Severe weather hit the area over Memorial weekend with thunderstorms early Sunday morning, early Monday morning and again Monday evening. Monday's storms consisted of high winds and heavy rain. The photo above was damage near Little Birch Lake that occured early Monday morning (photo by Mary Delong). Monday evening was another strong set of storms that produced tornados in both Eagle Bend (Todd County) and Forada (Douglas County).

Find your value -By Harvey Mackay As he lay dying, a father gave a watch to his son.

“Here is a watch your grandfather gave me,” he said.

“It is almost 200 years old. Go to the jewelry store and see how much they offer you.”

The son went to the jewelry store, came back to his father, and said, “They offered $100 because it is so old.”

The father said, “Well, try the pawnshop.”

The son came back later and said, “The pawnshop offered only $20 because it has a scratch.”

The father then asked his son to go to the museum and show them the watch.

The son silently questioned his father’s judgement, but still, willing to act on his last wishes, he went to the museum. When he came back, he said to his father, “The curator offered me $375,000 to include this very rare piece in their precious antique collection.”

The father responded, “I wanted to show you that the right place will value you in the right way. Don’t find yourself in the wrong place and get angry because you are not valued.

Never stay in a place where someone doesn’t see your value, or you don’t feel appreciated.”

His message is a commencement address of sorts, no matter what your stage of life, job situation or even your age. I share this advice with my own children and grandchildren, people whom I mentor, and anyone who is wondering what to do next with their lives.

I feel so strongly about it that I wrote a book, “You Haven’t Hit Your Peak Yet,” filled with encouraging examples of what can be possible when you collect your confidence and take inventory of your unique skills and abilities.

We might feel that we are worthless, but

no matter what has happened or what will happen, we will never lose our value. We are still priceless to those who love us. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do, or whom we know, but by who we are. We are special. Don’t ever forget it.

We can all use a boost in our self-confidence or self-worth occasionally. Lately I’m sensing this even more with the state of our country and the economy. Even the great ones need a pat on the back at some point.

What is really important to you? How do you want to conduct your life? What are you willing to do – or not do – to have the life you want?

It is reasonable to expect that most adults will do their best to do the right thing. And that has taken on a new importance in the world we live in, where our words and deeds are often subject to cameras and shared online for the world to see. But having an established value system goes beyond that – it takes the guesswork out. Because you have already thought about how you want to live, and be perceived, your responses and reactions can often be automatic.

You won’t even have to think about your actions.

So, we go back to the “commencement” address.

Newly minted graduates, the ink barely dry on their diplomas, are starting careers and hoping their educations have prepared them for the challenges ahead. Will they know their value, and their values, as they move into the work world and face questions that they have never had to answer?

Job hunters of all ages, flaunting years of experience and the battle scars to prove it, wonder what direction their work lives should

be taking and whether a career change could best fulfill their goals. Many already know their value, but are they prepared to defend their values in a new environment?

And on the other end of the spectrum, those who are preparing for retirement after years of both stunning achievements and utter disappointments, reflect on what they are proud of and what they wish they could change. Do they realize the value they brought to their workplaces and the people they worked with?

Are they satisfied that their values were evident and respected?

No matter what stage of life you are graduating from, you have value. It cannot be calculated only in dollars or job titles or awards.

Your value, and your values, matter to those around you.

included The Gene Autry Show followed by the Barn Dance from Nashville.

Something you didn't want to miss.

Another daytime entertainment included KASM Radio from Albany. Their programming included old time music all day. I especially remember that music on Sunday afternoon. I may still listen to that station on Sunday afternoons today.

Radio gave us a lot of opportunities to imagine what the world was like away from the farm. Our minds created a picture of what the radio personalities looked like and if we were able to see them in person, we were usually quite surprised.

We depended on the radio for the news.

It was local news, similar to today. They reported local happenings and weather.

The only national news I remember was the World News in the morning, but it was hard to hear, due to the fading of the signal on a regular basis.

Wow, now we have TV. We got the most technically advanced aerial and were set up for about 6 channels. We were ready! We did get one channel good and 5 other channels with constant snow storms accompanied by other distortions. TV in those days was actually a disappointment.

Rabbit ears and tin foil sheets helped, but it was actually more entertaining to go back to our previous radio entertainment.

I am reminded on a daily basis how many days until the TV system will be installed. I actually enjoy no TV. It brings back memories of times past.

