Do nothing, get nothing -By Harvey Mackay Once in a village there were two friends who spent most of their time resting under a tree and thinking about what they should do with their lives.

One day they noticed that the women in the village had to carry water pots from the river far away.

Regardless of how many rounds they made, the water was never enough for their families’ daily needs.

The friends went to the village and offered to carry water pots back from the river for 25 cents per pot. Everyone liked the offer, and their business grew fast. Soon they were making 50 to 100 rounds daily.

After a few years, the friends were the richest men in the village. Then one of them realized that although they were healthy and young, they wouldn’t stay that way forever.

“What would happen to the families then?” he asked.

But the other said, “Forget it. We’re doing great, let’s just enjoy this time.”

The first friend wanted to do something more. One day he saw a potter making pots and noticed one pot had a long narrow neck.

He thought, “What if we make a long clay pipe and brought water to the village?”

The other friend had thousands of reasons why it was never going to work, but the first one decided to try it.

A lot of problems came his way, but six or seven months later, the pipe was in place and the water started to flow to the village. Now he could offer a thousand pots per day, and he cut the rate to 10 cents per pot.

Income flowed into the first friend’s pocket, but the second was jobless now, because who wants pots for 25 cents if they can have them for 10 cents?

In other words, if you don’t change anything, nothing will change. Sometimes you have to take some risks and jump at opportunities.

“When you’re through changing, you’re through,” said advertising executive Bruce Barton.

Call it progress. Call it innovation. Call it sheer brilliance. “Because we’ve always done it this way” becomes “I wish I would have thought of that.”

Shopping malls replaced downtowns and on-line shopping may soon spell the demise of malls. Television replaced radio, and now cable stations and streaming services aplenty offer thousands of shows on demand on devices that we carry in our pocket. Air travel was once the stuff of science fiction; now civilians can apply for space travel.

Businesses and individuals should always be looking for new ways to stay competitive. A business can’t stand still. Change is inevitable and unavoidable.

At a time when newspapers and magazines have gone out of business or gone fully digital, “National Geographic” remains in print and thrives because it embraced technology. The “National Geographic” brand has more than 65 million loyal followers on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, plus branching into TV programming.

Domino’s Pizza realized it had to change when it learned that its promised fast delivery time was hurting its reputation for quality. The chain orchestrated a massive advertising and social media campaign to get their word out about new recipes and improved quality, and sales skyrocketed.

Netflix fundamentally changed the way TV is consumed. Netflix started by renting and buying physical DVDs, but a year later started its subscription service. A huge change came in 2007 when the company focused on streaming content.

Apple has probably done more to reinvent itself than any other company. From computers

Embrace change, but not at the expense of forgetting history. Learning the lessons of the past opens the door to future innovation.

If a stonecutter from ancient Greece came to work today in a stone mason’s yard, the only significant change would be the design he would be asked to carve on the gravestones. The tools he would use would be fundamentally the same, only now they might be electric.

Throughout history, a craftsman who had learned his trade after five or seven years of apprenticeship would have learned everything he or she would ever need to use during their lifetime. That would certainly not be so today. In today’s world, any tradesman or professional will have to acquire new knowledge every four or five years or become obsolete.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne The Past

When I sometimes have an opportunity to discuss good old days with someone who has lived through those times, I hear some interesting stories. I recently spent about an hour sharing stories with an individual that was in his nineties. I’ll relate some of them to you.

He remembers the Armistice Day blizzard from 1940. He was in town and had to walk home, which was close to 2 miles. When he left town the snow was about ankle deep and by the time he got home, the snow was up to his knees. He said that the wind didn’t just blow or howl, it actually screamed. The amount of snow was less than some other storms we have had, but the wind blew such a great volume of snow, filling roads, railroad tracks, farmyards and towns with over 10 feet deep drifts. The result was a loss of 146 lives. The wind and volume of snow it carried caused some farm people to lose their way from the house to the barn.

He recalled a neighbor young boy, who had his arm cut off at the wrist by a corn picker.

His folks took him to the doctor with a team of horses pulling a double wagon box. The doctor simply pulled skin down the arm, over the stump, sewed it and sent him home. He was very uncomfortable, but recovered well.

