Lessons learned from The Champ -By Harvey Mackay

I will never forget the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta when Muhammad Ali was the surprise person to light the Olympic torch.

I was sitting in the stadium, watching that spectacle with my entire family.

At the time, I was writing my third book, “Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty: The Only Networking Book You will Ever Need.” I wanted to intersperse stories from the best networkers in the world. I thought, who better than The Champ? But how would I get to him?

Remember the Broadway show and movie “Six Degrees of Separation?”

a chain of no more than six people that links every person on this planet to every other person.

I often use that strategy in tracking people down, and it came in handy again this time. John Y. Brown, the former Kentucky Governor, is a good friend. He put me in touch with Howard Bingham, Muhammad’s long-time photographer and best friend. Howard introduced me to Muhammad, and I flew to his beautiful 88-acre estate – the former hideout of Al Capone – in Berrien Springs, Michigan, and interviewed The Champ for six hours for my book.

But first, I did my homework and completed a “Mackay 66” on Muhammad. (The Mackay 66 Customer Profile is a 66-question synopsis, available for free on my website – www.harveymackay.com.) At MackayMitchell Envelope Company we require all of our sales people to fill it out about each of our customers.

We want to know, based on routine conversation and observation, what our customers are like as human beings.

What do they feel strongly about? What are they most proud of having achieved?

Any status symbols in their office? In other words, we want to know what turns that person on.

In Muhammad’s case it was magic, so I had a local magician teach me a few magic tricks that I could explain and teach to The Champ. We hit it off

and have been great friends for the last 20 years. That relationship extended to a tremendous friendship between our wives, Carol Ann and Lonnie.

During a break from that interview, we headed out to lunch. I introduced Muhammad to my driver, Francis.

Twenty minutes later, we rolled into a restaurant. As we’re getting out of the car, Muhammad whispered to me, “Tell Francis to join us for lunch.”

One thing for sure, when Francis got up in the morning, picked up his work sheet, and read that he was assigned to pick up an envelope salesman from Minnesota for a routine run, he never imagined that he’d be invited by Muhammad Ali to join him for lunch.

Muhammad was a master at trying to make everyone feel special.

The Champ also taught me many other lessons that apply to both life and business: • Don’t be boring or predictable.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Patriotism

As an elementary school student, I was taught a set of values, which today appear to be either forbidden or ignored. Maybe World War ll and the Korean conflict were still current events. Maybe those who put themselves in harms way and had just come home from military conflicts, shared stories that made us proud to be American. I’m sure these factors and many others guided our young lives.

I remember when the flag was raised

in front of the school, students left the classroom to stand in front of the school, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, while the flag was raised on the pole. The Pledge was recited and America was sung in the classroom at the beginning of the school day, if the weather prevented outdoor activities. Each classroom had a flag on the wall and they appeared in the halls and auditorium.

Activities involving respect and appreciation of our nation instilled patriotic feelings in the students in their early years. These feelings of pride for our nation remained a part of our being.

Many individuals say they get a special sentimental feeling when the Star Spangled Banner is sung.

• Be your own self-promoter. He learned this lesson from pro wrestler Gorgeous George when the two were interviewed on a radio program. A flair for poetry proved helpful!

• Stand up for your convictions. His faith led him to be a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, for which he was suspended from boxing for more than three years during his prime.

• Reward your fans – not with a brush off, like so many athletes today, but take genuine pleasure to honor their requests. When I traveled with him, Muhammad would stop and talk to everyone. He strongly believed in answering his fan mail and sending out autographed photos.

• Be generous with your time for worthwhile charities. Prime example: The Champ was an unstoppable force behind Celebrity Fight Night, which has raised $123 million dollars to support the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center in Phoenix and many other charities. I have had the honor of serving on the Celebrity Fight Night board for 20 years.

• The world always looks brighter behind a smile.

Muhammad always had his 1,000 megawatt smile. He knew smiling was the universal language.

• Deal with your own physical limitations in good spirits and with optimism – not bitterness and self-pity.

Back in 1975, a “New York Times” reporter asked Muhammad why he had made a significant contribution to a specific charity. Ali responded: “Service to others is the rent I pay for my room here on earth.”

He has paid that rent many times over.

Muhammad Ali will always be “The Greatest.”

