Advance your career in every meeting -By Harvey Mackay I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve called someone and the response I received is that they are in a meeting. I often wonder if they are in a meeting to see if they should have a meeting.

According to the MeetingKing website, in the United States alone we “enjoy” 11 million formal business meetings each day and we waste $37 billion in unnecessary meetings every year. The site also offered up these statistics: • 37 percent of employee time is spent in meetings, • managers attend more than 60 meetings per month, • 39 percent of meeting participants admitted to dozing off during a meeting, • over 70 percent brought other work to meetings, • an estimated 25-50 percent of meeting time is wasted.

The researchers found that the more meetings employees attended, the more exhausted they felt and the higher they perceived their workload to be.

Meetings are a fact of life for every employee. Instead of just enduring them, learn to use meetings to your advantage.

Meetings can actually be very productive if you manage them effectively. I suspect the main reason that people dread

meetings is that they are not well-planned with specific goals anticipated.

With that in mind, whoever calls the meeting must first decide what needs to be accomplished. The Monday morning sales meeting? The Friday weekly wrap-up?

Even if those are typically on the schedule, it’s still necessary to define the purpose of the meeting in one or two sentences. That way people know why they’re present, what needs to be done and how to know if the meeting is successful.

Here is what I do: Set an agenda. List the issues to discuss, review or decide. Your agenda should include firm starting and ending times, as well as estimates of time for each item under discussion. Time limits encourage people to be better prepared to discuss the subject at hand. They also demonstrate a respect for attendees’ other commitments.

Start on time. Don’t wait for latecomers. If someone is late, don’t go back and review what has been covered.

Show that you value the time of the people who showed up promptly. In the same vein, end the meeting as soon as you have achieved what you set out to do.

Appoint a “referee.” The referee’s job is to keep the discussion on track and interrupt whenever the talk strays. New topics that arise should either be tabled until later or scheduled for their own meetings.

Keep and send minutes. Someone other than the meeting organizer should take notes on the meeting. These minutes should record who attended, what was discussed, any agreements that were

reached and all time and action items that were assigned – and who is responsible for them. That insures that those who attended all have the same information.

Minutes can be as simple as bullet points, assignments and timelines. Distribute minutes within 24 hours.

Those are the meeting planner’s duties. Those who attend have some responsibilities too. Instead of whining about yet another meeting biting into your day, approach it with an attitude that this is an opportunity to shine.

Be prepared. Study the agenda or talk to the meeting leader to find out what will be covered. Spend time getting up to speed so you can anticipate where the discussion will lead, and get some ideas of your own ready to present.

Keep things simple. Don’t try to impress people with your vocabulary, or bore people to tears with long-winded sentences. Make your points quickly and succinctly, backing them up with evidence as necessary. Everyone will appreciate your efforts to keep the meeting moving forward.

Ask questions. Look for opportunities to ask pertinent questions that demonstrate your expertise: “Have you considered this approach?” Don’t overdo it, though. You don’t want to be seen as a pest who has to talk to be noticed.

Collaborate. Don’t obsess about your own ideas. Listen to what other people have to say and build on their thoughts.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Poisons

Scientific research has created many improvements in our lives. Medical advancements are helping many of us to live beyond the time our health issues would normally allow. In some cases these improvements have actually created a situation that has shortened our lives. Even though some improvements have been greatly advertised, promoted by manufacturers and recommended by our government, they were not good for our health.

In the 1920’s, one of the great advancements was the uses of lead. Lead had been used in paint to create a strong, lasting color selection. As years passed it was found that exposure to lead paint created nerve damage, kidney problems and in some cases, growth restriction. As a result, today efforts are being used to remove lead paint from the older houses as a safety issue. Lead was also added to gasoline to make it a more powerful product. It increased gas mileage and engine compression. By 1924, the industry was already aware of the dangers with lead. Employees in a lead factory were killed from exposure to lead. Subsequently, special uniforms were required to avoid direct exposure to the product. Leaded gasoline was used to power automobiles for the next 40 years. During that time research showed that the lead content of the human bodies was increasing at an alarming rate, along with retardation and hypertension.

