Okay, so he only got it half-right.

Perhaps he should have paid better attention to Fred Rogers, legendary television personality whose programs for children live on in the hearts of generations. He said, “There are three ways to ultimate success: “The first way is to be kind.

“The second way is to be kind.

“The third way is to be kind.”

Being kind is not just a lesson for children. This is a fundamental life skill that we should instill in children so that they grow up to be kind adults.

Kindness is one of the strongest of all virtues. When you are good to others, you are best to yourself. Kindness is the oil that takes the friction out of life.

And the best part of all? You don’t

need any special schooling or skills.

Everyone can be kind – if they decide to be.

“One who knows how to show and to accept kindness will be a friend better than any possession,” said Sophocles, the ancient Greek playwright.

Kindness is not weakness. Quite the opposite, kindness demonstrates a basic decency and respect that reflects a willingness to get along even when you disagree.

You’ve all heard the old saying that nice people finish last. Not true. Nice people can and often do finish first. No one wants to work with or do business with someone that treats them rudely or disrespectfully. Practice these habits until they become second nature: First, be kind to yourself. You’ll find being nice to others easier if you build your self-respect with positive thoughts about your personality and achievements.

Treat everyone with respect. Don’t worry about who’s on top.

Treat everyone the way you want to be treated, regardless of their position or job title.

Share credit where it is due.

Say no when necessary. You can’t do everything. But when you do say no, be polite and positive.

Plant seeds of kindness. Do something nice every day even when your kindness may not have an immediate payoff.

Complete the statement: “If I were a kinder person I would …” and then act on it.

Set your sights on another. Pick a person and make him or her the recipient of a random act of kindness. Small acts often work wonders. Give a compliment.

Offer help to someone struggling with their work. Share an inexpensive treat you know they like. You’ll likely lift the spirits of the other person as well as yourself.

“Kindness is more than deeds. It is an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch,” said C. Neil Strait, author and pastor. “It is anything that lifts another person.”

Kindness works everywhere: in the office and at home, even on the farm!

Great Britain’s Newcastle University found that cattle treated with care and a ‘more personal touch’ tend to produce more milk for farmers. Newcastle’s School of Agriculture studied over 500 farmers across the UK and found that cows given names by their owners gave over 50 percent more milk than cattle that were nameless. Yep, we all want to feel special.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Father’s Day We sometimes forget how much of “us” is a result of our father’s influence. They influenced what we eat, how we find solutions to problems, our faith-based preferences, our political preferences, our opinions regarding others, our economic thinking, our work ethic, our relaxation preferences, etc. After a period of thought, we find that we have assumed many of the “things” which made our father special and different from others.

When I think of my father, I think of all the various farm duties he taught me. It wasn’t like he set me down at a table and explained every specific part of the things I needed to know about the job before I was able to do it. I usually followed him around watching him do the job, thereby at some special time, the job became mine to do. At first it was a good feeling, because it showed that I was another step toward growing up, but as time passed it was just another job for me to do.

There was one exception. That was learning to drive the farm pick-up. There was some practiced coordination needed to be able to get the foot-feed and the clutch to work together to avoid digging trenches with the rear wheels or killing the engine. I didn’t learn this skill from driving tractor, since our tractors had a hand clutch. Learning to drive the pick-up was needed so that I could move the feed and grain around the farmstead. Or occasionally allow me to show my buddies how well or possibly how crazy I could drive.

We, like most farm families heated and cooked with wood, so from the time I could walk and be with dad, there were various jobs in the wood-gathering process to which I was exposed. At first, it was picking up little sticks. As time went by, I and the sticks became bigger and became branches trimmed from the fallen trees. Loading seasoned wood into the pickup for delivery to the house came next. Sometime along the way, the job included helping carry the tree trunks to an open area, so they would be ready to be placed on the “saw rig” to be cut to stove length chunks. The next job was splitting and loading the chunks on the pick-up to deliver to the farm wood shed.

I need to enter a thought. If cattle feed didn’t have to be moved, if their excrement didn’t have to be moved, if rocks didn’t have to be moved and if wood didn’t have to be moved, cell phones would have been invented sooner just to have something for farm kids to do???

