The elderly man leaned forward in his chair. “Young man,” he growled, “these two words are the key to your success – RIGHT DECISIONS!” “Thank you, sir. But how can I make sure I am making right decisions?”

“Experience. Experience will insure

you make right decisions.”

A long silence followed. “That is helpful,” said the young executive, “but how do I get the right experience?”

The elderly man stood, looked him directly in the eye, smiled and responded, “WRONG DECISIONS.” This retiring president admitted to making mistakes and learned from them.

I’ve discovered that the biggest mistake people can make is to be afraid to make one, and perhaps the next biggest is to be afraid to admit having made one.

If you make a mistake, ’fess up. Most of the time people respect those who take responsibility for their own mistakes.

Regardless, you will be better off admitting it than spending considerably more energy trying to avoid the subject.

Everyone makes mistakes, after all, and if you take the time to learn from what went wrong, you’ll be a lot less likely to make the same mistake again.

Be accountable. No one likes doing business with someone who makes

excuses. If you don’t accept responsibility for the mistakes you make, you’ll lose customers and the trust and respect of employees.

As Winston Churchill said, “If you simply take up the attitude of defending a mistake, there will be no hope of improvement.”

Don’t waste time pretending you’ve still got a chance at success when your plans are crumbling around you. You’ve got to be hard-nosed about deciding where to put your resources, and coldblooded about pulling the plug on projects and goals that aren’t working out.

Even geniuses must admit mistakes: Thomas Edison once spent more than $2 million on an invention that proved useless. In today’s dollars, we’re talking about serious money!

Also, don’t downplay negative results. Some people try to act as if their failures are no big deal. Don’t lose hope or abandon your efforts, but be open about your feelings with yourself and other people.

Author Mortimer Feinberg illustrated that point: “When John Kennedy lost a bid for the Democratic vice presidential nomination in 1956 to Estes Kefauver, he didn’t quit. He said, ‘Okay, now we know the mistakes we made; we know what we have to do to win. In 1960 we’ll go for the big job.’ The rest is history.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cats - Part 2

Cats do things that humans find remarkable. This story will deal with a couple of Tomcats that were a part of our lives about 30 years ago.

Meet Fat Cat and Charley Whiner. Both were brothers.

Both were gold and yellow striped. Fat Cat was somewhat rotund and Charley Whiner constantly spoke to us in cat language. Both of them were neutered outside cats.

My wife had a surgery, after which she was subject to bed-rest at home for the next 4 days. After her return home, Charley Whiner insisted that he be allowed in the house. He then jumped on the couch where she was recuperating and cuddled next to her. He stayed there until she was able to be up in the house, after which he again wanted to be out. It was like he felt he had done his job and now he wanted to go back to his outside life.

Evidently cats sometimes have fun. I recall one summer afternoon, while looking out the window, I saw a chipmunk doing ‘chipmunk’ things toward the edge of the yard. I then noticed Charley Whiner beginning a sneak approach toward the chipmunk, which was about 50 feet away. I thought the confrontation would be interesting. It took about 15 minutes for the cat to do his slow, stealthy approach to his victim. When he was about 3 feet from the chipmunk he became airborn and dropped on the surprised chipmunk, who then made a desperate jump to get away from the cat.

The chipmunk then ran across the yard and the cat didn’t attempt to chase it. Charley Whiner just stood at the landing spot with what seemed to be a smile on his face thinking boy, I sure scared the heck out of that chipmunk! Evidently he wasn’t hungry or he had previously eaten chipmunk and it didn’t taste good.

One time Charley Whiner was coming down the field road after a field trip to the woods. As was common, as he was walking along doing a steady, loud

it, move on. Beating yourself up publicly or privately doesn’t do much good. You need to keep your focus and not get distracted when things go wrong. The great Babe Ruth held the record of 714 career home runs for years, but he also held the record for strikeouts at 1,330.

Would he have been so successful if he had focused on the strikeouts every time he was up to bat?

Above all, don’t blame others. Focus on solving problems, not finding someone or something to blame.

Good managers (and employees) analyze what they did wrong and learn from it. When you take this tack with yourself, your employees will be encouraged to learn to look objectively at their own performance.

Remember the old proverb: stumbling is not falling. And falling does not have to mean failing. Most important, failure is not final.

Christopher Columbus made the mother of all mistakes. When he set out in 1492 on his first transAtlantic voyage, he announced that he was going west to get to the east. He had plenty of skeptics, but refused to be deterred.

