent to the governor, but two. After receiving the first, he said he wouldn’t sign tax reform until school districts received what he called “emergency funding.” Well, the second tax bill contained that funding, $50 million in new money and additional dollars in the form of expanded uses for other categories of funding.

By not signing that bill, I think the people of Minnesota were hurt. On balance and through compromise, the bill did some very good things, including full conformity with federal Section 179 depreciation and the actual lowering of two tax brackets. Utilizing just these provisions alone, most residents would have seen their state tax bill decrease.

Along with his vetoes, the governor announced that there would be no special session. Then, he left the door open slightly by saying he might call a “lame duck” session after the November election. But, even if we came back then to work on another tax bill, it would be difficult to update software and other provisions in time for the next tax season. As one member said, without this conformity bill, the tax manual for next year could be nearly as thick as a Minneapolis phone book.

Also part of the vetoed tax bill was an extension of the fire remediation grant for the city of Melrose. Language in the bill

would have provided a one-year extension of the nearly $1.4 million grant, along with a sales tax exemption for materials used in the reconstruction of the site in downtown Melrose. This will need to be addressed in a possible special session or immediately after the Legislature returns next January.

On the positive side, there were two major bills that actually got signed. One was the pension bill, which made needed changes in several state pensions to increase their funding levels. The legislation removes early retirement subsidies and reforms post-retirement COLAs. Some of the pension plans affected were the MSRS General, Correctional, and State Patrol, along with PERA Police and Fire and TRA. In nearly all cases, the contribution levels of both employee and employer are increased over time.

It was also good to see the bonding bill signed into law. It contained $825 million in general obligation bonds, along with additional funding from the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, better known as LCCMR. That’s where the Alexandria Lakes Area Sanitary District will receive a $600,000 grant to work on phosphorus reduction in lakes Winona and Agnes. If this research proves successful, it could save the district from a $14 million upgrade to their treatment plant to reach those reduction levels.

Also part of the bonding bill was an increase in truck highway bonding. Among the projects approved for funding was a $10.5 million rail grade separation project in Pope County. The location is north of Glenwood at the intersection of state highways 29 and 55 and the main line of the Canadian Pacific railroad. In talking with staff at the MnDOT district office in Detroit Lakes, the first step in the construction of an overpass is to appoint a project manager and then work on design and engineering. A preliminary estimate would have bidding for the project done in the fall of 2020 with construction to start sometime after that.

Grey Eagle City April 10, 2018 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joe Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 10th day of April 2018 in council chambers. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Bryan Bye, Matt Zinniel, Steve Neville and Russ Achman.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Steve Neville was in attendance to discuss a building permit application to install a gas cylinder storage to extend approximately eighteen inches into the sidewalk on the east side of the hardware store and to remove tar on the west side of the hardware store from the apartment and cement entire area to the alley. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve a building permit for a gas cylinder storage and install cement from the apartment to the alley on the west side of the building for Neville Hardware. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Bryan Bye was in attendance to discuss the sewer rehabilitation project. One of the items for council consideration is the proposed storm sewer along County Road 33 from Spruce Street south to 130th Street. Installing storm sewer out to 130th Street would cost approximately $175,000 more for the city portion of the joint project with Todd County. The council discussed other options for handling storm sewer through this section without significantly increasing the cost of the project.

Bryan will check with Loren Fellbaum from the Todd County Highway Department to see what other options might be considered.

Bryan also discussed the possibility of purchasing property to move the west lift station into city limits. This would eliminate the need for some of the manholes that currently are between city limits and the west lift station. Easements would need to be obtained for sewer mains to be installed on the south side of State 287 directly to the ponds. The other option is to leave the west lift station where it currently is but easements would need to be obtained as installation of sewer main would be outside

of road right-of-way. The council will look into the possibility of easements and discuss at the May meeting.

Jim Tschida was in attendance to let the council know that he would not be able to get his addition and deck built until July or August. He would still get the cement along the driveway done.

Jim is seeking permission to remove the trees along the boulevard and plant two new ones in their place. He stated that these trees are leaning and he is concerned that they may break and damage his house. A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to allow the trees to be removed in the boulevard with two trees to be planted in their place. The street would need to be blocked off while the trees are being removed.

Undercut Tree Care & Removal will provide a certificate of liability insurance before work can begin. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote council members Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp voted in favor.

Mayor Joe Arnzen voted against.

Leaf and brush pick up is scheduled for Friday, May 4th.

Leaves must be bagged and only small bundles of twigs and branches will be accepted.

An estimate was received from Levin Electric for the broken street light by Eagle Auto for $5,650. The individual who damaged the street pole submitted it to their insurance and a check will be issued to the city for the damages.

The Clerk reminded the council that the Board of Equalization meeting for the City of Grey Eagle will be held Thursday, April 12th at 1:00 p.m. A quorum is needed for this meeting. Also, one member of the council in attendance must have completed the training for this meeting.

The council discussed the city sign on the billboard by the Rock Tavern. The council will take a look at the sign and discuss at the May meeting.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the ROW Excavation Permit for Arvig to directional bore from the fiber vault behind the hardware store, set up a pedestal in the alleyway behind the funeral home/library and burying a fiber drop to the library at a depth of five feet. A second was made

The Clerk informed the Council that the August meeting date will need to be changed due to Primary Elections being held.

The council will address this at the May meeting.

The council discussed the need to have American Door Works come in and service the Fire Hall door openers and install some antennas so that the doors can be closed when the fire/rescue equipment leave the building.

Lori Hellmann, Clerk Grey Eagle City Board of Equalization Meeting April 12, 2018 The Board of Equalization meeting for the City of Grey Eagle was called to order by Mayor Joe Arnzen at 1:00 p.m. on the 12th day of April 2018 in council chambers. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner, Brian Hollenkamp and Bill Pohlmann. There were no council members absent.

Also in attendance were Lori Hellmann and guests Amy Ebnet and Laura Winter.

The Clerk provided the council an email from Romie Gessell questioning the value on his property.

Romie stated that the shed that was moved onto a new location on the property is smaller in size, has no cement floor, is not insulated and has no water and sewer. Amy and Laura explained that the previous years’ valuation on the shed that was moved was valued as unfinished. The cur-
