Get results when you complain -By Harvey Mackay

Once the famous Chicago m e r c h a n t Marshall Field was walking through his Chicago store and heard one of his clerks arguing with a customer.

“What are you doing?” he asked the clerk.

“I’m settling a customer complaint,” said the clerk.

“No, you’re not,” said Field. “Give the customer what she wants.”

Is the customer always right? If you are a business owner, the answer most always is yes. Otherwise, they aren’t customers. They are people who do business with someone else.

Years ago I saw a study for Travelers Insurance that showed persuading people to complain could be, in fact, the best business move a company could make.

Only 9 percent of the noncomplainers with a gripe involving $100 or more would buy from the company again.

On the other hand, when people did complain and their problems were resolved quickly, an impressive 82 percent would buy again.

I have a philosophy about customers – ours or anyone else’s. A customer who has a good experience with a company will tell five other people. But a customer who has a bad experience will tell 15 other people, and with social media today it can become tens of thousands.

So anything I can do to decrease the bad while increasing the good is right at the top of my agenda.

Part of that philosophy assumes that you will get a second chance. If you get that chance, don’t mess it up. You may be looking at the best customer you’ve ever imagined.

Customers can also be your best teachers. True, you often learn a lesson the hard way. But it’s an education in Customer Service 101 that you won’t learn in any school.

Stew Leonard, founder of a famous chain of supermarkets in Connecticut and New York, said: “Customers who complain are your friends because they are giving you a chance to improve instead of just walking away.”

No one likes to hear that they have done a lousy job, but criticism from customers is more valuable than praise.

You want your customers to tell you when you screwed up, so that you can take care of the problem and take steps to insure that it doesn’t happen again – to them or anyone else. If they don’t

tell you, they will walk away and they’ll never come back. Worse, you are likely to alienate someone else in the future by doing exactly the same thing.

To paraphrase a famous line, ask not what your customer can do for you, ask what you can do for your customer.

Now put the shoe on the other foot.

Think like a customer. Stop to consider whether your own customers are receiving fair treatment.

When you have a complaint, you want it addressed quickly and fairly.

When you approach the problem from the customer’s side, the view is quite different.

As consumers ourselves, we should be able to expect a satisfactory result.

When you don’t get what you paid for, agree to, contract for, or reasonably should expect, you should look for a resolution to the problem. And you should give the vendor the opportunity to fix it. Isn’t that what you would want your customers to do? Remember, most reputable companies want to make the customer happy.

If customer service can’t help you, ask to speak with a manager next.

• Target where to take your complaint next. Don’t just call headquarters and voice your complaint to the receptionist.

Find out who has the authority to address your complaint.

• Control your emotions. When you’re overwhelmed with frustration, vent your anger in a letter – but wait a few days to decide whether to send or rewrite it. Humorous complaint letters are more likely to get noticed and acted upon. Also, remember to single out those employees who tried to help. Praise can be just as effective as criticism.

• Keep copies of all correspondence.

A good record of your attempts to resolve the problem can be helpful if you ultimately need to take legal action.

Swanville High School Athletes of the Month

Obituary Isidore “Izzy” Richard Hartung

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Isidore “Izzy” Richard Hartung, age 48 was held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Father Cletus Connors, OSB officiated and burial took place following mass in the parish cemetery.

Izzy passed away on Saturday evening at home with family by his side.

Izzy was born on July 25, 1965 to Anthony and Ann Marie (Pick) Hartung in Melrose, MN. He graduated from Albany High School in 1984. He continued farming on the home farm with his parents until 1997. He worked at various other jobs until

reaching his destination of working with pride at Tom and Rita Middendorf Dairy for 11 years, until health issues arose.

