The best time to start anew is now -By Harvey Mackay In 1914 Thomas Edison’s factory in West Orange, N.J., was destroyed by a fire.

Much of Edison’s life work went up in flames. At the height of the fire, Edison’s 24-year-old son, Charles, searched frantically for his father. He finally found him, calmly watching the fire, his face glowing in the reflection, his white hair blowing in the wind.

Charles’ heart ached for him. Edison was 67 at the time, and everything was gone. When he saw his son, he shouted, “Charles, where’s your mother?” Then he said, “Find her. Bring her here. She will never see anything like this as long as she lives.”

The next morning, Edison looked at the ruins and said, “There is great value in disaster.

All our mistakes are burned up. Thank God we can start anew.”

Leaders always look for the positive, even in the direst of circumstances. This story from “Bits & Pieces” about the inventor is a prime example.

As daunting as it may seem, you can start anew. There doesn’t have to be a fire and it doesn’t have to be the beginning of a new year.

Think about what you really want. Some things are hard to let go of, to leave behind. But letting go need not be the end of the world. Think of it instead as an opportunity you can’t pass up.

Author Marsha Petrie Sue said: “Every day is a new beginning. Treat it that way. Stay away from what might have been and look at what can be.”

The world is full of people who changed their lives or jumped to a new career and started anew.

Reid Hoffman began his professional life in academia, but soon caught the entrepreneurship

bug. After working for Apple in the ’90s and attempting to set up social networking for the company, he formed another social networking platform called SocialNet in 1997. After that company went bankrupt, he applied all his knowledge to what became the world's premier platform for career networking: LinkedIn. Brad Pitt at one time chauffeured strippers to and from bachelor parties. He also worked as a furniture mover and dressed up as a giant chicken mascot for the restaurant chain El Pollo Loco. He enrolled in acting classes with the dream of an acting career. Within seven months, he signed with an agent and today is one of the most famous and recognizable superstars in the world.

Pope Francis went from being a bouncer at a Buenos Aires nightclub and working as a janitor during the day – to becoming Pontiff (with a few stops in between.) He proved that taking big leaps, even unusual or almost impossible ones, are worth taking.

The husband-and-wife team of Tim and Nina Zagat behind the popular dining surveys of the same name were corporate lawyers when they first started printing their restaurant guides.

The guides became so popular that the 51-yearold Tim left his job as corporate counsel for Gulf & Western Industries to manage the business in 1986. Nina left corporate law to work on the dining surveys as well.

Mick Jagger, lead singer for The Rolling Stones, worked at Bexley Psychiatric Hospital as a porter to pay for his education at the London School of Economics. He dreamed of being a journalist until he found joy in playing in a band.

Dan Home Improvement Centers when he was fired in 1978. I learned in interviewing Bernie for my book “We Got Fired! … And It’s the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Us” that the following year he and Arthur Blank decided to open a huge home-improvement store called Home Depot. Today, Home Depot is the largest home-improvement retailer with more than 2,300 stores.

Lady Gaga dropped out of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts to pursue her music career. The major label Def Jam Recordings let her go after only three months, requiring her to start all over again. The rest is history.

Whitney Wolfe Herd was co-founder and vice president of marketing for the dating app company Tinder when she was forced to leave the company after filing a sexual harassment lawsuit against her boss. Herd moved on and created Bumble, which allows women to make the first move in matchmaking. Today Bumble has more than 35 million users.

From inauspicious beginnings to dreams come true, these stories are repeated every day all over the world. There’s no reason why the next big story can’t be about you.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne

knew that some afternoon soon, you would be heading to the field with gloves and a corn knife. Whether cut or pulled, these weeds were unacceptable.

Mother's Day and Father's Day were observed in different ways. Mother's Day requires a need to be observed. Cards, gifts and special dear words were needed. When Grandmother was able, the kids came home for a Mother's Day dinner. Father's Day involved a “Happy Father's Day” and a greeting card.

The rest of the day was very similar to any other Sunday.

Mothers were typically involved more closely to the family in the children's younger years, whereas Father was more involved with the financial needs of the family. Fathers are frequently involved with things that are outside of the home. For the male children growing older, they begin to spend more time with Father, whether it be by accomplishing duties, hunting, fishing or going to a ball game.

The Father is loved and appreciated by their sons, but not by being as emotionally involved as with their daughters.