A special childhood memory includes wood cutting. It was Christmas vacation, the snow was only about 6 inches deep, an excellent time to cut wood, since the weather was cool, bugs weren’t a problem, we needed to cut next year’s wood and dad and I could spend time in the woods, which we both enjoyed. The morning temperature was below zero and when dad started the pick-up, it went groan, groan, groan, chugga,

boy walking through the woods to a country school out in northwest Missouri, I read a fable about the sun and the wind. They quarreled about which was the stronger, and the wind said, ‘I’ll prove I am. See the old man down there with a coat? I bet I can get his coat off him quicker than you can.’

“So the sun went behind a cloud, and the wind blew until it was almost a tornado, but the harder it blew, the tighter the old man clutched his coat to him.

“Finally the wind calmed down and gave up, and then the sun came out from behind the clouds and smiled kindly on the old man. Presently, he mopped his brow and pulled off his coat.

The sun then told the wind that gentleness and kindness were always stronger than fury and force.”

chugga, chugga, groan, groan, engine kick, groan, groan and the engine actually did a rough start. It was cold in the pick-up and cold in the woods. Dad always carried a feed sack to start the fire in the brush pile and we hurried to get that fire going as soon as possible. As branches were added to the pile, the fire became higher and hotter. Sometimes we would wait to add more branches because it was too hot to be close to the burning pile. The snapping and crackling from the fire actually echoed from the local wooded hills. When we went to the pick-up to go home at noon, as announced by the noon and train whistle from 5 miles away, the snow still gave it’s below zero

crunch, but we were carrying our jackets, our mitts were off and we now had the ear-flaps up. We were warm and felt good to see the big wood pile we created.

Obituaries Scott P. Keppers

Scott P. Keppers, age 53, of rural Holdingford passed away peacefully at his home with his family at his side, Wednesday, June 12, 2019. He fought his medical condition the way he lived his life, with strength, grace, and a strong faith and complete trust in God’s plan.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 17, 2019 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, rural Freeport (north of Albany on Hwy. 238). Inurnment was in the parish cemetery.

Scott Paul Keppers was born January 27, 1966 in Melrose, Minnesota, the son of Paul and Virginia “Ginger” (Philipsek)

Keppers. He was a graduate of Holdingford High School. Scott was united in marriage to Jane Sundermann on September 30, 1989 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Throughout the years, Scott worked as a semi driver, carpenter, welder, and the last 20 years, as a fabricator/welder for Rotochopper in St. Martin. Scott was a lifelong member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Scott loved to spend time with his family. He enjoyed farming, tinkering in his shed whether repairing things for his neighbors and friends, or creating an invention. He loved to figure things out and could take on any project and make it work.

He was always willing to stop his own work and help someone else in need.

Scott is survived by his wife, Jane (Sundermann) Keppers; sons, Jason of Long Prairie, Eric (Alissa Gertken) and Kyle of Holdingford; daughter, Holly of Holdingford; father, Paul Kepper of St. Francis; siblings, Judy (Vince) Ikeogu, Jill (Rich) Wielenberg, Paula (Dean) Yacucha, Tom (Vickie) Keppers and Brad (Becky) Keppers; and many nieces and nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia “Ginger” Keppers.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of LeRoy Young, age 87 of Holdingford, was held Monday June 17 at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary in Holdingford.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

LeRoy died Wednesday at the

St. Cloud Hospital.

LeRoy was born April 1, 1932 in Arban to Edward and Theresa (Lange) Young. He grew up on his family farm and he entered the U.S. Army in 1951. He was discharged in 1953 and returned to farming.

He married Eileen Bauer on July 17, 1956.

He was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Mary, the Knights of Columbus, the Holdingford American Legion and the Holdingford VFW. He is survived by his children, Diane Young, Holdingford; Deb (Dan) Knapp, Avon; Doris (Allan) Pilarski, St. Cloud; Delroy Young, Holdingford; Donna (Ken) Knapp, Avon; Duane Young, Holdingford; Ed Young, Holdingford; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Jerome (Darlene) Young, Holdingford and sister-in-law, Lorraine Hartung.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eileen Young on July 12, 2018; an infant sister, Jeanette Young and his brotherin-law, Stephen Hartung.