No TV

We recently moved to a different residence. There was a TV in the living room, which offered 3 channels, so I attempted to replace that TV with one of our own. The final result is that now we have no channels and the TV-internet is still a week away. This left us with no TV for about a month. I began to think about not having a TV in my parent's house until 1958 and what we did for entertainment before TV. We, of course didn't miss TV, in those days, because we never had it. What did we do?

I read books, spent time in the woods and helped with the farm duties. Along with the farm work, there was a radio in the barn that was always on if the lights were turned on. This filled an entertainment need with some shows that some of you may remember. There was Jack Benny and Rochester, his loyal butler. The Lone Ranger and Tonto. Roy Rogers, The FBI in Pease and War. Tales well calculated to keep you in Suspense. Amos and Andy.

Burns and Allen. Sargent Preston of the Mounted Police. Mr Keen Tracer of Lost Persons. There were also some spooky shows like The Shadow, Inner Sanctum, The Green Hornet and the Whistler. A lot of opportunities to be entertained by radio.

If you went into the house, you probably would hear an episode of Ma Perkins or Our Gal Sunday. The evening radio show would be Our Miss Brooks or Edward R Murrow.

Florentine M. Hens, age 97 of Elrosa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, May 26, 2022 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, June 2 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating and Abbott John Klassen, O.S.B. concelebrating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Florentine Mary Michels was born on December 4, 1924 in Lake George Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Margaret (Diedrich) Michels. She was united in marriage to Richard Hens on September 19, 1944 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Florentine was a custodian at Belgrade Schools for 16 years. She raised her family on the farm and wasn’t afraid to help out with chores. She was a member and the oldest parishioner for many years at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa and the Christian Women. Florentine enjoyed making beautiful doilies for her family and friends, crocheting, flowers, gardening, mowing the lawn, shaking dice, and enjoyed driving the John Deere 720 while baling hay.

Survivors include her children, Dale Hens of Belgrade, Diane Hens (friend, Kevin) of Melrose, Robert (Joyce) Hens of Melrose, and Karen (Ronald) Altendahl of Melrose; ten grandchildren, Cheryl, Kim, Angela, Mary, Cynthia, Amanda, John, Stephanie, Thomas, and Crystal; 26 great-grandchildren, Cody, Kyle, Olivia, Alisha, Eric, Shannon, Nicholas, Jamie, Krista, Jenna, Logan, Dylan, Paige, Alexis, Katlynn, Brandon, Gabrielle, Kyle, Mira, Nadia, Ivan, Oliver, Brinley, MacKenzie, Dominic, Alexander, and one on the way; greatgreat-granddaughter, Ava; and sister, Lorraine Imdieke of Melrose.

Florentine was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hens on October 29, 1994; parents; grandson, Gary Boecker on May 20, 1982; and sister, Loretta Imdieke on March 23, 1969.

Memorials are preferred.

Violet Caroline Vos was born April 15, 1929 in St. Francis, Minnesota to Conrad and Mary (Rakotz) Vos and grew up in Holdingford.

After working at the Melrose Hotel, she met and married Richard “Dick” Fern and resided in Melrose. She was a seamstress and also worked with Dick on their reupholstery business in their home. Later she worked at Fingerhut and at Jennie-O in Melrose, but was glad to retire when her grandchildren came along, which happened to be all boys. After living in Avon, she spent her last few years in Long Prairie at the CentraCare Care Center. Vi enjoyed sewing, drawing, and puzzle books.

Survivors include her children, Alice (Ron) Schauer of Gilroy, California, Karen (Pat) Pfau of Freeport, and Nancy (Steve) Salzl of Avon; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brother, Arnold Vos; and sister, Alice Ripka.

Violet was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Fern on February 27, 1986; parents; and brothers, Vernon, Jerome, and Gilbert Vos. Memorials are preferred to the CentraCare Care Center in Long Prairie.

History Book Discussion to be held June 11

The Grey Eagle Public Library Association will host a discussion of its book A History of Grey Eagle, Minnesota on Saturday, June 11, at 10:30 a.m. at the library.

Joan Renee (Klein) Wall

Joan Renee (Klein) Wall, age 48, of Melrose, Minnesota, entered Jesus’ embrace on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, shortly following a diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

A funeral service was held at Wednesday, June 1, at River of Life Church in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, with Rev. Kyle Peterson officiating. Inurnment was held later that day at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Rosholt, South Dakota.

Joan was born to Elroy and Patsy Klein on September 10, 1973, in Wheaton, Minnesota.

