Sales are critical to a company’s success -By Harvey Mackay “I’m starving, and it’s Dave’s fault,” a manager complained to his assistant.

“What did Dave do now?” the assistant asked.

“I asked him to pick up a sandwich for me before he returned from lunch,” the boss replied.

“He’s over there at his computer, so where’s my sandwich?”

Just then Dave ran into the boss’s office and said, “You’ll never guess what happened to me at lunch today. I was at that little bistro on Main Street, when who should walk in but the president of ABC company that we pitched last week. There wasn’t an empty table in the whole place, so I waved him over and invited him to join me.”

Dave went on: “I jumped on the opportunity to remind him why he should consider working with us – and he agreed!

He wrote me a check for the retainer.

I raced back here and just worked up the preliminary projections for the new account.”

“Did you remember to pick up that sandwich for me?” the boss asked.

Dave blinked and looked confused.

“Huh?” As a salesman, when I hear stories like this I cringe. There are no jobs unless someone brings the business in. Sales are the lifeblood of any company, and it’s amazing how many people don’t get this point. Sales are even more important today during this pandemic.

Don’t get me wrong; everyone is important, but sales are critical to a company’s success. I hammer away at this concept repeatedly. At our company, we like to say that all our employees are in sales because they are selling our company every day.

Career success often depends on your ability to sell a product, a service or an idea. No matter what field you’re in, you’ll sell better by remembering these key pieces of expert sales wisdom: • Do your research. Whether you’re selling a book or trying to get a job, start by learning as much as you can about your industry and the people in it. The more you know, the better you’ll be able to present your product when the time comes.

• Profile your buyers. Your product should fill a defined need. Don’t start selling before you understand your customer’s mindset. First analyze the kind of people who might benefit from what you have to offer. Do they already use something similar? Do they need to be educated about what you can do for them?

Find out where they are so you can target your sales efforts effectively.

• Tailor your approach to match individual buyers, rather than taking a

one-size-fits-all attitude. Spend some time getting to know their personal priorities and professional preferences, and what they’re looking for when they consider products like yours. You’ll do a better job of selling to them if you focus on satisfying their requirements instead of yours.

• Listen more than you talk. Don’t think of sales as the art of pressuring a reluctant customer into buying something he or she doesn’t want. You’ll get better results by asking questions about your prospect’s problems and really listening to his or her needs. Then you’ll be better able to position yourself effectively.

• Follow up. Persistence pays. Don’t make a pest of yourself, but check in regularly with your customers and prospects to find out what they need. You don’t want them to forget about you.

• Develop your sense of humor.

You don’t have to memorize a string of stale jokes, but you should learn how to see the humor in most situations. If you can make a customer smile, your job is halfway complete.

• Stop selling, and let them buy. Most people like to buy things, but dislike being pushed into a purchase. Don’t be overly aggressive with your idea. Be ready to answer questions, and present your idea as an opportunity.

• Manage your time wisely. Keep track of how much time you spend on your sales process. Identify the activities with the greatest potential, and maximize those while delegating or cutting down on Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Hazards Kids today just don’t realize how much different our upbringing was from the young people of today. By today’s accepted standards, we had it pretty tough.

This applied to not only our expected behaviors, respect for others, but also to the development of work habits.

Most of us were raised having respect for the potential pain to our bottoms to help us remember that certain actions would not be accepted. These loving reminders were given not only by parents and grandparents, but also by teachers and religious leaders. Everyone older than us seemed to have the ability to physically remind us of our misbehavior. There were some psychological concerns when the teacher or preacher let our parents know that we had acted improperly. This threat seemed to cause the parents to be even more concerned about our behavior. These reminders were usually not forgotten.

Some of us are familiar with the phrases, “eat what’s been put on your plate” or “quit crying or I’ll give you something to cry about.” These statements seemed to be commonplace in our past.

If we have had the opportunity to hear younger individuals say “I don’t eat vegetables” or the parents say I can’t serve that because the kids won’t eat it, the parents shouldn’t complain because they raised their kids allowing them to be that way.

We also remember the playground equipment being much less safe than the equipment is today. We were just happy that we had playground equipment, even though it was somewhat rusty and

dangerous. The legs of the swing set would begin to leave the ground if the swings in unison swung high enough together.