Another instance that interested me was a story about a young fellow who was cutting cord wood for a fellow for about a year. His pay was $12.00 per month. Someone stopped by the place he was cutting and offered him $13.00 per month. The fellow left his current job immediately and went to the new job happy with his increased fortune.

There was a neighbor on the next farm that had a sleeping problem. The fellow didn’t buy a car, since he felt his condition would make car driving dangerous. It was not uncommon to be talking to the fellow and he would fall asleep. He knew about his condition, so he would lean against a solid object so he wouldn’t fall. One day he was coming home from town

with his F-12 Farmall, fell asleep, ran into the ditch and rolled over. When he was found, the tractor was still running, but it was upside down on top of him with one of the drive wheels rotating 3 inches from his head. Four fellows from the neighborhood shut off the tractor and rolled it off of him. He wasn’t hurt bad, but his movements were quite restricted by the tractor on top of him. He felt that maybe it would be safer to depend on horses.

The question was asked about the pay received in the CCC Camp. The answer was $21.00 per month, with half of the pay being sent home to the parents and half being kept by the kid. In those days it wasn’t a bad deal, since it included food, a bed and a chance to go to high school. High school probably wouldn’t be available at home, since the kid would have been needed for farm work, having no time for school.

The last story is rather unusual. Between Swanville and Burtrum highway 28 crossed a railroad track. Since the crossing was at an angle, the highway made an S turn to cross the tracks. Since there were trees and brush along the tracks, it could have been called a hazardous intersection. One Sunday, back in the 1930’s a car filled with people was hit by the train at the intersection. The train destroyed the car as far back as the back of the back seat. There were destroyed people scattered along the tracks and of course the highway was blocked. The trunk of the car contained watermelons. The crowd inspecting the wreck site began eating the watermelons. Hard to imagine, guess to understand, one would have to have been there.

John G. Ainali

John G. Ainali, age 81 of St. Rosa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, June 19 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

John George Ainali was born March 11, 1940 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to George and Ruth (Murphy) Ainali. He was united in marriage to Delores Majerus on June 11, 1958 at Our Lady of the

Josephine “Josie” Terwey

“Well, it’s about time! Glad to get that out of the way.”

That’s probably what Josephine Zehnle Terwey, age 105, said to herself as she passed from this life to the next on June 11, 2021.

Josie was born on June 5, 1916 in Reynolds Township, near Long Prairie, Minnesota. She went to country school by foot and St. Mary’s Grade School by horse and buggy.

At Long Prairie High School she was a member of the Peppy Peppers Pep Squad. Graduating in 1933 during the Great Depression, she did what many young people do today – lived with her parents during two “gap years.” It was during this time that she won the title of “Miss Todd County” in a 1935 contest sponsored by the Commercial Club. She was awarded a chaperoned train/cruise trip to New Orleans, New York and Chicago, and thus began her lifelong love of travel.

Josie went on to attend the College of St. Benedict. She said that back then girls were supposed to marry the hired man from a neighboring farm, but being determined to go to college, she sewed a school uniform and got her brother to drive her to St. Ben’s. So off she went, graduating with a degree in Home Economics in 1939. The highlight of her college years was the opportunity to spend two summers in New York City’s Harlem District, volunteering at Friendship House, a charity closely associated with the Catholic Worker movement.

Josie was always proud to have known Dorothy Day and read The Catholic Worker newspaper for the rest of her life.

After graduating from St. Ben’s, Josie moved to Philadelphia and became a Registered Dietician.

She went on to work as a dietician at the U.S. Air Force Hospital at Mather Field in California during World War II. Josie married Leander “Lee” Terwey in Reno, Nevada in 1943. This was a war-time wedding, so the cleaning ladies at the church served as witnesses, and there was no money to spare for wedding photos. If you think Josie didn’t bring this up once in a while, you’d be wrong. Josie returned with Lee to Georgia where he was stationed, then

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and was on the Millwood Township Board for many years. John’s favorite hobby was competing in tractor pulls.

John was a good husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was always there to help his family and whoever was in need.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Delores Ainali of St. Rosa; children, Deanne (Mark) Dierkhising of Melrose, Jeff (Jerri) Ainali of Melrose, Tim (Barb) Ainali of Grey Eagle, Mark (Jill) Ainali of Grey Eagle, Pat Ainali of St. Rosa, Eric Ainali of St. Anthony, and Jon (Cristy) Ainali of Grey Eagle; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren with two on the way; and sister, Barbara Johnson of Little Falls.

