People live up to the encouragement they receive -By Harvey Mackay A teacher asked her students if any of them had extra pencils they’d be willing to share with their classmates.

One student reluctantly raised his hand.

The teacher approached his desk and before the student handed her his pencil case, he told her that he didn’t mind sharing his pencils but he wanted them back when they were not being used.

The teacher agreed to return them at the end of the day but was wondering why this student was making such a big deal about the pencils. When she opened his pencil case everything became clear.

Each pencil was adorned with a few words of encouragement in what looked like red nail polish. The teacher realized how special these pencils were to the boy as she read the note on each one – You are smart. I love you. You can do great things. I am proud of you. You’re the best. I believe in you.

This story, adapted from the SunnySkyz website, demonstrates the power of encouragement. A person may not be as good as you tell her she is, but she’ll try harder thereafter.

Encouragement is defined as

something that makes someone feel more supported; something that makes someone more determined, hopeful or confident; and something that makes someone more likely to do something.

One of my favorite quotes on encouragement is from the dean of influencing people, Dale Carnegie: “Tell a child, a husband, or an employee that he is stupid or dumb at a certain thing, that he has no gift for it, and that he is doing it all wrong and you have destroyed almost every incentive to try to improve.

But use the opposite technique; be liberal with encouragement; make the thing seem easy to do; let the other person know that you have faith in his ability to do it; that he has an undeveloped flair for it – and he will practice until the dawn comes in at the window in order to excel.”

There are plenty of easy ways to make people feel special, such as a simple smile, taking them out for a meal, listening, doing a favor, giving a recommendation or compliment, or sending a hand-written note or card telling them how much you appreciate them.

Maya Angelou, the American poet, singer, memoirist and civil rights activist, said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Encouragement is an especially valuable tool for managing employees.

I can tell you from decades of business experience, it is critically important to emphasize positive achievements in performance reviews, and offer constructive advice for improving areas that need building up. Make employees feel like they can reach their potential.

What do your employees really want? A manager who cares will remember these basic elements: • “I want to feel important.”

No one wants to feel like a number, interchangeable and easy to forget. Get to know your employees as people; find out what makes each one unique and show them you’re paying attention to Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Ax I must have been about 11 years old. I had been working with my Dad “making wood” from the time when I was just a small lad. One day it was decided that I could take one of our old single-bit axes along to the woods and try it out. Needless to say, I was very excited, but I made myself act as if it was a normal happening, since one must refrain from showing emotion like adult men do.

The first thing I noticed was that the ax had a really long handle and the head was really heavy. I think the first swing went low and hit in the dirt at the bottom of the tree. Dad, having been observing from a distance, suggested that I move my grip closer to the ax head, which helped reduce the unhandy feeling of the heavy ax head.

It was then decided that maybe I should limb the fallen trees instead of trying to fell a tree. I then learned that when you cut a limb from the log, you stood on one side of the trunk and trimmed the limbs on the opposite side. This was so you didn’t “cut your leg off.” (one of those common threats, like poking your eye out, breaking your neck etc.) I also learned that when removing limbs, it was easier to cut against the lower side of the limb, rather than the upper side.

The use of the single-bit ax continued for a few more days until I had shown enough frustration with it and it was decided that maybe we should go to town and see it there was a lighter, shorter handled ax.

There was!! While picking it out, an elderly bachelor came over to tell us that I was too short to have an

• “I want to believe in you.” Employees want to know they can trust you – your knowledge, your expertise and your word. Show your commitment to helping them succeed and grow by listening, answering questions honestly and keeping your promises.

• “I want to succeed.” Most employees want to do a good job, even if they don’t necessarily want to advance. Explain your expectations clearly, and give them the training and support they need so they know you’re invested in helping them.

• “I want to be motivated.” Yes, motivation springs from inside, but employees want to be told why they should complete a project or improve quality in terms that make sense to them. Emphasize the job’s value to the organization, as well as the benefits the employee will enjoy – personal satisfaction as well as more tangible rewards – to unleash their enthusiasm and commitment.

As humorist Robert Henry said: “People do not live by bread alone. They need buttering up once in a while.”

ax. Dad said that I had been using another ax and that I was doing well with it. This off-hand compliment made me feel really good. Dad bought me an ax.

I had a hard time waiting to try it out. I filed the edge several times for maximum sharpness. I had been taught by my Grandfather how to sharpen many items, so the ax probably could have been used to shave facial hair, if I would have had any.