Arrangements were with the MillerCarlin Funeral Home in Holdingford.

Gerald E. “Jerry” Schurman Gerald E. “Jerry” Schurman, age 69 of Sauk Centre, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, June 18 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jim Maderak officiating.

Military honors were provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard. A private family inurnment will be held later in the parish cemetery.

Gerald Edward Schurman was born July 24, 1949 in Melrose, Minnesota to Virgil “Bud” and Florence (Brickweg) Schurman. He was a 1967 graduate of Sauk Centre High School and served in the Army National Guard. His love of sports led him to participate in school athletics and city league basketball and softball. He was united in marriage to Jane Leukam on February 27, 1982 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Jerry worked alongside his parents on the family farm and eventually took over the family business. He owned and operated Schurman Farms & Grain along with expanding into Schurman Excavating. Jerry and the entire Schurman family are so proud of their dedicated employees over the years and the work they did for their customers. He was always checking the weather forecasts, news updates and sports scores. Going for drives to check on the fields was one of his favorite activities, which would usually end up with a stop somewhere for ice cream!

Jerry was an avid sports fan, most notably of Golden Gophers football and basketball.

He was a long-time season ticket holder and many friends and family accompanied him

to Gophers games. He was able to spend time with his kids and their friends coaching youth basketball and as a spectator watching their various activities.

Jerry loved boating and golfing. He even scored a hole in one on his last round of golf this spring. He especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He and his wife also enjoyed traveling to Arizona in the winter to visit family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Schurman of Sauk Centre; four children and eleven grandchildren, Jessica (Jon) Ferris of Mesa, Arizona and their children, Adam and Zach; Jay (Leah) Schurman of Detroit Lakes and their children, Macey, Griffin, Bennett and Addisyn; Jake (Catie) Schurman of Eden Prairie and their children, Nora and Owen; and Jenna (Ben) Clink of Sauk Centre and their children, Carter, Scarlett and Crosby; mother, Florence Schurman of Sauk Centre; and sister, Debbie Streese of Sauk Centre; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenny (Kathy) Leukam of Sauk Centre, Duane (Bonnie) Leukam of Sauk Centre, Don (Diane) Leukam of Sauk Centre, Randy (Terri) Leukam of Andover, and John Leukam (Wendi Wiese) of Andover; many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Virgil “Bud” Schurman on November 6, 1987; father and mother-in-law, Dillo and Monica Leukam; and sister-in-law, Sue Leukam.

Serving as casket bearers were Duane, Don, Randy, John, Kenny, Jr. and Rob Leukam. Cross bearer was Eva Leukam and scripture bearer was Kristie Moritz.

Virginia “Ginny” Keller M

a s s of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade for Virginia “Ginny” Keller, age 92, of Melrose and formerly of Regal, who passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at the Pinevilla Care Center in Melrose. Reverend David Grundman officiated. Burial was in the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Parish Cemetery in Regal.

Ginny was born on July 8, 1926 to August and Angeline (Jarnot) Wunderlich in Holdingford, Minnesota. She grew up on the south side of Pelican Lake and attended country schools in the area. To help support her family during the Great Depression, Ginny worked on various farms and jobs in the Twin Cities; the proceeds of which she sent home. She was united in marriage to Eddie Keller on September 7, 1946 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon.

Together, they moved to Regal and purchased a small farm, which they eventually turned into a 800 acre farming operation, all while raising 14 children at the same time. Ginny was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade and a charter member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Regal. She enjoyed giving of her time and talents by being a member of the Daughters of Isabella, the St. Rose of Lima Mission Group and the Council of Catholic Women. For 35 years, she also brought many children to Christ as a CCD Teacher.

Ginny was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She treasured the time that she was able to spend with her children and grandchildren. She always made it a point to find a period of free time during the day to do something “fun” with them. Ginny enjoyed fishing, hunting small game when she was younger, tending to

her vegetable and flower gardens and being outdoors. She was very creative and enjoyed doing various types of needle work, and painting birdhouses and ceramics. Ginny was a devout Catholic and was especially devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was the most God fearing, life loving, and giving person you could ever know. There was always room for one more person at her dinner table.

