The NBA Finals were a feast for basketball junkies like me. The excitement extended far beyond the games themselves. The players put on an exhibition that demonstrated the importance of sharing the glory.

championship. With all those NBA AllStars on the court, there aren’t enough basketballs to go around.

There are, if you are the Warriors.

The team embraced their star newcomer with no jealousy. The team’s sole goal was to win a championship, which they did by sharing the ball.

It doesn’t hurt to have a winner like Steve Kerr leading you. Kerr took his college basketball team, the University of Arizona, to the NCAA Final Four.

He won five NBA championships as a player, three with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls and two with the San Antonio Spurs. Now he’s won two more as a coach.

As President Harry Truman said so well: “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.”

Being unselfish is also important in business. It’s one of the cornerstones of leadership – the willingness to sacrifice for others. It’s putting the interests of the team ahead of your own personal needs and desires. Whether your business is basketball or ball bearings, the organizations that want to stay in business recognize that everyone has a role to play.

Steve Kerr is a master of this. He stood in the background as his players celebrated. He put his team first.

How many of us have worked with people who do a little of the work and want all the credit? But then when there

is a problem, they are the first to blame others.

Being unselfish runs counter to what many people think is important to getting ahead in business. You want to be noticed for your successes, even if others contributed to them. You don’t want your superstar image to be diminished by sharing the glory. But that is not a winning strategy. We much prefer to work with and for team players.

Charles William Eliot, who served as Harvard University President for 40 years, offered this wisdom: “Be unselfish. That is the first and final commandment for those who would be useful and happy in their usefulness. If you think of yourself only, you cannot develop because you are choking the source of development, which is spiritual expansion through thought for others.”

If you want to follow his advice, consider these traits of truly unselfish people: • They share the credit. In giving others recognition, they acknowledge the contributions made by co-workers and set the stage for future cooperation.

They realize that setting a good example encourages others to appreciate the importance of teamwork.

• They truly help others. When there are problems or setbacks, they look for ways to solve them rather than assessing blame. They are willing to share knowledge that will be useful down the Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Fishing History

About the time I was about 11 years old, I spent some evenings fishing, if the farm chores had been completed. Since I wasn’t allowed to drive on the roads, I walked to the lake, which was ½ mile away.

The first preparation was to catch a bunch of frogs. Then I had to dig a good amount of worms, which could usually be found under the manure pile.

Then I had to gather the needed equipment, which included a rod with an open-faced reel, a milk pail, some hooks and lures and a cane pole. The rod and the cane pole in the left hand and the rest of the bait and equipment in the milk pale in my right hand.

Time to get going!

The travel path was over my uncle’s field, through a barb-wire fence into a cow pasture. Then through a brush-covered area and into the woods. The cane pole and the attached fishing line was constantly getting snagged in the limbs and brush. After getting through the woods, I had to get myself and the equipment through another barb-wire fence. I usually incurred some scratches somewhere on my body from that darn fence.

Now after a 200 yard walk, I could finally go fishing. If I could see any Bass jumping or swimming in the water, I’d pick up the rod and reel, which was continually having a back-lash of the line, hook on a frog and catch a few Bass, which were returned to the lake, because I had been told they had soft flesh and tasted like mud.

After playing with the Bass for a while, I needed to switch to worms and catch some Sunfish, because I needed to take some fish home to show off to the

road.

• They have others’ best interests in mind. They see the benefits of making everyone on their team successful, and then do their best to help their coworkers improve. They understand that everyone is trying to get ahead and support their efforts.

• They are trusted. They keep their word. They do what they say they will do. People working with them know they can depend that they won’t get thrown under the bus when a project goes awry. They know they will be treated respectfully even when they disagree.

• They are resilient. They can accept setbacks gracefully, and understand that sometimes the biggest failures can lead to the biggest successes. They don’t point fingers, instead pointing their colleagues back on track.

• They welcome ideas and input from others. They realize that there is often more than one way to solve a problem, and that they do not always have all the answers. They aren’t threatened by other viewpoints.

They keep their focus on achieving the goal, not being right all the time.