The big day arrived. We headed to the woods and I was able to try out my ax. Dad said that your first cuts should be on the side of the tree that you wanted the tree to fall toward. I was right handed and soon had chopped out an acceptable smile to guide the tree’s fall. I then went to the other side and again began to swing in the right-handed direction. Dad stopped me and explained that I should cut both sides of the tree from the same standing spot, using a left-hand swing to cut the other side. If I didn’t do it that way, the stump would have two peeks and it would be hard to direct the tree’s fall. Plus I was informed that the stumps

would be ugly to look at and give the neighbors the impression that a beaver took the tree down. I guess in those days a stumps appearance was more important, since it was normal to wander through the neighbor’s property when-ever you wished.

Wood cutting at that time was done with an ax and the common source of firewood was aspen or popple, since they were easier to cut. Several types of saws were tried before the chain saw was determined to be the most practical. An ax actually worked very well, but saws were faster and somewhat less labor intensive.

Felling trees was a thrill for me during my whole life. The challenge of dropping the tree exactly where it was to go was similar to scoring a touchdown, hitting a home run or a 3 point basket to win the game.

Obituaries Anthony J. “Tony” Hallermann Anthony J. “Tony” Hallermann, age 38 of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 21, 2019.

possibly could. They were his world, as he was theirs. Tony had an outgoing personality from little on and would spark energy in others. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. His words of wisdom and friendship will be dearly missed.

Tony was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. Tony was an active outdoorsman. He loved NASCAR, gokarting, stock car racing, playing poker, and spending time with family and friends.

Tony’s passion was racing. He started racing when he was 17 years old. Tony’s racing number was 37 and was called “Tony the Tiger.” Every time he and the U-Cars came out on the track the song “Eye of the Tiger” would be played.

Survivors include his parents, Wayne and Darlene Hallermann of Sauk Centre; aunts and uncle, Rose Rooney of Belgrade, Eileen (Reggie) Vasser of Lakeville, Wilfred (Janet) Boeckers of Sauk Centre, and Mary Ann Boeckers of Sauk Centre; and many cousins, relatives, and friends.

Tony was preceded in death by his infant child; grandparents, Ben and Nothburga “Sally” Hallermann and Leander and Amalia Boeckers; and uncles, Eugene Boeckers, William Rooney, James Hughes, and Carl Hoffmann.

Dorothy R. Holthaus, age 86 of Albany, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, June 29 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. concelebrating. Entombment will be at the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area in Albany.

Dorothy Rose Mohs was born November 10, 1932 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Thekla (Winter) Mohs. On October 20, 1953 she married Joseph Holthaus. Dorothy worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken and at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home, but mainly was a stay at home mom raising her family.

She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and the Christian Mothers.

Dorothy enjoyed reading, word find puzzles, BINGO, playing cards, and baking.

Holdingford High School. She was united in marriage to Delmer H. Skroch on February 6, 1961 in Duelm, MN. The couple made their home in the St. Joseph area where they took over the family dairy farm. In 1997, they moved to their retirement farm near Upsala. Shirley enjoyed making wine and moonshine, baking bread and arguing with Delmer. In retirement Shirley enjoyed crafting and beadwork.

Shirley is survived by her children; Karen (Fritz) Jacobs of Holdingford, Randy (Mary) of Swanville, Jamie (Jenny) of St. Joseph, Julie (Duane) Struzyk of Holdingford; 10 grandchildren and 9 great -grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters and four legged companion, Casey.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Delmer in 2013, infant daughter Lisa and sister Gloria Rudolph.

Margaret K. Messerich Margaret K. Messerich, age 78 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Friday, June 21, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2019 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. A family inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church.

Margaret Katherine Unger was born April 5, 1941 in Sauk Centre to Leo and Louise (Didier) Unger. She was the youngest of fourteen brothers and sisters in the Unger family. Margaret graduated from Sauk Centre High School in the Spring of 1959 and was united in marriage to James “Jim” Messerich on November 21, 1959 at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. Margaret and Jim made their home in Melrose and together raised their family of five children. Always alongside her husband, Margaret created an environment for a good family life. She was known by the nickname “Honey” in her family and with friends - everyone always commented on her sweet, gentle soul. She enjoyed fishing for walleyes during ice fishing season and pan fish the rest of the year. Margaret was known for her special hand-crafted fabric covered hangers. She was always ready to share them with her family and friends. One of her favorite past times was stopping at garage sales and looking for that special treasure.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Minnesota.

June 14, 2019: Friday night a caller reported herself for vandalizing property.