She is survived by her children, James (Cindy), Arthur (Brenda), Paul (Michelle), Marlene (Terry) Satterlund, Patrick (Deb), David (Ramona), Steven (Judy), Cathy Keller, Maryann Undis, Mathew (significant other, Paula), Harvey (Linda), and Bonnie (Paul) Madrigal; 25 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Kutzera; brother, Mathew Symalla and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Ginny is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eddie on June 21, 2000; children, Shirley and William; grandchildren, James Jr., Natascha, and Timothy; brotherin-law, Ted Kutzera; and sister-in-law, Jean Symalla.

Crash with Injuries: June 19, 2019: Driver of Jeep runs stop sign causing crash.

Lorene Meyer, 52, of Melrose was driving her 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee eastbound on County Road 176 and failed to stop for the posted stop sign at County Road 11. The Jeep struck a northbound 2014 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Jason Arnzen, 36, of Melrose.

Lorene and her front seat passenger, Thomas Meyer, 53, of Melrose, were transported by Melrose Ambulance to Melrose Hospital for medical treatment.

Arnzen was transported by a private party to the Melrose Hospital for medical treatment.

Thomas was later flown via Life Link air ambulance to the St. Cloud Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.

Freeport Fire assisted at the crash scene.

He continued his love of baseball and for several years was the manager for the Upsala Cardinals amateur baseball team. He enjoyed his cabin on Pine Lake in Upsala and spending time with his family. Jake was devoted to and was a natural in mentoring his children and grandchildren. With his wife, he routinely attended their school and sporting events. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala and the Laborers’ International Union of North America, local 563.

Jake is survived by his wife, Devota, Upsala, his two children, David (Lois) Nilson, Minneapolis, Lori (Duke) Jarnot, Rice, and two grandchildren, Sam and Abby. He is also survived by his sister, Kae (Tony) Sovich, St. Louis Park.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sisters, Roger (Martha) Nilson, Verna (Aymer) Nelson and Jane (Dan) Tolbert.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of James “Jake” Nilson, age 87 of Upsala was held Wednesday, June 19 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Jake died Friday, on his 87th birthday, at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Little Falls. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Upsala.

Jake was born June 14, 1932 in Upsala.

He grew up on the family dairy farm. As a boy he was a member of the 4H and showed prize winning Jersey cattle at state fairs. He loved playing high school basketball and baseball. After he graduated from the Upsala High School, he moved to Minneapolis where he started his career in the construction trades.

He married Devota Ohotto on June 18, 1955 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale. The couple moved back to the Upsala area in 1957 and Jake continued to work construction and

Dear Motor Medics, During my last oil change my shop told me I needed to change my cabin air filter. I did not know my car had a cabin air filter or even what one was until they showed me my dirty filter. They did not charge me much to replace it and my air seems to blow much stronger now. We had a Windstar van that gradually lost air flow from the vent too and I wonder if it had one that was clogged. My question is can they be changed at home by the average Joe and how often should they be changed?

They not only keep the dirt out of the inside of the vehicle, they keep the HVAC system components clean so they last longer. The filters are a great idea but until everyone knows if they have one and how to care for them, they can be a hindrance. If the filters are not changed you can lose airflow like you experienced and in the worst-case damage may occur to the system. When buying a vehicle ask if it is equipped with a cabin air filter and where it is located. Filters are available at most parts stores and can usually be changed at home in a short amount of time for a reasonable cost. Check the manual for filter replacement intervals.

I have lost some of the cooling capacity of my air conditioner and don’t want to spend the money to have a shop check it out. Am I safe to just go buy one of those kits and recharge the system myself so I can get some cool air, and is there any risk of damage to my vehicle if I do it wrong?

One of the most basic tools we use for testing is a set of gauges to read system pressures. We can tell a lot about the system just from the readings we take. If you attempt to charge a system without being able to read the system pressures on both low and high you run the risk of system damage. Just pumping in refrigerant is not the answer.

Yes, there are people who use the kits and have had good luck but we see many vehicles that have been charged with a do it yourself kit come to our shop for repairs that could have been cheaper if done professionally in the first place. Do some heavy research and ask plenty of questions before you just add refrigerant using a do it yourself kit.