Inhaling air which contained lead containing exhaust was bringing lead into our bodies. In the 1960’s non-leaded gas was introduced. It really didn’t perform as well at first, but the reason was not that the gas was bad, but the automobiles needed to be changed to effectively use the product. The lead reduction reduced the lead in human blood by 75% from 1976 to 1991 – a healthy improvement.

Asbestos is now being professionally removed from some homes, ships and commercial buildings. The advertised use of the product was for safety, since it would reduce the ability for a fire to spread, due to it’s resistance to heat. The danger from the product was that it contained microscopic fibers that would travel through the air and become lodged in lungs causing lung cancer. This wonderful discovery really became another health hazard.

I’m sure that some of you remember DDT. This product appeared in 1945. We no longer had to pick potato bugs. The powder spread on a cows back would kill the flies as they landed. Originally Black Flag advertisements suggested it be used in the kitchen and children’s room to eliminate “those pesky flies.” It was discontinued by the EPA in 1972.

It was causing cancer in people and was a threat to wildlife.

The solution actually created more harm than good.

The Vietnam War brought out a really scary product called Agent Orange. It was a mixture of 24-D and 245-T. The Air Force spread it on densely forested areas in Vietnam and Cambodia. The product resulted in total deforestation of vast sections of these countries. It was afterword discovered that the product was causing severe health problems for the local populations. 4 million people were exposed to Agent Orange through direct contact, bathing and drinking water consumption. The 20 million gallons of Agent Orange spread over forested areas caused death, various kinds of deformities and multiple kinds of cancer. Children were born with horribly misshapen bodies and these births are still occurring today, 50 years later. There are still large land areas, which were sprayed with Agent Orange, that today are void of any plant life. Our servicemen who were exposed to Agent Orange through handling the product, air-borne fog and bathing in water exposed to the poison by runoff of rain, etc. These veterans are now experiencing many health problems which are now appearing 50 years after the initial

or steal the credit. If the meeting time doesn’t allow for serious brainstorming, ask if another session might be scheduled.

Volunteer. Be willing to implement the ideas and solutions that come out of the meeting, even if they’re not your own. You’ll get a reputation as someone people can depend on to get things done.

Obituaries Jerome J. “Romie” Gessell Jerome J. “Romie” Gessell, age 77 of Burtrum, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, June 30 at Brighter Days Family Church in Burtrum to accommodate his many relatives and friends. Rev. David Sobotka will officiate with Rev. Terry Wardlaw assisting. Family interment will be in Bearhead Cemetery near Swanville.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Burtrum.

Jerome John Gessell was born January 31, 1941 in Little Falls, Minnesota to James, Sr. and Genevieve (Stylski) Gessell. Romie was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Richardson on December 14, 1962 in Burtrum, Minnesota. He enjoyed weightlifting, fishing, deer hunting, snowmobile racing, visiting friends, looking at cars, and going to auto auctions. Romie

Irene F. Sunderman

Irene F. Sunderman, age 77 of Sauk Centre, died unexpectedly from complications of a stroke on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 2 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Fr. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m.

Monday at the church.

Irene Frances Lieser was born July 30, 1940 in Melrose, Minnesota, to Leo and

owned and operated Gessell Auto Sales and Service for many years. He also worked for Todd County Water Patrol, worked as the Chief of Police in Burtrum, and drove school bus for 42 years. Romie was a jack of all trades. He was dedicated to his faith and read his Bible every morning. Romie’s favorite past time was spending time with his family, especially his grandkids and great-grandson.

Romie was a member of Faith Community Church in Burtrum and a Charter Member of the Grey Eagle/Burtrum Lions.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann Gessell of Burtrum; Romie Jr. (Beth) Gessell of Grey Eagle; grandkids, Emily (Eric) Jenkins of Long Prairie, Evan Gessell of Grey Eagle, and Erik Gessell of Grey Eagle; great-grandson, Griffin Jenkins; and sisters and brother, Marlene (Gene) Larson, Mary Felix, Barb (Terry Eliason) Pinckney, and Pat (Jan) Gessell.