She just broke expensive flower pots by the Holdingford Elementary School. Two pots were damaged totaling approximately $175.00. Caller was not present. We are still trying to contact the reporter/perpetrator.

ATV Accident with Injuries: 9-yearold girl seriously injured in ATV rollover incident. Ava Smith, age 11, of Melrose, was driving a 2007 Polaris Ranger ATV owned by Nicholas and Gwen Shaw of Freeport. Ava was driving the ATV on the property’s driveway when she attempted to maneuver a curve and lost control of the ATV. Her passenger, Eve Shaw, age 9, of Freeport, who was not wearing a seat belt, flew from the ATV landing on the ground.

The ATV rolled and landed on its driver’s side. Ava was wearing her seat belt.

Ava sustained minor injuries while Eve sustained life-threatening injuries.

Eve was transported to the Melrose Hospital then airlifted to an unknown hospital in the Twin Cities. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Freeport Fire and Rescue and Melrose Ambulance assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

June 19, 2019: At 20:20 received a 911 call reporting a car and horse drawn buggy accident near the address of 18014 County 10, Long Prairie. Crist Hershberger (64) of rural Long Prairie was traveling westbound on the shoulder of County 10, in his buggy when he was struck by car from behind.

Richard Geise (31) of Little Falls was also traveling westbound on County 10 when he came upon the buggy and struck it from behind. Hershberger and Geise did not suffer any injuries and the horse appeared uninjured. The buggy and the 2005 Grand Prix involved both sustained damage. Geise was issued a citation for Failure to Drive with Due Care. Long Prairie Ambulance assisted at the scene.

June 20, 2019: At 03:15 Rodney Bramstedt (50) of Blooming Prairie, MN was stopped for traffic violations on HWY 287 just outside of Grey Eagle. Bramstedt was issued a citation for Driving After Revocation.

Upsala Burglary: On June 24, 2019 at approximately 7:29 am, received a report of a business burglary at the Centra Sota Coop in the city of Upsala, MN. Sometime over the weekend the door on the north end of the business was pried open and the suspect(s) made entry inside the building. Some cash, clothing and candy bars were stolen from the business. The incident occurred between 5 pm on Friday 6-21-2019 and early Monday morning on 6-24-2019.

Gangloff has served the Sauk Centre church for the past five years as a halftime pastor.

Every now and then it is good to take a “morning inventory” and reflect on the grace of God. This morning when I opened my eyes I thanked God for protecting me while I slept. As I turned off the alarm clock, I thanked Him for sounds and my hearing. As I rested for a moment before I got out of bed I could feel my beating heart which He kept going while I slept.

As I stood up, I thanked Him for my balance, healthy legs and my slippers.

As I took a shower, I thanked Him for the warm water, shampoo, soap, a towel and a mat on the floor to keep me from

slipping. Then I continued by thanking Him for a mirror, razor, deodorant and on and on until I thanked Him for all of the articles of clothing He provided for me to wear today.

And then I thanked Him for the words of the psalmist that reminded me of His promise: “no good thing will He withhold from those whose walk is blameless.”

It was then that I had to pause in deep humility and gratefully thank Him for His love and grace that I do not deserve. It is so easy for me to accept the gifts of God - including my salvation without realizing that everything I have or ever have had are gifts from God. And as I reflected on that verse the word blameless kept ringing in my ears as though it was my friendly alarm clock. I, of all people, am certainly not blameless. As I meditated on the word blameless for a few minutes and thought about everything I am or have, it’s not because I am blameless. It’s because of His unending love and grace!

Dear Motor Medics, I recently heard you talking about timing belts on your radio show and how everyone with a vehicle should find out if theirs is equipped with one and what the recommended service interval was. I asked my local shop if I had one and they said I do and in fact it was past due by almost 10,000 miles. My vehicle is a 2003 Honda Accord. I have owned it since new and have never had it changed to my knowledge unless it was part of some service package. Is a timing belt something I can do myself at home with basic hand tools? I have changed other belts. If I don’t do it the correct way can I damage something or can I just take it to a shop to have them finish it?

-Craig in Kittanning, Pennsylvania Dear Craig, Yes a timing belt can be changed at home on many vehicles but specialty tools are required for some. Before you start any home-project make sure you are very familiar and comfortable with the job ahead of you and follow all safety procedures. A timing belt is a job that requires very close attention to procedure. If the belt comes loose or is not installed correctly and the engine becomes out of time it can spell disaster for the engine. It can even mean having to replace the engine in some cases.