Give these ideas some serious thought – and you will be a champion in your own right.

family. The Sunfish were all about 3 inches long and I could catch as many as I wanted. I soon had to head back home, since there were quite a few fish in the pail, the bugs were becoming bothersome and the sun was beginning to set. I had to retrace my trail back home, but now I had to contend with less daylight, more tangles, more weight in the pail and the urge to hurry up so that I’d get home before dark.

I made it. Now comes the not-so-much-fun part.

Those Sunfish needed to be cleaned. It was dark, so an electric bulb was needed to give some light to the plank where the fish were cleaned. Of course the light brought in every bug from the farmyard. They got into your eyes, your mouth and nose and made a picnic of any exposed skin. Those that stung the middle of your back created the most frustration. The farm cats were instantly aware that there were fish being cleaned, so they all gathered under the fish cleaning area, mewing and waiting to grab and fight over the preferred fish-

gut items. Filleting fish was considered too wasteful, so they were scaled and cleaned with the skin on.

After what seemed like an hour, the outside work was done, the cleaning area was washed, the light was put away and the fish were taken to the house. They then needed to have the skin scraped and any left-over insides removed. Now they are ready for tomorrow’s dinner.

The next day, Mother would put the fish in seasoned flour and fry them in butter. Since the fish were small, they were fried hard, which made the ribs easily crunch and were especially tasty. Mustard gravy was then made with the left-over bits in the frying pan and the gravy over the potatoes made a really great meal.

Obituaries Todd D. Olson

Todd D. Olson, age 53, of Sauk Centre, passed away p e a c e f u l l y, surrounded by family on We d n e s d a y, June 21, 2017 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota after a year and a half

battle with cancer.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 24 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre.

Todd David Olson was born February 7, 1964 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Virden and Mary Mae (Minette) Olson.

Todd attended Sauk Centre High School.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard March 29, 1982 and was honorably discharged July 14, 2003, spending over 21 years as a Staff Sergeant. Todd married Sandy West on June 2, 1989 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. He did carpentry work in the 1990’s and renovated three of the houses that he and his family lived in. He also worked as a car salesman for a few years at John Wiese and then went back to work as a machinist at Melrose Metalworks.

Todd enjoyed riding horses, spending time on the farm, biking, fishing, and pheasant hunting. He loved to go on vacations and spend time with his family.

He also was a movie buff. He always

Todd was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post 67.

Survivors include his wife; Sandy Olson of Sauk Centre; children, Becky (Hans) Larson of Perham, Autumn Olson of Sauk Centre, and Blaine Olson of Sauk Centre; grandson, Kellen Larson; mother, Mary Mae Olson of Sauk Centre; brothers and sisters; Bonnie (John) Nagel of Little Falls, Linda (Wayne) Thom of Swanville, Perry Olson of Long Prairie, Sandy (Larry) Thom of Melrose, Lonney (Charley) Olson of Sauk Centre, Jody Olson of Sauk Centre, Kim (Sherry) Olson of Sauk Centre, Lance (Beth Carstens) Olson of Sauk Centre, Shelly (Keith Nygaard) Rust of Belgrade, Patrice Koshiol of Paynesville, Marty (Heather) Olson of Little Sauk, and Shannon Olson of Sauk Centre; brothers and sisters-inlaw; mother and father-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, June 26, 2017 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating.

Burial was at St. John the Baptist Parish Cemetery in Swanville, MN. James was born on January 7, 1963 in Melrose, MN to the late Anthony and Louise (Hiltner) Loxterkamp. He grew up in Swanville, MN where he attended school and graduated with the class of 1981. James was employed at Larson Boats in Little Falls, MN for many years.

He was a very kind and gentle person. Jim always put his children and family first, and would give them the shirt off his back.

He also had a great love for animals. He always had dogs, horses, and swans on his farm, but often tried to find a very exotic or unusual animal to bring to the farm to care for. Christmas was his favorite time

Jerome was born in St. Martin, MN to Bernard and Louise (Arceneau) Weber.

He was the oldest of 12 children and was a plumber, mechanic, and co-owner of

He was a board member of St. Martin National Bank and a member of Catholic United Financial, Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph Society.