Romie was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronnie Gessell; brothers, James Gessell, Jr., Gerald Gessell, and Duane Gessell; and mother-in-law, Hazel Richardson.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Eleanor (Wuertz) Lieser. She graduated from Melrose High School in 1958. On August 17, 1963 she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Sunderman at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Irene worked for the Sauk Centre Public School for over two decades. She was a member of the Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church. Irene enjoyed playing cards and dominos with her friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Kim (Scott) Ruppert of Eden Prairie; grandchildren, Jake and Nicole Ruppert; sisters, Lillian (Walter) Welle of Detroit Lakes, and Mary Ann (Eldred) Athmann of St. Cloud.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Sunderman on March 7, 2013; parents; sister, Elaine Hoff; brother, Matt Lieser; and infant brothers, Irvin and Neil Lieser.

M a r v i n Shequen, age 89 of Glenwood, died Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at the Glenwood Retirement Village.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 28th at 2:00 p.m. at the HoplinH i t c h c o c k Funeral Home in Glenwood. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Motley Public Cemetery in Motley, Minnesota.

Marvin Franklin Shequen, the son of Marvin and Beulah (Deline) Shequen was born December 18, 1928 in Leader, Minnesota. He grew up on a farm near Leader where he attended school, then Motley High School. He graduated from Motley High School in 1946. Marvin was in the dairy industry for over 50 years.

He worked in and managed creameries including being a manager at Melrose Coop Creamery.

On August 13, 1949, Marvin was united in marriage to RoseMarie Nelson in Maple Hill Lutheran Church. The couple made their

first home in Springfield, Minnesota. They spent several years in southern Minnesota and in Leader and Melrose before finally settling in Glenwood. Marv and RoseMarie were blessed with two children and shared 68 years of marriage.

Marv was a member of the Minnesota Dairymen’s Association, a 50 year member of the Lions Club International, Freeport Gun Club, Melrose Chamber of Commerce and on various church councils in the communities he lived. He enjoyed stamp collecting, hunting, reloading ammunition, fishing, and genealogy research. Marv will be remembered for his kindness, patience, and humility. Marvin was a man who loved his family and had a great smile and sense of humor.

Marvin is survived by his wife, RoseMarie Shequen of Glenwood; daughter, Donna (John) Collins of Pine River; sister, Margaret (Chuck) Knapper of Faribault, MN; brothers, Donald (Joanne) Shequen of Litchfield and Richard (Jan) Shequen of Lake City, MN; nieces, nephews and special family members who were like grandchildren: Krystal (Jon) Ferris, Duncan and Maya, Becca Shequen and Noah and Dylan Shequen.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Tom Shequen; and brother, Wilmar Shequen.

Leilani B. “Lonny” Rolfes, age 80 of Freeport, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, June 25, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m.

Friday, June 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Robert Rolfes officiating and Rev. Daniel Walz concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the Christian Mothers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the church.

Leilani Bernice Butkowski was born August 18, 1937 in St. Rosa, Minnesota to Joseph and Edith (Coe) Butkowski. She completed through the eighth grade at a country school near St. Rosa. On May 7, 1960 she was united in marriage to Allen Rolfes at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Lonny was mainly a homemaker until her husband’s death in 1985. She then began working at Jennie-O Foods for over 20 years until her retirement. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and the Christian Mothers. Lonny enjoyed gardening, sewing, painting, and feeding the birds.

Survivors include her children, Pete (Sue) Rolfes of Coon Rapids, Paul Rolfes of Freeport, Sue (Matt) Worms of Freeport, Phil (Kay) Rolfes of Albany, Sheila (Fred) Judd of Alexandria, and Patrick (Lisa) Rolfes of Melrose; 11 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and eight greatgrandchildren; brothers, David (Carol) Butkowski of St. Rosa and Danny (Nancy) Butkowski of Little Rock, Arkansas; and sister, Leah (Duane) Vornbrock of Elrosa.

