Mental toughness is finding fuel on an empty tank -By Harvey Mackay Phil Mickelson recently became the oldest golfer to win one of the four major professional golf championships by taking it one mental stroke at a time.

Confidence and the physical part of golf has never been an issue for Mickelson, but he recently talked about his mind and the mental lapses that were costing him. He hadn’t won a tournament on the PGA Tour in two years or a major championship in eight years, until winning the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in South Carolina in May. Mickelson said: “I’m trying to use my mind like a muscle and just expand it because as I’ve gotten older, it’s been more difficult for me to maintain a sharp focus, a good visualization and see the shot.

“Physically I feel like I’m able to perform and hit the shots that I’ve hit throughout my career, and I feel like I can do it every bit as well as I have. But I’ve got to have that clear picture and focus,” Mickelson added.

And that’s exactly what he did. He didn’t hit a shot until he had a clear picture in his mind of what the shot was supposed to look like.

Another golfing great, Arnold Palmer, said: “My father always said to me, ‘Remember, whatever game you play, 90 percent of success is from the shoulders up.’”

Famed NFL football coach Vince Lombardi said: “Mental toughness is essential to success. You’ve got to be mentally tough.

Mental toughness is many things and rather difficult to explain. Its qualities are sacrifice

and self-denial. Also, most importantly, it is combined with a perfectly disciplined will that refuses to give in. It’s a state of mind – you could call it character in action.”

“Champions aren’t made in the gyms,” according to Muhammad Ali. “Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.”

After Tom Brady won one of his seven Super Bowl championships he was asked what makes his team so special. His answer: “Mental toughness.”

Psychologists have defined mental toughness for athletes as “having the natural or developed psychological edge that enables you to: generally, cope better than your opponents with the many demands (competition, training, lifestyle) that sport places on a performer; specifically, be more consistent and better than your opponents in remaining determined, focused, confident, and in control under pressure.”

Note a trend here. Most people attribute mental toughness to elite athletes. I disagree.

Being mentally tough can apply to anyone in any profession. Wikipedia defines it as a measure of individual resilience and confidence that may predict success in sport, education and the workplace.

Mental toughness is keeping everything together when everyone expects you to fall apart.

Mental toughness grows in the moments when you think you can’t go on but you keep going anyway. Anyone can give up. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that’s true mental toughness.

Mental toughness comes into play when the going gets tough. Achievements are more rewarding when you work hard for something.

Fortunately, mental toughness can be cultivated and developed. Start by making a commitment to succeed. Only focus on what you can control. Be confident and thrive on adversity. Learn from your failures, but don’t dwell on them. The past is valuable training -nothing more.

Don’t complain or show emotions. Train your mind to be stronger than your emotions or else you’ll lose yourself every time. In sports, you don’t want to show your opponent that you are hurting or tired.

Be well conditioned. Physical strength will get you to the starting line, but mental strength will get you to the finish line.

Ten-time NCAA basketball championship coach John Wooden said: “I always stress condition with my basketball players. I don’t mean physical condition only. You cannot attain and maintain physical condition unless you are morally and mentally conditioned.”

Solicit feedback. Listening to advice or criticism is not easy for most people. In today’s business environment, where the landscape is changing rapidly, learning how to accept feedback is a key skill for advancing.

Everyone can improve performance.

History has shown us that the most celebrated winners usually encountered heartbreaking obstacles before they triumphed.

They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats. They have grit and resilience.

Mackay’s Moral: Mental toughness is what separates champions from near champions.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Trapping

My first experience with trapping involved gophers.

I had heard some very vague details from a couple of my buddies, who said they were going to begin trapping gophers to earn some money.

They planned to trap gophers for the local farmers, hopefully to be paid a dime for each pocket gopher and a nickel for a striped gopher. In my mind, I envisioned harvesting sufficient gophers to make as much as $.50 per day. Wow! I was going to be rich.

I was very vague about the actual mechanics of trapping gophers. At the age of six, I couldn’t wait to get started. One afternoon, old Shep and I spent about 3 hours setting traps for that pocket gopher at the end of the field below the barn. I would find where the tunnel was below the dirt piles and Shep would assist by helping dig the tunnels large enough to fit the trap. Some of the 6 traps were placed in such a way that the gopher would never wander into it. A couple were placed improperly in the tunnel so that the chain on the trap actually blocked the tunnel. In other words I needed some additional training in trapping. The next morning there were two traps filled with dirt

and four traps empty.

