Correcting the blind spots between men and women

According to a terrific new book by the two gurus in the field of male/ female relationships, Barbara Annis and John Gray, there are eight gender “blind spots” between men and women in business. “Work With Me” addresses the issues that create tension between the sexes at work, resulting in misunderstandings and miscommunication that affect success and satisfaction in both their work and personal lives.

I recently invited John Gray to address a group I was hosting. He spoke very specifically about the differences between the two genders. I thought I was pretty advanced in my thinking prior to hearing him speak. Now I realize I still have plenty to learn!

So I was eager to read about how these differences affected business. This book is eye-opening, to say the least.

I’ve witnessed a sea change in business relationships during my long career.

Turns out, there’s an ocean of awareness that we’ve barely dipped our toes into.

Annis and Gray interviewed more than 100,000 male and female executives at 60-plus Fortune 500 companies.

Their research led them to identify “how truly blind men and women are to each other’s intentions and expectations in today’s workplace.” Inappropriate behavior exists, but they conclude that much of it is “unintended - the result of misinterpretation and miscommunication between men and women, who have little idea why the other gender thinks and acts as it does.”

They cite the importance of “gender intelligence,” which they define as “an active consciousness that views gender differences as strengths, not weaknesses. It is an understanding that both nature and nurture play a significant role in a person’s life.”

Because we’ve been conditioned to believe that men and women are the same, they contend, we often expect the other gender to think and act the same.

And without gender intelligence, they write, “men and women will never truly understand and appreciate each other’s authentic, complementary nature.”

In a nutshell, these are the eight blind spots that they have identified:

Do women want men to change?

“The traditional business model we work in today . . . is based on a male model of work and a male code of behavior,” the authors say. “We have to stop fixing women to act like men and then blaming men for acting like themselves. . . When we understand our differences, our language begins to change and our expectations become grounded in reality instead of assumptions.”

Do men appreciate women? “While men thrive on recognition for their results, women feel most appreciated and validated when they’re acknowledged for the challenges they faced in attaining those results,” they write. “Men don’t realize that for many women, a collaborative work environment, peer and supervisory support, and building sharing and reciprocal relationships are as important as money, status and power.”

The couple will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a Mass July 7, at 9 AM, at the Sacred Heart Parish in Freeport followed by an open house with dinner and reception until 4 PM at the Freeport Community Center.

Do men have to walk on eggshells with women? Annis and Gray say “men say they often feel they can’t express their ideas or be their natural, casual selves without the fear of inadvertently saying or doing something that may upset a woman.”

Do women ask too many questions?

Women generally ask more questions than men, according to the authors, but those questions are intended to stimulate an exchange of ideas, discover what’s important, and arrive at a best possible outcome.

Do men listen? “One of the leading ways men sabotage their success in working with women is by not taking the time to show that they are listening and, in the process, demonstrate their

care and concern,” they write.

Are women too emotional? Generally, the authors say, men are just as emotional as women but tend to conceal their feelings except to people closest to them.

Are men insensitive? “Many men today make an effort to be more actively conscious of the people and events around them,” they say. “Nevertheless, being sensitive is not a natural and effortless response for men.”

Mackay’s Moral: The battle of the sexes should have winners on both sides.

Obituary Mary Clark Hird

A celebration of the life of Mary Clark Hird , age 97 who passed away March 16, 2013, will be held on Saturday July 6th at 11 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan in Sauk Centre, MN. What the airlines have taught me about marriage

I feel like I’m in a bad marriage with United Airlines. I’ve been with them for 25 years, flown 1,245,000 miles, and most of the time it feels like they don’t know I’m alive. In our first years together, they treated me like a queen.

On my flight coming up this weekend, I may end up in the luggage bin. A “technical error” caused them to give away my seat.

Admittedly this is a first world problem. My friend Ephraim who lives in Haiti doesn’t spend time thinking about service on airlines. He’s got bigger things to think about like helping people eat. I try to think about that every time I look at the upgrade list and see that with my million mile status, I am #25 on the list.

On the grand scheme of things, a relationship with an airline is not something that should bother me. But when you’ve been committed to someone, it’s disheartening when you feel cast aside.

So here are some things I’ve learned from my relationship with United that I will use to keep the spark in my marriage: - When you put your spouse on hold, don’t try to placate them by singing the same old song. Especially when it’s the same 5 bars you have been playing for 25 years.

- The longer you are together, the more bags you should be allowed.

- Don’t send a card through UPS celebrating the years you’ve been together. Save the money and give your marriage an upgrade instead.

- Don’t send them to another country when they call. They’ll recognize the accent. Instead, fly them there for a prepaid vacation.

