Talk is cheap, but misunderstandings can be costly -By Harvey Mackay A new young worker at a construction site sat down to eat his lunch with the rest of the crew.

As an older fellow opened his thermos to pour out coffee the young worker asks, “What’s that?”

The older fellow says, “It’s a thermos bottle.”

“What is it for?” the young worker asks.

“It keeps hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold,” the older fellow said.

The next day the young worker arrives at the construction site with his own thermos.

The older fellow asks, “Whatcha got in your thermos?”

“Two cups of HOT coffee and a glass of COLD ice tea.”

“Communication does not begin with being understood, but with understanding others,” said W. Steven Brown, founder and chairman of the Fortune Group International.

Avoiding misunderstandings is fundamental to a successful workplace, not to mention life in general. Getting along is largely dependent on your communication

skills. If doing your job is important, you need to let people know what you’re doing, and you need to understand what they want from you.

Curious though it may seem, good communication starts with listening, not talking. Expressing yourself is vital, but understanding what others are telling you allows you to make your arguments more persuasive.

If you want your views to be respected, you must show equal respect when others express their opinions. Show that you understand their words and ideas, even if you disagree with them. A little empathy goes a long way.

Not only is brevity the soul of wit, it is also a demonstration of respect for others’ time. Going on and on, even when you’re right, turns people off. Learn to make your points clearly and concisely, then let others respond. No one likes to be lectured to.

Watch your tone. So much of twoway communication depends on both sides feeling like they are not in hostile territory.

Even when two parties disagree, getting rude and personal is never acceptable.

Never. Ever.

Body language often speaks louder than words. Nonverbal communication sends a powerful message. Be aware of your hand gestures, eye contact, stance and tone of voice so you don’t undercut what you’re trying to say. And pay attention to the other party’s cues. Adjust your

approach if necessary.

With so much of our communication written rather than spoken in person, don’t ignore the impact of texts, tweets, emails, posts and letters. You would think that because you actually have to take the time to type and transmit, it would be easier to choose your words more carefully.

Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Messages committed to print are eternal, it seems, so it pays to read and reread what you are expressing before you hit the send button. How many times have people had to take down a post because it didn’t say what they meant? Can you or your business afford a misunderstanding?

“Words have meaning beyond the obvious. Words have consequences beyond intention,” said John R. Dallas Jr., author of “We Need to Have a Word: Words of Wisdom, Courage and Patience for Work, Home and Everywhere.”

Let that sink in for a minute. A simple combination of letters can change the course of progress. A poorly chosen phrase can end a working relationship – even if you didn’t mean quite what you said.

In other words, think before you speak.

The Chinese philosopher Confucius was once asked his views on the importance of good communications in getting things done. “What,” asked the questioner, “is the first thing to be done if good work is to be accomplished?”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne The Land We usually refer to the property surrounding and including our home as “our land” or “our place.” Somehow our thinking has made us to believe that we actually own the land. The thought I have is, do we actually own it or are we only using the land, whether it is a city-sized lot or a 2000 acre farm?

The land area we live in only came into being as Minnesota about 170 years ago.

Prior to that time, it was said to be owned by some foreign country, so they could take the wood and furs which had grown here for 10,000 years. The Indians lived on our lands during that 10,000 year period and used the resources to exist. They, in most cases, used the local resources in a way similar to the local wild-life that also used the local resources to simply live.

When the Europeans invaded the area, they did it to primarily create a profit. They harvested furs, wildlife and trees that were plentiful in the area. As the existing natural harvest began to be depleted, the next way to use the land was with mining and agriculture. Both of these resources came after extensive labor to change the land to make it produce grains, granite and iron.

The new products from the land needed to be moved from the fields and mines to the processing plants. The transportation problem was solved by the development of the railroads and river systems. Since water was first, people said they “shipped” their products in ships, however the word ship worked so well that even today products are “shipped” by trucks and railroads.

Hmmm To entice the railroad to serve an area,

the government deeded many sections of land to them, which were adjacent to the railroad tracks. As a result, the railroads and logging companies owned a large part of Minnesota. This land was ultimately sold to individuals for private use.