John was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Arlene Hiltunen, Louise Hagstrom, and Elaine Ainali.

Following Lee’s military service the young family moved to St. Cloud, eventually buying the farm of Josie’s parents, John and Anna Zehnle, near Long Prairie. Rather than hire help for the farm work, Josie and Lee had ten children. Josie claimed she wanted each and every one of them, but then laughed, so we are left to wonder.

After working as a homemaker for a number of years, Josie started a new career as a social worker for Todd County, specializing in services to the elderly. Following their retirements, Josie and Lee enjoyed gardening, playing cards, reading, doing crossword puzzles and traveling, especially to military reunions. They often entertained family and other guests. Josie was a fantastic cook! She enjoyed quilting with all of her quilting friends.

She continued volunteering in the community, and many will remember her serving them hamburgers at the VFW until she was in her 90s. Those who knew Josie appreciated her generosity, fun-loving friendliness, and sense of humor. She was always ready to share a joke or express one of her many opinions.

Josie’s health declined over the past few years, which was a great frustration to her. She recently said that she didn’t think she’d get into heaven because she had said a few bad words. When told she should go to confession, she demurred, saying she planned to use the words a few more times! Hopefully the powers that be will grant her dispensation.

Josie was preceded in death by her parents John and Anna Zehnle, husband Leander Terwey, daughters Ann Orth and Louise Terwey, grandson Timothy Orth, and siblings Herman, Gertrude, Joseph, Lawrence, Arnold, Rita and Frances.

Survivors include her sister Elizabeth Pritchett and eight remaining children and their families: Joseph (Mary), William, Carl (Audrey), Paul (Linda), Roger (Edie), Martha Benton, Susan (Nick Pederson), George and son-in-law Donald Orth, 23 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren.

Josie was a lifelong member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Long Prairie. Mass of Christian Burial will be held there on Saturday, June 26, 2021, with rosary at 9:30, visitation beginning at 9:45, followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. Mass will be live streamed. Sharron Westrom

Westrom, another new teacher. The two were married on June 5, 1971, in Sandstone, and this year they were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary together. Sharron taught both 1st and 3rd grades for 34 years, and she was a candidate for teacher of the year. She retired in 2004. Sharron loved spending time with her family, especially playing games (carbles) with her 7 grandchildren. Her grandchildren will miss her greatly! She loved camping and traveling and particularly, country music. Ed and Sharron attended many country music concerts. She was a member of the Holdingford Community Church and the Holdingford Lioness Club.

Sharron is survived by her husband, Ed, Holdingford; her two daughters, Heather (Jeremy) Johnson, Sauk Rapids, and Melanie (Troy) Knase, Duluth. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and her brother, Richard (Terri) Sexton, California.

She is preceded in death by her parents and an infant granddaughter.

Elvera Elizabeth Beuning was born November 10, 1939 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Lawrence and Viola (Cremers) Beuning. Vera graduated from Melrose High School in 1957. She was united in marriage to Jerome Von Wahlde on August 13, 1958 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis. Vera worked at the Freeport Café which she and Jerome owned and operated for a year and a half. She enjoyed helping Jerome on the farm but primarily was the family caretaker, raising their eight children.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle, Christian Mothers, and the St. Frances Mission Group. Vera was a wonderful cook and enjoyed baking pies. She loved to dance and was a member of the Polka Lovers Club. Vera enjoyed gardening and flowers, roses

House passes agriculture finance bill The Minnesota House on Saturday approved 111-20 an omnibus finance package which provides an additional $10 million for agricultural aspects of the state’s budget for the next two years.

State Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, is the lead Republican on the House Agriculture Finance and Policy Committee. Anderson said he is especially pleased the $139 million bill (SSHF8) includes $6 million for biofuel infrastructure grants to help facilitate the equipment upgrades necessary to handle the E15 blend of fuel. Retail and distributors of petroleum products will be able to apply for the grants to install new tanks and pumps that are compatible with up to E25 blends.