- When your spouse is checking in, don’t send them to a machine. Extend human contact so they remember who

- After 25 years, carry on bags are not only allowed, they are encouraged.

There should be plenty of space for them.

- Don’t spend all your money on pleasing the CEO. Your spouse has been with you longer and helped get you where you are.

- Money may be important, but loyalty keeps you together.

- Have the kind of marriage your spouse will talk to others about. Without swearing.

Like I said, in the grand scheme of things, a relationship with an airline is not something to lose sleep over. But these are things to think about in the relationships that are important to you.

Especially if you want to keep them.

One of the world’s greatest speakers from ancient Greece was Demosthenes.

He was born with a severe speech defect. To overcome his problem he would practice speaking with small pebbles in his mouth. He overcame his difficulty.

The Apostle Paul said of himself the following: “I did not come with eloquence-” my “bodily presence is weak and (my) speech contemptible-” and “though my condition put you to the test you did not scorn or despise me.” Yet he was and is recognized as one of the greatest missionaries, theologians and teachers who ever lived.

Handicapped? Have problems?

Lacking in skills and talents? Need to improve on the gifts God has given you?

Jesus said, “My grace is all you need, for my power is strongest when you are weak.”

When we look at ourselves and feel inadequate, we need to turn our thoughts to God and realize that we are His handiwork. He has important work for each of us to do. But we must give our all to Him and let Him work His miracles through us.

A: Aquatic plants are essential components of most freshwater ecosystems.

Many of Minnesota’s most sought-after fish species depend heavily on aquatic vegetation for food, protection from predators and reproduction.

In addition to fish, many wildlife species depend on aquatic plants for food and nesting sites. Aquatic plants not eaten by waterfowl support many insects and other aquatic invertebrates that serve as important food sources for migratory birds and their young. Emergent aquatic vegetation also provides nesting cover for a variety of waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds and songbirds.

The reproductive success of ducks nesting near lakes, for example, is closely tied to the availability of aquatic plants.

Nasty weather causes havoc in area T h r e e straight nights of stormy weather caused lots of problems for many this past weekend.

In some areas upwards of seven to eight inches of rain made a mess of fields, with many areas of standing water left after the deluge, especially Thursday night and early Friday morning when most of the rain fell. Our farm had 4.5 inches during that time, but areas to the north and south had even heavier amounts. Reports from the city of Starbuck indicated more than six inches fell during the night, with the roof of the town’s bowling alley caving in, either from all the rain or high winds that

ripped through the area.

To the south, in the Benson area, numerous trees were downed, many of which simply uprooted because the ground is so saturated. The beautiful golf course in that city is said to have lost more than 100 trees from the storm.

A farm to the northeast of Benson had two 70-foot silos go down from the wind, estimated at over 80 miles per hour. Several turkey barns were destroyed in the area around Swift Falls, which is located in the northeastern part of Swift County. The picturesque park in that small town, hit hard by a tornado just three years ago, was again a target with numerous trees down which forced the park to close. Twisted sheets of pole barn steel were strewn about, and bits of insulation were scattered throughout the area, including the cemetery at the edge of town.

One comment heard several times while visiting with residents over the weekend was “the drought must be over!” It’s unusual to have such large areas affected by heavy rain for two or three consecutive nights. We received an additional one inch Friday night and

That was enough to refill low spots in fields that had managed to partially drain from the earlier downpour. This nasty weather once again illustrates just how much we depend on electricity to power many of the things we take for granted. Running water, pumping fuel, and cooling or freezing our food are just a few of the things that were made impossible by the many downed power lines and poles. We had a crew from Runestone Electric at our farm last Friday, and they worked so quickly and efficiently to get the wires spliced and back up on the poles. These crews work long hours in difficult conditions to get their customers back on-line, and they have earned a hearty “thank you.” The situation in the metro area, with thousands of residents still without power is serious. Downed trees seem to be the biggest cause of outages, and they must be dealt with first before power can be restored. Crews have been brought in from neighboring states to assist with that massive clean-up job.

The tax on commercial storage, added in the final days of the recently completed session to the massive tax bill passed by the Legislature, is certainly causing discussion among many business owners in Minnesota. Much of their talk seems to be centered on expanding in other states where there is no such tax on storage fees. I don’t think the ramifications of this new tax were very well thought out, because opposition is strong and would once again

Local Municipality Minutes Burtrum City June 3, 2013 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 3rd

by Mayor Allen. All members answered roll call.

Minutes of the May 6th meeting were read and approved on a motion by Anna Payne and seconded by Kevin Wunderlich. Upon vote motion carried.

The finance report was read and approved on a motion by Ron Strassburg and seconded by Clara Taft. Upon vote motion carried.