If you are a land-owner, you probably have a deed to your property. This deed will show the progression of land ownership of your property back to the time the property was owned by the government. It’s interesting to see how many people have declared your land to be “our land.”

My thought is, do we really own the land, or does our ownership actually consist of our ownership of what the land produces? As we look at a farm of 150 years ago, it was usually from 40 to 80 acres.

It included a house, barn, outbuildings and some small fields. As time passed, these farms, including “our lan,” was incorporated into a neighbors property. The buildings, field boundaries and fence lines were destroyed and “our land” became the neighbor’s “our land.” The land only had a value based on the buyers idea of what the land could produce, whether it was thought to be crop land, wildlife area, residential building site or a place to hunt game. Again, it’s not that we own the land, it rather is what the land will produce. It’s produce can usually be taken to a place where the produce has a value, but unless one sells black dirt or gravel, the value is in what the land produces rather than in the actual dirt itself.

Recently, a friend told about a letter from someone in Chicago, who claimed that she owned land next to his land and wondered if he was interested in buying it. After investigating the plat of his area, he discovered that she did actually have deed to a land-locked piece of woods about 100’ by 100’ adjacent to 3 other neighbors properties. This piece of land was offered as a guarantee for a small loan in 1905.

The loan was not repaid and the land title passed to the Chicago lady’s ancestor.

Confucius replied, “Getting the definitions right, using the right words.” He elaborated that “when words are improperly applied, issues are misunderstood. When issues are misunderstood, the wrong plans are devised. When the wrong plans are devised, wrong commands are given.

When wrong commands are given, the wrong work is performed. When the wrong work is performed, organizations fail.

When organizations fail, the people suffer.”

And so he concluded, “the first thing is to achieve the proper naming of things.”

Two men went into a diner and sat down at the counter. They ordered two sodas, took sandwiches out of their packs and started to eat them. The owner saw

what was going on and approached the men.

“You can’t eat your own sandwiches in here,” he complained.

So the two men stopped, looked at each other and then swapped their sandwiches.

Mackay’s Moral: It is wiser to choose what you say than to say what you choose.

Obituaries Blake J. Hemker

Blake J. Hemker, age 22 of Freeport, passed away peacefully due to complications from cystic fibrosis on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at his home in Freeport, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 3 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Entombment was in the parish cemetery.

Blake Joseph Hemker was born March 13, 1997 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Jim and Jean (Engelmeyer) Hemker. He graduated from Melrose High School in 2015. He worked as a courier for Freeport State Bank for a short time.

Blake was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. He had a strong

faith growing up, but the challenges of cystic fibrosis had him questioning his faith. In the last six to seven months, Blake and Father Dan had many conversations that helped him restore his faith and ease his fear of dying. Blake had a very strong will to live and hit many milestones in his life. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed playing X-Box, golfing, watching SJU college football, other professional sports, and food network shows.

Survivors include his parents, Jim and Jean Hemker of Freeport; brother and sister, Jamie (Cheri) Hemker of Sauk Rapids and Meaghan Hemker (Ryan Hickman) of Freeport; nephews, Tyler, Connor, and Nolan Hemker; grandmother, Marge Engelmeyer of St. Rosa; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Blake was preceded in death by his grandparents, Art Engelmeyer and Virgil and Lola Hemker; uncle, Jack Engelmeyer; and infant cousin, Burke Engelmeyer.

Serving as casket bearers were Jamie Hemker, Jamie Engelmeyer, Isaac Beste, Austin Pundsack, Brandon Wehlage, and Jordan Zirbes. Cross bearer was McKenzie Engelmeyer and scripture bearer was Zoey Engelmeyer. Gift bearers were Meaghan Hemker, Julie Voit, and Jay Engelmeyer.

Lector was Michelle Bumgardner and reading petitions will be Tyler and Connor Hemker.