“This funding will be helpful to building out our infrastructure for expanded use of biofuels,” Anderson said. “We hear a lot about using more electric cars to improve air quality in the future, but biofuels can have a much more immediate impact and this appropriation to aid

The agriculture bill also appropriates $2.9 million to supplement the Agricultural Best Management Practices Loan program, which helps farmers implement practices on their land to improve soil and water quality.

Another $1.2 million is provided for capital equipment replacement in the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s plant protection and disease management labs.

Funding also is featured for mental health specialists, farm safety grants, livestock processing and meat science, Second Harvest Heartland food banks, urban and youth agriculture grants, and farm-to-school programs.

A measure in the bill also continues biennial base spending of $700,000 for the Office of Broadband to help facilitate the appropriation of federal funds provided to expand broadband infrastructure to underserved and unserved portions of Minnesota.

Swanville City • May 4, 2021 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, May 4, 2021.

The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: John Dragseth, Norm Carlson, Sandy Lange, Tony Maciej and Jim Molitor. Also present: Amy VanKeuren and reporter Tyler Ohmann.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, April 6, 2021 was reviewed. A motion was made by Tony Maciej to approve the minutes. John Dragseth seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made

by Norm Carlson and seconded by John Dragseth to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Amy Van Keuren, Swanville/Upsala Senior Housing Director for Horizon Health was present to explain the different areas for Horizon Health. Amy also stated she has applied for a grant to add a possible lift and a community room onto the Swanville Apartment Building. Mayor Lange said there is $25,000.00 in DEEDS money the City could loan for this project. Amy will get back to the council on the DEEDS money loan.

Randy Drayna would like a land use permit to add a driveway and with a culvert on his property. Norm Carlson made a motion to give Drayna the land use permit.

Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Drayna has also been working with the DNR on putting in a wildlife pond on his land in Forrest Hill Lane. As long as Drayna follows the DNR requirements council was good with the project.

John Hoogenhaus would like a land use permit to ad onto his existing garage a 26’x25’ addition to the south. City maintenance man Lonny has measured the addition dimension for all the set backs and they are in compliance with the boundaries. Tony Maciej made a motion to give Hoogenhaus the 26’x25’ addition land use permit. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Clif Allen, City Engineer with Moore Engineering, would like to have a public hearing at 6:45 pm on June 8, 2021 before the regular monthly city council meeting.

This meeting is a required hearing to inform the public of the water improvements and the loan that will be applied for from Rural Water Development. The meeting is so set.

The residential parking ordinance within the city limits was discussed and will revisited next month at the council meeting.

An air exchanger was discussed for the Swanville Center. It was decided to have one installed if it can be done for under $2500.00 and be installed by the carnival.

Mayor Lange presented resolution #21-0504, accepting the donation of $8000.00 from the Swanville Lions Club to the Water Trail Improvements. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve resolution #21-0504. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Clean-up Day in Swanville is set for Saturday, May 15 from 9am-11am. The event will take place in front of the city park.

The following claims were presented for payment.

Members of the council were furnished with a listing.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, June 8, 2021 with the Public Hearing taking place at 6:45 pm.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the May 3, 2021 minutes to the board. Ray made a motion to approve the minutes. Mike made the second. All in favor, Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for May. Claims list included claims 3576-3586 for a total of $24,223.33, this includes the insurance claim and most of the dust control. Ray made the motion to pay the claims, Mike made the second. All in favor, Motion carried. Mail included MN Township Assoc. cards, P&Z letter, land stewardship letter, and a Technology Exchange newsletter. Ron received a call about extending a culvert on Arden Dr., Board was OK with property owner extending the culvert.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray and Ron each had a tree to move off the roadway. Midwest Asphalt should be starting crack filling soon, Erv will continue dust control on some hills and access to intersection spots. A request for tar on a dead end road was received, thought about tying in with the City project. Board members felt the road was not wide enough and did not serve enough people for the Township to spend the money. The property owner could have the road tarred at his own expense. Mileage Certification was presented and signed at 31.850 miles of roadway for the Township. Ray made a motion to accept the quote for ditch mowing as it has always been done well in the past. Mike made the second. All in favor, motion carried.

Additional agenda item: The clerk reviewed the American Rescue Plan as not much information is out yet, Board members should check the Township Association for upcoming trainings.

A question was received about campaign signs – if they are on private property the Township has no authority.

Change of meeting dates were discussed and decided the July meeting will be July 6 and the September meeting will move to September 7.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 8:55 pm.