I told Pa about my lack of success and he said he would show me how to trap gophers. First he said that 6 traps for one gopher was dumb, since I was just teaching a gopher about traps and that if I planned to trap more than one gopher, I’d need to bring the pickup to carry all of the needed traps, covers, stakes and all of the rest of the stuff I would need.

We pulled all six traps and created two new sets. They were carefully located in the tunnel, deep enough to be covered with dirt so that they were level with the floor of the tunnel. A u-shaped heavy metal stake was used to anchor the trap chain. An old license plate covered the excavation and covered by dirt to stop any light entry. The next morning I had the gopher. Since pocket gophers live alone, I also removed the other trap.

Two of the traps that were removed from the original trap site were placed near striped gopher holes and the next day one of them had a striped gopher.

Shep enjoyed the trapping process. He would tell me where a trapped gopher was located and was eager to dispatch the trapped gopher. He took pride in being able to display our catch to the land owners.

In later years, I made some changes in the trap setting methods. I found that a pencil sized hole in the trap cover directly above the trap, caused the gopher to investigate the hole and more readily step in the trap. I also became aware of a grab trap, which when set was put into the dirt exit hole while the

After two plus years of preparation, the MLA launched an aquatic invasive species (AIS) monitoring program that will help identify AIS early enough to address the issue in a timely manner. The program is modeled after Big Birch Lake’s approach. Dan Ziegler, Mound Lake’s AIS representative, spent time with Big Birch Lake’s AIS monitoring team to learn their approach and then brought it back to Mound Lake for implementation. MLA wants to thank the Big Birch Lake association for their collaboration and for sharing their best practice approach. MLA also thanks Grey Eagle merchants Tim Ainali of Eagle Manufacturing and Steve Neville of Neville Hardware for donating their expertise and time in producing the special tools Mound Lake monitors will be using in the fight against AIS.

Howard H. Carstens

H o w a r d H. Carstens age 87 of Melrose, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, May 28, 2021 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 7 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose with Deacon Ernie Kociemba officiating. Inurnment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Howard Herman Carstens was born August 18, 1933 in Belgrade, Minnesota to Herman and Kathryn (Mohs) Carstens. He graduated from Belgrade High School and continued his education at Brown Institute. Howard served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Darmstadt, Germany during the Korean War, conflict. He was married to Dorothy Breitbach on October 8, 1955 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. He worked at AT&T from 1954 to 1972 in Minneapolis and Wyoming, Minnesota. He started his fiberglass career at

Fiberglass Engineering in Wyoming, Minnesota and later owned and operated Carstens Industries, Inc. in Melrose. Carstens Industries was inducted into the Minnesota Waterfall Hall of Fame for all the donations made over the years.

Howard was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, American Legion Post 101 where he served as Commander, Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050, Melrose Lions Club, president of Melrose Chamber, volunteered on the Wyoming Fire Department for 13 years and Fire Chief for five years. Howard received an American Legion Community Award and Community Service Award, Ducks Unlimited Conservation Award, Melvin Jones Fellowship Lions Award, and Helen Keller Sight Award.

He was an avid hunter and has now received his “duck wings”. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and was a jack of all trades.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Carstens of Melrose; children, Cynthia Carstens of Fair Oaks, California, Wayne (Jeannie) Carstens of Hawaii, James “Jim” (Brenda) Carstens of Melrose, and Kim (Tim) Piehl of Baxter; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Betty Lou Miller of New London, Julius Carstens of Monticello, Mary (Ed) Lunke of Duluth, and Tom (Beth) Carstens of North Carolina.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dorothy Stalberger, Shirley Hanson, and Jean Edstrom; and brothers, Allen Carstens and Richard “Dick” Carstens.

Memorials are preferred.

He was a member of St. John Vianney Church in Long Prairie and was township supervisor since 2011. Mark enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, camping, demolition derbies, and loved spending time with his family, especially with his children.