Valeria was born September 26, 1921 in Albany to Joseph & Cecelia (Boerger) Cremers. She attended Albany Area Schools and attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Minneapolis. Valeria married William “Bill” Blenker on October 13, 1942 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. The couple lived together in Chicago and Laguna Beach, CA until 1948. After that the couple

Jerome “Soupie” Vos The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Jerome “Soupie” Vos, age 85, will be 11:00 AM Friday, June 7th at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary in Holdingford.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Jerome passed away peacefully at the Melrose Hospital from pneumonia on Monday, June 3. Friends and family may gather after 9:30 AM Friday at the church.

Jerome was born August 28, 1933 to Conrad and Mary (Rakotz) Vos. He was the youngest of 6 children. During his school days, he was a cheerleader and set bowling pins for the Fun Center. He married Rita Mrosla on September 20, 1955 and they

moved to Albany until 1972 then built their dream lake home on Upper Spunk Lake.

The couple lived there for 26 years before moving back to Albany. She enjoyed many winters at their home in Texas. She was a member of St. Ann’s Society, Christian Mothers, Albany Legion Ladies Auxiliary and member of the Albany Golf Course.

Valeria lived life to the fullest spending time with her family, traveling, golfing, and snow skiing. She made beautiful quilts and ceramics, crossword puzzles, playing cards, especially bridge and listening to books.

Family and her faith were the most important to Valeria. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her daughters, Jean (Earl) Pundsack of Albany and Diane (Loren) Schiffler of Avon; brother, Dale Cremers of Minneapolis; 9 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and son-in-law, Gary Andvik of Albany.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill in 2001; son, David in 2013; daughter, Carol Andvik in 2006; brother, Gordon Cremers and daughter in-law, Mary.

Jerome is survived by his children; Mike (Martha Breth) Vos, Holdingford; David (Patty) Vos, Bowlus; Lynne (Pebbles) Pueringer, Freeport; and Kelly (Dave) Lane, Holdingford. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, his brother, Arnold Voss, Holdingford; sisters, Alice Ripka and Violet Fern, and many other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife Rita in 2013, his parents, Mary and Conrad Vos, his brothers, Vernon Voss and infant Gilbert Vos.

Wendy L. Ploof, 61 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Country Manor Assisted Living in Sartell, MN. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, June 10, 2019 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Burial will take place in Bearhead Cemetery in Pillsbury, MN. A visitation will be held from 9:30-11:00 A.M. on Monday, June 10, 2019 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Wendy was born on October 30, 1957 in Two Harbors, MN to the late Marvin and Shirley (Jasdzewski) Ploof. She grew up in Swanville, MN where she attended school and graduated from Swanville Senior High.

Lucille “Lue” Zabinski, 80, of North Prairie died June 1, 2019 at Good Shepherd Memory Care Cottages in Sauk Rapids.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in North Prairie. Rev. Roger Klassen officiated and burial was in Holy Cross Catholic Church Cemetery.

Lue was born in St. Cloud, MN on April 29, 1939 to Ed and Marie (Bromenschenkel) Prom. In her youth Lue was active in neighborhood softball, 4-H, rural youth, and horseback riding. She is a 1957 graduate of Technical High School in St. Cloud; and

eventually became blind. Throughout her life, despite her handicap of being blind she still remained a very positive person and always had a very positive outlook on life.

She loved and had several cats and dogs throughout her life which she cherished their companionship. Wendy was an avid audiobook listener and she also spent many hours sitting outside listening to the sounds of birds and nature. She loved her family dearly as well as her many nieces and nephews which she treated as her children.

Wendy was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Wendy was survived by brothers, Edward (Kathy) Ploof of Clear Lake, MN and Alan (RoseAnne) Ploof of Swanville, MN; nieces and nephews, Adam (Kelly Carlson) Ploof, Father Jermey Ploof, Heather (Shawn) Larson and Amanda (Scott) Pepper; great-nieces and nephews, Alyssa Fleweling, Hailey Larson, Tianna Larson, Kieara Larson, Natalya Strassburg, McKenna Pepper and Shaylee Pepper and great-great-niece and nephew, Razzer and Nova.