Study the job closely before attempting this one.

purchase ourselves. My son and I have spent a lot of time together doing small mechanical projects and I think he can take care of the small things that may come up on his own while he is away.

For anyone who may be traveling away from home what kinds of items do you suggest to have stored in the vehicle for small emergencies?

-Robert in Holdrege, Nebraska Dear Robert, It you’re a well-seasoned mechanic or everyday driver having an emergency kit in the vehicle is a great idea. Even If you don’t use it yourself it may come in handy for others you come across.

Everyone will have a different idea and some personal choices but here are some basics. Jumper cables for sure, a small empty fuel can to prevent a fire, fire extinguisher and basic hand tools; a small basic kit does not take up much room and can be used for many repairs.

A flashlight with extra batteries and some type of signal to warn people if you are disabled in the dark like an illuminated triangle set. These are all in addition to the vehicles jack and tool kit and any other items that you have found.

Grey Eagle City May 14, 2019 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 14th day of May 2019 in council chambers. Council members present were Thom Muellner, Roland Ahrendt and Bill Pohlmann. Council member Brian Hollenkamp was absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Dan Berscheid, Joe Krueger, Angie Tepley, Marcus Berscheid, Linda Volkman, Tina Mehr, Mike Bitz, Brian Koehn and Derek Sprenger.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the April 9, 2019 meeting as written.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the April 11, 2019 Board of Equalization meeting as written. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

City Attorney Joe Krueger presented the council with a purchase agreement for the 55’x100’ piece of property that the city is interested in purchasing for the placement of the new lift station. The purchase price to be $15,000 with all costs associated to the sale of the property being paid by the city. Rural Development needs to approve the purchase as part of the sewer rehabilitation project before moving forward with the platting requirements. An anticipated closing date of June 30th is expected; however the date can be moved ahead or pushed back.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the purchase agreement as follows: $15,000 for 55’x100’ with all costs associated to the sale of the property being paid by the city and upon approval by Rural Development. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the Mayor and Clerk signing the purchase agreement on behalf of the City. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Pastor Mike Bitz was in attendance to discuss the sale and intended split of the parsonage house owned by St. John’s Church. Pastor Bitz stated that he was not in attendance to seek approval from the council for the sale of the property.

He merely wanted the council to address simple property line adjustments that would not create undue financial hardship that the current ordinance seems to require. He would like the council to handle this the same way that sales have been allowed in the past. The council will look at the current ordinance.

The council discussed a fines list for the courts with Joe Krueger.

This would enable a payable offense where the fine can be paid without

needing to go to court. The court would add $75 fee plus $10 law library fee on top of whatever fine the council sets. They will send over a fines list for the council to review.

Dan Berscheid was in attendance to discuss the following Fire Department items: 1. Recommend that Glendon Becker be added to the Fire Department roster.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to add Glendon Becker to the Fire Department roster. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

2. Increase the Relief Association Benefits from $1050 per year of service to $1,200 per year of service.

The assets for these benefits exceed the liabilities that will be paid out for the current roster.

3. Recommend the removal of Landkammer and Tschida from the Fire Department roster.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to terminate Austin Landkammer and Craig Tschida from the Fire Department roster. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the building permit application for Central Minnesota Credit Union for a privacy fence on the property line on the east side of the lot adjoining Erik Cole. A signed agreement by Erik Cole was submitted. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the building permit application for James Brake to move in a 16’x22’ garage with a cement floor and foundation, allowing for required setbacks. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Linda Volkman was in attendance to discuss her property lines that runs along the Walburn property. She is disputing where the lines are versus where she was told the lot lines were. She also questioned why the lift station was being moved into the city limits next to her property.

The current lift station location causes issues with the close proximity to Trace Lake and the fact that it is too low. The equipment at the new location wouldn’t be any more visible than what is at the current location.

Linda quoted approximately $120 per side to have a new vinyl sign added to each side of the community sign to replace the old ones.

Angie Tepley requested approval to remove the base for Pat Quirk’s headstone and put in a new 5’ base so that a stone could be also be placed for her Mom, Cindy Olson. The Council agreed to the request.

Brian Koehn presented the 2018 audit to the Council. The cemetery investment fund with American Funds needs to be revisited and

look at changing into a more stable fund. Brian reported that City funds are in healthy condition. The state recommendation is to have 3 to 6 months on hand.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to close funds and transfer the balances as recommended by accountant. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Brian informed the council that due to the certificate of indebtedness no longer being included in the fire hall loan at Central Minnesota Credit Union, this loan would need to be paid off as soon as possible.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to pay off the remaining fire hall loan at Central Minnesota Credit Union. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the 2018 audit as presented. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed property clean up. The Clerk was instructed to send letters to require clean up by June 11th.

