Cultivate creativity to grow success -By Harvey Mackay

Paul was majoring in zoology at college. One semester he took a course in the study of birds -ornithology. For the final exam, Paul studied until he had the textbook nearly memorized. He knew his class notes backward and forward. He was eager to take the exam, certain of getting a good grade.

The morning of the exam, Paul took a seat in the front row of the big auditorium where the class was held. Over 100 students were in the class with him.

On a table at the front was a row of 10 stuffed birds, each one with a sack covering its body so that only the legs were visible.

The professor announced, “For this test, which counts for 80 percent of your final grade, I want you to identify each bird up here by its legs, and then discuss its species, natural habitat, and mating patterns. You may begin.”

Paul stared at the birds. All the legs looked the same to him. After spending half the exam period in growing frustration as he tried to determine which bird was which, he picked up his exam and threw it on the professor’s desk.

“This is ridiculous!” he shouted.

The professor picked up the exam booklet and saw that it was blank.

“What’s your name, young man?”

With that, Paul yanked one leg of his pants up. “Why don’t you tell me?”

Paul’s response probably didn’t earn him a passing grade, although I must admit, I admire his creativity!

“Creativity is a great motivator because it makes people interested in what they are doing. Creativity gives hope that there can be a worthwhile idea,” said English psychologist Edward de Bono. “Creativity gives the possibility of some sort of achievement to everyone. Creativity makes life more interesting.”

Everyone is born with the ability to be creative, but some people seem to lose it as they grow older, whereas others are better at accessing their creativity throughout their lives. Studies show that there is no correlation between IQ and creativity.

Here’s how to regain or retain your creative spark: • Be aware of what’s going on around you. A scientist needs to analyze all available facts and every bit of research. Stay on top of current business trends. Learn from other people’s ideas and mistakes.

• Explore. Examine all of your options and alternatives, no matter how far-fetched they may seem at first. Don’t rule anything out as you look for solutions and new approaches.

• Be courageous. You’ve got to be fearless and not worry about what others

may think. Don’t try to be like everyone else. Take your own approach, whatever you’re doing. Prepare to accept some criticism but don’t take it personally.

• Rely on your instincts. As you assimilate the information around you and assess the possibilities, factor in your instincts to come up with creative solutions. As legendary film director Frank Capra said, “A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something.”

• Assess your options. Sort your ideas into categories, and rank them.

Try combining ideas, and eliminate any that don’t fit what you’re looking for.

• Be realistic. Step back and evaluate how your idea or solution is likely to play out in the real world. Look at the upside, but consider the downside as well. Not all great ideas will work, but they may lead to other solutions.

• Stick with it. You need to be persistent if you want to achieve anything significant. A novel takes a long time to write; a successful business may take years to build. Keep a detailed picture of the intended result in your mind to help you stay focused and move forward.

• Be patient. You can’t hurry creativity, so take time to ponder your ideas. Sit back and take time to think things over.

That’s usually how the best ideas bloom.

• Evaluate the results. At the end of the process, ask yourself: Has my vision been realized? Learn from what works and what fails so you can move on to your next project.

• Creativity isn’t just a process. It’s a value. If you value success, get creative!

Obituaries Elsie Hellermann

E l s i e Hellermann, age 93, of Melrose, died Friday, June 17, 2011 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 21 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating and Rev. Art Hoppe concelebrating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Elsie Hellermann was born September 18, 1917 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Henry and Agnes (Pohlmann) Hinnenkamp. On May 11, 1938 she married Herman Hellermann in Melrose. Elsie was a homemaker all her life. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, canning, quilting, baking, cooking, and making braided rugs.

Elsie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, St. Elizabeth’s Society, Melrose Hospital Auxiliary, Melrose Historical Society, and was secretary and treasurer of St. Mary’s School Endowment Fund.

Survivors include her children, Florence (Victor) Middendorf of St. Rosa, Inez Ruegemer of Park Rapids, Janet (Aloys) Fuechtmann of New Munich, Mike (Jean)

Jeremy Pazik Hellermann of Melrose, Rose Ann (Ralph) Inderrieden of Melrose, Mark (Diane) Hellermann of Melrose, Maggie (John) Kraker of Alexandria, and JoAnn (Gerald) Boeckermann of St. Rosa; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Marie Primus of Melrose; and sisters-in-law, Agnes Hinnenkamp of Melrose, Frieda Hollermann of Albany, Julia Hollermann of Long Prairie, and Hilda Theiler of Melrose.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman on February 2, 1997; grandson, Robert Hellermann; brothers, Leo, Boniface, and Norbert Hinnenkamp; and sister, Loretta Mehr.