Survivors include his siblings, Benedictine Sisters, Jane, Bernadette, Helen, and Marcella; sisters, Alice (Richard) Drontle, Elizabeth (Don) Schramel; 2 nieces; 8 nephews; 8 grandnieces; 6 grand-nephews, and 1 great-grand-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Fr. Arnold, OSB, Raymond, Lawrence, Fr. Otto, OSB, and a baby sister.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My dad wants me to buy a house on a 30year loan for him and my mom in my name, and let them make the payments.

I’m 24 years old and have a good credit score and a nice apartment, but my job depends largely on how the oil industry is doing.

My dad filed bankruptcy nine years ago, and he’s already $150,000 in debt again, so he’s never been very responsible with money. I think this would spell big trouble for me, but I’m sure he will be mad if I say no. What are your thoughts?

-Emmanuel Dear Emmanuel, Yeah, I think doing something like this would spell big trouble for you. If your dad is irresponsible with money — especially to the point of having to file bankruptcy — what makes you think he’ll make these house payments on time?

I know this would be an uncomfortable conversation to have with your dad, but you need to brace yourself and just do it. Be respectful and explain exactly why you won’t do this.

Think about it, Emmanuel. When he doesn’t pay the bill on time, it’s going to screw up your credit score. And when you get ready to buy a house, guess what? You’re going to have trouble qualifying because you already own a house. Most people don’t make enough money to qualify to buy two homes.

Basically, your dad is asking you to not buy a house so they can have one.

I can’t tell you how to make your dad okay with saying no to this, but I can tell you that your answer should be no. Let him and your mom know that you love them both, but this is something you just can’t do.

We’ve got $8,000 in our emergency fund, and I make between $25,000 and $30,000 a year. Should we try setting up a payment plan with the hospital, or is dipping into our savings a better idea?

-Matt Dear Matt, I’d write a check today and knock out that hospital bill. This falls under the heading of “emergency” in my mind, so pay the bill and jump back into rebuilding your emergency fund.

You’ve done a really good job of saving on your income, but let’s see what we can do about making better money in the future. Extra practical training in your field, or more education in the classroom, could increase your income quickly. Your emergency fund needs to be a little bigger as well, and it’ll be a lot easier to make this happen if you’re making more money.

I’m sure you’re a hard-working guy, but it’s going to be tough for even a small family to make it on what you’re bringing home now. The unexpected can become a common occurrence when there’s a little one in the picture.

500-mile Bike Ride in Holdingford area For a quarter of a century, the Habitat 500 Bike Ride has sent cyclists across Minnesota, biking 500 miles to raise funds and awareness to help Habitat for Humanity build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the ride, which runs from July 9th through July 15th. Cyclists will begin in Victoria with overnight stops in Hutchinson, Sauk Rapids, Forest Lake, and Cannon Falls before returning to Victoria.

Since Habitat Minnesota took over coordination of the ride in 2002, the Habitat 500 Bike Ride has raised $4.6 million to support Habitat for Humanity home construction. The ride has contributed to Minnesota’s local Habitat for Humanity offices building 2,500 homes with families across the state. Every rider, every donation, and every home are actions taken towards a world where everyone has a decent and affordable place to live. Habitat homes help families build financial stability, invest in education, and reach new education and employment opportunities. Such success would not have been possible without the dedication and support of the riders, volunteers, and local towns, many of who have been participating in the ride for years.

On Wednesday, July 12th, the fourth day of the ride will take riders through Holdingford. Riders will stop at Lake Wobegon Trailhead in Holdingford between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM to eat and rest. When they arrive, riders will have already biked 36 miles that day!

The crowd at the rest stop will be a little smaller than the other days because some riders will be working on a Habitat for Humanity home build with volunteers and a family from Sauk Rapids.

Each year during the Ride, volunteers and riders have the opportunity to assist with a local Habitat home build, called the bike.home. Deeq Mohamud, Nasra Omar, and their six children are this year’s bike.home. family, for a home in Sauk Rapids. Deeq is looking forward to building his house alongside work friends who are excited to help.

They are currently renting a house where two bedrooms are unusable in the winter months because of inadequate heating, forcing the family of eight to sleep in two bedrooms and the living room. The family was excited when they found out they were going to be Habitat homeowners and said their lives will change for the better. “It will be a very happy life,” Deeq said.