She attended Rosholt Elementary and High School, graduating in 1991. Joan continued her education at the University of South Dakota graduating with an accounting degree in 1995.

She worked briefly in Rock Rapids, Iowa, and then Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

On November 22, 2003, Joan married Mitchell “Mitch” Wall, the love of her life.

They moved to Springfield, Missouri, in 2005 where she worked at Central Bible College while Mitch also worked and attended school there. After Mitch earned his degree, they moved to Melrose in 2011 to pastor Harvest Church in Freeport, Minnesota. Joan worked for the Minnesota District of Assemblies of God and the City of Freeport.

Joan’s biggest joy was her relationship with Jesus. Reading and journaling were passions of hers, and you could see the Holy Spirit well up within her whenever she talked about her faith. She found deep satisfaction in discipling others, especially those who were curious and wanted to grow deeper in their faith. Joan was authentic - able to hold a standard of truth and excellence while still being compassionate and honest about difficulties. Never seeking to be the center of attention, she still was willing to boldly step outside of her comfort zone to minister to and bless others. If you needed a listening ear or a word of encouragement, she was one you would call.

Joan had many interests. She was an excellent marksman who could outshoot her husband. She had an eye for beauty and was always found behind the camera capturing loved ones, their beloved dogs, and nature. She enjoyed the outdoors and would fondly recall camping and family vacations along with cherished memories growing up on the farm.

Joan also loved motorcycle rides with her husband, visiting Japanese gardens, or simply sitting and listening to the peaceful sound of water. A beloved aunt, she was wonderful about engaging with her nephews and niece.

She also loved horses; taking riding lessons and working with horse therapy classes in Springfield.

Other interests and favorites included NASCAR, The Big Bang Theory TV show, New Kids on the Block Christmas album, Peyton Manning, Rush Limbaugh, sunshine, daisies, sunflowers, and the color yellow.

Those she leaves behind are her husband, Mitchell; her parents, Elroy and Patsy Klein; brother, Mathew (Nadia) Klein; sister, Sarah (Justin) Wolfswinkel and their sons, Griffin and Hudson; parents-in-law, James and Bonnie Wall; brother-in-law, Brian (Michelle) Wall and their children, Isaiah, Ella, and Caleb; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Those preceding her in death were her grandparents; uncles, Arthur Hoyt and Michael Wagner; aunt, Roxie Klein; and cousins, Pauline Theisen and Blain Brandenburger.

Some Thoughts On Gun Violence

By Roger Lahr The recent Texas school murders of children has shocked our nation. Tragic as these school shooting are, they are relatively rare.

The first emotional reaction is to blame guns and call for more restrictive laws, but isn’t it interesting that cities with the most stringent gun laws have the highest murder rates? Will more restrictive laws be the answer? I think not, the bad guys will always have guns.

I believe we need to concentrate on the “Why” instead of the “How”. It is virtually impossible to stop someone from murdering someone. Guns, especially hand guns, are just the most convenient. The Pew Research Center found that in 2020 there were 45,222 gun related deaths, 54% were suicide, 43% murders, 3% undetermined. Because suicide is generally impulsive, waiting periods prior to purchasing a gun have been proven to be effective.

So why is our society producing young men who think it’s a good idea to shoot up a school or other gathering? Although conclusive data may not yet be available, I believe we can point to some contributing factors.

Internet communication and our cell phones have substituted for family time, absentee fathers, the recent Covid restrictions limiting socialization causing depression, drug abuse, decline of religion in our culture, the lack of respect for one another including our laws and law enforcement, and the general societal divisiveness.

Policy emphasis should be on limiting criminals and the mentally ill from obtaining firearms not compromising the 2nd Amendment, our most effective, time responsive tool for self-protection, a right we should always safeguard.

But if you’re in a season of life where you don’t need a career income or workplace identity to be fulfilled, or if you just want to be home with your child, that’s a really cool thing, too. And hey, if you like your job, there’s no reason you couldn’t perform some HR functions from home on a contract basis, like 20 to 25 hours a week while the little one’s napping, with minimal strain on motherhood.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 1994 Stealth RT without the turbocharged engine. I have gone through 2 new batteries in a short period of time. Is it possible that a failing alternator can ruin a battery? If so, I would like to know if there is a way to check if the alternator has actually failed. Are there specific testing methods that can be used to narrow the cause down? I listen to your show faithfully. Thanks for your time.