Those metal seats would create a serious mark on your forehead if it touched your forehead, whether occupied or not. Today they are usually made of rubber and the set is more firmly set in the ground. The slippery slide had a ladder which could easily allow a fall and the slide had a metal piece on the side, which caused your hand to be injured. Today slides are made of plastic, easier on the hand. The monkey bars were metal and falls from upper bars were dangerous. We grew up thinking that these dangers were simply part of life. If we were injured or narrowly escaped injury, we certainly avoided the possibility of another potential injury.

We also lived with hazardous situations, some that we created ourselves and others that were just part of our environment. It seemed that anything painted was coated with hazardous lead paint. We all drank from the same dipper in the same water pail. In later years we drank from the water hose. We skied being pulled by ropes behind the car. We all rode in the bed on the back of the pickup.

We rode bicycles without helmets. We were constantly exposed to second hand smoke, whether at home, in the car or at any public gathering. We went to school in the winter without caps, coats or boots.

We didn’t wear seat belts, we didn’t have air bags and learned to respect suicide doors. We jumped off of the silo room roof, because it was only about nine feet

any that don’t add value. Look for ways to use your time more efficiently every single day.

• Deal with rejection. No one makes every sale. Rejection is a part of life. Deal with it and move on.

Dear Andrew, I don’t really have a rule, or percentage, for how much you should save toward a college fund. If you’re following the Baby Steps, I recommend getting 15 percent of your income going toward retirement before saving for college. After you’ve got your retirement savings rolling, put what you can, based on your own unique situation, toward college funding.

If you’ve got teenagers in the house, you need to get serious about college funding soon—like right now. There’s no rush if they’re toddlers, but you might want to start looking at things like a 529 or an ESA (Education Savings Account).

The thing is, there are just too many variables, the main one being the ages of the kids, to set a strict percentage. You’ve also got to consider things like where you’re thinking about them going to school, how much you want to save up, and other factors.

Getting $1,000 in the bank as a starter emergency fund is Baby Step 1. Next, pay off all your debts from smallest to largest— except for your home—using the debt snowball method. That’s Baby Step 2. It’s time then to revisit your emergency fund, and bulk it up to a full three to six months of expenses in Baby Step 3.

Now, it’s time to really start thinking about your future and retirement. In Baby Step 4, take 15 percent of your gross household income and start investing it for retirement. Start with your company’s 401(k) plan, up to the full employer match.

Then, invest the rest into Roth IRAs. One for you, and one for your spouse, if you’re married.

Here’s the thing, Nick. Investing becomes easy at this point, because you’ve freed up your income. And that’s the most important wealth-building tool you have!

Todd J. Walker

Todd J. Walker, 63 year old resident of Burtrum, MN, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2020, in Burtrum, MN. A celebration of life will be held for Todd on Friday, June 19, 2020, at the Burtrum Community Center in Burtrum, MN, from 3-8 P.M. Todd Jeffrey Walker was born July 25, 1956 in Hennepin County, Minnesota to the late Glady and Lionel Brown. His dad passed away when Todd was 2 and Glady then moved her children up to Grey Eagle area and married Dave Walker. Todd was united in marriage to Cindy Walker, they resided in Burtrum and raised two children. They later separated and Todd has been with his long term girlfriend of 15 years, Teri Fellegy.

Todd went to basic training June 17, 1975 and stayed in for 6 years. He then started working for Tony Towel doing drywall and has done drywall ever since. He had his own business, “Walker’s Drywall” for many years. He worked for Donlar Construction up until he retired last fall. Dad loved doing any outdoor activity; from fishing, hunting, 4 wheeling, and mud running. Swap meets, auctions, car shows were his thing to do along with hanging out with family and friends. He was always out for a good time and making everyone else around him have a good time also. No matter how upset you were he always had a way of making you smile. He was always there for you, it might of been a day or two later but he always called or showed up when we needed him.