Father's Day

Father's Day was here again. For those of us that are older, we think back to our fathers and grandfathers that are no longer with us. In many cases, unless we were working with them on specific duties, they were out fixing fence, cleaning the barn or other duties that needed to get done. It also was apparent that these duties needed to be done so that the economic needs of the family and the farm could be satisfied.

In my case, I was able to spend more time with my Grandfather, which gave me the opportunity to learn about the duties of a blacksmith and some of the thinking which he brought along from the “old country.” As I look back, he built his life around his idea of right and wrong and that there were not a lot of variations from those ideas. He didn't argue with others about those ideas, since they were just the way life should be lived and to think differently didn't make sense. It was comfortable to find myself in that surrounding, knowing what if I was in that protected area, life was comfortable and hassle-free. He didn't spend time arguing a subject, since it probably would be done in the English language and he could speak German better. I think he probably found it easier to think in German.

My Dad was a farmer, very dedicated to making the home farm successful. After his retirement, he made an effort to continue to be physically active. He kept his garden as close to perfect as possible. He and my Mother walked a couple of miles whenever possible.

He continued to heat with wood and looked forward to cutting, splitting and stacking firewood. While farming he took a lot of pride in his crops and dairy herd. A pleasant break from the regular farm workday was to take a ride in the pickup in the afternoon to see how the corn was growing on the other end of the farm and if there were thistles or mustard appearing on any fields along the way, you

I have been a believer in Jesus Christ for quit some time. I have also been in church leadership, Christian camp work, and pastoral roles for many years. This article is primarily just for those who would say, “I know for certain that I am going to heaven when I die.”

I started reading a book titled “The Grace Awakening” by Chuck Swindoll and he says some things in there that are direct and to the point. Grace is unmerited favor… Something we don’t deserve. Most of us know that we are doomed for hell unless we humbly come to Jesus and confess our sins and invite Him as Lord of our lives. So, if Jesus can forgive us, then we need to extend the same grace to others.

I want to quote just a small portion of this book that will make you all think. “Grace killers’ are everywhere! We find them where we work. In our neighborhoods. Maybe in our own homes. And sadly, even in our churches. We’re surrounded by people who criticize, condemn, and crush any hope of joyful living. And as Chuck Swindoll boldly points out, many of the very people who should be spreading the gospel of grace have instead become self-righteous bullies and self-appointed judges.”

These articles are intended to uplift and encourage. This one may be a bit different.

My hope is that when reading this you do not have “flashbacks” of other Christians hurting you emotionally. My intent is however to encourage you to ask the same question as the

Kenneth J. Lawinger

Kenneth J. “Ken” Lawinger, age 84 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at the Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, June 24 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. David Flanagan officiating, Rev. Greg Paffel and Rev. Tim Wenzel concelebrating with Deacon Larry Lawinger assisting. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Parish prayers will be at 5:30 p.m.

Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Kenneth John Lawinger was born June 25, 1937 in Mineral Point, Wisconsin to William and Mary (Kieffer) Lawinger. He was the youngest of eight children, three boys and five girls. Ken met the love his life, Mary Wilcox, in Dodgeville, Wisconsin. The couple was united in marriage on February 3, 1958 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mineral Point, Wisconsin and together had nine children.

Ken was employed by Wisconsin Feeder Pig and later purchased his own livestock company, Northern States Feeder Pig. He was involved in his community where he served on the city council. Ken was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre where he served as a board member, served on the church council and board of directors, and was a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and also served on the board at Holy Family School. Ken loved to play cards, fishing, and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Lawinger of Sauk Centre; children, Larry (JoAnn) Lawinger of Maple Grove, Tim (Patty) Lawinger of Sauk Centre, Jim (Ainslie) Lawinger of Ambia, Indiana, Debi (Chuck) Reynolds of Sauk Centre, Andy (Karla) Lawinger of Oakdale, Geri (Tom) Swanson of St. Cloud, Alan (Cheryl) Lawinger of Sauk Centre, Chris (Lisa) Lawinger of Sauk Centre, and Jean (Todd) Marthaler of Sauk Centre; 26 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren; sister, Joan Grimm of Mineral Point, Wisconsin; and sister-in-law, Helen Regan of Mineral Point.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Helen Flanagan, Eleanor Joestgen, Alice Hartung, Bill Lawinger, Agnes Knudson, and Bob Lawinger.

Serving as casket bearers will be Tim Lawinger, Jim Lawinger, Andy Lawinger, Alan Lawinger, Chris Lawinger, and Ken Reynolds.