Izzy was a member of the St. Anthony Church in St. Anthony, MN and was a member of Holy Names Society. He enjoyed helping others and spending time on the farms. He also enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his siblings, Gerald (Bernice) Hartung, Freeport; Kenneth (Peggy) Hartung, Freeport; Mary Jane (Gerry) Boeckermann, Freeport; Doris (John) Leen, Sauk Centre; Gene (JoAnn) Hartung, Melrose; Renee (Greg) Wensmann, Bowlus; LeRoy (Diane) Hartung, Avon; Lillian (John) Arnzen, St. Rosa; Darlene (Glen) Engelmeyer, St. Rosa; Melvin Hartung, Foreston; Geri Ann (Jeff) Fleischhacker, St. Rosa and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Ann Marie, sister, Janet Hartung and infant sister, Bernadette.

Zigan Dairy to Host U of MN Extension Dairy Tour in Todd County

By Brenda Miller, University of Minnesota Extension Zigan Dairy of Long Prairie will host the 2014 Todd County Dairy Tour on Tuesday, June 24th from 10:30 am -1:00 pm. Zigan Dairy is located at 22550 State Hwy. 287 Long Prairie, MN. This is about 2 miles south of Long Prairie on State Hwy. 287. Farm is on the east side of the road. Watch for signs.

This tour will focus on freestall barn design, robotic technology, and manure handling facilities before the cows move

To promote good herd health practices when visiting farms, please wear clothes that have been washed and not worn in other livestock facilities since washing. Plastic boots will be provided.

He was one of the kids the team needed to look for as a leader. He has done just that, he has not only been Tyler Evans one of our best players but one of our team leaders. “The Swanville High School May Track Athletes of the Month are Stephanie Koetter and Sam Mettler. Stephanie, a junior, is a high jumper. She was injured throughout April, but was able to jump in May, never Stephanie Koetter finishing below third in a meet.

She advanced to the section 6A meet in the high jump with a jump of 4’10” and has jumped as high as 5’0” this year.

Sam, a sophomore, is a jackof-all trades. He has competed in the high jump, triple jump, discus, 400,800, 1600, 4x800 relay, and 4x400 relay throughout the season. Sam advanced to the section 6A track meet in the 800 with a time of Sam Mettler 2:15.” - Coach Pete Swisher

Interstate 94 reduced to single lane near Melrose June 23–25 Motorists may encounter slow traffic and delays as westbound I-94 at the Sauk River bridge west of Melrose is reduced to a single lane beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, June 23. All lanes of westbound I-94 will open by 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 25.

The lane closures west of Melrose were originally scheduled June 16–19.

While the June 16 lane closure occurred as planned, the closures originally scheduled June 17–19 were rescheduled to June 23–25.

The closures are needed as crews perform maintenance and repairs on the westbound I-94 bridge spanning the Sauk River.

The Merciful Father -By Sheila Ripplinger

We are familiar with the story that Jesus told in Luke 15, known as ‘The Prodigal Son’. We could presume by the telling of this story that this son was ungrateful, unsatisfied, self-centered, and disrespectful. He said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’

The father granted his son’s request, divided his property, and gave his son what he had demanded. The son shortly thereafter left with his wealth to a distant country. He squandered his wealth on wild living and ended up with the pigs.

To the Jewish people, pigs were unclean animals, so this was most certainly hitting the bottom for this son.

The father must have been heartbroken when his son took his inheritance and left home. He most likely warned his son about the dangers that were out there waiting for him. But the father, in his loving kindness and mercy, knew he had to let him go.

While his son was away, I am certain that this father prayed and watched every day as he waited in expectancy for his son to return. Thankfully, the son came to his senses, realizing and admitting that he had sinned against heaven and against his father. He decided to head back home, willing to be a hired hand.

From a distance, his father saw him coming and was filled with compassion for him. He ran to his son, who was humbled, dirty, and probably smelled bad, threw his arms around him, kissed him and lovingly welcomed him back!

The son, knowing he did not deserve this treatment because of all he had done

wrong, sincerely repented by saying, ‘I am no longer worthy to be your son.’

The father was so thrilled to have his son back that he had his servants bring his son the best robe, a ring for his finger, and sandals to put on his feet. He also put on a feast to celebrate exclaiming, ‘This son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and now he is found!’