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

June 29, 2016: At approximately 2:49 am, their office received a report of someone smashing mailboxes along Hwy. 27 east of Little Falls. Morrison County deputies responded to the area and observed several mailboxes that were damaged. The Little Falls Police Department assisted and located a vehicle on the side of the road occupied by two juvenile males. Both 17 year old male occupants admitted to damaging the mailboxes with a baseball bat. They are awaiting formal charges.

In total, there were over 60 mailboxes damaged throughout the townships of Little Falls, Agram, Pierz and Buckman.

Sheriff Larsen wants to remind residents to continue reporting suspicious activity to their office at 320-6329233.

Some of us can remember when our nation directed us to perform an activity which, in retrospect, was rather silly.

After the Russians got the “bomb,” the kids in the classrooms were required to practice crawling under their desk and cover their heads. A portion of our bodies were not protected by the desk, since the desk was not very large. Jokes were made about the lower body parts that were left exposed. When we see the total destruction of the two Japanese cities, we may possibly question how effective crawling under a desk would be?

I hope that our school students continue to remember the sacrifices

made by a few individuals who have made this country and it’s educational opportunities the best in the world.

Kim K. Bogard-Imdieke

Obituaries Kathryn A. “Katie” Dolence Kathryn A. “Katie” Dolence, age 85 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully with family at her bedside on Friday, June 24, 2016 at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 29 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Kathryn Ann Westbrock was born October 28, 1930 in Freeport, Minnesota to Herman and Mary (Schmidt) Westbrock. On April 26, 1949 she was united in marriage to Robert Dolence at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle.

Katie worked as a paraprofessional for the Grey Eagle and Long Prairie School District for many years. Katie was known as the best cook to her family. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, bowling, going to garage sales and antique shopping. She also enjoyed traveling with her sister within the U.S. and was a huge Twins fan.

Katie was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her children,

Sherry (Jim) Bretz of Perham, Dan Dolence of Grey Eagle, Pat (Chuck) Kitzman of Fergus Falls, Mary (Keith) Matthies of Holdingford, and Gina Clear of Upsala; ten grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren with one due in October; brother and sister, Richard (Geri) Westbrock of Belton, Missouri, and Carol Dolence of St. Joseph; and sister-in-law, Audrey Westbrook of Lakeville.

Katie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dolence on April 26, 1985; parents; brothers, Bill and Tony; two infant brothers; and sister-in-law, Bernice Westbrock.

Serving as casket bearers were Dustin Kitzman, Andy Clear, Ryan Dolence, Steve Skroch, Greg Willenbring, Geoff Carlson, Isaiah Weber, and Joe Lee. Cross bearer was Sam Weber and scripture bearer was Luke Weber. Gift bearers were Don Dolence and Bonnie Landwehr.

Readers were Dave Swenson and Paul Landwehr.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Adelaide M. Klimmek, age 96, of Palm Springs, CA formerly of Holdingford, MN will be on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at the Church of All Saints – St. Mary in Holdingford. Adelaide was born on February 3, 1920 to Andrew and Martha (Young) Lipski in Holdingford. She grew up with one brother and three sisters and graduated from the local high school. On May 15, 1943 Adelaide married Edwin Klimmek at Fort Ord, CA while he was in the army. When Edwin was sent overseas, she worked at Douglas Aircraft

as a “Rosie the Riveter” assembling war planes. After moving to Minneapolis in 1954, their family was completed by a son and a daughter. She spent time working as a bartender and as a cafeteria waitress.

In 2007, Adelaide and Edwin retired to Palm Springs, CA. She enjoyed a variety of activities, such as dancing, fishing, bowling, and visiting relatives. Adelaide was a positive force who was kind to all.

Those who knew her will miss her dearly.

Adelaide is survived by her children Randall Klimmek, Palm Springs, CA and Ramona Klimmek, Palm Springs, CA; her brother Andy Lipski, Becker, MN; as well as many friends and family.

She is greeted in Heaven by her husband Edwin, her parents Andrew and Martha Lipski, and her sisters Miranda Wolney, Viola Herbes, and Delphine Heinen.

made a lot of things for the church and her friends. Some of her favorite pastimes include snowmobiling, watching car racing, being outdoors, fishing, camping, and sitting by a fire. Kim enjoyed being involved in pool and bowling leagues in Albany, and most of all, she enjoyed being barefoot or wearing her flippers.