Lonny was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Rolfes; parents; and sisters, Elaine Blommel and Ida Kutzer.

Serving as casket bearers will be Nathanial Rolfes, Cameron Rolfes, Blake Rolfes, Allen Wimmer, Melissa Rolfes, Joseph Rolfes, Alexandra Judd, and Victor Rolfes. Cross bearer will be April Wolbeck and scripture bearer will be Amanda Butkowski.

Steven J. Krystosek

Mass of Christian burial for Steven J. Krystosek, age 53 of Holdingford was held Wednesday, June 27 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. Fr. Glenn Krystosek and Fr. Eugene Doyle officiated, burial was in the parish cemetery. Steven died at his home on Friday of natural causes.

Steven was born November 23, 1964 in St. Cloud to Eugene and Evelyn (Schlichting) Krystosek. He has lived his entire life on the family farm near Holdingford/Opole.

He worked for Service Master and he was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and was active in the Koinonia retreat program for a number of years. He was a graduate of Holdingford High School and attended Junior College at Crosier Seminary

Ralph C. Lauer

in Onamia, MN. Steven enjoyed a simple life, but had a wide array of interests, many centered around his Polish heritage and the family farm, both of which he was very proud. He carried on the family tradition of baking coffee cake, bread and making sauerkraut, was an expert on his extended family history, loved antiques, threshing shows, old time music and made many trips to Medora, ND to enjoy the Old West. Steven took great pride in his beautiful flower gardens at his home. He had a good sense of humor, but most of all will be remembered by his family for his strong religious faith.

Steven is survived by his brothers and sisters; Rose (Forest) Reichel, Royalton; Jane (Dale) Pulis, Sauk Rapids; Fr. Glenn Krystosek, Paynesville; Allen (Linda) Krystosek, Maple Grove; Dale Krystosek, Mendota Heights; Patricia Krystosek, Holdingford and Terri (Dan) Weyer, Bowlus.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Evelyn Krystosek and infant siblings, Walter and Evelyn Krystosek.

Mass of Christian Burial for Ralph C. Lauer, age 98 of Albany was held Monday, June 25, 2018 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

R a l p h Christian Lauer was born October 3, 1919 to Christian and Barbara (Wilms) Lauer in Farming, MN. Ralph attended school in Farming. He also attended Agricultural College at the University of Minnesota for two years. He served in the US Army during WWII from September 1942 to September 1945. Ralph served with the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division and was decorated with a Bronze Star Medal, and a Purple Heart. Ralph was united in marriage to Marie Thome on June 28, 1947 in Avon. The couple made their home in Farming where they farmed until they sold the farm to their son in 1988 and retired to Albany. Ralph enjoyed singing with the church choir,

gardening, hunting, fishing, socializing and playing cards. He also enjoyed traveling, especially an Alaskan cruise. Ralph was a member of Albany American Legion and Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

Ralph is survived by his children, Linda (Allen) Reitmeier of Duncanville, TX, Jane (Mark) Jepperson of Fargo, ND, and James (Rose Ann) Lauer of Farming, MN, 14 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

He is also survived by brothers, Victor of Albany, and Florian of St. Paul, sister, Rosie of Minneapolis, and sister in law, Mary Ann of St. Martin.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marie (2010), parents, infant daughter, Janice, and brothers, Clarence, Arthur, Walter, Romuald, and Alois.

Dear Dave, I’m retired, and in the past few years I’ve taken up painting.

This hobby has begun bringing in more money than I expected. I was wondering at what point I should start thinking about separating my art money from my personal finances, and look at officially starting a little business.

-Pat Dear Pat, I’d do it now. A hobby that makes money is called a business.

Hearing this is scary to some people, but starting a small business doesn’t have to be complicated. You can go to your bank, and using your Social Security number, open a sole proprietor checking account.

Title the account with your full name, then DBA — doing business as — and the name of your business.