We truly are going to miss his contagious happiness and smiles. He was one of a kind.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Shannon (Bill) Johnson, Jeff (Halley) Walker; grandchildren, RyAnn, Jerricka, Ellie and Hannah; his girlfriend, Teri Fellegy, his bonus children and grandchildren, Stacy, Eric, Kristi, Nicole, Dylan, Riley, Bennett, Grayson, Mallory, Jackson; dad, Dave Walker; brothers and sisters, Debbie (Alcuin) Wolbeck, Roxy Pfaff, Davie (Laurie) Walker, Johnny (Tanya) Walker; many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Tom passed away on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Pastor Greggrey A. Valentine will officiate.

Burial will take place at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Visitation will take place one hour prior to services on Thursday at the Community Country Church in Holdingford.

Tom was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Bernard and Lucille (Yurczyk) Huls.

He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps and was a Vietnam Veteran.

He worked as a heavy machine operator for the IUOE Local 49 all of his life. Tom was a member of the St. Stephen Legion Post #221.

He enjoyed ice fishing, yard work, and baseball. Tom also loved the time spent with his family.

Tom is survived by his children, Lisa (Jeff) Stoermann of Holdingford, Kris (Kyle) Darnall of St. Cloud, Tracy (Rick) Winters of Sartell, Amanda (Terry) Pogatchnik of Rice, Matt (Stacy) of Holdingford, Nate (Steph) of Spring Hill, KS, Megan (Steve Lamser) Huls, St. Stephen; 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; former wife, Mary Jo; brothers and sisters, Jane (Jack) Opatz of St. Wendel, Daniel (Charolette) of Holdingford, Bernard (Tracy) of Holdingford, Mary Lou (George) Fiedler of St. Stephen, John (Ruth Djonne) of St. Wendel, and Lori (Joe) Westbrock of Shoreview; and many nieces and nephews.

Maya Ayala

Celebration of Life was held Saturday, June 13, 2020 at Lake Charlotte, Long Prairie for Maya Ayala, age 18, who passed away June 6, 2020.

Maya Laina Ayala was born on November 24, 2001 to Ashley Ayala and Rigoberto Ayala. From the moment she was born, she brought joy and happiness to everyone who knew her. She always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye.

She loved to sing, dance, and listen to music.

Maya also loved gymnastics and loved to swim. She was artistic in many ways, whether it be her makeup, her drawings, or her DIY projects. Her heart was filled with so much love for her family and friends. When she was young, she got the opportunity to go with her dad to visit her family in Mexico and California. Though her life here on earth was way too short, she will always be remembered as being bubbly, energetic, happy and carefree.

Maya is survived by her mother, Ashley Ayala, her father, Rigoberto Ayala, brothers: Damian, Carson, and Brycen. Grandparents, Arvin and Cindy Wardien, Grandmother, Evangelina Zamora, special friend Nick and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Maya’s life will continue through the six people she saved by donating her organs.

Linda Louise Hines

Linda Louise Hines, 53 passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2020 at her home in rural Long Prairie, MN. Her family has chosen to have a private Celebration of Life.

L i n d a Lackmann was born to Richard and Deanna Lackmann (Gustafson) in Browerville. She graduated from Long Prairie High School.

She married Gerald “Jerry” Hines on July 6, 1985 at the United Methodist Church in Long Prairie. They started their lives together on the farm where Linda was raised. She had a passion for cooking, which was appreciated at Dick & Dees Diner, Pier 71 and Little Elk Ranch to name a few. She also wrote a column “Food for Thought” published in the Long Prairie Leader. After proudly homeschooling her son Devin, Linda was ready for a new challenge so she went to school to become a licensed massage therapist. This led her to start her own business, Blackstone Therapeutic Massage. Her professional skills were appreciated by her clients.

Linda was always ready to help others with her gifts and talents. She volunteered by providing therapy to veterans at Eagles Healing Nest in Sauk Center. Over several years, she shared her home and touched the lives of foreign exchange students. Tending to her many flowers and plants gave her joy.

More than anything though, she loved her family, her grandchildren, John and Sophie had a very special place in her heart.