Serving as casket bearers were Tom Fuechtmann, Jim Hellermann, Ron Hellermann, Andy Hellermann, Matt Hellermann, Dave Boeckermann, Mike Boeckermann, and Travis Kraker. Cross bearer was Vern Middendorf and scripture bearer was Nancy Duevel. Gift bearers were Becky Kraker and Jan Hiltner. Reader was Steve Fuechtmann and Vern Middendorf read the petitions. Eulogy was read by Amy Schaefer. Honorary bearers were Clarence & Mary Ann Wenker, Elmer & Annie Hellermann, Kitty Mueller, Betty Lou Dickinson, Dorine Terres, Shirley Fuchs, Antonia Gomez, Colette Von Wahlde, Clarey & Lucille Raeker, and Jim & Ruth Ann Gieske.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Jeremy Pazik, age 35, passed away Friday, June 17, 2011, at his parents home in Upsala, MN surrounded by his family after a 10 month battle with bile-duct cancer (Cholangiocarsinoma).

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Gethesmane Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN; Pastor Trish Jorgenson, officiated.

Jeremy was born on December 12, 1975 at Long Prairie Memorial Hospital, Long Prairie, MN to Mike and Gloria Pazik. He was a member of Gethesmane Lutheran Church, Upsala, MN. He graduated from Upsala Area High School in 1994. He was employed at HDL in Sauk Rapids, MN and before that, MCI in Waite Park, MN. Jeremy was a true Vikings and Twins fan, win or lose. He loved playing softball, camping, the color blue, and spending time with his family and friends. He cared deeply for his nieces and nephews. Jeremy was a very caring and

Delila “Dee” Loven

Delila “Dee” Loven, 90 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Friday June 17, 2011 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls. Funeral Services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at the Swanville Bible Church in Swanville with Pastor Roland Jennings officiating. Burial was at Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville.

Dee was born Delila Rue Johnson on August 28, 1920, at a farmhouse in Clarissa, Minnesota to Louis and Ora (Sarff) Johnson. Dee grew up the youngest of four siblings and attended school in Clarissa, graduating with the class of 1937.

After graduation she worked as a waitress and cashier in a restaurant in Brainerd, Minnesota. In 1941, at the invitation of her brothers, Dee moved to Seattle, Washington to work as a book keeper at the Seattle Ship Yards. She also worked as a manager of the Nifty Café in downtown Seattle. On May 2, 1943, Dee married Raymond K. Loven on the First Congregational Church in Seattle. Because of the abundance of jobs during the war, Ray and Dee rented a large home, and invited many of their friends

and relatives from Minnesota to come and live with them. In 1945 they moved back to Swanville where Dee and Ray owned and operated Loven’s Service and raised their two children. In their earlier years, Ray and Dee enjoyed traveling throughout the country and camping in their camping box. Dee was the ultimate sports fan and loved watching the Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and Timber wolves. She also looked forward to playing cards with her “card club”, bowling and an occasional trip to the casino. But her ultimate love in life was being around her family and friends.

She relished the time that she spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Delila is survived by her husband of 69 years, Ray Loven of Swanville, MN; son, Royal (Sandee) Loven of Swanville, MN; daughter, Amber Brown of Swanville, MN; grandchildren; Kyle (Kari) Loven of Rogers, MN, Jay (HeidiJo) Loven, of Swanville, MN, Michelle (Doug) Dahlberg of Little Falls, MN, Stephanie (Rob) Fritz of St. Louis Park, MN and Matthew (Anne) Brown of Plymouth, MN; 13 greatgrandchildren.

Dee was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Ora Johnson; brothers, Laurel and Stan Johnson; sister, Joyce Umland.

A Memorial Mass was held Monday, June 20, 2011 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon, for Leander Buettner, age 87, of Avon, who died on Friday, June 17, 2011 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

Rev. Blane Wasnie, OSB officiated.

Inurnment followed in the parish cemetery.