Wendy was preceded in death by parents, Marvin and Shirley Ploof. held various bookkeeping jobs following graduation. Lue was united in marriage to John “Jack” Zabinski on August 28, 1962 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud. The couple dedicated their lives to family, farm, and faith. She enjoyed dancing, music, gardening, sewing, skating, swimming, walking and long drives. Above all else Lucille loved her time with family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Lue loved each unconditionally and will be dearly missed.

Lue is survived by her children; Michael, Ann (Ron) Borash, David, Tony, Pat (Lisa), Ron, Mary (Jan) Kaeter, Rich (Sharon), Ruth (Jeremy) Vorwerk; 19 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; siblings, Ed Prom, Dorothy Schoborg, Don (Mary) Prom, Al (Marcy) Prom, Hilde Johnston, Jack (Judy) Prom.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; grandson, Michael Borash; and sister, Marge Hansen.

A Funeral Service was held Monday, June 3, 2019, at the First Baptist Church, Long Prairie for Chuck McMurray, age 87 of Long Prairie, MN who passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019, at the CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie.

Pastor Matt Stacey officiated and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Charles “Chuck” was born on November 3, 1931 to Charles and Edith (Lee) McMurray in Greenfield, IA. He grew up in East Moline, IL. He graduated from United Township High School and went on to attend the Baptist Bible Seminary in Grand Rapids, MI. This is where he met Alice Spence in 1956. Soon after their marriage in 1957, the couple moved to Brainerd, MN where he began the career that he cherished for 58 years. Chuck worked as a commercial artist for Cathedral Press. In 1965 he moved to Long Prairie. He did the work he loved with the people he loved until he retired. Chuck was an avid reader leaving his family with hundreds of books. He also loved to draw and paint. He traveled throughout the world on several mission trips. Chuck’s genuine heart and love for people was recognized

Todd County Breakfast on the Farm

By Amy Ebnet, Todd County Breakfast on the Farm Committee Twin Eagle Dairy, Pat and Jody Lunemann of Clarissa, MN are the 2019 host farm for the annual Breakfast on the Farm Event.

The purpose of the event is to educate and bring a better understanding to people of what farming is actually about and experience an operating dairy farm.

Twin Eagle Dairy hosted the 2013 Breakfast on the Farm. They experienced positive feedback and a great turnout so they volunteered to host it again this year.

The Lunemann’s milk 800 cows and farm 1,500 acres.

This years event will be held Saturday, June 22, 2019. A meal of cheeseburgers, chips, pickles, milk and ice cream will be served. There will be a farm tour and activities like a petting zoo, machinery exhibits, children activities and educational booths. Everyone is welcome!

For safety reasons there will be no parking at the farm. Please park at the former Eagle Valley School track field in Clarissa and ride the free shuttle buses.

One translator studied this verse for years and finally decided that it would best be translated, “How enriched are those who draw their strength from You, whose hearts are focused on You.” Those attempting to draw strength from the “things” that are of this world will be left weak, weary and worn-out.

And anyone whose heart is focused on what is seen will discover that their vision will not survive reality.

Dear Motor Medics, I travel 50 miles each way to work each day and share the road with a lot of large long-haul trucks.

It seems that they always think they own the road. They are either going too fast or too slow or cutting me off or any other number of things that seem just plain rude to me. Why can’t they be more like other vehicles on the road? Not to say that all other vehicles are perfect drivers but it just seems as though the trucks are worse.

You have to remember that even the largest SUV, is a high-performance sports car when compared to a multi-ton truck. When you pull onto the interstate you can adjust your speed to stay clear of the trucks much faster than they can.

Don’t expect them to move quickly for you and never position yourself directly in front of a truck, if you stop quickly, they can’t. If you feel you are being cut off often where are you driving? If you can’t see their mirrors then the driver can’t see you. Don’t hog the passing lane going the speed limit either. They are slow uphill and fast down so share the road and leave the enforcement to the officers.

-Julie Dear Julie, Let’s see, how should I put this? No! If you can’t afford a home on a 15year mortgage, it means you can’t afford the house. Period.

If you currently own a house, and the only way to keep from being foreclosed on or going bankrupt is to refinance into a 30-year mortgage, you’d probably do

that – but it doesn’t make it better than a 15-year mortgage. You’ll never hear me recommend a 30-year mortgage. I might tolerate one in an extreme situation, but I wouldn’t tell you to go get one.