-Karen in Fargo Dear Karen, A failing alternator can ruin a battery in a short period of time. If it’s overcharging or is draining current when off, it will discharge the battery after it sits for extended periods. Even if it does not sit long enough to run completely down it can cause the battery to fail due to its heavy discharge/charge cycles.

To check the alternator, you need to have a charging system analysis done with a charging system tester. This will show the internal operation of the alternator, diodes, field, and ability to charge at idle and at higher rpm but will not show a drain. To find a drain they will need to perform is a current drain test. Most shops with this type of tool will also have an electronic battery testing tool. It is possible that you have had a run of bad luck with two bad batteries. It has happened to us in our shop before.

erly. Repairs involve phaser replacement or sometimes an entire engine. The best way to prevent this from happening is with routine oil changes. Ford recommends using their factory specified oil or something of better ratings and a Ford genuine filter. There are copies of this filter on the market so make sure you are getting the genuine Ford product. As for time intervals we would suggest changing the oil at three months. The short trips are harder on the oil and engine as the engine does not get up to operating temperature for a long enough period to completely burn off all traces of moisture in the oil which can result in sludge in the engine.

Legislative session closes with much left on table Our legislative session ended rather quietly this past Sunday, minus the last-minute rush of bills to be passed before the midnight deadline. Only one of the major supplemental budget bills – the one dealing with agriculture, drought relief and broadband – made it to the governor’s desk to become law. Several others were close, including a major tax bill, but most of the others had spending differences so far apart that conferees were not able to come to agreement of them.

It came down to the issue of how to deal with our state’s huge state budget surplus, now at about $7 billion after funding the replacement of the Unemployment Trust Fund at a cost of $2.7 billion. The two sides had vastly different ideas, with the DFL wanting to spend much of it, while Republicans wanted to see most of it go for tax relief. The House plan was to increase the state budget by 15 percent, while over in the Senate the emphasis was on eliminating the tax on Social Security and lowering the first tier rate on Minnesota’s income tax.

After the session had just adjourned, talk was already spreading that we’d be called back for a special session. I’m not so sure. In most cases, agreement on legislation is reached prior to us being called back, and that’s going to be difficult. The only two spending bills that were close to agreement in the final days of session were the tax bill and a bonding bill. It looked as if the bonding bill was going to make it to the floor, but last-minute negotiations during the weekend failed to resolve an impasse between the two chambers.

It seemed a bit unusual to still be talking

about drought aid for farmers when most parts of the state are having planting delays caused by too much rain this year. The bill was delayed by the inclusion of millions for dollars for the DNR in the House version. In fact, the $10 million for tree planting was more than the amount designated to help farmers deal with the high cost of purchasing forage for their livestock during last summer’s drought. In the end, the House DFL agreed to lower the DNR portion down to $5 million, while the amount set aside for aid to farmers was actually increased to just over $8 million in direct grants.

There will also be a large influx of spending for broadband here in Minnesota. At least $60 million in federal dollars was designated for that purpose, along with $25 million in state funding. The concern with relying on the federal money is that we don’t know for sure when it will be released. That’s the reason no broadband construction was done last year as the federal dollars were not made available. So it’s good that at least some state dollars can get projects going this year while we wait for the release of the much bigger chunk of federal money.

Spring planting is very much being delayed this year by the cold and wet weather we are experiencing. Crop insurance deadlines are fast approaching for corn and soybeans, while the deadline for wheat has already passed.

Farmers may still elect to plant corn past the June 1 deadline because of the current high price for the commodity, but they will have their crop insurance guarantee drop every day past the deadline.

Great River Regional Library Summer Reading Program Great River Regional Library (GRRL) will kick off the annual Summer Reading Program (SRP) on Monday, June 6, continuing through Saturday, August 6.

Registration begins on Monday, June 6, in the Beanstack app, on griver.beanstack.org, or by visiting your local library during open hours. Participants track their reading in the Beanstack app or by using a paper slip, which you return to your library. Participants are eligible for prize drawings at the end of the program. In addition, each branch offers a unique assortment of prizes!

This year’s theme, “Read Beyond the Beaten Path,” encompasses a world of different summer experiences: hiking, campfires, stories, nature programs, arts and crafts, music, and more! The program is open to all kids ages 0-18 and is divided by age: pre-readers (ages 0-3), kids (ages 3 to 12), and teens.

