There’s no substitute for integrity -By Harvey Mackay

A father who had been laid off from his job had been watching expenses closely for months.

But he’d made a promise to his two sons - twins - that he’d take them to a nearby amusement park to celebrate their 10th birthday.

When the day came, the father withdrew some money from his savings, and he took his two sons on the bus to the amusement park. When they reached the front gate, he saw a sign: “General admission: (ages 10 and up) $10. Children under 10: $5.”

If he’d come a day earlier, the father realized, he could have saved $10-$5 for each of his twin sons. But with a sigh he led the boys up to the ticket window and said, “Three general admission tickets, please.”

The woman in the booth looked them over and smiled.

“How old are you boys?”

“I’m 10 years old today,” said one

son.

“So am I,” said the other. “We’re twins!”

The woman leaned forward. “You know,” she whispered, “you could have asked for two ‘Under 10’ tickets, and I never would have known.”

“Yeah,” said the father, “but they would have.”

Why do so many executives and employees apparently go along with blatantly unethical and illegal conduct in their organizations? The answer may be that people don’t always know what to do when confronted with requests (or demands) that aren’t on the straight and narrow. But that’s not a good enough answer. Organizations need to be completely clear and specific about what is acceptable and what is expected.

Here are some suggestions on how to respond when someone in your organization asks you to do something unethical: • Explain your concern. Tell the other person how you feel. Use “I” statements that describe your position without attacking the other person: “I have some reservations about that plan because . . . “ • Offer an alternative. Chances are

there’s an honest way to accomplish the same goal or a similar one. Concentrate on that, emphasizing your common interests: “We both want to make more money on this product, and I think we can do it better by cutting some less-important features than by using cheaper materials.”

• Go upstairs if necessary. This should be a last resort, but if the other person insists on behaving unethically, you’ll have to protect the company - and yourself - by discussing the matter over with a trusted superior.

Careful hiring can often help avoid problems from the outset. I have found a very reliable method that we use at MackayMitchell Envelope Company to supplement our usual background screening process called the Merchants Integrity Test, developed by Merchants Information Solutions. The Merchants Integrity Test will help you reduce the number of criminal records you are required to review under the new EEOC guidelines. Using this test will speed up the hiring process and keep you in compliance, without reducing the scope of your candidate review.

Obituaries Bentley Nguyen

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Bentley Nguyen, age 15 months, of Holdingford, will be 11:00 AM Thursday, June 7 at the All Saints, St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Bentley died unexpectedly Thursday. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM, June 7 at the Miller-Carlin-Brenny Funeral Home in Holdingford.

Bentley was always a happy boy who brought joy to the people who love him the most. He loved the outdoors, fishing, picking rocks, watching birds and playing catch. He will always be loved and never forgotten.

Bentley was born March 9, 2011 in St. Cloud to Tony Nguyen and Amanda Czech.

He lived in Holdingford with his parents.

Along with his parents, he is survived by his sisters; Veda and Sienna Nguyen, St. Cloud and his grandparents, Virgil and Sheila Czech, Holdingford and Dung T. Nguyen, St. Cloud and Haire Bounkhamprasong, St. Cloud; his great-grandparents, Ted Czech, Holdingford and Marie Heitzman, Albany.

He is also survived by uncles and aunts; Peter (Angie) Czech, Hutchinson; Amy (John) Pilarski, Holdingford, Joseph (Jackie Bloch) Czech, St. Anna; Michael Nguyen, St. Cloud; Adam Nguyen, St. Cloud; Justin Nguyen, St. Cloud; Brandon Nguyen, St. Cloud and Rachel Nguyen, St. Cloud; his cousins, William, Wyatt and Ella Pilarski, Holdingford; Amber, Zoey and Caleb Czech, Hutchinson.

He is preceded in death by his greatgrandma, Irene Czech, great-grandpa, Fred Heitzman and cousin, Terri Soltis.

Bertha Henrietta Lang The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Bertha Henrietta Lang, age 90 of Albany, was held Wednesday, June 6, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Burial followed in the parish cemetery. Bertha died peacefully on Friday, June 1, 2012, surrounded by her family.