Burtrum City June 3, 2019 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7:00 pm on Monday, June 3rd, 2019

by Mayor Ron Strassburg. Those in attendance included; Ronald Strassburg, Carrie Wiechmann, Deb VanHavermaet, Mitchell Bruggenthies, Sharon Erickson, and Kevin Rohde.

The meeting minutes from May 6th, 2019 were read and approved by a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies, seconded by Deb VanHavermaet, upon vote motion was carried and the minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved by a motion made by Kevin Rohde and seconded

by Mitchell Bruggenthies. The City Council then discussed outstanding/routine bills and upon a motion made by Kevin Rhode and seconded by Deb VanHavermaet, the bills were paid.

Regarding old business, no old business to discuss.

Next, in new business, Jon Archer, CPA from Schlenner Wenner & Co. was present to go over the completed compliance review of the city records. Motion was made for approval first by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Sharon Erickson.

Louie Thompson was present that he would like a building permit to build an 8x10 well shack, motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Kevin Rohde for approval.

The Burtrum Lions Park was vandalized over the weekend of June 1st, the shed door was broken into, and the port a pot was tipped over out of the platform area.

It has been decided to split the City of Burtrum Clerk and Treasurer position, so there is an opening for the Clerk position. All applicants that would like to apply should submit their interest, qualifications, and past history as soon as possible to PO Box 11, Burtrum, MN and attend attend the upcoming meeting on July 1st.

As there was no further topics to discuss the meeting was adjourned with a motion first made by Sharon Erickson and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, upon votes motion carried and the meeting was adjourned. The next City Council Meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 1st, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at the Burtrum Town Hall.

These are unapproved minutes Carrie Wiechmann, Burtrum City Clerk Grey Eagle City April 9, 2019 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 9th day of April 2019 in council chambers. Council mem-

bers present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Bryan Bye and Loren Fellbaum.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the minutes of the March 12, 2019 meeting with the following change, page 1704 last paragraph in the last sentence, change the word as to at. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the March 26, 2019 special meeting with the following changes: page 1706, first paragraph, third sentence, change present to absent. Under guests, change the name Thom to Tom. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Bryan Bye was on hand to discuss the revised size of the property needed for the new location of the west lift station. The size was adjusted from 80’x70’ to 55’x100’ but the new size will require a twenty foot temporary easement from the Walburn’s during the construction of the lift station. Based on this information, the Walburn’s submitted a written price for this piece to be firm at $15,000 plus the city would be responsible for all costs related to subdividing the parcel, all surveying costs and all closing costs.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to purchase the property from the Walburn’s for $15,000 plus all costs associated with the sale/ purchase, which includes the cost to subdivide the parcel, all surveying costs and all closing costs. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed the quote for spraying for all city property within the city except for the ball park areas for spring pre-emergence crabgrass and fertilizer for $395.42 from Terrain Aesthetics. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the spring spraying only for the quoted price from Terrain Aesthetics. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed.

1. The City of Sauk Centre has agreed to do street sweeping for the same price as last year, the first part

of May if the weather permits.

2. Will need to order Alum for the ponds.

3. A stone at Lakeview Cemetery was pushed over and will need to be set back up. City e m p l o y e e s will attempt to set it back in its place.

If they are unsuccessful then a quote will be obtained from Empire Memorial.

4. A letter will be sent to a cement plant regarding washing out the trucks at Trace Lake.

5. The engine heater on the plow truck isn’t working. Chico will look into it.

6. Residents need to be reminded that when taking bags of leaves to the ponds, please empty the bags and take them with you when you leave as they cannot be burned.

The council discussed employee wages for 2020. The Clerk is requesting more city paid health insurance in lieu of a wage increase. No decisions were made at this time.

The Clerk requested a change in office hours for Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. to 10:00 a.m.4:00 p.m. The later hours are seldom utilized but the Clerk would still like to accommodate a little later time.

As always, if the office hours do not meet the needs of our residents, an appointment for a time outside of regular office hours can be made.

The council approved the change if office hours as requested.

The Board of Equalization meeting will be held Thursday, April 11th at 1:00 p.m. in council chambers.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve Resolution No. 2019-04, A Resolution Approving an Offsite Gambling Permit for the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club.