Other explorers had preceded his arrival in North America, but perhaps his biggest mistake was that Columbus never admitted that he had reached a continent previously unknown to Europeans, rather than the East Indies for which he had set course. Columbus always insisted that the lands that he visited during those voyages were part of the Asian continent. While not without controversy, Columbus’ “mistake” changed the course of Western history.

Your mistakes will not likely have that kind of impact. Keep your mistakes in perspective so you can react to them appropriately.

meowing sound. A barking fox was following him from about 100 feet away. Old Charley occasionally looked back at the fox, but neither seemed the desire to make any close contact. The fox and the cat were about equal in size. It seemed the fox was curious and the cat had other things to do.

My most memorable experience with the cats occurred one beautiful, warm fall day. I needed to clean the chimney, so I put the extension ladder against the house, since it was 14 feet to the roof-line.

I had just dropped the cleaner into the chimney, when Fat Cat climbed unto the roof from the ladder. I gave him some verbal hassle about how he shouldn’t be on the roof. About a minute later Charley Whiner also came up the ladder. They both began loud meowing, which was followed by some noisy physical contact.

It seemed that they each felt the other shouldn’t be up there. I stomped my foot and yelled at them, which made them decide to get down from the roof. They

both then went over to the ladder and tried to decide what would be the best way down. After some serious thought Charley Whiner decided to go down the ladder head first. His first step was to get his front feet on the first lower step, leaving his back feet on the next upper step. This position left his rear end exposed and since Fat Cat evidently hadn’t forgotten their previous fight on the roof, he reached out with his paw and put his claws into Charley Whiner’s rear end. Charley Whiner let out a loud meow and reached up to grab Fat Cat’s paw, which caused him to loose contact with the ladder and he went bonking down the ladder. I then yelled at Fat Cat and he quickly decided to exit head first.

Cats have given us a lot of pleasant memories.

They have really added joy to our lives.

Obituaries Edward B. “Ed” Mueller Edward B. “Ed” Mueller, age 90 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, June 15, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, June 23, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Gabriel Walz officiating and Rev. Marvin Enneking concelebrating. Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Catholic United Financial will pray at 5 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Edward Bernard Mueller was born June 4, 1928 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Henry and Anna (Kettler) Mueller. On September 9, 1953 he married Katherine Oevermann at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Ed completed schooling through ninth grade and started farming with his father on the family farm. He and Kitty farmed on the same farm until 1993, when their son, Jamie, took over the farm. Ed and Kitty then moved into the town of Melrose.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Catholic United Financial, and served on the board for St. Mary’s School and the Credit Union. Ed has been the Fire Warden for Melrose Township and on the board for many years. He enjoyed bowling, watching the Minnesota Twins and St. Louis Cardinals baseball teams, and playing cards. Ed loved spending time with his family, especially with his wife of 64 years and his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Survivors include his loving wife, Katherine “Kitty” Mueller of Melrose; children, Diane (Jim) Bösl of Sauk Centre, David (Karen) Mueller of Freeport, Joyce (Roger Gullette) Mueller of Waite Park, Steve (Lila) Mueller of Freeport, Kenneth Mueller of Melrose, John (Kristi) Mueller of Melrose, Joan (Keith) Sand of Avon, Janel (Joel) Gray of St. Cloud, and Jamie (Shannon) Mueller of Melrose; 23 grandchildren and 19 greatgrandchildren with one due in August; and sister-in-law, Mildred Mueller of Melrose.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lawrence Mueller and Joseph Mueller; and sisters, Loretta (Edward) Frieler, Mary Mueller, Agnes (Boniface) Hinnenkamp, Adella (Herb) Thelen, and Irene (Ronald) Shay.

Serving as casket bearers will be his grandsons, Michael Bösl, Brandon Bösl, D.J. Orth, Aaron Mueller, Justin Mueller, Nathan Mueller, and Daniel Mueller. Cross bearer will be Mckenna Mueller and scripture bearer will be Jennifer Steinemann.

Louis L. Imdieke, age 59 of St. Cloud, died after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 18 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Gabriel Walz officiating.

Interment was held in the parish cemetery.

Louis LeRoy Imdieke was born October 26, 1958 in Melrose, Minnesota to Lawrence J. and Lucille (Schleppenbach) Imdieke.

He graduated from Melrose High School and furthered his education by earning a degree in Commercial Arts at Alexandria Technical College in Alexandria. At the age of 10, Louis began playing drums and was musically talented. He played for three

Don Money, 86, of Andover MN passed away on June 13th 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

Celebration of Life services were held Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at Grace Lutheran Church, Andover, MN. Burial followed in Morningside Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Coon Rapids.