Months of planning and then, it was all done.

My youngest son was married! Last Monday my wife, Lori, and her sister went shopping and bought enough food for the groom’s dinner. Thursday, they cleaned and prepared the food and on Friday the two of them drove to Detroit Lakes and prepared a very delicious meal for 40 people. Saturday had lots of preparations all its own with a 4 PM wedding on hole 7 of a very beautiful golf course. There were friends and relatives from both sides in attendance and it was a great day.

Crash: June 19, 2021: At approx. 12:55 pm received a report of a one vehicle crash near Highway 238 and 415th Street in Krain Township. The caller reported that the occupant of the vehicle had injuries to his wrist and back pain.

Upon arrival, responders found the driver, Jerome Klein, 69, of St. Joseph, was responsive.

Klein told deputies that he had swerved to miss a deer and hit a field approach. His vehicle became airborne and landed in a nearby field. Klein was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash. He was transported to the Melrose Hospital for further treatment.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Freeport Fire and Rescue and Melrose Ambulance.

Dear Motor Medics, There’s smoke coming from near my steering wheel at times right out of the column. It’s not a lot of smoke but I can see it and smell it and it scares me. All my vehicle systems seem to be working fine now but a few months ago my turn signals were acting up. The car is a 2001 Buick Regal. Is this something I should be concerned about or can I let it go?

-Robert in Sheldon, Iowa Dear Robert, Your car is smoking... There is no way we would let that go without a thorough check out for safety. Without seeing the car hands-on it’s hard to say but we have seen smoke generated in this way due to failing turn signal switches.

The switch can fail simply because it is old or it can be stressed by things like shorted wiring, failed bulbs or adding an extra load to the system such as a trailer which has an added load of extra lighting that has to be carried by the cars wiring. The first step will be verifying where the smoke is coming from. That will require someone experienced with the system to open it up and inspect the parts. If any parts are found to be burnt they will need to be repaired then the rest of the effected system will need to be diagnosed to make sure that what caused the first failure does not happen again.

Dear Motor Medics, I listen to your Under The Hood radio show here in Branson almost every week and you guys have some of the most useful car advice I have ever found, and it’s free which is the best kind in my book. I read your column each week too and a while back you had talked about a reader’s car that had a fueling issue.

When the car was being filled with gasoline it would not fill quickly, it would fill for a few seconds then click off the pump and it would do this over and over again. My 2008 Impala is doing this now. What was it and could it be -Doug in Branson, Missouri Dear Doug, It is common on many cars especially GM cars and trucks to have this happen and it is often caused by a failure in what is called the evaporative emissions system. The fuel system is a closed system which prevents fuel from evaporating into the atmosphere which would cause pollution and also be a waste of your money as your fuel would simply disappear over time. The system does need to vent at times for things like filling the tank and also when fuel is being consumed by the engine or it would back up like yours does. Also, in the case of the engine using fuel the tank would eventually collapse. This is just one possible problem.

In Minnesota, there are about a dozen different types of ticks. Not all of them spread disease. Three types that people may come across in Minnesota are the blacklegged tick (aka deer tick), the American dog tick (aka wood tick), and the lone star tick. The blacklegged tick causes by far the most tickborne disease in Minnesota. People in Minnesota are often bitten by American dog ticks but they rarely spread diseases. American dog ticks may spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia. Lone star ticks are rarely found in Minnesota, but can spread diseases such as ehrlichiosis and tularemia.

Check frequently for ticks - at least once a day.

• Ticks must remain attached for one to two days before they can transmit the Lyme disease bacteria.

• Bathe or shower after coming indoors to wash off and more easily find ticks that may be crawling on or attached to you.

• Search your entire body closely, especially hard-to-see areas (e.g. behind knees,

groin area, and arm pits).

• Ticks may look like a speck of dirt or freckle on skin so use a parent or a mirror to help you.

• If you find a tick on yourself, remove the tick as soon as possible.

- Use a pair of tweezers or your fingers to grasp the tick by the head, close to the skin.

- Pull the tick outward slowly, gently, and steadily - Clean the area with soap and water.

- Avoid folk remedies like Vaseline®, nail polish remover or burning matches - they are not a safe or effective way to remove ticks.