Besides, why would you want to stay in debt for 30 years? Do you have a fear of winning with money? Are you feeling so generous toward the bank that you want to just hand them piles of cash every month for three decades?

The average millionaire in this country pays off their mortgage in 10.2 years. Do what smart people do, Julie. Do what people who win with money do. A 15-year, fixed rate mortgage is the only kind of home loan I recommend!

Burnhamville Township April 30, 2019 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held April 30, 2019 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of March 26, 2019 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Johnson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about road repairing supplies, a road restriction waiver from Central Specialities, ditch mowing bid letters and road mileage certification from the county.

Someone contacted a supervisor to request a Yield Sign for Erie Drive and Era Trail. After discussion the board approved the sign request and a supervisor will put it up. A resident of Fitland Loop expressed concern about a semi shed proposed for that road. The board stated that the county does the planning and zoning for this township.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5742 through 5755: Rev. $1,130.03; R & B $7,381.78. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Supervisors reset Tuesday, May 7 at 3 pm as the date for the annual road inspection.

The board will table the ditch mowing until a later date as needed.

Clean up Day is set for May 18 from 9-11 am. Sup. Berscheit approved the bid from Tom’s Refuse and Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Sup. Johnson made a motion to keep the prices the same as last year. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motions passed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $80,462.19. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

In the road report the board requested the contractor to disc edge of roads to reclaim gravel and push all across. Mons Lake Access has an issue with the landing planks coming apart. Supervisors discussed with DNR and they will not help. Supervisors and road con-

tractor will work to move wooden planks.

Dust control will be done the same as before and add spray 331st from 160 to 150 St. A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed. The council members discussed the water tower quotes they have received from three different companies. City engineer Jeremy Boots from Moore Engineering will look over the quotes and will have a spec sheet that all the companies can follow to give a more precise quote. Boots will also change the IUP letter that was sent into the state to repairs to the water tower rather than a new tower at this time.

Scott Saehr, from Soucewell formally NJPA, gave a report to the council on all the sources available to the city and other information the city could obtain using Sourcewell.

The Clerk presented to council a quote from Service Master Clean Little Falls to strip and reseal the floors in the Swanville Center for $1,052.00. After discussion, Tony Maciej made a motion to have Service Master redo the floors in the Center and the city will pay the bill and not bill the senior’s for half.

Mayor Lange presented to council the Swan River lease agreement from Loven’s Hills LLC to be signed by Mayor Lange and the clerk. All of the council was in favor to sign the land use agreement for parking and river access.

A land use permit was presented to council for Tim and Linda Dally to build a second 4 plex housing apartment complex on Lot 1 Block 1 in the North Berkey Addition. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the permit for Tim and Linda Dally 4 plex. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. Land use permit was presented for Roxanne Thompson to build 25’x16’ addition onto existing house. Deb Wood made a motion to approve the Thompson addition.

Tony Maciej seconded the motion.

No fee will be collected for the reason the fee was paid already but plans changed from a porch to an addition. Bryan Allen applied for a land use permit to build an 18’x12’ deck onto the existing house with a fence. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the permit for Allen.

Tony Maciej seconded the motion.

The Planning and Zoning committee has approved these permits. All council members were in favor of the permits, motions carried.

A land use permit was presented from John Hoogenhous to build onto his existing garage which would be too close to the property line. Council will revisit at next council meeting.

Many complaints are being received by residents on dogs running loose and barking at all hours within the city. Dog owners are reminded the city ordinance states dogs need to be kept on leashes and controlled.

Reminder of the City Wide Cleanup day will be held Saturday, June 1, 2019; 9 am to 11:00 am by the city park.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at 7:00 pm in the Swanville Center.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Norm Carlson to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Future of Selling Land in Grey Eagle?

By Pastor Bitz For a while now St. John’s Lutheran Church has been trying to sell the house they have used as their pastor’s residence.