Our mission of the program is simple: Encourage children and teens to read throughout the summer! Summer reading isn’t just fun; it’s extremely beneficial. Regular reading goes far in combating the “summer slide,” the phenomenon of students losing academic footing during a long academic break. Students who join public library summer reading programs scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year than

tion, I am sure most of us have, and if you are not honest enough so admit it, at least you can say, “I probably pouted as a child.” Our oldest son brought us his dog last night so we can “dog sit” while they are on vacation. This dog has separation disorder. Well, at least that is what my son said. Lucie must be next to people if not in their lap. Our son also brought our 16-month grandson, Eli. What a joy to have him with us, what a hoot. I made pancakes and bacon; Lori had some blueberry pie filling left over so we served that with our meal. Blueberry filling got all over himself and the table and whatever was close to him. After supper, he found his favorite grandpa and grandma toy, our broom. Now someday, he may actually use that broom or one like it. After about 15 minutes, Lori put it back in the laundry room and closed the door. Eli instantly started to pout and then cry, then he leaned forward and put his head on the floor, still pouting. It actually looked pretty funny.

God’s Word is very clear, He cares for us. He says in 2 Thessalonians 3:3-5 “But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.”

Social Media and Mental Health

In 2022 Mental Health and Social Media practically go hand in hand for many people.

Personally, when I think about social media, I imagine the commercial where an older woman is on her phone talking to a friend, sharing her frustration that someone is going to “unfriend” her by removing her from their “wall.”

Now we all know that’s not how it works in the real world, but for many people, of many ages, social media brings along with it many fears and anxieties that surface in different ways.

Young adults and adolescents are the age group with the highest percentage of social media use, and as all these users age the percentiles will likely increase across all age groups over time.

Age % of users: Ages 13-17: 97%; ages 18-29: 86%; ages 30-49: 80%; 50-64: 64%; over 65: 33%.

Jonathan Haidt, American social psychologist, had this to say about Gen Z, people born between 1996 and 2012: “those kids are the first generation in history that got on social media in middle school. A whole generation is more anxious, more fragile, more depressed.

This is a real change in a generation.” That same generation makes up the two age groups that access social media the most.

Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok are among some of the biggest social media platforms available. These platforms have influence over users both good and bad. The intent of the following information is to provide a quick look at trends regarding mental wellbeing of social media users who spend a significant time online.

The Good With access to social media comes an increased ability to stay connected with family and friends across the world. In this same boat is the ability to network and connect with others who have shared interests by utilizing social media platforms. Easy access to the internet through phones also means that most information is at our fingertips and easier to access than ever. Social media can also be used as an outlet to express one’s creativity through many forms of self-expression as well as self-promotion.

The Bad Depression and anxiety rates in the United States among users ages 14-17 increased more than 60% from 2009-2017 and suicide rates were at a 40-year high. During this period the most significant statistical change was an increase in smartphone use and in turn time spent on social media platforms. A study found that 8th graders who spent over 10 hours a week on social media were 56% more likely to report

being unhappy than peers who spent less than 10 hours per week.

Cyberbullying and Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) are two contributors to the negative side effects of social media use. A staggering 90% of teens see cyberbullying as a problem on social media. FOMO will keep users returning to social media over and over due to worry that they may miss a post, message, comment, or breaking news. Constantly checking social media reduces meaningful interactions and increases feelings of exclusion, loneliness, and anxiety.

Excess social media use often leads to self-absorption. On social media people are talking about themselves 80% of the time comparatively in-person communication drops to 30-40%. Currently in America between 5-10% of people meet the criteria for a social media addiction. Social media addiction exacerbates feelings of loneliness and the “likes” system leaves users feeling judged and lesser compared to users who may receive more likes in comparison.

The Solution An alternative to social media use is one my Gen Z children thought was a universal rule “Mandatory Outside Time” (MOT).

Doesn’t matter the season as long as it is safe.

MOT is a time to leave all devices behind and simply go outside.

Banning the use of electronic devices in bedrooms at night is another option. Alarm clocks can be used in place of smartphone alarms for early school mornings. Not using electronics within an hour of bedtime is another guideline that can improve mental health as well as promote healthy sleeping patterns. This is because everything we do on devices is designed to keep us engaged and psychologically stimulated, not ready for sleep.

Limiting time on social media and electronic devices is an obvious tip for promoting happiness and mental well-being. Studies find that keeping leisure media use at a half-hour to a maximum of two hours is the best for mental health. Heavy social media consumers are twice as likely to be unhappy or distressed. It is also important to be mindful and informed about how much media you consume.

Many smartphones track the amount of time you spend on your phone, even differentiating between how much you spend on specific apps. You can even put limits in place for how long you can use social media on most electronic devices.