It has been reported to council members and employees that there are two residents that have chickens. The current ordinance does not allow for the keeping of chickens unless approved by resolution by the council. The clerk was instructed to send letters to require removal by June 11th.

The Clerk presented the council with an out-of-state travel policy.

The council will review and make a decision at the June meeting.

The Clerk provided the council with an update from Bryan Bye on the sewer project. The final plans have been submitted to Rural Development for approval.

A motion was made to authorize the Clerk to close out the AmeriFunds account and invest into a certificate of deposit. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to put the same eagle as on the City truck on each side of the community sign for $120 per side. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

National Night Out will be discussed at June meeting.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to set June 29, 2019 from 8:00-11:00 a.m. for city wide clean up date. Roll offs will be provided by Tom’s Refuse and a price sheet will be on site. City council members will monitor the roll offs and collect fees for the items brought. This clean up date will be open to the public. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. 2020 vacation – discuss at next meeting.

2. Hire Dave Blaeser to help with lawn mowing.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the fund transfers as follows: $80,000 from Central Minnesota Credit Union checking to the First State Bank of Swanville checking, and $148.12 from the General Fund of which $31.12 goes to the water fund and $117 goes to the sewer fund for fire hall, old city hall and library utilities.

How to help your kids make extra money this summer If you’re the parent of a high school graduate, congrats!

Getting through high school was a lot of work for them, and between the stress of having a firsttime driver and the hours spent helping with test prep, I know it’s been a ton of work for you, too.

There’s plenty of time to kick back and celebrate, but before your son or daughter heads off to college, they probably need to save some extra cash for the upcoming school year. And even though they may not admit it, they still need your guidance.

Here are just a few tips to help your kids end the summer with more cash in the bank.

Set clear goals Stashing more money in the college fund is a great starting goal. But you can help your teen get real results by mak-

ing sure their goals are: 1. Specific. “Earn money for college” is vague. But “save $1,000 by the time I start school on August 21” is a specific goal.

2. Measurable. How will your teen know when they’ve hit their goal? Easy!

When they save $1,000.

3. Deadline-driven. Help your teen pick a day on the calendar to have their goal completed by. For example: “by freshman orientation,” “by the time classes start,” etc.

4. Personal. Your teen needs a personal connection to their goal. It has to be something they want, or they won’t be motivated to keep going.

5. Written down. Written goals are way more real, and the act of writing will help your teen express exactly what they want to achieve. Plus, written goals act as daily motivators when your teen keeps them somewhere they’ll see them every day!

Help them figure out their options by asking them what they’re passionate about, pointing out their strengths and skills, and working with them to brainstorm creative ways to turn those natural abilities into cash.

And last but not least, remind them it’s okay to leave a little room in the budget for fun stuff. After all that hard work, they’ve earned it!

A Fourth Funny

The Fourth of July was coming up, and the nursery school teacher took the opportunity to tell her class about patriotism. “We live in a great country,” she said. “One of the things we should be happy is that, in this country, we are all free.”

Qualifications • Exceptional organization skills – physical and digital • Strong communication skills – verbal and written • Strong typing skills – fast and accurate • Keen eye for detail – design flaws, spelling and grammatical errors, web code issues • Customer service experience – work directly with customers via phone and email • Basic file format and color knowledge – PDF, PSD, EPS, TIFF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, CMYK, RGB • Search engine familiarity – Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Chrome, etc.

-Russ Dear Russ, S o m e people disagree with this stance, but my answer is no. I understand how important it is to take the match in a situation like that, but one of the things I’ve learned over the years is that personal finance is 80 percent behavior and only 20 percent head knowledge.

In the short term, the power of focusing on changing your behavior and working hard to pay off debt will supersede the mathematics involved where your company match is concerned. In other words, if you stop saving temporarily, for just a year or so—and wipe out all

your consumer debt—you’ll gain a tremendous amount of financial power.

And this will be more beneficial to you than one or two years of your company match.

I’d never tell anyone to stop investing, or taking advantage of a company match, for several years.

However, if you put it on hold for just a little while and clean up your debt mess—then go back to investing for retirement—you’ll reap many more rewards down the road. You’ll permanently change your financial behavior, and you’ll be able to invest even more for retirement and other things.