Don was born in St. Paul, MN on July 12th 1931. He graduated from Murray High

bands, Crystal Breeze, Rosewood, and most recently, Top Notch. Louis loved all music, was very athletic, and was a huge Minnesota Timberwolves fan. He also enjoyed Bible studies and being a part of the spiritual ministry at the correctional facilities in St. Cloud and Benton County.

Survivors include his significant other, Rhonda Wimmer of St. Cloud; mother, Lucille Imdieke of Meire Grove; brothers and sisters, Linda (Mike) Klaphake of Melrose, LuAnn Imdieke of St. Paul, Leona Ulrich of Perham, LaVonne (Rich) Gallus of St. Joseph, Lyle (Jacqueline) Imdieke of Northfield, Lynette (Fred) Imdieke-Struzyk of South Haven, Laura Imdieke of St. Cloud, Lisa (Mike) Arend of Andover, Lloyd (Shelly) Imdieke of St. Cloud, and Lila (Tim) Smith of Crystal; and many nieces and nephews.

Louis was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Imdieke, Sr.; and brothers, Lawrence “Larry” Imdieke, Jr. and Lynn Imdieke.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

School in 1950, was then drafted into the Army in 1951. He was honorably discharged in Feb. 1954 and married his sweetheart Lola Durant in April that year.

Don worked at Honeywell for 31 years as an engineering Tech, then an electronics teacher at Anoka Vo-tech for 2 years. He then started his 2nd career at Dahlquist Machine delivering parts around the cities part time for 21 years.

Don loved life, his family beyond words, hunting, fishing, golf, bowling and time spent with family and friends at the family lake cabin and of course he always had a joke or two.

He is survived by his wife Lola Money; Children: David Money, Lynn Fountain (Ken), Lisa Money, Darwin Money (Alynn); 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren.

Melrose Church Arson Solved

On March 11, 2016, the Stearns County Communications Center received a 911 phone call at 4:43 p.m. reporting heavy smoke coming from the rear of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. A second caller reported flames coming from the same area. The Melrose Police Department, Melrose Fire Department and Melrose Ambulance service responded along with the Freeport and Sauk Centre Fire Departments. Firefighters from these agencies battled the blaze and had it contained around 8:30 p.m.

In the following days, an investigation began involving the Melrose Police Department, The State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The fire caused several million dollars in damage to the 118-year-old Romanesque Revival style church. About a week and a half after the fire, investigators officially determined and released information that the fire was classified as an arson.

The church was a fixture in the City of Melrose with its 130 foot towers. The fire caused extensive damage to the altar and sacristy area. The wood altar, which was made in Germany, and installed prior to the churches dedication in 1899, was completely destroyed. In addition to the damage cause by the fire, there

were several feet of standing water in the basement.

For the next 22 months, the Melrose Police Department diligently investigated the arson fire along with their State and Federal partners. They conducted a thorough investigation and followed up on any leads and tips.

In January of 2018, the Melrose Police Department contacted the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and requested assistance in reviewing the file and providing additional investigative help.

Stearns County Investigators began a review of the file and identified areas to further investigate. During the course of the investigation, numerous people were re-interviewed and potential evidence re-examined. On Tuesday June 5th, Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Investigators conducted an interview with a juvenile. During the course of that interview, the juvenile confessed that he/she intentionally set the arson fire at the church.

The Stearns County Attorney’s Office charged the juvenile, who was 13 years old at the time of the offense, with Arson in the First Degree in Stearns County Juvenile Court. The Juvenile Court proceedings are, by law, confidential because of the juvenile’s age at the time of the offense. No further information concerning those proceedings can or will be released.

Sheriff Don Gudmundson said, “Any unsolved crime produces a sense of unease in communities. I know the arson of the church has left an indelible mark on the entire area. In solving the case, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was pleased to take the fine investigative work of the Melrose Police Department, the Minnesota State Fire Marshal and Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives to a successful conclusion. It is our hope that this will be a positive step in putting the community at ease along with the healing for the congregation of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.”

Lori Scherping Benefit to be held June 24

Lori Scherping is the daughter of Loren and Jane Scherping of Freeport.

She is a 36 year old woman who was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in the summer of 2016. This past fall Lori found to have a fractured vertebrae and the cancer had spread to her spine, liver and brain.