All your art income goes into that account, and any expenses paid where your painting is concerned comes out of that account. After the income goes in, and the expenses come out, what’s left is profit.

That’s what you’ll end up paying taxes on.

Also, you’ll be required to do quarterly estimates and send them to the IRS if you make more than $640 in a quarter. Always remember to always hold back 25 percent for taxes, too, in a separate savings account just for this purpose.

talking about credit cards and things like that when this is mentioned. I finally made my last student loan payment the other day. Do you think it would be a good idea to request a formal statement saying my student loan debt has been completely paid off?

-Andrea Dear Andrea, Following up on paid-off debts is always a good idea. It wouldn’t hurt to write, and request formal, written confirmation that everything is paid in full.

You can do this through email, so you’ll have a record of contact, or you can send a certified letter — return receipt requested — through the postal system. That way, you’ll have a record they received the letter and signed for it.

It sounds like you spent a lot of time paying off your student loans. After an experience like that, you don’t want to have to deal with greedy or dishonest collectors hounding you years down the road, and no way to prove you’re free and clear.

Restrictions on soy bean pesticide Dicamba cause ripples in ag community

The past two weeks have seen a flurry of communication between legislators, farmers and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. The topic of most of it was the deadline for spraying a pesticide known as “Dicamba” on soybeans. Dicamba is a chemical that’s been around for a long time, but in the last couple of years, soybeans have been bred to resist its weed-killing ability and certain varieties are now resistant to it. It has become popular to plant this type of soybeans in areas where weed resistance to other chemicals such as Round-Up has become quite prevalent.

The issue comes because this Dicamba can, under certain conditions, drift or volatilize and move onto areas where it shouldn’t be and cause damage to crops that are not resistant to it. Several hundred complaints were lodged with the Dept. of Ag last year in Minnesota, as well as numerous similar complaints in other states. Because of that, access to the pesticide became more restricted this year, and growers who wanted to continue using it had to attend classes on its use and become certified.

In addition, the Department went beyond what most other states were doing and added a cut-off date, a date after which the spraying of Dicamba would not be allowed in Minnesota. Commissioner Dave Frederickson announced last year, that after consulting with university researchers and others, the cut-off date here would be June 20. In addition, there were other stipulations to spraying, such as high temperature and wind limits.

The date raised concerns at the time from those involved in soybean production.

My local co-op told me that, traditionally, the third week of June was their busiest week for spraying. And this cut-off date fell right in that time frame. In addition, if weather conditions during that time were not ideal, spraying could not be done, either.

So, here comes this season, the first with the June 20 deadline, and we have a “perfect storm” of sorts in regard to soybean production. Heavy snows in April pushed planting dates back from normal, and then heavy rains, especially in southern Minnesota, pushed them back even further in some localized areas. Then, to top things off, hot temperatures and high winds made spraying impossible during the days leading up to the cut-off date.

Anticipating the difficulty with getting soybeans sprayed by the deadline, a letter asking for an extension signed by 14 legislators was sent to the Dept. of Ag the week before. That request was denied, as was a similar request by the Soybean Growers sent on June 18.

port for an extension. There is concern about drift damage, and if the number of complaints this year was similar to last year, the chemical could be taken totally off the market. It was my opinion that because of the weather conditions that didn’t allow spraying in the days leading up to the deadline and the variability of crop development across the state, an extension of some duration was warranted.

However, that extension was not granted, and we must move on. Other pesticides will have to be substituted, and farmers will need to watch for “escape weeds” and use other means to try and control them. It was estimated by one area agronomist that as few as 5 to 10 percent of the Dicamba-resistant soybeans planted around here this year will actually have Dicamba sprayed on them.

It’s expected the Public Utilities Commission will rule this week on whether or not to allow the construction of a replacement crude oil pipeline in northern Minnesota. Also in the news is a report of a train derailment of oil cars in Iowa and thousands of gallons of crude being spilled into a river. Pipelines are the safest way to transport this product, and it’s estimated that 10,000 rail cars or 24,000 tanker trucks would be needed per day to replace what this proposed pipeline could move. It will be very interesting to see what the PUC decides.