Survivors include his wife, Deidre Ruegemer of Villard; children, Mariah, Aubrie, Carter, Alayna, Liam, Grahm, and Hadley; parents, Timothy and Marion Ruegemer of Villard; grandfather, Robert (Gen) Thieschafer of Long Prairie; brothers and sisters, Steve (Michelle) Ruegemer of Sauk Centre, Becky (Glen) Christen of Sauk Centre, Sandra (Chris) Greene of Maple Grove, Nick (Jen) Ruegemer of Sauk Centre, and Brian (Naomi) Ruegemer of Sauk Centre; and many nieces and nephews.

Mark was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sylvester and Rose Mary Ruegemer, and Erma Thieschafer; and sisterin-law, Deanna Smith.

Serving as casket bearers were Steve Ruegemer, Nick Ruegemer, Brian Ruegemer, Glen Christen, Chris Greene, Tim Roers, Dom Gergen, and Dan Gergen. Cross bearer will be Alexandra Christen.

Sharon C. Arnzen, age 67 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 28, 2021, after a long battle with cancer, at her home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 3 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and the Christian Mothers. Sharon enjoyed gardening, bowling, craft sales, garage sales, but most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Mark James Ruegemer was born October 19, 1983 in Alexandria, Minnesota to Timothy and Marion (Thieschafer) Ruegemer. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 2003 and from Alexandria Technical College for carpentry in 2005. Mark worked for Thieschafer Construction and for J. Wiener Construction before becoming part owner of J & M Construction in 2006. He was united in marriage to Deidre Gergen on September 29, 2007 at St. John Vianney Church in Long Prairie. Mark began farming with his parents on the family dairy farm while continuing to work in construction.

Delores A. Becker

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie for Delores Becker, age 96 who passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 29 at CentraCare Nursing Home in Long Prairie. The Rev. Omar Guanchez and Rev. Mitchel Bechtold officiated. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Long Prairie.

Delores Arlene Becker was born Sept 1, 1924 in Round Prairie Township, Todd County, MN to Carl and Anna (Bense) Schwanke.

She was baptized and confirmed at St John’s Lutheran Church, Grey Eagle MN; graduated from 8th grade at District 142 Country School and graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1943. On Oct 14, 1947 she married Leo Becker at St. Mary’s of Mt. Carmel Church in Long Prairie. They were married for 47 years.

They were blessed with 3 children Beverly,

David, and Mark.

Delores held numerous jobs throughout her life, including North Western National Life Insurance Co. of Minneapolis, Swifts in Sauk Centre, and Hart Press in Long Prairie.

Delores spent 2 years living in Prescott, Arizona working at the Aquarium Pump Company before returning to Long Prairie and working at Banta Publications until her retirement.

Delores enjoyed a variety of hobbies including, cards, dominos, casino trips, quilt making, dancing, and refurbishing old dolls to look like new again. She was also able to travel to all 50 states and many foreign countries. Some of her favorites being Ireland, England, Spain, Morocco, Africa, and the Holy Land. However, there was no greater joy for Grandma D than her family including, 8 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. She will remain forever in our hearts.

Survived by her children Beverly (Lowell) Dugan of Prescott, Arizona, David (Jayme) Becker of Long Prairie, Mark (Donna) Becker of Long Prairie.

Delores is preceded in death by her parents Anna and Carl Schwanke, husband Leo, and sister DeLaine Friedrichs.

In the road report the board discussed charges for dust control. Going forward the minimum charge for dust control will be 100 feet on a motion from Sup. Johnson and a second from Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed. The contractor will plan on starting spraying the second week of May. Some roads will need work before the spraying will be applied.

Clean up day will be Saturday, May 22 from 9-11 am on Chicago Ave. in Burtrum. Prices will be the same as last year: appliances $10, electronics $5, car tires $2, big truck tires $4, and tractor tires $10.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $58,475.39.