Kim was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Farming Township.

Survivors include her husband, Harvey Imdieke of Albany; son, Jordan (Alli) Bogard of Albany; step-children, Ryan (Cortney) Imdieke of Belgrade, Lori (Jason) Eich of Sartell, and Jeremy Imdieke of New Munich; five grandchildren; sister and brothers, Jeanette “Jan” Grunert of St. Cloud, Dennis Bogard of Albany, Terry Bogard of Albany, twin brother, Jay (Julie) Bogard of Albany; and five nieces.

Kim K. Bogard-Imdieke, age 56 of Albany, died on Saturday, June 25, 2016 surrounded by her family at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, July 1 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Farming Township with Rev. Fred Kutter officiating.

Interment will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Farming Township.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m.

Kimberly Kae Bogard was born November 10, 1959 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Albert and Isabel (Lemke) Bogard. She graduated from Albany High School in 1978. On July 3, 1992 she married Harvey Imdieke in Alexandria. She was a member of the Local 49ers Union for 11 ½ years doing road construction. She then worked at Tani Division in Albany.

F u n e r a l Services will be at 2 pm, Friday, July 1, 2016 at American Lutheran Church, Long Prairie for Gloria A. Barthel, age 71, of Swanville who passed away on Tuesday, June 28 at her home.

Rev. David Greaver will officiate and burial will be at Springbrook Cemetery, Swanville. Family and friends may call from 4-8 pm, Thursday at the Williams Dingmann Funeral Home – Stein Chapel, Long Prairie and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Gloria Ann Johnson was born October 15, 1944 in Little Falls, Minnesota, the daughter of Theodore and Doris (Berry) Johnson. She grew up in Burtrum, Minnesota and attended school in Burtrum and later Grey Eagle, graduating from high school in 1962. Gloria married Frank Barthel on June 2, 1962 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville. They made their home in Pierz for a short time before returning to Swanville, where they raised their family. She was later employed at Jennie-O Foods from 1988 until 2006 when she retired.

Gary Ripka

Gary Ripka, age 61, of Melrose, died Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at the St. Benedict’s Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota following a long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Following Gary’s wish, a Family Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Patton-Schad Funeral Home with burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose at a later time.

Gary Conrad Ripka was born February 2, 1955 in Melrose to Kenneth and Alice (Voss) Ripka. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1974 and began working in the area and made his home in New Munich. He was an avid Minnesota Viking and Minnesota Twins spectator as well as the Melrose Dutchmen. Gary loved all animals and was always willing to take in a stray that needed a home. Rolling Dice and playing Penny Annie were family games that he enjoyed. He was a whiz at adding the dice and had his score as soon as they hit the table. A favorite classic TV show that Gary watched was “The Andy

Gloria was a former member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Swanville where she was a Sunday greeter and Wednesday substitute teacher and listener, and more recently American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie. She was a very talented sewer and did all types of needlework. She belonged to a horseshoe league. Gloria enjoyed gardening, birdwatching, and collecting angels. She also learned how to text and facebook to keep in touch with her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Frank, Swanville; children, Debra LeNore, Upsala; Frank J. (Cheri) Barthel, Long Prairie; Julie (Gordon) Posterick, Little Falls; and Sandra (Michael) Dorseth, Princeton; siblings, Janice (Dale) VanZee, Melrose; Shirley (Jim Hendrickson) Loxterkamp, Remer; Robert (Donna) Johnson, Alexandria; Gary (Debbie) Johnson, Little Falls; Allen (Sandra) Johnson, Pillsbury; and James (Linda) Johnson, Lindstrom; nine grandchildren, Lance Posterick, Justin Posterick, Crystal Okerman, Eric Dorseth, Alex Dorseth, Amanda Schmidt, Rick LeNore, Carrie Barthel, Annette Barthel, and Amanda Schmidt, and 11 great-grandchildren with one more on the way.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My parents left their sixfigure jobs to enter the ministry when I was in high school. That was 10 years ago, and my mom still regularly asks me to share my money with them. I don’t mind helping out once in a while, but this has been going on for a long time and I’ve started feeling bitterness about the requests and their bad financial decisions. My mom also tries to make me feel bad sometimes if I can’t afford to give them as much as they want. She constantly references their calling, and that I should want to help with that. How can I stop this pattern?