Bertha was born March 26, 1922 in St. Anthony to Frank and Laura (Gresser) Habermann. She married John Lang on May 21, 1941 in St. Anthony. She and John farmed together until moving to Albany in 1974. Bertha was a woman whose universe consisted of unconditional love for her family and friends. She enjoyed playing cards, going fishing, traveling, dancing, visiting and baking, especially her famous Grandma 320-547-0050

buns. She was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Seven Dolors Christian Mothers, Seven Dolors church choir, Little Flower Mission Group, St. Ann’s Society and the Albany American Legion Auxiliary.

Bertha is survived by her chidren, James (Louanne) Lang, Redding, CT; Robert (Audrey) Lang, Avon; Bernadette “Bernie” (Dennis) Schiffler, Waite Park; Joseph (Barb) Lang, Avon; Terrance (Denise) Lang, Woodbury; Daniel (Cindy) Lang; Champlin; Jane (Al) Hager, Champlin; Timothy (Paula) Lang, Ham Lake; Judith (Lee) Bills, Ham Lake; Lisa (Chad) Burton, Rogers; sonin-law, Jim Crocker, Brooklyn Center, 38 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sisters and brother, Delores Ramler, Albany; Lucille (Ralph) Goenner, Clear Lake; and Donald Habermann, PA. Bertha is preceded in death by her parents, her husband John in 1993, her daughter, Mary Lou Crocker in 1995, her grandson, John Lang, her brother, Herbert Habermann, an infant brother, Norbert Habermann, and her daughter-in-law, Mary Lang.

Anthony B. “Tony” Ellering, age 83 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, June 4, 2012 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Anthony Bernard Ellering was born April 9, 1929 in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Alphonse and Elizabeth (Welle) Ellering. On June 6, 1950 he married Mary Margaret Gross at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on June 6. The couple farmed in the Greenwald area for 36 years. After farming, Tony and Mary moved to Melrose to enjoy retirement. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in

Melrose, St. Michael’s Men’s Society of Greenwald, and the Knights of Columbus, Council 1633.

Tony enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Ellering of Melrose; children, Mark (Janice) Ellering of St. Cloud, Michael (Joan) Ellering of Greenwald, Antoinette (Ned) Evens of Tomball, TX, Daniel (Norma) Ellering of Sauk Centre, David (Mary) Ellering of St. Cloud, Anthony “Tony” Ellering of St. Cloud, and Jeff (Michelle) Ellering of Columbia Heights; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother, Ann (Mel) Roehrl of Melrose, Al (Carlyn) Ellering of Melrose and Mary (Vern) Jacobs of Melrose.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Joseph Ellering.

Serving as casket bearers will be Tony’s sons, Mark, Michael, Daniel, David, Anthony, and Jeff. Cross bearer will be Tony’s daughter, Antoinette Evens and scripture bearer will be Michael Gross.

Mass servers will be Gabe Ellering and Chloe Ellering. Gift bearers will be Michael Gross, June Domine and Deb Duclos.

Readers will be Patrick Ellering and Ben Ellering. Eucharistic Minister will be Jen Ellering.

Frances Elizabeth Fuchs Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30am on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at St. Benedict’s Church in Avon for Frances Elizabeth Fuchs, 98, of Albany who died Sunday, June 3 at Mother of Mercy in Albany. Rev. Blaine Wasnie, OSB, will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends and relatives may call one hour prior to mass on Thursday at the church.

Frances was born on April 25, 1914 to Matthias and Wilhelmina (Hollenkamp) Thielen in St. Rosa. She married Edmund Fuchs on November 19, 1940 in St. Rosa.

Frances was a homemaker who enjoyed working in her garden and canning. She also loved to sew and bake, winning many blue

ribbons at the county and state fair for her baking. The last year and a half, Frances also enjoyed living at Mother of Mercy.

Frances is survived by her children; Ervin (Renee) of Farmington, Ralph (Cecelia) of Greenville, PA; grandchildren, Ralph Jr. (Kelly), Angie (Jeremy) Gaus, Lurleen (Drew) Fernholz, Lisa Fuchs; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund, on November 26, 1980; siblings, Magdalena Zwack, Mary Thielen, Katherine Gelking, Joseph Thielen, Fredericka Thielen, Henry Thielen, Anna Berndt and Loretta Thielen.