Our Heavenly Father treats us this same way. He lets us make our own choices, that sometimes land us in the pigpens of this world. God, like his son’s father, waits for us to ‘come to our senses’ and humbly and sincerely repent and return to Him. He takes us back with open arms when we come towards Him in humility and sorrow over our sinful behaviors that we have indulged in that make us so dirty.

Maybe someone whom we love has betrayed us, hurt us, and left us brokenhearted because they have chosen the path of wild living? Are we watching in hopeful expectation every day for them to come back? Are we fervently praying for them while they are lost and away?

Will we, like this merciful father, be filled with compassion, run to greet them with arms open wide when we see them humbly returning home? Will we show them mercy?

James 2:13~ Judgement without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgement!

Upsala Jr. High May Student of the Month Anna Boeckermann has been named the Upsala Junior High School Student of the Month for May. Anna is the daughter of Pete and Joan Boeckermann, and the sister of Gretchen, Jon, David, Amanda, Holly, Hope, Bethany, Zac, and Noah.

Anna participates in basketball and volleyball. Anna has been named a member of the “B” Honor Roll. Outside of school, Anna works as a babysitter for many families.

cause they have fun while learning. She feels volleyball was the most valuable activity because she was able to spend time with her friends and learn how to work as a member of a team. She never gave up on herself or her team.”

Dear Dave, My current employer offers a regular 401(k) and a Roth 401(k). I’ve got several years before I retire, so which one should I choose?

If you put your money into a Roth 401(k), and by retirement age there’s $1 million in there, that money is yours tax-free.

By comparison, if it’s in a regular 401(k), you’ll pay taxes on that $1 million, which will come out to about $300,000—maybe $400,000 at the rate things are going now. You’ll lose 30 to 40 percent of your money.

There are two issues here. One, as the executor you have to decide what’s best for the estate. Number two, do any of the other heirs want these things? I wouldn’t want them, I can tell you that. I realize they’re basically free things—all you have to do is pay the maintenance fees—but by the time you do that, you probably could’ve gone somewhere else. For that kind of money, you can stay in some pretty nice spots and not have the ongoing liability.

Right now, the estate has the responsibility for the maintenance fees.

I would call the timeshares and tell them the estate isn’t going to keep them, and that you’re going to deed them back to the companies. The way I look at it, you can have a lot of fun for $1,500 a year.

You can go where you want, when you want. You’re not roped into a specific place and date. Part of the appeal of getting away is being able to go where you like at a time that’s right for you.

I understand there may be some sentimental value attached to these, Joe. But timeshares are a horrid, inconvenient product. My sentiment would be, “I’m out of here!”

Updating Status of some interesting ‘Other’ Bills

To the surprise of many, Gov. Mark Dayton vetoed a bill after the session ended that had drawn strong bipartisan support from both the House and Senate. It was legislation that put limits on Internet lottery sales, including having tickets available at gas pumps. It had drawn the ire of several groups when the folks who run the lottery went ahead and expanded Internet sales without getting specific approval from the Legislature. One representative said he could envision a scene at a busy service station, with cars backed up waiting to put in gas, and those at the pumps busy purchasing lottery tickets.

I’m pretty sure this topic will be revisited.

Among the many bills passed by the Legislature this past session were several that didn’t garner much attention.

One example is legislation that bans the use of lead in wheel weights, those small pieces of metal attached to tires and wheels to improve their balance and run more smoothly. The bill doesn’t take effect for six months to allow tire repair shops to use up the supply of existing LATE MODEL CARS & TRUCKS

lead weights before switching to other wheel weights that are not made of lead.

You may recall the House of Representatives passed legislation that put limits on the number of so-called “pay day loans” residents could take out. Citing the high cost of such transactions, the House bill placed an annual limit on such loans at four. I thought the bill was not written properly as it did little to actually lower the cost of such loans.

When similar legislation was taken up in the Senate, the limit on the number of loans that could be taken out in a year’s time was increased to ten. The bill died in the final days of session when time ran out and the two bills could not be reconciled.