-Renee Dear Renee, This is not a healthy situation for anyone involved. By consistently giving or loaning your parents money, you’ve lost respect for them in the process. The relationship has become strained, and that’s a tough thing for anyone to deal with — especially in a parent-child situation. On top of all that, your mom sounds like a travel agent for guilt trips.

It seems like she’s working you over while implying it’s all really for God. That’s toxic.

Going into the ministry is an admirable thing. However, I remember a guy in the Bible named Paul who made tents while he conducted his ministry.

I’m paraphrasing, of course, but his line was something like, “If you don’t work, you don’t eat.” He had a job, remember?

So, suggesting that someone work outside the ministry while trying to do God’s work isn’t mean or unfair.

No one should do this to their child, and it’s going to be hard to unravel it all and turn it into a respectable situation.

I hope everyone will consider sitting down with a mature third party, and developing a situation where you’re no longer giving or lending them money.

In the meantime, read a book called Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud. After that and some objective intervention, I think this situation will become a lot healthier for everyone.

been blessed financially, and lots of times motivated by a survival point of view, but what do you do when you’re not motivated by that kind of thing anymore? How do you find and live out God’s purpose for your life?

You guys really have been blessed, and it sounds like you’ve worked hard for your wealth.

If you’ve ever studied psychology a little bit, you may remember Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Basically, once you get physiological and safety needs met, you feel a need to find other things to motivate you. It sounds like you’re a performance-oriented person. So am I. People like us get our relaxation and even fulfillment away from work in different ways than most people.

My suggestion would be to start thinking about ways you can serve and help other people or causes you care about. This could even mean becoming a stay-at-home mom for a while and really pouring into your kids, if you have them. If it’s something else, that’s okay too. How about this? You’ve obviously been thinking about this stuff for a while. Take a day all to yourself, away from everything and everybody, and bring along nothing but some food and drink, a bunch of notepads and pencils, and a Bible. Open up your mind and your heart to the things you care about and all the possibilities. You have to have a goal that is worthy in your mind, and you don’t have that right now.

I can’t tell you what your calling is, Lisa, but I can say this. There’s tons of joy and fulfillment to be found when you’re working in a way to serve the people and things that matter most in your life!

The Truth about Orlando

By Senator Paul Gazelka On June 12th, an American-born Islamic terrorist committed the worst terror attack in the United States since 9/11, gunning down 49 people at a nightclub in Orlando. In the wake of this tragedy focus has been on gun control. This is incredibly disturbing. As a leader in our community, it’s my duty to be honest and open with you and say what President Obama and media outlets won’t: What happened in Orlando was an act of terrorism, not a referendum on gun control. No 2nd Amendment restrictions could prevent this catastrophe.

As information continues to come out, it’s clear the solution to keeping Americans safe isn’t gun control. We need to address the issue that the FBI fell down on the job investigating this terrorist. We need to address the issue of allowing Syrian refugees into America is a horrible idea. If the FBI can’t effectively investigate Americanborn Islamic terrorists, why would President Obama allow a wave of new Muslim immigrants into our country who, national security experts themselves admit, cannot be effectively investigated.

The solution is simple. We need agencies charged with our nation’s security to be willing to investigate and pursue credible threats. We need to put those who pose a threat on the terrorist watch list, and when they’re on that list they cannot be allowed to purchase firearms until removed.

The NRA has made statements endorsing this measure. We need to detain anyone pledging allegiance to ISIS or to radical Islam. We need to block refugees from countries that are ground zero for radical Islamic recruitment and instead create a temporary safe place for those genuinely seeking refuge from persecution in a neutral location before we even consider shipping them into our borders.

Finally, we need leaders who are willing to call radical Islamic terrorism what it is without fear of being threatened and labeled Islamophobic. We cannot defeat our enemies if we cannot call them out for what they are.

America needs better leadership, and we need it this year. We are at a tipping point, and I encourage all of you to stand up this presidential election year and make your voice heard.

Under God, Indivisible -By Sheila Ripplinger The Pledge of Allegiance, was written by Francis Bellamy in 1892. He was the son of a Baptist minister and was himself a Christian socialist who was ordained as well. At the request of his boss while employed by ‘Youth’s Companion’, a family magazine, he was asked to compose something in arranging a patriotic program for schools around the Country.