Mark 4:1-34 contains parables and more parables. We teach all the time using metaphors and other word pictures because they are a good way to illustrate a new concept.

So far in the book of Mark Jesus immediately begins his ministry, he calls and appoints disciples and ends up moving so fast even his own mother and brothers think he has gone off the deep end. Now he is talking in riddles.

At this point we are told Jesus only spoke in parables and then explained these teachings in private to his disciples. (See verse 34) Drawing from previous chapters and the problems Jesus’ popularity was causing I can see why Jesus might want to leave these profound teachings unexplained until after his death and resurrection when his disciples would then go out and explain everything and begin yielding a harvest of thirty, and sixty and hundredfold.

To help illustrate the power of the word of God you could take 12 seeds of wheat, plant them and imagine they increase 60 fold so they each produce 60 more seeds. How many seeds will you have at the end of only your third season? 12 times 60 is 720. 720 times 60 is 43,200, and that times 60 makes 2,592,000 seeds at the end of your third season -- and this is the mid-level increase. At 100-fold you hit 12,000,000 seeds at the end of the third season. Sharing the gospel of Jesus has this same multiplying effect.

around seeds and growth to emphasize God’s desire for all people to know about Jesus. Thus the people of God, the church, grows too. Parables have power. Mark knows this when he chooses the few he includes in his Gospel but Jesus is the one who gives these words power and the way he uses them keeps us focused on the very purpose of this book, to present the beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who said he is calling all people to repent and believe in the gospel. This good news, this seed is the death and resurrection of Jesus and when we hear it it is planted in us to grow and produce fruit.

When we over emphasize one teaching or overdo one book in the Bible we can lose focus on what is most important. The one teaching we need to keep coming back to is the first thing Jesus says in the book of Mark and is what the whole book of Mark is quickly getting to. That is the forgiveness of sins we have through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is no coincidence that Mark speeds through these parable teachings of Jesus because he wants to get to the good part which is when Jesus takes away all our sins on the cross. Amen.

Dear Motor Medics, I want to know about Cabin Air Filters.

Dear Dan, It’s good to know if your car or truck is equipped with a Cabin Air filter. A large majority of car and trucks made in recent years have one and you need to find out if yours is equipped. A Cabin Filter in your vehicle is much like your homes air handling system. Most of them are a paper medium and as incoming air passes through the dirt gets trapped in the filter where it can be removed with regular scheduled changing. These filters do much more than just filter the air coming in to your cabin, they protect the sensors and mechanical parts of the system and that’s why we started to see these in vehicles about the time that multiple sensors started appearing in the HVAC systems. So what happens when one gets real dirty? Your airflow slows down and you won’t have as much heat or A/C and the windows could fog easily. Don’t be tempted to remove one and leave it out for convenience. If you do there’s a high risk of damaging the expensive parts in the system when they become contaminated with dirt. Filters are readily available and most take about 5 minutes or so to install. Average prices range from $10.00 to $20.00 with service intervals on average of one year but some may dirty quicker depending on where you drive.

Dear Motor Medics, I love to take care of my own car doing all the maintenance and inspections that I can and keeping it all up to date but recently I bought a used 2013 Malibu and there is no transmission dipstick. The manual says go to the dealership to have it checked. Are they for real? What were they thinking?

-Mark Dear Mark, As the operator of a repair shop as well as the hosts of the Under The Hood radio show we like to see things made easy for our customers and listeners. By the way if you can’t check it easily at home we can’t check it easily at the shop.

Several years back the manufacturers started to remove transmission dipsticks sighting that the transmission fluid is not an item that needs to be checked nearly as often as the engine oil or brake fluid and that it should be checked as part of a regular maintenance program done at your dealership. We agree that it is not a fluid that typically is found low on a regular basis but even at our shop to check the fluid it has to be on a hoist. If there is no leakage it’s not the end of the world but if you ever do develop a small leak and want to check the level before driving to the repair shop it’s not something you will be able to do at home.