Leander Buettner was born January 28, 1924 in Bluegrass, Minnesota the son of John and Rose (Sand) Buettner. He was united in marriage with Angeline Gallus on June 20, 1950 in Opole, Minnesota.

Leander owned and operated Buettner’s Mobil Service in Avon from 1961 until 2005. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. In his free time, Leander

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday June 20, 2011 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie for Raymond F. Timmer, age 89, who died Friday, June 17, 2011 at the Long Prairie Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Richard Walz officiated and burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Ray was born in Freeport to John & Ida (Schweiters) Timmer. He grew up on the family farm near St. Anthony in Stearns County. He married Roma Jean Spieker on August 28, 1950 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie. Ray was a livestock dealer through

When friends introduce their pets by posting pictures and/or telling their pets’ stories, a collective energy emerges. Within seconds, others write comments such as, “Your dog is beautiful!”

Or, “You and your cat are both so lucky to have found each other.” This brings happiness and relief to all the people who are sharing. They no longer feel alone; they have a safe, longed-for place in which to communicate. I guess that’s what a community is all about.

When I wrote, “On Father’s Day my husband, Bob, gets presents ‘from’ the animals,” I added, “Gracie gingerly takes her toy out of the box, then scrams outside to our fenced-in yard and hides it. We never see her toys again.”

That opened the door for my friend, Georgia, to write: “My dog, Bobble, used to steal my son’s spoons (and ONLY his spoons) and do the same thing Gracie did. I never understood why I kept having to go back to the store and buy more. That is until after one really strong summer storm. My backyard was infested with mushrooms . . . and HUNDREDS of spoons!”

Gracie’s page has blossomed into something so incredible, funny and meaningful and most importantly – a place for connecting with one another about our love for our 4- footed family members, whether they were pets from our childhood or pets with us today.

I decided to join Facebook because it’s such an easy and great way to connect with others; there is no permanent commitment involved; I can set strict limits as to my privacy so that no information about me is shared. And it’s simple; takes no time to sign up and is free.

By Saralee Perel It was solely because of my dog, Gracie, that I have re-learned to walk after experiencing a spinal cord injury 8 years ago.

So last week, to honor her life, I designed a place where anyone could share whatever they wanted to about their pets. Never would I have expected that by writing one sentence, a community of over 800 would instantly bloom.

Gracie’s fan page is titled, “Saralee Perel Presents Gracie, My 4-Footed Coach.” I had never made a Facebook Fan Page before, because I assumed nothing so wondrous would come of doing so. Part of the attention likely had to do with the first picture I posted. It’s a hilarious picture of Gracie and my husband, Bob, cheating for the SPCA’s dog and owner look-alike contest.

The community took on a life of its own, with people sharing hysterical animal videos they had seen on TV, recipes for dog and cat treats, pictures of beloved pets now gone, as well as newly adopted furry friends. There are homemade videos of dogs doing goofy tricks, including singing as well as “saying” in long drawn-out howls, “I loooovvve you.” There are funny stories about cats doing anything they want to do, in spite of us trying to modify their behavior (as if we ever could). One gal’s cat enjoys shredding the shower curtain.

So that everyone would feel welcomed, I wrote, “We love not only the lost, abandoned and rescued, but also the safe, sound and found; whether they’re award-winning pedigree champions, nolonger ‘useful’ greyhounds, mutts, runts or a combo of all. They are all the same to me.”

The number of people who read those words? According to Facebook analytics: thirty-one thousand, six hundred twenty-seven.

Someone responded, “Here’s my two cents. Dogs never judge each other by their heritage lines. We shouldn’t either.”

A few years ago, I asked a wise woman named Ruth, “What is the most important thing in life?”

She said one word, “Connection.”

Connection can take many forms.

It needn’t be in the traditional form of face-to-face interaction, especially when many of us have trouble getting around.

We are not here to judge which form of connection is the “right” form.

I have close friends whom I adore

that I’ve never even met or whom I haven’t seen for years. When it comes to love, it doesn’t matter if it’s shared at a restaurant, or in someone’s kitchen, or in a group meeting or over the telephone.

We are all allowed to make our own choices when it comes to connection. I am so glad I found my avenue with this community. Won’t you join me?

Helping Hands Outreach announced the 2011 Holdingford City Mother and Father for their dedication to the community. Pictured (from left) is Jeff Fromm, City Mother Rosemary Jarnot, City Father Robert Lane and Joe Christensen.