Linda is survived by her husband, Jerry; son, Devin (Phoebe); parents Richard and Deanna Lackmann; sister Lorie (Mark) Engstrom; granddaughter Sophie Hines and grandson, John Hines all of Long Prairie.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Walt and Lavinia Lackmann and Betty Stephens.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

Accident: June 12, 2020: At approximately 5:55 p.m. received a report of a two-vehicle accident with possible injuries at the intersection of Highway 27 and Dove Road, approximately seven miles west of Little Falls, MN in Culdrum Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 62-year-old Lisa Lano of Little Falls, MN was traveling east on Highway 27 and 21-year-old Jesse Bartkowicz of Swanville, MN was traveling west on Highway 27. The vehicle driven by Bartkowicz attempted to make a left turn onto Dove Road and was struck by Lano’s vehicle. Lano was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released.

No other injuries were reported.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Swanville First Response Team and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

ATV Accident: June 14, 2020: At approximately 1:07 a.m. received a report of an ATV accident on Barrel Road, approximately one mile south of Upsala, MN. According to the Sheriff’s Office, 63-year-old Todd Walker of Burtrum, MN was traveling north along Barrel Road in a Polaris Razor ATV. Walker lost control of the ATV, hit a power pole and was thrown from the machine. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is still under investigation.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Minnesota State Patrol, Upsala Fire Department, Upsala First Response Team and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

Deadline for Next Thursday’s Paper is Monday, June 22.

Edwin J. Hartung

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Edwin J. Hartung, age 91 of Opole, was held Wednesday, June 17 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Edwin passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, June 11.

Edwin was born on September 8, 1928 in Arban, MN, the son of Sebastian and Frances (Young) Hartung. He married Adeline Court on April 15, 1950 in St. Joseph. He was a life-long farmer, and he also worked for the St. Cloud VA for 33 years before his retirement. Edwin always enjoyed his time spent fishing, playing cards with friends and family, as well as making sure his vegetable gardens were growing strong.

Edwin will always be remembered by his children, Elaine (Marvin) Kremers of Avon, Jeanette (David Hoppert) of Avon, Carole (Victor) Michalek of St. Stephen, David (Linda) Hartung of Opole, Jerome Hartung of Freeport, Sharon (Arthur) Salzer of Freeport, Dennis (Ann) Hartung of Avon, Robert (Judy) Hartung of Freeport, Barbara (Rodney) Kaeter of Rice, Michael (Nancy) Hartung of Opole; 42 grandchildren and 62 great-grandchildren. Upsala City June 1, 2020 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:08 P.M via Zoom video conference calling due to the coronavirus. Mayor Johnson lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

On roll call members in attendance: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Council Members Dennis Westrich, and Brian Lange.

People attending: Mitch Lange, First Response Team Vice President Garrett Doucette, MC Record reporter Sheila McCoy, Engineer Clif Allen, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Lange moved to approve minutes from May 4, 2020 City Council Meeting, 2nd by Westrich. With a roll call vote, motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Lange moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Westrich. With a roll call vote, motion carried unanimously.

Fire Department Report: Lange stated the department has not heard from FEMA yet, however they are planning to hear from them later this summer.

The Ride For Heros is still planned so far for June 13, but is tentative due to the pandemic.

First Response Team: Doucette stated that the Rescue Team had two calls both in the City of Upsala; one motor vehicle accident. They met via Zoom in May and they will meet via Zoom in June as well.

A grant of $500 from the County was received. They purchased four oxygen bags and a large tripod light along with some tools for the rig.

They are reaching out to the departments in the area to offer the old washing machine since they don’t need it anymore.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels. He will be doing their third discharge from the sewer pond in June.

Tschida explained that the rock around the ponds needs filling in. There are several feet of rock that has been eroded away from wind and waves. He would like to fill in the rock in two phases: doing half at a time.

Lange moved to have Mike find the appropriate size rock for the ponds for a cost under $8,000.00, 2nd by Westrich. With a roll call vote, motion carried unanimously.

Banners for the Upsala Area High School Seniors were put up as well.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the June Calendar.

Planning Commission: The commissioners did not meet in May. Recreation Board: No meeting was held.

7:31 p.m. Public Hearing – Conditional Use Permit for Sheep Mayor Johnson recessed the regular city council meeting and opened the public hearing at 7:31 p.m.; a hearing on the request for a Conditional Use Permit for Mitch Lange at 121 Basswood Ave. to have up to four sheep.

Mitch Lange said he wants to be very aware of his neighbors and would work with them if there would be an issue.