As recommended by real estate people they had the property surveyed so the legal description of the parcel they owned could be split up. The parcel contains 4 lots from the original subdivision. The house sits across two of the lots and the church sits across the other two. Desiring to keep more of the open space between the two buildings, the church had the surveyor divide the parcel closer to the house leaving a small portion of those two lots with the church lots. This is what most people would call a “Simple Property Line Adjustment.”

The Grey Eagle City Attorney disagrees. Since 2007 the Grey Eagle City Council has been operating with an ordinance that regulates how property can be sold or conveyed as mandated by the county who records these things. Before this ordinance all property division went through the county and their ordinance clearly defined what parcel division are exempt from the subdivision platting requirements. The clear intent of making towns have a subdivision ordinance is to have Cities pre-approving new subdivisions instead of the county, not to radically change how property divisions happen.

On May 14th I met with the Grey Eagle City Council concerning the division of St. Johns’ property. Even though St. John’s is dividing 4 lots to make 2 parcels with plenty of space around all structures the City Attorney insists that this property division should be treated as a subdivision instead of using a survey to define the property lines which a simple reading of the town ordinances allows. According to the Attorney’s opinion the only way the church can divide the parcel as surveyed is to re-plat the land which requires more costly surveying work and multiple approval meetings. This is in contrast to

a simple property line adjustment which needs a survey and a simple form submitted to the county.

St. John’s is resisting this view because of the massive problems it would lead to for the town. The council plans to discuss these issues further. I would be greatly worried if I owned land in Grey Eagle that did not follow a lot line exactly.

I would be worried because the City Attorney wants to treat any and all divisions of parcels as a subdivision in the City regardless of size or usage. By taking this view the city is radically changing how divisions of parcels get treated.

Before 2007 a lot could be split between neighbors with a survey and a form submitted to the county. Now the City Attorney thinks that a lot needs to be treated like a subdivision and go through the whole subdivision approval process. The county still has forms for simple property line adjustments and still has detailed ordinances to determine what needs subdivision platting and approval. Both City and County ordinances can be found at their websites by searching for “Planning and Zoning.”

The members of St. John’s are concerned about what kind of precedent would be set by going through the subdivision process for this sale. Doing the surveys and creating subdivision plats costs thousands of dollars more than a simple survey. If this concerns you, talk to a city council member or go to the city council meeting June 11th at 7:00 pm at City Hall.

The City Attorney has taken up a terrible position for the future of selling land in Grey Eagle. The county’s system in the past is simple and thorough. As an extension of the county’s recording process a city’s parcel division process should harmonize with the county’s for the sake of good order.

A visitation will be from 2-6 pm on Thursday June 6, 2019 at the Williams Dingmann Stein Chapel in Long Prairie for Kevin Zanda, 40 of Long Prairie who passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND. Kevin was born April 10, 1979 in St. Paul to Joan Zanda. He grew up in Long Prairie and graduated from Long Prairie High School. He worked on road construction for a while before moving to Alexandria to attend school. He earned an associate’s degree in physical science health and fitness. Kevin loved his son Trayton (Alexandria) and enjoyed spending time with him. He also loved spending time with family and friends. Playing sports, lifting weights, fishing, watching movies, playing video games and watching the Minnesota Vikings were some of his favorite activities.

Matthew loved his family and friends, he treasured time spent with those he loved. Matthew’s nieces and nephews held a special place in his heart, he always made his time with them special and knew how to make them smile. Matthew will be remembered by how he took time to make people feel special, whether it was someone he had just met or someone he knew for a long time. He could always make you smile or laugh.

Survivors include his parents, Frank and Peggy Sandelin; sisters Lorrie (Chad Johnson) Sandelin, Minneapolis, Carrie (Dean) Faulkner, San Diego; brothers Jonathan (Sherri) Sandelin, Grey Eagle, Andrew (Stephanie) Sandelin, Tampa, FL and Joshua Sandelin, Saint Louis Park; beloved nieces and nephews, Zoe, Ayla, Josiah, Isaiah, Riley and Kai. He is preceded in death by his Grandparents.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Assembly of God Church in Long Prairie.