Vera L. Kuehne

Vera L. Kuehne, 92 year old resident of Burtrum, MN passed away Sunday, June 3, 2012 at her son’s home in Gill, CO. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle, MN with Rev. Ronald Tibetts officiating. Burial will take place in Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum, MN. Friends may call from 4-7 P.M. on Friday and from 10-11 A.M. on Saturday at the Church in Grey Eagle, MN. Vera Lavonne (Raatz) Kuehne was born November 17, 1919 in Westgate, Iowa to Frank and Stella (Shafer) Raatz. Her father had a butcher shop in Westgate, while her mother managed the Raatz Restaurant. She enjoyed living near her Shafer and Raatz relatives and was especially close to her grandfather, Henry Shafer. She started school in Westgate, IA but her family moved to Minnesota when she was age 9. They first lived on the Bundy farm where she attended school at District #94. The family then moved to a farm just north of Burtrum where she attended school and graduated from Burtrum High School.

Vera met her future husband, Edmund F. Kuehne when he went to work for her father in 1938 and on August 6, 1939 they were

married at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Long Prairie Township. They first lived near Little Falls where Ed worked on the highway, then they moved to the August Dehn farm where they co-farmed with his brother Hugo.

In 1941 they bought their own farm about halfway between Burtrum and Swanville.

Because of her health, they moved for the winter to San Bernardino, California in 1949. They followed with one more winter trip to California before they moved there permanently in 1954.

In 1966 they returned to Minnesota, again taking up farming. She loved taking care of the calves and called them her babies.

After retirement they lived for several years on the south edge of Burtrum, where Vera remained after Ed died in 1991. Vera enjoyed gardening and most anyone who visited could go home with something fresh from her garden. She is also well known for remembering the birthdays of her family, nieces and nephews. In the fall of 2011 Vera moved with her youngest son to Colorado after living in the Senior apartments in Grey Eagle for a year. Here she remained until her death on June 3, 2012.

She leaves her children: Judy (George) Smith of Aurora, CO; Douglas (Doris) Kuehne of Avon, MN, Richard (Christine) Kuehne of Gill, CO and Barbara (Steven) Anderson of Shafer, MN to grieve her loss, as well as numerous grand and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.

Funeral arrangements are with the Shelley-Gibson Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN.

Lorraine Ida Mae Evens F u n e r a l services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, June 8, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in St. Joseph, MN for Lorraine Ida Mae Evens age 82 of Albany, MN formerly of St. Joseph, MN who died on Monday, June 4, 2012 at the Albany Hospital in Albany, MN. The Reverend Eberhard Schefers will be the celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 7, 2012 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., and 1 hour prior to the services both at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Joseph. St. Joseph’s Parish prayers will be at 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Lorraine was born on June 28, 1929 the daughter of Victor and Mary (Gill) Bovy at St. Joseph, MN. She was a long-time resident of St. Joseph where she worked for the College of St. Benedict in housekeeping for 18 years, retiring in 1992.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Council of Catholic Women, both in St. Joseph.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one son, Alvin in 1990 one grandson, Chad in 1995 and two sisters, Marie Salzer and Hildegard Ertl.

She is survived by her five children, Orville (Margie) Evens of Avon, Shirley (Mel) Walz of St. Cloud, David Evens of St. Cloud, Kevin (JoAnn) Evens of St. Joseph, and Floyd (Gwen) Evens of Canby, 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, one sister, Adeline (Norbert) Yurczyk of St. Stephen, one brother-in-law Fred (Fritz) Salzer of St. Joseph, other relatives and many friends.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

My wife and I attended Memorial Day services in Albany last week. After an ecumenical worship service at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, I gave the address during ceremonies at the downtown park.