Lange moved to close the public hearing, 2nd by Westrich. With a roll call vote, motion carried

unanimously.

Mayor Johnson called the regular City Council meeting back to order at 7:34 p.m.

Johnson moved to approve the Conditional Use Permit for Mitch Lange to have up to four sheep provided the permit be reviewed annually to allow neighborhood objections at the planning and zoning annual review, 2nd by Westrich. With a roll call vote, Lange: abstain, and Wetrich and Johnson voting aye.

7:37 p.m. Public Hearing – Ordinance #61- Animals Mayor Johnson recessed the regular city council meeting and opened the public hearing at 7:37 p.m.

Lange moved to adopt Ordinance 62 regulating use of sump pumps and discharge of storm water, ground water and surface water into the city’s sanitary sewer system, but amend the ordinance with the removal of “well water” from Section 1(A), 2nd by Westrich.

With a roll call vote, motion carried unanimously.

Unfinished Business: Letter to PFA – Intended Use Plan The last step in the process of requesting funding for the City’s water infrastructure is to send a letter to the Public Facilities Authority which needs to be sent in by June 5.

Engineer Clif Allen recommended we move forward to be put on the Intended Use Plan.

Westrich moved to approve the letter to be sent to the Public Facilities Authority to be placed on the Intended Use Plan, 2nd by Lange. With a roll call vote, motion carried unanimously.

New Business: New Playset in the Park: Doucette explained that the First Response Team would like to help with the installation of the playset. The First Response Team said they are flexible with the timing of the install.

Liquor License Fees: The Council is very aware of the impact that the COVID19 pandemic has had on small businesses in our community including the bars.

Traditionally the fee for a liquor license is $1500.00 for On/Off Sale, $75.00 and for Sunday Sales. The start of the liquor licenses begins March 31.

Lange moved to pro-rate the liquor license fees for On/Off Sales to when the establishments open due to the pandemic, 2nd by Westrich. With a roll call vote, motion carried unanimously.

Expanding Outdoor Services for Bars and Restaurants: The COVID19 pandemic has also affected the services of liquor and food to the public. The Council is in agreement with Governor Walz allowing bars and restaurants to start serving outdoors.

Lange moved to approve the temporary ordinance 6-1-2020-1 allowing expanded outdoor seating, 2nd by Westrich. With a roll call vote, motion carried unanimously.

Selling City Land: Mayor Johnson reminded the Council that the bid opening for the sale of the property along Hwy 238 will be Tuesday, June 9 at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall.

Opening City Hall: City staff opened City Hall doors to the general public as of this morning, June 1, please use the front door; the back door will be locked.

Acknowledgements: The City Council would like to acknowledge the work and attention the Upsala Area School District offered to make the end of the school year a success; this extends not only to the teachers, but to the cooks, janitorial staff, bus drivers, paraprofessionals, office staff, and students as well.

Upsala Legion Post 350 hosted a beautiful Memorial Service last Monday. Thank you to all who served our country to keep us safe.

Michelle Stevens, Clerk/Treasurer Swanville City May 5, 2020 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, May 5, 2020. The meeting was called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej and Jim Molitor. Also present: Scott Taylor and Tony Gebhard and via conference call: City Engineer Clif Allen, and reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes from the April 7, 2020 Swanville City Council meeting were reviewed. After discussion, a motion was made by Jim Molitor to approve the minutes. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Tony Maciej to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Sytek representatives, Tony Gebhard and Scott Taylor, were present to report to council that the current Sytek lines will be replaced with broadband fiber optic lines (not bored). The project is expected to start sometime in September and take about a month with weather permitting. Sytek representatives will be contacting residents to see if they are interested in a land line and/or internet. There will be free installation at this time.

Clif Allen, City Engineer, reported that General Construction Services will be on site doing the repair work on the city water tower about the middle of May. The cost

of the repair work and overflow pipe should be under $24,000.00.

Allen had a preliminary report on North Berkey Avenue 1st Addition with costs. After discussion by council it was decided to have Jason Murray with David Drowns’ finance office offer guidance on financing for the project and a preliminary bond schedule for the total project.