I have $60,000 in student loan debt I’m trying to pay off, a small amount left on my home mortgage, plus I’ve been investing in a lot of gold and silver. Those investments are worth about $30,000 right now. In addition to this, I’ve got $10,000 in cash just sitting in a savings account for emergencies. Should I stop the gold and silver investing, and focus on paying off the loans, or keep splitting my money between them?

-Adam Dear Adam, I’d stop investing in gold and silver completely. I don’t put money in precious metals at all, because they have a lousy long-term track record.

My advice would be to cash out every bit of your gold and silver, and put the money toward paying off your student loans. That would instantly cut your student loan debt in half. Then, with your salary, you should be able to pay off the rest in just a few months.

The key will be to start living on a very strict budget. Don’t spend on anything that’s not absolutely necessary.

I also want you to temporarily stop contributing to your 401(k). Do this just until you get the student loan debt wiped out, then pick it up again like before. If you want to put even more toward retirement, you could check with a quality investment professional — one

June 6, 2018: At 11:56 Hunter Cavallero, 19, of Long Prairie was driving his 2011 Kawasaki 250f dirt bike in the ditch on Highway 71 near Midway Gas when he lost control and hit a street sign. Cavalerro was thrown from the bike, he was wearing a helmet and had minor injures. Long Prairie Ambulance and Long Prairie Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.

June 12, 2018: At 13:21 Kathleen Hinnenkamp reported a theft of a water pump and pressure tank from her residence on County 47 South of Grey Eagle. The theft happened sometime over the last 6 months.

June 14, 2018: At 12.23 Jessie Raile age 29 of Long Prairie was West bound on County Road 12 two mile East of Long Prairie with his 1996 Cadi when he struck the rear of a John Deere farm tractor pulling a hay rake West bound driven by Kevin Faust of rural Long Prairie. No injuries were reported. No passengers in either vehicle. The car was a total loss and heavy damage done to the farm wheel rake.

By Jesse Lovelace It was announced in St, Mary’s parish bulletin in Melrose on Sunday June 17 that a plan for a new “Worship Space” has been submitted to the Diocesan Building Commission for approval and a decision will arrive in a month or so. The parish has been down this road before. Over a year ago, the bishop and the commission flatly denied a proposal for restoration of the present church. Despite ample proof that the fire damaged parish church can easily be restored, the bishop and parish leaders have consistently denied the

facts and insisted that St. Mary’s will have a new “worship space.” They have hired a liturgical consultant and an architect (both at great expense) and claim weekly in the parish bulletin that progress is being made in “our journey together,” yet there has been no date set for start or completion and no plans for raising the funds necessary. In fact, there have been some allegations that the insurance award, supposedly dedicated to the restoration of the damaged church, is being misused, contrary to both canon and civil law.

There could be some grave consequences.

By Debra Bellman From sea to shining sea, our country is one vast migrant camp and refugee holding facility. I love my country. Everyone who arrived from elsewhere came as a migrant, forced or free. And many came in the spirit of a refugee, leaving by necessity, often penniless, sometimes traumatized, and arriving nervous, hopeful, and full of gratitude to be here. Such people make excellent citizens.

Indigenous people who survived the initial invasion, and now serve two nationhoods, have their own experiences of migration, forced and free, within U.S. borders. And many will have a natural empathy with people who must leave and must arrive somewhere, redefining what is home.

We are still a new nation, finding our way. Our brilliant Constitution needs to work for everyone here. Factions that would favor one economic class, race, religion or ethnicity over another do not serve democracy. Democracy is our only good choice, and we are all in it together.

European nations may feel full from the recent influx of people. We are not.

We have space and opportunity. Tech companies crave skilled workers. Rural areas need doctors. Our elderly need nursing care.

Food production and processing operations are crying for willing workers. And we

Whether we call ourselves a melting pot or a salad bowl, we have always had our many and varied ingredients. This defines who we are.

I am not naive. I know there are bad seeds. I also know bad seeds are sprinkled throughout humanity, and are not concentrated in any one race, religion, or ethnicity.

It is traditional that Canadians and Mexicans come here for opportunity, with some of them staying permanently. We share a continent with these people. Canada and Mexico are our first and second largest trade partners. They are not our enemies.

Today, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, our neighbors further south, are experiencing uncontrolled violence. It is natural that many of their citizens will seek asylum here. Jeh Johnson, former Secretary of National Security, put it this way, “You cannot keep people from leaving a burning building.” If we want to stop this influx of asylum seekers, we need to address the root cause. This means going there and helping out our neighbors. And this will take time.