Helping Hands Outreach had a very special luncheon on Thursday, June 16th. The winners of City Mother and City Father were announced and we celebrated with special music by the Backes Brothers. The Holdingford City Father for 2011 is Bob Lane and the City Mother is Rosemary Jarnot.

Bob grew up in Princeton, MN but started coming to Holdingford in 1954 after he completed high school to help his father, Irish Lane, in his meat market, Lane’s Locker. In early 1955 Bob joined the Army and served his country until 1957. Thereafter, he and his wife Isabelle moved to Holdingford. Bob worked with his dad at Lane’s Locker until 1965 when he and Isabelle purchased the store. Together with their children they operated Lane’s locker until 1975.

Bob continued to serve local businesses with positions at the lumber yard and Kroska Motors while simultaneously driving school bus #8 for Holdingford Public Schools.

In addition to owning Lane’s Locker and working for various local businesses, Bob served the community as a member of the Holdingford Fire Department for 38 years. For the majority of those years, Bob was the Fire Chief.

Bob has also been a long-time, ac-

tive member of the Frank Feia Post 211 American Legion and for a portion of this time Bob helped manage the facilities.

In Bob’s spare time, his favorite hobbies are hunting, fishing and watching sporting events. Bob currently spends his winter in Texas, but in the remaining 7 months spent in Holdingford, he continues to be an active member of the community.

Rosemary Atkinson was born May 10, 1934. She grew up on a farm near St. Anna. She attended a small country school and went on to graduate from Holdingford High School in 1952. After graduation she worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul for 6 years in Admissions.

While living in St. Paul she met her future husband, Clarence Jarnot, who grew up in Holdingford. Clarence and Rosemary married May 4, 1957 and ended up farming near Holdingford.

Their marriage was blessed with nine children, six girls and three boys. Their oldest daughter, Susan, died at the age of nine when killed by a car while waiting at the bus stop. After the death of Susan, Clarence and Rosemary moved to a new farm 2 1/2 miles west of Holdingford.

They farmed for 20+ years until retirement in 1991. During this time Rose-

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

In last week’s column, I wrote that schools would continue receiving state aid payments in the event of a shutdown. That information was based on past history and the most previous shutdown, the one that occurred in ’05. However, according to papers filed with the courts last week by Gov. Dayton, those payments would not occur this time. School payments were not listed among his state functions deemed “essential.”

Among the other things to be shut down are highway construction projects and state payments to nursing homes.

To shut down major highway projects on July 1st, right in the middle of Minnesota’s already short construction season, would hurt the state in several ways.

First, many of those workers would be sent home, and job sites would have to be shut down and made secure. Those workers wouldn’t be collecting pay checks; instead they would be going on unemployment. Second, the condition of our roads wouldn’t be maintained, and some projects, such as the one on Interstate 35E north of the Twin Cities, would probably be left with lanes closed during a shutdown.

I attended a press conference in St. Paul last week where the two legislative transportation chairs, Senator Joe Gimse and Rep. Mike Beard, laid out a plan to keep those road projects going and fund our state’s transportation needs. Nearly 99 percent of all highway funds are dedicated and come from sources such as the gas tax, license fees, and sales tax proceeds on vehicles. Only a small portion of the over-all transportation budget, less than 2 percent, comes from the general fund, and those dollars go to transit, mainly in the metro area.

Dayton to work on coming up with more funding for transit than the original 40-some million contained in the bill vetoed by Dayton. It would take a special session to act on this one bill, but the two legislators estimate they could have all the background work done beforehand, and the legislation could be passed by both chambers in just a few hours.

Not allowing these allocations, along with not funding state payments to nursing homes, would appear to be making this shutdown as painful as possible.

I still believe that no one wants it to occur, but to say, as Gov. Dayton did, that a shutdown is better than the Republican budget plan is very political. It bears repeating that the Republican plan repre-

sents the largest budget in state history and is 6 percent larger than the current spending plan.

Legislative Standoff: The Minnesota State Legislature and Governor Dayton have yet to come to an agreement on the budget for the next biennium, this is the topic of this week’s column. This writer must admit a tremendous amount of frustration with the political games being played in St. Paul.