Mayor Lange presented to council an application from CenturyLink for permission to place, construct and maintain a telephone utility along the alley between DeGraff Ave and Berkey Ave ending at Hwy 28 including 3rd Street and 1st Street. Tony Maciej made a motion to sign the permit for CenturyLink.

Deb Wood seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

A land use application was received from John Hoogenhous to build a 12’x 24’ wood shed 10’ tall on his property. P & Z has approved the building. Jim Molitor made a motion to give Hoogenhous permission to build the wood shed with the dimensions only as stated.

All members voted in favor, motion carried. Brian Schneider also applied for a land use permit to build a wooded fence from his house to his garage to the north and south of his property 40” high. Mayor Lange presented to council a draft of an ordinance adopting section 3.2G stating: all residential districts (medium, low and high) are required to build a principal structure before an accessory structure can be built and so on. A Public Hearing will be set for June 2, 2020 at 6:30 p.m.

A Public Hearing is set for June 2, 2020 at 6:45 p.m. to hear public input on the City of Swanville Well Head Protection Plan. The regular monthly council meeting will start after the Public Hearings.

Reminder City wide clean-up day is scheduled for Saturday, May 16 from 9:00 am -11:00 am.

Council member Tony Maciej reported that signs will be placed in the Feed Mill by the scale about putting covers on trailers.

Grey Eagle Township June 1, 2020 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe. Chris Pelzer was also present. Erv Herdering joined later.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Mary Ann asked to have Chris Pelzer on the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda with that addition Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the May 4, 2020 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes. Ray made the second. Motion carried Chris Pelzer from Todd GIS Department was present to talk about the cost savings to the Township when changing from vertical 911 signs to have them run horizontally. She stated that most of the 911 signs around the state are horizontal. She explained to the Board the different ways this could be done. A few signs at a time or on a rotation over several years. Grey Eagle Township now has approx.

643 911 signs. Cost to replace the signs would be about half of what they cost now. After some discussion, Ron made the motion to start replacing signs on a maintenance schedule and perhaps do more on a

yearly schedule later. Mike made a second to the motion. All in favor, motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for May. Claims list included claims 34463455-for a total of $25,176.87.

A large part of this was for dust control. Mike made the motion to approve the claims as listed. Ray made the second, Motion carried.

Mail included an Upsala school flyer and advertising for a road groomer.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray presented several items for the board - trees in the road ditch – Ray will cut up. Spraying – should the Township spray weeds or brush?

Ray will contact someone to get on the list. Culvert on 321st – water is way down. Culvert on Chipmunk Rd. - Needs to be cleaned out. Erv will take care of this. 116th – water is way down. Crack filling- Ray brought a bid for $7,748 to do 295th Ave. Ray made the motion to accept that bid, Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Ray felt Alan R. should be paid $100.00 for clearing up the brush on 130th. Mike made the motion to pay him, Ron made the second.

All in favor. Motion carried. Shouldering has started on Arden and on 335th, Ray suggested Brakken should be shouldered as far as the repairs were done. Ron signed the mileage certification for the county. And stated he had two calls, one about some Township property and another about a tree on the road, which he cleared.

Additional agenda item: Election equipment update – Todd County is now planning Phase Three and planning the replacement of the HAVA equipment. Cost to the Township would be approx. $3,620.00. Mike made the motion to approve ordering one device for the Township. Ray made the second, all in favor. Motion carried.

The emergency Election plan is to use the GE City Hall in case of an emergency. Commercial Insurance Plan was reviewed and left as it was.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 9:25 p.m.

Todd County Sheriff’s Office

June 6, 2020: A 6x10 utility trailer was reported stolen from the bowling alley lot in Long Prairie. The theft happened sometime in the last two weeks.

June 9, 2020: At 06:36 hours received a report of a two vehicle crash at the intersection of US Highway 71 and County Road 6 in Little Sauk with possible injuries. Holly Jo Kramer age 42 of Long Prairie was traveling southbound on US Highway 71 in her 2011 Ford Edge attempting to turn onto County Road 6 when Aneuri Caraballo Mejia, age 23 of Long Prairie was traveling southbound in his 2006 Lincoln Navigator had struck the rear of her vehicle as she was attempting to turn onto County 6. Kramer was transported

by Ambulance to the Long Prairie Hospital for possible injuries sustained in the crash.