Meanwhile, we cannot morally close our eyes, our hearts, and our doors. John Kelly, Chief of Staff to the president, referred to these brown-skinned, Spanish-speaking asylum seekers as rural people without good educations, and said they will not make good U.S. citizens. I disagree.

They have all the qualifications that John Kelly’s own immigrant relatives had. And this is true for a lot of us here today.

As a nation, when we give love, we are very likely to get love in return. I believe in love.

Mark: Family Trouble This summary covers Mark 3:7-35.

The first 2 chapters of Mark move fast, Jesus is moving fast. Jesus’ popularity increases greatly. In the third chapter he appoints the 12 disciples, and then he goes home. By home this is where his brothers and sisters and mother live. And when they heard about the stuff Jesus was doing they try to stop him. His own family, if you can believe it want to stop and impede the Messiah, the Son of God. The care and concern we have for those close to us, especially families, can cause troubles when our plans conflict with theirs.

Jesus’ plan was to fulfill his Fathers will and to accomplish what his heavenly Father sent him in the power of the Holy Spirit to do it fast. His mother and brothers think he is out of his mind. Even Mary his mother, who had a front row seat from his conception was seeking him out to keep him in line.

It has been my experience that the church family is usually the first to act in trying to stop something too big from happening in the church. There is almost this mentality that if something takes off and gains too much popularity that it is bad. That the person leading it is doing something wrong in bringing God’s love to people or in serving the community in a way that is having a big impact. That someone is out of their mind if they allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide them to big and amazing things.

Jesus’ mother and brothers think this way.

In Verse 22 the scribes join in and claim Jesus is being possessed by Satan. Jesus cor-

rects this teaching by talking about a divided house. Ironically enough his very own home was divided. The solution to sin and lies is to first bind the strong man, deal with the sin then proceed. The forgiveness of sins is the solution and the focus of Jesus’ ministry and teaching and is reemphasized by Jesus at this point. The only sin that is not forgivable is blaspheme against the Holy Spirit because when we are opposed to the Holy Spirit we are also opposed to forgiveness of sins God gives and that is a house divided.

Even a house divided and in disagreement concerning the best path forward, or hesitant to support some new ministry that is going too fast will not be divided against itself if it has forgiveness of sins and faith in Jesus. The real family trouble we have in the church and in our homes is the challenge we face in fostering the will of the Holy Spirit to bring forgiveness of sins to all people through Jesus.

The family of God is far bigger than most of us realize. Jesus’ brothers and sisters and sometimes even his mother fare the people who do the will of God. They are the ones seeking God and thus Jesus wherever he is to be found and the forgiveness he has to offer. Amen.

Burnhamville Township May 29, 2018 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held May 29, 2018 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Bruce Johnson and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Hank Wilhelm, Bonnie Kuehne and Erv Herdering were also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of April 24, 2018 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Berscheit. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson.

Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about Pillsbury bridge inspection, City of Swanville annexation approval, canoe path on Swan River starting at the beach, summer specialized training for board members, clerk and election judge trainings, and City of Swanville water discharge into Swan River.

A resident was there to complain about a large black hose blocking Ermine Drive road in the middle of May. He was wondering if someone had a permit to do this. The township did not give a permit to anyone to put a hose across any road. The township requests that anyone who is planning on putting anything across a road that would impede traffic contact the township officials first.

They should have constructed a ramp over the hose to allow traffic

to go through.

Another resident was there with several concerns. She said a duck pond was taken out along County Road 13 and was wondering how they could do this. This is a county soil and water concern and not the township. She was wondering why the DNR was not watching or regulating the fires in that area. The board told her that is a DNR issue. Now that the trees are cleared in that area residents are concerned about run off.

Board advised her to have county soil and water make sure there is an adequate grass basin for runoff by that culvert. She had questions about township regulating dogs running loose. Township does not have any regulations controlling dogs. She was concerned about neighbors doing target shooting.

Board advised her to follow DNR rules. She was requesting 30 mile per hour speed limit signs. After discussion of the effectiveness of speed limit signs, the board agreed to put up Pedestrian Crossing Signs. She asked if the road blading could be done earlier in the week so the week end traffic would not wear out the smooth road right away. The contractor said he could try.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5578 through 5594: Rev. $2,252.14; R & B $23,819.17, Fire $9,458.50. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

City of Swanville had a public hearing on May 8 to discuss annexing more land from Burn-

hamville Township which includes a walking path. Township board is not in favor of the city taking more land from the township. The orderly annexation went through as of May 29, 2018.