May 16, 2019: At 10:30 received a theft complaint that occurred on County 2 near Archer Drive in Birchdale TWP Sect 24, Grey Eagle. Todd County Public Works reporteds that in the early part March of 2019, a School bus stop ahead sign was stolen. May 20, 2019: At 10:16 received a call of a two vehicle accident with injuries that occurred at 21543 County 10 in rural Long Prairie. Josh Skramstad from this residence, was backing his Ford truck out of his garage when he struck a Chrysler minivan in his driveway.

The driver of the van, Sophia Kluver, rural Sauk Centre, was transported to the Long Prairie Hospital to get treated for her non life threatening injuries. Josh was transported by personal vehicle to get treated for his injuries.

The Long Prairie Police, Long Prairie Ambulance, and Long Prairie Fire Rescue assisted at the scene.

June 2, 2019: At 16.44 received a damage to property report at the Burtrum Grey Eagle Lion’s Park in the city of Burtrum. It was reported that sometime between 05-312019 and 06-02-2019 someone had damaged the door jamb in an attempt to break into the shelter at the park and tipped over a Porta Potty at the park. Any information in regards to this incident, please contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

June 3, 2019: At 12:11 received a call of a property damage accident that occurred on County 104 in rural Swanville. Shawn Hollermann, rural Burtrum, was driving a tractor eastbound when he was attempting to turn into the address of 33673 County 104. A black 4 door sedan was also eastbound and attempted to pass Hollermann on the left as he was making the right hand turn. To avoid the car going off the road or hitting Hollermann’s tractor and trailer, he went off the driveway and went down in the ditch causing damage to a Century Link junction box. TCSO is looking for information about the 4 door black sedan that was involved in the incident. Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Called to Preach: Acts 16:9-15 Macedonia needs help, Paul heads to Philippi of Macedonia to preach. The Holy Spirit had prevented them from preaching in Asia, and Paul and his cohorts were looking for a new destination.

When Christians are sent to help they are also sent to preach. Acts is a record of the Early Church as the Holy Spirit worked and guided the church from Jerusalem, to Judea, and to the ends of the Earth, namely Rome. The journey from Troas to Philippi couldn’t be more than 150 miles as the boat floats which is how far the drive is from Grey Eagle to Mankato.

Sometimes we think of Missions as the work that is happening in some far-away land. When we read through Acts the Holy Spirit is intervening to direct Paul and his band to a location that is but a hop, skip and a jump away in our world. Today we don’t even need to leave the state to go as far as Paul.

Even for Paul his first Goal was to reach the people around him. Paul wanted to preach in Asia but that wasn’t working.

They only left when the Holy Spirit led them to the next region over. In all of Paul’s missionary travels it is interesting to note that he never left the Roman Empire. He was not an international missionary.

Whether we focus our efforts more locally or set our sights farther away the goal of missions is to preach the good news. Paul was called to preach the good news to new people; so are we, and so are our modern day missionaries. In the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) our synodical theme is Witness, Mercy and Life Together. The heart of the church which is Jesus is most clearly found where these three functions of the church intersect. Being called to preach is part of our witness and like Paul we are to do it wherever the Holy Spirit leads.

In recent years our church body has sent fewer preaching missionaries overseas; instead, our focus has shifted to helping the local churches teach and train their own pastors and preachers.

Local preachers are far more effective at sharing the good news in their area than we would ever be able to. The best way we have found to help these growing church bodies is to help them get their own seminaries going. We are called to help which is also a call to preach.

The way we can be truly mission-minded as God’s people in Grey Eagle, MN is to tune our ears to these calls for help. The whole region might not be calling out in one voice but we

can hear that one person and help them.

The gospel, the forgiveness of sins in Jesus, the new life we have in Jesus is foundational, it is the bedrock people around us need. The world is preaching some terrible lies, it is our calling in the Holy Spirit to help by preaching the truth. The truth is that God is Creator of heaven and earth, that we are loved by God, and we can be forgiven of our sin through the blood of Christ.

Whether the need is physical or spiritual we are called to help and that means we are called to preach. Amen.