A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The resolution is as follows: Resolution No. 2019-04 A Resolution Approving an Offsite Gambling Permit for the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club WHEREAS, the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club is the sole sponsor for the community GEMFest Celebration; and WHEREAS, the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club holds a raffle each year during the community GEMFest Celebration; and WHEREAS, the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club has a Charitable Gambling Permit issued from the State of Minnesota; and WHEREAS, the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club wishes to conduct the GEMFest Raffle in the Lions Park at the conclusion of the GEMFest Activities, NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of Grey Eagle, Minnesota: 1. The Mayor gave an update on a noxious weed meeting that he attended in Browerville.

Harland B. Hector, Sr., age 77 of Melrose passed away late Friday evening, June 14, 2019 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, MN. H a r l a n d Benght Hector was born on February 21 1942 in Sauk Centre, MN to John and Ruth (Olson) Hector. He attended Sauk Centre High School and after school started operating a dairy farm east of Osakis.

On October 6th 2002, he married Salina Hinnekamp in Melrose MN. In addition to farming, Harland also worked at Jennie-o Foods for 13 years before he retired. He was a member of the Sauk Valley Lutheran Church in rural Osakis, MN. Harland always enjoyed automobiles, he enjoyed going through parking lots and dealerships looking at different cars and trucks. His favorite hobby was going to the Alexandria Speedway and watching the race cars. He also enjoyed watching racing on TV. He took a lot of pride in his son. Other past times included deer hunting, snowmobiling, and collecting antiques. Traveling was another activity that he enjoyed, especially a once in a lifetime trip touring Alaska with his wife Salina. Harland was a soft hearted,

Funding for dairy farmers a big win this year

The Legislature came together in near-unanimous support of Minnesota’s dairy industry this past session by allocating $8 million to help producers defray the cost of enrolling in the new federal revenue protection program.

Sign-up began this week (June 17).

Those who dairy in Minnesota and whose milk production is under a set level, equivalent to about 750 cows, are eligible to sign up for the state assistance. It will be administered by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

A previous margin protection program left a bad taste with many producers as the cost of premiums out-weighed any benefit the program provided. This new version is supposedly better and should offer more protection than the previous plan. I would encourage all dairy folks to

at least check out this new program and utilize the financial assistance the state is providing for those who sign up for five years.

This being Dairy Month, we salute and say thanks to those involved in the dairy industry. They have been experiencing a prolonged period of depressed prices, one where the revenue generated by milk sales hasn’t fully covered the outof-pocket expenses involved in running a dairy operation. And for many, that means little if any revenue is left to allocate for the many hours of labor involved. Minnesota has lost far too many of our smaller operations, and that is having an impact on the area economy. It’s hoped the situation stabilizes and improves so we don’t continue seeing a 10 percent loss of dairy operations in our state on an annual basis.

Another little-known piece of legislation that we got passed this year dealt with decommissioned military vehicles that have been sold to private citizens by the federal government. Until now, they were sold for off-road use only. A veteran from the Albany area contacted me last year and told of purchasing such a vehicle and wanting to register it in Minnesota.

These are identical to what are known as Humvees, vehicles produced for civilian use. With the change in statute, if these vehicles are equipped with all the safety features as other vehicles, they may now be licensed.

There have been conflicting reports on just what the state changed in regard to conforming to federal tax code in relation to Section 179 expensing. Some have said that we are now in full compliance and can depreciate up to $1 million in the year of purchase. That’s not correct. We did conform to some definitions by allowing more capital purchases to qualify for fast depreciation, however, the $25,000 maximum and 20 percent the first year still remain. Check with your tax consultant for details but, generally speaking, it’s still going to take five years for a business to fully depreciate large capital purchases.

This isn’t the first time she has asked us for money. In the past, she has used money we’ve given her to buy alcohol for herself after telling us it was going to be used for the baby. She truly does need financial help, though. Can you give us some advice on handling this situation?

-Angela Dear Angela, Financially speaking, her problem sounds as much like a mismanagement of money as it is a lack of money. That, and she seems to have an issue with lying. If you’re determined to help this woman, you can put conditions on your help designed to improve her decisionmaking abilities and her life.