Burnhamville Township • April 27, 2021 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held April 27, 2021 at the Burtrum Community Center with sanitizing and social distancing in place. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit, Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Erv Herdering and Ervin Muellner were also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of March 30, 2021 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received call about Long Lake Access Porta Potty. Lake association wanted to know who is going to pay for it. Sup. Johnson will check into it. The board discussed a reasonable rate for beaver control. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to set the township beaver rate at $75. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed. The township also received a letter from Community Corrections asking for a donation to purchase tools. As the township uses the Sentence to Serve crews sometimes for ditch clearing Sup. Johnson made a motion to donate $500 to Todd County Community Corrections. Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

Ervin F. Zierden, age 82 of Albany, passed away May 25, 2021 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home, Albany, MN. Christian burial funeral services were held at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Albany on Saturday, May 29, 2021. Burial was at the parish cemetery.

Ervin Francis Zierden was born October 20, 1938 in New Munich to Aloysius and Emma (Ertl) Zierden. He was united in marriage to Kathleen Steckel on September 20, 1965 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Waite Park, but later divorced. He served Army National Guard out of Sauk Centre, MN. Places he was employed at Landy Packing, Robell, and Fingerhut.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Albany, and Seven Dolors parish, Albany.

He enjoyed playing cards, watching westerns on tv, visiting family and friends, traveling, and camping. He also would lend a helping hand if he could.

He is survived by his children, Laurie (Kevin) Voltin, Hayfield; Linda Zierden, St. Cloud; Allen (Sharon) Zierden, Albany, and Randy Zierden, St. Cloud; 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 1 step-grandchild.

Great River Regional Library (GRRL) will kick off the annual Summer Reading Program (SRP) on Monday, June 7th, continuing through Saturday, August 7th.

Registration begins on Monday, June 7th, and can be done in the Beanstack app, visiting griver.beanstack.org, or by visiting your local library during open hours. Hours can be found at griver.org/locations. Participants can track their reading in the Beanstack app or by using a paper slip, which you can return to your local library.

Participants will also be eligible for prize drawings at the end of the program. Each branch offers a unique assortment of SRP prizes!

This summer’s theme is Reading Colors Your World. The broad motif of “colors” provides a context for exploring humanity, nature, culture, and science, as well as developing programming that demonstrates how libraries and reading can expand your world through kindness, growth, and community. Library users young and old will be encouraged to be creative, try new things, explore art, and find beauty in diversity. The program is open to all kids, ages 0-18. The program divided into three categories: pre-readers (ages 0-3), ages 3 to 12, and teens.

I think it takes a lot of time, reflection, insight, and self-evaluation before anything can be termed a calling. I know this is true in some cases, because that’s how it happened with me. I can’t honestly tell you that when I first started on radio, or began formally teaching and writing I knew it was God’s plan for my life. I knew early on I was drawn to it, and felt there was a need for it, but it took a while for me to understand and accept that it was what I was really meant to do.

I hope this helps a little bit, Tony. Just be honest with yourself, think about it, and pray about it a lot, too. God wants what’s best for you, so make sure you include Him in everything. It worked for me. I’ve been doing what I do for nearly three decades now, and I still love it. I’m convinced that it is God’s calling on my life.

I started driving in the 70s and back then cars didn’t even have a computer in them. I don’t know if I want to be sharing the road with robots. I just want to know if they are safe, how they work, and when they will be here so I can start looking out for them.

We started to see it used as a safety enhancer in vehicles a while back to aide you in the way of helping to prevent collisions while backing up and when getting too close to someone in front of you. The systems would be able to reduce throttle and apply the brakes if you were in a “bad spot” and in danger of a collision.

The tech has now advanced with the enhancement of laser sensors and GPS and super high definition cameras and much more that allow the cars to navigate to destinations and avoid collisions.

The cars are on the road now being tested and chances are you have seen one and don’t even know it. They have logged over a million miles on America’s roads. As for how safe they are is yet to be seen. The future is headed our way!

sound more like things related to a Body Control Module or BCM for short. You need to have it diagnosed to know for sure before you spend the money to replace it but this is a good time to address the “hacking” you bring up. Your car being a 2005 Impala it’s not susceptible to the hacking level you may have seen on the news. The newer cars have been given so much tech that the electronic systems run things like throttle, brake and steering and can be accessed through the Telematics systems and with the right circumstances and information a smart hacker could gain access to some systems controlling the vehicle. Manufacturers are working diligently to stop this from happening and hopefully it will never be a problem. Consult your local mechanic and talk about your symptoms. The car will need to be scanned and the effected systems checked and repaired.