Hence, this is where the heart warming words to our Country’s Pledge of Allegiance was born! The pledge was first recited in that same year in over 4,000 schools in the Eastern states.

By the use of the important word, ‘indivisible’, in this pledge, our forefathers surely knew the significance of being united and not divided to be a successful and great Nation! During the threats of godless communism, the Knights of Columbus and other godly Christian supporters summoned to insert the words ‘Under God’ in to the pledge. President Eisenhower approved without hesitation and signed the Bill in to law just in time for Flag Day, 1954.

With true American pride and honor that glows radiantly each time the Pledge of Allegiance is recited, the word ‘indivisible’ is still there alongside ‘under God’ as it should be. Could it be that this word is ignorantly being overlooked and ignored?

American people and government, in the foolish and belligerent behaviors that are constantly getting our attention, is that the word that should be omitted? There is so much focus on taking out ‘God’, that we overlook the other word that is in fact just as important to the whole rendition of the pledge!

Removing God would be like dividing numbers that cannot be divided without leaving a remainder. And the remainder- the part taken away, or disposed of, is forgotten. But although taken away and forgotten, we are left with an unsatisfactory answer to our formula that indeed leaves us with a sense of uncomfortable incompleteness.

So, when something is deemed indivisible, maybe we should take heed and not divide it or throw it out! Psalm 33:12 says, ‘Blessed is the Nation whose God is the Lord!’ This year we will still freely celebrate July 4th with great pride and thanksgiving for this amazing United States of America that we call home~ Thanks to the many heroes that have served to build our Freedom in to what it is today!

Along with the fireworks displays and Red, White, and Blue decorations, let’s vow to keep ‘Under God’ in the equation, joining together, indivisibly, we can make a powerful and righteous noise and explosion that will surely not be ignored!

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Tractor Rollover Program is starting

If all goes as planned, the ROPS rebate program (tractor rollover protection) will be rolled out by the Minnesota Dept. of Agriculture during the first week of July.

Look for news on the program to appear right after the July Fourth holiday. This is a new initiative for Minnesota, although several other states already have such programs in place. Legislation I authored during this past session allocated funding for MDA to start the program, which helps farmers with the financial cost of adding roll bar protection to older tractors.

In addition to public funding of $250,000 from the state, several agricultural companies stepped up with donations to help the program become established. Land O’Lakes, the CHS Foundation, Cargill, and ADM all pledged money that the Dept. of Ag. will collect and utilize to implement the program. In total, these four companies donated over $32,000.

Andrea Vaubel, assistant commissioner of agriculture, told me that they want to get information out to interested parties as soon as possible. She said, “People are already contacting the Department asking how to apply for the program.”

When the program becomes operational, a hotline will be available to call, in addition to a website. At first, going on-line will take you to the New York State website, as they will be assisting with the application process. It’s hoped a revamped website will be up and running by this fall.

With June being Dairy Month, Commissioner of Agriculture Dave Frederickson announced last week a list of the top dairy farms in Minnesota in regard to somatic cell count. In all, 136 operations throughout the state were honored by being named to the list. Of that total, 36 were from Stearns County. Those named will receive a certificate signed by the commissioner.

Somatic cell count is a key indicator of milk quality and of herd health. Lower numbers mean the milk is better for cheese production and also has a longer shelf life when sold as bottled milk. In most cases, processors pay a premium for milk with low somatic cell counts.

Nothing new to report regarding a possible special session of the Legislature. It’s too bad the tax bill was vetoed because it contained provisions that would have helped many residents. Folks say we should do things in a more bipartisan way. Well, that tax bill was done in such a fashion as over 90 percent of all House and Senate members, Republicans and Democrats, voted in favor of the bill. Disagreement with the governor over additional spending and transit in the metro area are still holding up any agreement to come back and re-pass the tax bill in addition to the bonding bill. Several cities, including Morris, have major infrastructure projects waiting for state dollars that are being held up in the bonding bill.

Top Summer Traumas for Pets and How to Weather Them There are so many things to love about summer. Parades down Main Street, fireworks filling the night sky and camping beneath the stars, just to name a few.

But while these warm-weather attractions might be fun for us humans, they can be frightening and even dangerous for pets.

Here are a few tips on how to help your pet enjoy summertime festivities as much as you do.