In the road report the dust control spraying is mostly done.

The annual road inspection report was reviewed. The 210th project will continue when contractor has time.

After reviewing the ditch mowing bids received Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the bid from KB Specialties. Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner.

Motion passed with Sup. Berscheit abstaining.

The annual township cleanup day was well used on Saturday, May 19. Residents filled 3.5 dumpsters and the city and township will split the costs.

Supervisors will follow up on access permits to see if they are ready for top gravel.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $108,704.01. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Supervisors will start weed inspections later in June.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Dept.

June 3, 2018: Deputy Eric Schultz responded to a burglary report south of the City of Avon in Avon Township. The caller indicated he went to bed on Friday night and forgot to check if his overhead garage door was shut.

When he woke up the next morning and was preparing to leave, he discovered the garage door was open and items were missing. He suspects the timeframe of the burglary was between 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. The items missing were: DeWalt Drill, DeWalt circular saw, 2 DeWalt batteries, DeWalt Charger, Craftsman socket set, Craftsman screwdriver set and a key chain with keys.

Also taken, and who knows why, was an athletic bag with a pair of shorts, shirts, socks and Nike tennis shoes. Total value of the items was $825. If you have any information about this burglary, please contact us at 320-251-4240.

June 9-10, 2018: On June 9th and 10th the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office received two thefts from cars in the City of Holdingford.

Both of these thefts from vehicles occurred at the same location in the 900 block of 5th Street and probably at the same time. The first was reported on the 9th around 11:15 p.m. The caller went to her car at 11:00 p.m. and noticed

her car had been rummaged through. Her center console was open and her purse had been gone through. Her wallet, which contained her MN driver’s license, her debit card and about $10.00 in cash was missing. The second call came into the Sheriff’s Office at 2:24 p.m. on the 10th. The caller was also reporting her car had been gone through and she was missing her wallet. She left her car in the parking lot the previous evening. She was missing her wallet, which contained several credit cards, a debit card and her social security card. Both of these cars were left unlocked in the parking lot overnight.

Stearns County Sheriff comments, “the single best thing you can do to prevent this type of crime is to lock your cars even in your own driveway. This is a crime of opportunity. Try not to give the thief the opportunity. The other thing is to never leave important or valuable items in your vehicle and certainly not in plain sight. Certainly some feel that these precautions are not necessary because of where they live. As you can see, this type of thing can happen anywhere even in a smaller town like Holdingford. Not to be too corny, but Ben Franklin did tell us ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.’ Thankfully, it appears that both victims were able to place a hold on their cards before the cards could be used elsewhere.”

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu and my power steering has started to give me trouble. I’m a regular listener of your Under The Hood radio show and even though I’m not much of a mechanic you have motivated me to get under my own hood and see what I may find. I thought I’d start with the fluid but now I feel a little strange because I can’t seem to find where to fill it. I don’t even see hoses in the area of the steering gear. Am I missing something? I love the show guys, keep up the great work!

-Dawn Dear Dawn, Don’t lose confidence in your mechanical abilities. You are not missing something, actually the car is. It’s missing power steering fluid and hoses because many vehicles are now switching to electric power steering. They eliminate the fluid pump and hoses and use an electric motor attached directly to the steering gear which provides electric assist. It can be a good thing as some of the cars will provide electric steering assist if the engine were to stall helping with safety.

The downside is that they can be very expensive to repair. Check with your local dealership if yours is giving you trouble.

They did have a recall on some of them and if yours is one then you could save hundreds of dollars by making a phone call to find out if it’s included.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, The tires on my 2004 Lincoln drop air pressure. I add air as often as every few days. I have had new tires installed and have made several return trips back to the tire store where they checked for leaks and did what they called resealed the bead whatever that is but they still leak. They now tell me I’m on my own unless I want to buy a full set of new wheels because that is the source of my leakage. Are they for real? How do wheels leak?

-Michael Dear Michael, This subject comes up a lot both on our radio show and in our shop. Tires can leak air for one of two reasons. The first is the tire itself has a puncture which in most cases can be found just by looking at the tire with the naked eye. Often there will be something stuck in the tread or sidewall.

The second is something leaking from the wheel and valve stem assembly. In the case of having all four tires leak at the same time it’s more likely in the wheels like

your store says rather than punctures in the tires. When a car has leaking wheels, it can come from corrosion on the beads and even porosity in the aluminum causing leaks right through the wheel and yes replacement of the wheel is often the only fix. There are many stylish aftermarket options available.