Met a wonderful gentleman afterward, Virgil Gruenke, who’s currently the oldest member of the Albany Legion Post. Just a few days shy of his 88th birthday, Virgil recounted being on the escort ship that led the battleship Missouri into Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender that ended World War II. It was a pleasure visiting as he re-counted stories of his service days. Virgil also mentioned that he still visits school groups and shares his life experiences. Special thanks to Virgil and

This must be the summer of hail storms in central Minnesota! After being in Albany last Monday morning, we visited our son and his wife, who live just down the freeway at St. Augusta. I recall leaving their place around mid-afternoon and noticing the sun shining brightly in the deep blue sky overhead. As we got back on the freeway and headed home, clouds were forming on the western horizon. And, sure enough, as we came to the area of St. John’s University, we drove into a fairly heavy hail storm.

We pulled onto the exit ramp and stopped as cars ahead of us appeared to huddle under the overpass in an attempt to escape the hail. As we sat there, I called my son to tell of our ill-timed ride home, and he said he could barely hear me because of the hail stones rattling off the roof of our car. A couple of times I thought our windshield was going to break as the stones got larger.

All told, the storm probably lasted about ten minutes as our car got peppered with hail dimples. To illustrate just

I will be in St. Paul later this week to take part in the Agri-Growth Council’s Legislative wrap-up event. The panel of legislators will give those in attendance an overview of what happened during the past session and an update on what’s ahead in agriculture. The event is expected to attract a good crowd from Minnesota’s food/agriculture industry as well as several out-of-state guests. Later that same day Thursday, a get-together will honor retiring Senate Ag Committee chairman Doug Magnus.

The last piece of legislation to be acted on by Gov. Dayton from the recently completed session pertained to shared parenting rights in divorce cases. He used what’s known as a “pocket veto,” where he took no action to either sign or actually veto the bill so, as a result the bill was, in effect, vetoed. The legislation (H.F. 322) would have raised the presumed parenting rights of both parties from 25 to 35 percent.

This month of June is Dairy Month.

A stranger dropped some kittens off in our Garden. They were so cute that we immediately fell in love with them.

Each morning when we would leave our home, the kittens would walk in front of us, stop and lay at our feet. They would not move until we petted them and talked to them. Then they would jump up and run to the box we had prepared for them. They were not hungry or thirsty, they simply wanted attention.

How like us. We can have everything in life that we could ever want – cars, homes, money, prestige, sound investments and a good income. But we still have the need for love. Everyone has a need for love and God has enough love for everyone.

Citation for Patriotic Service Award Pulse on People Allisha Kunkel, daughter of Mark and to Dr. James Hammarsten Gwen Kunkel of St. Cloud, Minn., particiBy Bill Knaak Dr. James F. Hammarsten was awarded a certificate of appreciation for his patriotic work in reviving the Memorial Day Services and Programs for the greater Grey Eagle, Minnesota Area at the Memorial Day remembrance held on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012 at Lakeview Cemetery.

Starting in 1985 through 2012, he gave leadership to these Memorial Day programs. Dr. Hammarsten revived the programs which had languished after the death of his father, the late F.R. Hammarsten, who had previously been the leader for Memorial Day programs in the greater Grey Eagle Area.

Dr. Hammarsten retired to Birch

Lake at Grey Eagle where he has made significant contributions to many community services for the area. He is committed to stellar recognition of war veteran’s. His retirement to the Grey Eagle area followed his post war medical practice and teaching at the University of Minnesota, and in the Veteran’s Hospital.

Dr. Hammarsten served his country admirably in the army medical services during World War II and the Korean Conflict, working in army medical facilities in Arizona, Texas, Pennsylvania Tennessee and Maryland. He entered the service as a private first class, and emerged as a colonel. He was also called into and served briefly in the Army Air Force.

During World War II, and later in the Korean Conflict, Dr. Hammarsten was involved in a variety of medical actions including research on atomic warfare. At the end of the war the unit under his command received a commendation for efficiency in processing service men and women out of the military.

pated in the commencement ceremony at the College of Saint Benedict on May 12 in the Haehn Campus Center/Clemens Field House on the CSB campus, St. Joseph, Minn. Kunkel is a candidate to receive a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education.

The 2012 CSB graduating class includes 460 undergraduate women. When combined with Saint John’s University’s graduating class of 430, this year’s undergraduate graduating class totals 890.

The CSB graduating class includes women from 16 different states and six countries.