Exhibit #1: The Republicans first offered a budget of about $32 billion and then increased to $34 billion. The talking point is that this is what is in the checkbook and that they have compromised and now the Governor must meet their demands. In addition, the Republicans were elected on a mandate of holding the line on spending and no new taxes.

They have an excellent point!

Exhibit #2: The Governor offered a $39 billion dollar budget and then split the difference with the Republicans and came down to $35.8 billion. The talking

point is that he has compromised with the Republicans and that they need to meet his demands. The Governor also claims that he was elected with a mandate to raise taxes on the richest 2% of Minnesotans. He has an excellent point!

The problem is that now that both sides must work out a deal that works; this is the tough part about negotiating.

The ultimate objective is to cut a deal that is reasonable for both sides. The other problem is that there are serious repercussions if a deal is not reached in a timely fashion. It is time to quit playing political games, show some statesmanship and develop a budget for the citizens of Minnesota.

It is unlikely that either side will get everything they want but it is the opinion of this writer that most Minnesotans are tired of political games and want to see our elected officials do their job.

Helping Hands continued from page 7 Rosemary’s husband Clarence died in January 2004 after a brave fight with cancer. She loves her 23 grandchildren, ranging from age 6-28. She enjoyed her first grandchild’s wedding June 18th.

While her grandchildren are the joy of her life, she loves her volunteer work and helping out in the community. She has met wonderful people and the work is very fulfilling for her. Especially dear

to her heart are her in-home visits for the home-bound. She enjoys visiting with them and values the friendships that have formed. She hopes to give back to the community for many years.

One of Rosemary’s favorite things is to give hugs and if you have ever talked to her you might have heard the works “Hugs are free.”

maintenance road. After discussion Sup. Johnson made a motion to gravel as needed on minimum maintenance part of 321st Ave. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

The family of Adelbert Lambrecht had a representative present to discuss moving Flicker Road.

They presented a plat from 1915 showing lots along Little Swan Lake. A current GIS map from the county shows the road going through the lots. They asked the township for permission to straighten the road and if the township would share in the costs.

In the discussion the board agreed the road could be moved, however the township did not agree to cost sharing as the township has not done so in the past.

The developer is responsible for the cost of building a road in a development and the township may take it over after inspecting the completed road. The township would consider an offer of the township taking over maintenance of the road as soon as it is built instead of the one year warranty.

Someone asked if the yield sign is the correct sign or in the correct place. The county decided what sign to place where, the township was not responsible. Both sides will research costs involved and will discuss this at another meeting.

A member of the Long Lake Association made a presentation to construct a dry hydrant in the area and offered a donation to the effort. Other clubs in the area may be asked for additional donations.

The board supported the Long Lake Association spear heading a dry hydrant at no cost to the township on a motion by Sup. Johnson and a second by Sup Thompson.

Motion passed.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to accept the ditch mowing/ brush cutting contract from Ervin Muellner. Motion seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Township clean up day went well. The bill had not been received as of the meeting.

After review the road description on Resolution #2011-02 was found to be incorrect. Sup. Johnson made a motion to rescind the resolution. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. A resolution with a correct description will be presented at the next meeting.

In the road report more gravel will be added to Flower Trail, 321st Ave, and south of 162nd St and repack. Also, supervisors and contractor will inspect 180th St to see how to best improve frost boil area.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $124,492.42 before tonight’s bills. The report was approved on a motion by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Thompson to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on June 28, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

MnDOT urges keeping event signs, items for sale away from highway rights of way The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds citizens that placing unauthorized signs and other objects on state highway right of way is illegal and can distract drivers and obstruct their vision.

“With summer here, we are already seeing an increase in advertising signs and items for sale placed illegally along state highways to attract the attention of passing motorists,” said Steve Lund, MnDOT’s state maintenance engineer.

“Signs created to attract a driver’s eye can easily distract motorists from paying full attention to driving, which can lead to crashes.”

Placing signs or objects in highway right of way is a misdemeanor violation punishable by a maximum $1,000 fine and/or 90 days in jail. Highway rights of way include driving lanes, shoulders,

State law also says that signs and other items may not be placed on private property outside of the right of way limits but in proximity to a roadway without consent of the landowner.

MnDOT crews will remove all signs within the right of way without notice.

Unauthorized signs include, but are not limited to-real estate open houses, garage sales and signs for various public and private events and activities.