Cross bearer will be Jean Marthaler, scripture bearer will be Geri Swanson, and rosary bearer will be Debi Reynolds.

Memorials are preferred to Holy Family School.

Joan Ann Sunder

Joan Ann Sunder, age 73 of Albany passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on June 14, 2022. Mass of Christian Burial will held Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Church of All Saints-Saint Mary, Holdingford.

Joan was born on July 16, 1948, in St. Cloud, MN to Peter F. and Frances (Sobania) Pyka. She married Jerome “Jerry” Sunder on June 17, 1967, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Opole. Joan was a homemaker who enjoyed camping, fishing, her dogs, and her 30 peacocks. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Grace M. “Babs” Solarz

Grace M. “Babs” Solarz, age 86 of Albany passed away peacefully with her family at her side on June 19, 2022 at Edenbrook Nursing Home in St. Cloud. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 23 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany.

Pastor Anthony Christoffels will officiate. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 23 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Albany. Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, Minnesota.

Known as “Babs” by her sibling and friends, Grace was born June 17, 1936 to Theodore “Ted” and Grace (Christen) Lemke in Farming Township.

She attended a Lutheran country school near her home through eighth grade. On June 26, 1954 she married Felix Solarz at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Farming Township. Grace was a homemaker. She spent many hours each year canning and freezing produce from her large garden. Grace had a talent for baking homemade cakes and decorating them for special occasions such as birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. Grace also taught herself how to crochet. She made many beautiful afghans as well as Christmas tree skirts for each of her children, and a baptismal shawl which was worn by her great-grandchildren.

Grace will lovingly be remembered by her daughters, Ginelle “Nellie” (Arvin) Richter of Albany, Rachelle “Bery” (Vern) Voss of St. Joseph; son, Russell (Debra) Solarz of Albany, 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 greatgreat grandsons; sisters-in-law, Rita Solarz, Karen Solarz; brothers-in-law, Clem (Gail) Solarz.

By Nancy Leasman Long Prairie, a community of about 3500 residents, has been fortunate to host a chamber orchestra in a continuous run of nearly 50 years. While the Covid challenges of the last two years have caused more interruptions than any other events during the history of the orchestra, the group endures.

It continues to fulfill its mission “to provide engaging programming of orchestral music for the enrichment and enjoyment of our performers and audience.” While retaining its name of the Long Prairie Chamber Orchestra and known as the LPCO, it draws on talent and experience from the surrounding communities.

The LPCO was formed in 1974 in celebration of the United States Bicentennial.

Orvis Dahlen, who taught instrumental music in the Long Prairie Schools, along with his wife Reta, and friends Lowell and Janet Klukken, organized the first performance which was held at the Long Prairie Armory.

In the early years, the orchestra performed at the Long Prairie Arts Center and at the historic Christie House. When the new Long Prairie/Grey Eagle High School and auditorium was built about 20 years ago, the LPCO acquired a new practice and performance venue.

As a non-profit arts organization, the LPCO has benefited from grant support from the Five Wings Arts Council. This support has been a boon and confidence builder for the seven orchestra directors who have led the musicians.

In his illustrious career, current director Mark Graf has garnered a wealth of musical practice which he has offered to central Minnesota musicians for the last eight years.

Graf earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a Master of Music in Vocal Coaching and Accompanying from the University of Illinois. He has conducted opera productions in Florida, Ohio, Kansas, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, Delaware, District of Columbia, Louisiana, New York, and Alberta, Canada.

Graf began his music career as many do, in the fifth grade. He recalls a photo of him when he was quite small, seated at the piano with a recorder in one hand. He focused on the piano and then moved in the direction of opera.

He was the resident associate conductor and director of the young artist studio for the Florida Grand Opera, adjudicator for Metropolitan Opera auditions, and music coordi-

nator and rehearsal pianist for the Pittsburgh Opera.

In addition to his Long Prairie assignment, Graf is currently the Music Director of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Alexandria.

He has led several Alexandria Area Arts Association’s Andria Theatre productions, including: Into the Woods, White Christmas, Willie Wonka, Wizard of Oz, and Hello Dolly!

Graf doesn’t remember exactly how he came to lead the LPCO. It may have been through the Heartland Symphony of Brainerd. Some of the LPCO musicians also played with the Heartland Symphony which Graf directed for a time.

Having made the decision to leave the direction of the LPCO to the next generation, Graf is pleased that his final concert was an all-opera program. Singers from Concordia College in Moorhead were invited to perform arias and ensembles along with the orchestra on April 9. “I didn’t really plan for my last gig to be an all opera program but with my background in opera, I’m happy it turned out that way.”