THINGS THAT GO BANG! Fireworks can be so upsetting for pets that more dogs and cats run away from home on the 4th of July than any other holiday. It’s one of the most important times of year to make sure your pet is safe and secure. The Associated Humane Societies offer these recommendations for helping your pet stay put on Independence Day: Take your pet out for a walk before fireworks begin to exercise, relax and go “potty.”

Keep them inside during fireworks with the windows securely closed. They may even feel most comfortable in a small interior room. Be sure to remove any items that your pet could destroy, or that would be harmful if chewed or ingested.

If your pet is microchipped, make sure your information is up to date.

If your pet is extremely sensitive to loud noises, talk to your veterinarian before the holiday weekend. He or she will offer ways to help alleviate your pet’s fear and anxiety.

For sensitive pets, storms can be terrifying. Whether they are scared of the light, the noise, the smells, or even the change in barometric pressure, a storm can set off a series of behaviors that can be dangerous for your phobic pet. Some pets may shake,

Teach them that storms don’t have to be scary. Move them to a windowless room or a basement where the exposure to the storm will be reduced, or distract them by playing a game with one of their favorite toys. You can even reserve special toys or treats for use only during a storm, so that your pet associates the frightening stimulus with a positive behavior. If thunder is the biggest issue, you could also consider investing in a white noise machine or turning on a bathroom fan to drown out some of the boom.

TENT CITY There’s no better time to dust off your camping gear, set out for the wilderness and sleep beneath the stars. But while the Great Outdoors may seem like an ideal vacation destination for your pet, remember that they will also be exposed to new and unfamiliar territory. Here are a few tips to make camping more fun for everyone: Purchase a pet first aid kit from a pet

supply store, or make your own pet first aid kit. Even something as small as a bug bite or splinter can make for a very unhappy pooch if untreated.

Bring the right food for your pet.

While campfire fare might seem like a fun treat for your pets, ingestion of fatty foods can cause pancreatitis and other digestive issues, which even a first aid kit won’t cure. Best bet, bring along his favorite pet food and keep the campfire treats to yourself.

Respect your pet’s physical limitations. Domesticated animals may seem like they simply can’t wait to “run wild,” but they can get as out of shape as the rest of us. So don’t expect them to climb a mountain, hike miles of trails or swim across the entire lake.

The best part of summer is spending time having fun with your pets. By thinking ahead, you can make sure that whatever you do this season, everyone has a great time - pets included.

DNR Urges People to Use Water Wisely The month of July is, on average, the warmest of the year and is a time when many lawn sprinkler systems are running regularly. During this warm summer season, the Department of Natural Resources reminds people to use water wisely.

In most communities in Minnesota, water used for lawn sprinkling comes from groundwater, which cities pump through pipes to homes.

“Many communities are taking steps to use water more efficiently,” DNR Water Conservation Program Coordinator Carmelita Nelson said.

The DNR urges people to follow the pattern and reduce the amount of water they use on their lawns. In turn, they’ll be conserving the groundwater their communities depend on for basic necessities, like drinking water.

High summer water use is a big expense for cities. For example, a city may use only four wells in the winter months to provide water to residents, but in the summer months they may need 15-18 wells to supply water, primarily for residential lawn watering.

“This is a lot of extra infrastructure just for emerald lawns in July and August,” Nelson said. “To minimize the sum-

mer spike, many cities are reducing water use on city-owned properties and encouraging residents to follow suit. We all need to be mindful of our water use,” said Nelson, “and do our part this summer to protect our water sources for current and future generations. In Minnesota, dormant lawns usually return to green naturally. If you do irrigate, be a smart irrigator.”

Some conservation tips • Check city ordinances to find out when lawn watering is allowed. Often, lawn watering is prohibited during the middle of the day or there may be a restriction on the days people may water.

• Lawns only need about 1 inch of water per week, although this may vary depending on the soil. To figure out how long it takes for a sprinkler to provide one inch of water, set an empty tuna can in the yard and determine the amount of time it takes to fill up when watering the lawn.

That is the amount of time to water the lawn each week, without rain.

• If it rains, reduce watering appropriately. For automatic sprinkler systems, a new rain sensor can save 60 percent on water use. Since 2003, state law has required sensors that shut off sprinkler systems if it has rained recently. Replacing old spray heads with new precision spray nozzles can result in 30 percent water savings.