On the energy front, investor-owned utilities (IOU’s) were mandated to come up with a discount rate for charging electric cars during low electric-demand periods, such as overnight. A study will also be undertaken that looks at the cost of converting large propane customers to natural gas. It appears that some of this is already being done in parts of Stearns County with new gas lines being laid that will serve major users such as turkey barns and large corn drying facilities.

With some limitations such as the size of samples, those who allow customers to sample their wares will not have to follow state food handling laws. A special exemption was also allowed for chili cook-offs.

On the education front, the so-called PSEO “gag rule” was eliminated. PSEO is the state program that pays high school students’ tuition costs when enrolled in college or technical school classes.

Up until now, counselors and others couldn’t inform students of the financial savings to families when students signed up for such programs. Now, that information can be given to prospective students and their parents. My concern with the legislation is that students may now choose to take PSEO classes based solely on financial implications when, for a variety of other reasons, they may not be ready to take classes on a college campus, for example.

And, in an example of political correctness, we no longer have Asian carp in Minnesota. We now call them “invasive” carp.

He goes before God with confidence and conviction - not fearing what God may uncover in his heart. “Hear me, O Lord - my plea is just and my prayer does not rise from deceitful lips.” Most of us, when we go to God in prayer, begin with a plea for forgiveness, knowing that our lives fall short of God’s expectations and our best efforts.

David, in this Psalm, had no fear of God. He said that “You, God, have probed my heart, examined me at night, have tested me and found no evil plans within me!” That’s boldness that we can actually see! Few of us would stand before God and make such statements!

How was it that David could ask God to put him under His magnifying glass and have no fear? Was he a favorite of God’s? Did he do something that gave him special privileges in God’s sight?

Or was he so aware of God’s love, mercy and grace that he could stand before God and say, “Judge me! I’ve been cleansed of my sin!”

David prayed for God’s presence to be with him and His eyes to be upon him.

And we, as David, can make that same claim! Not because we have a clear conscience or a just plea. Not because God has examined and found us faultless.

We can ask for God’s presence and His favors because we have a Savior Who cleanses us from all unrighteousness and Who pleads our cause before His Father. “In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence,” said Paul.

Michele Norris, author, National Public Radio host and special correspondent, delivered the keynote address during the 99th annual commencement. Erin Wissler, a senior chemistry major from Indianapolis, Indiana, was the student commencement speaker selected by this year’s senior class.

During the ceremony, CSB President MaryAnn Baenninger received an honorary degree from the college in recognition of her 10 years leading CSB. The 2014 CSB graduating class includes 495 undergraduate women. When combined with Saint John’s University’s 454 undergraduate men, this year’s combined undergraduate graduating class totals 949, the second-largest combined class in the colleges’ history.

Burnhamville Township May 27, 2014 These are unapproved minutes.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held May 27, 2014 at Burtrum Community Center.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit.

Members present include Supervisors: Louis Thompson, Mike Berscheit and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Ervin Muellner and Ervin Herdering.

Sup. Thompson made a motion to approve the minutes from the regular meeting of April 29, 2014. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Correspondence included letters from planning and zoning, election judge training, and the bank concerning security change.

Also township received notices from township association about summer training and that a form was never received.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the contract for ditch mowing and brush cutting presented by Ervin Muellner. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 4951 through 4963: Rev. $861.26; R&B $17,492.51. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

In the road report the dust control procedures were discussed.

Contractor will fill in some areas with dust control between several owners spraying to make for easier grading and to hold the gravel in place better. Duckweed Drive was

discussed and the board decided not to cut down hill, but to add more signs instead. Chairman will consult with county engineer to decide how best to design fixing 210th Street now that township has clearance from property owners.

The annual township clean-up day went well with three very full dumpsters.

The supervisors divided up the township to do weed inspection in June.

Treasurer’s report showed a

balance of $50,686.42. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:42 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on June 24, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Swanville Sr. High May Student of the Month

Senior Corey Poland has been chosen as the Swanville May Student of the Month for grades 10-12. He is the son of Tim and Jen Poland.