Benedictine College held its annual commencement exercises on Saturday, May 12, 2012, in the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium on the Atchison campus. This year, 317 candidates were honored during the ceremony, including students from throughout the United States and around the world.

Jim Dickinson asked if the city would build a road off of the existing road in the industrial park that would loop back out to highway 28. Council decided they need to get a design for the road and a dollar amount of the project and report back at the next council meeting.

The small cities fix up loan is now complete. Six homes in Swanville were in the project and two businesses. The commercial payback is one third of project at 1.8% interest, payable back in 15 years.

The payback money will go into an account as to be borrowed again to another project.

The maintenance guys are working on replacing the dock on Lake Pepin. The dock is used and needs to have new boards and

stained. This project will be done shortly.

The park building doors on the north and west side needs to be replaced. An estimate was received for doors and labor in the amount of $800.00 for each door. Jim Molitor made a motion to replace these doors. AJ Johnson seconded the motion. Jim Piekarski abstained.

Motion carried. AJ Johnson stated he would ask the Swanville Lions if this could be a project they would help with to defray some of the cost.

The clerk presented the council with a resolution for elected official out-of-state travel policy. After being read and discussing the resolution, Jim Molitor made a motion to accept resolution 12-0508. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Appreances of some of the resident’s yards in the city were discussed. There are junk, junk cars and dead trees in these yards. Jim Molitor made a motion to send a

letter to residents that are in city ordinance violation. Jim Piekarski seconded the motion. All members voted in favor.

Century Link is asking permission to replace underground phone lines in Swanville. After discussion, Tim Grittner made a motion to sign the agreement. Jim Piekarski seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. AJ Johnson made a motion to approve the claims. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held June 5, 2012, at 7:30 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jim Piekarski and seconded by Tim Grittner to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Local Municipality Minutes Swanville City May 8, 2012 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Senior Center on Tuesday, May 8, 2012. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m.with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, Jim Molitor, Jim Piekarski, AJ Johnson, and Tim Grittner.

Also present: Nancy Hudalla, Bryan Allen, Jim Dickinson, Reporter Liz Verley and Brian Zapzalka.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held April 3, 2012 were read. Tim Grittner made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was

given. A motion was made by AJ Johnson and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Bryan Allen, representing Red’s Pub, was present to ask permission to have a band outside on his property parking lot. He is planning a grand opening on August 18, 2012. After discussion, AJ Johnson made a motion to allow the Pub to have a band in the parking lot on August 18 from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The library and city office project is now finished. The last bill for the electric work that was done at the library needs to be received yet.

The Mayor met with the senior center board to discuss bill paying arrangements for the senior center. Mayor Peterson presented the agreement to the council. The agreement states that the city will pay for water/sewer, garbage and recycling and half of the electric bill. Senior center will pay for fuel oil, half of the electric bill and maintenance of small projects.

Large maintenance projects will be discussed with the city on an individual bases. Mayor Peterson stated she will serve on the board at the center. Jim Piekarski made a motion to sign this agreement with the senior center. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Nancy Leaseman, a local artist, is hired to paint a mural of Swanville on the wall in the community center. Donations from private donors will pay for this project. Mayor Peterson will be contacted to observe this project.

Land use permits were then looked at. Nancy Hudalla would like to add a 14’x14’ deck onto her home. P & Z committee stated it meets the city requirements. Tim Grittner made a motion to give the land use permit to Hudalla. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Motion carried. The $50.00 fee has already been paid. Minnesotans who have yet to wet a line can do so on June 8-10 when they can fish without a license while accompanying a child younger than 16, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The annual Take-A-Kid Fishing weekend is designed to rekindle childhood memories, construct some new ones and create the next generation of anglers who will be the future stewards of the state’s natural resources.

“Remember catching your first fish?” asked Mike Kurre, DNR mentoring coordinator. “Helping a child catch his or her first fish and seeing that big smile never gets old.”

There are several keys to providing that special experience. The most important one is for the adult to leave their fishing pole at home so they can focus on the child’s positive angling experience.

“We urge people to pay attention to the young angler,” Kurre said. “Help bait the hook, cast and watch for a bite.

Share your childhood memories of fishing, too, or just plain talk.”