By Marilyn Woldstad The Upsala Area Community Center board met recently and brainstormed any ideas that came to mind. We’re trying to make decisions that will help keep us afloat. An obvious place to focus is on our meals. Lunches and breakfasts, and donations, have been the main sources of income for the Community Center.

We are planning to extend our lunch time from 11:30 to 12:30, and serve a complete meal. Reservations would still be required (573-4435) but you could come in any time between 11:30 and 12:30 to eat. You could stay as late as 1:00. Take out would also be available, We’re not sure when we could begin this, as current regulations dictate.

Last Wednesday we had a good turnout for our first Wednesday breakfast.

We will continue with breakfasts on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday until further notice. Takeout is also available for breakfasts. You can call before you come or just order when you come in.

One of our guests from Upsala suggested donations to help pay monthly bills at the center. We have the City water/utility bill, the gas bill, and the electric

bill. In winter we pay to have the snow shoveled. We will have to have a new phone when Meals on Wheels leaves, and that will be an added expense.

We will have to find out how to pay for our food for breakfasts and lunches, and will probably have guidelines to follow. Help in any of these would be welcome.

One person isn’t expected to pay our bills. Just pick a number you would feel free with and donate it for a cause.

Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver lunches.

We’re hoping to work with you on preserving our Upsala Area Community Center.

Structure Fire: May 26, 2019: Around 10:00 p.m., Deputies Matt Mayers, Paul Breth and Peggy Engler responded to a car in the ditch north of Lower Spunk Lake near Spunk Creek.

The car had been southbound on County Road 9, left the road and rolled over. The passenger was able to get out of the car, but the driver was still inside caught up in the seatbelt. The car was in approximately one foot of water in the ditch but there was no concern of the driver drowning. Avon Rescue responded to the scene and assisted the driver out of the car. Both the driver and passenger were eventually transported to the St. Cloud Hospital for any potential injuries.

Prior to transporting, Deputy Mayers spoke to the driver and was able to identify things that led him to believe the driver was not sober. During their conversation, the driver admitted to drinking alcohol and using illegal drugs. Deputy Mayers followed the ambulance to the hospital and later obtained a blood sample for testing via search warrant. After Deputy Mayers was finished with his investigation, he left both parties at the hospital.

Once the results from the blood sample are back, the matter may be referred to the Stearns County Attorney’s Office for DWI charges. As such, we won’t identify the driver at this time.

Deputy Mayers indicated while he was at the hospital, the driver continued to experience hallucinations. It makes one wonder what the drive into the curves and ditch was like for him. A simple reminder: drinking, driving and drugs do not mix.

Do not drive impaired.

Crash with Injuries: June 1, 2019: A two vehicle crash two miles west of Sauk Centre results in non-life-threatening injuries. The crash occurred on CSAH

17 at 385th Avenue. Elizabeth Amelung, 19, of Sauk Centre, and her brother, Isaac Amelung, 13, Sauk Centre, were eastbound on CSAH 17 in their 2004 white Pontiac Bonneville. Robert Hens, 65, of Sauk Centre, was westbound on CSAH 17 in his 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Elizabeth made a left turn onto 385th Avenue northbound turning in front of Hens and the vehicles collided.

All three occupants of the vehicles were transported to the Sauk Centre Hospital for treatment of their non-life-threatening injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Sauk Centre Police, Minnesota State Patrol and Sauk Centre Ambulance and Fire.

The crash remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office.

Crash with Injuries: June 4, 2019: ATV driver injured after colliding with field roller. John Hellermann, 67, and Dylan Hellermann, 24, both of Melrose, were northbound on County Road 17 in their CAN-AM side-by-side ATV. A black Ford pickup truck pulling a field roller passed the ATV on the left. John attempted to make a left-hand turn into a field approach when he struck the field roller.

John fell out of the ATV and the roller ran over him causing severe injuries.

John was transported to the Melrose Hospital by Melrose Ambulance for treatment of his injuries. Dylan was not injured.

The pickup driver, Myron Reiman, 69, of Melrose, was not injured.

North Air helicopter was dispatched to the crash but was unable to respond due to the weather.

Melrose Police Department, Melrose Fire Department and MN State Patrol assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and MN State Patrol.