“I’m stepping back, seeing what will happen,” Graf said. He may spend more time, “making junk out of junk,” his humble way of saying he likes using reclaimed wood for repurposed projects.

LPCO board member Jim Downes appreciates that Graf’s organizational skills will leave the orchestra in good shape for his successor. “He’s done so much planning.

He’s dedicated to music and wants to share music. He’s been a wonderful manager, shares his thoughts and invites ideas.”

Part of the business of leading an orchestra is empowering the support cast and key positions within it that keep things running smoothly in its day to day operations, as well as providing consistency when leadership changes.

Erika and Ben Angell are happy to announce the birth of their son, David Benjamin Angell, born June 7 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

He weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces. and measured 21 inches long.

sponsible for dictating bowings to the first violin section, playing solo passages, understanding the conductor’s ideas and communicating them in technical terms to the rest of the orchestra, leading the orchestra in tuning before rehearsals and performances, and assisting with aspects of the orchestra’s management. While conductors may come and go—with differing styles and approaches—the concertmaster provides the orchestra with consistent and technically oriented leadership. Jessica joined the orchestra through her grandmother, Teri Petron, who also played the violin.

Chris Hebert has played the flute with the LPCO since 1994. She served on the LPCO board as the secretary in 2016, and as the board president since 2018. She is also the orchestra librarian. In this capacity she provides and organizes all of the music needed for performances and maintains and curates the library of parts and scores.

“When I started teaching at St. Mary’s School in Long Prairie, Teri Petron asked me if I played an instrument. She grabbed me for the orchestra,” Hebert said, and she has played the flute in the orchestra since that time. “The LPCO played for my wedding,” she added.

Hebert appreciates the leadership Graf has provided for the orchestra. “He knows our group so well and he knows what we are capable of playing. He brings out our musicality. We all have day jobs,” she said, knowing that directing a community orchestra is a different challenge than working with professional musicians. “He doesn’t flaunt his experience. He has a great sense of humor and keeps pushing us and wanting us to do better. He also shakes everyone’s hand and thanks each musician after a performance.”

Graf acknowledges that working with a group comprised of musicians of all skill levels and ages (14-80) is an unique experience but it boils down to just making music together.

“I like getting to know people in a group and watching them come together. It was a great experience. A good run.”

Other people involved in the organizational parts of the LPCO include a few non-musicians.

Carol Duke is the operations manager and has been on the LPCO board for 5 years. She relishes her job of planning and decorating for the events, and meeting the orchestra’s many patrons.

Luan Thomas-Brunkhorst, who has been on the LPCO board for more than a decade, wears many hats. She is the publicity and volunteer coordinator, grant reviewer and Facebook administrator. Her husband Jurgen is a musician as well as the organization’s treasurer and website administrator.

Pat Makepeace is the secretary for the LPCO board and works with fundraising.

Gary Taylor, a musician, and Jim Downes, who photographs many of the orchestra’s events, are at-large board members.

Downes, who connected with Graf because of shared ancestral lands and language, praised Graf for his musical talent, organizational skills, dedication to music, and desire to share music. “He knows a lot of musicians and found fill-ins for gaps in the orchestra. He’s a wonderful manager, shares his thoughts and invites others to express their ideas.”

Graf said his ace-in-the-hole, when it came to connections with outside musicians, was his son, Eric. Eric is a cellist and knows younger players through the University of Minnesota. Eric has been a featured soloist for the LPCO as have his peers who have accepted invitations to perform.

“We’re always making music together,” Graf said of time spent with Eric. He practices what he preaches. “I’d encourage anyone in the community, if they play an instrument, to take it up again and play with a group. All a group really wants to do is make music and have fun.”

The Long Prairie Chamber Orchestra believes in engaging with the communities in the area and embracing the

talents of aspiring instrumental artists of all ages. The LPCO continues to work toward its goal to offer audiences a chance to experience a variety of orchestral music performances.

Dear Motor Medics, We have a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe and when it was just a year old, we got a new puppy. The first time we left it alone while we went inside a restaurant to eat, she decided to eat the Tahoe. She chewed the back of the rear seat and the corner off of the plastic trim too.

The vehicle is in great shape with 70,000 miles and we want to sell it, but with a large hole in the seat and the damage to the plastic side trim it’s making the sale very difficult. We checked with the dealer and they are telling us they can repair it at a cost of over $3500.00 parts and labor and our insurance will not cover repairs.