All parties were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Todd County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Long Prairie Ambulance and Long Prairie Fire Department.

June 15, 2020: During the week of June 7th through June 13th, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to 279 calls for service. The following were the types of calls: 125 traffic stops, 7 traffic complaints, 10 civil process, 12 suspicious activity type Upsala, MN

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2004 Chevy two-wheel drive truck that gets about 14 miles per gallon average and I would like to get more mileage out of it. I have seen kits that advertise more mpg such as hydrogen additive kits and exhaust kits and air intake kits all claiming more mpg. If I put all of these on it looks like I could get over ten mpg more out of the truck. Some of my friends say this is not possible and I would be lucky to get a couple mpg more out of it. What are your thoughts?

-John in Jupiter, Florida As fuel prices go up people start to look at fuel economy. Let’s face it. If fuel were fifty cents all the time a lot of folks would not care what their vehicle got for fuel mileage. Unfortunately, there are people out there who use the high prices to their advantage to try and sell products to gain mileage. If these products all worked two things would happen. Many people would buy them, but the manufacturers would already have them installed as part of their new vehicles in order to meet the ever-increasing fuel economy standards. Hydrogen kits typically do not add miles per gallon, at least not any we have ever seen tested. Air intakes are not a big increaser either. Sometimes a tuner will help but only small gains are seen. The best miles per gallon increaser is a newer model vehicle.

Dear Motor Medics, I am looking for a newer car and at the rate I am saving I should be ready to buy one in about six months. Here is my dilemma. I currently have a 2008 Ford Taurus and recently the engine started using coolant at the rate of about 1 quart a week. I took it to my local mechanic who told me the leak was coming from the front timing cover and to repair it would cost over 700 dollars. That would set me back several months on my savings and I don’t know how long the rest of the car will last so I might just be throwing away my money. Do you have any ideas of something I can do to get by for a short time?

The timing cover has a small gasket and it has been known to fail on these cars and sometimes its just bad luck but other times it’s caused by head gasket failure. A possibility to get you by for a short time would be a product called KSeal added to the coolant.

It’s non-clogging and may stop the leak long enough for you to save for the replacement car.

Don’t Neglect This One Conversation With Your Kids (A Father’s Day Huddle)

By Chris Hogan In honor of Father’s Day, I want to pause, huddle up the dads out there, and give us men a quick pep talk.

We have a massive opportunity to impact our children’s lives, for better or worse. I have three incredible boys, and I want to do everything in my power to raise them well. One of our main jobs as fathers is to teach. We help our children learn to walk, ride a bike, and eventually, drive a car. But there’s one lesson too many dads overlook: how to manage money. And just like handling a car, if you don’t learn to handle money well, you can do some serious damage.

But conversations about money can be tough. You might feel unequipped, and you might feel guilty for mistakes you’ve made in your own life. It’s time to set that negativity aside, and focus on what we can do moving forward. Here are five tips to get the ball rolling: Dialogue—don’t monologue It’s easy to lecture, throw a list of rules at your kids, and hope for the best. But these conversations are a two-way street. Listen well, ask questions, and be patient as you explain the “why” behind the what. You may need to revisit these concepts many times!

Have age-appropriate conversations The Hogan boys learned simple money concepts early on, like how to divide their money into three categories—save, spend, and give. But as they get older, we’ve started to unpack concepts like investing and how to cash flow college.

Share real stories I’ve learned to be open about my mistakes with money. It’s an opportunity for my boys to make real-life connections, and avoid the same problems that I created for myself.

Widen the circle of influence If you feel overwhelmed, get some help! Have your children read books like The Total Money Makeover. Bring them to your next meeting with your investment professional, or your tax advisor. You don’t have to share the details of your portfolio, but introducing them to financial experts at such a young age will boost their confidence and give them a head start.

Celebrate their progress We should intentionally look for ways to celebrate our kids and tell them how proud we are. I love patting my boys on the back when I see them place the “give” envelope in the basket at church. And my middle son, who’s 14, has almost $2,000 saved for a car! Life is short and these moments will be gone before you know it, so celebrate everything you can.