Checks number 7117 thru 7129 were approved for payment on a motion by Clara Taft and seconded

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. The curb on the corner of Woodman Street South and State Street needs to be framed in and new cement put in.

2. Alleys need to be graded a couple of times each year. Andy will contact Herdering so that they can be graded properly. Once they have been graded and the holes backfilled, the City should be able to maintain them.

3. The softball fields need to be dragged and maintained so that they are ready for the softball tournaments for GEMFest.

4. Andy will contact Preferred Controls to see when they are able to attend a meeting to discuss the SCADA system.

5. The chlorinator is now up and running. If residents smell chlorine, it means that the chlorine levels are too low, not too high and should only be temporary.

6. Matt released water from the ponds.

7. The zero turn lawnmower has no compression. Eagle Auto submitted an estimate for replacement of the motor and labor to be $1,500-$2,000.

8. The culvert by Duane Karls will be patched until Todd County can come in to do culvert work on Maple Street South. Todd County Engineer Loren Fellbaum stated that if weather permits, the work should be able to take place sometime in July.

waiting lists and need to turn campers away; and Whereas, there is room for, and planned development of Grey Eagle Lions Park to allow for RV camp sites; and Whereas, Todd County supports the Grey Eagle Lions Park Project; and Whereas, the City of Grey Eagle and its residents cannot afford to take on this regional park project alone.

Now, therefore be it resolved, that the Grey Eagle City Council authorizes the submission of a request to the Minnesota State Legislature for 2014 bonding funds for improvements to Grey Eagle Lions Park for $210,520, of 50% of the development costs.

Bicyclists, drivers urged to Share the Road as summer arrives Warmer temperatures mean more bicyclists will return to the road, and together, motorists and bicyclists must share the road, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and Minnesota Department of Transportation.

In the last five years (2008-12), 44 bicyclists died on Minnesota roads and 4,599 were injured. During this period, more than half of bicyclist deaths (24) and 60 percent of injuries (2,852) occurred between June and September.

In 2012, seven bicyclists were killed and 875 were injured on Minnesota roads.

“To reduce crashes, motorists must treat bicyclists like they’d treat any other vehicle,” said Sue Groth, MnDOT state traffic engineer. “And bicyclists on the road must act like vehicles—meaning stop at stop signs, signal turns and be visible.”

When and Where Bike Crashes Happen in Minnesota: Each year, about one-third of bicycle crashes occur during afternoon rush hours. Three out of five bike crashes occur in cities with populations of 50,000 or more.

Who’s At Risk in Minnesota: Each year, riders ages 15-24 account for around one-third of all bicyclists killed or injured, and nearly 75 percent of bicyclists killed or injured are male. In the past five years, about 150 children bicyclists ages 10-14 are killed or injured annually.

Leading Crash Factors: The primary reason crashes occur for both bicyclists and motorists is failure to yield right of way. For bicyclists, another leading crash factor is disregard for a traffic control device - such as a stop sign or traffic light. For drivers, it’s inattention.

Both motorists and bicyclists are at fault for half of all bicycle-vehicle crashes.

Bicyclist Tips: • Be seen: Wear bright clothing/reflective gear and use lights in both the front and back of the bike.

• Wear a helmet and ensure it fits correctly.

• Signal turns.

• Ride on the road, and ride in the same direction as traffic.

DNR asks for volunteers to help Minnesota’s loon population

Volunteers can help Department of Natural Resources (DNR) biologists discover the major cause of death of the common loon by collecting dead loon specimens for testing. This statewide study to find answers about loon mortality is being conducted by the DNR’s nongame wildlife program.

“Small studies have been conducted in the past, but they were limited to looking for high mercury concentrations,” said Kevin Woizschke, DNR nongame wildlife specialist and loon watcher coordinator. “This new statewide effort will help answer the big question of what kills our loons. Minnesota’s loon population is about 12,000 birds and the numbers appear stable, but there are still questions about loon mortality.”

The nongame program is asking for help in collecting loons that recently died with no signs of decomposition or obvious predator trauma. Visibly rotten loons should not be collected. To collect a specimen for testing, use disposable gloves to put the dead loon in a plastic bag. To reduce disease risk, try to avoid bare-handed contact when handling dead animals. If gloves are not available, turn a plastic shopping bag inside out and scoop up the specimen with the bag. Place the specimen in a freezer as soon as possible. If a freezer is not available place the specimen in a cooler, surrounded by ice.

It is important to deliver the specimen as soon as possible to a local DNR office. All loons need to be labeled with the name of the county, lake, nearest town where it was found and along with person’s name, address and telephone number.