Can you suggest anything that we can do in the way of a repair to save some money?

What’s wrong with a seat and trim from another Tahoe of the same year that has no damage?

Look into certified used parts. Ask your dealer if they can find these parts so you can get a repair that makes more financial sense. With the hundreds of reliable used parts sources in the country they should be able to find a match for a late model vehicle like yours and make the repair affordable. There is always a way.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, We have a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe that has been having the check brake light come on periodically. The fluid tank slowly drains so we fill the brake fluid and it works fine for a while then comes on again. We had a mechanic

look at it and tell us we would have to replace the HCU in the brake system and that the part alone is about $1600.00. Is this a common problem and does this sound reasonable? Is there anything else we can do? I'm a little hesitant to spend so much on a repair on a 10-yearold vehicle, when the value is maybe a little more than twice the cost to repair the problem.

-Kay in Nebraska Dear Kay, The HCU is the Hydraulic Control Unit and it’s the main component of the antilock brake system. The units don’t tend to leak fluid but rather fail electrically so I would take a very close look at the lines going to the unit which are more common to fail. Shop around for brakes. A second opinion never hurts if you have any question and by asking us, we assume that you do. When you have an older vehicle or any vehicle for that matter it is important to keep repairs economical but it’s also important to be safe. Brakes are not an area to cut corners on but there are always ways to save money when repairing them.

Grey Eagle Township • June 6, 2022 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, Mike Rohe, and Erv Herdering.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda.

Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for May. Claims list included claims 3689-3697 for a total of $17,168.97 Mike made the motion to pay the claims. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried. Mail included a letter about replacing the water meter and the updated population count. Ron had a survey request from the US Census Bureau and a letter from SWCD about the Todd County tour. Mary Ann presented a CD that was up for renewal. Mike made a motion to renew, Ron made the second. Motion carried. Financial report was reviewed and approved on a motion by Ray and a second by Mike. All in favor.

Road and Bridge Report: Mary Ann reported on the Preliminary Damage Assessment meeting from the May 12 storm. Reviewed the quote for ditch mowing from Lee Buchholz for $85.00 per hour, plus fuel surcharge. Mike made the motion to accept the bid, second by Ray, motion carried. Road mileage certificate was signed by the chairman. Discussion on the brush cutting and high cost of fuel this year. Ron suggested maybe to wait. Another option would be to spray some of the bad areas. Ray will check with the sprayer on the cost and report at the next meeting.

Additional agenda item: Quote from Hinman Lawn Service was reviewed and Ron made a motion to approve at $45.00 per mowing and $200.00 for putting in and removing the dock. Mike made the second, all in favor, motion carried. July meeting will be held July 11, 2022.

June 6, 2022: Deputy Adam Jensen responded to a theft from vehicle complaint in Sauk Centre Twp. The caller reported that a trailer he owns had been broken into. The lock was cut, and a Honda generator and a Milwaukee cordless impact wrench had been taken. The owner did have a serial number for the wrench, so we can at least get that entered as stolen. Always a good idea to photograph and write down serial numbers just in case.

Scams: We have talked about various types of scams. One of those types is the “Grandchild in Trouble” scam. Like a bad penny, it keeps turning up. Deputy Andrew Troen took a fraud call on June 10 involving this type of scam. The grandparent had been contacted by their “grandchild” who was in trouble and needed bail money. $9500.00 was sent via overnight delivery to a location in Massachusetts. By the time Deputy Troen was called and tracked the number down the package had been delivered. Follow up will continue, but recovery is doubtful. Remember folks, no matter what the caller says, always verify.

June 12, 2022: Deputy Aaron Wells took a theft complaint. Sometime over the preceding week someone had broken into several storage sheds in the City of Freeport.

Some of the units were accessed from the exterior and some by breaking through adjoining walls. Among numerous items taken were 5 firearms. If you have any information on this burglary, please call our office at 259-3702.

June 16, 2022: Deputy Steve Romstad responded to a theft complaint in Sauk Centre Twp. The caller was reporting that some water quality monitoring equipment had been taken from the location that it had been placed. The caller also said that they had experienced a similar theft of items that was reported to the Sauk Centre Police Department, several weeks ago. The items were a Campbell SEI data logger, value $2500.00, a solar panel, battery and mount used to power the data logger. The site is only visited every two weeks, so no idea on the exact date of the theft.