That is why I do [the ride], because of her and all the other children like her!”

Happiness is not found in what we have but Who has us. Christianity is not about our possessions but what we possess in Christ and the fact that He possesses us. A true believer, an honest disciple or a sincere “follower of the way” is one who recognizes that the Lord is all-powerful and gives us the strength we need to live the Christian life.

And living the Christian life will bring true blessings and genuine happiness to the one who walks with God. Those who live the Christian life as described in His Word will find fulfillment and completeness in Him. One translator studied this verse for years and finally decided that it would best be translated, “How enriched are those who draw their strength from You, whose hearts are focused on You.” Those attempting to draw strength from the “things” that are of this world will be left weak, weary and worn-out.

And anyone whose heart is focused on what is seen will discover that their vision will not survive reality.

Questions and concerns regarding ditch mowing regulations

I’ve received several questions this past week concerning ditch mowing on roads here in Minnesota. The concern stems from the announcement last November from MnDOT that they would start implementing new restrictions for the mowing of ditches in state right-of-ways. Among them was a requirement to apply for a permit to mow, in addition to enforcement of regulations on when the mowing could begin.

We have long had an August first starting date for ditch mowing but it has seldom, if ever, been enforced.

Concerns were raised about the new regulations, which many landowners thought were too burdensome. As a result, legislation was passed calling for a moratorium, which essentially pushed back by a year any new requirements.

During that time, negotiations are supposed to take place and new, less onerous rules are to be proposed.

So, the bottom line is that, at least for this year, nothing has changed in regard to ditch mowing along state highways. In many places, highway workers have already made the safety cut along the top of the shoulder. This is an important safety feature, especially at intersections, so a clear line-of-sight can be maintained.

A stop-gap agreement was reached late last week by those involved in the dispute between the Legislature and Gov. Mark Dayton. It doesn’t end the lawsuit but does extend funding for the Legislature and its staff members for three months. Without it, plans were

being worked on to lay off or furlough staffers for both the House and Senate in the new fiscal year. In addition, members of both legislative bodies would not have been paid or reimbursed for any in-district travel, beginning July 1.

The case is being heard in Ramsey County District Court this week. It’s also expected that the Minnesota Supreme Court will review the case.

It’s unusual to see parade watchers bundled in jackets and blankets, and wearing stocking caps and gloves, to watch a parade in late June. But that’s what happened over the weekend at parades in Melrose and Villard. Temps in the 50s and low 60s, combined with strong winds, made things a bit chilly.

It also didn’t help that seemingly every cloud that passed overhead dropped rain on those below.

Starbuck hosts Heritage Days this weekend, with their parade set for Saturday evening. Hopefully, our weather becomes more summer-like again after several consecutive days of chilly, windy conditions. Crops in the field aren’t growing much, and spraying for weeds has been difficult as well. Sleeping conditions have been great, and air conditioners haven’t been put to much use so far this summer, but we do need some heat to get things growing again.

The Unexplainables -By Sheila Ripplinger Have you ever experienced an unexplainable moment where you are left a bit perplexed and stunned? One of those particular moments for me happened approximately thirty years ago, yet still remains as clear in my memory as if it happened just yesterday!

I was traveling back to my home very late at night after a weekend stay with my grandparents who lived about two hours away. My one and three year old little ones were sleeping in their car seats in the back seat of my car. We were getting close to our home and as I was approaching the last big curve on the rural country two lane road, there were headlights coming straight at me in MY lane! I was going to be hit head on to be sure! I remember that feeling of helplessness flash literally before my eyes that evening. A split second moment later, my car was completely stopped! It was like a TV show that stops right at the second of the next scene that leaves you anxious until it picks up again in the next show! I sat there astonished at what had just taken place completely dumbfounded! My children were still sound asleep, and I saw tail lights going in the opposite direction. Absolutely no human explanation whatsoever for what had just taken place! My life was forever changed in that moment of second chance. I knew that God had spared our lives and was extremely overwhelmed with gratitude like I had never known before.