If someone is bold enough to ask for your money, you have every right to attach requirements to the money for their own good. One of two things will happen if you handle it this way. She’ll either graciously accept your conditions and welcome the help, or she’ll get angry and say you have no right interfering in her business. I’ve never had a problem helping people who have good hearts and just need a break. But if someone cops an attitude with me in a situation like this, I wouldn’t be breaking out my wallet anytime soon.

Teach her how to create and live off a budget, or help her enroll in a personal finance course, too. Right now, just handing her money is like giving a drunk a drink.

This whole situation is a lot bigger than helping someone with baby food and diapers. The answer to that is easy.

In this case, however, I’d probably give it to her in the form of a gift card. Some of those don’t allow alcohol purchases.

You could avoid that possibility, too, by getting things for the baby yourself and taking them to her.

In many cases, truly helping someone is a lot more work than just throwing money at them. Sometimes, you have to get down in their mess, get real with them, and walk with them.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Abraham Rejoiced: John 8:48-59 When Jesus tries to explain his eternal nature to us mere mortals we can get confused quite easily. It is not because it is so hard to comprehend that Father, Son and Holy Spirit are co-equal and co-eternal and all that. In John 8 Jesus was busy confusing the Jews with his timeless quality.

When God, who exists outside of time, enters time and creation we struggle to put words to it. Language struggles to capture this concept because our words place things either in the past, in the present or in the future. We don’t have a verb tense to span all time. God’s Holy name is a reference to his eternal character. Abraham eagerly awaited Jesus’ day. Abraham understood the fullness of God’s timeline.

The day when the Word would take on human form and complete salvation for all mankind.

As we try to define God we often struggle with the right words to do it accurately. When asking God for healing or blessings of some type and he doesn’t provide it we might conclude that God is not loving or not powerful enough. The reality is that God is far more than our

June 12, 2019: At 22:03 received a report of a missing person. The subject was later located in Sauk Lake submerged under water. The subject was transported to the Sauk Centre Hospital where lifesaving efforts were attempted. The subject was pronounced deceased due to his injuries. This incident is currently under investigation.

June 14, 2019: At 15:24 responded to a report of a two vehicle crash on County Rd 2 and County Rd 11 in Kandota Township. Theresa Veldkamp of Burtrum was westbound on County Rd 2 when she failed to stop at the stop sign at County Rd. 11 and struck a vehicle driven by Larry Roelike of Sauk Centre.

Veldkamp was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. Veldkamp was transported by the Sauk Centre Ambulance to the Sauk Centre Hospital and later flown

by Life-Link to St. Cloud Hospital. The Sauk Centre Fire Department and Sauk Centre Police Department assisted at the scene.

June 15, 2019: At 02:46 Quinton Lene (20) of rural Long Prairie was stopped on 192nd St. near Co. 11 for traffic violations. As a result of the traffic stop Lene was issued a citation for Underage Drinking and Driving.

June 16, 2019: At 00:32 Julio Rosario (23) of Long Prairie was stopped on HWY 71 near Co. 88 for speeding and poor driving conduct. As a result of the traffic stop Rosario was issued a citation for not having a MN Driver’s License.

June 17, 2019: At 09:47 received a report of some damage to property that occurred at the Grey Eagle Lions Park at 318 Maple St. North in Grey Eagle. The City of Grey Eagle reports that between the afternoon of 06-14-2019 and 06-17-2019, suspects rode an ATV into a ditch at the park and struck a T-post and water shutoff valve, causing minor damage. The suspects also left multiple ruts in the area. If you have information regarding this incident, please call the TCSO at 1-800794-5733. The incident is currently under investigation.

Abraham’s understanding of God was as limited as ours but he was wise enough to rejoice in Jesus’ coming day.

Trinitarian faith takes all the knowledge, all the understanding we could have about God and it stops, it sees enough of what God has done for us and it simply rejoices. It sees a glimpse of the wonder and glory and fullness of God’s salvation and that is enough to begin the journey of faith. Abraham rejoiced knowing that he was justified through faith in the promised

one.

There is far more to know about God and far more to understand. The Athanasian Creed used commonly on Trinity Sunday does a good job not limiting who God it but is also very specific in what God has done for us in Jesus. The day of Jesus is worth rejoicing over even if we don’t understand it all.