Char Bzdok, Science teacher states “I have been Corey’s science teacher for the last four years. In this time Corey has been an excellent student who always takes his studies seriously. Corey has challenged himself by taking the upper level science courses like chemistry, physics and human anatomy. Not only is Corey an excellent student, he is a very nice young man who is upbeat and easy to talk to. His peers look up to him also because he is very involved in the community and will always lend a helping hand.”

Corey enjoys spending time with his friends or his girlfriend. Other hobbies include reading, sleeping, watching movies-both at home and at the drive-in, playing games. Corey is also working on learning to play the guitar. His future plans are to attend Central Lakes College and major in some aspect of forensic science.

enthusiastic part of the theater department, participating in many productions since eighth grade. He has also been in band since beginning junior high. Corey has served on the student council since his freshman year. He was inducted into the National Honor Society this year. Corey is a member of the track team, joining as a freshman and competing ever since.

“I am very happy to have been Corey Poland’s teacher for the past four years.

He is always courteous and very helpful to me as a teacher. He is my teacher’s assistant and is good at keeping me in order. He is good at helping underclassmen with their calculators.

Corey is taking the college algebra and pre-calculus classes for college credit along with several other college classes while he is still in high school. This isn’t always easy with extra-curricular and outside work activities and Corey will have 33 college credits done before he graduates from high school. Students who have this many college courses need to know how to work independently and budget their time to get everything completed.

I know Corey will succeed at Central Lakes College in the fall,” adds Margaret Peterson, Math instructor.

Corey was nominated for both the ExCel and AAA awards. He has lettered multiple times in track and theatre. He is consistently on the Honor roll and has been nominated for top performer nominations in theatre multiple times.

Corey’s can-do attitude does not just stay in school. He helps frequently with Ruby’s Pantry and Share-A-Meal. He has also volunteered his time for ditch cleanup, the Paint-A-Thon and remodeling at Great River Arts Association.

“Stay active in school and community activities, but take time for yourself also,” is his advice for fellow classmates.

Swanville Jr. High May Student of the Month Seventh grader Gage VanRisseghem has been chosen as the Swanville Schools May Student of the Month for grades 7-9. He is the son of Brent and Angie VanRisseghem.

“Gage has been an enjoyable student to work with this year.

He is a very conscientious student who works very hard to always do his best work,”states Math teacher Liza Hasse. She adds, “Gage will take the time to learn from his mistakes and seek help when he struggles with a concept. Gage stands out from his class in the aspect that he does what he feels is right no matter what his peers are doing.

Gage is very respectful towards staff and his peers. Gage is very deserving of this award and I look forward to working with him more in the future.”

involvement in school activities, Brooke is a member of the local 4-H club and has helped out with the elementary volleyball and basketball programs.

Brooke’s favorite class is College Algebra because, “Mrs. Hovland makes the class fun!” She feels that Accounting is her most valuable class because, “I can use what I learn in my everyday life.” Mr. Jim Drill, Brooke’s Track coach states, “Brooke Westrich is a true role model for all athletes on and off the field. I have had the pleasure of coaching Brooke in USA track for the last five years. She has remarkable athletic ability, however, she also has the drive to push herself to the next level every day.

Gage was instrumental in the “Sponsor a Stripe” committee, chairing the campaign to get two new zebras for the Pine Grove Zoo. Marv Poegel, Physical Education instructor adds, “Gage has a quiet and responsible manner about him. Whenever I see him in the hall or in a different classroom he always goes out of his way to make sure he acknowledges me. He is careful not to hurt anyone’s feelings. He has a quick wit and a dry sense of humor.

If you are not listening closely his dry sense of humor might pass you by. Gage is a self-motivated and self-disciplined young man, these qualities will only grow stronger as he matures. I always enjoy writing positive articles for a person of his nature. Congratulations to Gage on this nice honor. It is evident that Gage has learned from family and school to always strive towards doing his best.