Those little ones in the back of my car are now thriving adults with their own children. I still stand amazed and look forward to the Lord’s explanation some day.

This moment has also helped me through other unexplainables in life as well. Unfair life trials and suffering that come our way that leave us heartbroken and asking why? We want to have answers. James 1:2&3 explain that sufferings and trials build faith and perseverance. But even believing that does not discredit our true heartache within the trials. I totally believe that the Lord expects us to go to Him and ask the whys because it draws us closer to Him even if we do not get clear answers.

ery level of suffering that we may go through. Hebrews 2 is one of the places that tells us this fact. We can never say that He doesn’t understand our pain. He experienced death of loved ones, temptations, mocking, people spreading lies about him and attempting to sabotage Him. He knows what betrayal is, loneliness, and all the rest!

We may not get explanations for what we go through in this life, or make sense out of our heartaches, but we can know and trust that God is with us in the midst of it all.

One statement that some ‘well meaning’ people make during times of trials is that ‘everything happens for a reason.’ Two things that are majorly wrong about that statement. 1- it is not helpful. It is actually salt on a wound. 2It is not biblical! Does child abuse have a reason? Does a baby’s death have a reason? What about cancer? I heard it when our teenage son was laying in the hospital bed on life support. Not helpful at all.

I do believe that our Amazing God in His great mercy, love, and grace will reveal to us some day the unexplained moments. Perhaps that is some of what we will talk about when we get to the Heaven that is being prepared for those who are His. But for now, our responsibility is to trust Him for the path in front of us and ask for His wisdom along the way.

It is not easy- and I cannot find a scripture verse that says this life is supposed to be easy. I do know however, that what we do with this life makes all the difference for where we will spend our eternity. Thanks be to God for His unexplainable love and mercy to us!

A resident of Dunlin Road requested more dust control spray between residents on that road to help with road grading and keeping the road in better shape. After discussion Sup. Johnson made a motion to do full coverage between paying customers on Dunlin Road. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion.

A land owner on Dowell Drive asked a supervisor about putting in an approach. After viewing supervisor noted that no culvert is needed due to the shape of the road and land.

The supervisor that was going to install handicap signs on 315th Ave was not sure both sides of the road were checked by Gopher State One Call. Clerk will check into it.

The Clean-Up Day went well with about three dumpsters being filled. The bill was discussed as how to split between city and township.

In the road report contractor is working on doing dust control spraying. Flower trail resident requested gravel, but supervisor will have to trim trees before gravel can be applied at end of road.

June 18, 2017: At 14:16 Jessica Kerzman of Grey Eagle reported that a green and white Kawasaki KX110 dirt bike had been taken from her garage. The dirt bike has a crack in the front right plastic around the radiator along with Kerzman 3x Stickers on the number plates. The tires also have holes in each lug where ice studs had been removed. Anyone with information of this dirt bike is encouraged to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office at 320-732-2157.

June 25, 2017: At 10:06 Todd County Sheriffs Office responded to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of County 11 and County 38. Mary Jasken, 74 of Alexandria, was traveling East on County 38 when she failed to stop at the intersection. The Impala collided with a Ford pickup driven by Jude Sonju, 37 of St. Joseph who was traveling North on County 11. There were two passengers in the truck, Misty Sonju, 33 of St. Joseph, and Pearl Gilpin, 35 of Long Prairie.

The 3 females were transported to the Long Prairie Hospital with injuries. Long Prairie Fire Department, Long Prairie Ambulance and Browerville Ambulance assisted with the accident.

June 25, 2017: At 10:45 Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a burglary with property damage on Hackberry Rd. in Todd County. Travis Ritter reported it was a hunting property with a pole shed and camper. The pole shed had forced entry and the camper was tried but access was not gained. Missing was a deep cycle 12 volt battery, 4 fishing rods and reels. Brand name of the battery was Sterling. The incident happened sometime between 6/18/17 and 6/25/17. If anyone has any information on this incident they are asked to call the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

June 25, 2017: At 11:16 Todd County Sheriff’s Office investigated the theft of batteries from a camper on Hummingbird Road. Anyone with information regarding this theft or notices suspicious activity in the area please contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.