2014 Caramel Roll Ride

By Pam Williquette The 2014 Caramel Roll Ride was the windiness, rainiest so far. Though the numbers were drastically down, supporters and bicycle enthusiasts ventured out anyway. Spots of their ride out was rainy but they returned with dry skies before the second surge of rain arrived.

There were free caramel rolls in Melrose,

Freeport, Albany, Avon, St. Joseph, Holdingford, and Bowlus. Plus Bowlus served up grilled brats and the Holdingford Lions Club sold food as well.

Hence, this weeks Lady Slipper Ride will hopefully re-coop some of the moneys that would’ve came in had the weather been more promising. We are so blessed to have spots along the trail between Avon and Albany where we can view the state flower. People can register online for Saturday’s event or they can register right at the Avon trail-head between 8:00-10:00 a.m. The ride coordinates with Spunk Days so there are lots of things to enjoy in the area. People can see the Avon website for specifics.

The rides bring in bicyclists from throughout the state so it is good for our small communities.

This year Woe-B-Gone eBikes are on site for people to view and ask questions or even rent.

If they want to reserve an eBike to ride on the trail they can call the Albany Shop at 320-420-2027 at least the day before the ride so the bikes are inspected and ready to go.

Fawns born in May: Leave them alone Newborn fawns may appear abandoned and fragile but their best chance for survival comes when people leave them alone – especially in spring, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said.

“While a new fawn may appear helpless, it’s important to keep your distance and not interfere with the doe’s natural instinct for raising its young,” said Jeff Lightfoot, DNR northeast regional wildlife manager. “Leave fawns alone and let wildlife remain wild.”

Deer rear their offspring differently than humans. Most fawns are born in May and within hours of birth the fawn is led to a secluded spot so it can nurse. With a full stomach, the fawn is content to lie down and rest. If the doe has twins, it will hide the second fawn up to 200 feet away. Then the doe leaves to feed and rest herself, out of sight but within earshot.

In four or five hours, the doe will return to feed the fawns and take them to a new hiding place. Deer follow this pattern for two to three weeks, and only then – when fawns are strong enough to outrun predators – do the young travel much with their mother.

Deer have evolved a number of special adaptations that make this approach to fawn rearing successful. Fawns have almost no odor so predators are less likely to smell them. Their white spotted coats provide camouflage when they are lying on the forest floor. For the first week of life, frightened fawns instinctively freeze, making full use of their protective coloration.

away. A deer’s primary protection from predators is its great speed. Newborn fawns are not fast enough to outdistance predators so they must depend on their ability to hide for protection.

Although these adaptations work well against predators, they don’t work very well with people. For the first few weeks, a fawn’s curiosity may entice it to approach a person who comes upon it.

What’s the right way to handle an encounter with a fawn? Never try to catch it. If it’s hiding, admire it for a moment and then quietly walk away. If the fawn tries to follow, gently push on its shoulders until it lies down and then walk away.

“Leaving fawns alone gives them the best chance for survival,” Lightfoot said. “Even most orphaned fawns are best suited to survive without human intervention.”

Never feed or place a collar on a fawn or other wild animal. Collaring a wild animal sets it apart from other wild animals, encourages habituation to people and increases the likelihood for harm to the animal.

Conditioning any wild animal to seek humanprovided food can cause it to stop seeking natural food sources. Feeding deer can be a problem. Feeding encourages the transmission of animal disease such as chronic wasting disease, which can be spread through saliva when multiple deer eat from the same food source such as feeders or piles of feed left on the ground. Feeding deer can concentrate animals in feeding areas which makes them more susceptible to predation, vehicle collisions or other unwanted human interactions. What begins as a good intention to help the animal ultimately promotes disease and lessens the animal’s ability to survive independently.

“Not all animals survive, and some mortality is a natural occurrence. If you have a question about an interaction with a wild animal, contact your local DNR area wildlife office for suggestions,” said Lightfoot. “In most cases, letting nature take its course is the best advice.”
